Amazing shop

Vintage Voyage is just a lovely example of vintage shop, such a treasure you expect to find in Paris or NY, and it was such a pleasant surprise to discover it in Moscow. Great choice of clothing, bags and jewellery and a paradise for Chanel and Hermes fans.

If you are a discerning shopper with a budget to spend, this is the place for you. The shop offers a wide collection of vintage items from Chanel, Hermès, Yves Saint Laurent, Nina Ricci, Gucci, Roberta di Camerino, Givenchy, Emilio Pucci and others, as well as those from stars of the past, such as Paloma Picasso, Galanos and Arnold Scaasi. All of it is conveniently located right in the centre of Moscow, which should suit not only fashion conscious Muscovites, but a wide international clientele as well.

When it comes to luxury vintage shopping in Moscow - there's no other place like Vintage Voyage. Alina - the boutique owner - has an exquisite taste and carefully selects unique vintage pieces for her beautiful collection. Despite its petite size the showroom displays an impressive collection of authentic Hermes, Chanel, LV, YSL and Gucci bags as well as rails of Coco Chanel handcrafted jackets, one-of-a-kind fur coats, couture designer dresses and an amazing treasury of vintage jewels. The name of the spot speaks for itself - Vintage Voyage turns out to be a real adventure even for spoiled and experienced shopaholics -- the VV team goes far beyond routine retail: they arrange friends & family lectures on fashion and art, frequently make mind-blowing Instagram giveaways and ease their customers' lives with a user-friendly online-store that provides worldwide shipping. Also make sure you follow Vintage Voyage on Facebook -- their retro posters and historical shots will make your day :)

How to Shop Vintage in NYC: Behind-the-Scenes of My Special Tours!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

Hello and happy THURSDAY TOURS DAY vintage lovers!!!

While a little bit late in the announcement, I hereby declare the last three Thursdays as “Tour Thursdays” because those were the official dates of my first vintage store tours for the Sammy Davis Vintage Shopping Experience!

Today is the last of the “introductory tours” before the full scale tours are unveiled to the public very, very soon. A separate site is in the works to share information for tour attendees and deets on how & when to purchase tickets!

I’m so excited to continue growing a new line of the Sammy Davis Vintage business which continues to bring vintage lovers old and new together in spreading vintage love!

In honor of the “end” of these intro rate tours and the “beginning” of a new chapter for the tours themselves, I wanted to share all the fun I’ve had with a few of the lovely ladies who took the tour these past two weeks so that I could “perfect” my tour giving magic and receive the feedback to truly make this experience shine for future vintage lovers.

HUGE thanks to Lucille, Anna & Lauren for posing oh-so-many-times for the pictures you’re about to see of us taken on the tours. Thank goodness for my iPhone … I just get so snap happy!

Keep reading after the jump for a behind-the-scenes look at what we saw and styled in the vintage stores we visited …. and of course, what vintage pieces were given HAPPY HOMES!

Lately I’ve been listening to one of my favorite motivational speakers, Dr. Wayne Dyer. One of his book series “Inspiration” was converted into CD format, which I put on my iPod for reflection when coming to and from places traveling by foot or on the subway.

He speaks to how, when we are most happy, we are living an “inspired life.” In musing on what it means to live an inspired life — and just what inspires ME — I’ve come to a strong [and growing more muscles!] conclusion that what inspires me most is seeing women & men find vintage that they love and will love wearing.

These tours offer me the chance to truly live that inspired life. Not that I’m not inspired all ready — but imagine winning the lottery of inspiration. These tours are the JACKPOT! So I truly must say thank you to all who have shown support for the creation of this new business and confidence that it will succeed.

With so many vintage lovers to meet and greet … I can’t see how we can’t succeed at shopping vintage style TOGETHER!

Thank you all and happy TOUR THURSDAY!

MEET LAUREN!

THE VINTAGE LOVER: Miss Lauren, a fashion lover through & through who has been thrifting in New Jersey since she was a teenager!

HOW WE’RE CONNECTED: I met Lauren through mutual friend Sharon, who I know through my former career working in the magazine industry. Sharon put us in touch so that Lauren could join in on the vintage shopping experience and see what I was all about for herself!

HER STYLE: Lauren and I had the pleasure of sharing a very personal shopping experience together, because Lauren was interested in writing about my tours for the site she is fashion editor of, Ology.com .

