Ratanakiri Adventure Tour FAQs

What is ratanakiri known for.

Ratanakiri, a gem nestled in northeastern Cambodia, is famous for its unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant indigenous cultures. Its name, which translates to "mountain of gems", hints at the precious stones found in its lands.

But beyond gem mining, Ratanakiri's real treasure is its verdant jungles, mystical waterfalls, volcanic lakes, and rich wildlife, offering an offbeat destination for those seeking adventure and natural splendor.

Its ethnic diversity is another distinctive trait, with over a dozen indigenous hill tribes residing in harmony, each preserving their distinct languages, customs, and traditions.

Among these, the Kreung and Jarai communities are particularly known for their intriguing traditions and intricate handicrafts. Eco-tourism initiatives give visitors a chance to learn about these cultures firsthand, further enhancing the region's appeal.

How many days do you need in Ratanakiri?

A stay of at least two days is recommended to truly appreciate what Ratanakiri has to offer. This provides enough time to visit the highlights, like the Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake, Cha Ong Waterfall, and Virachey National Park, without rushing.

For those interested in deeper cultural immersion, an additional day can be devoted to visiting local villages, participating in handicraft workshops, or engaging in community-led activities, such as traditional farming or fishing.

When is the best time to visit Ratanakiri?

Ratanakiri's climate can be divided into two main seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The dry season, particularly December to February, is generally considered the best time to visit. During this period, temperatures range from a comfortable 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making it ideal for outdoor explorations and wildlife spotting.

On the other hand, the wet season, despite regular rain, presents its own charm. The scenery becomes lush and vibrant, water bodies reach their full grandeur, and the temperatures hover around a warm 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F).

While some roads may be tougher to navigate during heavy rain, the spectacle of nature's revitalization provides an enthralling backdrop to your adventure.

Ratanakiri is the final frontier and the ‘wild east’ Cambodia with the province bordering both Vietnam and Laos. The town of Banlung is still very rustic as it was difficult to access for so many years. Now the infrastructure is much improved and developments are evident throughout the sleepy market town.

The real reason to come here to visit however is not the town itself but the hidden gems scattered throughout the province. Ratanakiri still has plenty of undiscovered corners with outstanding natural beauty from thundering waterfalls to rugged jungle where you can trek for days without seeing another person to stunning river boat trips along unspoiled waterways.

Visit Ratanakiri

This was once the area of the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail and remnants of these trails are still accessible to this day. This is one of the few areas where an abundance of megafauna can still be seen if you are very lucky. The region is also known for its traditional gem mines which once yielded an abundance of precious stones.

A visit to one of the numerous indigenous ethnic groups still living in close knit communities in the area is like stepping back in time and witnessing history, you’ll most likely come across some of the following communities Brao Kachac, Kreung, Bunong and Tampuan groups, however there are over12 groups living in the hills of the region. As a primary reason to visit is trekking, it is certainly worth slowing down and taking a few days to fully appreciate all that this once remote destination has to offer.

A Brief History of Ratanakiri Province

Ratanakiri province has a long and rich history. Located in Cambodia’s mountainous northeast, it was once part of the ancient Khmer Empire. For centuries, Ratanakiri was home to indigenous tribes like the Tampuan, Kreung, and Jarai people.

In the 19th century, the area became a protectorate of French Indochina. The French were attracted to Ratanakiri’s natural resources and used forced labor to harvest materials like precious woods, gemstones, and gold. Their oppressive rule lasted until Cambodia gained independence in 1953.

Today, Ratanakiri is one of Cambodia’s most ethnically diverse and least populated provinces. Roughly half the residents belong to indigenous tribes, each with their language, spiritual beliefs, and cultural traditions . Some tribes continue a semi-nomadic lifestyle, hunting and foraging in the forest.

One of the best parts about visiting Ratanakiri is all the natural beauty and outdoor adventures. Here are some of the top things to do:

-Trek through Virachey National Park. This massive park spans over 3,300 square miles of lush forest, rivers, and waterfalls. Spot rare wildlife like sun bears, gibbons, and hornbills along the hiking trails.

-Explore volcanic lakes. Boeng Yeak Lom and Boeng Chhmar are two of the most stunning. Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle around, surrounded by jungle.

-Visit indigenous villages. Many ethnic minorities like the Jarai, Tompuon, Kreung, and Kavet live in traditional villages around Banlung. Take a guided tour to learn about their unique cultures and way of life in the forests.

