On March 18, 2021, Deadline first reported a new wave of prequel pitches was being considered by HBO, among which was a "young Corlys Velaryon " series. The report also said that Bruno Heller , known for his work on HBO's Rome , was attached as potential showrunner. [2]

On March 9, 2022, George R.R. Martin himself gave an update that the project was proceeding well:

This confirms that the project has advanced from the "pitch" phase to the pilot script phase, though it remains to be seen whether HBO will order a pilot to be filmed based on it.

Due to Startling Inc. removing The Sea Snake from their development list in October 2022, it was speculated that the series had been quietly rejected. [5] In December 2022, George R.R. Martin confirmed that some projects had been shelved, but did not specify which. [6] In April 2023, he stated that The Sea Snake is still in development. [7]

On December 31, 2023, Martin revealed that the series had developed into an animated project, referring to it as Nine Voyages . [1]

George R.R. Martin confirms Game of Thrones animated series 'Nine Voyages' in development — what we know so far

Betting big on animation is a smart move

Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon

Considering how big Game of Thrones was at its peak, it’s surprising that the franchise has only managed to produce one spin off — House of the Dragon . Though it isn’t for lack of trying, judging from reports. Back in 2022 a report claimed that at least four GoT spin-offs were being considered , and GoT creator George R.R. Martin just confirmed one will be switching to animation.

In fact, R.R. Martin says that “we now have three animated projects underway.” But there’s one that's particularly noteworthy.

The Game of Thrones author confirmed that the spin-off “9 Voyages” will be making the shift to animation on his “ Not a Blog ” blog. This is technically a spin-off from House of the Dragon, following Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) — also known as the Sea Snake. House Velaryon is known for its ships, and that may be why the show is apparently switching mediums.

Why animation could be the best option

Martin claims that the show itself would have to spend half of its time at sea, which would be “prohibitively expensive” in live action. Not just because of the ships and water, but also because it would see the action move to a different port city each week. So there’s no way of saving costs by building and reusing a set for the full season.

Animation can be pretty costly and time consuming too, as Martin notes, but claims that it gives a much better chance of “fully realizing” the show.

A switch to animation could be exactly what Game of Thrones needs to push the franchise to the next level. There are strict limitations on what a live action series can do, and there's only so much screen time a CGI dragon can have on a TV budget.

Not only does animation mean you can add fantastical elements to the Game of Thrones universe without the prohibitive CGI costs, it also means you can add some variety to the world. Considering 9 Voyages constantly changing location, it means showrunners can make each port seem totally unique — rather than just the same variations of gray stone buildings we've seen previously.

Martin even leads his blog post by saying many nice things about the animated series Blue Eyes Samurai. He noted that it's the kind of show you can enjoy even if you're not a fan of animated TV shows, especially if you like his work. That suggests animated Game of Thrones spin-offs may take some inspiration from Blue Eyes Samurai and other shows like it.

This isn't the first time Game of Thrones ditched live action

Animated sequences have already covered some of Westeros’s history as extra features on DVD and Blu-ray releases, while Martin himself notes that at least two other animated spin-offs are in early development.

None of them have actually been officially greenlit though, including 9 Voyages, which means they may never make it to TV screens. Martin has previously confirmed preliminary work on an animated show called “The Golden Empire” set in the mysterious Yi Ti, but not much else is known about that — and it’s equally unclear what the second animated show could be.

We’ve heard about Ten Thousand Ships, set 1,000 years before Game of Thrones, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Dunk and Egg novellas. My money would be on Ten Thousand Ships being the likely animation candidate, but there’s no way to know for sure. There’s an equal chance that this mysterious show could be something totally new.

We’ll just have to wait and see how this all pans out. In the meantime House of the Dragon season 2 is on the way, and will be debuting on HBO sometime later this year.

Game of Thrones' Nine Voyages Spinoff is Becoming Animated

The planned corlys velaryon-led show is leaving live-action and has set sail for the sea of animation..

Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon.

HBO’s House of the Dragon is keeping the Game of Thrones train going along, but it’s not the only spinoff for the fantasy series in the works. In a newly released blog looking back on 2023, author George R.R. Martin revealed he and HBO have a number of animated series in unofficial development—as in, they haven’t been greenlit yet, but he’s fairly positive they will be—and now one of those shows will be hopping over from the realm of live-action.

