REVIEW: Henry Rollins’ Good to See You tour at Perth Concert Hall

Henry Rollins used to walk off a stage covered in grime and flecks of glass from rolling around on the floor while punk punters ricocheted around him.

Monday’s performance at the Perth Concert Hall was a more sedate affair yet retained the hardcore delivery.

Henry Rollins bolsters 2023 ‘Good To See You’ tour with new Brisbane and Melbourne shows

Former Black Flag singer Henry Rollins has expanded his upcoming speaking tour of Australia – his first in seven years – with new shows in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Now spanning a total of 20 shows across June and July, the ‘Good To See You’ tour will hit a mix of capital cities and regional hotspots, starting with back-to-back shows in Perth and the Margaret River on Monday June 5 and Tuesday 6. He’ll duck past Adelaide on his way to the Northern Territory that Thursday (June 8), before sharing his social commentary and punk anecdotes in Alice Springs and Darwin.

From there, he’ll head to Queensland for two sold-out shows in Brisbane on Thursday June 15 and Friday 16 – sandwiched between dates in Cairns and Caloundra – with the newly announced third show going down on Saturday June 18.

Rollins will then to Canberra for a show on Tuesday June 20, before giving fans in Victoria four chances to see him: he’ll perform in Bendigo on Wednesday June 21, then Ballarat the next day (June 22), his first sold-out show in Melbourne on Saturday June 24, and then his newly announced second show there on Sunday June 25.

Up next on the itinerary will be a trio of gigs in New South Wales – more specifically Thirroul, Sydney and Newcastle – with Rollins then wrapping the tour up in Launceston and Hobart at the start of July.

Tickets for all shows (except the sold-out Brisbane and Melbourne dates, of course) are on sale now – find them  here for the dates in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Thirroul and Sydney, with all other dates available here .

Rollins’ last Australian tour took place in 2016, although he made a one-off stop through Byron Bay in July of 2018, when he performed a unique spoken-word set at Splendour In The Grass .

The multi-hyphenate has spent much of the past decade on tours like this, with his last musical effort – the Rollins Band album ‘Weighting’ – arriving in 2004. A few years back, he explained to Rick Rubin that he stopped making music because “there’s no more toothpaste in the tube”. He elaborated: “The smart thing I did as a younger man was one day I woke up in my bed and I went, ‘I’m done with music. I don’t hate it. I just have no more lyrics.”

Henry Rollins’ Australian ‘Good To See You’ tour dates are:

JUNE Monday 5 – Wajuk/Perth, Concert Hall Tuesday 6 – Wardandi/Margaret River, HEART Thursday 8 – Kaurna/Adelaide, Thebarton Theatre Friday 9 – Arrernte/Alice Springs, Araluen Arts Centre Saturday 10 – Larrakia/Darwin, Entertainment Centre Tuesday 13 – Yidinjdji/Cairns, Performing Arts Centre Thursday 15 – Yuggera/Brisbane, The Tivoli (SOLD OUT) Friday 16 – Yuggera/Brisbane, The Tivoli (SOLD OUT) Saturday 17 – Gubbi Gubbi/Caloundra, The Events Centre Sunday 18 – Yuggera/Brisbane, The Tivoli (NEW SHOW) Tuesday 20 – Ngambri and Ngunnawal/Canberra, Llewellyn Hall @ ANU Wednesday 21 – Dja Dja Wurrung/Bendigo, Ulumbarra Theatre Thursday 22 – Wathaurong/Ballarat, Civic Hall Saturday 24 – Woiworung/Melbourne, Hamer Hall (SOLD OUT) Sunday 25 – Woiworung/Melbourne, Hamer Hall (NEW SHOW) Tuesday 27 – Tharawal/Thirroul, Anita’s Theatre Wednesday 28 – Eora/Sydney, State Theatre Friday 30 – Awabakal/Newcastle, City Hall

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, punk-rock legend henry rollins is bringing his new spoken-word tour to australia this winter.

On his first trip to our shores since 2016, the former Black Flag frontman — and actor, author and radio host — will look back over the past seven years.

Punk-Rock Legend Henry Rollins Is Bringing His New Spoken-Word Tour to Australia This Winter

Everyone should see Henry Rollins on a stage. Luckily, audiences have had ample opportunities for more than four decades. The musician first came to fame singing behind the microphone in punk-rock band Black Flag and then Rollins Band, but is now just as renowned for his spoken-word shows, where he waxes lyrical (and candid and amusing) about his life, fame and the state of the world.

Australians are no stranger to Rollins getting chatty; however, thanks to the pandemic, he hasn't taken to stages Down Under since 2016. That's about to change come winter, with the icon, actor, author and radio host heading around the country on an 18-show, 17-city tour. The place scoring a double dose of Rollins? Brisbane.

Rollins' spoken-word gigs always sell out, and they're always an entertaining — and unflinchingly honest — night spent listening to the Sons of Anarchy , Lost Highway and Heat star. This time, he's visiting both capitals and regional centres, and notching up every Aussie state and territory, on a tour dubbed 'Good to See You'.

Attendees can look forward to Rollins looking back over the past seven years since he last visited Australia, stepping through his life from 2016 until COVID-19 hit — and, of course, exploring what's happened since. Fingers crossed for more mullet insights , too.

