Find out where you should go on holiday next at The Luxury Travel Fair 2022

The Luxury Travel Fair returns to the Olympia National Gallery Level for 2023. In previous years guests kayaked down one of South America's most epic rivers, took to the skies in a helicopter and descended a dangerous volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At least, they did vicariously, through the stories of adventurers including Pip Stewart, Tommy Clarke and Aldo Kane – three of the experts who assembled to share their intrepid experiences and answer questions from the floor.

Hear their accounts, ask them your questions and find a deep well of information at your fingertips.

Alongside the big names, the Luxury Travel Fair offers the inside track on the smartest new hotels , exclusive destinations and top tour operators. Wild new rides await at european volksfests.

Local European festivals can offer surprisingly thrilling rides and entertainment experiences.

Local European festivals can offer surprisingly thrilling rides and entertainment experiences. (iStock)

For some it’s the food. For others, it’s the beer. For almost everyone, it’s the atmosphere— there are countless reasons to love a volksfest or fun fair. Another important element for the young and young at heart is the midway rides, often at a caliber high enough to rival the stationary attractions found in many amusement parks. Here are some of the latest, most innovative or hair-raising rides just waiting to spin, drop or otherwise thrill you.

Gäubodenvolksfest

Straubing, Germany

Dates: through Aug. 19

SkyFall: Billed as the highest free-fall tower in the world, those brave souls with no fear of heights have ample time to appreciate a breathtaking view of the ant-sized festival down below before plunging 240 feet back to earth. This ride has been a hit with the fest-going public since 2013 and is still going strong. The SkyFall will also make an appearance at Munich’s Oktoberfest.

Nürnberg Herbstvolksfest

Nuremberg, Germany

Dates: Aug. 23-Sept. 8

Wilde Maus XXL: This mobile roller coaster was built to be as fun as it is scary. Before even boarding, passengers pass through a range of fun distractions, from a hanging bridge to rotating discs. Once on board, riders reach a height of 100 feet and experience three substantial drops, made all the more fun on a hot day, when they’re doused with water jets.

Schouberfouer

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Dates: Aug. 23-Sept. 11

Mr. Gravity: Mr. Gravity is an elevated ride consisting of 10 two-seated gondolas arranged in a circle. The gondolas sit atop a disc that rotates in both directions, and the disc itself is mounted on the end of another rotating arm.

Wormser Backfischfest

Worms, Germany

Dates: Aug. 28-Sept. 1

Anubis the Egyptian Giant: This Egyptian-themed propeller ride belongs to a class of attractions known as a booster. Dozens of such units, made up of a long arm with 360-degree spinning cars attached to both ends, operate throughout the world. The Anubis stands at 180 feet tall and accelerates to a speed of 75 miles per hour in just three seconds. Up to 16 passengers can ride simultaneously, legs dangling in the wind, on this Egyptian-themed contraption.

Rosenheimer Herbstfest

Rosenheim, Germany

Dates: Aug. 31-Sept. 15

Hangover: Described as the world´s highest mobile gyro-drop tower, up to 24 passengers seated in a circular formation can enjoy 360-degree views as the gondola rotates on its journey toward the heavens. On the way back down, riders plummet from a height of 280 feet and achieve speeds of up to 56 mph. More than 250,000 LED lights make the Hangover a real standout against the night sky.

Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt

Bad Dürkheim, Germany

Dates: Sept. 6-10 and Sept. 13-16

Escape Flight of Fear: This high-riding carousel was built in 2022. It can accommodate up to 30 passengers, seated in pairs. Riders are strapped in with a lap bar, as opposed to a shoulder bar, and fly randomly along a 25-foot-high flight path, with rapid changes of direction. Despite its speed, the ride is touted as family-friendly and easy on the tummy.

Oktoberfest

Munich, Germany

Dates: Sept. 21-Oct. 6

Olympia Looping: Also referred to as the Five Looper, the world’s largest transportable roller coaster is a natural fit to the world’s biggest volksfest. As the name suggests, riders are whisked head over heels a remarkable five times, reaching speeds of up to 62 mph along the ride’s three-quarter mile long track. The Olympia Looping’s owners suggest that riding in the front carriage as rain streams down is an experience unto itself.

Crazy Island: Not a ride at all but rather a funhouse, the largest such structure in Germany stretches over five floors and is strewn with 50 obstacles, including climbable torches, a hanging bridge and a waterfall. Caribbean-themed décor adds a touch of the exotic to the walkthrough.

Cannstatter Volksfest

Stuttgart, Germany

Dates: Sept. 27-Oct. 13

The King: This giant swing consists of four gondolas attached to a long arm that rotates 360 degrees. The rings that attach the gondolas to the arm swivel as well, and there’s plenty of motion going on as the ride achieves speeds of up to 75 miles per hour.

Gladiator: This giant propeller ride has a long arm that rotates along a horizontal axle at a speed of up to 50 mph. At the end of both arms are what resemble two-pronged forks holding two gondolas that are also capable of independent movement.

Kensington Olympia Redevelopment

Olympia's Grand Plans

In order to make your event experience even better, Olympia are undergoing some exciting new redevelopment works. The end result will be two new hotels, a theatre, live music venue, restaurants, bars, co-working spaces and beautiful open spaces for everyone to enjoy, becoming a cultural destination by 2025.

Olympia has started the redevelopment already so this year your arrival experience may be a little different to usual with hoarding built up around the venue. Please bear with them and be assured that all entrances are fully operational and once inside you will experience the same Destinations experience you are used to.