Suggested Reading

According to Martin on his Not a Blog blog, the upcoming series Nine Voyages is jumping over to animation, a move he “supports fully.” The reason for the shift is because of budgetary concerns: because half the show is planned to be set in the sea, a live-action version would’ve been “prohibitively expensive,” noted Martin. Animation can also be expensive, but with the medium, he said the show “have a lot better chance” of fully realizing the show.

Related Content

Voyages is set to focus on Corlys Velaryon , played by Steve Toussaint in Dragon . Corlys is known in-fiction as the Sea Snake, so named because of his ship, which is the most famous of the Velaryon fleet. The show’s scope is pretty big, according to Martin, and is set to span “from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there.” Again, he’s not 100% sure if Voyages will happen, but if all goes well, it and the other two unannounced animated shows will be in the works and end up on HBO and Max in the next few years. (And if that doesn’t work? Who knows, they may end up as graphic novels, if it can be helped.)

More animation is always a good thing, and if something great can be made from this hit fantasy franchise, all the more power to it. For Martin, it seems like his one goal with any of these projects is for them to be as great as Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai , which he took time to shout out in his blog. “I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as [that],” he said. “ Even if you don’t normally watch animation, give it a try. It’s terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you’ll love it.”

House of the Dragon will come back for season two in summer 2024.

3 Game of Thrones projects focusing on Flea Bottom, a warrior queen & a sea snake reportedly in the works

Three additional Game of Thrones shows are in various stages of development, according to a report from Deadline (confirmed by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter ). These projects — which are part of HBO’s plan to expand George R. R. Martin’s GoT universe — are in the early stages of development and focus on different times and places in the GoT world.

The one that is reportedly the most developed is a project called 9 Voyages . According to Deadline, this project already has a creative team on board including Martin himself and writer/producer Bruno Heller ( Pennyworth, Gotham ). The show would takes place at roughly the same time as House of the Dragon  — the GoT spinoff closest to production — and would focus on the great voyages of Corlys Velaryon. Aboard his ship,  Sea Snake , Velaryon traveled the known GoT globe including Pentos, Dragonstone, Lys, Tyrosh, and Myr, as well lands not previously traveled to like Yi Ti and the wealthy nation of Leng. Velaryon also tried to travel to the North in an attempt to find passage around the top of Westeros but was foiled by gigantic icebergs and frozen seas.

The second project is reported to take place in Flea Bottom, the poorest part of King’s Landing. While there are no details on when this show would take place in the GoT universe, there are several characters from the original show who came from Flea Bottom including Gendry (Joe Dempsie) and Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham). Those characters, however, would not likely be in the show if it takes place after the events of Game of Thrones , as they both moved on to Lordships in the original series.

The last project is 10,000 Ships , which takes place 1,000 years before the events in the original series. The show would follow the journey of Princess Nymeria (the namesake for Arya’s direwolf) as she and her remaining people traveled from Essos to Dorne after their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War.

These three projects are still in the very early stages, and the GoT universe will likely see its first expansion with other shows farther along in development. House of the Dragon , which stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Matt Smith, is the farthest along and is set to go into production this April. Two other projects — the GoT animated series in the works at HBO Max, and the Don Quixote-like Tales of Dunk & Egg — also appear to be in the later stages of development than the three projects reported on today.

While it’s still unclear whether any of these new projects will move forward, one thing is certain: HBO remains committed to building out the GoT universe.

There Are 3 New Game Of Thrones Spinoffs In The Works

9 Voyages , Flea Bottom , & 10,000 Ships are reportedly being developed by HBO Max.

'Game of Thrones' for HBO

It’s been close to two years since George R. R. Martin’s colossally successful fantasy series Game Of Thrones came to its dramatic ending and there’s been a dragon-shaped hole in our lives ever since. But some exciting news for fans of the franchise just dropped, as there are three new Game Of Thrones spinoffs in the works in addition to the confirmed HBO series House of the Dragon , which begins filming in the UK in April.

Per Deadline, 9 Voyages , Flea Bottom , and 10,000 Ships are being developed by HBO Max — however, the publisher is yet to officially comment.

The prequels will be set hundreds of years before the events in GoT and will take place throughout various kingdoms across George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe.