Rollins makes his way around Australia after a massive leg in Europe, where he's currently flitting from Croatia, Poland and Finland to Sweden, Germany, France and the United Kingdom — and more.

And, his latest tour comes after he added two more books to his name in 2022: Sic , which draws upon the frustration of not knowing if his touring life would ever return; and Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 3 .

Australian charity Ocean Heroes teaching autistic children to surf and help reduce drowning

A child in a red life jacket and wetsuit stands on a surfboard on sand. Two adults instruct him.

Atticus Lambert is smiling ear to ear as he catches his first ever wave on a sunny autumn morning.

"I used to be a bit scared of coming to the beach," the 12-year old says.

"Are you scared now?" his mother asks.

"Nope."

A young boy with a red life vest stands on a surfboard in whitewash, pushed by a man.

Atticus is among about 100 children taking part in surf sessions that morning at Perth's Trigg Beach.

They're run by Ocean Heroes, which offers free monthly 30-minute workshops for children on the autism spectrum.

They had more than 1,300 participants come to their Perth events this season, and many others come to events in New South Wales, Queensland and regional Western Australia.

A young boy standing next to a surfboard looks at a man in a yellow rashie giving him instructions.

The sessions always include two volunteers to one child, and start with participants being run through the basics on the sand, like how to pop up and stand on the board.

After catching as many waves as they can with the help of volunteers, they head back to the shore and get a certificate.

A young boy with a red life vest kneels on a surfboard high-fiving a man.

"It was very bumpy and so much fun," Atticus says.

Safety in the spotlight

Luke Hallam helped found the group in Perth in 2016 and said it aims to help children with autism — who are three times more likely to drown than neurotypical children in Australia — access the ocean safely.

"If they're new to the ocean, we'll teach them where to get into the water, where not to get into the water," he says.

"If they've been surfing for a long time with us, we can actually teach them how to duck dive a wave, how to get out of a rip. We set really good boundaries here.

A man in a blue shirt smiles by the beach. He is wearing a black setsuit underneath.

"When they come to the ocean with their families outside of our events, they know they can't go into the ocean without somebody there to help them."

Mr Hallam says their first event only attracted 20 people, and now they get up to 150.

"We get participants who come down who have literally never been on the sand, to participants now who have surfed with us for eight years," he says.

"They come down here, they learn that it's okay to fail, they learn that if you fall off a wave, it's okay to try again.

"They take that back into their school life, their family life, their social lives.

Two men on sand instruct a child on a surfboard.

"Our goal is to make sure we are Australia wide, so every single autistic person in our country gets access to the ocean safely."

They expanded to Sydney last year, and held their first sessions in Noosa in QLD, and the Northern Rivers in NSW this month.

Confidence building

"Cool, awesome and terrifying," is how another participant, 10-year-old Mitchell Barton-Tillett, describes his time on the water.

Mitchell's mother, Kat Barton, say her son is building his confidence with every paddle.

A woman and a boy in a life vest smile for the camera.

"He gets dumped but he gets straight back onto the board and seeing the smile on his face and seeing the smile on everybody's face, everybody's so supportive," she says.

"You see them get up, you give them a cheer, that sense of community is great."

Social challenges

From physios to football players and surfers, the people who give up their time to run the sessions come from different walks of life.

Volunteer Zoe Woodward is a support worker and says many children with autism face huge social challenges.

"A lot of them are homeschooled or sometimes find it hard to socialise, but coming down here, they can just get out of their head and just enjoy being with strangers and make some really good friends," she says.

"Seeing a smile on their face is what makes it."

A blonde woman in a white rashie and green wetsuit smiles at the camera.

Sasha Goranova, another volunteer, says the program helps tackle the dangers children with autism face in the water in a way that is fulfilling and exciting.

"Some parents might not be comfortable taking kids to the beach, it gets those kids more comfortable," she says.

Preventing tragedy

Justine Leavy is an associate professor at Curtin University and researches the prevalence of drowning and how to prevent it.

She says many children drown due to a lack of supervision or because they overestimate their ability to swim — but that was especially acute with neurodiverse children.

A woman named Justine Leavy smiles for the camera.

"Kids with diverse needs, and specifically autism spectrum disorder, often might wander off, or they could be very quiet," Dr Leavy says.

"And those are the factors that often contribute to people drowning."

She also says active supervision, teaching people to know their limits, having up-to-date CPR qualifications, and knowledge around how to use a life jacket are key ways to prevent deaths in the water.

Members of the public at a crowded beach during sunset.

While most drownings tend to occur during summer across the population, Dr Leavy says children with autism are more likely to drown in winter, in lakes or dams.

She says the skills learnt in a program like Ocean Heroes "could prevent drowning", alongside the social benefits.

However, different types of waterways in Australia like pools, oceans or dams all present unique risks.

"Knowledge of water skills and water safety is transferable, but knowing conditions is not," she says.

A group of people at the beach with surfboards.

Back on the sand overlooking Perth's pristine surf, Atticus recounts the day's events with his parents, huddled under the warmth of a towel.

A boy holding a towel by the beach and his mother next to him with her arm around his shoulder.

"Do they make you feel safe?" his mother asks.

"Yes," he says.

The best thing about Henry is that he likes a dialogue, he likes a debate and knows when he's wasting his breath and when he's up against a closed mind.
