England sense an opportunity vs New Zealand as Ireland, Wales face difficult tasks vs South Africa, Australia live on Sky Sports

England sniff huge chance to beat All Blacks on New Zealand soil; Ireland up against it after bruising opening Test vs Springboks; pressure ramping up on Warren Gatland as win-shy Wales look underpowered;  watch southern hemisphere summer tour action live on Sky Sports

Steve Borthwick's England sense an opportunity ahead of their second Test vs the All Blacks, while Ireland and Wales face difficult tasks in their series vs South Africa and Australia respectively, all live on Sky Sports ....

England sniff huge chance to beat All Blacks on New Zealand soil

Into the final quarter of last week's New Zealand vs England Test in Dunedin, Borthwick's charges were winning and a massive opportunity to win on Kiwi soil for the first time since 2003 stared them in the face.

They lost by a point and there can be no denying it was a huge chance lost. Yet, once the frustration subsided, England will know they are more than in the mix, and the All Blacks are the ones under enormous pressure from their media and public ahead of the second and final Test at Eden Park.

Before last autumn's Rugby World Cup in France, and even during it, England under Borthwick would likely have been dispatched with ease by New Zealand. But this is not that All Blacks side, and England are playing differently now too.

New Zealand are also under a new head coach in Scott Robertson, who is sure to be still finding his way in the Test rugby landscape.

Scott Robertson after New Zealand's win over England in the first Test

Meanwhile, a poor start under Borthwick which saw England finish fourth in the 2023 Six Nations after three defeats, and lose 2023 Rugby World Cup warm-up Tests to Wales and Fiji, has given way to a far more positive outlook following the 2024 Six Nations.

Denying Andy Farrell's Ireland the chance of successive Grand Slams felt like a turning point for Borthwick's team, dominating the game against a first-class opponent, and looking to play rugby on the front foot as opposed to employing negative tactics.

In the backs, Cardiff-born Immanuel Feyi-Waboso appears a game-changer, while Northampton trio Alex Mitchell, George Furbank and Tommy Freeman are growing in influence. Inside-centre Ollie Lawrence has the potential to be one of the best in his position in the world.

Chandler Cunningham-South is a player of immense potential in the forwards, while George Martin looks like a mainstay of the England pack for years to come. The likes of Maro Itoje and Sam Underhill are returning to close to their form of 2019 too.

Seven of the last 18 England vs New Zealand match-ups have taken place in New Zealand for seven All Black victories. This is England's greatest chance.

Ireland up against it after bruising opening Test vs South Africa

Ireland were already shorn of four key players heading to the belly of the beast to face the World Cup-winning Springboks, with full-back Hugo Keenan, scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park, wing Mack Hansen and No 8 Jack Conan out, and the Irish outlook has only gotten more pessimistic since their frustrating opening Test defeat in Pretoria.

South Africa vs Ireland highlights

Hooker Dan Sheehan (knee ACL) and starting scrum-half Craig Casey (concussion) have been ruled out of the second and final Test with serious injuries, with the men in green firmly up against it to gain victory. After a ferociously physical opening Test, there are sure to be more players struggling at the very tail end of an extremely long season too.

Having done well to remain in the first Test, Ireland were then stung by two controversial TMO calls which blew the game wide open.

Welsh TMO Ben Whitehouse ruled out a James Lowe try for Ireland due to a subjective breakdown call, and then fed back there was 'inconclusive evidence' to rule out a Cheslin Kolbe South Africa try, which ensured a two-score Boks lead.

Lowe's try would have levelled the contest at 13-13, and handed fly-half Jack Crowley a conversion for the lead, while Kolbe's effort moments later came as a result of Lowe keeping a Handre Pollard penalty kick to touch in-field - though replays suggested he was in touch while playing the ball.

Dan Sheehan of Ireland receives medical treatment during the first Test between South Africa and Ireland

For both decisions to go against them in an eventual seven-point loss, Ireland will no doubt be incredibly frustrated, potentially even angry. It just seems a case they lack the energy and resources to turn things around in the space of a week.