So to clothe Lauren in three unique vintage looks to wear during Fashion Week with $150 in our pockets, I went straight to her Facebook profile just to see what Lauren’s style “was.” This is a strategy I love to use when first getting to know someone before actually hitting the stores and styling them. I’m a proponent of dressing in vintage that suits YOU and not ME, therefore to do my job at its best I must understand the wardrobe tendencies of those who I’m styling.

Lauren is marvelously monochromatic and a lover of knits, silks and soft cotton, skinny jeans and um … SHOES! The girl knows her body and she knows how to create the beauty she loves. So when shopping for Lauren, I pulled beautiful creams, greys, blacks first, but pushed her to “experiment” with a few other pieces just to see how they felt on.

Some were losers … but some were winners! And the best part is, by the end of our personal vintage shopping spree, Lauren said that I had “inspired her” to look at things she normally wouldn’t wear with confidence that she could.

HER SITE: Ology.com — be sure to check out the fashion/beauty section , of which Lauren is the editor! When touring together, she was name dropping designers, trends and fashion news like she was Google.com herself. She’s an inspiration!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

1 / Lauren trying on the hot vintage shade style of the moment: Elton John / John Lennon glasses!

2 – 3 / One look of three we styled for Lauren’s Fashion Week coverage debut. Scalloped shorts and white/striped top with faded rose design were secondhand, black blazer from Urban and platform shoes her own! She was smiling wide because she felt so comfy and herself in these pieces combined.

Here we’re at Beacon’s Closet in the East Village — which in my opinion, is the best location in the city!

4 – 5 – 6 / We hit the classic vintage jackpot … of cross body leather bags! Can you guess which one is vintage Coach?

7 / At Tokyo7, a more upscale [but still seriously affordable] secondhand store in the East Village. When Lauren saw these pants [which we bought new with the tags on, BTW!] she screamed: SIENNA! As in, the color of the pants!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

THE VINTAGE LOVER: Awesome ANNA! While she works in the city proper [and just got a new job, to boot!] she technically lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, an adorable town off the Metro North. So she was an “out of towner” tour attendee.

HOW WE’RE CONNECTED: I first met Anna at a reunion event for American Society of Magazine Editors, an organization who recruited me as an intern in magazine publishing the summer of 2006 [woah, dating myself here!]. I attended this reunion event a few months ago and met Anna, who was an “ASME” intern last year. Our shared bonds of magazines, thrifting and big smiles brought us together!

HER STYLE: Anna has the body of a mannequin — and I mean this in a complimentary way! — so she can pretty much wear anything she feels. But that’s not how she dresses: She definitely picks and chooses appropriately. Since Anna just got a new job in the publishing world, she wanted to invest in a few vintage pieces appropriate for work. Keep scrolling to see the awesome Missoni dress we scored … that if I owned, I’d wear EVERY day to work!

HER SITE: Anna also checked out my tour so that she could profile me for a freelance article for the site Life2PointOh , which is all about “conquering the quarter-life.” Considering I’m right smack dab a “quarter lifer” at 25 years old, that sounds like me for sure!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

1 / We loved this purple/blue floral working-girl dress! It wasn’t the highest quality of fabric for the modern day office, however, but would have done anyone’s style justice for a casual, cool day.

2 / The MISSONI sweater dress! Please “like” this article if you find that dress as fab as I do ;-)

3 / A Mexican sundress. A bit too much on the ruffles and lace, we agreed, but on a younger version of Anna? Potentially perfectly adorable!

4 / This graphic plaid print is right on trend, but we didn’t like the oversize collar. After sending the pic to Facebook to ask what everyone thought, we realized that this dress could have been purchased and reconstructed to fit with Anna’s style. But we sadly let it go! Thanks to all vintage lovers on the page for sharing their thoughts!

5 / It may look like leopard print … but it’s actually GIRAFFE! What a gorgeous coat for fall. Anna is a tall girl like me — actually, she’s a whole inch and 1/4 taller, standing high at 5′ 10″! So the jacket’s sleeves were slightly too short!

MEET LUCILLE!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

THE VINTAGE LOVER: Lucille is a gorgeous gal from upstate New York who has been a vintage lover HER whole life, too! She confessed that while she loves buying pieces from the past, she just can’t convince her friends to take the same interest as she. So it was refreshing for her to shop vintage with someone who understood the passion and could chime in on the excitement of the hunt!

HOW WE’RE CONNECTED: Lucille first learned about me through the crazy world of YouTube. She started watching YouTube makeup/hair tutorial vids, and somehow stumbled onto my web series and connected on Facebook! How’s that for a small world?!

