Hurricane Roars Through the Caribbean

A look at the destruction caused by Hurricane Beryl as it lashes its way across the region.

Hurricane Beryl battered Jamaica on Wednesday and was moving across the Cayman Islands on Thursday after leaving a trail of destruction through the Caribbean, resulting in at least seven deaths, houses destroyed and trees snapped in half.

The storm first hit Carriacou, a small island that is part of Grenada, on Monday morning where it flattened the island in just half an hour, while also causing extreme damage to neighboring Petite Martinique.

Carriacou is known for its coral reefs and diving spots, while people on Petite Martinique are mostly involved in fishing and boat building. The two islands have a combined population of at least 9,000 people.

The storm was an anomaly in what has already been an unusually busy storm season, which extends until the end of November. When it developed into a Category 4 storm on Sunday, it was the third major hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean in June — and the first time a Category 4 materialized this early there in the season.

The storm continued to set records, becoming the first ever Atlantic storm to grow into a Category 5 this early in the season, according to Philip Klotzbach , a Colorado State University meteorologist who specializes in tropical cyclones.

The storm’s rapid strengthening was a direct result of above-average sea surface temperatures, as well as a harbinger of what might be coming this hurricane season. A hurricane that intensifies faster can be more dangerous because it gives people in areas projected to be affected less time to prepare and evacuate.

Is your cruise or flight changing? How Hurricane Beryl is disrupting Caribbean travel

Several major cruise companies were forced to change current itineraries due to Hurricane Beryl.

Here is a rundown:

Royal Caribbean

Miami-based Royal Caribbean Group made the following changes to its itineraries:

▪ Celebrity Beyond’s June 29 sailing will swap Kralendijk, Bonaire with Oranjestad, Aruba, on July 2 and move Kralendijk, Bonaire to July 4.

▪ Icon of the Seas’ June 29 sailing will now visit Cozumel, Mexico, and Costa Maya, Mexico, instead of Philipsburg, St. Maarten, and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

▪ Grandeur of the Seas’ July 1 sailing will now visit Yucatan (Progresso), Mexico on Day 4 and Cozumel, Mexico, on Day 3.

▪ Wonder of the Seas’ June 30 sailing will now have a Sea Day on Day 5 instead of visiting Roatan, Honduras, and will enjoy a visit to Nassau, Bahamas, on Day 6, instead of visiting Costa Maya, Mexico.

▪ Harmony of the Seas’ June 30 sailing will now visit Cozumel, Mexico on Day 3 and Costa Maya, Mexico on Day 4, instead of Roatan, Honduras.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement that “we are closely monitoring the progression of Hurricane Beryl and are making adjustments to some of our Caribbean sailings for the comfort and safety of our guests and crew.” It said it would notify guests and travel advisors directly of any further changes.

Norwegian Cruise Line said it changed the itineraries for two ships, Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Breakaway, and sent a letter to guests.

▪ To its Norwegian Jade guests, Norwegian wrote in a Jun. 30, 2024 letter that it canceled calls to Falmouth, Jamaica, George Town, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico. It replaced them with San Juan, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The ship is scheduled to return to Cape Canaveral on July 6.

▪ For passengers on the Breakaway , the carrier said in a June 30 letter that it had chosen to take an alternative, safer route to circumvent the path of Beryl. “Despite our best efforts, and with the weather disturbances out of control, we have canceled our calls to Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.” The ship was scheduled to reach Roatan Bay Islands at 10 a.m. July 2 but was redirected to Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. Other changes were going to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The ship is scheduled to return to PortMiami on July 7.

Norwegian also said that shore excursions booked through NCL for those destinations were automatically canceled and guests can expect that a “full monetary refund of the fare paid will be issued to your onboard account.’

As of 3 p.m. July 2, Carnival had changed the following itineraries:

▪ Carnival Horizon will add a visit to Nassau, The Bahamas on Friday, July 5 instead of visiting Cozumel, Mexico on Thursday, July 4. The ship’s visit to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands on Wednesday, July 3 is canceled.

▪ Carnival Liberty is visiting Cozumel on Tuesday, July 2 instead of Friday, July 5.

MSC Cruises said it has not yet made any itinerary changes.

“At this time, we don’t foresee any itinerary changes for our U.S. vessels due to Hurricane Beryl if the storm maintains its projected path,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

Miami International Airport

At Miami International Airport as of 5:30 .p.m Tuesday, Hurricane Beryl led to seven canceled flights: two arrivals from San Juan and Barbados and five departures to Santo Domingo, Barbados and San Juan, according to Greg Chin, communications director at the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Still its overall percentage of on-time arrivals on July 2 was 86% and on-time departures was 78%, both well above its average.

It’s an improvement from Monday when seven arrivals and six departures were canceled. Affected islands were St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Barbados.

American Airlines issued a travel alert on Tuesday saying it would waive change fees for customers traveling through Cancun, Cozumel, Merida, and Tulum, Mexico. That’s if they are able to travel by July 10 and can make changes by July 5.

