Cruising out of La Crosse, WI, the boat is one of the few authentic Mississippi River paddlewheel river boats still in operation in the United States. In keeping with early traditions, the boat was built with split sternwheels that are the only means of propulsion, and each is run by a twin diesel engine that powers hydraulic motors which turn the paddles. U.S. Coast Guard inspected for safety and is licensed to carry up to 149 passengers.

The La Crosse Queen is a modern-day replica of the grand river boats that plied the Mississippi River in the early 1900s. Cruising out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, she is one of the few authentic Mississippi River paddlewheel river boats still in operation in the United States today. In keeping with early traditions, she was built with sternwheels that are her only means of propulsion.

More than 25,000 acres of open water awaits you on Lake Pepin. This natural lake was formed by a natural sandbar created where the Chippewa River spills into the Mississippi. The result is one of the best places on earth for sailing and boating. Waterskiing was invented on this big body of water. Numerous marinas and boat launches can be found along its shores.

Lake Onalaska

At 7,700 acres, Lake Onalaska offers boaters lots of room to explore. The lake is famous not only as a boating and paddling destination – it’s also known as the “Sunfish Capital of the World.” Backwater areas and quiet sloughs are perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

Lake Winneshiek

This wild and undeveloped stretch near Lynxville and Ferryville offers thousands of acres of open water just waiting to be explored with a canoe or kayak. At the northern and southern ends of the pool, the river splits into numerous channels. The charming river town of Cassville is home to one of the few operating car ferries on the Upper Mississippi River. The first ferry operating out of Cassville dates back to 1833, making the Cassville ferry the oldest operating ferry service in Wisconsin. Kids will love the trip across the Mississippi River to Turkey River in Iowa.

The ferry runs seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day. During May, September and October, it runs from Friday to Sunday only.

1 Memphis, TN Embark your ship and settle into your stateroom. Situated on the Chickasaw bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Memphis is revered for its blues music and barbecue. Some of the most famed names in blues, including B.B. King, got their start in Memphis, and the city has a well-deserved reputation as the home of this classic American music genre. Memphis is also celebrated for its culinary heritage and is renowned for its traditional barbecue restaurants serving flavorful dry rub ribs. Rich in history and culture, Memphis’s many notable museums include the National Civil Rights Museum and Elvis Presley’s Graceland.

2 Scenic Sailing: Mississippi River The rich and varied landscape along the Mississippi River is characterized by wide floodplains, rocky outcroppings and sandy beaches nestled between fertile farmland and bustling bankside cities. Indigenous peoples used the river for thousands of years before Europeans began exploring the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. It became an important trade route during the 19th century, with the rise of steamboats and river commerce. Today, the river is an important ecological region, with diverse wildlife and habitats, including wetlands and forests.

3 Paducah, KY Located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio rivers, Paducah is one of Kentucky’s hidden gems. A UNESCO Creative City, Paducah is famed for its preserved 19th-century architecture and historic buildings that line the main street. The city’s Downtown streets are a delight to explore on foot. The National Quilt Museum houses a superb collection of contemporary style quilts by artists from around the globe. Paducah is also famed for its “Wall to Wall” murals, colorful paintings by different artists that document the heritage and history of the city and the region.

4 Cape Girardeau, MO The largest city between St. Louis and Memphis, Cape Girardeau has a long and storied history. It was an important site during the Civil War and once housed a number of forts, including Fort D, which remains a well-preserved historic site to this day. Fondly referred to as “The Cape” by locals, this riverside destination is also popular with visitors who come to enjoy nature. The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is a stunning facility with verdant landscapes and picturesque trails to explore, as well as an abundance of flora and fauna.

5 St. Louis, MO During the 19th century, St. Louis was a gateway into the Louisiana Territory. In 1904, the city gained recognition as host of a world’s fair (officially called the Louisiana Purchase Exposition), whereby some accounts the ice-cream cone was introduced. Today, it is home to rich architectural treasures—among them, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, with its 41-million-piece mosaic; the Renaissance Revival City Hall; the 19th-century Old Courthouse; and the Gateway Arch, standing along the Mississippi as a monument to westward expansion.

6 Alton, IL Alton lies along The Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Route, where the Mississippi and the Illinois Rivers converge. The road to this historic town is considered one of America’s most picturesque drives, with its limestone river bluffs, flowering trees and whistling birds. Along the bluffs is a mural of the Piasa Bird, a dragon-like creature of Native American mythology, with the horns of a deer and a face like a man. First discovered during the 17th century, it had worn away due to the elements. It has since been restored and is today a celebrated landmark.

7 Hannibal, MO Hannibal is the childhood home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, or Mark Twain, and the inspiration for his beloved stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Prior to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and arrival of European settlers, a variety of indigenous Native American tribes called the area home. Hannibal grew into the primary port for steamboats and flatboats traveling the Upper Mississippi. “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” the early 20th-century socialite, philanthropist and survivor of the Titanic tragedy, was also born here.

