Water Taxis in Victoria: Your Guide to a Unique City Experience

Don't get lost — stay safe.

728x90-Palli-Banner-Ad

Victoria Water Taxi Photos:

Victoria is a city where the ocean isn’t just a view but a pathway to adventure! If you’re seeking a blend of urban charm and maritime flair, hopping on a water taxi is a must-do. Whether you’re a local rediscovering your city or a visitor soaking in the harbour vibes, water taxis offer a unique perspective of Victoria. Ready to dive in? Let’s explore what makes these nautical jaunts so special.

— Fisherman’s Wharf is part of our self-guided “ One Day Victoria Walking Tour ” —

Two colorful water taxis with checkered detailing docked at Victoria's waterfront near the Empress Hotel, with Canadian flags fluttering in the breeze and passengers milling about the ticket center on a sunny day

What Is A Water Taxi?

Water Taxis in Victoria are more than just a means of transport; they’re part of the city’s culture. These small, agile boats zip across the harbour, offering a quick, scenic, and fun way to travel. The bright yellow ‘pickle boats’ have a max capacity of 12 and are operated by friendly and knowledgeable locals, offering 12 designated ferry stops in the inner and upper harbours.

Why Choose Water Taxis?

  • Scenic Views : Witness Victoria’s skyline from the water, including the iconic Parliament Buildings and the Empress Hotel.
  • Convenience : Water taxis connect key points along the harbour, making them a practical choice for getting around.
  • Explore: Discover new locations along the lower and upper harbour you might not otherwise experience.
  • Convenience: No car? Visit places around Victoria that might be harder to reach without a car.

How Does It Work?

In Victoria Harbour, apart from the Empress Hotel and Fisherman’s Warf, the majority of locations do not have personnel present on the docks.

The information found on the dock will direct you to place a call to book a water taxi while you stand on the dock, waiting to be picked up.

A QR code and phone number are displayed to contact the dispatcher at all stops. Call to book 250-514-9794 and there’s a Live Map with current taxi locations.

Two QR codes for scanning are on the left, with a large red octagon on the right encouraging to scan for a water taxi or call the provided phone number. The map has a legend indicating taxi service, gorge tour, and harbour tour routes.

Key Routes And Destinations

Water taxis in Victoria have several pick-up and drop-off points, including:

water taxi tour vancouver

  • Empress Dock : The heart of Victoria, where historic architecture meets modern city life.
  • Old Town : Middle of downtown Victoria, shops, restaurants and Bastion Square.
  • Chinatown : Brick buildings, narrow alleys and home to Canada’s oldest Chinatown,
  • Point Ellice House : The Point Ellice House and landscaped gardens provide a rare opportunity to see one of North America’s most extensive collections of late Victorian and early Edwardian objects.
  • Selkirk Landing : Go for lunch at Glow or walk across the Selkirk trestle bridge to the historic neighbourhood of Victoria West. Last pick-up time will change seasonally.

The Water Taxi Ballet

Taking inspiration from the world-famous RCMP Musical Ride, the water taxi balley is a uniquely captivating event where skilled captains choreograph their boats in a synchronized dance on the water. This charming display of maritime grace typically happens during the busy summer weekends, transforming Victoria’s harbour into a lively, aquatic stage.

The best vantage point for this spectacle is along the Steamship terminal, where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the performance. The beauty of this event is that it’s completely free to watch, offering a memorable experience without any cost.

The ballet takes place between May and September on either Saturdays or Sundays at 10:45 am during summer, adding a magical touch to Victoria’s already enchanting summer ambiance. It’s an unmissable, whimsical attraction that uniquely captures the spirit of Victoria’s waterfront.

Up-to-date water ballet schedule

After the performance, join us at the Causeway Marina near the Empress Dock to visit with the Ballet Captains!

Combining with Other Activities

Water taxis can be part of a larger adventure:

  • Food and Drink : Hop off at a waterside restaurant for fresh, local cuisine.
  • Historical Exploration : Combine your ride with a visit to the Royal BC Museum , Old Town, Chinatown , The Point Ellice House and Victoria West .

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria's waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for almost 30 years. Beat the traffic and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

We enjoyed our tour of the inner harbour and gorge. Ben was very knowledgeable and kind. He was great with my two kids and took the time to be very thorough about the areas we were passing by. Overall it was a great experience.

What a great view of Victoria from the water! I'm new to Victoria so am trying to experience life as a tourist. My Guide Fenn was so pleasant and very knowledgable. I took the Combo Tour of the Gorge and Vic West. It was well worth the 45 minute ride. I would definitely recommend it to visitors.

If you come to Victoria anytime between May and October do yourself a solid and take the Harbour Ferry (yes harbour has a "U" in it when visiting Canada) ...it will take you around one of the world's cleanest and most beloved cities. Get on the water and Putt Putt Toot Toot!

As local residents we definitely recommend the Victoria Harbour Ferry - especially for visitors from the prairies. It gives visitors an interesting water experience while and features a spectacular view of the Victoria Harbour.

My family and I really enjoyed our Inner Harbour Ferry Tour. It was our first experience and I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed it! We learned so much about Victoria and the views were stunning! It is a working harbour so there is so much to experience. A must do!

Our happy little boats have been connecting locals and visitors to Victoria’s waterfront neighbourhoods, parks and communities for over 30 years. Connect to our network of trails, pathways and join us on the water for incredible views along the way.

Aquabus: A Water Taxi Ride With Million Dollar Views In Vancouver

Vancouver Aquabus

While visiting Vancouver, my friend Nick and I went for lunch at Granville Island. After lunch, he headed back to his office and I stayed behind. The weather was ideal so stayed to enjoy Granville Island. Grabbing a coffee, I decided to sit on the benches and watch the view. After hanging out, I needed to get back to my friend’s place in Mount Pleasant. Rather than take the bus or hail a taxi, I rode the Aquabus.

