For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.
However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?
We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.
Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Adventure Travels
With trips on every continent, Exodus Adventure Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten-path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Adventure Travels to a friend).
These small group tours operate with only around 8-16 people and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Adventure Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Aventure Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.
Exodus Adventure Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.
Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Adventure Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 15 Favorite Tour Operators of 2024
Travel + Leisure readers have selected their top tour operators for 2024. Check out which companies made the cut in our annual “World’s Best Awards” survey.
How Voting Works
What readers loved about tour operators, the full list.
Courtesy of Timbuktu Travel
An experienced tour operator can elevate a trip from “great” to “unforgettable.” So it stands to reason that many of the votes in Travel + Leisure ’s World’s Best Awards came from repeat customers — readers who know not to let go of a good thing. And though there are a few generalist luxury travel companies on this year’s list, many have a specific niche, from walking tours to regional expertise.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:
- Staff/guides
- Itineraries/destinations
- Accommodations
For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.
Many of the top-rated tour operators this year are specialists of some description, such as bicycle-focused DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 3) or Classic Journeys (No. 11), which focuses on walking tours.
Quasar Expeditions (No. 2) operates boutique Galápagos cruises and Patagonia trips. A repeat customer highlighted their dedicated regional expertise: “Their incredible local hires brought enriching cultural experiences to each journey.”
Another company with a niche, AdventureWomen (No. 5) offers small group tours for women. “I continue to work with them again and again,” one voter wrote. “I really enjoy my fellow travelers, small groups (only 14 people), and interesting places with a focus on culture and activities through a woman’s perspective.”
Timbuktu Travel
A new entry to the World’s Best Awards, Timbuktu Travel (No. 1) is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and coordinates trips throughout Africa, South America, Asia, and Antarctica. T+L readers particularly appreciated the company’s website, which allows users to create a custom trip (including hotels, activities, and transfers) with an estimated price. For readers, the cost transparency was a “very rare” perk for a luxury travel company. And, with so many repeat customers, it seems the vacation experience matches the planning process. “I have been on four safaris with Timbuktu and about to leave on my fifth. Their care and organization is exceptional,” said one reader.