HER STYLE: When Lucille answered her pre-tour survey, she wrote that she was attending the tour with two style missions: One, to find a few new pieces for her Etsy store. Second, to find pieces of high-quality, classic vintage pieces for her own wardrobe. Lucille is pretty and polished — she looks great in the perfect dress and heels, a crisp blazer, a snazzy pencil or pleated midi skirt. So we shopped vintage with an edited eye and as you’ll see below, found quite a few pieces that made her style-happy!

HER SITE: Check out Lucille’s Etsy shop, Galipette Vintage. She’s even listed one of the items she found while on the tour … these amazing pants!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

1 / Lucille at the register … cashing out with vintage purchase success!

2 / A sampling of what she found to list in her Etsy shop … do I see granny plaid?!

3 / For Lucille’s anniversary dinner with her husband, we were torn between two vintage dresses that were curated from Europe … [yes! European Vintage!] including this blue-darling and …

4 / …. this pink rose dress with slight flutter sleeves and a pleated skirt from the early ’80s. Which one do you think she ultimately bought? If you have a guess, leave a comment!

5 / Remember the leopard print but-oh-wait-its-giraffe-print fur coat Anna tried on further above? Well here it is on Lucille!

6 / And finally, a classic piece of vintage jewelry that while muted shades of pink and gold, was so attention-grabbing on: an oversize cameo ring.

VINTAGE FUN & LAUGHTER = SPREADING THE LOVE!

The Fur Debate: How to be Sustainable & Recycle Vintage Fur for Good Causes

Anna & I [left] and Lauren & I!

Unfortunately, Lucille and I spent too much time talking & shopping to remember to take a picture together! So vintage lovers, if you ever take a tour … please remember to ask me to take our photo! ;-)

I love the black vintage dress and the white dress. They are both very beautiful. Especially the black one is very elegant. Audrey Hepburn’s style is always my favourite style.

I can’t wait to book my tickets to come on one of your tours! I will be looking out for when you launch the site.

AWESOME!! Wish I was close so I could go!

This is so great! I love your site and can’t wait to go to some of these places. If you are looking for more great vintage NYC Shopping , then you should check out citymaps. It is the best shopping map of NYC I have ever found!

I was a lucky participant of yesterday’s vintage tour and truly had a BLAST!! It was a unique behind the scenes personalized experience filled with advice, fun facts and trivia and most of all, encouragement to take some fashion risks. Sammy is one of the most upbeat and knowledgeable women I know and definitely gave honest opinions about what looks best for each body type and shape. We had the pleasure of visiting shops most people would walk right past, never knowing their interesting history and all the treasures that wait inside. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone interested in fashion looking to uncover the jewels of the New York vintage world.

What Are Antique Tours, Exactly?

Hollys Profile Pic

Globe-trotting for antiques sounds like an ideal way to spend time and money. Antique tours provide assistance with shopping trips. But tours are not one size fits all. Different companies offer varying levels of services and expertise. Some offer group excursions through historic districts, with stops at flea markets and shops. These tours are better suited to collectors who want to join like-minded enthusiasts for pleasure hunting. For people who mean business, though, customized, one-on-one tours may be the best route to take.

To determine if a specialty shopping service is for you, enjoy our guide to “What are antique tours?”

Types of antique tours

In general, antique tours fall into one of three categories. Some tours provide basic (1) pick up-drop off services . If you’re simply looking for transportation, this is an option to consider. If you prefer more of an experience, some travel companies offer antiquing travel packages that include hotel and meal arrangements. Similar to wine and cultural tours, businesses like Treasures of Europe arrange (2) antique shopping itineraries for groups . There are also (3) custom antique tours , such as The Antiques Diva , that tailor buying trips to meet individual requests.

Who takes antique tours?

Deciding To Take An Antique Tour

Any vintage enthusiast can book an antique tour. Typically, though, professionals may get the most out of customized tours. Antique retailers are certainly among those who book. But interior designers for hotels, restaurants, and private homes schedule guided shopping trips too. “We have clients who are looking to buy one object, but the majority of our clients are dealers or designers who are looking to buy a container worth of antiques,” says Toma Clark Haines, owner of The Antiques Diva.

The pros often fly solo . “If a group books a tour together we will fulfill it, but serious buyers shop alone,” Haines says. “If you’re stocking your store you need time to concentrate on sourcing antiques to make the best decisions for your business.”

Finding experienced guides

Qualified guides have access to antique nooks and crannies . “First and foremost – Diva guides need to have a slew of their own contacts in the antiques trade,” Haines says. “Secondly, most of the guides have training either in a Masters of Fine Arts, Sotheby’s or Christie’s training programs, or a background in interior design.”