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS

  • Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo . I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
  • Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
  • Get up to $40 off your first Air Bnb stay by using this code !
  • Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads . For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.

Can’t beat this, can you?

The Aquabus is a passenger ferry that services False Creek. There are several docks stops in the downtown area as far west as Hornby near the Burrard Street Bridge, Yaletown, and on the other side at Olympic Village and Granville Island.

At Granville Island, I hopped on the Aquabus and took it over to the Olympic Village (where I was staying). It was so nice to not have to ride the city bus and have amazing views of the city in the process. The ride was so quick too. No traffic congestion on the water! The girl manning my Aquabus said that they run every 7 minutes. My local friend who cycles a lot said he occasionally takes the Aquabus because some of them can hold bikes.

Here are some photos from my Aquabus ride:

Water Taxi Transport

Friendly Boat Captain

36-foot landing craft brings you to your kayak destination

gallery image

Water Taxi into remote beaches in the Broughton Archipelago with your kayaks and gear

An ideal trip is all about safety and fun, but it’s important to bear in mind that our dynamic ocean waters are no joke. Let us take you help across the choppy waters of the Johnstone Strait with our 36-foot landing craft to start or end your kayak journey.

AWE provides water-taxi services to a variety of destinations in the Broughton Archipelago. Our 36 foot landing craft is stable, comfortable, and can load up to 10-12 kayaks on board with all your gear. This vessel was made specifically for kayak transport! Our captain’s are well trained with beach landing and this aluminum landing craft can land at almost any beach in the area.

Our taxi can run kayak transport all the way to Echo Bay and further, or it can transport you through the high current waters of Blackney Pass and Weynton Pass to enjoy safe passage in Blackfish Sound. We run water-taxi services to all kayaking groups, and run the only taxi-service based out of Telegraph Cove.

Our location is located inside Telegraph Cove, in a secluded cove called Bauza Cove. You can drive to our launching site via driving through Telegraph Cove, where our water taxi will pick you up on our private rocky beach. Secure parking is available at $10 per vehicle, per day.

We offer a variety of drop-off and pickup locations in the Broughton Archipelago. These sites are set by our boat captains, as they the right beaches for camping, and safe in most weather conditions.

Our months of operations for the water-taxi transport service starts in May and go until the last week of September. Transport rates are set for the desired location of your drop-off or pick-up, and is based on the time of travel (Telegraph Cove-Your location- Telegraph Cove).

Our Transport Vessel "Salish Sea Explorer"

watertaxi

Our 36 foot Landing Craft is explicitly constructed to load and unload kayaks, gear and guests. We can access a lot of different beaches and rocky-outcrops with this landing craft. We maintain this vessel over the winter and are constantly upgrading it for North Island Weather conditions. The boat has a radar, so we can navigate through the fog. Our boat has an outdoor cabin in the aft of the boat. It provides some shelter from the rain and wind, but sometimes in rainy weather, our guests might get a little wet. To mitigate this, we have rain ponchos for each guest. There is additional deck space in the front of the boat for your gear. We ask that most of your gear is in dry bags, and the front deck of the boat does get wet on bigger weather days.

The Salish Sea Explorer is equipped with VHF radio, radar, and standard safety equipment. Our captains are certified in small vessel safety and operations. The vessel is equipped with a standard package of technology (GPS) to ensure your safety while onboard. We operate two VHF radios and two GPS systems for reliability and durability. The vessel is coast guard certified and equipped with standard safety equipment. Safety gear is inspected and replaced as required.

Warm clothes and rain jackets should be worn during your kayak transport. This is due to the cabin being outside, you will experience on wind on your skin during the transport.

All Aboard the Granville Island Water Taxi!

By voula martin | january 1, 2021.

vancouver water taxi ride

Over spring break my in laws were in town and we were looking for something special to do with the kids. While having dinner on Granville Island my kids, once again, asked to go out on the water taxis, something they beg for Every. Single. Time. Sadly I had to say no, because we just didn’t have time but made a promise to come back in a few days.

So on a sunny Tuesday afternoon we again ventured to the island, which is consistently a favourite for all the Family Fun Vancouver kids as witnessed here , here and here !

Since I had been saying no for so long, I said yes with a vengeance and we took the full meal deal; the 40 minute tour of False Creek. To help offset the cost, we used a coupon from the Vancouver City Passport which is a wonderful way to save some money on local attractions! They also have a free admission for the Vancouver Lookout , 2 for 1 admission to attractions such as the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden , discounts on meals, and lots of other great ways to save while enjoying everything Vancouver has to offer. Their new edition comes out soon, so definitely check it out!

Vancouver Attraction Passport

The kids were vibrating with excitement as we waited on the dock for our little boat to pull in. They were thrilled to bits to get a seat right at the bow where they had the best view. And for about 25 minutes they were very excited about being on the water. But then, well, they started getting hungry and I hadn’t packed snacks. They loved heading out towards the bay and seeing the Space Centre from a different perspective, were excited to travel under the bridges, and awed how large BC Place is from our creek side vantage point but by the time we started chugging back to Granville Island, they were ready to get off the boat. A quick gelato later and all was tickety boo again.

So lessons learned? Do the 25 minute tour (which is perfect for little ones) and never forget to pack snacks and drinks! Regardless we all had fun on the water and enjoyed seeing beautiful Vancouver from another perspective. Next time you are at Granville Island, try something a little different and give the water taxis a whirl!