American Airlines operations in St. Vincent remain suspended due to airport closures. But the carrier has restarted operations in Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada, according to a statement sent by airline spokesperson Gianna Urgo.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

At FLL, the hurricane’s impact was less clear. JetBlue had one flight from Santo Domingo and one from Montego Bay, and both arrived at FLL during the day. There were arrivals still scheduled from Kingston at 9:17 p.m. and Montego Bay at 9:27 p.m. Airport officials advised travelers to call their airlines for the latest information.

Meanwhile, one departure left to Montego Bay. But another one scheduled at 9:30pm was canceled.

Carnival Vista - Galveston Port - Boarding Times

Hey Cruisers!!

I'm planning the day of road trip to the Port of Galveston for our September Vista Cruise. I haven't cruised since Coivd-19. We're platinum but aren't concerned about being on first. We're needing to pick up one of our companions in Waco the day of (long story) otherwise we would usually come in the night before.

So my question is, to assist in my itinerary for that morning; What have been the start of boarding times? What is the last time to get on board? How long has the boarding process been taking?

THANKS BESTIES

I gather from your inquiry, you plan on traveling the day of embarkation, with going to Waco first to pick up a friend, THEN drive down to Galveston. I hope you realize you have about a good 7 or 8 hour(or longer) drive in front of you to just get to Galveston. We live in Arlington and have interstate highway the entire trip, and it takes us a good 6 hrs & 30 min. And you don't have interstate highway the entire trip, unless you go the longgggg route.

But to answer your question, Carnival opens the doors starting around 10:30 am. BUT, that is not the boarding time. That's the port check in time. And that's IF the ship gets back to Galveston as per their stated arrival time(the real arrival time can vary because of a number of possible delays). Typically, the actual boarding time is around 11:00-11:30. I THINK Carnival cuts off accepting passengers to board at around 3:00 or so.

As always, YMMV.  Happy sailing! The Vista is beautiful ship with lots of things to do. We thoroughly enjoyed our 7 night on her back in August, 2021. As far as boarding goes, we chose a 1:30 check in time and their were no crowds at all, and didn't stop walking until we got on the ship...About 2pm.

With all due respect (and a little jest) HOW SLOW DO YOU DRIVE? From Fort Worth it takes us maybe five hours, six if we stop. Really though thank you for the information. We've decide to stay the night in Waco, then drive down that morning. Takes just a little of 3.5 hours to get to port, plus a Buccee's stop!!

The only cation I have is the effect of traffic and accidents. Just not too long ago a young family missed their cruise as there was an accident before Galveston that backed up traffic for hours. Without the accident she would have made it. I implore you to use the “Waze” app and keep an eye on hazards that delay you. Personally, driving that distance to arrive on time would give me major anxiety. Good luck.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Female cruise passengers lob chairs and drag each other to floor in huge fight

author image

The women fighting onboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship

A group of women onboard a cruise were caught on camera throwing chairs and punches at each other in a drunken brawl.

Video footage, taken by a bemused onlooker who just wanted a slice of pizza, shows the passengers warring in the early hours of the morning on the Carnival Paradise.

The ship, run by Carnival Cruise Line, was on its final night of a five-day cruise from the US to Central America when the ruckus broke out in a dining room.

In the clip, women can be seen hurling chairs, throwing punches, piling on top of each other and screaming.

WARNING: THE VIDEO BELOW CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE

The man who filmed it, fellow passenger Nick Richardson, can be heard shouting ‘Welcome to the mother f******g cruise’, before saying, ‘No, no, not me man’ as the brawl gets closer to him.

The dad-of-three, who was on the cruise with his family, later told the New York Post : ‘In my opinion, (it was) just a bunch of people on their last night, probably drank too much.

‘Obviously some kind of misunderstanding. They didn’t give a s**t who was watching.

The fight was between several women in one of the dining room

‘They didn’t care,’ he added. ‘They just kept going.’

Nick, who posted the video on YouTube, said he had walked into the dining room at around 3am to get some food when the fight started.

He can be heard in the video saying he just wanted a slice of pizza before bed, and at one point says, ‘Let’s all get some pizza,’ trying to calm the women down.

A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident and told the New York Post the ship’s security team had intervened.

The firm said, as is their policy ‘such behaviour’ is not tolerated and the guests would not be sailing with them again.

Nick said the brawl didn’t ruined the trip for him and his family and that they all had a fantastic time travelling to Honduras and Cozumel.

A passenger throws a chair

He has even booked to go on another Carnival cruise in the spring.

It’s not the first time a massive fight has broken out on a Carnival ship.

In 2022, 40-60 passengers got involved in bust-up on Carnival Magic on the last night of a Caribbean cruise.

According to a witness, it started as an argument between two people on the dance floor when one became jealous over a threesome.

Metro have contacted Carnival Cruise Line for comment on the latest incident.
