Simple Minds Add a Handful of Headline Shows to 2024 Australian Tour

Simple Minds will be in Australia in February 2024, co-headlining the Red Hot Summer Tour alongside their old friends Icehouse . The Scottish new wave act has announced a bunch of solo headline shows at theatre and arena venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast. Find all the details below.

Simple Minds and Icehouse will be joined by Noiseworks , Daryl Braithwaite and Bachelor Girl for the Red Hot Summer Tour dates in Mornington, Yarra Valley and Bribie Island. Bachelor Girl will be the lone support act on the tour’s final show at Perth’s Kings Park & Botanic Garden.

Simple Minds – ‘Love Song’

Simple Minds are best remembered for their 1985 mega-hit ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’. Boy & Bear covered the song for triple j’s Like A Version in 2021 . The cover landed at #92 in the station’s inaugural Hottest 100 of Like A Version earlier this year.

Simple Minds’ catalogue is not defined by that one song, mind you. The band formed in Glasgow in the late 1970s and released their debut album, Life in a Day, in 1979. Their early work corresponded to the prevailing post-punk movement.

The band didn’t achieve mainstream commercial success until the release of their fifth album, 1982’s New Gold Dream . Simple Minds have released a total of 19 studio albums, the latest of which, Direction of the Heart , came out in 2022.

Simple Minds announce Global Tour 2024 Australian dates

Scottish rock band Simple Minds have announced a string of shows across Australia as part of their Global Tour in 2024.

They follow their appearances as part of the Red Hot Summer Tour, where the band will play at Mornington, Rochford Winery, Sandstone and Kings Park.

Among the stops for their standalone tour will be Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

The band hit the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1985 with Don't You (Forget About Me) - made famous through its appearance on The Breakfast Club's soundtrack.

Other hits in their catalogue include Promised You a Miracle , Glittering Prize , Someone Somewhere in Summertime , Waterfront , Alive and Kicking and Sanctify Yourself.

Formed in the 1970s and named after a lyric - 'so simple minded' - from David Bowie's seminal 1972 single The Jean Genie , Simple Minds has become one of the most successful bands ever to come from the UK.

Having sold over 60 million albums and had number one hits the world over, not only has Simple Minds become a must-see live act, they have rekindled the magic that made them a vital artistic force in their early days and referenced by a slew of younger artists.

Their most recent and critically acclaimed album Direction of the Heart reached number 4 in the UK album chart and top 10 in multiple territories. Reviewing the album, Mojo described the band's energy as 'undiminished' whilst other critics praised the band's endurance and consistent creativity.

In the past decade alone, Simple Minds has played to hundreds of thousands of people around the globe, including their largest US tour to date in 2018.

After the Australian shows, the band will undertake a 24-date tour of the UK and Europe. Across the whole tour , Simple Minds expects to play to more than one million people worldwide.

Simple Minds are Jim Kerr (vocals), Charlie Burchill (guitars, keyboards), Gordy Goudie (acoustic guitar), Ged Grimes (bass), Cherisse Osei (drums), and Sarah Brown (vocals).

Lead singer Jim Kerr said concerts are the band's lifeblood.

"It's where we and our audience come alive and are energised through music. Four decades on from when we first set out, this global tour will demonstrate that Simple Minds are still alive and kicking," he said.

REVIEW: Simple Minds 2024 Global Tour – Australia

Simple Minds are one of the UK’s most successful bands, having achieved six No.1 albums in the UK as well hitting the top spot in countless other territories including Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is that people say to me what Simple Minds are you talking about? The avant-garde, the art-rock, the pop, the ambient, the instrumental group, the political, the folk, the stadium band? We’ve been on one hell of a journey. To play all those different styles but at the same time be quintessentially Simple Minds is an amazing thing.”  Jim Kerr.

Simple Minds have been musical pioneers for 40 glittering years. Catching the mood of the post-punk era, when the angry sounds of 1977 were splintering into a thousand different shapes, they emerged with a style rooted in the art-rock of David Bowie and the electronic dance of Donna Summer. They went on to become one of the great bands of their generation, deploying rousing choruses and booming atmospherics to provide a soundtrack that has endured.

