Singapore has 'done deal so Taylor Swift can't perform in any other countries in southeast Asia'

Thailand's prime minister Srettha Thavisin added that he had long been wondering why Swift had not performed in the country - until the promoter AEG helped him understand more.

Singapore has done a deal to ensure Taylor Swift doesn't perform anywhere else in southeast Asia, Thailand's prime minister has claimed.

Srettha Thavisin said promoter AEG informed him of the agreement that Swift will not do any other The Eras Tour shows in the Association of South East Asian Nations.

Speaking at the iBusiness Forum 2024 in Bangkok, he claimed that he was told the Singapore government offered $2m to $3m (£1.6m to £2.4m) per show in exchange for exclusivity on the island.

Swift has six sold-out shows scheduled in Singapore at the 55,000-seat National Stadium in March.

"The Singapore government is astute," Mr Srettha said. The former property tycoon added that he had long been wondering why Swift had not performed in Thailand and AEG helped him understand more.

"If she came to Thailand, it would have been cheaper to organise it here, and I believe she would be able to attract more sponsors and tourists to Thailand. Even though we would have to subsidise at least 500m baht, it would be worth it," he said.

"If I had known this, I would have brought the shows to Thailand," he said in a keynote speech at the forum. "Concerts can generate added value for the economy."

In 2014, Swift had planned a show at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani, but she later cancelled the sold-out concert. No reason was given, but it came after the country's 2014 coup.

Sky News has reached out to the Singapore government, AEG, and Taylor Swift's team for comment.

Why are some Asian countries not happy with Taylor Swift’s exclusive deal with Singapore?

Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour is one of the biggest musical tours of all time. It has attracted a lot of audience and general interest that has made a huge impact in pop-culture. With this immense popularity it was inevitable that many countries would like to have the celebrated singer perform in their countries.

Thailand Prime Minister was quite vocal about his displeasure with the exclusive deal that the All Too Well singer has made with Singapore which makes it difficult for the other countries that are part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which includes Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.

The reason for his displeasure was the agreement made between Taylor Swift and Singapore authorities that makes her unable to perform in any other country of the ASEAN bloc due to an exclusivity clause. This has also caused disappointment amongst a lot of Thai Swifties who were hoping to see their favorite star perform live.

What is Taylor Swift’s agreement with the Singapore Government?

Taylor Swift’s fans all over the world have been excited since the announcement of her Eras Tour expanding to many more countries. This has also caused a competition between the nations who are looking to get the privilege of hosting the global star in their countries’ venues.

One of the countries that have been successful in scoring the exclusive hosting privilege for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is Singapore. As revealed by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, the Singapore government had proposed a financial package ranging from USD 2 Million to USD 3 Million per show which is contingent on her performing exclusively in Singapore out of all the countries of the ASEAN bloc.

This has been termed as a significant agreement between the global pop-icon and Singapore authorities making for a mutually beneficial tour.

Eras Tour in Australia: Tracking Taylor Swift's secret songs in Melbourne and Sydney

MELBOURNE, Australia — Taylor Swift brought her Eras Tour and acoustic set Down Under for her largest stadium show to date.

"I want to play songs more than once if I feel like it," Swift said on night three before playing a guitar mashup of "Come Back...Be Here" from "Red (Taylor's Version)" and "Daylight" from "Lover." She played "Teardrops On My Guitar" from her debut album on the piano.

Triple mashup shocks on night two

On night two, Swift strummed and sang a triple mashup of "Getaway Car" from "Reputation," "August" from "Folklore" and "The Other Side of the Door" from "Fearless (Taylor's Version)."

"I figured you might want to hear this," Swift said on night two before starting the mashup. "When I'm picking these songs, I try to match the moment. You have done something so extraordinary by deciding that 96,000 of you want to come and hang out and dance and sing."

Then, on the piano, she finished with "This Is Me Trying" from "Folklore."

Night one in Melbourne burns red

“Tonight I was gonna do one of my favorite ones,” Swift said on night one inside the Melbourne Cricket Grounds before performing the title track of her fourth album.

The singer performed "Red” from "Red (Taylor's Version)" on the guitar and, for the first time on the tour, "You’re Losing Me" from "Midnights" on the piano.

She also announced a special edition of her upcoming album "The Tortured Poets Department" featuring an extra bonus track.

Before Australia, Swift played in Tokyo for four nights. She has three nights in Melbourne before heading to Sydney for four nights and Singapore for six. Then, the singer will have a two-month break.

