The Best Pillows for Side Sleepers 2024
All products featured on Architectural Digest are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Side sleeping is the most popular sleep position for adults, so there’s a good chance you’re among the 54% of individuals who love curling up on their sides to sleep. And though there are many reported benefits to sleeping on your side—like reduced sleep apnea —certain positions can cause neck and shoulder strain, potentially leading to nerve pain and soft-tissue issues in the spine. If you fall into this category, you’ll want to invest in a high-quality pillow to keep your neck and spine aligned while you sleep, which can help prevent next-day pain and stiffness.
To help you achieve a good night’s sleep, we’ve rounded up 11 of the best pillows for side sleepers—including doctor-approved recommendations, top-reviewed online faves, a handful of great alternatives, and high-quality bed pillows team AD has tried ourselves .
Our Pick for the Best Overall Pillow for Side Sleepers: Luxome Layr Pillow
The Luxome Layr is a high-end, customizable pillow that can be adjusted to different lofts, a.k.a. pillow heights. Since medium- to high-loft pillows are best for side sleeping and offer the right amount of support for your neck, the Luxome Layr can be tailored to the perfect fill with the material of your choice. This level of customization is the main reason we’ve chosen this side sleeper pillow as our number one pick. Learn more about why we love it below.
Our Top Picks
Best overall pillow for side sleepers: luxome layr pillow, best pillow for side sleepers with neck pain: saatva latex pillow, best pillow for side sleepers with shoulder pain: nectar tri-comfort cooling pillow, best latex pillow for side sleepers: brooklyn bedding latex pillow, best soft pillow for side sleepers: coop sleep goods eden pillow, best cooling pillow for side sleepers: helix glaciotex cooling memory foam pillow, best budget pillow for side sleepers: brooklinen marlow pillow, best pillow for side and stomach sleepers: lagoon otter pillow, best pillow for side and back sleepers: tempur-pedic tempur-neck pillow, best organic pillow for side sleepers: birch organic pillow, best memory foam pillow for side sleepers: saatva graphite memory foam pillow.
Luxome Layr | Saatva Latex | Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling | Brooklyn Bedding Latex | Coop Sleep Goods Eden | Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam | Brooklinen Marlow | Lagoon Otter | Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Neck | Birch Organic | Saatva Graphite Memory Foam
Luxome Layr Pillow
- Material: Memory foam and/or down alternative
- Loft: 1–4 inches
- Firmness: Customize to soft, medium, or firm
- Trial Period: 30 days
- Warranty: None
- Adjustable loft (pillow height) and firmness
- Mix-and-match memory foam and down alternative pillow inserts
- Four cooling features, including gel-infused memory foam
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? The Luxome Layr Pillow allows you to mix-and-match memory foam and down alternative pillow inserts to customize the loft and firmness of your pillow. Since side sleepers will likely feel most comfortable on a medium-to-firm pillow, Luxome Layr can be tailored to just the right amount of fill for your taste. Simply add and remove inserts until you find the best pillow height to keep your spine neutrally aligned.
What does this pillow feel like? The Luxome Layr Pillow has some of the best configuration options that we’ve seen in an adjustable pillow. Our testers found the two-inch firm memory foam insert to be the most comfortable and natural-feeling for side sleeping, but you can always opt for shorter inserts with medium firmness if this arrangement is too firm for you. The gel infusion in the memory foam was a major bonus as well, since this helped keep us cool during our trial naps.
What do we love about this pillow? We love that the Luxome Layr Pillow can be customized to just about any sleeping style and preference, including side sleeping. You can also opt for a plumper pillow configuration with thicker inserts to add more structure and fullness to your bed.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? Although the Luxome Layr runs on the more expensive side (starting at $120 per pillow), the brand doesn’t offer a warranty. This means if you run into manufacturer defects outside of your trial period (which is just 30 days), you may be stuck with your pillow or out of money if you decide to replace it.
- Support level: 5/5
- Durability: 5/5
- Cooling: 4/5
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 3/5
Saatva Latex Pillow
- Material: Latex
- Loft: 5 or 6–7 inches
- Firmness: Medium
- Trial Period: 45 days
- Warranty: 1 year
- Made with shredded, hypoallergenic latex
- Two loft options of 5 or 6–7 inches
- Removable and machine washable fill layer
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? With its shredded (and naturally hypoallergenic) latex core, the Saatva Latex Pillow can help prevent neck pain thanks to its supportive build. Side sleepers can opt for the brand’s high loft pillow, which has six-to-seven inches of medium-firmness height to keep your neck and spine neutrally aligned.
What does this pillow feel like? Our product testers noted that Saatva’s shredded latex core easily molds to the shape of your head. This keeps your neck in neutral alignment, which can help prevent a stiff or sore neck. The high loft is also great for keeping your head elevated, so you’re less likely to feel like you’re sinking too far into your pillow (which is a common culprit for neck pain).
What do we love about this pillow? Saatva’s latex pillow gets a stamp of approval from side sleeper and senior digital design editor Sydney Gore , who called the 100% organic and shredded latex pillow “even more comfortable IRL.” Prone to an achy back, Sydney was impressed to find out the pillow’s claims of essential back and neck support were actually true when she woke up feeling exceptionally well-rested thanks to the comforting material.
Saatva is also one of our favorite mattress brands . If you experience neck or back pain, we recommend pairing the Saatva Latex Pillow with the Saatva RX mattress, which is designed specifically for those with pain along the spine. The Loom and Leaf , Saatva’s memory foam mattress, is another good option that our team has had positive experience with.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? The Saatva Latex Pillow comes in standard and high loft options, both of which may be too tall for smaller individuals. If pillows with high loft cause your neck to arch upwards, you may want to opt for a shorter pillow with a loft around four inches.
- Support level: 4/5
- Durability: 4.5/5
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 4.5/5
Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling Pillow
- Material: Memory foam and down alternative
- Loft: 6 inches
- Firmness: Adjustable firmness
- Trial Period: 50 days
- Warranty: 5 years
- Pressure-relieving memory foam clusters
- Moisture-wicking cooling cover
- Adjust to soft, medium, or firm support
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? If shoulder pain is keeping you up at night, you may have a pillow that’s not supportive enough. The Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling Pillow can be adjusted to three levels of firmness, so you can customize it to the right amount of support for your body. Its memory foam clusters can help support side sleepers by contouring to the shape of your head and neck, taking pressure off your shoulders. Nectar is known for its affordable comfort, which is why we also rank its mattress as one of our best mattresses on Amazon .
What does this pillow feel like? The Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling Pillow is moldable and has a good amount of contouring, which you can adjust by zipping or unzipping certain sides (making the pillow more or less firm to alleviate shoulder pain). Our product testers reported the microfiber down alternative material also adds a touch of softness, which is a nice addition if you opt for the pillow’s firm support option (some of us just love a bit of plushness in our pillows).
What do we love about this pillow? We love how the Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling Pillow can be adjusted to different levels of firmness, so if a pillow that’s too plush causes you shoulder pain, you can easily amp up the firmness by zipping or unzipping certain sides of the pillow. While some adjustable pillows can be a pain to adjust, Nectar has simplified the process. Additionally, the 50-day trial period goes well beyond the standard 30-day window offered by most pillow brands, which is why we’ve given Nectar Tri-Comfort Cooling Pillow a five-star rating for its trial.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? We would like to see multiple height options. While the firmness of the pillow can be adjusted, the six-inch loft may be too tall or short for some side sleepers.