Knowledgeable guides can be an asset. “My guide really zeroed in on the dealers she knew would have the items on my list,” says Susan Shaw, owner of W Road Collection and Antiques Diva client. Plus, they make introductions to a competitive antique industry that can keep sources for merchandise a secret . “Unless you’re known, you will not have access to some of the best deals and the best quality,” Shaw says.

How customized service works

Discuss goals up front. Special attention includes creating a personal itinerary – and antique wish-list – before your arrival. For example, share Pinterest boards and magazine images to convey your shopping vision. “I get to see into their minds through pictures and conversation,” says Antiques Diva Haines. “And then I see how I can make a difference in their store.” Clients can also decide how many days and locations to cover. In most instances, personalized tours book appointments with dealers in advance .

Which destinations are covered?

What are antique tours in Myanmar © The Antiques Diva

Tours span the globe . While a majority of antique tour companies cluster around Europe , some offer guides in Asia and the United States. “ France, Belgium and England are all-time favorites for antiquing,” says Haines whose company has guides on three continents. “Sweden definitely attracts an audience too.” Trends can influence where antique tours maintain a presence. “In recent years, Thailand has sprung up as a top destination for high end designers as globally chic interiors become more important in the design world,” she says.

What do tours cost?

Several factors impact prices. For one, location affects costs . For example, booking a tour in Milan or the Hamptons can be pricier than a tour in rural Germany. The degree of personalization can also sway prices. Group packages tend to carry lower rates. In general, expect a customized antique tour to range from $500 to $1500 for a 2-person booking. Consider additional costs too. When budgeting, leave some room for shipping fees and taxes .

Perks of specialty tours

On the one hand, custom tours can be pricey. Yet on the other, specialty services may save surprise costs and headaches. And ultimately tours strive to connect you with curated statement pieces that set your business apart from the rest.

• Local knowledge

Experts bring multi-faceted strengths. From navigating roads to staying current with hours of operation, a guided tour can get you where you need to go. And once there, local guides help break the language barrier to set deals in motion. Likewise, native speakers assist with questions about authenticity . “With my limited French, I would not have been able to get the full provenance about the piece,” Shaw says, “but the guide was pivotal to learning the complete story that I could share with my clients.”

• Stronger negotiation skills

Clear communication smooths the negotiation process. But there’s more to bargaining than reaching a number. Local guides are not only familiar with how specific dealers work, they are also aware of the cultural etiquette for haggling . Plus, antique tours bring a collective buying power . “You’re getting the buying power not of your budget, but of all of our clients coming together,” Haines says. “Dealers start at a more serious price point when they start talking to you because they know our clients aren’t buying one object, they’re building a container.”

• Access to more “under-the-radar” venues

Some flea markets and shops may run off the public grid. Whether pop-ups or by appointment only, it’s easy to miss hidden gems. Experts can book private appointments and after-hours visits . They may even know the inside scoop on personal collections for sale . “We never would have landed on this architectural yard that had a menagerie of fascinating things like marble mantles and tons of terra cotta olive jars – but again, we had an appointment,” Shaw says.

• Shipping concerns

Shipping and handling is often hard to handle alone. From how to label shipment manifests to customs rules , qualified antique tours know the ins and outs of exporting antiques from abroad . “If you’re buying a lot of objects, the price is really unknown until the shipper knows what they actually need to pack and what’s the safest way to get it to you,” Haines says. There’s also a risk of misidentifying goods, which can result in fines or even confiscation at customs.

Could you take an antique tour on your own?

Alexandra Palace Antiques Fair © IACF

Vintage treasure seekers can certainly plan a flea market shopping tour . Even the pros independently coordinate buying trips to stock up on merchandise. “I do all the planning, booking, and research,” says Duffy Hudson who, along with Helen Warrender, is a partner at Mostly French in Chattanooga, Tennessee . “I use quite a few resources like Antiques Diva, French brocante websites, and the flea market app,” he says of searching for information across multiple sites, including Fleamapket .

readymade art

6 flea market finds to create your own “readymade” artwork

Flexibility is also a big perk – especially when weather or the unexpected changes plans. “Serendipity has a lot to play in it,” Hudson says. “I can stop the car when Helen yells, ‘Antique!’”