The Filipino superfans travelling thousands of miles to see Taylor Swift

Swifties from across the country are spending big so they can travel to see star’s Eras tour in Japan, Singapore and Australia

F or Allan Villa, seeing Taylor Swift live in concert is an unmissable experience, worthy of the backbreaking travel that will be required to take him there. From Masbate Island, where he lives, Villa will travel four hours by boat to the Luzon mainland and then 12 hours by bus to Manila, where he will take a more than four-hour flight to Singapore.

In the process he will probably spend several months’ worth of salary to attend the concert there on 4 March.

But having loved Swift since he saw the music video of Our Song from her 2006 debut album, Villa says the effort will be worth it.

“I will probably cry the whole night,” he says.

Allan Villa, from Masbate Island, Philippines.

He’s just one of many Filipinos hopping into boats and buses, boarding planes, and spending many months’ worth of salaries to see Swift on her record-breaking Eras tour, amid claims that poor infrastructure was among the reasons why the Philippines was missing from the star’s schedule.

Joyce Blaza from Manila hoped to get tickets to the Singapore show, but after missing out she chose to travel to the only other country in Asia included in the tour: Japan.

“I am so happy. I can say that every peso we paid for the concert was worth it,” she says after watching Swift’s concert at the jam packed Tokyo Dome on 9 February.

Fans watch on as Taylor Swift performs onstage during in Tokyo.

Blaza convinced her husband, Lester, to turn the trip into a postponed honeymoon after they got married in December 2022. She agonised for months over whether or not she could get a visa or if her employer would grant her a long vacation.

To Joyce, Swift was the “best friend” who was there during difficult periods in her life. She sang her heart out to songs from 1989 and Reputation, two albums close to her heart.

She says she loved seeing herself among a sea of Swifties singing and dancing along to their idol.

“It was magical! It’s a different feeling. My husband and I are still feeling high from the entire experience,” she says.

For Naomi Esguerra, a doctor from Manila who is a “Swiftie from the very beginning,” one concert was never going to be enough. She secured tickets to a show in Australia on 25 February and Singapore on 7 March.

It’s the “tour of all tours”, she says, adding that it may not happen again.

“I want to experience being so close to Taylor on stage so I got a ticket in the front row [at one show] … I want to experience the full production and effects of the stage so I took a seat in the lower bowl [at the other],” Esguerra says.

She couldn’t travel for previous concerts because she was finishing med school. “Now that I have the time. I’m making up for it,” she says.

Fans pose for a selfie before Taylor Swift’s concert at the Tokyo Dome.

Don’t ask her for her favourite song though. “That’s the most difficult question you can ask a Swifite.”

“She has this way of telling it in her lyrics. Like she stole my diary and wrote a song about it. It’s exactly how I can describe it,” she says.

She will watch the two concerts with her husband, who has come to accept that Taylor is “the longest relationship in my life”.

For Villa, the relationship is the same; he has a Swift song for all the huge moments in his life.

“What’s amazing with Taylor is you can always find a song in her discography to suit all the events in your life. She’s also talking about a lot of things – insecurities, bullies, your family, and even death,” he says.

Soon You’ll Get Better from the Lover album got him through the death of his grandmother in 2021.

“That’s the magic of Taylor’s music.”

Travis Kelce is back in Vegas, baby.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, was pictured in Sin City once again as he played a spot of golf at the Wynn Las Vegas following his team's 2024 Super Bowl win at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11.

The snap — which was shared on Instagram by Jasmin Medar, director of VIP relations and creative marketing at the Wynn Las Vegas — comes amid speculation that he will soon be jetting off to Australia to support girlfriend Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour .

In the Instagram Story photo, Kelce was captured in the middle of a golf session at the luxury resort. He was dressed in a full golfer’s ensemble consisting of a white cap, matching pants and golf shoes, along with a striped gray polo shirt, as he observed a pillar labeled ‘Lake Travis.’

“Lake Travis, Location: 17th Hole,” wrote Medar alongside the image, tagging Kelce and the resort.

Chris Dyson / BACKGRID

Kelce being snapped in Vegas comes as fans believe he is traveling next to Sydney, Australia to meet up with girlfriend Swift, 34. The singer is currently in the city as she prepares to perform four shows as part of her Eras Tour at Sydney’s Accor Stadium from Friday.