- Durability: 4/5
- Cooling: 3.5/5
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 5/5
Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow
Brooklyn Bedding
- Loft: 4 or 5 inches
- Trial Period: None
- Warranty: 3 years
- Naturally hypoallergenic
- Cooling Tencel cover
- Low or high loft design
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? While some pillows have to be fluffed back into shape, the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow keeps its shape and support thanks to its bouncy, latex material. Side sleepers should feel adequate support all night long without having to mold and manipulate their pillow into a more comfortable shape. It’s also versatile enough to place behind your back for even more support. “If you prefer sleeping on your side, it helps to place a pillow behind the upper back to kind of prop you up so that you do not roll onto your back,” says chiropractor Brian Meenan, DC . “This takes less pressure off of the shoulder joint.”
What does this pillow feel like? The Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow has a cooling Tencel cover, which is a highly breathable material that promotes ventilation and wicks away moisture. While testing this pillow, our product testers felt nice and cool. Its latex foam core also contours to the unique shape of your head and neck, offering custom pressure relief in the areas you need it most.
What do we love about this pillow? We love that Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow has a generous amount of resistance, which helps keep your pillow from going flat overnight (leading to potential neck or back pain). Another benefit of latex foam is that it’s nice and cool, so if you sleep hot, the Tencel cover can help ward off night sweats and keep you comfortable in hot weather.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? The Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow may be a budget-friendly buy, but we would have liked to see at least a short trial period offered. That’s because it may take a few nights (or even a few weeks) to fully get a feel for your pillow’s support, and you don’t want to be stuck with a pillow you’ll end up disliking.
- Cooling: 5/5
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 2/5
Coop Sleep Goods Eden Pillow
Coop Sleep Goods
- Material: Memory foam and microfiber
- Loft: Adjustable
- Trial Period: 100 days
- Adjustable fill for various lofts
- Machine washable cover
- Cooling gel-infused memory foam
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? While a medium-to-firm option may be your best bet for side sleeping, you don’t have to sacrifice softness in exchange for good neck support. Enter Coop Sleep Goods Eden Pillow, a medium-soft adjustable pillow that can be customized to various heights and firmnesses (and one of our favorite pillows on Amazon ). Filled with cooling gel-infused memory foam and microfiber, this pillow is ideal for those who love a more plush feel.
What does this pillow feel like? The Coop Sleep Goods Eden Pillow may run soft, but it still offers plenty of support for side sleeping to keep your neck and spine in good alignment—a nice balance that our product testers loved. The memory foam and microfiber fill has a plush feel that’s similar to down, but with more structure. One of our side sleeping testers removed about a quarter of the fill and said the 75% fullness offered the best combination of support and cushioning. She also said that removing about 50% of the fill allowed her to flip between side and back sleeping by scrunching up the pillow when she switched to her side.
What do we love about this pillow? The best feature of Coop Sleep Goods Eden Pillow is its adjustable loft. Not only does the pillow come with plenty of fill, it also includes an extra half-pound of fill if you’re looking for a higher loft or a pillow with more structure to elevate the look of your bed. If the filling feels like too much, you can remove as much as you’d like.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? Our tester loved this pillow, but her only qualm was having to store the unused fill. Some brands don’t provide a way to store extra fill, but Coop Sleep provided a fabric storage bag, which she appreciated; however, as a minimalist, she wondered if she’d be better off tossing the extra fill, while her husband wanted to keep it “just in case.” This callout isn’t necessarily something we’d change, but it’s worth considering, especially if you finally threw out that bag of old cords and don’t want to add more stuff to your closet.
- Support level: 4
- Durability: 4
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 5
Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow
- Material: Memory foam
- Loft: 4.75 or 5.25 inches
- Available in two different lofts
- Made with dust-resistant hypoallergenic fibers
- Cooling and contouring memory foam core
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? Whether you run hot or live in a warm climate, tossing and turning all night because you can’t cool down can easily disrupt your sleep. If you’re a side sleeper who falls into this category, a cooling pillow like Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow can help wick away sweat and keep your sleep environment cool and comfortable. The two loft options help side sleepers choose the support level they need based on shoulder width and comfort preferences.
What does this pillow feel like? The Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow is highly moldable thanks to its memory foam core, meaning it can contour to the shape of your head and neck. Our product testers felt plenty of support, while its medium-firm touch offered gentle pressure relief for their shoulders. The cooling fabric also stayed cool and breathable.
What do we love about this pillow? Aside from its advanced cooling features, we love the Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow because it offers natural alignment for the spine. We felt that our head was at just the right height to prevent next-day neck or back pain. And surprisingly, its memory foam core didn’t retain much heat—which is unique for memory foam—probably because of the heat-dispelling copper infusions in the foam.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? The Helix GlacioTex Cooling Memory Foam Pillow standard and high loft variations have only a half-inch difference, so we would have liked to see a greater height range to accommodate sleepers who may prefer a pillow on the shorter or taller side.
- Support level: 4.5
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 4
Brooklinen Marlow Pillow
- Material: Memory foam and polyester fiber
- Firmness: Adjustable
- Trial Period: 365 days
- Warranty: 2 years
- Adjustable loft and firmness
- Two zippers for no-mess adjusting
- 100% cotton cover
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? Side sleepers on a budget don’t have to shell out on an expensive pillow. Instead, Brooklinen Marlow Pillow offers an affordable (and adjustable) sleep option that looks and feels like a high-end pillow. Featuring both adjustable loft and firmness, its two zippers offer no-mess adjusting without the need to add or remove fill.
What does this pillow feel like? Brooklinen Marlow Pillow may be adjustable, but it runs on the firmer side, which offers just the right amount of support for side sleepers (our product testers say the pressure relief was excellent). Its cooling-infused memory foam allows air to pass through the pillow, and its breathable cotton cover helps wick away sweat and moisture.
What do we love about this pillow? Adjustable pillows can easily get messy, especially when you’re adding or removing fill (which can get just about everywhere). Brooklinen Marlow Pillow’s no-hassle design lets you zip and unzip two zippers to change the loft or firmness of your pillow instead of adding or removing fill.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? Even when fully unzipped, the Brooklinen Marlow Pillow probably won’t feel soft to you. This isn’t necessarily something we’d change, since some side sleepers prefer a firmer pillow, but if you’re a fan of something more plush, you may want to seek out a softer pillow like the Coop Sleep Goods Eden Pillow.
- Cooling: 4.5
Lagoon Otter Pillow
- Made with cooling gel-infused memory foam
- Adjustable loft (pillow height)
- Built with sustainable and eco-friendly materials
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? If you’re a combination sleeper who flips between side and stomach sleeping throughout the night, an adjustable pillow like Lagoon Otter Pillow can help ensure your pillow has just the right height to support your head and neck. With its shredded memory foam core, simply add or remove fill to change the loft of your pillow.
What does this pillow feel like? The shredded, gel-infused memory foam core allows plenty of air to pass through, so our product testers felt breezy and comfortable. Lagoon Otter Pillow also has a medium firmness, which offers adequate support for both side and stomach sleeping (we tried and enjoyed both with this pillow, though the loft may be too tall for some stomach sleepers).
What do we love about this pillow? The Lagoon is Otter’s tallest pillow, which makes it ideal for side sleeping. However, combination sleepers who love sleeping on their stomach can also remove fill to bring down the height of the pillow for better spinal alignment.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? Lagoon Otter Pillow only comes with a 30-day trial period, which isn’t as generous as other brands. We would have preferred a longer trial period to get a feel for the pillow’s performance over time.