His Deaf Friends Had Bad Travel Experiences, So He Did Something About It
Two decades ago, terry giansanti created the deaf-owned, deaf-led international tour company hands on travel; 350 tours later, he talks about what’s changed and what still needs to..
- Copy Link copied
Hands On Travel leads tours in 60 countries, including Croatia.
Imagine being a deaf American who has traveled to the Leaning Tower of Pisa only to be told you can’t enter without a hearing person present. Consider how humiliating and patronizing and stressful this could feel. Unfortunately, several deaf and hard of hearing Americans traveling abroad have reported encountering such barriers, borne out of inaccessible environments, and cultural biases about what deaf and hard of hearing people can and can’t do safely.
Terry Giansanti, founder of the deaf-owned tour operator Hands On Travel (formerly called Hands On Italia), is trying to make deaf travel less friction filled. Since 2002, his company has organized more than 350 tours for small groups as well as private trips, led by local deaf guides in more than 60 countries with more than 4,000 deaf customers whose primary language is American Sign Language.
Giansanti was inspired to start Hands On Travel when he was living in Italy more than two decades ago. After graduating from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. (the world’s only bilingual ASL–English university), he moved to Rome to work at the 2001 Deaflympics. And when fellow deaf American friends complained of negative travel experiences during the games, he had an idea of how to do better.
I spoke to Giansanti in September 2024, while he was leading a group tour of the Balkans—Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro, and Macedonia—with 15 deaf Americans. It was evening in darkened Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, on his end, and a sunny afternoon in northern Virginia on mine.
Why did you decide to leave behind America for Rome? And where in the U.S. are you from, exactly?
I was born and raised in Maryland and grew up in Greenbelt, mostly. I have Italian roots from my grandfather’s side. While in college, I went backpacking across Europe twice, and it aroused an interest in me to experience living in Europe after graduation. So I took the jump. Expected to stay a couple years, but that turned into 25 years (and counting).
What’s Hands On Travel’s origin story?
During the 2001 Deaflympics in Italy, many of my friends came to visit Rome. As an American living in Rome, I wanted them to enjoy the city and be impressed with what it had to offer. Unfortunately, some mentioned their bad experiences during their time in Rome and when I asked them to explain—they gave reasons that made me reply, “Oh no, you should have done this, not that” and so forth.
It made me realize that there was a lack of accessible information for deaf people at that time and inspired me to set up a business in order to provide that access and knowledge to them in direct communication, given that ASL is my mother language and also the mother language of almost all of our participants.
Can you give an example of a bad experience a friend shared with you?
It was a long time ago but it was mostly about going to the wrong place to eat, staying at the wrong location, missing some important sights, going to the wrong area, that kind of stuff.
Recently a deaf American influencer’s post went viral when she was denied entry into the Leaning Tower of Pisa without a hearing person accompanying her. Has that been your experience? How do you handle such issues?
Deaf people face stereotyping, discrimination, and oppression in many places all over the world, in addition to lack of clarity and communication. It can be stressful and embarrassing.
Since they have paid money to travel, it is our job to act as a sponge in these situations, to remove that unpleasant friction from their shoulders and take it onto our shoulders. That way, they don’t have to experience negative energy while traveling. It still happens because it’s impossible to 100 percent filter out, but our goal is to reduce that percentage down as much as humanly possible.
How would you describe the state of deaf travel today? What is it like to be a deaf traveler in 2024, and how is it different from previous years?
Things have improved a lot since we first started in 2002. Part of it is obviously thanks to technology. In 2002, we didn’t even have smartphones. There is more access to information nowadays so it is somewhat easier for deaf people to travel independently equipped with tools they need to have a successful trip.
Travel involves lots of variables outside of people’s control, so it requires adaptability and thinking outside of the box.
What do you mean by somewhat easier?
It’s not 100 percent easy, never will be. Travel cannot be 100 percent easy for anybody—not only deaf people; that’s just not possible. Travel involves lots of variables outside of people’s control, so it requires adaptability and thinking outside of the box. For deaf people, it’s even harder due to the lack of visual cues or visual communication in many popular tourist destinations.
What would you like to see change to make it easier for deaf people to travel?
America needs to establish a national disability ID card that every disabled person can get in order to “prove” their disability. [ Ed. note: Some countries, such as India , Israel , and Japan , have national disability identification cards. Also, the European Union (EU) is close to adopting a disability card that would apply to all member states within the EU .] Deafness in particular is not a very visual disability. Worldwide, in order to get reduced or free admission to tourist attractions they often request ID card as proof of disability, and that’s something Americans don’t yet have. That would make things a lot easier for deaf people in many places worldwide.
Many deaf people are also starving for more resources to help them plan their travel abroad. Deaf-friendly destinations. Deaf-friendly experiences. Local deaf guides. Deaf social events. Deaf-centered sights.
Many deaf people are also starving for more resources to help them plan their travel abroad. Deaf-friendly destinations. Deaf-friendly experiences. Local deaf guides.
What makes your company unique from other deaf-owned tour operators?
First, I believe that we are the first American deaf-owned and deaf-run tour operator that operates, organizes, designs, and runs our own tours with full communication access, small group sizes, and unique travel experiences.
Now, there are more deaf-owned tour operators in the field, which is a good thing because it ensures that deaf people are empowering each other in the travel industry, which is a huge industry worldwide nowadays.
But we feel that we’ve proven over 22 years in business that we continue to be at the forefront of the deaf-owned tour operator industry due to our accumulated experience, customer service, and unique offerings. And that, with us, people know what they’re getting from their investment into their travel, which is our full effort, energy, and attention to them in small group sizes, which ensures everybody stays involved.

I joined an incredible tour and had an amazing time! Bruno, our tour guide, was exceptional—he wore many hats as a driver, chef, and car mechanic. We visited numerous lakes for swimming and sightseeing, making it feel like a scenic car ride. I met wonderful people from around the world and truly experienced the essence of Canada on this tour. I felt connected to nature throughout the entire tour, watching the stars and moon between the trees.
Solid 8/10 trip. Got to see everything on the itinerary, plus some wildlife! Such a fun trip full of adventurous activities like white water rafting and paddle boarding.

