Frequently Asked Questions

What is a self guided tour?

A self-guided tour in Japan is a pre-planned travel package that provides you with a detailed itinerary, accommodation, and transportation options for exploring the country at your own pace. Unlike guided tours, you will not be accompanied by a tour guide, allowing you more flexibility and independence during your trip. You will also be handed a travelogue that give you information about all the details you may need while traveling in Japan.

Can I customize my self-guided tour?

You can customize your tour in some way by choosing among the different options, which typically include pre-night and post-night extension, meaning you can add one day before and/or after your trip. However, if you want to create your own itinerary by going to Okinawa Island for example, you can contact our team to create and tailor the perfect itinerary for your Japan experience, that caters to your interests and preferences.

How do I navigate Japan during my self-guided tour?

Japan has an efficient and extensive public transportation system, including trains, buses, and subways. The train is usually the go-to means of transport across cities in Japan. Our self-guided tour packages come with detailed detailed itineraries and Japan Rail Passes to help you navigate your way through Japan with ease. Additionally, most major cities have English signage, making it even more convenient for you to explore the country.

Are meals included in the self-guided tour packages?

Our self-guided tour packages usually include breakfast at your accommodations. Lunch and dinner are often not included, giving you the flexibility to explore Japan's diverse and delicious cuisine at your own pace. Please check the details for each day to know if the meals are included or not. We can also provide recommendations for local restaurants and dining experiences to suit your taste.

Can I extend my self-guided tour?

Yes, you can extend your self-guided tour by adding one extra day to your itinerary by selecting the option. However, if you want to change further the details of your trip, by adding a new destination for example, please contact our team, and we will be happy to help you plan an extended stay in Japan.

Do I need a visa? Do I need vaccinations?

As of October 11, 2022, Japan will open its borders to all Europeans (including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and North Americans (Canada and the United States) without requiring a visa.

Only non-triply vaccinated travelers need a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours prior to departure.

Do I still need a visa to travel to Japan as a tourist?

No, no visa is required for blue countries including all European countries (European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland included) and North American countries (Canada and United States). List of blue countries: https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html . If you have another nationality, please contact the Japanese embassy in your country of residence to obtain this visa.

Do I still need a PCR or antigen test to go to Japan?

No, if you are triple vaccinated with the vaccines approved by Japan (Pfizer, Moderna, ...exhaustive list here : https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html ) there is no need for any test.

I do not have 3 doses of vaccine or I am not vaccinated against COVID, can I enter Japan?

Proof of Covid vaccines is no longer required for travelers from "blue" countries. Therefore, unvaccinated travelers can enter Japan if they live in blue countries. But a negative PCR test is required at embarkation for travelers who are not vaccinated 3 times.

Is there still a quarantine upon arrival in Japan?

Quarantine and testing on arrival have been eliminated for travelers from blue countries.

Is insurance mandatory?

No, but it is recommended. Japan Experience, as an option of its tours, provides appropriate travel insurance solutions.

What anti-covid measures are still in place in Japan?

The mask must be worn indoors (except in exceptional cases) and in transportation.

What applications should I download before entering Japan?

For tracking the evolution of the coronavirus epidemic, the Japanese government recommends downloading several applications:

MySOS, the health and location tracking app (it will be used to confirm your location, health status and accommodation).

COCOA, the COVID-19 contact confirmation app (this will be used to notify you of possible contact with a COVID-19 positive person).

What people love about self-guided tours in japan.