- Shipping, warranty, and trial: 3.5
Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Neck Pillow
Tempur-Pedic
- Loft: 3.5 to 4.75 inches
- Firmness: Very firm
- Removable and washable cover
- Contoured design follows natural curve of your body
- Designed for side and back sleeping
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? Dr. Meenan’s ideal pick for a side sleeper is Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Neck pillow, which has a curved shape also ideal for back sleepers. “I always recommend a hybrid of back and side sleeping,” he says. “What this means is that the individual would lie more on the back of the shoulder instead of directly on the side of it.” Tempur-Pedic’s pillow has a dual-curve construction, with the larger curved surface being the best option for most side sleepers, per Dr. Meenan’s recommendation.
What does this pillow feel like? The Tempur-Neck Pillow’s contoured design follows the natural curve of your body, cradling your head and neck while you sleep. Our product testers noted excellent shoulder alignment and neck support while using this pillow, but said it took between one-to-two weeks to adjust to the firm feel. During those first two weeks, they experienced some neck discomfort, but it resolved once they adjusted to the new pillow.
What do we love about this pillow? The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Neck Pillow is made with classic, slow-moving memory foam, which means it’ll mold around the shape of your head and neck. Still, despite this feature, it retains a firm touch that allows you to feel relaxed yet supported.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Neck Pillow doesn’t have cooling properties beyond a breathable cover, so we’d like to see cooling features like perforated foam or gel infusions. We’d also like to see at least a 30-day trial period rather than none. Finally, the Tempur-Neck pillow is essentially a solid slab of memory foam, which may take away from the look and aesthetic of your bed. You may want to hide these pillows behind decorative pillows for a cleaner look.
- Support level: 5
- Durability: 4.5
Birch Organic Pillow
- Material: Birch wool and latex
- Loft: 5 inches
- Firmness: Medium-firm
- Breathable latex core
- Wool outer layer for wicking away moisture
- Ethically sourced materials and sustainably manufactured
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? Eco-conscious side sleepers will love Birch Organic Pillow, which is made from sustainable materials sourced worldwide like cruelty-free Birch wool from New Zealand and natural latex from Southeast Asia. It’s also topped with a 100% organic cotton cover. Side sleepers specifically will appreciate the support of the five-inch loft and medium-firm feel.
What does this pillow feel like? Our product testers note that Birch Organic Pillow is definitely on the tall side, so you’ll feel ample support around your head, neck, and shoulders while sleeping. We also found that its responsive latex core makes the pillow easy to move around on (a bonus if you turn side-to-side while sleeping).
What do we love about this pillow? We love that despite its medium-firm build, Birch Organic Pillow retains its softness thanks to its plush but substantial Birch wool layer. With the best of both worlds, this pillow caters to fans of firmer pillows, as well as those who love a touch of softness.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? While a five-inch loft may be ideal for many side sleepers, smaller individuals may find this pillow a little too tall for their liking, so we wish Birch offered a three-inch version too.
Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Pillow
- Material: Memory foam and latex
- Loft: 6.5 inches
- Graphite-infused memory foam included to draw away heat
- Removable and machine washable knit cover
- Hypoallergenic materials
Why should side sleepers choose this pillow? Memory foam products are notorious for overheating, so the graphite infusions in Saatva’s Graphite Memory Foam Pillow are especially welcome. This pillow for side sleepers includes tiny graphite flecks embedded throughout the memory foam, which draws away heat from your pillow and body and helps you stay cool. Its breathable, shredded memory foam and latex core further promotes breathability. The 6.5-inch loft is ideal for side sleepers with broad shoulders, and the medium firmness helps with pressure relief.
What does this pillow feel like? Our product testers say the Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Pillow feels supportive and contouring, thanks to its moldable core and high loft of 6.5 inches (and you can definitely feel the height while sleeping). Its advanced cooling features also helped our hot sleepers stay cool, while its breathable cotton-knit cover was great at wicking away sweat.
What do we love about this pillow? We love the responsiveness of the memory foam and latex core, which nicely contours around your head, neck, and shoulders for great spinal support. The shredded core also keeps this pillow ventilated with adequate airflow.
What would we change, if anything, about this pillow? Similar to the five-inch Birch Organic Pillow, we wish Saatva offered multiple height options of its Graphite Memory Foam Pillow. A 6.5-inch loft may be pushing it for smaller side sleepers, who might benefit from a slightly shorter loft of four or five inches. If this loft feels too tall for you, you may want to opt for another pillow or an adjustable option like the Lagoon Otter pillow.
How We Choose the Best Pillow for Side Sleepers
Our sleep experts chose the best side sleeper pillows by testing each pillow on our list, in addition to over a hundred more, to determine which pillows offered the best support for side sleeping. We laid and napped on each pillow (on our sides, of course) to get a feel for the pillow’s loft, firmness, comfort, cooling technology, and support for different body types. We also considered the pillows shape and materials, prioritizing pillows that could easily fit behind decorative bed pillows and were made with durable materials.
During testing, we took strides to test and collect data on the best side sleeper pillows in ways the average shopper may not be able to do in-store or online. These tests included:
- A cooling test that uses a thermal gun to detect temperature
- A pressure relief test using a pressure map under our testers
- Measurement of each pillow to determine if its loft, or height, is as stated
Having multiple side sleeper pillows from various brands in the same room helped us pinpoint their key differences, such as design, build, and overall feel. These comparisons allowed us to determine how much loft is too much for neutral spine alignment while side sleeping, as well as what level of firmness was ultimately the most comfortable and supportive for side sleeping. Working together as a group and comparing our feedback also helped us conclude if we were being extra picky with our pillows, or if certain pillows just didn’t make the cut for side sleeping.
In addition, we also considered factors that impact every buyer, like return policies, trial periods, and warranties to determine if investing in each pillow would be a smart move.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Side Sleeper Pillow
Dr. Meenan says the right pillow for a side sleeper should put the least amount of stress on your spine and neck. “You want your neck mostly in neutral, not bending too far to the right or left when lying on your side,” he says. Betsy Grunch, MD, FAANS, FACS agrees that neck support makes all the difference. “I often see patients with neck and back pain that worsen during side sleeping,” she says. “I recommend a good supportive pillow to keep their neck in perfect neutral alignment during sleep.”
“The most common complaints for side sleepers are shoulder, jaw, and hip pain,” echoes Alyssa Hickey, DC CACCP , who specializes in pregnancy care. “I always suggest a pillow that will prevent your shoulder from rolling in,” she explains. “This will support both the neck and shoulders, decreasing the likelihood of carpal tunnel or at least expanding the amount of time you have before symptoms arise.”
In addition to these expert insights, here’s a breakdown of the top factors to consider when shopping for a pillow as a side sleeper.
The loft, or the pillow’s height, should be at the top of your list when shopping for a side sleeping pillow. The reason? “A higher loft helps fill the space between your head, neck, and the mattress, ensuring your spine stays in a neutral position,” says pain management doctor Taher Saifullah, MD . Not only does this help keep your spine neutrally aligned, but it also helps prevent any next-day pain in your neck or back.
Dr. Saifullah says the ideal loft for side sleeping is four-to-six inches, which is just enough support to keep your spine neutrally aligned.
Most experts agree a medium-to-firm pillow is best for side sleeping. “These pillows provide the necessary support to keep the head and neck aligned with the spine, preventing the head from sinking too deeply,” says orthopedic surgeon Ladd Jones, MD . So if your head is sinking too far into your pillow, it may not be the best choice for side sleeping.
Pillow moldability refers to how easy it is to manipulate a pillow into the shape you want. A pillow with excellent-to-moderate moldability can go a long way in supporting your neck and spine during side sleeping. “Memory foam and latex pillows are excellent choices, as they contour to the shape of the head and neck, which provides personalized support,” Dr. Jones says.
