27 best eco-friendly travel products that will change your life [2024].

Travel is, by its very nature, pretty unsustainable.

Just think about how much you are increasing your carbon footprint each time you step foot onto a plane.

Oh, but don’t worry. Don’t panic. I’m not here to put you off travelling for good.

Of course, your travel habits are not solely responsible for the ice caps melting.

On the contrary, this post is here to tell you that although travel generally has a bad impact on this dear planet of ours, there are ways you can travel in a more eco-friendly way.

Enter eco-friendly travel products…

One of the easiest ways to start living a more eco-friendly life is by making the simple switch from using unsustainable products to sustainable products.

So guys and gals, it is time to treat both yourself and the planet with the 27 best eco-friendly travel products that will probably change your life!

1. Reusable water bottle

At least a million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute.

Switching out buying bottled water for a refillable and reusable bottle is one of the simplest and most effective changes you can make to do your bit for the planet.

My much-loved, albeit overpriced, Swell bottle has seen me through many years across many countries. I love the shit out of it!

Not only does it look beautiful but it has never leaked or failed me too. Plus, it keeps beverages cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12.

Other options for reusable bottles include the collapsible Que bottle and the Elephant Box stainless steel bottle pictured above.

Chilly’s , Swell’s main competitor, is also a good shout, though I’ve found that their bottles aren’t as good quality.

2. Solid toiletries

Solid toiletries are a pretty solid way of helping this lovely planet of ours. One of the best places to find solid toiletries is Lush .

They have a whole array of eco-friendly travel products including solid shampoo and conditioner bars, solid perfume and solid toothpaste .

All these toiletries are really light, take up very little space and involve no nasty plastic.

Plus, they smell proper lush (pun totally intended).

Who wants to be lugging around huge plastic bottles of shampoo and conditioner anyway?

Sounds like a bit of a pain in the arse, if you ask me.

3. Packing cubes made from recycled plastic bottles

If you know me, you know I love packing cubes.

They are frankly one of the best inventions ever.

They help you save space in your luggage, fit more in and keep you organised.

No more scrambling around for ages in your suitcase trying to find that  one t-shirt.

And what makes a packing cube even better?

Packing cubes made from recycled plastic bottles , that’s what.

These bad boys are manufactured from high-quality recycled polyester (RPET) fabric derived from recycling post-consumer plastic bottles.

Not too bad, huh?

4. Reusable makeup wipes

One of my favourite eco-friendly travel products for life on the road (and, well, at home too) is reusable makeup wipes.

Disposable makeup wipes are a lazy traveller’s best friend, but they are the environment’s worst enemy.

Made from a nasty combination of non-biodegradable polyesters, rayon fibres, polypropylene and wood pulp, your much-loved makeup wipes take decades to break down in landfill.

Enter the eco-friendly saviour you have been waiting for: reusable makeup wipes .

These easy-to-use pads remove 100% of your makeup away with any cleanser or toner – or even just water!

Plus they can be used up to 1000 times. Just clean them as you go!

5. Antibacterial and odourless clothing

Did you know that two-thirds of the environmental impact of a piece of clothing is created at the consumer phase?

Aka laundry.

So opting for clothes which don’t need to be washed as much not only saves you the hassle and cost of laundry whilst travelling, but it’s also bloody great for the environment too.

My boyfriend has recently invested in some Silvertech tees from Organic Basics and they have literally changed his life.

He’s gone out clubbing, gone to the gym and all sorts in his tees. And guess what: they still don’t smell at all!

Organic Basics sell all sorts from underwear and socks to tops and leggings.

All made from antimicrobial, anti-odour, permanently infused natural silver, GOTS-certified organic cotton goodness!

6. Organic suncream

You may be protecting your skin but did you know that you are not protecting the environment while wearing suncream?

Suncream is filled with nasty chemicals that are especially toxic for marine life if you’re swimming in the sea whilst travelling.

Opting for a natural SPF is a great way to be kind to your skin and to the environment.

A great eco-friendly suncream is Green People’s scent-free suncream which works like a charm!

This cruelty-free sun cream is made from 84% certified organic ingredients and comes in fully recyclable, plant-based packaging.

Pick up their tan accelerator and after-sun for extra eco brownie points!

7. Luci Inflatable Solar Lantern

Gather around campers, this solar lantern might just change your life.

Not only does it have a great name (big up all Lucy’s) but this solar-powered lantern is also an eco-friendly way to bring a bit of light into your life when travelling.

It’s really lightweight, collapsible and affordable, making it great for any backpacking or camping trip.

Plus, because it charges thanks to the sun it is super sustainable too!

8. Eco-friendly travel towel

Made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, the Nomadix travel towel is nothing but kind to the environment.

It’s also extremely light, compact and fast-drying, making it not only eco-friendly but also really convenient for just chucking in your bag on the go.

So whether you’re heading for yoga, the gym, the beach, camping or travelling, opt for this eco-friendly alternative.

9. Plastic-free sanitary products

Alright, uterus-less humans, you’re allowed to tune out for this one.

If you’ve started to think about how periods are a bloody nightmare for the environment, then these plastic-free sanitary products will help you have the greenest of periods (not literally, I’d hope).

Opting for a more eco-friendly menstruation is as easy as investing in a pair of Thinx period pants , an OrganiCup menstrual cup or Honour Your Flow organic cotton reusable sanitary pads.

10. Solar charger

Solar-powered eco-friendly travel products are some of my favourites.

Our good ol’ friend the sun is an amazing source of energy – so let’s utilise it!

Finding a reliable way of charging your tech can often be a major hassle for travellers.

So why not tick two boxes at once with a solar charger that eases both your and the planet’s problems?

This one requires just a few hours of daylight to power your devices for several charges. Not too bad.

11. Solar-powered speaker

Sun, sun, sun, here we come ! Listen to the harmonies of The Beatles thanks to the sun powering your tunes.

Perfect for hiking adventures and days at the beach, the built-in solar panel on this portable Bluetooth speaker charges up your device in just ten minutes.

This speaker is both shockproof and splashproof so there’s no need to worry about light rain or splashed water ruining your speaker.

12. OneNine5 refillable silicone bottles and travel wash bags

grey-pink-and-blue-onenine5-silicone-travel-bottles-on-sink

If you’re not sold on the whole solid toiletries thing quite yet, reusable silicone travel bottles may just be up your street.

My favourites are OneNine5 ‘s which allow you to minimize waste while travelling by skipping the travel-sized toiletries and using reusable travel bottles instead. I use them all the time.

These fun little bottles are T SA approved  so you can b reeze through airport security.

And even better yet, they are c arefully designed to fit inside OneNine5’s travel wash bags .

Constructed from 100% recycled plastic lining and cruelty-free vegan leather, with water-resistant zippers, these premium eco wash bags are one of my favourite eco-friendly travel products.

Similarly, all their packaging  is biodegradable, recyclable or made from recycled materials .

And they even look the part too.

13. Reusable straws

These bad boys have become all the rage this past year.

Apparently, the world really bloody loves straws. Who’d have known it?

I personally don’t use straws but if you’re a sucker for a straw (pun intended), reusable straws will help you sip your drink in a way that doesn’t suck for the environment (oops, there I go again).

Unfortunately, plastic straws are one of the top waste products being dumped in the ocean, killing loads of aquatic animals.

But don’t worry, reusable straws come in all sorts of eco-friendly materials.

Bamboo, silicone or stainless steel, whatever takes your fancy!

14. Bamboo toothbrush

Bamboo toothbrush. Plastic-free toothbrush. Eco-friendly toothbrush. White girl with brown hair brushing teeth and smiling wearing a rainbow Diversity tee.

Millions of plastic toothbrushes are discarded every year – not good news for the environment.

Care for your teeth and the environment at once with an ever-popular bamboo toothbrush!

Bamboo is highly sustainable because it is a fast-growing crop that requires no fertiliser and self-regenerates from its own roots. This means it doesn’t need to be replanted.

With a 100% biodegradable bamboo handle and charcoal-infused bristles for natural teeth whitening, this toothbrush is one of the best eco-friendly travel products.

15. Scrubba wash bag

Nothing beats clean clothes while on the road (or at home for that matter!).

But finding somewhere cheap and cheerful to do laundry can often be quite a challenge.

Plus, as aforementioned, laundry has a hugely negative environmental impact .

The pretty revolutionary Scrubba wash bag is here to solve all your problems.

Branded as “the world’s smallest ‘washing machine'”, all you have to do is chuck your clothes in the bag, add water and detergent, and start rubbing.

You’re left with squeaky clean clothes in no time, without the nasty environmental impact! Win, win.

16. Eco-friendly detergent

If you want your Scrubba wash bag laundry to be even more effective, use eco-friendly detergent .

Eco-friendly detergent is a detergent that is free of artificial fragrances, chlorine bleach, dyes, and optical brighteners.

There are so many ethical detergent brands you can choose from including Ecover ,  Seventh Generation ,  Ecozone ,  The Bio-D Company  and  Sonett .

17. Soap nuts

Or even better yet, go completely natural with soap nuts .

Okay, so these bad boys may sound too good to be true.

Washing my clothes with nuts?

Seriously?!

But they totally work.

These 100% biodegradable, vegan-friendly, organic Indian nuts wash your clothes  so  well.

No powder or liquid required – just chuck them in with your washing and you’re good to go!

18. Organic bags for shopping and laundry

Even when travelling it’s likely you will need to do the groceries.

And you do not need to be using new plastic or paper bags each time. What a waste!

Stretchy, lightweight and durable, these organic cloth and mesh drawstring bags are the perfect eco-friendly alternative to your typical shopping bags.

19. Organic utensils

Let’s just sort out your whole kitchen while we’re at it, shall we?

Next up on this list of eco-friendly travel products is organic utensils .

If you haven’t gathered by now, contrary to what Barbie might think, plastic is not fantastic.

Especially for the environment.

And single-use plastic?

Even worse.

So skip the single-use plastic on your next backpacking adventure or camping trip with a set of utensils made from sustainable materials that you can use over and over again.

20. Water purification system

While a reusable water bottle is great for countries where tap water is safe to drink, that’s obviously not the case everywhere across the globe.

This may mean buying bottled water.

However, don’t part with your pennies and contribute to plastic pollution too quickly!

There are so many great portable water purifiers for travel , such as my trusty friend, LifeStraw® Go .

This all-in-one device doubles up as both a reusable water bottle and a really powerful water filtration device.

The ridiculously clever system reduces chlorine, bad taste and odour, and also removes bacteria and parasites (including Salmonella, E-coli, Giardia) and chemicals.

No clean water?

No problem!

21. Deet-free insect repellant

It’s 2019, gang. Who needs harsh chemicals anymore?

To keep both the bugs and chemicals at bay, buy a plant-based, deet-free insect repellant .

This will ensure that you are not covering either yourself or the environment with nasty toxins.

22. Reusable razor

This is one of the eco-friendly travel products that surprisingly few people have made the switch to.

Buying an ethically sourced, reusable, unisex razor and blades is an easy way to reduce your plastic waste.

Locally made in my little city of Exeter, I can really vouch for the quality of this razor!

23. Recycled hiking bag

Whether you’re heading out on a long trek or a short day hike, everyone needs a durable backpack to stow their belongings in.

But have you ever thought about how sustainable your trusty backpack is?

Luckily, Osprey has introduced Archeon, a new series of 100% recycled backpacks that are also entirely PFC-free.

PFCs (per- and poly-fluorinated chemicals) are all completely man-made chemicals that don’t occur naturally, so any items without these are good in my book.

Like all of Osprey’s products, these backpacks don’t skimp on quality either.

Featuring a fully adjustable comfortable back system, an all-important rain cover and plenty of different pockets and sections, these backpacks have every you could need and more for adventures near and far.

My blue 45L pack is my go-to for all-weather treks!

24. KeepCup

I’m personally not a coffee drinker but if you can’t function without your everyday caffeine, it might be worth investing in a KeepCup .

Rather than using disposable takeaway coffee cups every day, this sustainably sourced reusable coffee cup takes you one step further towards saving the planet.

25. A sustainable watch

Wherever you’re travelling in the world at whatever time of year, you are probably going to need a good ol’ reliable watch to keep you company.

So it’s time to invest in a sustainable yet stylish watch that will last you for years to come.

My favourite is my Native watch from Nordgreen, a company that prides itself on the Scandinavian values of generosity and social responsibility.

Not only does the company have sustainable production and packaging but they also support three great causes: providing clean water, educating the future, and protecting the rainforest.

You can read more about their Giving Back Program here .

26. Plastic-free food canisters

Elephant Box plastic-free reusable food canisters. Small and large canisters. Stainless steel food canisters.

Quite like plastic bottles and plastic cutlery, plastic takeaway tubs, clingfilm and ziplock bags are also not great for the environment.

Buying a reusable, stainless steel food canister is not only great for the environment but great for you too.

They really come in handy when camping or if you need to take lunch out with you for the day.

Look, I’ll be honest with you. I’m about to be a massive hypocrite.

I own hundreds and hundreds of books. I love books.

The type you can hold in your hand. In short, I read a lot .

But I hate reading from Kindles.

And you know what? That’s a bitch to the environment.

But hey, you win some, you lose some.

However, with that being said, if you really want to be kinder to the environment and you are a big reader, just buy a Kindle , yeah?

There are just so many good Kindles to choose from so you have no excuse!

Whether you’re waiting around in an airport terminal or a bus station, there’s always an opportunity to whack out a good book while travelling.

Plus, the weight of books is not fun to travel with.

So save yourself a backache and save the environment too by purchasing a Kindle.

Similarly, don’t buy travel guides and maps. I mean, you really do not need to.

The internet is chockablock with many travel resources (such as this little old blog you’re currently reading) and maps for you to easily use.

Download maps onto your phone when you have Wi-Fi so that even when you don’t have access to the internet, you’re not left lost in your destination.

So there we have it!

Those were some of my favourite eco-friendly travel products that I hope will not only benefit the planet but will also make your travels that little bit easier too.

27 Ultimate Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Travel Products

In this post, we explore the exciting and ever growing world of eco-friendly travel products.

When we travel, our attention is split much more than usual and that means we spend less time thinking about our individual impact on the planet. With the climate in crisis, it is the responsibility of each of us to ensure our negative impact on the environment is minimised. That means we should be making sustainable choices about the things we take with us on our adventures.

Not just for travel, for everyday life too

In this list of eco-friendly travel products, we’ve included things for your wellbeing, for your convenience and your style. Switching to more sustainable alternatives does take time, so we’d strongly encourage you to take your time and make switches some time before you intend to set off.

After all, sustainability should be a part of our everyday lives, not just when we’re on our travels.

Why switch to eco-friendly alternatives?

Many of the consumer products we buy every day have not been made with sustainability and eco-friendliness in mind. Many contain unnecessary plastic, much of which is virgin plastic, and many are non-recyclable. We cannot go on living like this. The planet is suffering as a result of human action.

We have to encourage mass change and one of the ways we can do that is by making conscious choices about the products that we buy.

Everything under one roof

We would encourage you to buy products directly from makers so that they can get the maximum benefit, but we appreciate that that isn’t always practical. For those occasions when you know you want to buy lots of eco-friendly travel products all at once, there are online stores that have everything (or at least most things) under one roof.

  • For those based in the UK, AndKeep is an excellent choice . They have a massive range (including their own branded stuff) and delivery is free for orders over £40 or a flat-rate of £2.49 for lower priced orders.
  • For those in the US, EarthHero is by far the best option we’ve come across so far. Their range is gigantic!