Explanation of tour not detailed effectively. TOKYO Tickets for Hakone from Tokyo. (Romance train). Unclear of necessary tickets and no information relayed. ie a freepass was required for platform entry. A representative was expected for information re transport difficulties due to language barriers and an insight into the tour. We only got a package delivered to the hotel and never saw a representative. TRAIN JRP information not clear. ie could not book tickets from other stations and ticket sale needed to be from the actual departure station. Wasted time queuing twice for two hours. Name spelled wrong on one persons JRP. Ticket office were not going to issue the JRP and we had to argue it was a misspelling. Another delay. We appreciate it was a semi independent tour but could have done it ourselves. We joined a tour purposely to be more organised for us with clearer instructions. Tour guides for 2 half days only although it stated 1 full day and a half day. Only visited the Golden Temple and castle. Guide left us at the palace. If we had not purchased a remote WIFI at the airport for maps and translating we would have struggled to get around. Price did not match tour inadequacy. As you were informed prior to the tour, we were not staying overnight in Osaka. Was this reflected in the price? POSITIVES Previous Touradour TOURS I booked were excellent with efficient organisation and support. However, this was lacking the guidance. Tour guides were lovely people. Hakone No shower however loved the original Ryokan and excellent food. Hotels were all excellent with very good breakfasts and amenities. Overall we had a great holiday but feel the price certainly did not reflect the lack of communication and service.
Japan when it comes to cleanliness excellent. Organized tour very good, most especially when it comes for help ,can reached right away most especially (whats app Bamba Mexico ) a Thank you ,muy bien
Had a wonderful trip . There was a slight problem with accomodation, but Mr Saurabh acted pretty quick and took care of the matter. Appreciate his customer service a lot.

"This tour is very expensive for what you actually get, as nearly all of the travel is on public transport which is very time consuming. So much time was taken up on public transport that there was not enough time to explore the places we visited.

Tour Details

In the best that Japan has to offer, you’ll enjoy a colorful mix of large cities like Tokyo and Osaka, quaint and traditional Takayama, the religious center of Koya-san, the ancient shrines and temples of Kyoto, the testament to peace of Hiroshima, and more.

You’ll stay overnight at a mountain-top Buddhist temple where Buddhist monks will serve you meals of Shojin Ryori (the traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), attend prayer services at the temple early the next morning, and much, much more. You’ll visit Tokyo where the sheer energy will carry you away. From the Hakone area, you will get a view of the iconic Mt. Fuji (weather permitting).

You’ll explore Takayama where the locals have managed to maintain its traditional charm and where time seems to stand still. Finally, you’ll tour Kyoto. Kyoto with its Geishas dressed in their colorful kimonos and its narrow, cobblestone-paved alleys evokes the very image of Japan. A walk through Kyoto is a walk through over 1,000 years of Japanese history.

Day 2 Tokyo – Tokyo Tower, Ginza, Asakusa

After breakfast, the licensed, English-speaking guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel/ryokan. The guided tour will start with traveling to Tokyo Tower. The Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower in the center of Tokyo. At 332.9 metres (1,092 ft), it is the second-tallest structure in Japan. The structure is an Eiffel Tower-inspired lattice tower with a main observatory at 150 meters that is reached via elevator or a 600-step staircase. Thanks to the tower’s central location, the observatory offers an interesting view of the city despite being only at a relatively moderate height. Afterwards we will travel to the famous Ginza district. Ginza is recognized by many as one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world, attracting visitors and regulars alike from across the globe. Before continuing we will stop for a Kushiage lunch (fried meat and vegetables on bamboo skewers). Next we will travel to the nearby Asakusa area. Here we will tour the Nakamise-dori, Senso-ji Buddhist Temple and the Asakusa Shrine where you will learn about Buddhist and Shinto Japanese religious practices. Breakfast at the hotel and lunch at a local restaurant include

Travel: 1 1/2 Hours; Walking: Medium

Day 3 Tokyo

Today is free to explore Tokyo. We recommend starting the day by traveling to Tsukiji Market, the world’s largest fish market. It is estimated that 20% of all the fish caught in the world pass through this market. There are two parts to the Tsukiji Market- the inner market and the outer market. The inner market is for wholesale business and the outer market is for retail. There are so many more exciting places to visit in Tokyo. You may want to go shopping for that perfect souvenir, visit the Meiji Shrine dedicated to the Japanese emperor of the 19th century, or wander through the trendy Shibuya or Harajuku districts where you will more than likely see interesting and far-out fashions. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Travel: TBD