They topped the American chart with  Don’t You (Forget About Me)  and followed suit in the UK with the  Ballad Of The Streets EP (featuring Belfast Child) . In selling over  60 million records , they have seen three of their 20 studio albums reach  number one in the UK  –  Sparkle In The Rain ,  Once Upon A Time  and  Street Fighting Years  – a chart-topping feat equalled by their live album  Live In The City Of Light  and the compilation  Glittering Prize . A spellbinding touring band, they have graced the world’s biggest stadiums. They starred at Live Aid and played three momentous London shows in honour of  Nelson Mandela .

After a notable absence from live performances for us in Adelaide (8 years), Simple Minds took the stage with vigor, showcasing the extensive rehearsal they had put in over the weeks prior. Part rock, part pop and 100% sensational, their set included a mix of beloved, bangin’ classics and newer pieces, demonstrating the band’s enduring talent and stage presence. Jim Kerr, the lead vocalist, is particularly noted for his agility and energy, he engaged deeply with the audience throughout their 90-minute set with a bit of relevant banter and plenty of rock and stage work. The band’s ability to deliver a powerful rendition of hits like ‘Belfast Child’ and ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ left a lasting impression, concluding with HUGE encore of ‘Alive And Kicking’ and ‘Sanctify Yourself’ that resonated well with the crowd​ ​.

Opening with the 80’s crowd pleaser, ‘Waterfront’, they band set the bar high. They never dropped below it. EVER. The lighting was magnificent and the acoustics were insane. I can only assume of course, but, I’m pretty sure there would have been no disappointed punter in the crowd. While introducing who they were as a band, he teasingly mentioned ‘For those who were gagged, blinded-folded and dragged here and have no idea’, with tongue firmly in-cheek, he assured those folk, ‘It could be worse, we could be Duran Duran, or Spandau Ballet, or even A Flock Of Seagulls’. We were rapturous and the show went on…

This performance adds to Simple Minds’ reputation as a consistently above-average live act, as affirmed by a compilation of a plethora of respected critic concert reviews. Their live shows are described as grandiose, energetic, powerful, and poignant, reflecting the band’s ability to captivate audiences with their music and performance style. This broad critical acclaim underscores the band’s status as a must-see live act for fans and newcomers alike​ ​. We got it all, and in abundance.

Charlie Burchill (an original member), Ged Grimes , Sarah Brown, Gordy Goudie, Cherisse Osei as the band were in the finest form as Jim Kerr led the tight group through a well developed catalogue of 80’s and onwards great musical treats. Each of the member had their solo moments and they shone vividly showcasing the individual talents they posses.

For anyone considering catching Simple Minds on their global tour, I can only suggest that audiences are in for a treat. Their performance at Adelaide Entertainment Centre was a testament to their status as seasoned performers who continue to deliver engaging and memorable live music experiences. If you’ve missed their visit to your town, they promised THEY WILL BE BACK, VERY SOON! And I for one, cannot wait, I don’t think I’m alone however…

  BAND ANNOUNCE ADDITIONAL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS AS PART OF THEIR BIGGEST TOUR SINCE 1985

Following the announcement of four shows as part of the  Red Hot Summer Tour , today  Simple Minds  announce five more Australian shows for next February as part of their  Global Tour 2024.

Thereafter,  Simple Minds  will undertake a 24-date tour of the UK and Europe. Across the whole  Global Tour 2024  Simple Minds  expect to play to over one million people worldwide.

Simple Minds Are Alive and Kicking Again In Australia

Simple Minds will kick off their Australian dates for Red Hot Summer on Thursday with two shows on Thursday at the Sydney Opera House and then the double header with Icehouse on Saturday and Sunday in Victoria.

Simple Minds last toured Australia in 2017 but first toured Australia opening for Icehouse in 1981. For the Red Hot Summer shows, the two bands will share top billing, alternating as closing act from night to night.

This weekend, Icehouse will close the Mornington Red Hot Summer show and Simple Minds will close Sunday night at Rochford Winery.

On January 27, Simple Minds performed in New Zealand.