After the first day which was very long the tour was very enjoyable. The tour guide were very knowledgeable. The scenery was beautiful and was as listed in the itinerary. The accommodations were very nice. The staff at Tour Radar were very professional answering my questions in a timely manner. They gave me a refund for an activity that was included but unable to do because of the fires.
Calgary Tours has a very solid organizational logistics plan in place making sure that each day, the right people are on the right bus. Not sure how they do it, but it was amazing. I expected that Calgary Tours would have set us up at some low rated hotels. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotels we stayed at were great. One tour guide that stands out is Allen. He went out of his way to ensure that our last night stay in Calgary was ready to go. His bilingual language skills in both English and Chinese assured that his passengers received a very clear understanding of the important places we visited. Allen is a great asset to Calgary Tours.

I went on a tour to the Rocky Mountains and it was an insanely great trip. You see an impressive landscape and really get to know Canada. You travel a lot by bus, but that's no problem because there's enough space and plenty of breaks. The staff are very competent, all questions are answered, everything is well planned and you always feel that you are in good hands. The hotels were well chosen and you always have time to do something yourself and discover the places. I can definitely recommend the trip and there is hardly anything to improve.
The tour was really worth going to. Especially because of the tour guide, Chris and the driver, Yee. They were both really helpful and friendly during the tour. We got good recommendations for shopping and dining. They also helped us take nice photos. All the places we stopped were beautiful. We had some changes to the itinerary due to wildfire but we were able to enjoy that change too.