Rome and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller is said to be the creative mind behind 9 Voyages, which, of the three spin-offs, is at the furthest point in terms of development. 9 Voyages is expected to follow the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, also know as the Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon, aboard the Sea Snake ship. Per the Hollywood Reporter , the character also appears in the upcoming House of the Dragon , where he’s played by actor Steve Toussaint — so there’s potential for a future crossover.

10,000 Ships tell the story of a legendary warrior Queen named Princess Nymeria, who founded Dorne, one of the seven kingdoms (the one with the warmer climate and lots of sexy desert attire). Fans of the franchise will remember Arya Stark named her direwolf after the legendary princess, a hero who existed 1,000 years before her time.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the third project, Flea Bottom , is set in the notorious King's Landing slum, consisting of a maze of tight streets in the capitol city where characters like Davos Seaworth and Gendry Baratheon were born.

HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told Deadline that there are “a lot of opportunities” for more stories to be told from the franchise.

“We are talking about other areas that make sense as well. George R.R. Martin’s world is so big and what’s interesting about it, not only is it big but he’s got a lot of road maps in terms of history,” said Bloys. “So, one of the great things about House of the Dragon is that’s an established history that leads you to Game of Thrones the show, and there is a lot of little branches. There is a lot of opportunities and stories to tell.”

He added: “The good news with the prequels is that there is history that George has laid out. We are working with George, it would really be something we talk about with him but for right now, the prequels land themselves to it because of the really expansive history that George laid out in his world.”

Meanwhile, House of the Dragon , starring Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Paddy Considine and Matt Smith , is expected to launch in 2022 . Based on the book of the same name, the series follows the story of the powerful House Targaryen family and the “epic civil war that tore Westeros apart” more than 300 years before.

Want More Game of Thrones Prequels? Great, HBO Is Working on Three

voyage game of thrones

Some people might be content with HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequels House of the Dragon and Tales of Dunk and Eggs , what with their packed cast and fantasy adventuring respectively, but not you. You need more, which is ostensibly why the network is reportedly developing the concepts for three more Game of Thrones prequels, according to the Hollywood Reporter. One series, from Rome creator Bruno Heller, has the working title of 9 Voyages and would follow the story of Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, Lord of the Tides, and an extremely busy guy, seeing as how he’s already appearing in House of the Dragon, played by Small Axe and In the Long Run actor Steve Toussaint.

The other projects reportedly in development include 10,000 Ships , about the adventures of warrior queen Princess Nymeria, “a revered ancestor of House Martell who founded of the kingdom of Dorne,” and a show which takes place in the mean streets of King’s Landing’s Flea Bottom, “the maze of tight streets in the capitol city where characters like Davos Seaworth and Gendry Baratheon were born.” There, now you never have to watch a TV show that isn’t in some way connected to Game of Thrones . You couldn’t if you tried! This is like five hours of television a week, and these are just the prequels we know about…so far.

All the Game Of Thrones spin-off series going ahead - and all those doomed to be cancelled

Game Of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of recent times (although don’t mention that finale ), and so it’s natural that TV bigwigs have considered ways to capitalise on the success.

The HBO series ended in 2019, after eight years, with 73 episodes broadcast over eight seasons and received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards. Based on George RR Martin ’s fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire (the first book was titled A Game of Thrones), it was adapted into Game of Thrones by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

The series was widely praised for the performances from actors including Kit Harington as Jon Snow, and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, character arcs, and movie-like production, and left the fandom wanting more.

Since it came to a close, there has been talk about many spin-offs to continue the fantasy realm.

Out of the many ideas, some are airing, some are in development, and others were over before they began…

House of the Dragon – Season 2 airing now

The very successful prequel, House of the Dragon , has recently returned with their second season , with their leading cast members Matt Smith  and  Emma D’Arcy back in the centre of the action.

The series, which began in 2022, is set roughly  200 years before the Game of Thrones characters Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen  are even born.

House of the Dragon’s first season covered the build-up to a civil war as theTargaryen and Hightower families bid to win  the Iron Throne , and received eight Emmy nominations, and a Golden Globe win for Best Drama Series.

Co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed he’s already planning season three.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Set for 2025 release

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George RR Martin’s The Tales of Dunk and Egg, is filming.

