What Requirements Do I Need to Meet to Apply and Be Accepted to a College for Travel and Tourism? 

You have to keep in mind that colleges have different admission requirements. For example, one college might require you to submit a resume in support of your application, while another college might not have that requirement.

Even though each school is different, it’s still possible to outline a list of common requirements that many travel and tourism colleges have for prospective students. For example, common admissions requirements include the following:

• Submitting an application for admission
• Submitting an application fee
• Providing high school transcripts or proof of obtaining a GED
• Passing basic tests in math and language arts or providing satisfactory scores on the ACT or SAT

Remember, the specific requirements vary depending on the type of degree you want to pursue. For example, if you want to enroll in an associate’s degree program, the school will likely not require that you have a specific amount of college credits to transfer into the program.

However, a bachelor’s degree program may or may not require you to earn an associate degree. Master’s degree programs almost always require applicants to have completed a bachelor’s before enrollment.

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests.

The art and science of hosting strangers is an essential skill for people working in many kinds of businesses, including airlines, casinos, cruise ships, festivals, hotels and restaurants.

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests. Cultivating that marketable skill set is the goal of associate, bachelor's and graduate programs in hospitality management.

What a Hospitality Management Degree Is and What Classes It Requires

The goal of any course of study in hospitality management is to train people to create and maintain spaces where others will immediately feel at home.

“Understanding how to take care of the customer is a foundational aspect of the hospitality discipline,” Angela Ramsey, senior director of communication at the University of Nevada—Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, explained in an email.

Hospitality management degrees are, foremost, degrees in business, says Michael Sabitoni, chair of the food and beverage management department and the international travel and tourism studies department at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. They include classes in accounting, finance, human resources, law and technology, he says.

However, unlike a general business degree, a hospitality degree typically includes specialized coursework focusing on the hospitality industry, such as classes on food service business operations, event management principles, and hotel and resort leadership, Sabitoni says. An overview class about tourism is also typically included in hospitality management programs, and industry internships are often mandatory, he adds.

Many hospitality degree programs require students to participate in experiential learning by helping to operate a student-run hotel or restaurant. They may also contain classes on:

• Eco-tourism or sustainable travel
• Global tourism and special considerations involved with international trips
• Customer service protocols
• Assessing the quality of guest experiences
• Specific types of hospitality establishments, such as country clubs, golf courses, resorts, stadiums, timeshares or theme parks
• Nuances involved in planning certain kinds of events, such as conventions or weddings
• Concerns that face certain demographics of customers, including women and people of color
• Various types of tourism, including business trips and visits to cultural destinations or historical sites

Top Undergraduate Schools With Hospitality Management Majors

Many U.S. colleges and universities allow undergraduates to major in hospitality management, including multiple nationally renowned academic institutions. Cornell University of New York, an Ivy League college, has a school devoted to hospitality.

Exceptional hospitality programs are often based in major metropolitan areas that attract significant tourism. For example, New York University and Boston University in Massachusetts offer a hospitality management degree.

How to Know if a Hospitality Management Degree Is Right for You

An interest in the food and beverage sector, a love for travel or an interest in entertaining people may lead someone to consider pursuing a degree in hospitality management. But prospective students should be aware that the hospitality sector has leadership roles for people with all kinds of interests and personalities.

Though some managerial positions in the hospitality industry are customer-facing jobs that require significant people skills, there are also back-of-the-house managerial jobs that concentrate on logistics, Sabitoni says.

Significant cultural awareness and strong communication abilities are essential in hospitality. Foreign language skills are also valuable but not mandatory, Sabitoni says.

What You Can Do With a Hospitality Management Degree

Hospitality programs are designed to train future leaders in the sector.

“It can include anything within the hospitality vertical, from hotel investment companies to real estate firms to our big brands which are the Marriotts, the Hiltons, the Four Seasons, to data analytics companies to Googles to Amazons,” says Kate Walsh, dean of the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell. “Anything that touches hospitality as a part of their business product is something where our students get involved.”