Day 4 Travel to Kamakura; Tour Kamakura; Travel to Hakone

Before checking out, you will transfer your main luggage to Takayama, and will be traveling to Hakone and Takayama with overnight bags only. You will travel by local trains to the ancient city of Kamakura, the former capital of Japan in the 13th century. You can visit Hase-dera temple, originally established in the 8th century which houses a famous Kannon statue made from wood and gold leaf, and also has a commanding view of the nearby ocean. Next you can visit Kotokuin, the home of the famous Kamakura Great Buddha. This 40-foot tall bronze statue of Buddha, built in the 13th century is an icon of Japan. Later in the afternoon, you will travel by local trains to Hakone Yumoto onsen. Here you can rest and relax the in thermally-heated mineral waters of the bath at the ryokan. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Day 5 Tour Hakone; Travel to Takayama

After checking out, you will tour the Hakone area. Hakone is famous for its natural beauty and the view of nearby Mt. Fuji (weather permitting). Be sure to stop at the Owakudani. Owakudani offers magnificent views of Mount Fuji in what is still an active volcanic region. Here at Owakudani, you will have free time to explore the thermally-heated pools and mud pots. You can try one of the “black eggs” which are eggs hard-boiled in the thermally-heated mineral waters. It is said that if you eat one of these eggs it will add seven years to your life (it is probably said by the people who sell the eggs). Late in the afternoon, you will travel by local train, bullet train and express train to Takayama. Takayama, in the middle of the Japan Alps, with its traditional inns, shops, and sake breweries, has managed to retain its traditional charm. After checking in you can enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants specializing in Hida Beef. Hida Beef is the same thing as the more famous Kobe Beef. You will retrieve your main luggage from your hotel in Takayama. Breakfast at the ryokan is included.

Travel: 5 Hours

Day 6 Tour Takayama

We recommend starting the morning at the farmers market strolling past the vegetable stands and stalls selling herbs, pickles, and souvenirs, sampling the numerous options as you go. In the afternoon, the choices for what to do are abundant. You can explore the Takayama Jinya, visit the many temples, see numerous shrines and museums, rummage through antique shops, or relax at one of sake breweries. You may also take the bus to the Hida-no-Sato Open Air Museum with its traditional, thatched-roof homes from the surrounding area, or visit the Yatai Kaikan, a museum chronicling the famous festival held every April and October in Takayama. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Travel: N/A

Day 7 Travel to Koya-san; Overnight at a Buddhist Temple

Before checking out, you will transfer your main luggage to Osaka. You will board an express train and Shinkansen bound for Osaka, and continue on to Koya-san by train and funicular. Koya-san is the world headquarters of the Shingon school of Esoteric Buddhism. Kobo Daishi, considered by many to be the most influential religious person in Japanese history, established a religious community here in the year 816. After checking into your shukubo (Buddhist temple lodging), you are free to roam and visit one of the 110 temples in the area, wander through the nearby ghostly cemetery at the famous Okuno-in temple, or just rest in the garden at the shukubo. Your dinner of shojin-ryori (traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine – no meat, fish, onions or garlic) will be served. Breakfast at the hotel and dinner at the temple included.

Travel: 7 Hours

Day 8 Tour Koya-san; Travel to Osaka

Very early in the morning, you can attend o-inori (Buddhist prayer service). After the prayer service, a shojin-ryori breakfast is served. Following breakfast you can tour the Garan and Kongobu-ji Temples, or wander through the huge cemetery leading up to the Okuno-in Temple, where Kobo Daishi is buried. Many Japanese still believe that Kobo Daishi is not dead, but merely in a very advanced state of meditation, waiting to awaken at the appropriate time. In the afternoon, you will travel by funicular and train back to the city of Osaka. In the evening, you can enjoy the famous South Osaka entertainment districts of Dotombori, Shin-Sekai and Namba. You will retrieve your main luggage from your hotel in Osaka. Breakfast at the temple is included.

Travel: 3 Hours

Day 9 Travel to Himeji; Tour Himeji; Travel to Hiroshima (optional Miyajima Island upgrade available)

Before leaving in the morning, you will transfer your main luggage to Kyoto. On your way from Osaka to Hiroshima you can tour the Himeji Castle, a significant piece of architecture from the Feudal Period. Built about 400 years ago, Himeji Castle is one of the largest and oldest original castles, and is one of only four castles designated as a national treasure and is also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, you will travel by Shinkansen to Hiroshima, or you can choose to upgrade to the Miyajima Island option and travel by ferry across the bay where you will stay on the island. Breakfast at the hotel is included (dinner at the ryokan included for the upgrade option).