The stories follow Dunk – aka Ser Duncan the Tall, the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard – and Egg, the future king Aegon V Targaryen.

It’s based around 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, but 100 years after House of the Dragon.

It is set to be available to watch from 2025, with Peter Claffey playing Dunk. Filming has taken place in Ireland with Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell also in the cast.

‘A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg,’ the synopsis teases.

‘Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends,’

The Nine Voyages – Set to become an animation

In March 2021,  Deadline  reported that three prequels were being developed – of which Nine Voyages was said to be the most ‘fully formed’.

Nine Voyages would follow the story of Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake.

Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon, Corlys was known as one of the greatest seafarers of the Seven Kingdoms and had close ties with the Targaryen family. Specifically, he was the husband of Rhaenys and hand to Queen Rhaenyra.

George has since said it will be an animated series instead of live-action.

Lord Corlys appears in House of the Dragon, played by It’s A Sin and Small Axe star Steve Toussaint.

Ten Thousand Ships – In development

The show is believed to be focused on legendary warrior Princess Nymeria – the founder of Dorne, and ancestor of House Martell – whose story is so fabled that Arya Stark named her direwolf after her. The name comes from the number of boats, that accompanied her as she made the voyage from Essos to Dorne.

It’s thought this show would be set around a millennium before the main events of Game of Thrones.

‘We’re all very excited about this one … though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for 10,000 ships, 300 dragons, and those giant turtles,’ wrote George in a blog post.

Aegon’s Conquest – Early days

The series is set to focus on the  founder and first king of the Targaryen dynasty , Aegon.

While never seen in the series, Aegon I Targaryen was the first king to sit on the Iron Throne and was mentioned throughout the seasons, as well as in  House of the Dragon .

A warlord, Aegon had three great dragons and a small army before he went on to invade and then unify six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros in the War of Conquest.

After that, he went on to found the city of King’s Landing, with  some of his descendants  including Viserys, Daemon, Rhaenyra, Aerys and Daenerys.

The show would tell the story of how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westerosm with the exception of Dorne.

In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty.

These events took place approximately 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

‘That one is very early days where I’m currently writing the script, currently doing a lot of great back and forth with George,’ screenwriter Mattson Tomlin told Entertainment Weekly.

Snow – Off the table

The potential Game of Thrones spin-off centred on Jon Snow  is no longer in development . The actor revealed that it’s  ‘off the table,’  due to a struggle to find the right story.

After the main series ended in 2019, fans were elated when it was reported three years later that a sequel was being considered.

The HBO show would have allowed viewers to catch up with Jon, who was sentenced to the Night’s Watch after killing Daenerys to stop her from causing further destruction.

While there would have been many avenues to explore in this next chapter of the fictional character’s life, it wasn’t to be.

Kit stated why he’d never previously spoken about the project until now: ‘I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.’

While speaking to  Screen Rant , he explained that while in development they ‘look at every angle’ to ‘see whether it’s worth it’. They’ve now concluded that it isn’t and so it’s ‘off the table’.

‘We all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being,’ he said.

‘There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.’

The Golden Empire – A possible animation

Alongside, The Nine Voyages, The Golden Empire and two unnamed projects were discussed as animations.

George shared that The Golden Empire (working title) would be set in Yi Ti, and added: ‘I think the art and animation is just going to be beautiful. I would tell you more if I could.’

He later said that only two of the four animations would be going ahead, but didn’t state if The Golden Empire was one.

Bloodmoon – Cancelled

Prequel Bloodmoon became its own legend after being mysteriously axed after just one pilot episode.

Fans of the Westeros fantasy series were gearing up for the Naomi Watts-led prequel series following its highly publicised filming, only for it to be scrapped.

‘The series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know,’ the synopsis read.

It’s rumoured that Naomi would have been playing Florys the Fox, who, according to Westeros folklore, kept three husbands (none of whom knew about each other).

Before it was canned, scenes were shot in Ireland, with a cast that included Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, and Josh Whitehouse.

Flea Bottom – Never confirmed

The title inspired by the nickname given to the slums around King’s Landing was rumoured to be an early idea after the end of Game of Thrones. However, HBO never confirmed its existence.

Robert’s Rebellion – Hopes quashed

Set just 17 years before, Game of Thrones kicks off, it would have been based around Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, and Jon Arryn’s attempts to overthrow ‘the Mad King’ Aerys II Targaryen.