Real estate investment firms often invest in hotel buildings, so people with degrees in hospitality management sometimes find jobs in the real estate sector, Walsh says. Alumni of hospitality management programs sometimes become management consultants who concentrate on assisting companies in the hospitality industry, she adds.

Executive and director roles in the industry typically require at least a bachelor's degree. Many high-level leadership positions at U.S. hospitality firms pay annual salaries above $70,000, according to an article published by Monster.com, a job website.

In 2020, graduates of Cornell's Nolan School had an average base salary of slightly over $69,000 and an average bonus of nearly $15,000, according to the school's employment report .

Considerations for Potential Hospitality Students

Aspiring hospitality managers should be aware of trends that may affect them when they enter the industry, experts say.

This sector has severe labor shortages at hotels and restaurants, many of which laid off workers due to pandemic-related safety measures and now have struggled to replace those workers even after raising wages.

Because of these staffing concerns, many hospitality companies have introduced initiatives to recruit and retain talented staff, improve working conditions, increase job satisfaction and reduce employee turnover, Walsh says.

When comparing hospitality programs, prospective students should investigate whether those programs include experiential learning opportunities, experts say, noting that hands-on projects are one of the best ways to gain hospitality skills. It’s also optimal if hospitality schools offer courses on design, which can inform aesthetic choices about how a hospitality venue looks, according to experts.

“I think the industry needs innovative thinkers," Walsh says. "They need people who think big culturally, who are comfortable with different modes of work, so it’s a great time to join the industry. The industry is trying to be extremely intentional in providing compelling career paths.”

Arizona State University

Students will be able to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management with a concentration in travel and tourism. They will be studying this at the Goodwin College School of Technology and Professional Studies.

The school’s diverse student body reflects its strong commitment to international business and tourism outside of the United States. Students will study four fundamentals of business management: 

• Customer service
• Innovative management
• International operations

Students are well acquainted with management skills by the end of the undergraduate degree. They will also have a firm grasp of hospitality law and international tourism. They even dabble in commercial food production and safety measures.

Purdue University

Purdue offers a Bachelor’s of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management. This 120-credit hour tourism degree program will equip students to transition seamlessly into the varied tourism sector. By the end of the undergraduate degree, students will be able to join cruise lines, theme parks, and become hotel managers. 

Purdue also includes an intensive paid internship program. It requires its students to complete over 400 hours of fieldwork to finish their bachelor’s degree. By the end of the bachelor’s degree, graduates will have a well-rounded education geared toward the tourism sector.

What Can I Do with a Travel and Tourism Degree? 

Hotel or Lodging Manager

These individuals ensure that guests staying at their hotel or lodging have had a pleasant experience. This is ideal for those who have thrived in customer service. They also make sure the entire operation is running smoothly and efficiently. This is where keen business management skills come into play.

A manager trains staff members, sets budgets, and ensures the satisfaction of guests. It also helps to be well-versed in social media to promote your business or place of employment further.

Becoming a hotel and lodging manager is not a career path for the faint of heart. But if you are hardworking by nature and like a challenge, a hotel manager can be your thing.

Event Manager

Event managers are masters in planning and hosting a wide array of events. These could range from trade shows, conventions, and more. Event managers use their marketing skills to promote an event, making sure clients’ have a fantastic stay. They also ensure that a client’s brand is recognizable and accessible.

Their list of responsibilities is long, but if you have a knack for business management, becoming an event planner is perfect.

Travel Agent

This seems like an obvious career choice when considering a travel and tourism degree. Travel agents help those who have found themselves bitten by the travel bug find their ideal destination. Travel agents use international tourism knowledge to pinpoint the best parts of a specific city or country. They help clients find the best restaurants, theme parks, and landmarks to visit.

Travel agents don’t usually need a bachelor’s degree. A high school diploma or equivalent can generally get you the job. These jobs can either be in an office or done entirely remotely. This is a reliable option for those who haven’t obtained their undergraduate degree.