If you run hot while sleeping, a pillow with cooling technology can make sleeping on your side much more comfortable. “Look for pillows with gel-infused memory foam or breathable materials like latex,” Dr. Saifullah suggests. The Saatva Graphite Memory Foam pillow could be a good option.
You can also invest in pillow covers with cooling fabrics, like breathable cotton, to help keep your pillow cool if the pillow itself feels too warm for your taste.
As Dr. Jones mentioned above, memory foam and latex pillows are excellent choices for side sleepers, since these materials help your pillow mold to the unique shape of your head and neck. “Latex pillows are naturally resilient and supportive,” Dr. Saifullah adds, “which helps them maintain their shape and provide consistent support throughout the night.”
Still, you’ll want to steer clear of one popular pillow material if you sleep on your side. While down pillows may be luxurious and soft, they likely won’t offer enough support for side sleeping, Dr. Saifullah says.
This list includes some of the best pillows for all price points, but before shopping around, you’ll want to consider your budget, especially if you’re planning to purchase a mattress for side sleepers or other bedding. Investing more money in a high-quality pillow over a budget buy may be worthwhile long-term, and can help guarantee your pillow will maintain its loft and firmness over time (after all, you don’t want your pillow to go flat after one month of use).
However, it’s not just face value you’ll want to consider when finding the perfect side sleeper pillows. Be sure to take warranty and trial period into account. In the event that your pillow gets damaged or doesn’t live up to manufacturer claims, a good warranty can cover the cost of a replacement pillow. A lengthy trial period, meanwhile, can give you more time to test your pillow to determine whether or not it’s right for your comfort preferences, body type, and bedroom aesthetic.
Poor quality pillows won’t last as long as their high-quality counterparts. Luckily, memory foam and latex, which are two of the best pillow materials for side sleepers, tend to last the longest (anywhere from two-to-four years). Be sure to clean and care for your pillow regularly to help extend its lifespan (here’s our guide on how to wash your pillows properly).
A few other features can help elevate and customize your sleeping experience. Adjustable pillows, Dr. Saifullah says, can be a great option for side sleepers looking to adjust their pillow loft to the ideal height. “By adding or removing filling, you can tailor the pillow to provide the perfect level of support,” he says.
A pillow with an ergonomic design, such as a contour or cervical pillow, can also be an excellent choice for side sleepers with neck or back pain. “These have a raised edge and a depression in the center to support the natural curve of your neck,” Saifullah explains.
Meanwhile, side sleepers with allergies may want to opt for latex pillows, which are naturally hypoallergenic.
A medium-firm pillow with a loft of four-to-six inches offers the best support for side sleeping and can help keep your neck and spine neutrally aligned. Pillows made out of memory foam or latex are also great options for side sleeping and can conform to your body.
A side sleeper should use a medium-firm pillow to help keep their spine in neutral alignment. A pillow that’s too soft may cause your head to sink down, which can cause neck or back pain.
Memory foam is one of the best pillow materials for side sleepers. Since memory foam contours to the unique shape of your head and neck, it can offer just the right amount of support.
Most experts recommend replacing your pillow every two years, but a pillow that’s well cared for and made out of quality materials may last up to four years. If your pillow is sagging or losing its shape, or if it’s developed an odor that just won’t budge, it may be time to replace your pillows.
Tempur-Pedic's Labor Day sale is here — this is the mattress I recommend for back sleepers
Save up to $400 and get $300 of bedding accessories when you buy the Tempur-Adapt
Tempur-Pedic drew from NASA technology to create the iconic Tempur Material foam, and you can get space age sleep for less in this early Labor Day sale. Tempur-Pedic is offering up to $500 off the Tempur-Adapt mattress range , and you can add $300 of sleep accessories to your order for free. That's a queen for $1,999 (was $2,199) plus whatever pillows, sheets, or protectors you've had your eye on.
We've tested a lot of beds putting together our best mattress guide, and the Tempur-Adapt is one of the best when it comes to pressure relief. Those dense foams gently hug the body wherever you press against the mattress, reducing aches and pains for back and side sleeprs.
We're seeing some big deals already in this year's Labor Day mattress sales , including this rare chance to save on the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt. And let's not forget those extras. Take your pick of Tempur-Pedic sleep and bedding accessories and save $300. Here's why it's my pick...
Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt mattress Was: from $1,699 From: from $1,499 Saving: up to $400 + $300 of bedding accessories at Tempur-Pedic
Summary: The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt is one of the best memory foam mattresses on the market, as well as an excellent choice for couples. It's no surprise to see a Tempur-Pedic mattress deliver the classic foam feel — Tempur Material was the original memory foam — and with the Tempur-Adapt you'll get a deep, pressure relieving 'hug' that cradles sleepers. In our Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt mattress review we found its balance of support and cushioning was excellent for back sleepers, especially those with joint pain, but stomach sleepers should look for something a little firmer.
We also found the Tempur-Adapt can sleep a little hot, with those dense foams trapping heat. Upgrading to the Tempur-Adapt Hybrid can improve cooling, but it's the Tempur-Breeze collection you should look at for the best cooling mattress . The flipside of the slow moving foams is that they provide high quality motion isolation, so if you share with a restless sleeper, the Tempur-Adapt will help you stay snoozing even as your partner wriggles all over the place.
Benefits: 90-night trial | 10-year warranty | Free white glove delivery
Price history: Tempur-Pedic is offering up to $500 off the Adapt range, although you will have to upgrade to the LuxeAdapt mattress to get the maximum discount. There's $200 off the majority of the Tempur-Adapt sizes, with $400 off the split king. You'll also get $300 of Tempur-Pedic sleep accessories with your purchase using code 300FREE — and you get to decide what your free gifts are. Tempur-Pedic mattress sales are semi-frequent but we rarely see the Adapt line reduced outside major holidays. Now is a great time to shop, with a queen knocked down to $1,999 (was $2,199).
How many years does a Tempur-Pedic mattress last?
Tempur-Pedic mattresses come with a 10-year warranty, which is standard for a mattress. However, considering these are premium beds, we might expect something a little longer. Tempur-Pedic competitor Saatva offers a lifetime warranty, as does mid-range brand Nectar.
However, we recommend replacing your mattress every six to 10 years, and your Tempur-Pedic should remain supportive for that time period. If you want to ensure your Tempur-Pedic mattress lasts as long as possible, make sure you have the right bed base . The wrong bed base won't provide the support the foams need, and you might notices your mattress sagging prematurely.

If you’re a hot sleeper, you know that all the air conditioning in the world won’t prevent that sweaty, uncomfortable feeling that comes with using the wrong bedding. While cooling sheets and comforters can help, if your pillow retains too much heat, you’ll be tossing and turning all night long. The best cooling pillow, however, can lead to a more restful night’s sleep without having to flip the pillow over and over again to find the cool side.
The More You Know
Two of the pillows on this list — the Slumber Cloud UltraCool and Core Down Alternative — utilize Outlast fabric , a temperature-regulating material that was first developed by NASA engineers. This fabric is used on both sides of the pillow to fight off heat.
From side sleepers to those who swear by ultra-firm pillows, PEOPLE testers tried out 35 different pillows over several nights to find those with enough cooling properties to regulate your temperature while you sleep.
Keep scrolling for the 11 best cooling pillows that PEOPLE tested, including ones for side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and adjustable options for a customizable sleep experience.
Best Overall
Coop sleep goods the eden pillow.
Fits a wide variety of standard pillowcases
It’s gel-infused throughout to keep you cool all night long
Entire pillow is machine washable
Pillow has a light odor when first opened
This pillow by Coop won our vote for best overall not only because of its cooling capabilities but also for its customization features. It’s easy to add or remove the gel-infused fill to create a firmness or softness that is unique to you. Plus, this pillow actually stayed cool all night.