Day 10 Tour Miyajima Island

Today you will visit Miyajima Island, considered by the Japanese to be one of the three most beautiful spots in Japan. You can ride the cable car to the top of the mountain on Miyajima Island, visit the Itsukushima-jinja shrine which was built in its present form in 1168, or just take in the beauty and ambiance of Miyajima Island while enjoying grilled oysters, the island’s specialty. Breakfast at the hotel/ryokan included.

Day 11 Tour Hiroshima; Travel to Kyoto

In the morning you can tour the Peace Memorial Museum and the Peace Memorial Park, both sobering testaments to the dropping of the A-bomb on August 6, 1945. In the afternoon, you will travel by Shinkansen (bullet train) to the city of Kyoto. For many, just the name of Kyoto conjures up the classic images of Japan: streets of traditional wooden houses, the click-clack of geta (wooden sandals) on the paving stones, geisha in a flourish of brightly colored silks, and a tea master warming water and making tea. You will retrieve your main luggage from the hotel in Kyoto. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Day 12 Tour Kyoto

Today is free to explore Kyoto on your own. Steeped in history and tradition, Kyoto has in many ways been the cradle of Japanese culture. A stroll through Kyoto today is a walk through 11 centuries of Japanese history. Here you can visit Kinkaku-ji. Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s, as well as Japan’s, most recognizable attractions. The gleaming building covered in gold leaf seems to float on the aptly named Mirror Pond, especially on a sunny day. If you would like, visit Nijo Castle next. Built in 1603, it was the Kyoto home of Tokugawa Ieayasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun. The ostentatious style of construction was intended as a demonstration of Ieyasu’s prestige, and to signal the demise of the emperor’s power. The finest artists of the day filled the castle with delicate transom woodcarvings and paintings by the Kano School on sliding doors. One of the castle’s most intriguing features is the so-called “nightingale” floors. To protect the Shogun from real or imagined enemies, these floorboards creak when stepped on. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Day 13 Tour Kyoto

Today we suggest you travel by train to the nearby city of Fushimi, one of the largest sake producing regions of Japan. Here you can visit the Fushimi Inari shrine. This Shinto Shrine, established in the 8th century, is famous for the long tunnels of vermilion torii gates straddling a network of trails leading to the top of the heavily forested Mt. Inari. Next, you can visit the famous Kiyomizu-dera temple. Kiyomizu-dera literally translates to “Pure Water Temple”. For centuries, visitors and pilgrims have climbed the hill to the temple standing on a steep hillside with fine views of the city of Kyoto. Supported by 139 pillars, the temple juts out over the valley. Finding the courage to set out on a daring, new adventure is likened to “taking a leap from the veranda of Kiyomizu”. From Kiyomizu, you can walk through the Higashiyama District of Kyoto. This area of narrow, cobblestone alleys with its numerous shops and restaurants is truly enjoyable and relaxing. Next, walk to the famous Gion Geisha District. Here, you will see where the Geisha live and work. You may even see one on their way to one of their appointments. Breakfast at the hotel is included.

Day 14 Return Home

It’s time to say “sayonara” (goodbye) to Japan. You will take the express train to the Kansai International Airport (Osaka), or return to Narita Airport (Tokyo) by Shinkansen and express train for your flight back home (if you are flying out of Narita Airport, be sure to schedule a flight after 15:00) If you sent your luggage ahead, you will need to retrieve the luggage in the Departure lobby of the airport. Breakfast at the ryokan included.

Judy Fantham and David Hillock

This was a real adventure for us and it put to the test our cognitive abilities to navigate the transit system. But a self-guided tour allowed us to set our own agenda (to a degree) and visit restaurants and sites that may have been otherwise inaccessible by a large group.