Travel Without a Visa

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

The Visa Waiver Program  (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries *  to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

• consult with business associates
• attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
• attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)
• negotiate a contract

• vacation (holiday)
• visit with friends or relatives
• medical treatment
• participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
• participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
• enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted on Visa Waiver Program – Examples:

• study, for credit
• work as foreign press, radio, film, journalists, or other information media
• permanent residence in the United States

Must Be a Citizen or National of a VWP Designated Country *

You must be a citizen or national of the following countries *  to be eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP.

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• New Zealand
• South Korea
• Switzerland
• United Kingdom**

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website . 

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport. 

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa. 

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

• enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
• issuing e-passports;
• having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
• timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
• maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. See Extend Your Stay on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website .

Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.

$400m boost for the "NaVualiku" tourism program Share

The World Bank will be committing $400 million over the next decade to support economic growth in the Northern Division under the NaVualiku-Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu.

This has been revealed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka while launching the project last night at the Wasawasa Hotel in Savusavu.

He says that the NaVualiku program represents a pivotal moment in Fiji’s journey toward sustainable development and Vanua Levu as a tourism destination.

Based on the recent data, visitors’ arrivals remain strong, with nearly 100,000 visitors arriving in July and over 94,000 in August, which indicates that tourism continues to be a driving force in Fiji’s economy.

Rabuka says that the government is committed to transforming Vanua Levu into a thriving tourism hub, which includes infrastructure and other supporting activities that foster economic growth, create meaningful employment, and attract both local and international investment.

“The NaVualiku Program is part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to build a resilient and sustainable future, one that protects our natural heritage for generations to come. This program also recognizes that true progress is not just measured in economic numbers but by improving the quality of life for our people.”

While acknowledging the Ministry of Tourism for spearheading the initiative, PM Rabuka says it was time for Vanua Levu to elevate its economic activities, while in the past 18 to 20 months, over 10 companies have invested in projects in Vanua Levu.

However, PM Rabuka adds that the success of the NaVualiku Program depends on a collective commitment to its vision and will be a driving force in shaping the future of Fiji, lifting Vanua Levu to new heights and creating a legacy of growth, sustainability, and opportunity for all.

Kansas Tourism Awards BARN Grants to Boost Agritourism Development

TOPEKA – Kansas Tourism today announced $100,000 total has been awarded to the first recipients of the Barn Adaptation and Restoration Needs (BARN) grant program. The new grant will help drive economic growth in rural Kansas by preserving a vital part of the state’s architectural history through the revitalization of six iconic barns, which will be transformed into destination-based agritourism assets.

“The BARN grant is vital to our efforts to foster and support innovation and sustainability in our agricultural communities,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said . “These funds not only will help preserve the rich agricultural traditions of Kansas but also pave the way for new and creative agritourism ventures that will benefit local residents and visitors alike.”

Collectively, the six grant recipients will invest more than $200,000 in matching funds for barn restoration and enhancing rural tourism.

“We are excited to see these projects come to reality and contribute to the future of Kansas agritourism,” Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said . “By revitalizing these unique structures, we are not only preserving our past, but also creating new economic opportunities that will draw visitors to experience the heart and soul of Kansas.”

93 beautiful photos of Vietnam to be exhibited in the United States - Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism

(TITC) – Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will organize an exhibition of 93 artistic photos showcasing beauty of Vietnam by photographer Tran Tuan Viet during the Vietnam Tourism - Cinema Promotion Program in the United States from 23 to 25 September 2024.

“Whenever I have beautiful photos, I often share them on social media platforms. I have more than 1 million followers on the platforms, more than 90% of them are foreigners. They consider my photos as inspiration to come to Vietnam, learn more about the culture and landmarks of Vietnam" - photographer Tran Tuan Viet shared.