This one would have received a perfect score if it didn’t have a noticeable odor upon taking it out of the packaging that lingered even after consistent use. While it was only really noticeable when we buried our face in it, we could see this being irritating for people who sleep on their stomachs. With this in mind, we still loved this pillow and were amazed at just how well it worked all night. Plus, the customization option is great for those who have a hard time finding the right pillow.
Dimensions: 27 x 18 inches | Sizes: Queen, king | Fill Material: Memory foam with gel and microfiber | Cover Material: Polyester, rayon | Height: 8.5 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
Best Budget
Mainstays cooling pillow.
Comfortable and noticeably cool
Great value
Provides ample neck support
Gets a little lumpy with use
No cover included
This pillow from Walmart's Mainstays line functions as two pillows in one: one side has cooling properties, and the other is meant to be soft and comfortable. Not only is the price right, it felt noticeably cool to the touch during testing, and the other side was pleasantly soft and springy.
Testers were pleased with its temperature regulation and performance but were also impressed with how well it maintained its shape and provided ample neck support for those who sleep on their back and side. The fill also happens to be antimicrobial and hypoallergenic and is even made from recycled plastic bottles.
It's important to note that this pillow does not come with a cover, so you may have to purchase a protective cover separately. However, perhaps its biggest drawback is that it became a bit lumpy when the fill was moving around, so it may function better as a pillow for a guest room where affordability might be more of a deciding factor than longevity.

Best for Very Hot Sleepers
Slumber ultracool pillow.
Maintains its coolness through the night
Comes in two firmness levels
Keeps neck and head supported and comfortable
Soft/medium pillow gets too soft as it warms up
According to our tester, this Slumber Cloud pillow maintained its cool-to-the-touch feel for days, even writing, “How is this still cool?” during their first night with the pillow. That’s why we think it’s a great option for very hot sleepers who would pick cooling properties in their pillow over any other attribute. Luckily, there’s not much to sacrifice with this option: its down alternative fill is thick and sturdy while still managing to feel extra soft.
It comes in two firmness levels. Those who sleep on their stomach will likely enjoy the softer option, while side sleepers might appreciate a sturdier pick. Plus, it’s softer than memory foam because it uses down alternative polyfill, which is likely to please stomach sleepers as well.
Our tester did find that the soft/medium pillow may get too soft over time — as it warms up, it gets softer until it loses its structure entirely. While that may be solved with the firmer option, those who prefer a medium between the two will likely not appreciate how compressed it gets.
Dimensions: 20 x 26 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Down alternative polyester fiberfill | Cover Material: Polyester knit | Height: Not listed | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Best for Side Sleepers
Saatva latex pillow.
Latex core keeps you nice and cool
Has a loftier feel, which is ideal for side sleepers
Machine washable and bounces back to its original shape
Takes a few cycles to fully dry
This pillow from Saatva comes with a zippered cover, a machine-washable outer pillow, and an interior pillow with latex filling. This unique design is why it does an excellent job of keeping you cool throughout the night — but it won our vote for side sleepers because it was loftier than other options we tested, which means it’ll support your head and neck while you sleep.
Because it is a bit firm, it does take a few days for it to truly mold to your body shape and provide ample support. It’s also almost entirely machine washable — aside from the latex core, you can throw the whole thing into the washer with no fuss. We did find, however, that it took several dryer cycles to properly get all of the moisture out.
Dimensions: 27 x 17 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Latex | Cover Material: Organic cotton | Height: 8 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
Best for Stomach Sleepers
Sleep number true temp pillow.
Stays cool through the night
Supportive yet soft, making it ideal for stomach sleepers
Pile height decreases after extended use
This soft and supportive pillow by Sleep Number is a great option for those who sleep on their stomachs. It’s a plush and airy option that feels soft to the touch. We were impressed at how this pillow performed overnight — it did so well at dissolving body heat that our tester didn’t even have to flip the pillow to the other side.
If firmer pillows are your preference, foam options like our pick from Tuft & Needle are a far better fit, but stomach sleepers are likely to love this one’s more plush feel. Plus, it still provides ample support, holding its shape well during testing.
This Sleep Number pillow did start to lose a bit of its pile height over time, and while this is fairly common for softer pillows, it’s something to note. And while the cover is washable, the pillow is not, so if you need to clean it, you’ll have to take it to the dry cleaners.
Dimensions: 24.5 x 16.5 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Memory foam | Cover Material: Synthetic fiber | Height: 8.5 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low (cover only)

Best Down Alternative
Slumber cloud core down alternative pillow.
Even after washing, pillow maintains its fluffiness
Outlast lining fabric repels heat
Isn’t as soft as expected for a down alternative pillow
Down pillows are known for their softness, but if you don’t like the way they retain heat (or their classically high price), we’ve found a great alternative that still feels plush while keeping you cool. This pillow by Slumber Cloud is stuffed with a fiber fill that mimics the signature feathers of down, but it’s also made with a lining that uses NASA-approved technology to properly regulate heat.
We were very impressed by this during our testing. Not only is it cool to the touch upon taking it out of packaging, but it keeps the air flowing all through the night. It’s also machine washable, and even after throwing it in for a cycle, it still maintains its shape and softness.
This pillow, however, isn’t overly soft, which may be a drawback for those looking for something that directly mimics down feathers. However, if you’re a hot sleeper who prefers pillows that are on the softer side, this is a great pick.
Dimensions: 25 x 18.5 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Poly-silk fiber fill | Cover Material: Silk | Height: 4 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Marlow The Pillow
Two side zippers allow you to modify the firmness
Holds its shape over time
Spot clean only
This pillow by Marlow is customizable, with side zippers that allow you to modify the firmness of the pillow according to your comfort. And the modifications aren’t the only reason it made our list. As soon as we took it out of the packaging, we could tell how well-made it was. During testing, no fibers came loose, and the zippers never got stuck or ran off their tracks.
For those who want firm pillows that aren’t entirely made of foam, like the Tuft & Needle option, this one is only 80 percent foam, allowing for the pliable customization that makes it so unique. And while it isn’t exactly cool to the touch, it still has cooling properties — and during testing, nobody reported getting noticeably hot overnight.
Dimensions: 24 x 16 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Memory foam and polyester | Cover Material: Cotton | Height: 5 inches | Care: Spot clean only

Best Memory Foam
Tempur-pedic tempur-cloud pillow.
Stays cool to the touch all night
Moves with you throughout the night and provides support in any position
Cover is machine washable
Pillow is heavy, so it’s not going to look plush and airy on a made bed
As soon as we took this Tempur-Pedic pillow out of the packaging, we were amazed at how luxurious and soft it felt. With most pillows we tested, we noticed a chemical smell (even with our top pick, the Eden pillow ), but we didn’t find that at all with this option. The cooling features were also on point, as one side stays cool all night long.
Whether you’re a side, stomach, or back sleeper, you’ll appreciate how this pillow is flexible but firm and adjusts to your unique movements so it can provide support in all the right places when you change positions at night. Additionally, the material itself is incredibly flexible, so you can compress it and pack it for travel without it losing its shape.
However, one potential drawback we noticed was that, due to its firmness, it won’t look full and airy on a made bed. Still, the comfort combined with the cooling technology allowed us to see a noticeable difference in sleep quality from the jump, which makes it worth the price.