The war is what ended the Targaryen’s reign in Westeros, and perfectly set up Daenerys’s narrative.

The series would have introduced us to young versions of Ned Stark, Robert Baratheon, Tywin Lannister, and Jaime Lannister.

However, George quashed fans’ hopes that the show would ever be made in a 2017 blog post.

‘We’re not doing Robert’s Rebellion either. I know thousands of you want that, I know there’s a petition… but by the time I finish writing A Song of Ice & Fire, you will know every important thing that happened in Robert’s Rebellion.’

He continued: ‘There would be no surprises or revelations left in such a show, just the acting out of conflicts whose resolutions you already know. That’s not a story I want to tell just now; it would feel too much like a twice-told tale.’

House of the Dragon airs on Sky Atlantic and NOW, with new episodes released on Mondays in the UK from 2am.

HBO is now working on at least five ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff shows

While series like WandaVision and The Mandalorian have attracted large audiences with their connections to popular IP, no TV show has been able to match the near-universal appeal of Game of Thrones since it wrapped up in 2019. It might not have concluded that way that most fans would have preferred, but its popularity can’t be overstated. It was no surprise when HBO announced that it would be developing a prequel series set in the same world — the biggest surprise was that even more spinoffs weren’t in the works. Well, it turns out that they are now.

The 9 Voyages series will center around Corlys Velaryon, a seafarer who made nine great voyages to Essos aboard his ship, the Sea Snake. He sailed to many familiar locales and places we never saw in the show, from Oldtown and Pentos to Yi Ti and Leng. He was born about 250 years before the events of Game of Thrones , and after becoming incredibly wealthy during his ninth voyage, he took over as the head of House Velaryon.

The Flea Bottom series will unsurprisingly be set in the slums of King’s Landing, which is where Arya Stark holed up after escaping the Red Keep. It’s not clear what the plot of this series would be, but as Deadline notes, a number of notable characters are originally from Flea Bottom, including Davos Seaworth and Gendry.

These three ideas are in addition to the prequel series House of the Dragon , which is set to begin filming soon, and a series focusing on Dunk and Egg — two beloved characters that starred in their own books.

Interactive Game of Thrones Map

This is a map of the world depicted in the novel series A Song of Ice & Fire and the TV adaptation, A Game of Thrones . The website is designed to display useful information on top of the map layer and link to additional details on the Westeros.org wiki site .

If you haven't finished reading the novels or watching the shows, you can hide any details that might spoil the plot. Simply drag the slider in the top-right corner to the last chapter or episode that you've completed. You can move the slider with arrow buttons in order to animate the characters' paths. Keep in mind that the slider only controls this map; any page you may open on the wiki site may contain spoilers .

If you'd like to share this map with others and point them to a specific location, hold down the Ctrl button while you click on the map. You will be given a URL that will automatically center the map on that point. (e.g. Winterfell )

The map layer used in this website was drawn by theMountainGoat based on previous work by Tear of the Cartographer's Guild . The map interface is based on the Google Maps API , with custom tiles generated by GMap Image Cutter Version 1.42 and arrows using code from Bill Chadwick . He was so emotionally attached to the characters that he wrote the rest of the book first, then that chapter last. Executive Producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss , upon reading it, declared it was one of the major reasons they decided to option the books for a television series. The next Game of Thrones spinoff has finally started filming, so let's hope they don't can it before we get the chance to watch it

Will this latest attempt at a prequel make it past a set photo?

A first look at the next Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been revealed, as filming finally gets going.

Game of Thrones, once upon a time, was one of the most popular television shows around. It's no surprise that Warner Bros. wanted to continue to capitalise on that success with spin-offs and the like, but so far it's only managed to get one off the ground, the also quite popular House of the Dragon . But yesterday, the official Game of Thrones Twitter account showed a set photo of Peter Claffey in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, an upcoming prequel set one hundred years before the events of the main series.

Set a century before #GameOfThrones , the new @HBO Original drama series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is now in production. Coming soon to @StreamOnMax . pic.twitter.com/CS7tX7iND2 — Game of Thrones (@GameOfThrones) June 18, 2024

An official logline explains, "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."