If you are looking for an epic alpine adventure this winter, then Hakuba is one of the very best destinations in Asia if not the world. Host to the Winter Olympics in 1998, the ski resorts in Japanese alps compares favourably with the best resorts in Europe and North America. With a staggering 11m of snowfall annually (almost 4 times snowfall of leading resorts in the French Alps) there are more fresh tracks to be had and more bumper powder days to enjoy that most could resorts dream of. Only its competitor resort Niseko in the north Island of Japan can beat Hakuba in terms of regular powder snowfall. But, whilst Niseko may get heavier snowfall, the 10 resorts side by side in the Hakuba valley (sharing a common All-Mountain lift pass and with free shuttle buses between each) offer a more compelling range of terrain and slopes to explore.

A resort for all levels from beginner to advanced, you can choose from selection of 10 ski resorts, 137 ski lifts, 9 terrain parks, night skiing until 10pm and an endless choice of hiking trails. Suggested itinerary

After touching down at the airport, you'll continue to the city centre.

Tokyo, Japan's capital, is a city unlike any other, home to innovative, cutting-edge design and traditional culture. Immerse yourself in cultural experiences, visit exquisitely landscaped gardens, and admire the city's high-tech side; there is something for everyone. For the foodie, there's plenty to indulge in whether you visit the Michelin star-rated restaurants or cosy hidden izakayas (food pubs) in your local neighbourhood.

During your stay in Tokyo, you'll be living central, allowing for quick access to all of Tokyo's sights and attractions. You can also find countless bars, restaurants, shopping malls, game halls, and cafes to explore in your local area.

We recommend visiting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory in Shinjuku as an easy afternoon activity on your arrival day. You can learn everything there is to know about the beloved city while taking in the breathtaking views of the cityscape. After, grab dinner at a local ramen store or izakaya.

Kick-off your first full day by exploring Tokyo's bustling streets. Due to its size, we recommend deciding on specific areas to explore; ideally, two to three neighbourhoods are sufficient for a day's worth of sightseeing.   Recommended must-see sights include the Imperial Palace Plaza, Senso-ji temple (the oldest in Tokyo), Tokyo Skytree, the Tsukiji fish market, and the fashionable Ginza district with its grand boulevards and top-notch department stores.

For lunch, there are plenty of options to choose from; experience the joys of a tasty bowl of local ramen or soba (buckwheat noodles), or try a Japanese set lunch known as teishoku. These set deals typically include rice, miso soup, one or two main dishes, and tea.

To end your day on a high note, we recommend dining in Roppongi Hills at one of the many stylish restaurants. For a late-night activity, head to Tokyo Skytree with its 360-degree view of Tokyo.

Tokyo – Day Trip to Nikko

If you are looking for a day trip out of the city, Nikko is a must-have on your travel list. Two and a half hours north of Tokyo, Nikko is just a direct train away from Tokyo's Asakusa station.

Among the many attractions of Nikko is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Toshogu Shrine. This unique destination serves as a mausoleum for shogun (political leader) Tokugawa Ieyasu, the great military leader of the early 17th century. After, explore the beautiful national park complete with expansive lakes and picturesque waterfalls surrounding the shrine.

If you have time, a visit to the Tamozawa Imperial Villa is worthwhile. The villa, which was erected in 1899, uses parts of a previous building that stood in Tokyo.

Before being moved to Nikko, the building had previously served as the Tokyo residence of the Tokugawa family and temporarily as the Imperial Palace. Once relocated, the building became a summer residence and retreat for the Imperial Family. Before taking the train back to Tokyo, try Nikko's high-quality wagyu beef at the Nikko Kanaya Hotel restaurant.

For your final day in Tokyo, we suggest a visit to the neighbourhood of Harajuku, the birthplace of Tokyo's most eccentric fashion movements. Down Takeshita Dori, you can find trendy fashion boutiques, uniquely themed cafes, alluring speciality stores and people-watch the stylish characters of Harajuku.

After Harajuku, visit the relaxing Yoyogi Park located right next to Harajuku Station, and take a little stroll through the park and visit the tranquil Meiji Jingu shrine - one of Japan's most famous shrines.

If classical Japanese paintings pique your interest, the Ota Memorial Museum of Art is a close walk away. The museum carries a small but impressive collection of Ukiyo-e works, including woodblock prints and paintings, dating back to Japan's Edo period (1600-1868).