Dimensions: 24 x 15 inches | Sizes: Standard | Fill Material: Memory foam | Cover Material: Polyester | Height: 5 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow
Stays cool all night even with prolonged use
High-quality foam provides a supportive yet bouncy feel
Not machine washable
If you like the firm, supportive feel that foam pillows have to offer, we love this one by Tuft & Needle, which scored above average in our tests. And despite it being a firmer option, it still felt nice and cool to the touch throughout our testing. We also didn’t notice any transfer of body heat to the pillow’s surface, and it kept up a steady level of air circulation all night long.
Even after consistent nightly use, it maintained its shape and loft regardless of how it was moved throughout the night, which is one of the things foam pillows are known for. Basically, if you’re a big fan of flat, sturdy pillows over light and fluffy options, this is a great pick.
One thing we didn’t love, which is pretty standard with foam, is that the pillow itself wasn’t machine washable — just the cover. Throwing the cover in the wash is easy, but if you want a pillow that you can clean as needed, you may find this frustrating. However, the cooling properties and the support exceeded our expectations, even for dense foam.
Dimensions: 25 x 16 inches | Sizes: Standard, king | Fill Material: Adaptive memory foam | Cover Material: Micro polyamide and polyester | Height: 5 inches | Care: Machine wash cold (cover only)
Best Adjustable
Qutool cooling shredded memory foam pillow.
Retains its shape with extended use
Comes with two pillows
Noticeable odor out of the bag
Our tester described this adjustable pillow from Amazon as “icy to the touch,” while the fill and soft outer shell kept the neck supportive and comfortable. Like the Mainstays option , this pillow only has one cooling side, which allows you to use it in two different ways. Our tester didn’t have any hot or uncomfortable nights, and even though it looked flatter than other options they had tried, they noted it was soft and fluffy to sleep on.
The biggest drawback was the chemical smell that came with the pillow right out of the packaging, although it did dissipate quickly. There also wasn’t a lot of fill that came with the pillow, so if it gets flatter over time, it won’t bring it back to its original shape. Still, for under $50, you can get two cooling pillows, which is quite a deal.
Dimensions: 19 x 30 inches | Sizes: Standard, queen, king, camping | Fill Material: Shredded gel memory foam | Cover Material: Polyester | Height: Not listed | Care: Machine wash cold (cover only)

Best Splurge
Tempur-pedic tempur-cloud breeze dual cooling pillow.
Strong memory foam bounces back after use
Firm yet comfortable and supportive
Machine-washable cover
Starts to lose its cooling feel overnight
Pillow itself isn’t machine washable
Initially, we weren’t sure how this model would perform in testing, as it felt heavy and firm. But that signature Tempur-Pedic foam really earned its spot on this list. Although dense, it was still very supportive and bounced back as soon as we pulled our hand away from it, looking just as smooth as it did the day we took it out of the packaging.
Even if you prefer pillows on the fluffier side, you’ll appreciate that this one molds to your head’s shape and cradles it in all the necessary places. It’s also cool to the touch, and you can tell that it is designed to keep you from overheating at night. But those who only want a pillow due to its cooling properties may not love this option — while it definitely made a difference, it wasn’t as cool to the touch come morning as some of the other options we tested.
Dimensions: 27 x 19 inches | Sizes: Queen, king | Fill Material: Memory foam | Cover Material: Cotton | Height: 6.4 inches | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low (cover only)
Other Cooling Pillows We Tried
- Sealy All Night Cooling Pillow : At around $20, this Sealy pillow is a great deal, and testers found that it maintained its shape and firmness throughout the night. Plus, it’s machine washable and made with hypoallergenic materials. Unfortunately, we didn’t find that it stayed cool very long. While it felt nice to the touch, the cooling effect ultimately dissipated after just a few minutes of use.
- Serta Cooling Gel Memory Foam Pillow : This Serta option comes with two pillows for $20, making it the best deal on the list. It also has a removable, machine-washable cover and a fill made from gel memory foam. However, we found that the filling is uneven and lumpy, the pillow goes flat quickly, and the outer cover has a plastic feel. Perhaps most importantly, the cooling effect is minimal.
- Threshold Extra Firm Cool Touch Pillow : Another affordable option at just $15, this Threshold pillow from Target was cool to the touch and maintained its extra-firm shape. However, the cooling properties were hard to feel over a pillowcase, and removing the pillowcase wasn’t an option — the outer material itself was uncomfortable and hot, negating the cooling effects entirely.

What to Know About Cooling Pillows
Paying attention to the materials of a cooling pillow is important to gauge both their heat retention and durability. However, the materials that make a pillow durable and long-lasting can sometimes be the exact ones that trap heat, which is most common when working with memory foam.
Memory foam is a material that’s known to be durable and long-lasting, but it also uses the body’s heat to contour comfortably to your head and neck. To combat that, as seen in our top pick , cooling pillows that contain memory foam will sometimes add gel, which helps to dissipate heat while still providing the same level of comfort. Another material inside a pillow’s core that keeps things cool is latex, which utilizes natural rubber tree sap to create a cooler, bouncier fabric that’s still long-lasting.
The material on the outside of the pillow can also help with a pillow’s heat retention and durability. In the case of the Slumber Cloud pillows, it’s the fabric itself that provides the cooling properties by using a heat-regulating fabric. If heat retention isn’t the goal of the pillow’s cover, ones that are made from natural fibers like cotton or silk will add to the quality of the pillow itself.
On another note, material will add to the comfort of your pillow as well; high-quality materials like shredded memory foam or a well-made down alternative will provide a lighter, fluffier feel that won’t flatten out after prolonged use or become lumpy . Memory foam is made to go back to its original shape after use, so it won’t become overly flat over time.
Sleep Position
The position you sleep in plays a major role in what pillow will be the most comfortable for you. When it comes to pillows, sleep positions are defined by the back, the stomach, and the side, and to find the right one, you’ll need to consider firmness and softness, too.
" Back sleepers , like myself, tend to prefer medium-soft pillows, which are those that measure between three and five inches thick," says interior designer Mikel Welch , which usually translates to foam or down pillows. Back sleepers likely benefit from something like the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud Pillow , which is made from soft but sturdy memory foam.
Side sleepers will benefit more from a firm, bouncier pillow like the Saatva Latex Pillow , as it’s important to keep the space between the ear and shoulder comfortable without straining the neck.
Conversely, stomach sleepers will need soft or flat pillows to ensure their head isn’t elevated enough to cause neck pain. The Sleep Number True Temp Pillow is a great pick for stomach sleepers with its plush and airy feel.
There are three main categories of care that cooling pillows fall into. Either the whole pillow is machine washable, only the cover is machine washable, or it’s spot clean only.
For a pillow that will last the longest, look for one that’s entirely machine washable, like the Coop Eden Pillow . This will add to its durability and ensure it stays looking brand new for years to come. Most of the picks on our list are conveniently machine washable.
A machine-washable cover can also preserve your pillow for much longer — as long as you use a pillowcase on top of the cover and wash both frequently.
Finally, spot cleaning is a way to save some money on a pillow, but it’s likely not going to last as long. If you stain it, you’ll have to hope it comes out with warm water or a gentle stain remover.
Behind the Scenes
Our PEOPLE Tested team selected 35 cooling pillows to try firsthand at our homes. After taking them out of the packaging, testers slept on them for a cumulative 3,672 testing hours and periodically checked in with reviews and reflections over six months to see how their quality and performance changed. We also recently retested this category and added three new products to our list. To find the best cooling pillows, we assessed them on the following qualities:
- Loftiness: Before we even laid our heads on the pillow, we began our tests by measuring each pillow's height to determine how thick and lofty the pillow was before use — a measurement which we then consulted again periodically throughout our testing to see whether the loftiness diminished after use.