8 Burlington, IA The US flag was first raised over Iowa in Burlington—in 1805—by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike during his Mississippi explorations. Later, it became an outpost for the American Fur Company, a trading enterprise founded by John Jacob Astor. In 1834, it took its present name after the Vermont birthplace of its first settler, John Gray. During the steamboat era, it was a major port along the river. Today, the city is home to many magnificent buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the art deco Capitol Theater and the Gothic Revival St. Paul’s Church.

9 Quad Cities, IA Straddling the confluence of the Mississippi and Rock Rivers, the Quad Cities area comprises Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, Illinois. As the only section of the Mississippi that flows from east to west, it is geographically unique. Its tightly knit riverside towns thrived due to thoughtful planning and effective leadership. Today, the Quad Cities rest amid the fertile farmland known as “America’s Breadbasket”—the nation’s most expansive and scenic agricultural region—and is home to agribusiness giants including John Deere.

10 Dubuque, IA One of Iowa’s few cities laid out among rolling bluffs, Dubuque is called the “Masterpiece on the Mississippi” for its 19th-century ingenuity and modern-day cultural evolution. Timber and boatbuilding were central to the city’s growth, with wood harvested in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The spirit of this river town lives on in the Cathedral Historic District, dotted with well-preserved buildings and authentic period lampposts. Today, the city is praised for its livability and for its riverside developments, including a museum and aquarium dedicated to the Mississippi River.

11 La Crosse, WI La Crosse has a deep connection to the towering bluffs and rolling farmland of the Norskedalen, or “Norwegian Valley.” Here, a Norwegian immigrant population has created a unique culture over generations. Historic immigrant villages dot the valley still, a collection of preserved homesteads reflecting a frontier way of life. Today, La Crosse boasts numerous sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Its important architectural landmarks, along with an array of engaging statues along the riverfront, make La Crosse feel like a vast open air museum.

12 La Crosse, WI Norwegian immigrants who settled in La Crosse during the late 19th and early 20th centuries have had a major influence on the city’s cuisine. Their traditional dishes, such as lefse, lutefisk and krumkake, are still enjoyed today, with many local restaurants offering Norwegian-inspired menu items. Norwegians also introduced dairy farming to the region, leading to the production of cheese, butter and other dairy products; Wisconsin is known for its cheese curds, bite-sized pieces of fresh cheddar that have a mild flavor and unique texture.

13 Red Wing, MN Red Wing is known for its Red Wing Shoes, which produced footwear for soldiers in both world wars. The city was named after a Sioux chief whose red-dyed swan wing indicated his rank. The first settlers—many from New England—arrived in the mid-1800s. German, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants followed, bringing skills in tanning, shoemaking, pottery and more. The city boasts a diversity of legacies including Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery, founded in 1877 as the nation’s first commercial potter. Today, Red Wing enjoys a place in the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

14 St. Paul, MN Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, St. Paul welcomed its first settler in 1838. And little more than a decade later, the thriving settlement was named the capital of the Minnesota Territory. By 1858, some 1,000 steamboats frequented this “Last City of the East” on the frontier. Today, St. Paul is a modern metropolis and the capital of Minnesota. The city’s historic residential districts invite long strolls, particularly around Irvine Park near the Mississippi, where late 19th- and early 20th-century mansions grace tree-lined streets.

15 St. Paul, MN St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and one of the state’s oldest cities. Situated on a series of bluffs overlooking a deep S-shaped bend in the Mississippi River, it forms the “Twin Cities” with neighboring Minneapolis. The city has long been an important commercial center, first for furs during the early 19th century, then later for livestock and meatpacking after the development of the railroad. St. Paul boasts several historic neighborhoods and is home to Summit Avenue, the longest preserved street of Victorian-era buildings in the US. After breakfast, disembark your ship and journey home.

Expectations: Expect a moderate amount of walking. There will be time to rest on the coach and between attractions. To enjoy this tour, you should be prepared to walk slightly longer distances, climb stairs and tolerate periods of standing, for example on city walks, sightseeing stops or ship excursions. AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Albuquerque International Sunport. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Albuquerque, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A Driver’s License or Passport is preferred. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

We took weekend trips to Red Wing and La Crosse on new Amtrak Borealis

We rode the new, on-time Amtrak train service for jaunts to historic Red Wing and fun La Crosse, Wis.

The recent launch of Amtrak’s Borealis, a second train between St. Paul and Chicago, evoked the midcentury golden age of Midwest train travel — when the dueling Hiawatha and Zephyr behemoths barreled down the Mississippi River Valley at top speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

I was excited, yet wary of Amtrak’s 21st-century record of running the existing Empire Builder train more than two hours late. But there was adventure ahead, history to explore and no time to sit on my hands.

It turns out that the new 54-mph Borealis is averaging only a 27-minute delay on its entire trek to Chicago, and 43 minutes on the return. That was all the encouragement I needed to jump into two very entertaining weekend excursions: to Red Wing, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis.

Compelling history in Red Wing

In June, I sampled the new service with a same-day trip from St. Paul’s Union Depot to Red Wing. My round trip cost $18. Weekend parking at Union Depot is a bargain at $4 per day. Borealis was right on time in both directions. The train itself is not new, but the leather seats and Wi-Fi were new to me.