A few of the changes you will notice include:

  • The entrance to the Grand Hall remains the same.
  • The National Hall's entrance at the end of Olympia Way has undergone the most significant changes. The old entrance on Hammersmith Road is no longer operational. In place of Pizza Express, a new full-service entrance is now open on Olympia Way.

If you’d like to explore what the venue will have to offer once it’s all finished you can download a pdf  here .

Boxer Imane Khelif wins gold medal: Algerian is Olympic champion after controversy

Portrait of Josh Peter

PARIS – Algerian boxer Imane Khelif , targeted in a “gender eligibility’’ controversy at these Games, etched her name into Olympic history Friday night.

She’s now a gold medalist.

Khelif, 25, beat China’s Yang Liu in the women’s welterweight finals at Roland-Garros Stadium, capping a turbulent experience at the Olympics.

"I’m very happy. For eight years, this has been my dream and I’m now the Olympic champion and gold medallist," Khelif said. "I’ve worked for eight years, no sleep, eight years tired. Now I’m Olympic champion.

"I want to thank all the people who have come to support me. All the people from Algeria and all the people at my base. I want to thank all the team, my coach. Thank you so much."

2024 Paris Olympics: Follow USA TODAY’s coverage of the biggest names and stories of the Games.

Thousands of Algerian fans remained to cheer as Khelif received her gold medal. After it was draped around her neck, she shook her fists in the air as the crowd rose for the national anthem. After a spirited rendition, Khelif put the gold medal between her teeth as she and the other medalists posed for pictures. She was in no hurry to leave the ring or end the celebration. But eventually she exits, the last to vacate what has been her sanctuary during these Olympics. The blessed boxing ring.

Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting have been subjected to abuse on social media and inaccurate media speculation about their sexes even though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said they both have met all criteria and that there’s no question they are women.

The Russian-backed International Boxing Association brought the issue to the surface last week. The IBA, which is not recognized by the IOC and has no role in Olympic boxing, stripped Lin (gold) and Khelif (bronze) of their 2023 World Championship medals after the organization claimed they failed gender eligibility tests. The IOC and others have raised concerns about the veracity of those tests.

While the issue raged, the two boxers continued to excel in the ring.

Khelif won all four of her bouts at the Olympics.

Lin, 28, fights for gold Saturday against Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in women’s featherweight (126 pounds) division. Lin has won all three of her bouts on points by unanimious decision.

Khelif, 25, won her opening bout when Italy’s Angela Carini quit 46 seconds into the match in the round of 16. She won on points by unanimous decision in the quarterfinals against Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori and in the semifinals against Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng.

Round 3: Khelif wins a gold medal

Khelif fighting off her back foot as Liu stalks. Is this an attempt to protect her lead on the scorecards? Liu still stalking but not unloading punches. Khelif keeping her at bay with the jab and proving elusive. The chants of “Imane’’ fill the arena again. Khelif dancing as the final bell rings and the crowd roars.

Round 2: Khelif wins first two rounds

Bell rings and you know what’s next: the chants of “Imane!’’ Liu lands a hard left, showing aggression now. But Khelif lands a solid shot and exchanges ensue. Again, all five judges award the round to Khelif.

Round 1: Khelif takes it

The chants start seconds after the bell rings. “Imane, Imane, Imane!” Boxers tangle at the center of the ring, but a sluggish start here. Khelif lands a jab, and the Algerians are singing as Khelif scores again with the jab. Then lands a nice combination with Liu on the ropes! Decibel levels climbing and all five judges award the round to Khelif.

Imane Khelif makes entrance

Massive applause as Khelif emerges wearing red. No question who the crowd favorite will be in the 15,000-seat capacity boxing venue at Roland-Garros Stadium. Some boos rain down as her opponent enters.

At last, the boxing resumes

With two medal ceremonies complete, it’s back to boxing. First up: the men’s heavyweight final. Then, Imane Khelif fighting for gold.

How many rounds are Olympic bouts?

Bouts are scheduled for three rounds and are scored by five judges. Using a 10-point system, each judge awards 10 points to the boxer they deem won the round and at least nine points to the boxer they deem lost the round.

Barring a stoppage, the winner of the bout will be determined by points based on the judges' scorecards. A boxer earns one point for each judge who deems the boxer has won at least two of the three rounds.

IOC to make a call on boxing's future next year

A decision on boxing's inclusion at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has to be made in 2025, IOC president Thomas Bach said on Friday.

The boxing competition at the Paris Olympics is being run by the IOC after it stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition last year over its failure to implement reforms on governance and finance.

The IOC has not included the sport on the LA 2028 program yet and has urged national boxing federations to create a new global boxing body or risk missing out on the Olympics in four years' time. − Reuters

Crowd starts to get restless

Still one bout to go before Khelif enters the ring, and Algerians got on their feet and waved flags. But it gets worse for the restless. Before the boxing resumes, they’re holding two medal ceremonies inside the ring.

Imane Khelif draws support again

Algerians began arriving  early in strong numbers for Khelif’s bout, with one woman wearing a T-shirt that reads, “Algerian Feminists Stand With You.”

When is Imane Khelif’s next fight?

10:51 p.m. Paris time (4:51 p.m. ET) Friday, August 9

How to watch Imane Khelif’s next fight

The fight will be broadcast on NBC/ Peacock .

Where will the match be held?

Roland Garros Stadium, home of the French Open