This series is based on author George R. R. Martin's novella The Hedge Knight, and Ser Duncan the Tall and co will have some run-ins with several Targaryen's, some of which will be played by Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Bertie Carvel (The Crown), and Sam Spruell (Fargo). Rounding out the cast is Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) and Daniel Ings (Sex Education).

Of course, while the fact that production has started on the prequel show, don't get your hopes up just yet. A show codenamed Blood Moon, another prequel, was cancelled a while back , even though an entire pilot was shot. And earlier this year the Jon Snow spin-off was also canned , so overall the broader Game of Thrones universe hasn't gone so well for HBO. Maybe A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will fare a bit better, but I'm not placing any bets. There's no release date on the prequel series just yet, but it'll be coming soon to Max.

When is the next Game of Thrones book coming out?

It's titled the winds of winter and has haunted author george rr martin for over a decade..

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

13 years we've been waiting for the sixth book in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga, officially titled The Winds of Winter , but with the second Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms now in production at HBO , is it simply a case of the author prioritising TV watchers over readers?

In a blog post published earlier this month , Martin announced that he'd soon be heading over to Belfast in order to "visit the set, meet the cast, and take in some jousting" while the US network grinds away on its adaptation of his novella The Hedge Knight - starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire Aegon V Targaryen.

This insight is just the latest example of the beloved fantasy writer travelling the globe to enjoy the fruits of his labour, and fair play to Martin for doing so, but there's no getting away from the fact that his patient readers would rather him simply sit at a desk and complete the epic series he first began writing in 1991.

When will The Winds of Winter hit shelves?

Back when fifth book A Dance with Dragons was released in 2011, Martin estimated that it would be up to four years before its sequel The Winds of Winter arrived. It subsequently took two years for him to reach the quarter-way mark in terms of pages.

End-of-year deadlines agreed between himself and his publisher zipped by during 2015 and 2016, but it was then revealed in April 2018 that his House Targaryen-centred prequel Fire & Blood (which HBO's House of the Dragon is based on) was fast-tracked, putting his work on The Winds of Winter even further behind.

Skip to various 2022 chats with talkshow host Stephen Colbert , Martin announced that around three-quarters of the book had been put to paper and that it was 400-500 pages away from completion.

By November 2023, though, he'd made practically no progress, meaning it's impossible to speculate when he'll get this next stage of the story signed, sealed and delivered.

To make matters worse (depending on how you define 'worse'), Martin recently promised more Dunk & Egg stories, when really you could argue he should be fully focussed on getting this 13-year beast off his back.

Blogging just last month, Martin wrote of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: "The show will make its debut next year... and if it does well, THE SWORN SWORD and THE MYSTERY KNIGHT will follow. By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish THE WINDS OF WINTER)."

Going off this particular update, should AKOTSK prove a major hit with viewers in 2025, HBO will potentially want to scatter adaptations of Dunk & Egg adventures The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight across the following four years - allowing a two-year break between each series and ending with a 2029 finale - which would mean that he's currently aiming to turn in The Winds of Winter in the next five years.

Admissions of writing struggles in 2023 and 2020

Speaking to Bangcast last Christmastime , Martin lamented his slower output compared to the likes of author Bernard Cornwell, whose work provided the basis for Viking drama The Last Kingdom.

"I wish I could write as fast as [Cornwell] but I'm 12 years late on this damn novel and I'm struggling with it," he admitted. "I have like 1,100 pages written but I still have hundreds more pages to go. It's a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should've started writing smaller books when I began this but it's tough. That's the main thing that dominates most of my working life."

Three years prior to that, while revealing that he'd been "visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah" on the page, Martin suggested he'd been suffering "bad days".

"But all in all I am pleased with the way things are doing," he caveated. "I do wish they would go faster, of course. Way way back in 1999, when I was deep in the writing of A STORM OF SWORDS, I was averaging about 150 pages of manuscript a month.

"I fear I shall never recapture that pace again. Looking back, I am not sure how I did it then. A fever indeed."

What juice has Martin spilled about The Winds of Winter?

In conversation with Smarter Travel a year after the publication of A Dance with Dragons, the 75-year-old suggested that The Winds of Winter would have a fierce start.