Red Wing is perfect for a Borealis day trip because the town is very walkable, and the daily 11:05 a.m. departure from St. Paul and 12:35 p.m. arrival leaves five hours to explore. There is plenty of compelling history within three blocks of the Red Wing station. Our primary targets were the iconic St. James Hotel and the majestic Sheldon Theatre, institutions enhanced by the legacy of two pioneering women.

The Sheldon was born from an $83,000 trust gifted to the city in 1900 by businessman Theodore B. Sheldon. His widow, Annie, led the project to build a leading-edge entertainment showplace. The Renaissance Revival building was a masterpiece of sculpture, decorative painting and arches that earned its nickname, the Jewel Box.

The theater is brimming with intriguing Masonic symbolism. Annie Sheldon’s love of Roman and Greek gilded hearts, cherubs, peacocks and eagles appears in every nook and cranny of the four-level hall. Grab a self-guided tour booklet to help unlock the mystery. We toured the public areas for free by visiting when the box office is open: 1-5:30 p.m. Wed.-Fri. and 12:30-4 p.m. Sat. Call ahead to ensure there is not a play rehearsal on the day you visit (1-651-388-8700).

In 1875, Red Wing was the wheat-trading capital of the world. Eleven civic-minded businessmen banded together to develop a commensurate luxury hotel. Architect Edward Bassford provided the solution with the four-story Italianate-style St. James. Its Victorian accents, furnishings and decor are wonderfully preserved.

In 1914, Clara Lillyblad began her 62-year reign running the food and lodging side of the business, building the hotel’s reputation for cuisine. The meals were so good that the train layover in Red Wing was increased to an hour to enable passengers to experience the dining.

We enjoyed Scarlet Kitchen and Bar, the second-floor restaurant featuring patio views of the river. Another interesting find was the free Ski Jumping Museum down the hall. After 4 p.m., grab a refreshment at the vintage speakeasy bar, the Port, on the lower level.

It is said that Clara’s spirit and the ghost of a young girl (who drowned in a well) haunt the hotel. I’m glad I didn’t know that when I was wandering the deserted hallways.

From the St. James, it is less than half a block to the Red Wing Shoes flagship store. The store displays hundreds of its well-crafted shoes, but is also a testament to the company’s hundred-year history. There are educational exhibits about shoemaking and a museum on the second floor. Enthusiastic tourists take selfies with the World’s Largest Boot.

Just up the block, don’t bypass the Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop. We refueled with their delish pastries and can testify why they have won awards for best Minnesota bakery.

We returned to the station in time for the westbound Borealis’ 5:40 p.m. return to St. Paul.

Riverside fun in La Crosse

Using the Borealis for an overnight trip to La Crosse had been at the top of my bucket list. There is so much to do, from river views to scenic bluffs, and a plethora of outstanding food and drink establishments.

Unlike Red Wing, the La Crosse Amtrak station does not facilitate an easy walking tour. No matter. I took advantage of the city’s biking network.

For my $54 round trip, Borealis arrived right on time in La Crosse at 2:16 p.m. I caught a short taxi ride to the Radisson Hotel, and from there it was just a few steps to a Drift Cycle bike-sharing kiosk, with 15 locations across the city. When you sign up on the Drift Cycle app, your first 60 minutes are free; the regular rate is only $1 per 30 minutes. For an extended bike rental, the Wrench & Roll bike shop is a 15-minute walk from the Amtrak station and a standard rental is $28 per day or $60 for the weekend (1-608-406-2261).

The city’s Riverside Park is an urban oasis, delivering spectacular views of the tumultuous intersection of the Mississippi, La Crosse and Black Rivers. A steady stream of pleasure craft, barges and steamships splashed against the canvas of the La Crosse Bridge. At times it was impossible to keep pedaling. I just leaned against the closest bench to soak in the moment of zen.

The free, beautiful International Friendship Gardens nearby reveal wedding-photo backdrops at every turn. Wind your way through small waterfalls, fountains, a koi pond and meticulously manicured floral settings. The back side of the park pours into two paved bike trails: the Vietnam Veterans and Jim Asfoor trails. The combined paths create a 2.3-mile oval tracing serene wetlands and the La Crosse River.

Board a cruise on the La Crosse Queen paddewheeler. The line offers reasonably priced 1.5- to 2.5-hour pizza, brunch or dinner cruises featuring surprisingly good food ( lacrossequeen.com ).

The Dahl Auto Museum displays pristine classic cars from many eras. Kids love the exhibits (it’s free for ages 8 and younger) and the admission is only $5 (adults), $4 (seniors) or $3 (kids over 8). From the Dahl, it was an easy 8-minute pedal to the Historic Hixon House Museum , an original 1858 pioneer home ( lchshistory.org ).

Before my 3:58 p.m. train home the next day, I toasted the end of my La Crosse adventure at the Waterfront Restaurant & Tavern in Riverside Park. The patio presents memorable river views and sunsets, enhanced by a killer happy hour ( thewaterfrontlacrosse.com ). The restaurant receives accolades for its filets, salmon and calamari.

I was skeptical of the new Borealis service, but after using it as a reliable conduit to these two great river cities, I’ve become a reborn Amtrak fan. It’s about time.