"It's not for me to say but I saw quite a few of them live and had a dubious thought about it but anyway, that's life," head coach Andy Farrell has admitted since.

"We will go through the right channels and make sure we do things properly as far as those things are concerned. You'll make of it what you want. Unlucky, lucky, that's the game as well.

Andy Farrell

"You'll make your own decision on whether he [Lowe] still had the ball in his right hand or whether the ball hit him as he threw it back into the field and his foot was in touch.

"That's for us all to debate. It is what it is, that is the sport, it's difficult to referee. You just want consistency, that's all."

Pressure ramping up on Gatland as win-shy Wales look underpowered

It is remarkable really the depth to which Wales and their performances have fallen.

They have moved from an ageing team that was once a challenge for everyone and regularly successful, to a vastly-inexperienced one which cannot seem to buy a victory at present.

Indeed, Warren Gatland's Wales are on a run of seven straight losses. And it is the manner of them that is most worrying.

Australia 25-16 Wales

This current run started during October's World Cup in France, where Wales - blessed to be on a far softer side of the draw - came up against and lost to an Argentina side who would go on to lose their subsequent World Cup semi-final vs New Zealand 44-6.

The 2024 Six Nations then saw Wales lose all five fixtures, including to Italy in Cardiff for the second time running, picking up the wooden spoon for the first time since 2003.

Last week, facing the weakest of the southern hemisphere's big three in Australia, and a Wallabies group new head coach Joe Schmidt had only had together for five days, Wales never looked like winning in a 25-16 loss.

Wales, Australia

Gatland may have guided Wales to three Six Nations Grand Slams and two World Cup semi-finals in his first spell in charge, but he is a man under big pressure. There are growing calls for change.

"We've just got to keep working hard. That's [11th in the world ranking] just where we are at the moment," Gatland said this week.

"We know we're going through a process playing at the highest level, which is about learning to handle some pressure.

Warren Gatland

"It's just staying in the arm wrestle. That takes a little bit of time in terms of on-the-field stuff. I have been through that with other teams in the past. Once you get across the line, players in the team learn that understanding and turn those games that are close into Ws [wins]. That's what we've got to work through at the moment."

ICC T20 World Cup 2024: India’s redemption tour, Underrated Axar & South Africa’s first final The Top Order Cricket Podcast

In this episode of the show, Binksy and Stu look back at the two semi finals at the Men's T20 World Cup with one eye on the final, which will see India take on South Africa. We start the show by discussing India's win against England, which was set up by an excellent partnership from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, then finished off by India's brilliant bowlers. We talk about setting the tone at the top, underrated Axar Patel, more Jasprit Bumrah magic and who from England might be saying farewell. Next we move to South Africa's dominant win against Afghanistan, which takes them to their first-ever final. Marco Jansen gets a shout out, as well as Afghanistan's tournament as a whole, before the conversation focuses on whether the pitch was up to standard for such a crucial game and what the Proteas can take from such a one-sided fixture. To finish, we look ahead to the final in Bridgetown. Will Rahul Dravid go out on a high thanks to a Virat Kohli special? Or will South Africa's well-balanced bowling lineup and powerful middle order see them lift the trophy for the very first time? Emotional Anderson bows out as England wrap up innings win over West Indies

Bowler walked out to a guard of honour and standing ovation from lord’s crowd in his 188th and final test.

england cricket south africa tour

England’s James Anderson brought down the curtain on his stellar international career by taking a wicket against West Indies on the third day of the first Test at Lord’s on Friday as he helped his side wrap up a comfortable win by an innings and 114 runs.

Anderson looked uncharacteristically emotional before the start of play as he walked out to a guard of honour and a standing ovation from the crowd in his 188th and final Test.

But the seamer quickly got to work and had Joshua Da Silva (9) caught behind in his second over of the day, finding just enough movement to draw the outside edge and pick up his 704th Test wicket to finish with match figures of four for 58.

The 41-year-old retires with a record number of Test wickets by an England bowler and the most by any seam bowler. He is third on the all-time list for Test wickets behind spin bowlers Australian Shane Warne (708) and Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800).