"There were a of cliffhangers at the end of A Dance with Dragons. Those will be resolved very early," he shared. "I'm going to open with the two big battles that I was building up to, the battle in the ice [between the forces of Stannis Baratheon and Roose Bolton in and around Winterfell] and the battle at Meereen — the battle of Slaver's Bay [between Daenerys Targaryen's army and the slavers of Yunkai across the Narrow Sea]."

Four years later while attending the Guadalajara International Book Fair, he paid tribute to his 20-year warning that winter was coming during a discussion surrounding the next book.

"I've been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming. Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for," teased Martin. "Some of the characters [are] in very dark places. Things get worse before they get better, so things are getting worse for a lot of people."

The next Game of Thrones spin-off will release in 2025, George RR Martin confirms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming soon

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms first look

Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin has revealed the release window for the next spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – and it's very soon.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, the first of which is titled The Hedge Knight, and is another prequel to the original series of books (and the TV show). It's not quite as far back on the timeline as House of the Dragon, though. It takes place 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, which means it's 100 years on from House of the Dragon.

"Filming started last week in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where much of the original GAME OF THRONES was shot," Martin wrote on his Not a Blog site. "Based on my novella The Hedge Knight, the new show will debut early next year, in 2025. Only six episodes for this one.  A novella is considerably shorter than a novel (particularly one of my novels), so there's less source material."

A first look at the new show was recently released , which shows star Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall amid a crowd. The official synopsis teases that the show will follow "a young, naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."

Is A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms based on a book by George R.R. Martin?

Yes. There are three  Dunk & Egg  fantasy novellas, as they are known to fans. The Hedge Knight is the first of them. The first installment had the working title of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight .

Who has been cast in A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight ?

In his May 21 blog post, the author revealed that “most of the auditions — not all, but most — are done, and we should be able to announce some more cast members shortly.” He listed cast roles as “Tanselle, Steely Pate, Baelor Breakspear, the Laughing Storm, a couple of Fossoways, Aerion Brightflame (boo, hiss), Prince Maekar and the rest.”

Has A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms found a director yet?

Yes, as of Martin’s May 21 blog. He wrote that Owen Harris who directed Martin’s “all time favorite episode of Black Mirror “San Junipero,” will direct three of the six episodes.

On June 18, 2024, it was announced that Sarah Adina Smith, who recently directed a few episodes of Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry , will direct the other three episodes.

If you don’t know the characters, Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom. Laverne & Shirley. Abbott & Costello. Beavis & Butthead. So, no. We want “knight” in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.”

Who is creating A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight ?

Ira Parker, a writer on Season 1 of House of the Dragon , will also write and exec produce — He wrote the pilot script. On House of the Dragon , Parker wrote the fourth episode, titled “King of the Narrow Sea.” According to Martin, “That’s the one where Prince Daemon returns to King’s Landing after conquering the Stepstones, and takes Princess Rhaenyra down into the stews of Flea Bottom.”

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal is also an executive producer, which is a good sign for the show. Condal succeeded where others failed — out of half-dozen or so writers who took a stab at co-creating the first Game Of Thrones prequel with Martin, Condal’s House of the Dragon was the one to make it to series at HBO. Vince Gerardis, Owen Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw will also executive produce.

Will A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms be true to Martin’s work?

Yes, according to Martin.

“The Dunk & Egg novellas are fully-fleshed narratives more like the novels of A Song of Fire & Ice than the imaginary history of Fire & Blood ,” wrote Martin in 2023. “The stories are right there on the page, and our goal is to produce faithful adaptations of those tales for the screen.”

He posted a video of young star Dexter Sol Antell shaving his head to transform into Egg .

How much will The Hedge Knight cost to produce?

One would expect a similar investment this time around, but Martin said in 2023 that he thought Season 1 of The Hedge Knight might be six episodes. House of the Dragon S1 had 10 episodes, so this latest adaptation of Martin’s work might be a little less costly.

'House of the Dragon'

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms was announced a year ago, and there was already a pilot script. Why isn’t it further along?

Martin has stressed that the development of the adaptations of his books takes time. He said that back in 2016 he pitched HBO two ideas, “the Dance of the Dragons, which in due time became  House of the Dragon … and Dunk & Egg. That was seven years ago. (I can hardly believe it myself). The lesson there is that development takes time.”