-See the waterfalls. Some of the most spectacular are Cha Ong, Kachang Svay, and Kachang Kranh. Swim in the refreshing pools, sunbathe on the rocks, and enjoy a picnic in nature.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ratanakiri?

Dry season: december to may.

The dry season from December to May is the best time to visit Ratanakiri. During these months, the temperatures are more pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F), and there are fewer chances of rain. The lush green landscapes are still vibrant from the rainy season, and the red dirt roads are easier to navigate without the mud.

You’ll encounter thinner crowds as most tourists visit during the peak dry months of January through March. Accommodation rates are also more affordable during the shoulder months of December and May. The Elephant Festival is held in February, featuring cultural activities, elephant racing, and more.

Rainy Season: June to November

The rainy season runs from June to November and sees heavy downpours, especially from July to September. While the rains bring stunning waterfalls and greenery, dirt roads can become impassable. Temperatures remain hot and humid, ranging from 21°C to 32°C (70°F to 90°F).

Accommodation rates drop significantly, but some businesses operate on shorter hours or close down. If you visit during these months, be prepared for the rain and book tours in advance since options are more limited. The rains usually only last a few hours, so you can still enjoy activities when the sun comes out.

In summary, the dry season from December to May is the optimal time to visit Ratanakiri if you want to enjoy the pleasant weather, vibrant scenery, and thinner crowds. But the rainy season also has its charms if you’re prepared for some downpours and limited accessibility. Either season, Ratanakiri’s natural beauty will make it worth braving the elements!

Travellers visit this off the beat province to explore the wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls and wildlife thriving in the deep lush jungles. It is a province worth exploring for tourists looking for some adventure and nature.

Ratanakiri was declared as a province of the Kingdom of Cambodia in 1960 under King Norodom Sihanouk's rule. Banlung is the capital city of this province. The original inhabitants of this region are highland Khmer Loeu people, who have been living here since the 4th century.

The people of this community were traded off for slave labour during the 19th century. The situation turned worse during the Khmer Rouge period, who established their presence in Ratanakiri province, thus signalling mass destruction of natural resources as well as population.

Overview of ratanakiri province.

Ratanakiri is a province (khaet) of Cambodia located in the remote northeast. It borders the provinces of Mondulkiri to the south and Stung Treng to the west and the countries of Laos and Vietnam to the north and east, respectively. The province extends from the mountains of the Annamite Range in the north, across a hilly plateau between the Tonle San and Tonle Srepok rivers, to tropical deciduous forests in the south. In recent years, logging and mining have scarred Ratanakiri's environment, long known for its beauty.