93 photos introduce very famous places that Hollywood filmmakers have known such as: Son Doong Cave, Phong Nha Ke Bang, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An... and potential places: Ha Giang, Binh Thuan, Da Lat...

The exhibition is expected to attract investors, filmmakers, and tourists from the US to Vietnam.

Between 21 September and 25 September, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will organize the Vietnam Tourism - Cinema Promotion Program in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, USA under the theme “Vietnam -  new destination of World Cinema”.

The purpose of event is to promote tourist destinations; potential filming locations; and attract Hollywood film studios to Vietnam.

History of Krasnoyarsk Krai

The first state in the territory of southern Siberia appeared in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Ancient Chinese chronicles called it Dinlin. Around 201 BC, Dinlin state was defeated by the Hunnu (the ancestors of the Huns) - an ancient Turkic nomadic people who inhabited the steppes to the north of China from 220 BC until the 2nd century AD. To protect the country against their raids Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall of China.

After the defeat of Dinlin, the Turkic tribe of the Kyrgyz settled in Khakass-Minusinsk depression. In 840, Kyrgyz state destroyed Uighur Khanate and extended its power in Tuva and Mongolia. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Kyrgyz were conquered by the Mongols.

Since that time, the Kyrgyz ceased to play an independent role in the Asian international politics. But in the Minusinsk Hollow, the surrounding area of Krasnoyarsk and other northern territories, the Kyrgyz were the most powerful force and resisted the Russian Cossacks who were engaged in the conquest of Siberia. In the end they could not prevent the incorporation of these territories into Russia.

More historical facts…

Until 1629, the territory of present Krasnoyarsk krai was part of a vast region with its center in the town of Tobolsk. In the 1760s-1780s, Siberia began to be used as the main place of exile. In 1822, Yenisei gubernia (province) was established after the separation of Siberia into Western and Eastern. In 1863, 44,994 exiles lived in the Yenisei province representing 1/7 of the total population of the province. According to the 1897 census, 570,200 people lived in the province.

On December 7, 1934, Krasnoyarsk Krai was formed. The borders of the region were almost the same as of Yenisei gubernia of the Russian Empire. In 1991, Khakassia Autonomous Oblast being originally part of the region became a separate subject of Russia - the Republic of Khakassia.

On January 1, 2007, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) Autonomous Okrug and Evenky Autonomous Okrug were united in a single region called Krasnoyarsk Krai, the autonomous okrugs became Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenetsky) and Evenky districts.

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Features

Krasnoyarsk Krai occupies 13.86% of the territory of Russia. It is the second largest region of the country after the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) that occupies 18% of the territory. It is located in the basin of the Yenisei River. In the north, the region is washed by two seas of the Arctic Ocean - the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea.

The length of Krasnoyarsk Krai from the north to the mountains of Southern Siberia is about 3,000 km. Cape Chelyuskin, located on the territory of the region, is the extreme northern point of the mainland of Russia and Asia.

On the coat of arms of Krasnoyarsk Krai you can see a lion with a sickle and spade reflecting the main occupation of the locals in the past - agriculture and mining (gold in the first place).

The climate varies from sharply continental to temperate continental. It is characterized by strong temperature fluctuations during the year.

On the territory of the region there are three climatic zones: arctic, sub-arctic and temperate. Winters are long, summers are short. The average temperature in January is minus 36 degrees Celsius in the north and minus 18 degrees Celsius in the south, in July - plus 13-20 degrees Celsius respectively.

The main rivers are the Yenisei, Angara, Nizhnyaya Tunguska, Khatanga, Pyasina, Podkamennaya Tunguska. The Yenisei, flowing from south to north, is one of the largest rivers in the world.

There are about 323,000 lakes that are more than 300 meters in length. About 85% of them are located in the Arctic Circle. Lake Taimyr is the largest lakes in the region (4,560 sq. km.). Other major lakes: Bolshoye Khantayskoye, Pyasino, Keta, Lama.