Shopping in New York City is a tough adventure to make it through as is; but, when you’re sifting through the vintage clothing scene, it gets all the more difficult.

woman sifting through racks at an NYC thrift store

1. L Train Vintage

Locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan

For some of the best vintage shopping in New York, check out L Train Vintage. With three locations in Brooklyn and one location in the East Village, this is one of the best NYC vintage shops where you can find some incredible secondhand clothing and accessories.

As the name suggests, all of these shops are located off the L train, so if you can’t find what you’re looking for at one of them, just hop on the train and check out the next location!

2.  AuH2O Thriftique

84 E 7th Street, Manhattan

If you’re really looking to get thrifty, then look no further. Despite the small size of the store, AuH2O is guaranteed to have something you want.

This small boutique understands the struggle and aims to put forward an affordable and accessible selection. Most items in the store are under $25 – not to mention the $5 and $10 racks.

The best part is, rather than packing the cozy space with as many clothes as possible, AuH2O focuses on quality.

This shop is curated and handpicks every item in its stock to ensure the selection is wide and distinctive. So while this may not be the perfect store for your specific wants, it is a store that was meant to be browsed through.

Everything from handwoven dresses to vintage leather purses awaits you, and it’s all begging to be purchased!

vintage shopping in NYC at Beacon's Closet

3.  Beacon’s Closet

10 w 13th Street, Manhattan & Brooklyn locations in Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Park Slope

Prepare to breathe in style with Beacon’s Closet. Everything from the clothing selection to the design of the store takes a fashion-forward approach.

If you manage to survive beyond the fairy lights and glamorous mannequins, it’s the shoes that’ll strike you next.

What this shop offers is not your usual selection of footwear, so you’re bound to find what you’re looking for, along with something more.

And once you’ve found the perfect shoes, you’ll have no trouble putting together the perfect outfit, especially as the merchandise is organized by color!

The simplified search will bring you through a massive selection of high-end designers – everything from Alexander Wang to Victoria Beckham – all reasonably priced!

This franchise thrives for a reason. They’ve strived to establish their brand as trendy and they’ve been more than successful in doing so.

4. Metropolis Vintage

803 Broadway, Manhattan

For all your hardcore throwback needs, Metropolis is the place to be; it only takes a few seconds of sifting through the racks for this to become apparent.

Another shop well known for t-shirts, Metropolis offers everything from vintage Prince tees to souvenir Return of the Jedi shirts.

Whether you’re looking at the valuable collectibles on the walls or the hidden treasures in the $7 bins, the selection is wide and you’re bound to find something of interest.

If you manage to wrench yourself away from the tees, you’ll find that the venue is rather extensive with its vintage selection.

They offer everything from genuine military jackets to the sort of 80’s boots you’ve only ever seen on TV. The store, overall, bleeds authenticity in a manner that’s easy to appreciate.

the exterior of Cure Thrift Shop NYC

5.  Cure Thrift Shop

91 3rd Ave, Manhattan

This softly lit vintage shop has a boutique-like feel to it; something that comes as a surprise considering the size of its space. But despite its two floors of room, Cure manages to be crammed with products – which works out perfectly because it promises variety!

And sure enough, while clothing dominates the store quantity-wise, there are always a number of other things to catch your attention.

The ever-changing selection of antique furniture practically lines the walls; not to mention the scattered selection of quirky accessories that accompanies it.

Racks upon racks of scarves, earrings, artwork, and what can only be described as conversation pieces litter the store too.

And while their products may lean towards the expensive side, one of the best things about Cure is the fact that all proceeds are donated directly to the Diabetes Research Institute , so your money goes to a great cause.

6. Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange is actually a national chain of secondhand stores, so it may not be as unique as some of the other New York City vintage shops on this list, but it’s still a great place to look for secondhand clothing, shoes, and accessories at reasonable prices.

There are five Buffalo Exchange locations across New York, with three in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn. All of the stores are quite large, so you’ll find lots of variety.

7. 2nd Street

2nd Street is another one of the top spots for New York vintage shopping.

It originated in Japan, but now there are seven different locations around NYC. You’ll find 2nd Street in the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Union Square, NoHo, SoHo, the Lower East Side, and DUMBO.

This is a great place to shop if you are looking for vintage streetwear and designer clothing. Because of this, it can be a pricier place to shop, but you can still score some good deals.

8. Chickee’s Vintage

135 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn

Chickee’s Vintage is one of the best vintage shops in NYC, favored by fashion editors, celebrities, and other trendsetters.

This smaller shop located in Williamsburg doesn’t have a huge selection, but it prioritizes quality over quantity.

You can find some really cool pieces at Chickee’s Vintage, including vintage designer clothing and basic staples that never go out of style.