What’s more, while Martin said in April, 2023 that writing on the first season was “well underway,” production on  Knight of the Seven Kingdoms  was shut down for five months last year due to the dual Hollywood strikes.

How can I watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ?

It will, of course, be on Max once the series is ready. The service has three price tiers: Max Ad Light, which goes for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and allows two concurrent streams; Max Ad Free will be priced at $15.99 a month, or $149.99 a year, and will also allow two concurrent streams; and Max Ultimate Ad Free which costs $19.99 a month, or $199.99 a year, and allows access to four concurrent streams.

In addition, WBD’s other current epic literary adaptation,  House of the Dragon , is available not only on the company’s streaming service, but also to cable subscribers on HBO.

If you’re in Canada, WBD has  struck a multi-year licensing agreement  with Crave for the likes of  Harry Potter ,  Game of Thrones ,  the  DC  Universe and  HBO  content.

When Will A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms be released?

Zaslov said on the earnings call that The Hedge Knight will debut on Max in “late 2025.” That gives the streamer with GOT-related series in back-to-back years, with the launch of  House of the Dragon  Season 2 June 16.

How many episodes are planned for The Hedge Knight?

Martin mentioned six episodes on his blog, meaning the prequel series will be shorter than the 10-episode first season of House of the Dragon as well as the average of the eight seasons of Game of Thrones .

Will the other Dunk & Egg novellas be adapted?

There are two more novellas, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight , that were published in various anthologies. All three of the narratives were later published together under the collective title A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms .

There’s no official word on The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight from HBO or Time Warner Discovery but, Martin has said, “If The Hedge Knight turns out as well as we hope it will, our hope would be to go on and adapt The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight as well.”

Warner Bros. Discovery is hungry for more. In a November, 2022 earnings call Zaslav stressed , “We’re going to have a real focus on franchises,” before going on to name check the Game of Thrones / House of the Dragon  juggernaut as “a big example of that.”

Yes. A lot of them, if Martin has anything to say about it. And we even have titles and some idea of what they’re about.

“Before we reach the end of the published stories,” the author said of production on the TV series, “I will need to find time to write all the other Dunk & Egg novellas that I have planned. There are… gulp… more of them than I had once thought. There’s The Village Hero and the Winterfell story, the one with the She-Wolves [ The She-Wolves of Winterfell w/t], and maybe I need to write that Dornish adventure too to slip in between The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword , and after that there are… ah… more.”

“More” includes stories with working titles such as The Sellsword ,  The Champion ,  The Kingsguard , and  The Lord Commander , according to the author.

As he wrote on his blog , Martin does hope to finish The Winds of W i nter before the other Dunk & Egg stories, though.

A Song of Ice and Fire - A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) : Clothbound edition

Voyager Classics – timeless masterworks of science fiction and fantasy.

A beautiful clothbound edition of the internationally acclaimed A Game of Thrones – the first volume in the greatest epic work of the modern age.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lust and intrigues; to the vast frozen north, where a 700-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond.

As Warden of the North, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must…and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty.

The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, a vengeance-mad boy has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities beyond the sea. Heir of the mad Dragon King deposed by Robert, he claims the Iron Throne.

In the game of thrones, you win or you die.

HBO teases, "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros: A young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg."

The network continues, "Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."

HBO also announced that Finn Bennett will appear as Aerion Targaryen; Bertie Carvel plays Baelor Targaryen, and Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

Game of Thrones cast at a battle

Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy in House of the Dragon

Peter Claffey in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Lord Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon

Princess Nymeria

Aegon I Targaryen illustration

Jon Snow

Game of Thrones landscape

Alongside, The Nine Voyages, The Golden Empire and two unnamed projects were discussed as animations.

George shared that The Golden Empire (working title) would be set in Yi Ti, and added: ‘I think the art and animation is just going to be beautiful. I would tell you more if I could.’

He later said that only two of the four animations would be going ahead, but didn’t state if The Golden Empire was one.

Bloodmoon – Cancelled

All the Game Of Thrones spin-off series going ahead - and all those doomed to be cancelled

Game Of Thrones landscape

The title inspired by the nickname given to the slums around King’s Landing was rumoured to be an early idea after the end of Game of Thrones. However, HBO never confirmed its existence.

Robert’s Rebellion – Hopes quashed

Kit Harington as Jon Snow and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones
