Le Tour / Vallorcine / Balme Ski Resort Information Area

Domaine du Balme is probably the best ski area in the valley for beginners and intermediates. At the bottom three drag lifts make up the Vormaine area, ideal for complete novices or children with its green and blue runs.

Off the back-side of Le Tour there is plenty of off-piste - this is arguably the favourite area of boarder's in the Chamonix Valley.

The Le Tour Balme Vallorcine ski area

The main ski area consists of 19 pistes in total - 1 black, 7 reds and 11 blues. A new chairlift on the Vallorcine side of the valley has opened up the ski area enormously, adding an extra 4 or 5 runs not to mention the off piste in Le Balme Le Tour & Vallorcine Ski Area opportunities.

There is an idyllic off piste run through the trees right down to the train station at Vallorcine. After an aprés-ski drink at the station bar a scenic train ride back into the Chamonix valley is a great way to finish the day.

There are restaurant facilities at Charamillon. Although the parking is fairly good at Le Tour the Chamonix free bus is the best way to get there.

How to access Le Tour Balme and Vallorcine Ski Area

Normally we say that Le Tour Vallorcine and Balme Ski Area/Resort is the easiest one of the all Chamonix Valley. It's good and perfect for a first day of skiing. The runs are in most Blues and Green, with some easy reds.

You have two access ways to this ski resort/area. By the village of Le Tour or by the village of Vallorcine. Both ways are equipped with very recent cable cars. It's a perfect spot to be in a good weather day. Not only because it's 100% sun exposed but also because you have the most beautiful view of the all Chamonix Valley.

Chamonix Valley Map

Le Tour ski resort is part of the world-famous Chamonix/Mont Blanc ski regions. Le Tour has direct access to a diverse range of pistes from an altitude of 1462m with a top of 2250m the snow in this resort is often very good and skiing back to the village is usually possible throughout the whole season. Le Tour is also a good base from which to explore the whole Chamonix area and all the challenges it has on offer. Le Tour is a popular destination for families and beginners because although there is a variety of pistes to explore directly there is a nursery area close to the village for younger learners to get to grips with skiing whilst being close to home.

Notes on the Le Tour Snow Report

The snow report describes the piste and off-piste ski conditions at Le Tour. You can submit an updated snow report here. Piste and off-piste are often different so we ask snow reporters to describe Le Tour piste and off-piste conditions separately. If these details are missing from the Le Tour snow report, you can predict off-piste conditions using the snow depth, the date of the most recent snowfall at Le Tour, the Le Tour weather report and the forecast. Members can check the hindcast for a timeline of Le Tour weather conditions. This detailed weather log makes it easy to predict snow conditions at Le Tour, even when the snow report is too old to be useful. The hindcast shows when our weather model last predicted snowfall at Le Tour. It shows how much snow we think fell then, and the way freezing level, wind and weather have varied through time. You will be able to predict whether to expect off-piste powder, slush, spring snow, ice or wind crust. If you see a report of powder or fresh snow conditions several days after snow last fell, there is usually a good reason. At crowded ski resorts, off-piste new snow will be tracked out within hours of a fresh fall but wherever crowds are light in relation to the accessible terrain, it will be possible to stay fresh much later, perhaps several days later. Alternatively, strong winds sometimes redistribute powder snow enough to cover old tracks, or it may simply be that the ski area was not fully open for some period after the snow fell, so fresh snow that fell a while ago has remained un-tracked until this report. Whenever weather conditions change, Le Tour snow conditions will change too, so it is important to check the time and date of the Le Tour snow report and to guess what effect the weather will have had on snow quality between then and now. For example, the Le Tour snow report on Friday afternoon may indicate fresh powder but if Friday night is mild and rainy then ski conditions will be very poor on Saturday morning. Conversely, if the weather stays stable and cold, the same snow report can be valid for more than a week. We advise that you check the Le Tour snow forecast to see if conditions are likely to change before your visit. Many skiers enjoy moguls and fast icy pistes but for off-piste skiers and free-ride snowboarders, fresh snow starts to deteriorate from the moment it settles. Wind, rain and periods of above-freezing temperature are the primary cause of the evolution from fresh powder to windslab, ice or slush. High altitude slopes that are shaded from the sun and sheltered from the wind preserve powder stashes longer after fresh snowfall. If the snow report mentions pockets of powder at Le Tour, study the Le Tour piste map in relation to the wind direction to determine the most likely locations.