Anderson, clutching a pint of Guinness in the dressingroom, told Sky Sports he was still trying to hold back tears at the end of his final match.

“This morning was quite emotional with the two teams lined up and the reaction from the crowd was pretty special,” he said.

“Playing for England is the best job in the world. I’ve been privileged to do it for a long time.”

Anderson's fourth wicket of the match dented West Indies' slim chances of making England bat again, but it was debutant Gus Atkinson who did the damage with a man of the match performance.

Alzarri Joseph (8) decided to go down swinging, clubbing Atkinson back over his head for four amid some wild swipes before he top-edged Atkinson to Ben Duckett on the leg-side boundary, taking Atkinson to 10 wickets on his Test debut.

Shamar Joseph (3) was not far behind, clean bowled by Atkinson as the tailender missed a straight yorker with an ugly hack across the line.

Gudakesh Motie (31 not out) put up some resistance and was involved in two of the highlights of the day, first driving Atkinson to the cover boundary to draw a long chase and full-length dive from Anderson to save a single run.

Motie then seemingly handed Anderson his 705th Test wicket on a plate, driving the ball straight back to the bowler but he spilled it.

Anderson did not get a better chance for a final wicket and Atkinson – who finished with a match total of 12 for 106 – wrapped things up when Jayden Seales (8) holed out to Duckett as West Indies were all out for 136 inside barely seven sessions.

The two sides meet again in the second Test of the three-match series starting at Trent Bridge next Thursday.

‘Winning this game, is not about what we did today’

Victorious India captain Rohit summed up his thoughts at the post-match presentation: “Very hard to sum up what we have been through the last three/four years.

“We worked really hard as individuals and as a team. Winning this game, is not about what we did today, but what we have done the last three to four years. We played a lot of high pressure games and have been on the wrong side of them. Guys understand that when the pressure is on, what needs to be done. Today was a perfect example.

“Even though, at one point, it was looking South Africa’s way, but overall, we wanted this really bad. To win a tournament like this, a lot goes on behind the scenes. I am very proud of the boys and management for giving us that liberty to go out and play and execute, and have that trust in each one of us. Throughout the tournament, I think we were fantastic.

“Nobody was in doubt about Kohli’s form. We know the quality he has. He has been on top of his game for the last 15 years. Come the occasion, we know the big players will stand up. Kohli was holding up that one end which was very crucial for us. Getting to that total was a team effort. This was not a wicket where you could bat freely and keep the scoreboard ticking.

“We wanted someone to bat as long as possible, and that is what Virat did. Axar’s 47 was very crucial as well. I’ve been someone who has seen him [Bumrah] for so many years, playing alongside me. I know what he brings to the table, but what he does is just a masterclass. He backs his skills and he is a very confident lad. Whatever he wants to do he executes to perfection. He is a class act. Pandya was brilliant as well. To bowl that last over with nerves, I am very proud of the boys.”

Indian players collect their medals

Led in the front by Bumrah, as has been the case throughout the tournament, the players eagerly await their winner’s medals at the podium.

‘Gutted to not make it over the line’

Losing South African skipper Markram shared his thoughts at the post-match presentation “Yeah, obviously gutted. It will take some time for us to reflect on this campaign.

“It hurts quite a bit, but having said that I am still incredibly proud of this team.

“I thought they bowled well, I don’t think there was a lot to work with the pitch. We thought we restricted them to a chaseable total.

“I thought we batted well and it came down to the wire. Gutted to not make it over the line.

“We have seen in a lot of the games that it isn’t over till the final ball is bowled.

“There was an element of scoreboard pressure, but having said that we got into a great position and proved we were worthy finalists, and could have won this game.

“One thing that is guaranteed about South Africans is that they are really respectful and competitive. They won’t go down without a fight.

“Hopefully, we can draw a lot of things from this tournament going forward.”

South African players receive runners-up medals

We are into the post-match presentation.

The South African players lineup to collect their medals, with Markram due to speak shortly about the match result.