What better way to carry your eco-friendly travel products than in an eco-friendly bag (Wave)

BambuuBrush: an eco-friendly toothbrush that’s made from biodegradable bamboo (BambuuBrush)

Millions upon millions of plastic toothbrushes are thrown away around the world each year. They all end up in landfill and take hundreds of years to decompose. The absurdity of this wastefulness is heightened even further when you consider that there’s a very easy and cheap way to fix this problem.

Bamboo toothbrushes are now really easy to come by and really affordable. Below, we’ve picked out a few examples.

  • BambuuBrush: Inspired by seeing for themselves the negative impact of plastic pollution around the world, Tommie and Rebecca set up BambuuBrush to tackle the problem, one bamboo toothbrush at a time . 10% of every sale goes to the Humanitas charity. Worldwide delivery.
  • Truthbrush: Designed by an all female team dedicated to sustainability, their award winning bamboo toothbrush comes in a range of colours and in zero-waste packaging. UK delivery.

Suri is a carbon neutral electric toothbrush that ticks all the boxes

We were approached by Suri to try out their sustainable electric toothbrush and we jumped at the chance. Having now used it, we can safely recommend this to everyone.

Delivering 33,000 sonic vibrations a minute, this brush provides a great clean. But on top of this, the brush itself it made from fully biodegradable and recyclable materials. You can even post your used heads back to Suri in the provided compostable mailer. The product is certified carbon neutral and the company is a pending B Corp.

Avoid non-recyclable toothpaste tubes with ease with a range of products (Georganics)

Traditional toothpaste tubes are practically non-recyclable. Even if a toothpaste tube ends up in a recycling plant (and most don’t), the process of separating out the plastics is a costly and timely task.

Ditching traditional toothpaste for eco-friendly alternatives is now very straightforward. Toothpaste as you know it is available in glass jars and alternatives like powder and tablets are also available. We ourselves now use tablets that comes in biodegradable bags. They work brilliantly!

Below, we’ve found a few eco-friendly toothpaste alternatives.

  • NOICE: Highly-rated charcoal toothpaste delivered in a recyclable glass bottle . Provided you recycle the bottle and keep using the plastic pump, there’s zero waste. Delivery to the UK & France and the USA & Canada*.
  • Georganics: Offers a wide range of tablets and powders to replace traditional tubes of toothpaste , all delivered in recyclable glass jars. Also offers mouthwash tablets and natural chewing gum. Worldwide delivery.
  • Truthtabs: One box of Truthtabs should last you a month , making them great value. They contain fluoride, come in a wild mint flavour and are delivered to the UK in fully biodegradable packing.

Dental floss doesn’t have to be made of plastic and come in plastic packaging (Georganics)

Dental floss and interdentals are often made from plastic and are completely non-recyclable. Couple the fact that they’re generally single-use products and you have a horribly environmentally-unfriendly product.

Thankfully, there are alternatives available. It’s now possible to buy floss made from plants and reusable interdentals, some of which are made from bamboo. Below are a few examples.

  • Georganics: Floss made from cruelty-free and compostable corn-based material and delivered worldwide in fully zero-waste packaging.
  • &Keep Interdentals: You can find interdentals with bamboo handles in most sustainability shops. We use these from &Keep , which comes in a range of ISO standard sizes. International delivery available.

The plastic-free bath and shower bar scene is booming. Replace those plastic bottles now

When thinking about eco-friendly travel products, taking bars of body soap with you is a no brainer.

Not only do you instantly dispense with the single-use plastic bottles, but you also have a product that bypasses liquid allowances in hand luggage when flying. You also lose any risk of messy liquid soap explosions inside your luggage. We all know what that’s like.

We transitioned to using bars of body soap some time ago. It does take a bit of time to adjust to using them, but once you do, you never go back. You can find body soap anywhere, but try to make sure you stick to products that are vegan, cruelty-free, plastic-free, palm oil free and organic if you can.

  • Natural soaps by Jungle Culture: These handmade soaps are rich in organic essential oils and vegan friendly, cruelty-free, palm oil free and plastic-free . They even sell a reusable tin to put them in. Worldwide delivery from the UK.
  • Friendly Soaps: It’s very common to find a range of Friendly Soaps at sustainability and vegan markets and in zero-waste shops. We’ve tried out a few and they’re a reliable brand of vegan, cruelty-free soaps that come in plastic-free packaging. You can find a large range of Friendly soaps on &Keep, along with other brands .

Most well-known shampoo brands come in plastic bottles and are not cruelty-free. Time to ditch them

Similarly to body soap (above), ditching single-use plastic bottles and buying bars of shampoo and conditioner is a total no brainer for any eco-friendly traveller. Not only are they better for the environment, they don’t take up much room in your bag either.

  • &Keep: Here, you’ll find a range of different brands to try out . Finding a shampoo bar that works with your hair can take some trial and error, so be prepared to try different brands before you go away.
  • EarthHero: If you’re in the US, EarthHero have a huge range of hair care products for you to browse. Be mindful though of avoiding the plastic bottles.

Keep your pits fresh and dry with sustainable deodorant

Traditional spray deodorants often come in containers that utilise both plastic and metal. Most are recyclable, but some aren’t. This aside, it’s always better to reduce your use of such materials in the first instance, so sustainable deodorants are always a better choice for the environment. Most of the eco-friendly options come in either reusable containers or come wrapped in paper or cardboard.

Switching to solid deodorant can take some time as you find one that works for you. With this in mind, do make sure you’ve tried out your chosen deodorant before taking it away with you.

  • Wild Natural Deodorant: Aluminium free, cruelty-free & vegan deodorant with compostable, plastic free refills with 300,000 sold since their April 2020 launch. Delivery to most countries world-wide.
  • Fussy: An alternative to Wild is Fussy, who make their own refillable deodorant that’s free from aluminium, parabens and 100% vegan . You might have seen this brand on Dragon’s Den (the UK’s Shark Tank ).
  • AKT : If you want to avoid being tied into a refill system, AKT are a good option . Their vegan and cruelty-free deodorant comes in its own plastic-free and recyclable tube.
  • Two brands of sustainable deodorant you see a lot of in the UK are Salt of the Earth and Earth Conscious . You can view ranges from both of these brands, along with others, on &Keep .

Zero-waste safety razors are now easy to come by, but some are funkier than others (Jungle Culture)

There are lots of mail-order shaving products available these days and many of them make bold sustainability claims. Truth is though, many of these companies are still utilising plastic housing for their blades. Some offer a recycling scheme, but you normally have to save up around 10-12 blades before then have to post them back at your expense. Not very straightfoward.

The best option is the buy a razor that takes standard-sized recyclable razor blades. You can buy plastic-free handles that are either entirely metal or contain a mixture of bamboo and metallic parts. We’ve featured a couple of options below.

  • Jungle Culture: Part of a range of sustainable products, this unisex safety razor is entirely made of metal and takes standard, recyclable, double-edged steel blades (sold separately). There’s a range of lovely colours and it even comes with a jute travel bag. Worldwide delivery from the UK.
  • BamBaw: This metal razor handle comes with a blade to get you started and comes in a range of bright colours. We particular like the look of the rose gold variant.

All natural cotton buds are slowly becoming the norm worldwide (BambuuBrush)

In 2020, single-use plastic cotton buds were rightfully banned in England. Instead, consumers would have to opt for buds made from cardboard, but generally, these still end up in landfill. While you can buy cotton buds the are made from bamboo and are therefore biodegradable, we think the better option is to buy reusable swabs.

  • &Keep: You can bamboo cotton buds almost anywhere, but if you’re stocking up and you’re already buying stuff from &Keep, why not throw some into your basket .
  • BambuuBrush: Purveyors of bamboo toothbrushes also sell boxes of organic cotton and bamboo buds .

It’s tricky making sexual wellness products eco-friendly, but some companies are trying (Here We Flo)

It’s always a good idea to be prepared for a bit of romance and, thankfully, you can now do so without having too much of an impact on the planet.

To be fair, there’s still some work to do to make sexual wellness products more eco-friendly, but there are at least some companies who are trying their best. We’ve listed a couple of them below.

  • Hanx: There’s a range of sexual health products on offer here , but their core offering is vegan condoms made of 100% fair rubber latex and vegan, natural lube. UK Delivery.
  • Here We Flo: Carbon-neutral, vegan, cruelty-free and made from sustainably-sourced rubber latex, these condoms also give back with 5% of profits going to sustainability projects . Excellent!

Most sunscreens come in plastic bottles and many aren’t reef-safe. Other though buck the trend (Kri Skincare)

Coral reefs are facing all kinds of problems, so the last thing they needed was for sunscreen to harm them too. Alas, it’s been recently discovered that sunscreen and other skin products used by humans contain toxins that permanently alters the DNA of coral. Shocking!

Thankfully, there are reef-friendly options out there. These options tend to be all natural and therefore kinder to your skin, and they also tend to come packaged in sustainable packing.

  • Kri Skincare: We love companies that go above and beyond to do the right thing, and Sri is no exception. Their SPF 30 mineral sunscreen is cruelty-free and vegan and designed to be used daily. It comes in a fully recyclable glass jar with aluminium lid.
  • Shade All Natural Organic Sunscreen: This sunscreen contains just four natural ingredients , yet it protects your skin from a broad spectrum of damaging UVA and UVB rays. Comes in a reusable or recyclable tin. Contains beeswax. UK delivery only.

Ditch the chemical-infused spray in a plastic bottle and choose something much more natural

Similarly to many of the other eco-friendly travel products in this list, Insect Repellent is another one where avoiding single use plastic is the name of the game. Many spray-on repellents come in plastic bottles, or they come in metal canisters with plastic buttons and caps.

Avoid all this with creams/gels that come inside plastic-free, fully recyclable tins or insect repellent bars.

  • Khakibos Repel Gel: No need for chemicals – Khakibos has been used across the African continent as an effective insect repellent for hundreds of years . Citronella, Geranium and Lemon Eucalyptus combine with very effective results. It’s vegan-friendly and palm oil free. UK delivery.

Your feminine hygiene products needn’t come wrapped in plastic. (Here We Flo)

Traditional sanitary products are a plastic-fille nightmare. Not only do they contain plastic, but they’re normally wrapped in plastic too.

We get it, these types of products have to be hygienic, but that doesn’t necessarily mean plastic has to be involved. There are alternatives, as we will now demonstrate.

  • Here We Flo: Tampons and pads made from sustainable, organic bamboo & cotton which come inside plant-based and compostable wrappers. There’s also zero irritating, synthetic fibres, pesticide residues, bleach, dyes or fragrances. 5% of profits go to charities fighting period poverty and FGM. UK delivery.
  • TOTM: A range of products, including organic cotton tampons, pads, liners & zero-waste menstrual cups , with a very strong focus on ethics and sustainability. UK delivery only.
  • Flux Undies: Many travellers will find that the best option for them is period underwear. Flux makes super absorbent, eco-friendly period pants that keep you dry and comfortable all day. Delivery to the UK and worldwide.

Vitamins and supplements in plastic bottles are now easily avoidable (DR.VEGAN)

Vitamins are often not vegetarian and normally come inside plastic bottles and tubs. Thankfully, there are alternatives that are both vegan and packaged more sustainably.

  • DR.VEGAN: Plant-based supplements that tick all the boxes. Gluten-free, allergen-free and non-GMO, there’s a range of easy to swallow tablets available *, all of which comes inside plastic-free and fully compostable bags. Brilliant! Free UK delivery and worldwide delivery also available.

Reusable make-up remover pads/cloths are a great sustainable option

Surprisingly, many pre-packaged moist make-up remover cloths contain plastic (and of course, come wrapped in plastic too). Madness!

Something that works as equally well and also saves you some weight in your luggage is a reusable cloth and a bit of water. You can pick these up at supermarkets and shops that sell cosmetics and beauty products.

Protect your mobile phone with a case made from fully biodegradable wheat straw (Wave)

These days, having a mobile phone on you as you travel is absolutely essential. It’s a device to plan and book elements of your trip, pay for stuff and something you can use to capture memories. Protecting your phone is therefore really important.

While there are many cases on the market that are made from plastic, you can now also buy phone cases that are made from biodegradable material (wheat straw is a common one). We use Wave cases (see below) and totally recommend them, but there are other options for you to consider too.

  • Wave: We use these ourselves on our phones! Made from fully biodegradable wheat straw, these phone cases are grippy and durable and come in a range of great colours and designs *. Delivered for free (and carbon-neutral) to the UK and for a flat-rate of £5 to the rest of the world.
  • Pela Case: Thanks to rigorous marketing, Pela is almost certainly the most well-known eco-friendly phone case brand . There’s an extensive range of design and they’re all made from Flaxstic®, a blend of compostable bioplastic elastomer and flax straw. Worldwide delivery.

Canvas bags are essential eco-friendly travel products for your travels

We now don’t go anywhere without a set of canvas tote bags rolled up in our suitcase. They’re so useful for shopping and often, they double as dirty laundry bags. The fact they’re reusable and help us to avoid single-use plastic bags is an easy environmental win.

You can pick up tote bags really easily, but we recommend investing in really good quality bags from your favourite charities for added goodness.

  • Sumatran Orangutan Society bags: These organic cotton bags have great designs and a traceable ethical supply chain.
  • We Are All Human Here by Humanitas: This organic cotton tote designed by the Humanitas charity makes a fabulous statement.

Packing cubes help to keep your luggage organised

Packing cubes are a bit of a god-send for seasoned travellers. They effortlessly help to keep all your belongings organised and also help to make the best use of the space you have. It’s a win all round!

What isn’t a win however is the material that packing cubes are often made from. It’s typically virgin plastic. Yuck! Swerve these and invest in packing cubes that are instead made from fully recycled materials.

  • Both Patagonia and Kathmandu having packing cubes that are made from recycled plastic bottles. Both companies also go to great lengths for sustainability, with Kathmandu in particular being a certified B Corp.

For long trips, you’ll need laundry detergent. Thankfully, there are eco-friendly and lightweight options

Depending on the length of your trip, you’ll probably need laundry detergent. Occasionally, you’ll find washing machines with detergent built-in (very handy), but you can’t always rely on this. That’s why it’s handy to have some with you and thankfully, there are options that are lightweight, eco-friendly and plastic-free.

  • Tru Earth: The best option for laundry detergent on the go is a laundry sheet. There are plenty of brands that make these, but a common brand is Tru Earth. You can buy packs of Tru Earth’s hypoallergenic, vegan and paraben-free laundry sheets at &Keep .

Sunglasses made from recycled plastic are more eco-friendly than those made from virgin plastic

Sunglasses are an essential part of your travel kit, but often overlooked when taking eco-friendliness into consideration. Sunnies are something many of us keep for a long time and are therefore worth investing a good chunk of change on to get a high-quality, long-lasting product.

You can couple your investment with your sustainability demands by purchasing one of the following eco-friendly alternatives.

  • Coral Eyewear: Makes sustainable sunglasses and spectacles made from rescued fishing nets and recycled plastic, designed in the UK and handcrafted in Italy. Carbon-neutral and plastic-free delivery worldwide .

Eco-friendly clothing is now easy to find

The fashion industry is dogged by controversy, malpractice, exploitation and environmental neglect. Most consumers love a bargain and regretfully, this has led to a litany of issues resulting from cost-cutting.

Your choices really do make a difference and can drive positive change, so shop wisely. Below are a couple of suggestions for truly sustainable, green-washing-free fashion stores.

  • Kind Clothing: We love Kind Clothing’s range of awesome styles and designs . All their products are vegan and cruelty-free, come in plastic-free packaging and every purchase plants a tree too.
  • Vegan Outfitters: Let’s be honest, vegans love telling people that we’re vegan. Go the extra mile and wear your lifestyle choice with pride with Vegan Outfitter’s excellent range. We particularly like the Doodle T-Shirt .

A lightweight, plastic-free and reusable cutlery set is an essential eco-friendly travel product for your travels

Every traveller needs cutlery and chopsticks, regardless of their destination. Reject the free single-use plastic cutlery offered to you by food vendors and bring you own. Here are a few suggestions that we’ve found.

  • Bamboo cutlery by Jungle Culture: These gorgeous bamboo cutlery sets are completely chemical-free, plastic-free and organic and come in an organic cotton pouch. Worldwide delivery from the UK.
  • Cutlery by BambuuBrush: Reusable cutlery set consisting of a fork, knife and spoon that goes inside a canvas bag. 10% of every purchase goes to the Humanitas charity.

Every eco-friendly traveller should have a reusable water bottle in their luggage (Wave)

We were late to the game when it came to travelling with a water bottle. Now, we wouldn’t leave home without one. A water bottle not only helps to keep you hydrated, helps you to avoid sugary drinks and saves you money in the long-run, but it also helps you to avoid having to buy drinks in plastic bottles. Wins all round!

  • Wave: A 600ml metal water bottle that keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours . It’s BPA free, leakproof and delivered in recyclable packaging. Carbon-neutral delivery to the UK is free, while delivery elsewhere is just £5.

A reusable cup for hot drinks will help you to avoid using non-recyclable coffee cups (SoleCup)

Similarly to the water bottle (see above), having a reusable hot drinks cup in your luggage will help you to avoid using often completely non-recyclable coffee cups from your favourite coffee outlets. It’ll also help you to save a bit of cash long-term as many coffee shops offer a small discount for those who bring their own receptacles.

  • Solecup: We have one of these sustainable coffee cups and can vouch for their greatness . All the materials are either recyclable or biodegradable and the final products are sturdy and built to last. The cups even come in fully recyclable, plastic-free boxes. Yay! Buy from their Etsy shop for global shipping.

The plastic straw is thankfully (slowly) being outlawed around the world. Continue to shun them with confidence by bringing your own.

  • Bamboo and stainless steel straws by Jungle Culture: There’s a range of straws on offer here, made from both bamboo and stainless steel . The straws come inside cute bags made from jute. They even sell bamboo straws cleaners. Worldwide delivery from the UK.
  • BambuuBrush: Tommie and Rebecca sell washable and reusable straws made from both bamboo and stainless steel .

At home, these work an absolute treat and have helped us to entirely replace our use of cling film (plastic wrap) and tin foil. The food wraps we have are washable, reusable and do a great job at keeping our food fresh and clean. Just be mindful though of wraps made from bee’s wax – there’s no need for us to be pinching wax from bees when there are alternatives available.

Food wraps won’t take up much room or weight in your luggage, so it’s worth chucking some in. You can now pick up food wraps at local eco-stores or online from stores like &Keep (UK) or EarthHero (US) .

Packing Light Travel

50 Sustainable travel products to help you reduce waste

by Anne Betts | Mar 4, 2024 | Luggage and Packing , Packing Light Travel Gear | 10 comments

sustainable-travel-products

Updated March 4, 2024

Several reports in 2021 indicated that the pandemic has influenced people to travel more sustainably in the future. This includes packing sustainable travel products in our luggage, being mindful of what’s used and discarded along the way, and how to make conscious efforts to respect the environment of places we visit.

Sustainable packing begins with assessing which items in our travel bags help protect the planet and which ones pollute it. It requires identifying companies that promote longevity in their products, use plant-based and biodegradable materials and packaging, and help us produce as little waste as possible. With the expansion of the green market in recent years, packing sustainably is easier than it’s been in decades. Let’s use our travel funds to foster further development of eco-friendly products and practices.

While the following suggestions on sustainable travel products won’t result in zero-waste travel, hopefully, they’ll encourage a more intentional approach to reducing waste and eliminating more single-use items.

Table of Contents

1. Reusable mask

2. decent luggage with a solid warranty, 3. reusable water bottle, 4. collapsible reusable cup, 5. pocket shopping bag, 6. produce bags, 7. reusable bread bag, 8. reusable eating utensils, 9. reusable straw and cleaner, 10. four alternatives to ziploc® bags, 11. dry bags, 12. reusable shoe bag, 13. reusable 3-1-1 toiletry bag, 14. reusable travel-sized containers, 15. soap, shampoo, and conditioner bars, 16. skip the plastic soap case, 17. lotion bar, 18. natural deodorant, 19. natural moisturizer, 20. bamboo toothbrush, 21. toothpowder or tablets, 22. biodegradable and refillable dental floss, 23. biodegradable floss pick, 24. biodegradable hair ties, 25. reef-friendly sunscreen, 26. alternatives to traditional cotton buds, 27. biodegradable wipes, 28. reusable tissues or handkerchief, 29. reusable facial rounds, 30. leakproof panties, 31. reusable menstrual pads, 32. reusable panty liners, 33. tree-free toilet paper, 34. tree-free tissues, 35. merino clothing, 36. merino shoes, 37. hiking wool, 38. travel clothesline, 39. laundry detergent eco-strips, 40. laundry wash bag, 41. bamboo travel towel, 42. silk sleep sack, 43. use tech gear to promote sustainability, 44. compostable phone case, 45. pack your own headphones, 46. choose rechargeable batteries, 47. refillable pen, 48. pack what you need for a comfortable flight, 49. natural chewing gum, (i) pack light, (ii) work with a packing list, (iii) pack well in advance, (iv) pack clothes that you already have and love to wear, (v) become a list shopper, (vi) invest in quality, (vii) leave your trash at home, (viii) assemble a small macgyver kit for travel, (ix) buy secondhand, (x) pack just one book, (xi) insist on green practices, (xii) collect trash, (xiii) buy local, (xiv) expand your eco-friendly vocabulary, (xv) make small choices that matter, (xvi) spread the word, (xvii) take small steps to start.

A mask may continue to be a necessary piece of kit for many years to come, and the earth cannot sustain the devastating impact of the environmental damage caused by disposable masks. Research by OceansAsia estimates that over 1.5 billion single-use face masks entered oceans in 2020, resulting in as much as 6,240 metric tons of marine plastic pollution.

Skip the disposable variety. There are many companies and Etsy sellers that have created a host of reusable face masks for non-medical use. For a top-of-the-line mask, check out Sonovia. The Sonomask Pro is rated as more effective than the N-95 mask. Tests conducted by Vismederi Textyle, a leading CE-approved laboratory, revealed that Sonovia’s fabrics eliminate Delta variant particles with over 99.95% effectiveness. It’s pricey but effective, and it’s the most comfortable mask I’ve ever worn.

One feature I appreciate in Osprey products is the “All Mighty Guarantee.’ This translates into a lifetime warranty where Osprey will repair any damage or defect free of charge. If the bag can’t be fixed, it’ll be replaced.

On my return to Canada from New Zealand, I tested Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee. My Farpoint 40 had fallen off the back of a motorcycle, suffering a nasty case of road rash. I shipped my damaged pack to Osprey’s partner in Montreal and several weeks later received a brand-new bag. My old bag didn’t end up in a landfill. Recoverable parts of damaged and worn-out bags are used to make functional repairs to other bags. It’s a win for consumers and a win for the environment.

  • Is the Osprey warranty any good? It’s so good, I’m now a customer for life .

A refillable water bottle is a no-brainer; it belongs on every packing list. The challenge lies in keeping it clean and choosing what works best given your travel plans and the ability of the water bottle to work with the rest of your gear. Does it need to fit in the cup holder of a vehicle or the side pocket of a backpack? If it needs to be clipped to a crossbody purse or day bag, does it need to have a loop, handle, reinforced grommet, or carabiner? Does it need to purify water in places where tap water may not be safe to drink?

An advantage of a foldable water bottle is that it takes up hardly any space when empty. It can be useful as a primary water bottle or as a secondary source of hydration when one water bottle isn’t enough. The Vapur Eclipse Flexible Water Bottle has a capacity of 1 litre / 34 fl oz and folds down to a compact package weighing 3.1 oz / 88 g when empty. An integrated carabiner allows attachment to a bag or belt loop. It also comes in a capacity of 0.7 l / 23.6 fl oz.

When choosing a rigid water bottle, some are too wide to fit in a vehicle’s cup holder. Others are too tall or too narrow to fit snugly in the side pocket of a daypack and tend to fall out.

When travelling to those parts of the world where the tap water isn’t drinkable, a reusable water bottle with a built-in water purifier/filter is an alternative option to plastic water bottles that aren’t likely to be recycled. I like the self-cleaning LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis that allows access to safe drinking water from any source… tap, puddles, lakes, or streams. It uses UV-C technology to bathe the inside of the bottle with UV light to clean the bottle and sterilize the contents.

If you love your daily tea or coffee, carry a collapsible, reusable cup. Or take a load off and enjoy it in a proper cup or mug while soaking up the atmosphere and complimentary Wi-Fi of a local coffee shop.

While advances are being made in recycling cups and lids, the vast majority end up as litter or in landfills and oceans. And it may be some time before the edible or compostable variety becomes commonplace.

Mine is a Stojo Pocket Cup with a capacity of 12 oz / 355 ml. Expanded, it’s 5 in / 12 cm tall, 2 in / 5 cm collapsed, and weighs 150 g / 5 oz. (The 24 oz / 710 ml size comes with a straw.) It’s more portable than a non-collapsible cup and easy to collapse and bring to the extended position. The lid is secure and leakproof. It’s constructed of food-grade silicone, with a BPA-free lid and heat sleeve. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe. I find it retains the coffee aroma, so it’s best kept for the intended use (e.g., as a coffee or tea or soup cup).

Find a permanent place in your day bag for a reusable pocket shopping bag. I’ve found in the past that if it’s not in my day bag, chances are I’ll need to pay for a reusable shopping bag or end up with a plastic bag (where they’re still available). My machine washable ChicoBag rePETe is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles and other recycled components for its carabiner, cording, and cord lock. The bag folds into its own little sack, and its lightweight carabiner can clip to a purse or belt loop. It’s rated to carry 11 kg (25 lb). I’ve had it for years, and it has earned its rightful place as one of my travel essentials. Buying fresh, local food in markets invariably results in less waste and fewer emissions associated with transportation over long distances. Chances are there won’t be any annoying stickers that need to be removed prior to composting. It’s also an opportunity to interact with the producers of the food, eliminate the ‘middlemen’ in between, and keep travel funds in communities we love to support. Shopping at local markets is easier with a few reusable, lightweight mesh produce bags and a pocket shopping bag. In grocery stores, they’ll help you refuse produce wrapped in Styrofoam or plastic and skip plastic produce bags. They weigh next to nothing, consume very little space, and double as a strainer when washing fruit and vegetables. Mine came as a pack of 12 containing three different sizes. When I pack a set of three bags (large, medium, and small), the combined weight is only 64 g / 2.3 oz.

For travels that involve housesitting or staying in self-contained accommodation, a reusable bread bag is handy. It helps avoid plastic bags, paper packaging, twist ties, and plastic bread clips when purchasing bread from a bakery, farmers’ market, and certain grocery stores.

Refuse disposable cutlery. When ordering takeout, ask that none be placed in the bag. Carry your own chopsticks, cutlery, spork , or wallet-sized flatware. They’ll help you avoid the disposable stuff or utensils where the cleanliness is suspect.

I’m a fan of the Gosun stainless steel flatware . When not in use, it collapses to fit in a wallet-sized case.

Sea to Summit produces a collapsible plate and bowl . The X-Plate has a rigid cut-resistant base and weighs 4.9 oz / 140 g. The X-Bowl weighs 2.8 oz / 80 g. Both are made of food-grade silicone.

Or perhaps a collapsible set of containers with a leakproof lid is a better fit for your ability to prepare and pack snacks and meals in advance or bring leftovers from eating out in restaurants.

Plastic straws suck. According to National Geographic, US residents use 500 million straws every day. Some suggest that straws are unnecessary, that we use them out of habit, or because a drink comes with one.

However, some people use straws as a matter of hygiene to avoid contact with the rim of a cup, can, or bottle. Others prefer that their teeth not come in contact with the liquid because they’re sensitive or susceptible to staining. For some people with physical disabilities, straws play an essential role in helping them eat and drink. For others, it’s a matter of convenience to avoid reapplying lipstick. If you’re a ‘straw person’ or expect to drink from a coconut, there are reusable metal, glass, or bamboo options. A telescopic version , with a collapsible cleaning brush, comes in a small carrying case that packs easily in a day bag.

When ordering a drink, add “no straw, please” as a matter of habit. Make it as common as ordering a drink without ice where the water quality is suspect.

Ziploc® bags are so handy that it’s hard to give them up. Thankfully, there are many viable alternatives.

There are lots of reusable zip-top bags on the market. I’ve used E-Z Seal Extra Thick Reusable Storage Bags. They’re washable, leakproof, and safe for storing food. Use them as sandwich bags or for supplements, trail mix, pastries, fruit, or leftovers. Wash them out, and they dry overnight. Or use them as packing organizers for smaller items that are difficult to find when allowed to roam free in a bag. One with a pre-moistened tablet towel (See #27 below) has a permanent place in my daypack and in-flight personal bag. Stasher is a popular choice, but the one I bought was much more expensive and is four times heavier than an E-Z Seal bag of a similar size. Beeswax clings easily to a bowl, sandwich, or opened roll of Tums. It’s a sustainable alternative to plastic cling wrap and Ziploc® bags because it’s made of natural ingredients and is compostable and biodegradable. A pack of a few different sizes offers alternatives to single-use plastic.

There are many sellers on Etsy who make pouches to serve a host of packing needs. Cloth pouches with an easy-to-clean water-resistant inside liner are ideal for storing snacks and sandwiches. Or ChicoBag makes a reusable snack bag of rePETe fabric made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

Reusable packing organizers (folders, cubes, envelopes, compression sacs, and a host of others) help organize, protect, and compress (in some cases). They’re functional and reusable and help wean us off plastic bags with a limited life span.

  • Join the carry-on travel movement: pack light and tight with packing organizers

Dry bags keep moisture out and keep stuff dry. But they can also keep moisture in and protect surrounding items. There’s no need to wrap damp or dirty shoes in plastic; use a dry bag. If a swimsuit or travel towel hasn’t had a chance to dry on a travel day, pack it in a dry bag. A dry bag works well as a dirty laundry hamper to lock in the skunk of soiled clothing.

  • 10 Reasons to travel with dry bags

reusable-waterproof-dry-bag

A popular packing tip seen on the internet is to use a shower cap or plastic grocery bag as a shoe bag. Both options are flimsy, of limited use, and far from sustainable. Instead, use a washable cloth bag for clean footwear and a dry bag for damp, dirty shoes. A dry bag seals in the dampness and odour, cleans easily, and is reusable.

  • Functional and lightweight shoe bags for the packing light traveller

A 3-1-1 bag is the term used in some countries to describe the container needed to bring liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes in the cabin of aircraft.

For this purpose, some airports offer zip-top bags at security checkpoints. They’re flimsy and incapable of coping with the rigours of travel. They suffer wear and tear and eventually need to be discarded. A durable, reusable, and washable 3-1-1 bag is easier on the planet.