Ratanakiri is located in Cambodia's far northeast bordered by Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east, Mondulkiri to the south, and Stung Treng to the west. This rural rugged province is a 70% ethnic minority, which are known as "Chunchiet". Ratanakiri was as recently as 2002 seriously off the beaten track but has since been "discovered" step by step.  Still, while you won't get any bragging rights for coming here, it's well worth the effort to do so, and once you get away from it's capital Banlung you won't run into too many other tourists. So Ratanakiri is still a remote province in Northeastern Cambodia worth to visit. The word "Ratanakiri" itself is a derivative of two Cambodian words, which are combined to mean "place of gems and mountains." The word comes from the Sanskrit words Ratna (gem) and giri (mountain).  It's quite dusty capital, Banlung, is located in the central highlands of the province, approximately 365 miles (586 kilometres) from Phnom Penh and reminds one of a wild western city, even if it's the wild east. Its wide red laterite roads are bordered by new, recently build houses replacing the older ones. The centre of the town features a lively marked with all the needful things.  Lomphat is a small town in the southern plains, which was once the former capital of Ratanakiri. There are a few other small towns like Ta Veng and Voen Sai. The province is getting more and more popular for thousands of tourist every year. Especially for those, who seek a close contact to originality, hidden roots of ethnic groups and abundant wildlife. Therefore the Ecotourism abounds, due to lush wildlife and remote tribal villages. Most of the inhabitants of Ratanakiri are indigenous minorities.  Ethnic Cambodians make up only 10-20% of the country's total population. Remnants of an ancient volcano exist near to Banlung in the form of a crystal-clear lake that was formed after the active volcano went dormant. There are also a few ancient lava fields that testify to the fact that the area was quite lively at one time. Beautiful waterfalls, clear rivers winding through stretches of jungle, and rolling hills that meet mountains near the Vietnamese and Lao border provide a full agenda for nature lovers. Non-structured, low-impact, custom trips to outlying villages and natural areas can be organized (strictly by yourself or with help from a guesthouse).  There is a few foreigners living in Banlung you'll definitely meet while walking in the streets you can ask for actual tour offers, prices etc (change spontaneously). You will soon realize that this area hasn't seen a lot of tourists in the past. If you will visit the hill tribe people in the further areas outside of Banlung, don't be surprised if they look appalled at you. They just haven't seen many, if any, foreigners.  Yeak Laom Volcano Lake: This beautiful place is not far from town and is great for a swim, picnic, or hike around the crater rim of the old volcano. Due to the lake's tremendous depth of 48 meters, its water is exceptionally clean and crystal clear. The lake is almost perfectly round and measures around 750 meters in diameter. It has a small informative local museum thrown in to boot. In 1995 the governor of Ratanakiri officially set aside a 5,000-hectare (12,350-acre) protected area, of which the lake is a part, and in 1996 got help from the International Development and Research Centre of Canada and the United Nations Development Program to develop an effective resource management program.  This area represents Cambodia's finest attempt at preserving a site. Full-time rangers work to ensure the area is protected. They receive regular training and have put up signs throughout the area reminding people not too littler, wash clothes or toilet in the lake. That's amazing for Cambodia. The main swimming and picnic area features a nice wood deck that's great to use for a jump into the crystal clean water. Nearby, park rangers erected a couple of examples of hill tribe construction in the form of non politically correct bride and groom homes, where the man gets the elevated home (his status in the relationship) and the woman has the one nearer to the ground.  A few hundred meters down is the Cultural and Environmental Centre, which has information about area history and displays of local hill tribe tools and handiwork. They also sell some of the handicrafts made by the hill tribes: musical instruments, beaded belts, shirts, and hats. From the centre you can take a nature trail around the entire crater rim. King Sihanouk had a chalet built on the shores of the lake and used it during the 1960s. It was destroyed in the 1970 war between the Lon Nol government and Khmer Rouge guerrillas.  You can still see the remnants of this and also-indifferent spots around the lake-trenches that held gun emplacements during the fighting. The original inhabitants of the area are the Khmer Leu hill tribe people, who have always recognized the lake as a sacred place, home to the spirits of the land, water, and forest. Here those spirits interact with humans and, according to the local legend of Yeak Laom Lake, fabulous, spiritual aquatic beings reside here.  The surrounding forests of the area are also said to be the home of spirits and therefore can't be cut. This helps to explain why the hill tribe people took so strongly to the idea of protecting the area. It's very easy to get there - just go east from the Independence Monument circle 3 km to the Hill Tribe Monument circle (two indigenous figures) and go right for about 1,5 km to the entrance gate. The local hill tribe community connected to the lake get to collect an entrance fee, giving them a source of income and revenue for protecting their resource. It?s US$1 per person and a few hundred riels for a motorcycle.

Ratanakiri is situated on the north - east plateau (approx. altitude around 200-400 metres), 636 Km from Phnom Penh. It is bordering Vietnam on the east, Laos PDR on the North, Steung Treng province on the West and Mondulkiri on the South. There are two bigger rivers crossing the province ( Sre Pork and Sresan River ). The total area of Ratanakiri is about 10,782 square kilometres.

There are 8 different hill tribes ethnic groups in Ratanakiri. Most of them live in the deeper jungle, on the hills and covered mountains in small separated villages. Usualy they make their living through traditional ways of cultivation ( shifting agriculture), hunting and collecting fruits from the forest is a must. These old cultures believe in spirits, derived from their animism beliefs. In the whole province there are 63,333 male and 64,774 female with a total of 128,107 inhabitants living. This is 11.8 inhabitans/km.

Ratanakiri Province has a climate like the other areas in the country, there are 3 seasons : - Rainy season: June - October (<27c) - Cool season: November- February (>24c) - Hot season: March- May : Temperature: from 20c -32c Ratanakiri's average temperature throughout the year is definately lower than in the other areas of Cambodia (except Mondulkiri Province).

The vast majority of the indigenous peoples living in Ratanakiri are subsistence farmers, who are planting rice, corn, pumpkins etc. Some of them grow an additional catch crop such as peanuts or cashews. There is quite a number of wealthy Cambodians and Vietnamese, who own large plantations surrounding the capital of Banlung. Most of them plant peanuts, coffee, or cashews.