The largest cities of Krasnoyarsk Krai are Krasnoyarsk (1,103,000), Norilsk (184,100) Achinsk (104,300), Kansk (87,600), Zheleznogorsk (80,300), Minusinsk (66,200), Zelenogorsk (61,100), Lesosibirsk (58,400), Nazarovo (48,900).

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Natural Resources

This region has more than 95% of Russian reserves of nickel and platinum group metals, more than 20% of gold, significant reserves of cobalt, nepheline ore, magnesite, Iceland spar, fine quartz sand, refractory clay, graphite, 63 industrial metals, and other minerals, as well as about 70% of Russian coal, which makes 20% of the world’s coal.

Intensive coal mining is conducted in Kansko-Achinsky basin, Tungussky basin. More than two dozen oil and gas fields have been found. Gorevskoye deposit of lead (42% of all Russian lead), one of the largest deposits in the world, is located here. About 21% of apatite raw in Russia is located in Maymecha-Kotuyskaya apatite area.

In 2009, industrial exploitation of Vankor oil and gas field began. Oil reserves in the field exceed 260 million tons, natural gas - about 90 billion cubic meters.

The area of the forest fund of the Krasnoyarsk region is 168 million hectares. Forests cover 71% of the territory. The total timber reserves are estimated at 14.4 billion cubic meters, 18% of Russian reserves of timber.

Such animals as sable, squirrel, arctic fox, fox, ermine, and reindeer are found in large numbers. The population of wild reindeer is estimated at 600 thousand heads.

Krasnoyarsk Krai - Economy

Due to significant reserves of mineral resources, power resources and heavy industry, the Krasnoyarsk region plays an important role in the Russian economy.

Significant power resources helped to create such large plants as Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Plant, Krasnoyarsk Metallurgical Plant, Achinsk Aluminum Plant. The regional plants produce about 27% of Russian aluminum. Norilsk Nickel, the Russian mining and metallurgical company, produces over 70% of Russian copper, 80% of nickel, 70% of cobalt, and over 90% of platinum group metals.

Krasnoyarsk Krai possesses the largest in Russia potential for hydropower development. Sayano-Shushenskaya, Krasnoyarsk, Boguchany hydroelectric power plants are among the largest in the world.

Machine-building plants in the region produce civil and military goods. Woodworking, pulp and paper industries are also developed as well as chemical industry.

The climate of Minusinsk Hollow is considered the best in Siberia - vegetables and fruits of the best quality are grown here. Over 50% of agricultural output is produced in the central and southwestern parts of the province.

Krasnoyarsk Krai is a large transport hub of Siberia. The railways include the Trans-Siberian Railway with its branches, South Siberian Railway, Norilsk Railway.

The largest highways are M53 Baikal (Novosibirsk - Irkutsk) and M54 Yenisei (Krasnoyarsk - Kyzyl - Mongolia). Yemelyanovo International Airport located near Krasnoyarsk is the largest international airport of the region.

Attractions of Krasnoyarsk Krai

In the Krasnoyarsk region there are more than 4,500 historical and cultural monuments, objects of archaeological heritage. Shalobolinskaya rock paintings, Paleolithic sites on Afontova mountain in Krasnoyarsk, mounds in Minusinsk Hollow, remnants of fortifications are evidence of the life of ancient people on the territory of the region.

The town of Yeniseysk is a unique monument of town-planning art of the 18th - early 20th centuries. In 2019, Yeniseysk will celebrate the 400th anniversary. The town is included in the preliminary list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Architectural monuments are also concentrated in Krasnoyarsk, Achinsk, Kansk, Minusinsk, Shushenskoye, the villages of Taseevo and Ermakovskoye.

Krasnoyarsk Krai has several unique museum complexes: “Shushenskoye” - a historical and ethnographic museum-reserve, which retains part of an old Siberian village; Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and the Far East; Minusinsk Museum named after Martyanov - the oldest museum in Siberia; Museum of Permafrost in Igarka - the only museum in the world with a unique dungeon deep in the permafrost soil.