There are several on the market. Mine is a Tom Bihn 3D Organizer Cube . When searching for a reusable 3-1-1 bag, look for one with a built-in swivel hook to hang on a towel rack, shower curtain rod, tree branch, hook, or bed frame.

  • 18 Tips on organizing a 3-1-1 bag for toiletries and cosmetics

Restrictions on quantities of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes contribute to plastic pollution. Millions of people buy travel-sized toiletries and discard the containers after use. Others rely on using hotel toiletries in travel-sized containers.

My suggestion? Only buy travel-sized containers of hand sanitizer, lotion, or shampoo if you plan to refill them with your favourite products. An advantage of off-the-shelf travel-sized toiletries is that the containers are usually functional and leakproof. They’re designed to work with the products inside. This means that under normal conditions, the lid doesn’t stick, the nozzle doesn’t clog, and the lid provides a leakproof seal.

Another advantage is that the manufacturer’s label clearly distinguishes the contents and saves making a label for products that look the same.

Or repurpose discarded containers such as prescription bottles, contact lens cases, and anything else having potential. Or invest in small, durable containers of various sizes and functions. Each one needs to be less than 100 ml / 3.4 oz for carry-on travel.

Then, decant from larger containers before leaving home. This is especially important for travellers with sensitivities and special needs or those loyal to specific products. You’ll

  • save money because they’re easy to refill and reuse, and you’re filling them with products you already have
  • use the contents with confidence because you’re using tried-and-true products from home
  • not waste valuable travel time searching for products that meet your needs.

Keep in mind that toiletries have expiry and best-before dates, so build this into your purchasing and packing habits.

  • Are you travelling with expired toiletries? Avoid doing so with these 14 tips

There are several compelling reasons to choose solid over liquid products.

  • As solids, they circumvent the restrictions on liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. This frees up space in a 3-1-1 bag.
  • There are no leakages that can cause serious (and expensive) damage.
  • Solids are usually lighter than their liquid counterparts.
  • They last longer. There’s less likelihood of using more than is needed.
  • Sometimes it’s difficult to squeeze the last of the liquid from a bottle of shampoo or conditioner. Solids can be used until the last swipe or combined with a fresh bar.
  • Many are sold naked or packed in compostable paper. This helps decrease the amount of plastic waste typically associated with beauty products.
  • Many are made of natural ingredients. Harsh chemicals aren’t being introduced into the environment, making them ideal for camping and places without effective wastewater systems.

Check out what’s available at local markets. If you’re purchasing online and looking for recommendations, one of my favourite soap bars is Dr Bronner’s 18-in-one Hemp Pure Castile Soap in lavender. It’s multipurpose and environmentally friendly, with no synthetic preservatives, fragrances, thickeners, or foaming agents. It can be used as body wash, face wash, shampoo, laundry soap, dish soap, or shaving cream. It lathers beautifully.

In shampoo bars, my preferences are Éthique (Sweet & Spicy Volumizing) , etee (Lavender/Chamomile), J.R. Liggett’s (Original Formula) , and Nature’s Aid (Moisturizing Mango and Tangerine).

shampoo-bars-selection

LUSH is a popular choice. I loved the shampoo bar Honey I washed my Hair but discontinued use when I realized it contained SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and other synthetic chemicals. For an in-depth article on LUSH, see How Ethical Is Lush Cosmetics. Holly Rose Investigates .

When my hairdresser suggested my hair could benefit from not shampooing it every day, I switched to doing so every few days, depending on the climate and my level of activity. This practice has certainly extended the life of my shampoo and reduced the amount of water used when showering.

While not a single-use product, a plastic soap bar case may not be the best choice for those who travel with a soap, shampoo, or conditioner bar.

Check out the remarkable Matador FlatPack Soap Bar Case . It functions as a dry bag to keep moisture inside. Slip a wet bar inside, and it miraculously dries out within a few hours. An added advantage is that as the solid bar decreases in size, the soft-sided case does the same and takes up less space.

  • A Matador Flatpak Soap Bar Case Review for Travellers

Another option is a lightweight tin. LUSH has square, oval, and circular containers; the circular tin from Nature’s Aid fits all their circular shampoo and conditioner bars. However, I prefer small wet-bag pouches made with PUL fabric (Polyurethane Laminate). Mine are from the online marketplace, Etsy.

Look for lotion in plastic-free containers. As with other solid products, lotion bars offer many advantages. My favourite to date is the ClimbOn Lotion Bar (Cedar). It’s in a compostable paper tube and contains 100% natural ingredients from plants and beeswax. It works best as a hand lotion and on dry spots such as elbows and feet, but also soothes burns, rashes, and stings.

Crystal deodorant isn’t for everyone, but it works for me. Some people suggest a trial period to give the body a chance to adjust. Crystal takes up very little space and isn’t affected by airline restrictions on liquids, aerosols, gels, and powders. Just wet the top before each use, and it lasts for many months of daily use.

  • Go natural. But does crystal deodorant work?

For an all-natural cream product, I like No Pong Original in a 35 g / 1.2 oz recyclable tin. Its ingredients are Coconut Oil, Baking Soda, Corn Starch, Beeswax, and a proprietary blend of 100% pure, Canadian-certified organic essential oils. Produced in both Australia and Canada, No Pong deodorant applies easily and is very effective.

Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer, rejuvenating and rebuilding healthy tissue to improve texture and elasticity. Hence the skin is firmer and more radiant. This multipurpose product naturally penetrates deep within the skin, promoting the healing of sores, cuts, rashes, bruises, frostbite, insect bites, and athlete’s foot. It’s also a natural makeup remover and shaving cream.

Look for a clear aloe vera product with high aloe vera content, few safe preservatives, and no alcohol, fragrances, or colouring.

One estimate is that around 3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year. The American Dental Association recommends getting a new toothbrush every three to four months. Over a lifetime, that’s a lot of discarded plastic.

Consider switching to a biodegradable bamboo alternative . Bamboo is a highly sustainable material. It’s abundant, grows quickly, and requires very little water and no fertilizer or pesticides. Less energy is used in its production, resulting in a much lower ecological footprint than plastic.

One problem with toothpaste is that it’s tubed in plastic. In the interests of packing light, I used to stock up on 18-ml travel-sized tubes that barely lasted 40 brushings. No more.

It took experimenting with tooth powders and tablets to arrive at my current and affordable favourite: GloBoid Toothpaste Tablets with Fluoride . One tablet foams beautifully and my teeth feel clean after each brushing.

Refillable dental floss containers are made of bamboo, glass, or stainless steel. Dental Lace has its compostable mulberry silk dental floss in a refillable and recyclable travel-friendly glass container. I love the compact size of the Dental Lace container, but I find the silk floss tends to shred and break without too much effort. Bamboo charcoal floss is much stronger and more durable.

Interdental picks are effective for removing unwanted debris between teeth. Unfortunately, most are made of plastic and designed for single use. For a biodegradable alternative, there are several on the market. Handles tend to be made of cornstarch or other plant-based materials, and floss of bamboo, mulberry, or nylon. I use the EcoFlosser from Clean Idea. The nylon thread is shred-resistant, and the ergonomically designed handle permits access to hard-to-reach areas. It’s surprisingly strong and highly durable. In fact, I carry a small supply and reuse them. They rinse well in water and can be easily sterilized using a denture-cleansing tablet.

The Canadian company Kooshoo makes a biodegradable plastic-free hair elastic made of organic cotton and natural rubber.

Most off-the-shelf sunscreen products contain ingredients that contribute to the destruction of coral reefs .

Unless you’re purchasing sunscreen in a jurisdiction where ‘reef-friendly’ is regulated, it’s important to read the label for reef-harming ingredients such as oxybenzone, octocrylene, parabens, and triclosan. Also, look for ‘non-nano’ as this means that there are no nano-size particles that can be ingested by corals and disrupt the marine ecosystem.

One of the attractive features of All Good SPF 50 Zinc Sunscreen Butter is that it contains only six ingredients (25% Zinc Oxide, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Calendula Flowers infused with Organic Jojoba Oil, and Vitamin E). It comes in a handy 28 g / 1 oz biodegradable can.

LastSwab is a reusable, sustainable, and sanitary alternative to cotton swabs, buds, and Q-Tips. The rigid nylon core has a medical-grade silicone bud at each end that’s easily cleaned with soap and water. The swab is housed in a corn-based storage case and is tested to manage 1,000 uses.

If you’re hooked on traditional single-use cotton buds, choose ones with paper stems instead of plastic. Organyc uses organic cotton in their buds and cotton balls.

Tablet towels can be an effective alternative to wipes. The compressed fibre towels are small, lightweight, and compact, with a diameter of 2 cm / 0.75 in and a depth of half that. Look for ones made of bamboo; they’re more sustainable than those from wood pulp. When introduced to a little water, they explode into a compostable, durable washcloth. Carry a pre-moistened towel in a reusable zip-top silicone bag, and several dry towels in the event they’re needed to wipe down a wet surface, clean up spills, or use as a handkerchief or emergency toilet paper.

A handkerchief or reusable tissue is one of those multipurpose items that’s an eco-friendly alternative to wipes and paper tissues.

The paper-and-pulp industry is the third-largest industrial emitter of global warming gasses. In the United States alone, around 8,000,000 trees are cut each year to make facial tissues. The removal of trees leads to a loss of wildlife habitat by reducing available food and shelter. It also removes the effect the trees have of cleaning carbon emissions, producing breathable oxygen, and slowing the pace of climate change.

Thanks to Kleenex, cloth handkerchiefs have all but disappeared from everyday life. They’re still available, and at thrift shops, you might be fortunate to find some fancy hand-embroidered ones with a long history.

LastObject (the company that produces LastSwab) makes LastTissue , a set of six reusable tissues made of 100% organic cotton and stored in a durable travel-friendly silicone case. Clean tissues are separated from used tissues by a silicone barrier. According to the company, the tissues can be washed up to 520 times each at 140°F (60°C).

For a makeup routine that involves disposable facial wipes, there are reusable options made of organic cotton or bamboo.

My machine washable rounds come from Etsy seller Lily Pads Reusable Products. In addition, LastObject offers LastRound , reusable facial rounds in a handy silicone case.

Leakproof panties can be a game-changer for those who menstruate, perspire profusely, or experience urine leakage or vaginal discharge. Commercially produced menstrual products such as tampons, pads, and associated packaging generate a lot of waste. According to Friends of the Earth , a person who menstruates is predicted to discard roughly 400 pounds (181 kilograms) of these products during their lifetime. The Canadian company Ellza claims that 12 billion pads and 7 million tampons are discarded annually, and that a sanitary pad takes 450 years to decompose.

Leakproof panties offer one way to reduce our environmental footprint and make travel more accessible for those who require leakproof underwear. My Knix Super Leakproof Bikini hold up to 8 teaspoons of liquid, the equivalent of eight regular tampons. They’re comfortable, invisible under clothing, and provide me with the confidence to deal with light bladder leaks. My Ellza Leakproof Elegance panties are just as comfortable, and absorb the equivalent of four pads. At the back, the leakproof lining extends all the way to the elasticized band.

Friends of the Earth reports that conventional sanitary pads contain up to ninety per cent plastic. According to the Marine Conservation Society, much of this waste ends up in our oceans. The organization reports that, on average, 4.8 pieces of menstrual waste are uncovered on each 100-metre stretch of beach clean-ups. This amounts to four pads, panty liners, backing strips, and at least one tampon and applicator.

Making the switch to a reusable menstrual product is made easier with the Trade to Aid reusable sanitary pads . The organization is committed to ending period poverty around the globe. For each purchase, a pack is donated to someone in need, and profits are diverted to menstrual education programs in West Africa that help keep girls in school and women in the workforce. Each pack of reusable sanitary pads contains two light-flow pads, two medium-flow pads, two heavy-flow pads, and one waterproof wet bag.

Panty liners have many advantages, including feeling fresh during long travel days, and protection from urine leakage, vaginal discharge, and menstrual-related issues. These situations, and more, are of concern to travellers.

There are commercial varieties, some of which are oozing in plastic, but thankfully, there are alternatives. My washable panty liners made of organic cotton are not only comfortable, but they remain in place with their snap closure, unlike some commercial products with an adhesive backing. There are plenty of sellers on Etsy; I chose Lily Pads Reusable Products.

reusable-panty-liners

If single-use panty liners are preferred, natracare and Organyc offer a better choice than many commercial products. Their biodegradable and compostable organic cotton liners are plastic-free and packed in a cardboard carton. If you’re looking for a travel-friendly reusable pouch to protect panty liners, place a made-to-order request on Etsy.

Prepare a DIY pack of emergency toilet paper for those occasions when toilet paper isn’t available. There are lots of brands that use bamboo in their products, a highly sustainable ingredient that decomposes faster than paper. I chose three-ply Silk ‘n Soft from True Earth ; it’s absorbent and durable, and safe for septic and RV systems.

It’s pleasing to see more bamboo products on the market, including travel packs of bamboo tissues . When using them as emergency toilet paper, place them in the bin provided. They don’t dissolve as well as toilet paper and can wreak havoc on a system.

Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibres — all of which are forms of plastic — now make up about 60 per cent of the material used in clothing worldwide. When these fabrics are laundered, tiny microfibres are released in varying degrees depending on the fabric. It’s estimated that 35% of microplastics in the marine environment are fibres from synthetic clothing. Choosing natural fibres over synthetics can make a significant and necessary difference in protecting our waterways and oceans. Merino wool is an all-natural sustainable product harvested from merino sheep. Because wool biodegrades in marine environments, it doesn’t contribute to microplastic pollution. Its other attributes make it a popular choice for packing light travellers.

  • It’s cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather.
  • Merino is soft and doesn’t itch like other woollen garments.
  • It’s lightweight and doesn’t demand a lot of space.
  • Merino clothing is perfect for layering up and down. When the temperature drops, wear an extra layer. When it warms up during the day, remove a layer and stuff it into a day bag.
  • It’s easy to assemble a few base layers and a couple of mid-layers that work well together in a capsule wardrobe.
  • It dries quickly.
  • Its odour-resistant properties are legendary. For example, the same pair of merino socks can be worn for several days without washing, so there’s never a need to pack more than two pairs. The same holds for base-layer shirts that can be worn several times without washing. This translates into packing less and clothes last longer because of fewer washes.

The company Allbirds makes merino shoes in a range of styles and colours. My Allbirds Wool Runners are lightweight and comfortable, pack well, and my choice of the solid dark grey colour blends nicely with a capsule wardrobe. Besides the key ingredient of all-natural, sustainable merino wool, recycled plastic bottles are used in laces, and castor bean oil increases the natural content of insoles. Packaging comes from 90% recycled cardboard. It’s possible to wash them on a delicate cycle, then air dry. The company’s 30-day no-questions-asked exchange/return policy is hard to beat.

  • Allbirds Merino Wool Runners Review of a Travel Favourite

all-birds-wool-runners

It was on the third day of hiking New Zealand’s Banks Track that another hiker introduced me to hiking wool . She showed me how to wrap the all-natural merino product around and between toes and over other sensitive areas. It reduced the chafing and soreness I’d experienced on previous days and it has earned a permanent place in my blister-prevention toolkit.

A travel clothesline encourages regular hand washing, a more sustainable choice than washing (and drying) by machine. It also promotes packing light. Travel clotheslines are lightweight and take up very little space. My favourite type is braided, with hooks at both ends to loop back into the clothesline when attached to fixed objects. My Design Go Go clothesline comes with suction cups that I don’t find useful. Socks or panties can be slipped inside one of the braids so clothespins aren’t needed. Other laundry can be hung over the line or a couple of the braids used to advantage.