We stress the importance of checking the date on the Le Tour snow report particularly around weekends. For example, the snow report for Le Tour on Friday may indicate powder after recent snowfall but following a sunny and busy weekend, when the locals hit the mountains en masse, the ski conditions (at any resort) can deteriorate rapidly and late arrivals may see very different ski conditions. Of course some people look for deteriorating conditions in the snow report for the likely development of mogul fields but for powder lovers and particularly snowboarders this can mean tracked out off-piste snow. Of course, this doesn’t always happen quickly after fresh snowfall particularly at quiet North facing resorts at high altitude where genuine powder stashes may be found days or even weeks later. It is worth checking the piste map for Le Tour (found in menu above) for the location of favourable slopes that may be described in the "Le Tour Snow Conditions" part of the snow report. In addition to checking the Le Tour snow report we recommend that you check the snow forecasts found in the menu at the top of the page along with our ski resort guide.

The secret to a simple and sensibly priced French ski trip

M y life-long quest to find a sensibly priced ski trip with the shortest transfer has taken me to several hundred resorts across the mountains of Europe .  Finally, I think I’ve found it in Le Grand Bornand in France.

Where? You may well ask. Le Grand Bornand certainly lacks the international cachet of Courchevel and Val d’Isère , but, in fact, it’s one of the most popular of France’s 364 resorts – that is, for the French, who make up most of the visitors and who have been keeping its secrets under wraps.

Ski trip success depends on achieving maximum hours on quality snow with the least travel hassle – particularly if you have small children in tow. With a theoretical choice of nearly 4,000 resorts in Europe, finding the ideal destination with these criteria should be an easy task. However, once you factor in a suitable ski area for your party’s skill set, acceptable prices, warm ambience and sufficient snow cover, your options shrink dramatically.

For me, the key to all this lies in the shortest possible transfers, which are all too often prolonged, stressful and exhausting experiences. I once flew to Ljubljana airport in Slovenia, grabbed my skis and bag off the luggage carousel and was riding the gondola at Krvavec within 25 minutes of touchdown – it was a lightbulb moment.

If you’re drawn to skiing in the Alps’ biggest resorts, finding comparable convenience in France is tricky. So when asked by friends working in Geneva to suggest a sympa ski resort nearby for a joint week together, I phoned Xavier Schouller. French-born Schouller founded British self-drive tour operator Peak Retreats in 2002. Initially, he used his native insider knowledge to concentrate on sending UK clients to small French destinations that were largely unknown to the British public.

“Easy,” he said: ”Go to Le Grand Bornand. It’s great for all standards. You won’t regret it.”

In the Aravis mountains, Le Grand Bornand is just a five-minute car journey or free ski bus ride from better-known La Clusaz. Together with little St Jean de Sixt and Manigod, they share a lift pass and an impressive 230km of pistes.

Importantly, the resort is located just an hour by road from Geneva airport and 30 minutes from the lakeside town of Annécy – making it easily accessible from all directions.  Our friends drove, my wife and I flew by easyJet from Bristol and took the resort’s minibus shuttle ( aravis-shuttle.com ) that runs six times daily and costs only €40pp each way.

Although Le Grand Bornand lies at just 1,000m, with a top altitude of 2,100m, it has impressively reliable snow cover thanks to the “fridge effect” caused by its proximity to the Mont Blanc massif.

Snow cover during our late-January visit was remarkable in this mixed winter and, with pastures rather than rocks beneath the piste, a base of only a few centimetres was required in order to open the ski runs.

The resort also has a life outside skiing. Since the 13 th century, Le Grand Bornand has been the spiritual home of Reblochon cheese, the key ingredient in tartiflette and other dishes from the Haute-Savoie. In the Middle Ages, the church and feudal lords based their annual milk production tax on the number of buckets filled at the afternoon milking.

The canny farmers in the region only half-milked their cows in front of the tax collectors.  They found that when they completed the task under cover of darkness the second stage produced much creamier milk that was ideal for cheese-making.

Seemingly, you’re never far from a cow here. When more than 2,000 of them emerge in springtime from their winter quarters on the 45 working farms the cacophony of bells haunts the whole mountainside.