The region is rich in recreational resources that allow to develop almost all types of tourism: safaris on reindeer and dog sledding, ecotourism, horse riding, cross-country skiing and hiking, spa treatment. The most famous spa complexes are “Sosnoviy Bor” on Lake Tagarskoye, “Shushenskiy” on the shore of the mountain river Oja, “Lake Uchum”, “Krasnoyarsk Zagoriye” in the foothills of the Western Sayan.

Krasnoyarsk Krai also offers great opportunities for hunting and fishing, cultural, educational and pilgrimage tourism, business and event tourism (All-Russian festival of national culture “Siberian maslenitsa”, Kansk Video Festival, the festival “Yenisei ukha (fish soup)”, Yenisei August Fair, Day of the Minusinsk tomato, National Festival “Vysotsky and Siberia “, the International festival of ethnic music and crafts” MIR Siberia “).

• State Nature Biosphere Reserve “Sayano-Shushenskiy” located in the south of the region on the left bank of the Yenisei River, in the area of influence of the Sayano-Shushenskoye reservoir,
• Putoransky State Nature Reserve located within the plateau Putoran, in the north-western part of the Central Siberian Plateau, to the south of the Taimyr Peninsula,
• Stolby Nature Reserve, from the north-east this reserve borders on Krasnoyarsk,
• Taimyr Reserve - one of the largest reserves in Russia located in the north of Krasnoyarsk krai, on the Taimyr Peninsula,
• Tunguska Reserve located in the central part of the Central Siberian Plateau in the territory of Evenk district,
• Central Siberian Reserve located on the western edge of the central part of the Central Siberian Plateau, in the valley of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River,

Cowater is seeking to recruit a Technical Consultant / Consultancy specialised in vocational training and management to partner with Lao Cai College in building the College’s capacity to develop, text and manage innovative and market-facing tourism and hospitality training offers targeting ethnic minority women working in the tourism and hospitality sector. Objective 1 – have improved economic benefits.

Objective 2 – have increased confidence and social status, including more balanced workloads and greater decision-making within the home, workplace and community.         

Objective 3 – benefit from more gender-responsive, inclusive, and effective provincial and national policies, plans, strategies, and programs.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for the right vocational training support Service Provider to strengthen the quality and sustainability of vocational training services targeting ethnic minority women in Lao Cai wishing to engage in the tourism and hospitality sector. This is a sector that is growing rapidly and offers many and diverse opportunities for ethnic communities and women in particular, yet those opportunities remain inaccessible to many due to persistent and significant skills gaps. 

Lao Cai College represents a key service provider in this space and brings many decades of experience in supporting the sector. In meeting the growing skills gap challenge in the sector, Lao Cao College is partnering with GREAT 2 to support and strengthen a number of key areas, including:

Strengthening understanding of skills gaps and the scope and diversity of skills needs in the tourism and hospitality sectors, including the needs of industry stakeholders and ethnic minority women employees and entrepreneurs;

Building partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure the continued relevance and quality of training services targeting ethnic minority women;

Building the capacity of training staff to develop and deliver high quality training, including improving training standards to based on ASEAN standard requirements;

Supporting the strengthening of College promotional and marketing strategy and capabilities to better target ethnic minority communities and women in particular; and

Supporting College management to review and develop effective training delivery and financing models based on good practice to meet increased emphasis on independent funding streams.

The GREAT program is seeking a  Technical Consultant / Consultancy specialised in vocational training and management to support this critical work with Lao Cai College aimed at strengthening the relevance, quality and outreach of its training services. In particular, the Consultant / Consultancy will provide expert technical assistance, mentoring and advisory services in the following three areas:

• Support to training market research; tourism product and training service development 
• Support to training standards and technical staff capacity building
• Design support and mentoring to skills gap research and analysis amongst ethnic minority women

TASK AREA 1. Support to training market research; tourism product and training service development 

Working closely with the Lao Cai College team to develop an effective and replicable approach and methodology for training market demand and trend analysis, and strengthened capacity and procedures for developing and updating high quality, accessible training products and materials targeting ethnic minority women employees and entrepreneurs in the tourism and hospitality sector. 