Hotels in beddeck was substandard Hotels in Halifax and Charlottetown
Overall: Overall, the Canadian Rockies are spectacular. All of the people in our group were fun to be with, and we made some great friends. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, patient, and flexible given the physical abilities (or inabilities) of the members of the group and tried to tailor the tour to accommodate as many people in the activities as possible. My issue was with Intrepid's misrepresentation of the physical activity level rating, the inaccurate pricing of optional activities, the required travel insurance policy, the sub-par lodging, and the labeling of the trip as a Northern Lights trip when there were only 2 nights out of 10 listed in the itinerary that gave us an opportunity to see them. Lodging: The hotels were sub-par. The Metterra in Edmonton didn’t have a functioning hair dryer and the TV didn’t work (during the SuperBowl) The Holiday Inn Express in Slave Lake didn't have a functioning fireplace in the lobby, where we gathered to eat dinner. It was cold as it was adjacent to the front doors the were constantly opening and closing. The TV in the breakfast room and where we met to eat take out dinner was on a political station and the volume was loud. The person working at the front desk stated that the remote control had been stolen, so we couldn't turn it off or adjust the volume. The Lake Louise Inn had disgusting carpeting that we didn’t even want to walk on with bare feet. The Rundlestone Lodge in Banff did not have any food or drink options in the hotel and we had to walk to another hotel to get our included breakfast. The breakfast at that hotel was also sub-par. The eggs were powdered eggs. The bread, bagels, and pastries were all stale and hard. Everyone had a room where the window looked DIRECTLY into the pool area. It was noisy with kids screaming at the pool. One of the members of our group had to pay to upgrade her room, so she wouldn't have to hear the noise from the pool area until 10:30 PM. Intrepid Activity Level rating: Intrepid listed this physical activity level rating as a 2/5, which is one step above sunbathing. It said that the activities were easy and no prior physical fitness was necessary to do most of the activities. First, many of the activities were done at higher altitudes than most were accustomed to, which makes any activity more challenging. Second, walking on ice, hiking on steep mountain trails, and snowshoeing in deep snow require a much higher level of fitness than casual walking. Itinerary: The itinerary was labeled a Canadian Rockies and Northern Lights tour. There were only 2 nights listed on the itinerary (in Slave Lake) that there was even an opportunity to go out to see them. The northern lights and weather conditions are unpredictable, so it should not be listed as a “northern lights tour” unless there would be an opportunity to see them every night. The tour guide had drive time restrictions and couldn’t take us out every night to remote areas to get the chance to see the northern lights. On an Iceland tour, we had our lodging (with restaurant and bar) in remote areas with minimal light pollution, so I could set my alarm a few times throughout the night to go outside to see if the lights were visible. The quality of northern lights can change on an hourly basis and it is not reasonable to expect to stay outside in a remote area without light pollution all night to see them. All the hotels we stayed at had significant light pollution preventing us from going outside the hotel to check the quality of the northern lights. Don’t label it a northern lights tour. It was a Canadian Rockies tour. Slave Lake activities: The ice fishing listed as a possible alternate activity was never discussed. No one said the lakes were safe or not safe for fishing. It was not discussed as an option at all. Snowshoeing was also listed as an activity at this location, but was not given as an option. Jasper activities: Walking on ice in the Maligne Canyon was challenging and risky for people who aren’t physically fit. There were a few people that had to skip the grotto for fear of injuring themselves by going further. Similarly, on the drive along the Icefields Parkway, none of us were able to hike all the way to the toe of Athabasca Glacier due to the level of fitness required. Lake Louise activites: Difficulties with the level of fitness required also impacted the hike at Johnston Canyon. Some people struggled but managed to make it to the lower bridge, but many could not go further due to the fitness level needed to hike up the steep trails. Snowshoeing was offered as an option and one group member had to insist to go snowshoeing here, since the terrain was flat. Otherwise, it was also not included as an option. Banff activities: This was the snowshoe hike at Sunshine Mountain. Despite it being listed as an option twice before on the itinerary, this was the first day we went as a group. It was challenging to say the least. Half of the group were not able to participate due to the level of fitness required that was misrepresented in the tour description rating. The next day the grotto ice walk was listed, but not offered and instead we went on a hike. Optional Activities: There was a SIGNIFICANT discrepancy of the prices listed for the optional activities on the tour description and the actual prices. It seems the prices listed by Intrepid were pre-COVID prices and had never been updated. I understand if there would be a minor difference in prices, but they were 40-70% higher than Intrepid quoted. Here are examples of the activity and price per person. Dogsledding (an anticipated highlight of the trip, which we ended up not going on due to price): Intrepid price $200 CAD and actual price was $315CAD. Lake Louise Sleigh ride: Intrepid price $37CAD and actual price was $52CAD Lake Louise Ice Skating including hockey stick: Intrepid price $20CAD and actual price was $29CAD Banff Hot Springs: Intrepid price $8CAD and actual price was $17.50CAD Travel Insurance: I have the AmEx Platinum card that has very good travel insurance coverage. Intrepid forced me to buy a separate policy stating that I needed a “policy number” and not just claims made coverage that my credit card supplies. I had to pay an extra $174USD to get travel insurance when my credit card already covers travel insurance. Then I found that one of the guests in our group used her credit card policy and did not require a separate travel insurance policy to go on this trip. That was infuriating! White Mountain Adventures: White Mountain Adventures was coordinating this trip and I felt they were at a disadvantage to plan a trip when the Intrepid itinerary and physical activity level was misrepresented prior to the trip. Scott, our tour guide, was very kind, knowledgeable, patient, accommodating, and flexible to try to meet the expectations and physical abilities of those on the tour.

Interesting tour, hitting all the high points on the east coast if Canada. Will come back again to spend more time in the cities as the tour touches on everything but not enough time which is expected. Very comfortable hotels and transport. The train to Halifax was great, excellent service and well worth doing, would recommend adding this on to all the trips.

Very nice tour. Would have liked more time in a place or two but, overall, good.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.
Fresh Adventures
- Excellent - 87 reviews for Canada tours
I had a blast! Mother nature threw rain, mosquitos and an aching hip my way, but all I have are fond memories of this adventure. Marge and Louie were well organized, keeping us informed of the itinerary and (mostly) on schedule while having the flexibility to adapt to unexpected things like a highway closure or the group wanting to go for beers after a day of rafting and adventure. The food was a great balance of healthy and comfort food meals - the bison burgers were a bonus. The hikes were amazing! I like how they made adjustments depending on the group's fitness level. The option to go rafting on the last day was a great addition to the adventure. I live close enough to the mountains I could do a lot of these hikes on a weekend trip, but I would definitely book again with Fresh Adventures just for the added experience they provided.
Great trip! Our guides, Jeremy and Laurie were amazing… because we arrived a couple of days after the Jasper fires they worked hard the whole time to adapt the plans to avoid smoke and fires around us. Their cooking was on another level - very healthy and we even had a fondue one day, up in the mountains!
Europamundo