9. 10ft Single by Stella Dallas

285 N 6th St, Brooklyn

Another one of the best vintage stores in New York is 10ft Single by Stella Dallas. This is a large store in Williamsburg that has a varied selection of vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Williamsburg is one of the best neighborhoods for vintage shopping in NYC, so it’s no surprise that you’ll find this popular mainstay in the neighborhood too.

One of the best things about 10ft Single by Stella Dallas is that you can find funkier and more offbeat pieces. There’s also a selection of antique and vintage home goods here.

10. Mr. Throwback

437 E 9th St, Manhattan

Mr. Throwback is a niche vintage shop in New York that specializes in vintage sportswear from the 1980s and 1990s.

Located in the East Village, this shop boasts an impressive array of vintage apparel and merchandise for NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL sports teams.

Although it focuses primarily on vintage sportswear, you can also find a selection of throwback toys and video games as well as secondhand sneakers at Mr. Throwback.

Tucked away in a small shop front in the Lower East Side, Rogue is another gem for vintage shopping in NYC.

You’ll find vintage clothing from a variety of decades here, but an especially good selection of early 2000s clothing.

Perfect for hopping on the popular Y2K trend, Rogue is a great place to shop if you are looking for funky and unique secondhand clothing and accessories.

12. Grand Street Local

154 Grand St, Brooklyn

While you’re perusing the many vintage shops in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, don’t miss popping into Grand Street Local.

Although some of these rare prices can be on the pricier side, this is the perfect place to shop if you’re looking for really unique vintage clothing and accessories.

Old fashions are cool again: What to know and where to go to shop vintage in the Upstate

Incorporating vintage clothes into your wardrobe is a sustainable way to add a unique flair to your outfits. However, vintage shopping can be tricky for beginners.

Where should you shop? What should you look out for? How can you tell if an item is authentic? These are all questions David Parra, owner of Aged Attire, a vintage clothing shop in downtown Greer, has been finding the answers to since he started sourcing vintage finds as a teen.

“I’ve been sourcing, or looking for, vintage clothing ever since I was 16, and I was just selling it to high school friends,” Parra said. “It just kind of evolved into a love of thrifting, finding cool stuff.”

Aged Attire just celebrated its one-year anniversary on Trade Street.

“It’s been great,” Parra said. “I think we blend in really well with the culture of Greer. It’s a very artsy, yet calm city, especially downtown because there’s plenty of coffee shops, antique stores (and) boutiques.”

Parra answered some common questions and offered some tips and tricks for those looking to break into the world of vintage fashion this spring:

What is vintage clothing?

The common standard for vintage clothing is anything 20 years old or older.

You can find vintage pieces at thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales and, of course, at vintage clothing shops. Research is a key part of the hobby to make sure you aren’t tricked by a convincing reproduction.

“There's plenty of people on YouTube that explain what's vintage, what to look out for, what kind of stitching to look for, and stuff like that,” Parra said. “That's how I learned, and honestly, I feel like that's the best way.”

How can you tell if a piece of clothing is vintage vs a reproduction?

So how do you know if your 80s band tee is the real deal or a recent reprint?

Knowing vintage styles is important, but knowing vintage manufacturing methods is the real key.

“When it comes to actually going out shopping, I would say definitely do your research because nowadays people reprint old graphics,” said Parra, who has amassed a collection of vintage t-shirts in his shop. “You can tell by the tags, stitching, fading, the material that they use. Lots of different, very small details.”

Parra said many vintage clothes, especially jeans and T-shirts, were made of 100% cotton. Tags were sewn in and typically woven, not printed. Hems are typically single-stitched instead of double-stitched.

What should you keep in mind while vintage shopping?

Like with any secondhand clothing item, you’ll probably need to do more than just look at the size on the tag to determine if the item will fit you.

“If anything I would say size up slightly in vintage,” Parra said. “Most of the stuff was 100% cotton, they shrink. So, for example, Levi's jeans, if they were washed and dried so many times, they are going to be nowhere close to what the tag says. It can say it's a 32-inch waist when, in actuality, it’s like a 28.”

Knowing your measurements and bringing a tape measure with you when shopping can be helpful. Try on items if the shop allows.

If you’re hoping to sell or trade some of your finds, you should also keep up with fashion trends and grab some in-season items.

Parra said band and brand t-shirts, like Harley Davidson shirts, and pieces repping sports teams are always popular. Y2K styles and brands like Southpole and JNCO are the current trends.