As a traditional destination, rather than purpose-built giant, it’s important to understand the resort’s geography. Le Grand Bornand is made up of two accommodation bases: Le Chinaillon is officially the resort’s ski centre with its ski school, nursery slopes and easy chairlift access to the mountain. It has the most chalets and the majority of hotels. 10 minutes away by road and linked by piste, is the ancient village of Le Grand Bornand – our base for the week.

Les Chalets de Joy is an imposing new complex of five-star apartments, situated on the hillside just above the two mountain access gondolas. Two-bedroom apartments with views across the village come with two bathrooms and a well-equipped open plan living area and kitchen. There’s also a pool, gym and wellness area and a lounge and bar.

A short walk away, the Joyère gondola takes you up to a secluded area with easy greens and blues. Le Rosay, which departs from the same station, brings you to the heart of the skiing and the pistes leading down to Le Chinaillon.

Mont Lachat at 2,100m is the starting point for a whole series of surprisingly challenging runs, as well as a dedicated and steep freeride sector of the mountain. However, one of the key advantages of the resort is that it really does suit all standards.

In all there’s 90km of pistes served by 24 lifts, three beginner areas, and a renowned snowpark with lines for all levels. The mountainside is dotted with welcoming huts for a drink or a lazy lunch. Papi Jo just below the green Serpentine slope at Le Chinaillon was one of our favourites –  it has an outdoor terrace and a barbecue in good weather. The centre of the atmospheric village also has a good choice of relatively inexpensive restaurants and bars.

Further afield, the free ski bus presents the opportunity to explore larger La Clusaz. Here, the spread-out ski area is divided into separate sectors – Balme, located the furthest from the village, was a personal favourite.

The journey home? Our friends drove us to Geneva airport, and we were sitting smugly in the departure lounge within 75 minutes of reluctantly departing our holiday apartment.

Peak Retreats offers a week’s stay at Les Chalets de Joy apartments from £1,999 total, for a two-bedroom apartment, self catering, including Eurotunnel crossing. If you choose to fly rather than drive, the price is discounted. Equipment rental with Intersport costs from €74 for six days, with free overnight lockers. Lift passes cost €280 for six days. Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

Le Tour & Vallorcine, Chamonix Valley

Summer lifts giving you access to the Swiss border, hiking & MTB trails

Le Tour is a small, quaint little village at the far end of the Chamonix valley in the 'Domaine de la Balme' area with access to some great hiking and mountain bike trails.

Take a stroll around the back streets to see some of the classically Alpine style houses and the church dome. Look up to see the glaciers reaching down towards you, which are really impressive even in the height of summer.

There are three lifts open in this area during the summer months, the gondola from the village to the mid station (Charamillon) the Autannes chair lift and the Vallorcine gondola on the far side.

You can take mountain bikes on all of these lifts in summer as Le Tour and Vallorcine have dedicated mountain biking trails.

Who should go

Events in [locality].

During the summer you might find hundreds of trail runners passing through the area as part of the UTMB week , which sees races of varying lengths and difficulty set off around the trails of the Chamonix Valley.

Things to do in [locality]

Le Tour is a quiet village away from the hustle and bustle of Chamonix centre, with just a few cafés, restaurants and places to stay. If you're looking for somewhere close to beginner slopes this could be the place for you.

In summer the area is a hot-spot for hikers and mountain bikers, the latter ride on dedicated trails so that there's no cross over with walkers, so everyone can enjoy the mountains at the same time. The many walking trails offer spectacular views of the Chamonix Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Why not stay in a mountain hut , or take a guided glacier walk ?

Dining in [locality]

There are a small cluster of mountain restaurants in Le Tour and a couple of cafés in Le Tour and Vallorcine, just by the bottom of the lift stations.

Le Tour can be reached best by car, as the train only takes you as far as Montroc. It takes around 25 minutes to drive here from the centre of Chamonix, or alternatively you can take one of the local buses which will also take around 30 minutes from the town centre.

When to come

Take a look at all the summer lift opening dates and timetables .

How to get passes

You can buy summer lift passes at the ticket office once you arrive, or buy a Mont Blanc Multi-pass in advance on line. See all the Summer Lift Prices and if you're not sure which pass to buy, read our Guide .

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

le tour ski

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