On the first leg from Chicago to Niagara Falls, we had an excellent travel companion in a modern Mercedes coach. Later we continued from Niagara Falls to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The now large coaches were regularly too cold, so that the passengers sometimes had to "warm" themselves with jackets and long pants. One major drawback, however, was that there was no WiFi available from Niagara Falls onwards. That is actually a shame. Nevertheless, all the tour guides made a great effort. The hotels were also "okay" to "good". Thank you very much for this trip, we met very nice people from all over the world.
My family and I enjoyed the whole tour. Arrangements for transport, accommodation, local tours and guide, all have been well planned and suitable. Our special thanks to Luis who professionally arranged everything and we had no problem at all during our 10 days. I also like to mention about the driver who been very proficient throughout the trip. Will again plan trip with Europomundo in future. Salim Muhammad Melbourne, Australia

Just not good, and not worth the money.
There are two parts to this review. Our tour guide Shannon Eyres was extremely helpful and very attentive to our needs. We felt she was very professional and although new to the actual tour route, was thorough in researching our questions. Her efforts in guiding us was worth a 9/10. We appreciated her thoughtfulness. The other side of this tour was disappointing given the costing. My wife and I paid over $9000 for a fully serviced 4 day guided trip. We had to fight for a breakfast that was included and the hotel stays were much less standard than we expected. It appeared that the hotel stays were organised very late and not anywhere near the standard our payment should have afforded. All in all, somebody has made a significant profit from our choice of tour. Whether that is Tourradar or Globaldinya needs to be further investigated! This has hurt our overall enjoyment of a life experience!

My mistake probably. I thought this was a tour as it is expensive. It is only expensive because the hotels are very expensive. Brewters company gives a bit of guidance but Sundog is just a transfer company (take you from one paoint to another). So the agency books hotels and transfer that is it. Can do it yourself for cheaper. There are no groups, no guide and two of my drop off and pick up were at the wrong hotels. You also need to call so have a canadian number each day to call transfer company to confirm your pick up so be ready to spend money on a canadian sim card. Tour or agencies would be better as they actually ask what you really want and as for me a cheaper hotel would have been better and easier as hotels booked where out of town and without a car it is not always easy to go around. Real disappointment as this is sold as a tour with many lookout point but it is just wikipedia recommendations. I use Intrepid or Gadventures which provides tour where you meet people and what you pay is really what you have definitelly stick to what I know. What needs an improvement is the way to describe it you cannot say it is a tour when it is not and if you get people asking for it maybe ask what they are really looking for like a tour operator. if you are looking at this tour you can just book 2 nights in each town in nice hotels there are plenty and brewster transfer and this will not take you much time. If you need an agency call a tour operator which will hopefully ask your needs what you want in terms of accomodation, budget, activities to tailored it and this is worth the extra charge. If thy dont do it yourself you save some money.
Every employee we met from pick up @ the airport to drop off after our final trip to the Aurora Center was wonderful - Professional, pleasant, and friendly. Price was right! Hotel was OK. My one important critique was we got absolutely no info on the Aurora Borealis. I expected a video or “lecture” or some explanation about what we were looking for/seeing. (And, so so so very happy we saw them!!!) This was a trip specifically to see the northern lights and we heard nothing about them. I will (and have steady) recommend your tour to others but tell them to study up on the Aurora before they go. Thanks for asking!

Chuck was great, encouraging and super organized. Gave our choices and made sure all could do what they preferred.
Had a great time on this trip with a friendly group and a very helpful, happy but professional guide.

Overall the trip was good but there were some problems with time constraints in certain areas.

The tour guide gave conflicting information to different people which caused us to have to take an Uber from our hotel to the restaurant for dinner and then the bus (that was at the hotel) proceeded to take others from the hotel to the restaurant.
In quebeck and Montreal the hotel was very far from the centre! And I would like to have breakfast included with the deal. Elizabeth was great and the driver drove very save.
