Travel Agencies

The first Travel Agency in Epsom, was at Epsom Coaches garage in South Street, in a small shop where personal callers could book their coach trips and later, other travel arrangements. This way back in the 1930’s when Travel Agencies as we know them today, had not been invented.  Epsom Travel eventually grew to have four branches, in Epsom, Banstead and Leatherhead, along with a branch at the Tower of London, in conjunction with Friendship Tours, a major client and partner.   The second location for Epsom Travel, was in Epsom town centre, adjacent to Reid’s department store and the Spread Eagle Hotel. Reid’s was later demolished, but the Spread Eagle and Epsom Travel’s tiny shop survived.  Today the same shop is occupied by a branch of Timpson’s.  Epsom Travel moving to a spacious shop around the corner in the High Street. The Leatherhead shop, was originally known as Crescent Travel, but later was renamed Epsom Travel (Leatherhead) located by the Leatherhead Theatre. The Banstead Travel shop was based in Banstead High Street.   As members of ABTA, the travel shops benefitted from the boom in foreign travel of the sixties and seventies and continued to prosper into the eighties, with a dedicated team of experienced travel experts. However, the advent of Teletext and later the internet, saw a phased withdrawal from the travel agency sector. The last branch, being sold on to Mike Tattersall, a long time friend of Epsom Coaches, who continued to run the business as Epsom World Choice into the noughties. Mike eventually took his services on line, in common with most of the travel industry.

Epsom Explore founded after coach industry deal completed

Gardiners NMC has sold its Epsom operation to a four-strong team of coach industry figures who will use it as the basis of a new coach holiday and day trip brand that they are developing called Epsom Explore.

The individuals involved are brothers Peter and Tim Lewis, of South East London operator Lewis Coaches; Ricky Trueman, formerly of Truemans Coaches of Aldershot; and Gareth Wells, of Farnborough-based operator Coachpoint. The new undertaking will be led by Mr Trueman and Mr Wells.

Epsom Explore has taken on the lease on the former Gardiners NMC travel shop in the town, its telephone number and the customer database. The three former employees of Gardiners NMC’s Epsom operation – currently subject to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme – will also transfer to the new business. As a result, no jobs will be lost.

One coach is part of the deal, but vehicles from the Coachpoint and Lewis Coaches fleets will be rebranded and used to deliver the Epsom Explore product. A brochure has been released this week and a website will follow shortly.

Peter Lewis explains that Lewis Coaches’ Ebdons Tours arm is already active in the same segment as Epsom Explore. “We plan to expand the brand in co-operation with the Epsom Explore name to serve North Kent and South East London,” he says.

“We have operated the Ebdons Tours brand for 20 years and we’re looking to grow our presence in that market.” Mr Lewis says that while the first Epsom Explore brochure was launched only this week, there has already been a good response. 2021’s brochure will be released in September.

Gardiners NMC says the decision to sell its Epsom operation was made solely because of the impact of coronavirus COVID-19. While it now intends to focus on its core North East market, all tours for the rest of 2020 from there have been cancelled. That is due in part to the reluctance of many venues to accept groups, the company says. Day trips and some mystery tours are not affected.

Gardiners NMC established a presence in the South East in 2017. It agreed a deal to continue the Epsom Coaches day trip and holiday programme ahead of the latter operator’s closure by owner RATP Dev UK.

Epsom Coaches will no longer be running their tour programme after the 25th June 2017. No tours will be available after this time.

A door-to-door service is offered on all holidays and is included in the holiday price. Customers are picked up from their home and brought to the departure lounge in Epsom and once everyone is present, the coach then departs. When the holiday has finished, everyone is returned to their front door.

A wide selection of day excursions including: visits to the coast, the countryside, homes and gardens, and the continent are also operated by Epsom Coaches.

If you live within a 15 mile radius of the Epsom Coaches Departure Lounge then you can take full advantage of their Home to Holiday Service. This service is free and means that you will be collected from home and taken to the Departure Lounge where you will board the coach. Once your holiday is over, you will be returned to your front door so there's no need to worry about travel arrangements. If you do not live within the 15 mile radius, you will be required to get yourselves to one of the conveniently located pick-up points in the Surrey area in order to join the holiday or day trip.

Epsom Coaches are signed up to the Bonded Coach Holidays Group (BCHG) and this means that any monies paid to them will be secure. Epsom Coaches are also members of the Coach Tourism Council (CTC), The Guild of British Coach Operators and the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT).