- Airflow: The most important feature we looked at in each pillow was how well it kept cool. We started by feeling the pillow with our hands to get a gauge of how cold the pillow was before we slept on it. We then put the pillows to the test by sleeping on them, taking note of how warm or cool the pillow felt when we woke up. We also noted whether the pillows stayed cool enough for us to sleep through the night or if we woke up feeling overheated.
- Durability: For pillows that were machine washable, we threw them in the washer and dryer to see how they held up after a cycle.
Each cooling pillow was evaluated for quality, comfort, airflow, durability, and value. For those that didn’t quite make the cut but still had some positive qualities, we outlined why in our Others We Tried section.
Frequently Asked Questions
In addition to a cooling pillow, using cooling bed sheets or a breathable comforter can work to improve temperature regulation, as does lowering the thermostat at night or keeping a cooling fan at your bedside to circulate air. If you still run hot at night, putting your pillow in a silk pillowcase can help diffuse heat, too.
In a word, yes. During testing, we found comfortable pillows that helped testers stay cooler throughout the night, allowing them to sleep more comfortably. We also found that some cooling pillows perform better than others. All the pillows that made our list exhibited cooling properties during testing.
Gel memory foam and latex were the best performers during our tests. Additionally, an outer layer made from breathable materials helps to provide an extra boost to achieve that cool-to-the-touch feeling. If you’re looking for cooling pillowcases for an extra boost, anything made from bamboo, cotton, or silk is also a safe bet.

Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress: Indulgent Comfort And Support
- Share to Facebook

If you’ve ever stayed at the Ritz Carlton or another high-end hotel and wondered who makes such a comfortable and indulgent mattress, the answer is likely Stearns & Foster. The luxury mattress brand employs master craftsmen who hand stitch their mattresses and sign the label once they’re complete. Stearns & Foster currently offers five mattress collections, and I tested a model that falls smack dab in the middle of the lineup—the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress . It’s available with or without a pillow top in multiple firmness levels, and the model I reviewed is a medium pillow top.
I slept on the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress for 30 nights, taking note of its support, ... [+] motion isolation, cooling capabilities and more.
To fully experience the bed's performance, I slept on the Lux Estate in my home for 30 nights with my spouse. I’m 5 foot 3 and 130 pounds, while my husband is 6 foot 3 and 180 pounds, and we generally have differing sleep needs. However, we shared a similar experience on the Lux Estate, which somehow managed to tick all the boxes for us both. In this Stearns & Foster Luxe Estate Mattress review, I share the kinds of sleepers it best supports and whether I think it’s worth the higher price tag.

- Couples searching for superior motion isolation

The 8 Best Hotels In Nantucket
The best hotel scents let you take home a hint of luxury, stearns & foster lux estate construction, firmness and feel, an innovative hybrid mattress with hand-layered luxury.
While every Stearns & Foster mattress in the Lux Estate Collection has a similar construction, buyers have several customization options to truly make it their own. Without the pillow top, the mattress has five layers and a classic medium feel. However, you can add a pillow top in soft, medium or firm, which also adds to the overall height. The base Lux Estate mattress is 14.5 inches tall, while the medium pillow top (the model I tested) measures 16 inches.
- Cover : The cover combines silky, stretch-knit Tencel with cooling fibers that wick away moisture.
- Comfort layer: For both plushness and support, this layer contains Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam from Tempur-Pedic. The pillow top model includes additional layers of foam for enhanced pressure relief and contouring.
- Support layer: The support layer is designed with the brand’s proprietary IntelliCoil innerspring system, which adapts to accommodate and support different sleepers and sleep positions.
- Edge support: Surrounding the support coils is a high-density border of innerspring coils that prevents the mattress from sagging, even when sitting or sleeping on the edge.
- AirVent system: The mattress perimeter features a system of ventilated coils and external vents to increase airflow and channel warm air out of the mattress.
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress is comprised of five layers, including a layer of ... [+] Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam from Tempur-Pedic.
The brand rates the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress with a medium pillow top as a 5 on its firmness scale out of 10. When I first sat on it, I thought it landed closer to a 6.5 or a medium-firm, as it didn’t sink in very much and didn’t have the cloud-like feel I initially expected from such a thick pillow top. Despite the memory foam layers in the mattress, it has a more traditional feel, without the telltale sink-in feeling that memory foam typically offers.
After the very first night of sleeping on it, my take on the firmness shifted to a 6 on the firmness scale. It has just the right amount of plushness and pressure relief, and it’s neither too soft nor too firm. And surprisingly, despite our size difference, my husband agrees with that assessment.
Since I’m a foot shorter than my husband and 50 pounds lighter, we often have varying experiences when we test mattresses. He generally perceives mattresses to feel softer than I do. With the Lux Estate model, neither of us felt like we slept in or on the mattress—it supported us both in all the right places and cushioned us exactly where we needed it. In fact, just days into testing, we started wondering if we had stumbled onto the Goldilocks of mattresses.
Up until sleeping on this mattress, I would have described myself as a combination stomach/side sleeper who spends slightly more time on my side. Sleeping on my stomach, however, was usually the result of being uncomfortable on my side and knowing I could fall asleep on my stomach as a last resort. In the last month, I don’t think I’ve slept on my stomach once. I also haven’t woken up with any shoulder or hip pain.
Because of its superior pressure relief, support and cushioning, I would recommend this bed for every type of sleeper, especially since it can be customized with a softer or firmer pillow top. Heavier stomach sleepers may do best on the firm model, while lighter side sleepers might prefer the soft pillow top.
Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Features
Exceptional pressure relief and support with no break-in period.
I’ve personally tried and reviewed quite a few mattresses, including the Leesa Original Hybrid and DreamCloud Hybrid . Each mattress I tested had a break-in period during which I felt a few aches as my body adjusted to the new bed—until now. The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress is the only mattress I’ve tested that had no break-in period. From the very first night, it delivered the kind of pressure relief and support that both my husband and I needed to wake up feeling rested and pain free, and that continued throughout the 30-day testing window.
Unlike other mattresses I've tested, the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate required no break-in period.
Pressure Relief
The Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam is the key to pressure relief in this hybrid mattress, especially in the pillow top model, which adds another layer of foam. This high-quality memory foam relieves pressure by contouring to the curves of your body and distributing your weight. That reduces pressure on sharp points, like the hips or shoulders, and minimizes stress on the joints and muscles while promoting a neutral spine. Since side sleeping is my favorite position, pressure relief is a critical mattress feature for me. I felt no pressure buildup on my shoulders, hips or back when laying on my side and woke up every morning without any aches. It’s also comfortable sleeping on my back and stomach—a testament to the high level of adaptive support in the Lux Estate. My husband, a back and side sleeper, likewise reported no aches or pains.
The Tempur-Indulge Memory Foam provides exceptional pressure relief for all sleep styles.
I am definitely part of the majority of people who love slipping into a cool bed and prefer sleeping in a room that’s slightly cool. But I wouldn’t say I sleep extraordinarily hot. On the other hand, my husband frequently sweats at night and can never seem to get cool enough, making him the perfect person to test the cooling features. Over the last month, he hasn’t woken up sweaty once, which is quite an accomplishment. When you put your hand on the mattress, it feels physically cool to the touch, even through the sheets. That feeling is due to the cooling cover and upgraded ventilation features included in the Lux Estate model.
Motion Transfer
With its proprietary innerspring system and layers of memory foam, this mattress has excellent motion isolation. My spouse and I have different work schedules and rarely get in or out of bed at the same time, but neither of us ever felt the other move. The limited motion transfer is ideal for couples or anyone who shares the bed with a child or pet.