Swift was photographed stepping out for dinner in the city's Surry Hills on Tuesday, the same day as her man was pictured in Vegas. The "Anti-Hero" hitmaker joined fellow singer  Sabrina Carpenter , who is supporting her on her tour, for a girls' night out at Pellegrino 2000.

According to Travis’ father, Ed Kelce , the Chiefs star is “keen” to fly to Sydney to support Swift, and Singapore where she is set to perform afterward.

Ed told The Sydney Morning Herald that he spoke to Travis "after the Super Bowl," about him going to Sydney.

"I asked him, are you going to take off for Sydney, and he seemed keen," he shared, adding that his son "wasn't sure because he has commitments."

Swift will perform four shows in Sydney up until Feb. 26. She then will travel to Singapore for six sold-out shows at the National Stadium, beginning March 2.

Speculation over Kelce journeying to Sydney follows Swift flying in to support the Chiefs player many times in recent months at his NFL games and the Super Bowl, in which his team defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22.

Meanwhile, Kelce last supported his girlfriend on her tour in November when he traveled to Argentina as she performed her second Eras Tour show in Buenos Aires. The sportsman sat in the VIP tent at the concert next to Swift's dad Scott.

Taylor Swift On World Tour But No Concerts In India. Here's Why

Indian fans will have to wait a while longer to witness Taylor Swift in action.

Taylor Swift is regarded as one of the world's most popular singer-songwriters and has a massive fan base in India. Yet when she announced the dates for her global Eras Tour, there were 6 concerts planned in Singapore and none in India. The reason: A deal between the Singapore government and the concert promoter.

The revelation was recently made by Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin who revealed that the concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) told him that Taylor Swift could not perform anywhere in Southeast Asia during the tour.

According to Mr Thavisin, AEG informed him that the Singapore government had secured an exclusive deal with Taylor Swift, offering a substantial sum of $2 million to $3 million per show in exchange for the sole right to host the tour in Southeast Asia.

Swift's Eras Tour, currently her most expansive yet, boasts 151 shows across five continents, making it the highest-grossing tour of all time, surpassing an impressive $1 billion in revenue. With six sold-out shows scheduled at Singapore's National Stadium in March, it seems the island state has strategically positioned itself as the sole Southeast Asian stop for the global pop sensation.

Prime Minister Thavisin expressed disappointment on behalf of Thai fans, highlighting that hosting the concert in Thailand would have been more cost-effective and could have attracted additional sponsors and tourists to the country.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

"The Singapore government is astute," Prime Minister Thavisin remarked, acknowledging the strategic move made by Singapore to secure the high-profile tour. He mentioned that AEG helped him understand why Taylor Swift had not previously performed in Thailand, stating that if he had known earlier, efforts would have been made to bring the Eras Tour to the country.

Indian fans will have to wait a while longer to witness the global pop sensation in action and are currently left with no option but to consider making the journey to Singapore to witness Taylor Swift's iconic performances.

Singapore secures exclusive 'Eras Tour' stop with financial support for Taylor Swift

S ingapore has awarded Taylor Swift a grant to perform in the city-state, government authorities said on Tuesday, acknowledging efforts to persuade the pop superstar to perform on the island - her only stop in Southeast Asia.

Swift is set to perform six sold-out shows in Singapore early in March.

The tourism board and culture ministry did not disclose the amount of the grant, but in a statement referred to the economic benefits brought by Swift's concerts around the world due to her popularity, and said the ministry had worked with concert promoter AEG Presents to get Swift to perform in Singapore.

"It is likely to generate significant benefits to the Singapore economy, especially to tourism activities such as hospitality, retail, travel and dining, as has happened in other cities in which Taylor Swift has performed," they said.

Singapore has seen a boom in concerts since pandemic lockdowns ended, with big names like Blackpink , Coldplay and Ed Sheeran playing sold-out shows.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told a business forum on Friday that Singapore had paid Swift 100 million baht ($2.77 million) per show, allegedly on condition that Singapore would be Swift's only show in Southeast Asia.

The Singapore government did not comment on the exclusivity clause, though AEG has said Swift's sole concert stop in Southeast Asia will be on the island nation, with VIP tickets going for S$1,228 ($913.55).

In the broader Asian continent, Swift also performed in Tokyo, earlier in February.

Her Singapore concerts will span March 2 to 9. Over 300,000 tickets were sold to fans who queued overnight in the blistering tropical heat.

AEG Presents was not immediately available for comment.