When staying in hostels, I ask for a lower bunk where it’s easy to set up a travel clothesline. If there isn’t a privacy curtain, my travel clothesline is pressed into service to create one, with my pashmina and laundry to create a privacy screen.

If you expect to use a washing machine during your travels, an eco-strip might fit the bill. Eco-strips are lightweight, compact, and very easy to pack. If you choose a slightly scented variety, they’ll keep your packed luggage smelling fresh. Tru Earth laundry strips are a concentrated eco-friendly detergent, minus the water. A single strip weighs just 3 g / 0.1 oz but packs the same punch as 40 g / 1.4 oz of liquid or powdered detergent.

Small and delicate items will last longer if they’re washed in a laundry bag. LastObject’s laundry bag is made of 100% organic cotton. The company claims the bag can be washed 500 times or more at 60 degrees (Celsius, or 140 Fahrenheit). The bag is perfect for washing reusable tissues, handkerchiefs, panty liners, and facial rounds.

Forget the highly recommended microfibre travel towels. They’re made of 100% plastic. During washing, they shred microplastics that are too small to be filtered out by waste treatment plants, so they end up in our waterways and oceans where they destroy marine animals and the environment.

There are more sustainable alternatives. Check out the Pangea Bamboo Towel . I bought my pocket towel through a Kickstarter project and it has served me well when staying in hostels. I’ve tried microfibre towels, but they come a distant second when considering weight, space, absorbency, comfort, and ease of use. The Pangea is naturally antibacterial, biodegradable, absorbs three times more water and dries two times faster than a microfibre towel.

The company ties purchases to beach and river cleanups. Every towel purchase results in the collection of 2 lb / 0.9 kg of trash.

A silk sleep sack works as a sleeping bag liner, a natural cocoon of bedding when the cleanliness of sleeping accommodation might be questionable. Silk is one of the most sustainable fibres; it’s renewable, biodegradable, and uses less water and energy during manufacturing than many other fibres. Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk on the market. Not only is silk sustainable, but it’s lightweight, breathable, packable, compact, and quick-drying — perfect features for hikers and carry-on travellers. It offers a measure of warmth in cold conditions or relief when it’s warm. In 42 degrees (Celsius) in Morocco (as in 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit), my silk sleep sack protected me from biting insects yet offered a cool covering. After much research, I purchased my silk sleep sack in 2013 from the family-owned New Zealand company Silk Living , producers of the Silksak . The YHA version has an insert that acts as a pillowcase and weighs just 108 g / 3.8 oz. Tech gear is far from sustainable, but smartphones and tablets can be used to lighten the load and eliminate or reduce our reliance on eco-unfriendly gear and products.

When searching for charging cables, lighten your load by choosing a minimalist cable with several attachments. The inCharge X is a 6-in-1 charging cable that’s small enough to carry in a pocket or attach to a keyring.

For example, there are many applications (apps) that can help reduce reliance on paper products. Google Maps is more versatile than a physical map and provides real-time information on public transportation routes and schedules. A word-processing app such as MS Word can replace a journal, and apps such as Overdrive and Kindle used for audiobooks and digital books. Store tickets and itineraries in an itinerary management app (I like Kayak ‘Trips’) and use other apps to, for example, replace a physical compass, flashlight, or calculator.

The Canadian company Pela makes a range of compostable tech accessories such as cases for phones and tablets, pockets to attach to phone cases, phone grips , and Smartwatch and Fitbit bands. They also make sunglasses. Thanks to flax straw and plant‑based biopolymer materials, the products can be tossed in a backyard compost.

The cheap earbuds distributed by airlines are of such poor quality that they’ll inevitably end up in the trash. Besides, they’re packaged in a plastic bag and many airlines charge for them.

Pack your own. I prefer in-ear headphones. They take up less space than on-ear and over-the-ear headphones, and I’ve found two Bose brands comfortable for sleeping. Unfortunately, Bose no longer makes the SoundTrue Ultra, but the SoundSport are almost as good. Their noise-cancelling cousins, Bose QuietComfort 20 , are my go-to favourites for long flights.

Rechargeable batteries are better for the environment because they can be used many more times than the typical non-rechargeable, throw-away types. But this is only if they’re used to their full potential. According to Yale Climate Connections , if a battery is recharged 50 times, its overall benefit to the environment is significant. It also means taking advantage of recycling centres. Unfortunately, many disposable batteries end up in landfills. The Sierra Club estimates that around 5 billion disposable batteries are sold in the United States every year, but less than 10 percent are recycled.

Where you have a choice, choose travel products such as digital cameras, electric toothbrushes, and flashlights with rechargeable batteries. After cell phones, flashlights are one of the biggest consumers of battery energy. A small, lightweight, rechargeable LED flashlight is indispensable for navigating at night, finding something in the dark, or checking dark corners for missing items.  Sure, phones have flashlight apps, but sometimes a flashlight is the better option. I like the compact size of the Olight I1R2 Pro 180 Lumens Rechargeable EDC Key Chain Flashlight.

A pen is a travel essential for signing or completing documents. Some authorities require that blue or black ink be used. Refillable fountain pens aren’t practical for travel, and many ballpoint pens aren’t refillable. Pilot makes a refillable product from recycled bottles. The B2P (Bottles to Pen) product is retractable, comfortable to hold, writes smoothly, and doesn’t clog or leak.

It’s unlikely that the plastic packaging on blankets and pillows distributed on planes gets recycled. To deal with fluctuations in temperature, pack a light shawl or pashmina, and a light sweater. Leave the blanket and pillow in their plastic packaging and use one as a cushion for back support. Another option is to pack a pillowcase cover and stuff it with the plastic-covered item or clothing. My pillowcase cover from Etsy seller ellebee tree works for me.

Many brands of chewing gum use polymers, synthetic plastics that don’t biodegrade. Improperly discarded gum litters streets and sidewalks, or makes its way into waterways, collecting toxins along the way. If you chew gum to deal with fluctuations in air pressure during a flight, pack a natural, biodegradable variety. There are a few on the market, including Glee and Chicza . For use as a breath freshener, consider switching to mints.

50. Other tips on sustainable travel products and packing

It will save on baggage fees, reduce emissions, lessen the chance of damage and loss, and increase your ability to walk or use public transportation. Packing light is better for you and the planet. According to Sustainable Travel International, lightening your luggage by 15 pounds (7 kilograms) decreases your emissions by about 80 pounds (36 kilograms) on a ten-hour flight. If 200 passengers on a plane all packed light, it could eliminate 16,000 pounds (7257 kilograms) of CO2.

In another example, Finnair calculated that if each passenger shaved 5 kilograms from their luggage, the total reduction, based on the airline’s traffic, could save almost 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions — the equivalent of 400 round trip flights from Helsinki to Paris.

A packing list helps avoid overpacking. It also lessens the chance of leaving something behind and needing to purchase a duplicate of what’s already owned.

Packing with time to spare offers a comfortable window to evaluate how sustainable, reusable, and wasteful each packed item may be.

Consider assembling a ‘travel wardrobe’ and set it aside for travel. It certainly makes for an easier packing experience when you can reach for tried-and-true pieces that mix and match well with each other.

The same applies to other possessions. Use what you have. There’s no need, for example, to buy a wooden comb when your lightweight plastic one has served you well, cleans easily, takes up very little space, and has several years of life left in it.

If you need to buy travel gear, add it to a shopping list. Chances are you’ll be able to take advantage of sales such as Earth Day and Cyber Monday. The other advantage is items can be combined and shipped together. This decreases the carbon footprint per ordered and shipped product. It results in fewer transport emissions and less packaging.

Seek out high-quality, sturdy gear that won’t need to be replaced on a longer trip. Then, look after it. Depending on a ‘buy-it-there’ approach to packing can result in a quick purchase of a cheap poncho, umbrella, or clothing that are easy on the purse but hard on the environment. The same applies to flip-flops, a major source of pollution. From footwear to backpacks to travel clothes, look for things that will last.

  • Six disadvantages of the ‘buy-it-there’ approach to packing light

Ignore packing tips that suggest taking old underwear and other clothing pieces and discarding when they’ve outlived their usefulness. Repurpose, reuse, or recycle these items at home. Otherwise, they will probably end up as garbage at your destination because you’re unfamiliar with recycling practices or they don’t exist. We’re guests in another land with an obligation to be responsible, eco-friendly, and environmentally conscious travellers.

Include a needle and thread, some duct tape, and anything else that will allow you to repair gear on the move.

  • Travelling with duct tape: 30 practical uses

If what’s in your bag comes up short for the weather conditions or certain types of activities, visit a thrift shop and support a worthy cause in the process. It can be fun, affordable, and sustainable.

If you can’t embrace the practice of reading a digital book, pack just one print book and plan to trade with other travellers or use book exchanges. Do the same with guidebooks. If carrying a physical guidebook is your preference, leave it behind for others to use and enjoy.

When staying in accommodation without detailed instructions, bins, and containers that promote composting and recycling, bring it to the attention of hosts, hostel staff, or hotel management. When consumers insist on green products and eco-friendly solutions, the market will respond accordingly.

Become a trash hero or join the Adventure Bag Crew . Joining a clean-up activity is a worthwhile activity and an opportunity to meet other like-minded travellers and residents.

Support local products, merchants, and services at home and abroad. Help shorten the supply chain and keep more tourist dollars in local economies.

To your list of language basics, add some phrases that help you say no to plastic cutlery, straw, or grocery bag in the language of your destination.

Choosing an ice-cream cone over a cup is the zero-waste option; there’s zero container or utensil waste. Or, when ordering pizza, ask that the “little white plastic piece” not be placed in the box. It’s a ‘pizza saver,’ designed to prevent the box lid from touching the pizza toppings. Or repurpose it into a handy phone stand. Avoid pod-based coffee machines and the waste they create (unless the pods are compostable or refillable).

Do what you can to reduce waste and accept that there will be times when waste can’t be avoided. Look for opportunities to extend the life of, say, a plastic bread bag by using it for dirty laundry, muddy shoes, or carrying your waste (and other trash you pick up) until it can be appropriately discarded.

Inspire others by celebrating your small successes with photos and dedicated hashtags such as #thereisnoplanetb, #choosetorefuse, #passonplastic, and #zerowaste.

Packing sustainably needn’t be overwhelming. You’ll likely have plastic containers in your luggage, pack environmentally unfriendly gear you’ve had for some time, and travel with eco-unfriendly electronics. But, if we can try harder to reduce a few more single-use plastics and convince others to do the same, these are small steps in the right direction.

Let’s make ‘rethink — refuse — reuse — reduce — rechoose — repair — recycle’ part of our travel-and-packing plans and habits.

If you found this post useful, please share it by choosing one or more social media buttons. Also, what are some of your favourite sustainable travel products and alternatives to plastics and other single-use products? Are there items on this list that should be replaced with something else? What should be added? Please share in the comments. Thank you.

Great eco-friendly product reviews. reusable eating utensils are a must for travel and work and dry bags keep important items dry without going through numerous plastic bags.

John Buchet

This may seem like a dumb question, but how do you refill a ballpoint pen?

Anne Betts

Hi John. It requires a new cartridge, a separate product. The pen itself doesn’t need to be discarded, just the empty cartridge. Here’s a link to a short YouTube video showing how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD6BYFy-9dQ

John Bucher

At least I was right about it being a dumb question!

No worries, John. Your question sent me to YouTube in search of a quick explanation in case someone else had a similar thought. Thanks for dropping by and reading the blog. All the best.

Very informative and thorough post.

Thanks for sharing Anne.

Terri-Lee Rayvals-Mele

I love this post! There are things in this list that I do now (thanks to advice from my friend Anne), but there are so many more considerations (like a reusable straw), that I hadn’t thought of. I will be visiting this post again before I pack for my upcoming winter/spring trip. Thanks Anne! This is my favourite post so far!

EXCELLENT!! I’m pleased you found it useful. Thank you, Terri-Lee for such a positive comment.

edward

Very thoughtful post. But i have a question that how can we refill a ball point?

The refill cartridge is a separate product.

Why Choose Eco-Friendly Travel Products?

Did you know that when you travel a lot, you also contribute more to the global trash problem? You can be a more responsible traveller by going green!  Ditch single-use plastics and aim for a zero-waste lifestyle by using more sustainable travel products. You’ll be enjoying travelling and nature twice as much if you won’t leave any unnecessary footprint behind.

Sustainable travel isn’t just about what you pack though, so as well as choosing sustainable and eco-friendly travel products, you should also consider choosing ecotourism destinations and places that promote ethical tours and activities.

TOP TIP: Remember, don’t throw away your current travel gear if it is still usable – being eco-friendly doesn’t mean throwing out perfectly good products, but rather when they are broken or damaged beyond repair then replace them with more sustainable items.

What to Look for in Sustainable Travel Products?

A lot of marketed “Eco-friendly” travel items you pack in your suitcase might not be exactly what they seem. Be aware of “greenwashing” and do some research to make sure you are choosing the right product(s) for your needs and for the environment.

Going green is all the rage nowadays, that’s why a lot of manufacturers are eager to jump on this bandwagon without really offering sustainable products. So to avoid getting ripped off, you have to know how to spot the legitimate ones.  Check out these tips to help you choose wisely:

Reusable/Durability

Eco-friendly products eliminate the need for single-use items so they must be durable enough to last a long time, without breaking the first time you use them!  Disposable products tend to be flimsy and cheaply made, that’s why it’s also easy to toss them into the garbage bin.

There are lots of beautiful sustainable products out there that are well-made and well-designed so you will love using them for many years to come.  That doesn’t necessarily mean they will be more expensive, but choosing good-quality items that last for longer is more eco-friendly than choosing cheaper things that you have to throw away.

For material, ideally, you want your Eco-friendly travel items and accessories to be made of sustainable materials such as bamboo, wood, silicone, fabric, metal, or glass. Durable plastic could also be an idea as long as it’s made of recycled plastic or is sure to last a long time, thus replacing single-use items.

Ingredients

For toiletries in particular, check that the ingredients are eco-friendly and collected responsibly, and don’t have any animal testing.  Sunscreen should be reef-safe if you will be swimming in rivers or in the ocean so you don’t add pollutants to the water.

Who Makes It

It’s always good to check out the company producing the items so you can see how eco-friendly they truly are.  Do they source sustainable base materials or recycle and repurpose old materials?  Are they ethical employers?  If their factory is abroad do they pay the workers a fair wage and have good working conditions?

While this post focuses on eco-friendly travel products, being sustainable is more about caring for the environment, it is about caring for the people in it too!

I should also mention here that a lot of the links in this article lead to Amazon.  If you can find these or similar products in local businesses where you live that is probably better for the environment as you won’t have additional packaging, but I’ve included the Amazon links for easy reference and if you can’t find these products anywhere else.

The Best Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Travel Products

Check out my pick for the best eco-friendly travel products so you can feel good about your travel gear!

Reusable Water Bottle with a Filter

Absolutely without a doubt the one thing I used every day without fail on my travels, I cannot recommend a filter water bottle highly enough!  You will save money and cut down on waste plastic as it negates the need for buying bottled water every day.   Water-to-Go is the bottle I use everywhere which filters 99.9999% of illness-causing contaminants, including those as small as a virus.  You can drink water from taps, rivers, streams and any freshwater source wherever you are, without fear of a dodgy stomach or waterborne diseases.