Overall, the support is excellent. There is no dipping in the middle of the bed and I felt completely secure when sleeping around the perimeter. The edge support is likewise good while sitting on the side of the bed. The minimal amount of sinkage I felt can be attributed to the pillow top, but it wasn’t significant enough that I felt like I was going to fall off or couldn’t sit comfortably. Neither my husband nor I fall into the heavyweight sleeper category, but this mattress seems capable of properly supporting sleepers of all sizes.
Sleeping or sitting on the edge of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate feels secure.
Ease Of Movement
This Lux Estate model has a traditional feel, unlike that of a memory foam mattress , which can make you feel like you’re stuck in the mattress. It’s quite easy to move around on the mattress or switch from one position to another. While it has a slight bounce, I wouldn’t classify it as a bouncy mattress—there’s just enough spring to help you move.
Other Details Worth Noting
With the pillow top, this mattress is 16 inches tall, making it one of the thickest mattresses I’ve tested and one of the thickest models you can buy. While my sheets fit (barely), they came off every few nights, a sign that I probably need to buy new deep-pocket sheets . The generous height may also change the way the mattress sits against your headboard, so it’s worth measuring your setup.
About The Company
Stearns & Foster was founded in 1846 in Cincinnati by a businessman and a purveyor of cotton goods. The company began producing cotton-based goods and upholstery for horse carriages and quickly began manufacturing mattresses for high-end hotels. They merged with sleep company Sealy in 1993 and have continued to grow in the decades since. Stearns & Foster mattresses and sleep products are available for purchase online and at qualified retailers. All of the company’s mattresses are designed and manufactured in the U.S.
Shipping And Delivery
Stearns & Foster offers free shipping and complimentary white glove delivery on select mattresses to most of the U.S. (There is a $600 surcharge per order for shipping to Alaska, Hawaii and remote locations.) Delivery can be scheduled on a day that works for you, and a shipping specialist is on hand to set up your new mattress, discard all packaging materials and even remove your old mattress and box spring if necessary.
Trial Period And Returns
Your mattress comes with a 90-trial period, and Stearns & Foster asks that you try it for a minimum of 30 days to allow it time to adjust and soften. If you do wish to return or exchange it, a $175 shipping fee applies.
The Stearns & Foster mattress warranty is an industry standard 10 years and covers manufacturer’s defects. If you have an issue relating to workmanship or defective materials, you can fill out a claim to have it repaired or replaced at no charge.
Other Mattresses From Stearns & Foster
Stearns & Foster offers five different collections of mattresses, with the majority of them offered in different firmness levels (soft, medium or firm) and construction styles (pillow top or standard). Learn more about a few below.
Stearns & Foster Studio Mattress (Queen)
To get a feel for the brand’s quality and materials without the high price tag, you can opt for The Stearns & Foster Studio Mattress. It has a medium feel and is also available with or without a pillow top. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and customers report that it’s superior quality and very comfortable.
Stearns & Foster Reserve Collection Mattress (Queen)
Those who want a more indulgent feel may prefer the Stearns & Foster Reserve Mattress. This is the brand’s most luxurious collection. The Reserve Mattress is designed with the finest materials and is hand-tufted by a master craftsman. It’s available in a medium firmness, with soft or firm pillow top upgrades.
Final Thoughts
As a hybrid mattress, the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress has a more traditional feel, making it better suited for those who aren’t fans of the traditional sunken sensation of memory foam. The excellent motion isolation is a boon for couples or anyone who has a bed partner. Plus, it offers a level of support and pressure relief that caters to multiple body types and sleeping positions, making it a great fit for all kinds of people.
With a choice of firmness, the mattress is ideal for side, stomach or back sleepers, and it has just just enough bounce for comfortable movement, which is helpful for combination sleepers . This mattress might also be beneficial for those with orthopedic issues or injuries, thanks to its excellent pressure relief. To play it safe, however, that’s a topic worth discussing with your doctor. Lastly, but maybe most importantly for those who sleep hot, this mattress is one of the coolest I’ve tested and is definitely a must-try for anyone searching for cooler nights. Overall, I think it’s worth the luxury price tag for people wanting a high-end , quality mattress that delivers on cooling, comfort and support.
How I Tested The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress
After scheduling the delivery, the Stearns And Foster Lux Estate Mattress arrived at my home and shipping specialists set it up in my bedroom. I then slept on it for 30 nights during the summer, making a note each morning of any aches, whether I felt hot or cold and if I tossed and turned. I also asked my husband to do the same. Because we have different sleep styles (I’m a combination sleeper who tends to end up on my stomach, and my husband sleeps mainly on his back and side) and body types, we were able to access the mattress from a few different vantage points.

How Long Does A Stearns & Foster Mattress Last?
How long does a stearns & foster mattress last.
Stearns & Foster mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty, and given the materials and construction, it’s reasonable to expect them to last around a decade. The average life of a mattress is about seven years.
Can I Flip The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress?
Can i flip the stearns & foster lux estate mattress.
Due to the construction of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress, including the pillow top, it’s not designed to be flipped. Flipping the mattress puts the support layers on the top and the comfort layers and pillow top on the bottom, which isn’t advised.

Base & foundation faqs, will you assemble my mattress/foundation/power base when it's delivered.
Yes. Our in-home delivery service will unpack your new bed and place it in your bedroom. They will either set up the mattress and foundation on the bed frame, or set up the mattress on the power base if you ordered one. They remove the packing materials, and can even remove your old mattress and box spring if requested.
Will you remove my old mattress and box spring?
For select mattresses, yes — this included with our White Glove Delivery service. Simply indicate that you have an old mattress and box spring you'd like removed when we contact you to set up delivery.
Please note that the TEMPUR-Cloud® mattress is designed to be delivered to your door via UPS and does not come with White Glove Delivery or mattress removal services.
What is a foundation?
Our foundations look similar to a standard box spring. But instead of the “give“ of a box spring, our foundations provide a solid base for our mattresses. Because they’re completely flat, they allow the mattress to provide the support your body needs; because they’re solidly built, they’ll support the mattress without sagging and last for the life of the mattress.
Do I have to purchase your foundation?
We encourage you to buy a foundation when you buy your mattress; it provides the solid base your mattress requires to do its job properly. If you choose not to purchase our foundation, you must position the mattress on a completely flat, solid surface with adequate center support. Do not use the mattress with a conventional box spring. Please note that using the mattress without a Tempur-Pedic foundation or similar firm, solid-surface, non-spring base may void the warranty.
Can I put your mattress on my existing box spring?
No, you should not place the mattress on a box spring. Box springs are designed to “give“ in supporting a traditional mattress, while Tempur-Pedic® mattresses require a solid base.
I have a platform bed. Do I have to buy your foundation?
If your platform bed has a solid surface and strong center support that can properly support the mattress, you can use it instead of a foundation. However, if the platform bed uses slats to support the mattress, you may be using an improper foundation that will void your warranty.
How much weight will your foundation hold?
Foundations support up to 400 pounds for smaller and split sizes and up to 800 pounds for Queen sizes and larger.
What is the weight limit of your power base?
Our power bases support up to 650 lbs. each (Twin, Twin Long, Double, Queen, and Split/Dual CA King bases).
All power bases will structurally support the recommended weight distributed evenly across the head and foot sections. Power base products are not designed to support or lift this amount of weight in the head or foot sections alone.
Will your power base fit inside my existing bed frame?
We have found that the power bases fit inside most modern bed frames. However, they may not fit inside antique bed frames or other non-standard frames. We recommend you measure the inside of the bed frame and compare to the measurements below to be sure the power base will fit.
Does your power base come with headboard or footboard attachments?
Unfortunately, they do not. However those can be purchased separately here .