Envisaged scope of project activities:

• Support and guidance to development of practical mechanisms for ongoing industry linkages, skills monitoring and referencing
• Coaching and technical assistance to the identification of addressable skills training content, material and delivery platforms targeting ethnic minority women students/clients
• Support to the development of effective outreach and promotional strategies, campaigns and material targeting ethnic minority women students/clients
• Guidance and mentoring for College staff in piloting, reviewing and refining new/adapted training products targeting ethnic minority women students/clients

TASK AREA 2. Support to training standards and technical staff capacity building

Working closely with the Lao Cai College team, identify key skills areas of relevance to ethnic minority women clients/students in which to develop College training staff capacities at ASEAN standards to ensure the consistency, high quality and relevance of College training services in the hospitality and tourism sector. 

• Capacity needs assessment of College tourism and hospitality team with reference to emerging priority skills gaps and training opportunities for ethnic minority women students/clients
• Design and development of a programme of capacity building for both technical and management staff to address identified capacity gaps in training design, delivery, quality and management
• Delivery of professional training for College technical staff in accordance with ASEAN standards in selected, high demand skills areas
• Mentoring to College staff on effective monitoring and measurement of training efficacy and learning outcomes, and training adaptation

TASK AREA 3. Support to training business model development and delivery regarding vocational tourism training 

Working closely with the Lao Cai College managers, assess the scope for developing and introducing innovation in training and course delivery and financing based on the principles of international good management practices in the vocational training field and in line with College ambition to strengthen its sources of independent and sustainable income streams. 

• Review and synthesis of relevant, prevailing vocational training business models in light of shifting priorities toward diversification and sustainability of institutional income streams
• Review of prevailing Lao Cai College service delivery mechanisms, business models, costings and cost management
• Support to development of actionable and sustainable training delivery models and financing structures (cost recovery, blended financing) associated with new/adapted training offers targeting ethnic minority women students/clients
• Mentoring and coaching for College managers in management and administration of cost-recovery and/or blended financing training models

Expected results

• Identification and selection of a set of priority hospitality and/or tourism skills needs amongst ethnic minority women employees and entrepreneurs
• Establishment of a working mechanisms for ongoing industry consultation and demand trend monitoring
• Design, development, promotion and piloting of a set of new/adapted training products targeting ethnic minority women students/clients
• Enhanced capacity of Lao Cai College staff to provide and monitor learning outcomes of high quality, relevant training for ethnic minority women students/clients and to teach at or beyond ASEAN standard levels where relevant
• Introduction and effective management of innovative and sustainable training service delivery model(s) that enhance the effectiveness and commercial sustainability of College training services

The project is expected to commence in December 2024 and be completed by the end of March 2027.

Those interested parties wishing to present an Offer for these services should develop and submit a brief Proposal as follows: 

• Cover Letter

The Proposal cover letter summarise the Offerers relevant experience and capabilities in providing the services described above, and be signed by an authorised representative.

• Consultant / Consultancy information (3 pages)

The Proposal must be written in either English or Vietnamese and be a maximum of 11 pages (+ Annexes) to include the following:

• Provide the name, address and Consultant/Consultancy contact
• Knowledge and understanding of vocational training sector, with specific reference to the tourism and hospitality skills sector
• Proven experience and credentials in providing technical assistance and capacity building support/services to vocational training service providers / institutions
• Experience and credentials in providing training to ASEAN vocational training standards level
• Experience in a diverse array of vocational training services, formats and approaches including ones targeting rural / remote communities such as ethnic minority women in northwest Vietnam
• Knowledge and experience of managing Technical Assistance projects and of delivering high quality services and outputs to agreed standards and timelines
• Experience working with public vocational training institutions in Vietnam 
• Technical approach (6 pages)