All Tales of a Backpacker readers can get 15% discount on a Water-to-Go filter bottle with the code BYORB

GET YOUR WATER BOTTLE

While the version I have (a 75 cl Active Bottle) is made of plastic, it has a removable and recyclable filter and one 26oz/75cl filter replaces 400 single-use plastic bottles, so I still feel like this is the right choice!

If you’re still not convinced, Water to Go have recently launched their even more e co-friendly bioplastic bottle, with the body of the bottle made from sustainably produced and ethically harvested 100% sugar cane – how cool is that!

Canvas or Cotton Tote Bag

I always carry at least two cotton totes with me on my travels, as they come in handy for so many different things I inevitably need more than one!  Use them as laundry bags, shopping bags, beach bags and anything else you can think of to avoid using a plastic bag or single-use paper bag.

Cotton bags can be rolled up and stuffed into the smallest of spaces when you’re not using them, whereas canvas totes are usually larger and bulkier to pack.  There are hundreds of different designs and colours to choose from, Etsy has some cute designs like this Wanderlust tote bag .

After-Sun Bar

Solid Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

We all know that plastic bottles are not good for the environment, and when you’re travelling carrying around bottles of shampoo and conditioner takes up space and weighs a lot too!  Solid shampoo and conditioner bars are much smaller and lighter, don’t contribute to your liquid allocation for hand luggage if you’re only taking carry-on.

There are lots of brands making solid shampoos and conditioners with eco-friendly ingredients that are vegan and cruelty free, and without nasties like parabens.  My personal favourite is Kin Kind NOURISH me! shampoo bars which is the only brand I’ve found that lathers like a normal shampoo and leaves my thick hair clean and soft.

eco traveller products

Facial Cleanser Bar

I have quite oily skin that is prone to breakouts, so I am very fussy about how I cleanse my skin.  I’ve used various liquid cleansers but for my last trip I decided to take a gamble and try out a solid facial cleanser from Ethique and I LOVE IT!

It leaves my skin feeling smooth and soft, but without any dryness and more importantly without spots!  The only downside for travel is the shape of the bars doesn’t fit into any of my travel containers, so I have to cut them in half to fit inside the travel tins I already have.  For short trips, check out their mini trial packs .

Eco-Friendly Toiletry Bottles

eco traveller products

If you do still need some liquid toiletries, having travel-sized containers to decant your own stuff into is a fabulous space-saving trick, as well as reducing pointless plastic use when buying mini-sized toiletries at the airport.  This silicone set has a 3-layer leak-proof design and has a soft and squeezy body so you can get the last bits out!

Toiletry Bag

Current flight regulations mean that to take any liquids in your carry-on you will need a clear bag to put them in.  Don’t pick up a plastic bag at the airport, come prepared with a  TSA approved toiletry bag that you can use every time you fly – this one has a handle for hanging in the shower too.

eco traveller products

Bamboo Toothbrush and Toothpaste Tabs

eco traveller products

This plastic-free toothbrush is a great addition to your eco-friendly travel toiletry kit and has soft charcoal-infused bristles, is vegan and comes with its own travel case and stand!  Pair it with some plastic free toothpaste tabs and you’re good to go!

Cruelty-free and Vegan Make-up

While I don’t travel with much make-up, if you do bring some with you then choose cruelty-free brands that haven’t been tested on animals.  You can also find various options that are vegan too – there are too many options to pick out the best ones here as everyone has such different requirements, but do your research and choose wisely!

Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Forget your bottle of chemically-laden makeup remover or disposable wipes and go green with washable round pads . Just dip in water or dab with your favourite eco-friendly cleanser, and gently wipe over your skin to remove makeup. You can use these washable pads over a thousand times with no waste!

Bamboo Cutlery Set

eco traveller products

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve used my bamboo cutlery set while travelling and it is one of those essential eco-friendly travel items that is easily overlooked !

Not only do they come in handy when I’m out and about eating street food or having snacks that I can’t eat with my hands, but also in hostel kitchens when there are never enough forks or knives!  This bamboo set is more eco-friendly than hard-wearing plastic, and lighter than stainless steel so that’s why it gets my vote.

Collapsible Silicone Food Storage Containers

I didn’t bring one of these with me on my current backpacking trip and I regretted it immediately!  When you’re cooking your own meals or eating out and want to take away the leftovers, avoid food waste with a collapsible container you can fill up and enjoy the following day.

It is hard planning and cooking meals every day when you have nowhere to store any cooked food!

Be wary of transporting cooked food in one of these though, they may leak.  When you’re not using it, just fold it down or fill it with clean clothes to avoid wasting space in your luggage.

eco traveller products

Silicone Ziplock Bags

eco traveller products

These reusable ziplock bags are another eco-friendly way to solve your food storage problems without adding to the bulk of plastic waste in the ocean. The silicone material is more durable than plastic so you can re-use these bags over and over.  They don’t leak, are easy to clean, and won’t easily puncture. You can pop in your favourite fruits, nuts or sweets, and use them the next day for your homemade slaw.

Some cheaper reusable bags are made from BPA-free PEVA which is still plastic so isn’t as eco-friendly as silicone, but still better than single-use food bags.  Another sustainable alternative is beeswax wraps, although they aren’t vegan!

Pocket-sized Laundry Machine

Scrubba wash bags give you the freedom to wash your clothes even if you are in a hotel or anywhere where laundry fees are expensive.  There is no need for electricity so you can save money, reduce your power use and still enjoy fresh and clean clothes.

By using minimal water and no electricity, each Scrubba wash bag saves travellers an average of 1000 litres of water and 7.5kg of carbon each year.  As an added bonus because it is water-tight you can also use it as a dry bag too!

eco traveller products

However, if that feels like too much effort, at least bring some eco-friendly laundry detergen t with you to use at the laundrette.  I use these Tru Earth laundry detergent sheets that are plastic-free and easy to pop in my luggage as they pack flat.

Solar Charger

eco traveller products

Harness the power of the sun and fuel your gadgets and devices in an eco-friendly way with a solar charger. You can fully charge your phone and other gadgets on a sunny day without the need to plug into any electrical source. It’s quite convenient when you are going off the grid since you do not have to depend on fossil fuels for power, just some sunshine!

My hand holding a Kindle eReader

eBooks & eReader

This should be a no-brainer, it doesn’t make sense to bring bulky travel guidebooks on a trip, it’s too heavy, and let’s be honest – they are often left unused because many of them are outdated as soon as they are printed. As much as I love reading books, bringing them on my travels is just too much.

Not only are traditional books too heavy, but since they are made of paper, trees are cut down to have them sold. And since they are printed on (ink), they actually can’t be recycled that easily. So, what is the alternative?  eBooks!

Not only readings books can be stored here, but travel guides too. eBooks are with bookmark feature, meaning you can easily go back and forth on pages without having to flip through them endlessly.

E-Readers are rechargeable (you can charge them with a solar power bank), and you can bring hundreds of books with you without the weight and environmental impact of physical books! Good for you and good for the environment. Definitely a win-win situation!

The standard Kindle is a good choice, but the more advanced Kindle Paperwhite is waterproof so is super useful for backpackers and travellers who might get caught out in the rain.

COMPARE PRICES ON AMAZON

If you already have a Kindle, then a Kindle Unlimited subscription could be really useful for you, as it includes unlimited access to over 1 million eBooks.  You can also use the subscription on any device with the free Kindle app, you don’t even need to own a Kindle.

Final Thoughts on Eco-Friendly Travel Products

Travelling can nourish your soul, but it can also add to the already piled-up plastic waste in our oceans. I hope that this list of sustainable travel products has been useful for you. If you think that I forgot something and want me to add it to the list, let me know in the comment section below!

Thanks for the tip Maddie, I’ll check it out! 🙂

Great advice Claire – I travel a lot and spend a great deal of my time in the ocean salt water (swimming, diving, surfing) and I’ve found a great combined 2in1 shampoo/conditioner that works wonders on revitalising my hair and getting moisture back into it when it gets so dried out – you can get it on their site or Amazon; recommended! https://amzn.to/3u8dpy0

Eco-Friendly Travel Products: 5 Must-Have Essentials for Sustainable Journeys

  • January 29, 2023

author-avatar

The Rise of Eco-Friendly Products And Travel

Eco-friendly travel, also known as sustainable travel or green travel, is the practise of limiting tourism’s negative environmental, social, and cultural impacts. It entails taking actions to conserve and maintain the natural environment, cultural tradition, and local communities of the locations you visit.

Eco-friendly travel can mean many things, such as:

  • Using reusable water bottles and other eco-friendly products
  • Choosing accommodations that are environmentally and socially responsible
  • Using public transportation or carpooling instead of driving alone
  • Supporting local businesses and purchasing locally-made products
  • Reducing energy consumption by using energy-efficient devices
  • Offsetting your carbon emissions through carbon credits or sustainable development projects
  • Being mindful of your impact on the local environment and culture, and respecting local customs and traditions

What Are Eco-Friendly Travel Products?

Eco-travel friendly products are items specifically designed to help travelers be more sustainable and reduce their environmental impact while on the go.

These products range from reusable water bottles and bags , to solar chargers and bamboo toothbrushes . Even travel gear, such as luggage made from recycled materials or backpacks made from organic cotton, can be an eco-friendly travel product.

As you can imagine, the goal of eco-travel products is to make it easier for people to reduce their waste, conserve energy, and protect the environment while traveling.

Furthermore, many travel-sized toiletries are TSA-approved, so you may bring them on a plane without worrying about exceeding liquid restrictions. There is also a large range of travel-size toiletries available from various brands, allowing you to test out new items or personalize your travel kit with the precise things you want and use. Overall, travel-size toiletries might be a practical and cost-effective solution for travelers.

5. Eco-friendly luggage

Eco-friendly baggage created from sustainable materials is helpful for the environment since it may minimise greenhouse gas emissions, waste, water use, and improve air quality.  Traditional baggage materials, such as synthetic polymers and leather, are typically manufactured using fossil fuels and can contribute to air pollution.

Eco-friendly materials, on the other hand, such as bamboo, recycled plastic, and cotton, have a lower carbon footprint and do not have the same harmful influence on the environment. Choosing eco-friendly luggage will lessen the environmental impact of the luggage business and contribute to a more sustainable future. Furthermore, eco-friendly baggage constructed of biodegradable materials can help minimise trash in landfills since it degrades faster than standard materials.

So if you can buy and use eco-friendly luggage ( backpacks , suitcases, laptop covers etc.) during your travels, you would do a great benefit to the environment and thus promote sustainable travel too. Even better, if you are an influencer, you could show travelers in your network what to buy and give them a few solid reasons why.

The Benefits of Eco-Friendly Travel Products

Eco-friendly travel items provide various advantages for both travellers and the environment. Many eco-travel products, for example, are created from renewable materials such as bamboo and recycled plastic, making them better for the environment than typical things made from nonrenewable resources such as plastic or aluminum.

Furthermore, eco-travel products generally take less energy and water to produce than traditional items, making them even more resource efficient. Finally, choosing eco-travel items helps minimise waste by reducing single-use plastics, which is becoming increasingly essential in an age when plastic pollution is a huge concern for our seas, rivers, and the planet in general.

Eco-friendly travel is not only becoming more popular, but it’s also necessary to sustainable tourism. You can be an eco-friendly traveler by doing things like using public transportation, staying in eco-friendly accommodations, and eating local food. However, something which is even easier is to purchase eco-friendly travel products, such as reusable water bottles and straws, organic toiletries, and secondhand clothes.

Not only is eco-friendly travel good for the environment, but it’s usually more authentic and less expensive than traditional tourism. So next time you’re planning a trip, consider traveling eco-friendly make sure you have items like these in your backpack!

Happy travels!

27 Eco-Friendly Travel Products You Need For Your Packing List

Posted by Francesca Brooking | Packing Tips | 16

27 Eco-Friendly Travel Products You Need For Your Packing List

From sunscreens to footwear and even the clothes on your back, no matter how small, every item has an impact on the environment.

Simply making a few careful decisions about what goes in your suitcase can be the difference between protecting the planet and polluting it.

A little overwhelmed? Check out this eco-friendly packing guide.

I’ve compiled a list of my favourite eco-friendly travel products that will help you reduce your impact and be a more sustainable traveller wherever you go.

By making the switch to these eco-friendly travel essentials you’ll be cutting down your carbon footprint and supporting small businesses and amazing causes around the world.

Oh and guess what? Some of them will even help save you money in the long run too!

E co-friendly travel products to add to your packing list

Here are 27 sustainable travel essentials that do their bit for your suitcase and the planet:

1. Water filter bottle

Lifestyle image of a LifeStraw, one of the best water filter bottles for travel and one of the most essential eco-friendly travel products.

Use it for: cutting out single-use plastic bottles!

Single-use plastic water bottles are not only costly (particularly if you’re buying one a day) but they’re also a scourge on the planet.

According to the non-profit Ocean Conservancy, 8 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year on top of the estimated 150 million metric tonnes already in the marine environment!

My go-to is LifeStraw Go. It can remove 99.9999% of all waterborne nasties including viruses, disease-causing bacteria, heavy metals, chemicals, microplastics and protozoan cysts.

Designed to keep you hydrated in any environment and outdoor location, it can filter most freshwater sources from a tap to a stream.

2. Reusable straws

Use it for: reducing single-use plastic !

Love drinking from a straw but worried about the environmental impact of those pesky plastic versions? You can get straws made from all kinds of materials like bamboo, pasta (yes, really!), paper and stainless steel.

Packing a reusable straw is a simple and nifty way to incorporate a zero-waste lifestyle when you’re travelling. I personally like this set that comes in a little pouch and with silicone brushes to keep them hygienic.

3. Bamboo utensils

Bamboo utensils are amazing eco-friendly travel products. These ones have a pouch that makes them very portable.

Use it for: reducing single-use plastic!

Say no to throwaway plastic cutlery by using a set of reusable bamboo versions instead. This set of bamboo utensils comes in a pouch so they’re easy to carry. You can also personalise your set so there’s no risk of them getting mixed up with anyone else’s.

These sustainable travel products come in handy whenever you’re having a meal out and about from picnics to street food. They’re smooth to the touch and can easily be washed in warm water.

4. Sustainable tote bags

Use it for: cutting out single-use plastic bags!

Plastic bags are one of the biggest waste offenders. Countries like Kenya and Indonesia have banned or put taxes on them. Still, it’s estimated that 500 billion of them are used annually worldwide. That’s about one million every minute!

One simple solution is to pack a variety of reusable bags that you can use throughout your trip. I love using this organic recycled cotton tote from Amnesty International.

It’s a handy bag for when you’re out and about or heading to the supermarket. It features a quote by Emma Goldman, an anarchist political activist and writer:

“A revolution without dancing is not a revolution worth having.”

5. Sturdy backpack

Product image of Osprey Fairview backpack for eco-friendly travel products.

Use it for: durable and long-lasting bags!

A sturdy bag that can handle whatever gets thrown at it is one of the most important eco-travel accessories. The sturdier the better because you don’t have to replace it as often and it will keep your belongings safe.

A good option is Osprey Europe. All bags are vegan and they incorporate recycled materials where possible.

Osprey Europe’s bags are known for being exceptionally durable and they will even repair rather than replace products under their ‘All Mighty Guarantee.’

I have a Women’s Fairview 40L (they have a men’s version too – Fairpoint ) . It’s a lightweight backpack that’s perfect for casual hiking trips or as a carry-on (check luggage size allowances). I love that it has multiple pockets and it’s comfortable to wear.

6. Solid toiletries

Use it for: cutting down on water consumption!

I’m a little bit obsessed with solid toiletries. I’m talking about bar versions of all essentials like shampoo, conditioner, face cream, moisturisers and even cleansers.  They’re such useful travel-friendly products.

I love using these eco-friendly travel toiletries because they’re zero-waste on top of being plastic-free (no packaging!). They last three times as long as liquid versions which makes them economical.

They also pass airport security so you don’t have to worry about squeezing all your tiny liquids into a bag and there’s no chance of spills.

They don’t take up much room either. The only challenge is transporting them without them getting dirty. For that, I recommend a soap tin.

Finding the best solid toiletries depends on your hair and skin type. Personally, I like this shampoo bar by Ethique for my flyaway hair. It makes my hair clean and shiny without being too heavy. I don’t need to use a conditioner with it either. Another one of my favourites is Gruum.

You can read more about my top green toiletries here.

7. Reusable toiletry containers

Use it for: reducing plastic!

If you have favourite liquid toiletries that you don’t fancy giving up, that’s fine! Instead of buying travel-sized versions of them when you travel, I recommend GoToobs from humangear as a zero-waste alternative.

Made from squeezable food-safe and BPA-free silicone, these super handy sustainable travel items have large openings for easy access to fill up and clean. There is a range of airport security accepted sizes available and a varied choice of colours.

Travel-sized toiletries run out quickly, and they’re expensive to keep buying. Meanwhile, they add to the already straining landfills. It’s not a cost-effective or sustainable solution for any traveller in the long run!

8. Reef-safe sunscreen

Product image of Green People sunscreen.

Use it for: protecting reefs and marine life!

Sunscreen is a crucial part of our health wherever we go but the regular kind is actually terrible for the environment. Oxybenzone, a chemical found in most sunscreens, affects the DNA of young coral causing them to become fatally disfigured.

Now, more destinations are encouraging the use of sunscreen made from zinc oxide or titanium oxide as they are biodegradable and don’t interfere with marine life – particularly when snorkelling or diving!

Some destinations, including Hawaii and Palau, have even put an outright ban on all sunscreens containing oxybenzone.

You’re not always likely to find reef-safe sunscreen in your typical pharmacy or supermarket so it does require a bit of forward planning.

My particular favourite is Green People.

This particular brand works alongside the Marine Conservation Society to raise awareness of the effect that the chemicals in regular sunscreen have on marine life.

Its own sunscreen contains certified organic natural ingredients and is gentle on skin. It’s a perfect addition to your eco-friendly packing list!

9. Antibacterial bamboo clothing

Use it for: ethical fashion!

Sustainably sourced bamboo material doesn’t just boast comfort. It’s great for travel because it’s antibacterial, which means it stays fresh for longer – ideal if you’re packing light and you don’t see a washing machine for several days.

Bamboo clothing cuts out 97.%5 of UV rays so you know you’ll be protected when holidaying in hotter climates. Thanks to its hollow microfibre material, it’s both warm and breathable. It can also wick away moisture from the skin.

Bamboo clothes are perfect for backpackers and luxury travellers alike. They make your packing list more eco-friendly because the source of the material is more sustainable to cultivate and harvest than cotton.

Bamboo is a type of grass that can grow naturally without the use of fertilisers and pesticides.

It can survive off just rainwater, and the soil remains in a much healthier condition because bamboo is cut rather than uprooted. It is also the fastest-growing plant in the world!

BAM is a brand that caters to all your bamboo clothing needs from activewear to t-shirts and socks . I love their bold patterns and prints.

10. PFC-free outdoor gear

Close up of a walking boot.

Use it for: reducing toxic chemicals

The irony in most regular outdoor gear is that, although designed for the outdoors, it’s not actually outdoors-friendly. Unbelievable, right?

Most outdoor gear contains PFCs which are human-made chemicals that are used for their waterproofing properties. Most PFCs are toxic, non-degradable, and have been found in organisms around the world.

The same PFCs on outdoor gear were discovered in remote lakes and even in the livers of polar bears.

Led by the Greenpeace campaign ‘Detox Outdoors’, many companies have begun phasing out the use of PFCs, but the industry has a long way to go before there are any real, significant changes.

The problem is PFCs are effective and nothing quite matches up to them – yet.

Both Patagonia and Jack Wolfskin are committed to cutting out their reliance on PFCs and they have some good-quality sustainable travel gear.

11. Vegan shoes

An astonishing 300 million shoes are thrown out every year in the UK. On top of that, footwear accounts for 16% to 32% of the fashion industry’s total environmental pollution.

So, what’s the alternative?

Comfy shoes that are made from eco-friendly, durable and recyclable materials. My favourite is Vivobarefoot. It sells a range of shoes and accessories that are designed for any adventure.

Its trainers combine the practicality of a walking boot with the casual style of a trainer. The shoes are 100% plant-based and made from recyclable and eco-materials!

12. Solar power battery charger

Use it for: reducing energy  consumption

Solar-powered eco-friendly travel products are an amazing way to reduce your carbon footprint and make sure all your important electronics are charged wherever you go.

A solar charger ticks both those boxes and you don’t have to worry about finding a reliable place to charge your phone.

I particularly like this power bank because it doubles up as a flashlight so it’s perfect for camping. It’s also dustproof, waterproof and shatter-resistant. Not bad!

13. Sewing kit

Image of coloured threads, needles and buttons. A sweing kit is a handy eco-friendly travel product.

Use it for: reducing waste!

I can’t tell you how often a sewing kit has come in handy while travelling. It’s an essential part of any eco-friendly travel kit (just be careful of the scissors if you’re flying with a carry-on!).

You can patch up items that would otherwise end up being thrown away. It also saves you money and time because you don’t need to find a replacement.

Duct tape can also be handy for this too.

14. Takeaway food tins

Use it for: saving money and food waste!

One of the best zero waste travel essentials to have in your bag, d urable stainless steel food tins or Tupperware make an excellent way to cut down on food waste. You can use them to store leftover meals, lunches and snacks.

You can get them out when you want to avoid styrofoam containers restaurants tend to put any of your leftovers in. You might also be able to use it at a street food market.

This leakproof lunch box has a handy removable divider to keep dishes separate. Plus it’s easy to clean and comes with a spare seal for double leak protection on the go.

15. Reusable coffee mug

Product image of a reusable travel coffee cup.

Use it for: reducing plastic and paper waste!

I love a good coffee in the morning but buying takeaway drinks when you’re out and about can get wasteful. Not to mention a lot of takeaway cups aren’t recyclable.

If you enjoy your caffeine fix as much as I do, it might be worth making a reusable coffee cup one of your sustainable holiday essentials.

I like this one that’s specially designed for travel. It’s made with stainless steel to keep hot drinks hot for 6 hours and cold drinks cold for 12. It also has a fully leakproof resealable lid to guarantee zero spills. Handy.

16. Bamboo sunglasses

Use it for: cutting out plastic!

It’s always a good idea to keep the sun out of your eyes. One of my favourite sustainable travel accessories is Bambooka Sunglasses and it does a pretty decent job of it.

Plus its frames are made from bamboo, not plastic. This is particularly ideal if, like me, you’re prone to accidentally breaking your sunglasses.

In fact, if your old pair gets damaged you can send them back to Bambooka and the brand will give you 25% off your next order.

Bambooka is a unique brand as it’s volunteer-based. All profits are donated to their partner charities that provide eye care around the world.

17. Guppy bag

Use it for: reducing micro-plastics!

Did you know that when washed, clothing made from synthetic materials releases small pieces of microplastics that end up in our waterways?

An easy solution is to put them in a guppy bag before they enter the washing machine. This Guppy Friend Washing Bag can simply be tucked into a corner of your bag until you need it.

This simple essential will help you protect marine life and fight against plastic waste wherever you go.

Another bonus? It’ll prevent some of your more fragile garments from getting damaged in the machine!

18. Plastic-free sanitary products

Someone holding a menstrual cup in a flower field

Another way to cut out plastic is through your choice of sanitary products.

Tampons and pads can be a bloody nightmare for the environment. Not to mention they’re not always readily available in some parts of the world. Queue a bag filled with sanitary products in every available nook and crevice…

Do your bag, body and environment a favour by adding a pair of WUKA period pants or a menstrual cup to your eco-travel kit.

A lot of people swear by the menstrual cup although it does have some pros and cons to consider. For example, it can last up to 10 years which is a huge amount of money and waste saved! But you do have the tricky issue of keeping it hygienic while travelling.

If you’re unconvinced by both of these, TOTM does a range of biodegradable sanitary products. They still count as eco-friendly travel products!

Curious about what period pants are like when travelling? Read my WUKA review!

19. Bamboo toothbrush

After switching to a bamboo toothbrush I’ve never looked back since. One of my favourite eco travel products, they work just as well and last just as long as their plastic cousins. I would even say they’re more gentle on gums and teeth.

Wild & Stone does great quality toothbrushes. Once they reached the end of their lives, you can put the handle into the compost bin but you’ll have to pull out the bristles first as they’re yet to be fully recyclable!

Top tip: after you’ve used your bamboo toothbrush, put it somewhere for the bristles to drain out. This will help it last longer. They can last up to three months.

20. Bamboo toothbrush case

Image of a toothbrush case, bamboo toothbrushes and towels.

Keep your eco-friendly toothbrush safe by putting it in a bamboo travel case. This toothbrush case is made from polished bamboo.

The amazing thing about bamboo (as we’ve previously covered) is that it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It’s zero-waste and biodegradable too!

21. Soap nuts

Use it for: cutting out toxic chemicals!

Nope, I’m not going nuts, it really is a detergent that grows on trees . The magic is in the shells which have a natural surfactant called saponin which creates soap suds and cleans and softens clothes without damaging the colours.

Soap nuts are particularly useful for those with sensitive and allergy-prone skin as they’re hypoallergenic.

Approximately 300g lasts for 100 washes, which is about 3p per wash. Economical AND ecological. It’s a double win, really.

22. Reusable makeup cloths

image of makeup removing pads

Ditch makeup wipes and opt for a reusable version instead. They’re much better for your skin and the environment.

Choose from cotton makeup pads, bamboo makeup pads or a nice and simple face flannel. The great thing about these eco-friendly travel products is that they can be washed and reused over and over again.

I personally use an anti-bacterial face flannel to dry my face after washing my makeup off with jojoba oil and warm water.

It’s a routine that’s never failed either at home or abroad.

23. Reusable razor

Stainless steel safety razor and a plant pot. An eco friendly travel product.

Every year, 2 million razors are thrown away and the majority of them end up in landfill as their mix of materials makes them difficult to recycle.

Luckily, stainless steel safety razors are here to help you make the switch to a more sustainable shaving routine. Stainless steel is infinitely recyclable so it never has to end up in a landfill.

I like this razor because it’s easily transportable and has a beautiful wooden handle. The shave also leaves your skin beautifully smooth.

24. DEET-free insect repellent

You don’t need DEET to keep the bugs at bay. Leaving it on the shelf will only be doing your body and the environment a favour. Instead, there are eco-friendly versions that are just as effective without toxic chemicals.

This one by Badger has kept people safe in the rainforests of Costa Rica and by the ‘mosquito-infested canals of Malaysia’ according to one reviewer.

It’s also travel-sized, cruelty-free, certified organic and comes in a little metal bottle. They do a tin version too for extra sustainability points.

25. All-terrain sneakers

Two people wearing Tropicfeel sneakers sitting on a wooden roof with mugs in their hands.

Use it for: an all-rounder sneaker

If you’re the type of traveller that likes to do a bit of everything whether it’s urban sightseeing, hiking, adrenaline sports and more, knowing what shoes to pack can be a bit of a conundrum.

Let’s face it, filling your bag up with bulky shoes is less than ideal. So, what if you could pack one shoe and be sorted no matter where your adventures take you? That’s exactly what Tropicfeel can do.

The brand’s All-Terrain sneakers can take you from the streets to the great outdoors.

They’re lightweight, comfy, odourless, water-friendly and quick drying. They’re also sustainable, made from recycled polyester and EVA from unused or waste materials.

26. Bamboo earphones

Use it for: sustainable materials and great listening

One for music lovers and podcast listeners! House of Marley is no stranger to making its tech as eco-friendly as possible and the portable wireless earbuds are no exception.

These eco travel essentials are made from bamboo, natural wood fibre composite and Marley’s own REWIND™ fabric.

They have a 9-hour onboard playtime and a battery life of 32 hours in the case which makes them handy for long journeys on the road.

27. Natural deodorant

Wild deodorant product images side by side

Use it for: reducing toxic chemicals and plastic waste!

It’s crazy how so many of our toiletries are encased in plastic. Standard deodorants and antiperspirants also have the added bonus of containing toxic chemicals.

Some of them even have aluminium which blocks your pores and prevents you from sweating (sweating is actually very important for your health).

Wild have created natural deodorants that are effective and kind to your body. They offer a refillable case made from aluminium and recycled plastic which you can fill up with your favourite deodorant scents.

It’s delivered to your door in subscriptions as much or as little as you like. These eco-friendly essentials can easily be slipped into a bag when on the go too.

I didn’t realize that bamboo was so ecologically friendly. And I love that it offers UV protection. This is a really a great list. I’m going to be spending some more time checking out these products in more detail

Yes, sustainably sourced bamboo is great because it grows so quickly and uses hardly any water. 🙂

Great list, although I think it’s also worth noting that when it comes to clothes and accessories, the most sustainable option is the thing you already own! 🙂

Of course! Reusing is key. 🙂

Thanks for sharing. It’s a wonderful feeling that more and more products are becoming readily available and now geared to sustainable travel

Thank you! It definitely makes things a whole lot easier 🙂

Great post! I have many of these already and have also discovered some new ideas like the guppy bag! Brilliant.

The guppy bag is such a great little tool. Keeps clothes safe when they’re being washed too!

I love these suggestions. I didn’t realise just how diverse bamboo is. Bamboo clothing is a surprise and I’ve bookmarked the site you suggested to read next. It sounds perfect for hiking.

Thank you! Bamboo seems to be the way to go.

What a wonderfully curated list! I already use many of these.. but the new one I love the most on this list is soap nuts! I definitely need to look for these!

Eco Travel: 30 Tips for Beginner Eco Travelers

Welcome to JetSetting Fools, here you will find our best travel tips for destinations worldwide. Some of the links on this site are Affiliate Links and if you use them to make a purchase, we may earn a commission. For more information, read our Disclosure Policy .

Eco Travel is in the spotlight more than ever. The unexpected and sudden lack of tourism highlighted the undeniable impact that travel has on the environment. With less people moving around and most travelers staying home, polluted skies cleared and top destinations realized a reprieve from the tourist crush.

However, travel has made a massive comeback. With pent-up demand and travel more trendy than ever, the tourism sector is coming back even stronger than it was before. As we travel, eco-friendly tourism is a major consideration. For those who want to become better Eco Travelers, we are sharing our top tips for sustainable travel!

Why Eco Traveling is Essential

Standing On the beach, Le Morne, Mauritius

We live in a fascinating and marvelous world of diverse civilizations and intriguing cultures. Exploring to the far reaches of the earth is a natural curiosity – and traveling has never been more accessible than in our modern times.

The act of travel, however, can gobble up natural resources, leaving behind a rather large carbon footprint. In hard-to-reach locales, limited resources can be quickly consumed by travelers. Popular cities and natural sites can suffer from being over-touristed, trampled and mistreated.

More informed than ever, it is essential that people become more conscious about Eco Traveling.

How We Became Better Eco Travelers

To be honest, when we first started traveling full-time in 2014, eco travels were not top of mind. Throughout our travels, however, we have become personally aware of the unfortunate effects of tourism and it changed our outlook.

We have witnessed the beautiful Beaches of Thailand strangled in trash, mountains of plastic water bottles piled up in Bali and free maps and pamphlets strewn along the most famous boulevards of Europe .

And it’s not just trash and plastic that contributes to the wastefulness. Food waste and a strain on resources are huge contributors as well. We often see full plates of unfinished meals left on restaurant tables and hear the hum of air conditioners cooling empty rooms. At airports abroad, we are left baffled by passengers who skip out on public transport in favor of a long, single-person taxi ride.

As we observe the carelessness, we vow to do better ourselves. Which is, admittedly, a work in progress, but we are aiming for a higher eco-travel consciousness!

Tips for Eco Travels by JetSettingFools.com

Eco-Friendly Travel Definitions

Before we jump into our list of eco travel tips, we want to cover a few of common terms often used in conjunction with ecofriendly travel. Sometimes words, like Sustainable Tourism and Eco Tourism, are used interchangeably, while they actually have different meanings.

What is Sustainable Travel?

The United Nations World Tourism Organization defines Sustainable Tourism as, “Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

According to Wikipedia, a sustainable traveler should strive “to make only a positive impact on the environment, society and economy” while visiting a place.

What is Eco Tourism?

Eco Tourism – or ecotourism – is defined by The International Ecotourism Society as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.”

Some of the benefits of ecotourism are minimizing tourist impact, building awareness, supporting local communities, providing positive experiences and improving conservation.

What Are Eco Tours?

Ecotourism companies offer small group, educational tours that adhere to the principles of ecotourism. Do note, however, that some companies who offer ‘eco tours’ do not abide by the true definition so make sure to do your research and find a travel company that does!

What is Green Travel?

Green Travel is an umbrella term that can refer to both eco tourism and sustainable travel.

What is Eco Travel?

Just like Green Travel, the Eco Travel definition is broad. For many people, Ecological Travel means any effort made while traveling to protect the environment.

What is an Eco Traveler?

Eco travelers are tourists with a heightened awareness of and an effort to support the environment while traveling.

30 ECO TRAVEL TIPS

If you are wondering how to travel eco-friendly, you are in the right place. Our list of eco-conscious travel tips can be easily implemented into your next trip!

Eco Travel Tips by JetSettingFools.com

The Basics of Eco-Friendly Vacations

Eco vacations start with the most basic actions of the travelers. Taking on these few tasks will help to ensure environmentally friendly travel.

#1 Don’t Be ‘One and Done’ with Hotel Towels

Reusing towels at hotels is one of the common eco-friendly travel ideas and something we certainly practice at home and abroad. Hanging up your towel – rather than carelessly discarding it on the floor after one use – helps to cut down on the amount of water and energy used to clean it.

#2 Sleep on the Same Sheets

Likewise, your bed sheets likely don’t need to be changed if you are staying in a place for less than a week. Not only does the environment benefit, but most hotels use chemicals (like bleach and fabric softener) to clean linens, which are not eco-friendly.

To be a better eco traveler, request your sheets not to be changed – or simply hang the Do Not Disturb sign on your door and eliminate any cleaning during your stay.

#3 Take the Chill Out of the Air

One of our top eco travel tips is to always be conscious of how often you run the air conditioner in your accommodations. Of course, you always should turn off the air conditioner when you leave your room. Take it a step further, and even in warm weather destinations, limit the use of the A/C on cool nights and mornings.

#4 Flip the Switch

Turning off lights when you leave a room is a good habit for anyone who is trying to be more eco friendly! When traveling, make a mental note to switch off all the lights when you leave your room.

#5 Save the Water for Swimming

Long, hot showers can eat up resources! Even if your accommodations have water-conserving showerheads and energy efficient water heaters, take a short shower. You will have more time to explore and enjoy your destination, too!

#6 Don’t Be a Litter Bug

Litter and trash are big pet peeves of ours – and travelers are big offenders. Don’t be a beach-goer who leaves trash behind or a city explorer who lets tissues slip from their pockets or pamphlets fall from their purse. I always keep a foldable bag with me, just in case I can’t find proper trash receptacle.

#7 Invest in Eco Friendly Travel Containers

One of the best eco-friendly measures you can take is to buy reusable travel toiletries and containers. Assemble your own eco friendly travel kit with products made with the environment in mind.

Refillable, eco friendly travel bottles are key – and the GoToob brand makes an excellent product. Not only do the bottles have a lifetime warranty (ensuring they will last), but they are made of BPA-free silicone.

However, you can forego the plastic tubes altogether when you opt to use shampoo and conditioner bars instead. If you go this route, make sure you invest in an eco friendly travel soap dish – like this one – too!

Environmentally friendly travel bottles are not the only toiletries for your eco travels. Another product you will want in your eco travel kit is a toothbrush – like these highly rated eco friendly bamboo toothbrushes.

Ladies looking to cut down on feminine hygiene products (both packing and using them on trips) might want to consider a reusable menstrual cup. The Diva Cup  is widely touted as one of the best eco friendly travel accessories for women.

#8 Travel Eco Friendly by Taking Public Transport

Using public transportation is one of the best eco friendly travel habits to form. Not only does taking the train or bus help the environment, but the very act of it offers a local experience, too!

That said, biking and walking are even more environmentally friendly ways to travel. In fact, walking is our preferred method of exploring. We slow down a bit, wander and see things we would miss otherwise.

#9 Use the Right Protection

Did you know that most sunscreens are harmful to the environment – especially marine life? A great way to be eco friendly while traveling to the beach is to use specific sunscreen that is ocean- and reef-safe – like this one .

If you want to completely eliminate slathering on sunscreen and the negative impact, you could also consider wearing a UPF Sun Protection shirt that will keep you protected from the sun’s rays.

#10 Let the Wild Animals Be Wild

We love seeing wildlife in their natural habitat while on our travels. Monkeys in Malaysia , penguins in South Africa , bears in Montana and sea lions on the California Coast are just a few of the wild animals we have spotted from a safe distance.

However, one of our top eco-friendly travel tips is to resist the temptation to feed the animals – yes, even the birds in NYC’s Central Park . Feeding wild animals human food disrupts the natural environment.

Ecotravel isn’t just about the things you do, but also the products that you use. We have already mentioned a few of our favorite earth-friendly travel products, but there are a few more you will want to be certain to pack for your next trip .

#11 Ditch Single Use Plastics for Reusable Containers

Single use plastic water bottles are a huge problem in almost all tourist destinations – and especially so in warm climates, on islands and in developing countries. You can help keep plastic use to a minimum by bringing along an eco friendly travel mug and reusable water bottle on your trip.

Travel Mug: Eco Friendly

An eco friendly travel coffee mug is ideal for those who want to be kind to the environment. We like the Kleen Kanteen insulated eco travel mug and they offer a wide range of environmentally friendly beverage products.

Water Bottle for Eco Travelers

When it comes to travel water bottles, we think it is best to go collapsible. The STOJO Collapsible Cup is rated by many as the best eco water bottle for traveling – and they make great travel mugs as well.

Filters and Purifiers for Travelers

When traveling to places where the water isn’t potable, you can bring your own filter or purifier rather than buying single-use plastic bottles. While we have used a Steripen (although we have to admit it didn’t live up to expectations), Lifestraw is a highly rated water purifier for travelers and backpackers, too.

#12 Don’t Forget a Reusable Shopping Bag

One of our favorite eco friendly travel products is our cloth shopping bag . In fact, we think it is one of the eco friendly travel essentials – and we never set off without it!

Always tucked into my day pack , we use it to carry home items from the grocery store, for shopping at the local produce market, as a tote for the beach and for our picnic lunches.

#13 Let The Sun Shine In

Solar power is one of the cleanest energy sources on earth. Travelers can get on board with solar energy by using backpacks with a solar charger – like this one ! The eco friendly travel bags are perfect for sunny days at the beach, hiking on an epic trail or discovering a new city. The solar panel on the backpack harvests the energy – and will keep you powered throughout the day!

Eliminate Waste for More Eco Friendly Trips

Eco Travel Tips for a better Earth environment

When it comes to eco travel, there is no better way to be kind to Mother Earth on vacations than to cut down on consumption. We are sharing the best ways travelers can limit use of resources.

#14 Go Digital with Tickets

One way to become eco friendly while traveling is to ditch printed tickets – and the tourism industry is on board with the idea. Most transportation tickets (airlines, trains, car rentals) can be made online with absolutely no need to print.

Furthermore, many trip activities can be purchased online too (we recommend using Viator ) – and, in many cases, it is not necessary to print tickets.

#15 Leave the Little Bottles

It’s hard to resist swiping the cute travel amenities at hotels – until you consider how much waste they create. If you want to practice environmentally friendly tourism, then don’t hoard hotel supplies. In fact, it is better to just use what you packed for your trip in your reusable bottles instead.

#16 Eat What You Order

One of our favorite aspects of travel is eating local food – and we understand how easy it is to get carried away when you want to try everything on the menu. Food waste, however, is a big strain on resources. If your goal is to have an eco trip, then only order what you can eat – and box up any leftovers for later.

#17 Skip the Freebie Free-For-All

Airports, hotels and popular sites are almost always stocked with free pamphlets – and it is tempting to grab them all and sort them out later. The problem is that most of them end up in the trash. If you really want to travel eco friendly, think twice before snagging a free pamphlet.

At attractions – like museums and churches – the pamphlets can be extremely useful during your visit – and you should use them. However, instead of taking them with you, consider leaving the brochure behind for the next guest or using the recycle box provided.

#18 Become a Trash Hero on Your Trip

All travelers – whether participating in eco-conscious travel or not – should abide by the Leave No Trace rule. We just think it is the decent thing to do!

Eco travelers, however, can take it up a notch and become Trash Heroes by picking up trash when you come across it. In places like Thailand , for example, where trash often washes up on the beaches, we carry an extra bag to collect rubbish and help keep the shores clean for everyone.

#19 Understand the Rules of Recycling

Recycling has long been associated with being eco friendly and it’s something travelers should do, too. That said, it is important to know the recycling rules where you are visiting.

In Ljubljana , Slovenia (which earned the title of European Green Capital), for instance, there are strict rules about recycling – and it is important for travelers to know which products go in which bins. On the other hand, recycling efforts are less streamlined in other countries, like Vietnam , so visitors need to be aware of what can and cannot go into recycle receptacles.

#20 Support Locals with Your Souvenir Purchases

Tourists are easily lured into buying cheap, mass-produced trinkets – but many of these souvenirs are not earth friendly or directly beneficial to the community.

Instead, one of the sustainable travel tips is to help support the native community – and be a more conscious eco traveler – by purchasing souvenirs made by locals…with regional products.

Eco Trip Planning

Top Tips for being an Eco Traveler for the environment

We have outlined some top tips for making your trip more eco friendly – however, the best eco trips start with the planning process.

#21 Do Your Research

One of the best ways to get on board with eco traveling is to do prior research. With diligent effort, eco travelers can specifically seek out green hotels and eco resorts. Furthermore, tourists can look for eco-friendly activities and other environmentally friendly resources before arriving in at the destination.

#22 Unplug at Home

When we say, “Unplug at home,” we literally mean it! Before taking a big trip, make sure to unplug major power sources in your house – such as the toaster oven, microwave, TVs and sound systems – to save energy.

#23 Travel Deeper, Not Further

One of the eco friendly ways to travel is to plan longer trips to an entire region. Not only will it cut down on your air traffic emissions, but it will allow you to discover a place more deeply.

Additionally, you don’t have to travel far at all! Start exploring your own backyard – there are likely interesting places to go in your city, state or region.

#24 Choose Eco Friendly Travel Destinations

A great way to plan eco trips is to opt to visit an eco destination. We’ve already mentioned Slovenia as a top environmentally friendly country, but there are numerous eco travel destinations where visitors will notice a real effort toward the environment – like Iceland , The Netherlands , and New Zealand .

#25 Tread Lightly on Over-Touristed Locales

Over-tourism has a substantial impact on both the natural environment and local communities. In the height of the tourist season, places like Dubrovnik , Barcelona  and Glacier National Park are crushed with tourists.

To plan a more eco friendly trip, travelers can visit the same destinations outside of the tourist season. In fact, we prefer visiting popular places when there are fewer tourists and more locals, which often means lower prices as well!

To even further reduce the problem of over-tourism, consider alternate destinations altogether. Visit Sibenik instead of Dubrovnik, Choquequirao instead of Machu Picchu and North Cascades National Park rather than Glacier NP.

#26 Invest in Quality Eco Traveler Luggage

When it is time to purchase new luggage, buy a quality eco travel bag! Top brands for eco travel bags are Patagonia , Samsonite and Tumi . All three companies offer products made from recycled and sustainable materials.

If you are searching for an eco friendly travel backpack, we recommend going with a trusted brand like Osprey . Osprey has an All Mighty Guarantee that ensures your pack will last – plus they have a commitment to sustainable practices.

Deciding between Suitcase or Backpack? Find out which we choose – and why!

#27 Hit Up the Internet

Travel guidebooks can be fantastic resources – but do you really need to buy a book on an entire country when you are only going to one city?

Instead of purchasing a book, you can probably find the same – or better – information online. Check out our Travel Destinations Page and you will find in-depth travel guides for locations around the world.

If you are a paper person, consider checking out a book from the library instead of buying a paper copy. Not only is this an environmentally friendly travel tip, but it’s a good budget travel tip, too!

#28 Join Eco Friendly Tours

In your planning process, seek out ecotourism operators for the tours you want to take on your vacation. Many ecotourism tours focus on nature, local experiences and conservation efforts.

That said, at the beginning of this article, when we defined ‘What is an Eco Tour,’ we cautioned to do your research before booking – and we want to emphasize that point again.

Eco travel buzzwords are being used to describe tours that do not adhere to eco friendly practices; we have experienced this firsthand. We recommend using a trusted site, like Viator , where they offer honest customer reviews to find eco tours that fit your personal criteria.

#29 Take Ecotourism Vacations

To really immerse yourself in the best eco friendly vacations, consider booking your entire trip with one of the highly touted eco friendly travel companies.

Travel to the Galapagos with one of their Sustainable Travel Partners or go on a conservation adventure. Intrepid Travel is another one of the eco travel companies that is dedicated to ‘small group travel that makes a difference.’

#30 Offset Your Travel Carbon Footprint

When posed with the question, “ What is the most eco friendly way to travel? ” some might say the answer is to not travel at all. We disagree. While travel – no doubt – creates emissions and leaves a carbon footprint, we think travel is essential to better understanding the world.

In order to keep things in balance, travelers have options for offsetting the toll travel takes on the earth.

More Eco Friendly Air Travel

Worldwide, airlines have made big strides towards becoming more friendly toward the environment. Although all airplanes contribute a high amount of CO2 emissions, some airlines stand out for their efforts in becoming more green.

Virgin Atlantic, Air France/KLM and Alaska Airlines stand out for their green practices.

Use our tips for Booking the Best Flights before buying tickets!

Make a Carbon Offset Donation

Flight passengers who want to do more for the environment also have an option to offset their flight carbon footprint by making a donation to a reputable environmental agency.