Additionally, Ratanakiri boasts hundreds of square miles of lucrative rubber plantations, of which rubber is mostly exported to neighbouring Vietnam. Due to the present reconstruction of the Cambodian National Highway 19, which runs through the center of the capital of Banlung, the area's trade with Vietnam will soon rise. Anyhow Ratanakiri is so sparsely populated that the Provincial capital does not have an adequate market compete to other provinces of Cambodia. But in mineral wealth alone, Ratanakiri boasts gold, gemstones, granite and onyx. Fertile red soil, water sources, wild animals and quality hardwoods abound and the weather and scenery are perennial assets.

Overview Of Ratanakiri

cambodia tour packages

In the northeast of Cambodia, bordering Laos at Attapeu and Vietnam in Gia Lai and Kon Tum, is Ratanakiri province. The section covers an area of 10,782 square kilometers and consists of a municipality and 8 counties, with the capital being Banlung. This area is home to more than 184,000 residents, representing 1% of the country’s population. In the past, it was formerly occupied by the Khmer Loeu. However, due to the impact of the colonial war and the Khmer Rouge civil war, the indigenous people here have changed, mainly Jarai, Kreung, and Tampuan.

The terrain of Ratanakiri is varied from mountains, plateaus, and waterfalls to lowland basins and crater lakes. It was estimated that in 1997, more than 80% of the province’s area was old-growth or secondary forest, which thrived on fertile basalt soil. This land is also famous for many precious ores, such as rubies and sapphires. Tourism in the province began to develop in 2002, focusing mainly on eco-tourism in parallel with preserving traditional values. The local government also provides English language and tourism skills programs for locals to improve the quality and better experience for visitors.

What To Do In Ratanakiri

There are plenty of things to do in Ratanakiri that Cambodian Tour Packages may suggest for travelers. However, there are the most must-visit attractions and must-try experiences:

Watch Beautiful Waterfalls

cambodia tour packages

Ka Chanh is a waterfall in the commune of the same name, named by the Kreung ethnic group. This 12-meter-high waterfall is about 6 km southeast of the capital Ban Loung. It originates from the Kan Teung Canal and empties into the Sere Pok River, Lum Phat district. Along the canal are rubber plantations leading upstream, providing shade and stunning views. After descending 72 wooden stairs, visitors will reach the foot of the waterfall, which is suitable for camping, picnicking, and swimming in the cool blue water. In addition, here, they also provide elephant riding and experience services; you can book in advance.

About 7 km southwest of Ka Chanh is Katieng waterfall in Lbang I commune, Lumpart district, where you can ride an elephant here. The waterfall is named after the Kreung hill tribe, Ka Kieng village. This spot is about 10m high, with a flow throughout the year. The scenery around the road to the waterfall is lined with forest trees, suitable for picnicking, sightseeing, and relaxing. It is also one of the places less visited by tourists, so it is quite quiet for those who want to find a peaceful little corner.

cambodia tour packages

About 2 km west of Ban Loung town is Cha Ong waterfall, located in the forest of Cha Ong village, far from O’Chum. It is the highest waterfall in Ratanakiri, about 25m, with the flow originating from Phnom Eysei Patamak and Phnom Svay. Visitors can go to the stream below it to comprehensively view the waterfall, with a large cave and many large rocks. You can rest in the cave and immerse yourself in this natural flow or sit on those rocks to see its magnificence.

Experience Highland Tour

Highland Tour, founded in 2010, is a company dedicated to providing guided tours around Banlung. The staff can speak Khmer, English, French, and indigenous languages. Visitors may have jungle trekking trips for one day or optional days, staying in homestays of ethnic minorities. The trips are intended to help travelers immerse themselves in the local culture, from the surrounding nature to traditional customs, beliefs, and food culture, especially the local dolphin dish.

Challenge Sona Trekking

Sona Trekking is provided by an experienced local guide, Keo Sona. In addition to ethnic minority languages, he can also speak English, Lao, and a little French. This service offers trekking trips lasting from 1 to 7 days, depending on visitors’ needs. Visitors can join the trip to experience the locals’ life, customs, food, and nightlife, including a campfire. Moreover, the instructor can provide more knowledge about medicinal plants, dangerous animals in the forest, and how to distinguish the types of bamboo to use as baskets or houses for local inhabitants.