Brief outline of how the Consultant / Consultancy would approach each of the three key Task Areas outlined above, paying particular attention to how you would approach embedding sustained capacity and capabilities within Lao Cai College in the given timeframe:

• Approach to skills gap research, analysis and capacity building
• Approach to establishing workable and relevant industry linkages 
• Approach to product, pedagogy and delivery platform identification and prioritisation

Kansas Tourism Awards BARN Grants to Boost Agritourism Development

Kansas Tourism has announced $100,000 total has been awarded to the first recipients of the Barn Adaptation and Restoration Needs (BARN) grant program.

The new grant will help drive economic growth in rural Kansas by preserving a vital part of the state's architectural history through the revitalization of six iconic barns, which will be transformed into destination-based agritourism assets.

"The BARN grant is vital to our efforts to foster and support innovation and sustainability in our agricultural communities," Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. "These funds not only will help preserve the rich agricultural traditions of Kansas but also pave the way for new and creative agritourism ventures that will benefit local residents and visitors alike."

Collectively, the six grant recipients will invest more than $200,000 in matching funds for barn restoration and enhancing rural tourism.

"We are excited to see these projects come to reality and contribute to the future of Kansas agritourism," Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said. "By revitalizing these unique structures, we are not only preserving our past, but also creating new economic opportunities that will draw visitors to experience the heart and soul of Kansas."

The 2024 BARN grant recipients include Cattle Cartel Merchandise of Russell County for $22,000 and Scorched Stone Farm of Barton County for $25,000.

Travel Tourism Company Pays More Than $2 Million To Resolve Civil Claims Regarding Funds Obtained Under The Paycheck Protection Program

Tampa, FL – United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announces that Miles Partnership, LLC (Miles), a travel and tourism consulting company headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, has agreed to a civil settlement of $2,281,950 to resolve allegations that Miles improperly obtained and received forgiveness of a loan under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Congress created the PPP in March 2020 as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide emergency loans to small businesses suffering economic hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act authorized these businesses to seek forgiveness of the loans if they spent the loan funds on eligible expenses. When applying for PPP loans, borrowers were required to certify the truthfulness and accuracy of all information provided in their loan applications. The PPP was administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Under the PPP rules and regulations then in effect, companies that were required to file a registration statement under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) were not eligible for a PPP loan. 

GNGH2, Inc. filed a qui tam complaint in the Middle District of Florida alleging that Miles improperly obtained a second draw PPP loan for $2 million. According to the allegations in the complaint, Miles was required to file a registration statement under FARA due to its work with various foreign tourism boards. The United States investigated GNGH2’s allegations with the cooperation of Miles. The civil settlement will conclude the lawsuit filed by GNGH2 and GNGH2 will receive $207,450 as a share in the recovery.

“The United States Attorney’s Office is committed to investigating and holding responsible those applicants who improperly obtained loans under the PPP program,” said U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg for the Middle District of Florida. “We will continue to seek civil redress and, where appropriate, criminally prosecute those individuals and entities that obtained PPP loans to which they were not entitled.”

SBA’s General Counsel Therese Meers stated, “The favorable settlement in this case is the product of enhanced efforts by federal agencies such as the Small Business Administration working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, other federal law enforcement agencies, as well as private individuals who uncover borrower misconduct to recover the lending program’s damages as well as penalties.”

The investigation was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Emden, with assistance from the Small Business Administration - Office of General Counsel. 

On May 17, 2021, the Attorney General established the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force to marshal the resources of the Department of Justice in partnership with agencies across government to enhance efforts to combat and prevent pandemic-related fraud. The task force bolsters efforts to investigate and prosecute the most culpable domestic and international criminal actors and assists agencies tasked with administering relief programs to prevent fraud by, among other methods, augmenting and incorporating existing coordination mechanisms, identifying resources and techniques to uncover fraudulent actors and their schemes, and sharing and harnessing information and insights gained from prior enforcement efforts.