‘We play the sport for these big stages. There is no better feeling’

Bumrah, who turned the game around his spell of 2 of 18 towards the end, has been named Player of the Tournament: “Usually, I try to keep my emotions in check, but today I don’t have a lot of words. The emotion are taking over.

“At the midway stage, we thought we were in trouble, but we managed to pull it off.

“I am just over the moon. My son is here, my family is here.

“We just fell short last time [in the 2023 ODI World Cup], but this time we were able to go through

“We play the sport for these big stages. There is no better feeling.

“It just felt good. I was trying to keep myself in the bubble.

“Spent time with the family and tried not to look too far ahead.

“Over the tournament, I felt very clear and calm.

“I take it one over at a time. If I think too early I can give into the pressure.”

‘It was now or never – this is my last T20 game for India’

Kohli, who finally came to the party with the bat at the most important stage, was duly awarded Player of the Match for his 76 off 59: “This is my last T20 World Cup, and this is exactly what I wanted to achieve.

“One day you feel like you can’t get a run, then you come out and things happen for you. I am really grateful to get the job done for the team on the day it mattered the most.

“It was now or never. This is my last T20 game for India, so I wanted to make the most of it. This was our aim, to win an ICC tournament.

“It was the occasion which helped me to put my head down and respect the situation. I wanted to play the innings the team needed me.

“This was an open secret, that this was going to be my last T20 WC to play for India.

“It is time for the next generation to take over. They will take the team forward in this format. They will do wonders and keep the flag waving high.

“It’s been a long wait for us, and its not just me alone. You can look at Rohit who has played nine T20 World Cups, and this is my sixth. He deserves it as much as anyone in the squad.

“It is hard to explain the emotions I felt after the game.

“I wasn’t feeling confident after the last few games, but God shows you in ways that you cant imagine.

“The kind of character the guys showed was incredible. It is an amazing day and I couldn’t be more thankful.”

‘I felt like I had to do something good for India and finally I did it’

Axar, who starred with the bat after scoring 47 off 31, had this to say, “It means everything to me. When I came to this World Cup, last few years I had been injured and not performed.

“This time I felt like I had to do something good for India and finally I did it.

“I was trying to keep it simple and not think of anything. I didn’t think it was a final. I didn’t think ahead of what i was doing when I was batting.

“Rohit is an amazing man, and he led India very well in this World Cup.

“Rahul bhai [Dravid] told me to pad up after being down three wickets.

“I didn’t get a chance to think about my batting which worked for me.”

‘Today was the day we fulfilled what the whole nation wanted’

Pandya, who bowled the final over, shared his thoughts: “It means a lot. It is very emotional. We worked very hard but something was not clicking.

“Today was the day we fulfilled what the whole nation wanted.

“I believed if I kept working hard then there will be a time I can shine and do what I have always wanted to do.

“It was a dream to win and especially getting an opportunity like this makes it even more special.

“We always believed we could do it. It was just about how we executed our plans and let the pressure come to them.

“Credit to Jassi [Bumrah] and the fast bowlers in how they bowled those last five overs. It changed everything.

“I knew that if I wasn’t calm it wasn’t going to help me. I made sure every ball I bowled, I committed 100 percent.

“I am very happy for him [Rahul Dravid]. To give him a farewell like this is just wonderful.”

‘He is a game changer’

Siraj, who wasn’t in the XI for the final, had this to say post-match: “I only believe in Jassi bhai [Jasprit Bumrah]. He is a game changer.

“It is an unbelievable feeling. I can’t describe the feeling.

“Every professional cricketer wants to play in the World Cup final. I am lucky.”

Pandya and Rohit on the ground

As that final ball was bowled, several Indian players fell to the ground in disbelief.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were on the grass trying to process the events that had transpired in the last 30 minutes or so.

Joy and despair

There’s so much emotion on display here. Tears of joy and those of despair.

India’s last-over hero Pandya is sobbing as he walks off the field. And the camera turns to Miller on the sidelines, who can’t bear to look and hides his face with his arm.