To end the day off with a bang, check out the neighbouring city of Shibuya, visit Shibuya Scramble Square for excellent city views and end the day with some kaiten (revolving) sushi.

Tokyo – Memanbetsu – Shiretoko National Park and Utoro Onsen

Today you'll leave the hustle and bustle of Tokyo for the tranquillity and wild nature of Hokkaido. It's a two-hour domestic flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to reach Memanbetsu Airport, located on Hokkaido's northeast coast.

At Memanbetsu, you'll pick up your rental car and set off on your drive to the Shiretoko Peninsula and the small town of Utoro Onsen. The drive is approximately 90 kilometres along the coast and full of excellent ocean views.

Utoro is located on Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO Natural Heritage-listed national park. It's primarily known for its hot springs ('onsen' in Japanese), many of which are connected to the various ryokan (Japanese inn) around town, where you will also be spending the night. Try and arrive in advance to take full advantage of the relaxing baths with breathtaking views of unspoiled nature before the traditional dinner usually served around 6.00 pm.

Shiretoko National Park and Utoro Onsen

Today is dedicated to the many wonders of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Shiretoko National Park contains some of the most pristine nature in Japan and an abundance of rare animal species.

Shiretoko Peninsula is home to opportunities to embark on thrilling whale and bear watching cruises. During the chilly winter months, early morning cruises depart from Rausu, where you can witness the majestic bird species that northern Japan has to offer, like the striking Steller's sea eagle.

Make sure you don't miss the chance to visit the Shiretoko Park Nature Centre located at the National Park entrance. The centre serves as a rest stop, complete with a restaurant and gift shop and includes excellent information on the local area.

Utoro Onsen - Akan Mashu National Park and Lake Akan

Continuing your Hokkaido car journey southwest, you will reach Akan Mashu National Park, another stunning forest only a two and a half journey away. The park's extraordinary landscape has been shaped by thousands of years of volcanic activity, and it is also renowned for its pristine volcanic lakes, including Lake Akan, home to the unique and vibrant green moss-like balls known as marimo.

After exploring the national park, arrive at your ryokan with plenty of time to explore what the lakeside has to offer. Heading back to the ryokan, take a well-deserved bath in the hot springs absorbing the beautiful lakeside views and end the day dining in style with the superb traditional dishes the ryokan has to offer.

Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo and/or Kushiro Marshland

Today you will have a full day in the Lake Akan area, where we recommend also visiting the two other impressive crater lakes in the National Park, Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo.

Lake Mashu is one of the best lake views in all of northern Japan. Surrounded by steep crater walls 200 metres (660 feet) high, it is one of the clearest lakes in the world and one of Japan's deepest.

Lake Kussharo, located 30 minutes from Lake Mashu, is another lovely caldera lake with a circumference of 57 kilometres, making it the largest lake in Akan Mashu National Park. Fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling are just a few of the outdoor activities available in the area. For those interested in bird watching, you can also drive nearby to Kushiro Marshland National Park to spot Japanese cranes.

Lake Akan - Daisetsuzan National Park and Asahidake Onsen

Today you will travel to Asahidake Onsen located in Daisetsuzan National Park. Enjoy the scenic four and a half hour journey through sloped landscapes, meadows, valleys, and gorges. Daisetsuzan National Park is Hokkaido's largest national park, preserving a mountainous area of virtually untouched wilderness larger than some of Japan's smaller prefectures. It's a hiker and outdoor enthusiast's dream!

Your base will be the small town of Asahidake Onsen, located at the foot of Mount Asahidake, Hokkaido's highest mountain (2290 meters). From here, you can take a ride on the Asahidake Ropeway cable car up the mountain. Daisetsuzan National Park has many hiking trails and is well-known for being one of the first places in Japan to see autumn colours as early as September.

Daisetsuzan National Park or Sounkyo

Today is a day of exploring the natural beauty of Hokkaido, either going deep into the Daisetsuzan National Park and hiking trails near Asahidake Onsen.

Alternatively, relaxing in Sounkyo, a hot spring town northwest of Daisetsuzan, is another excellent option. Bask in the renowned hot springs amidst pristine nature in a region comprising of gorges and 100-metre-high cliffs. The scenic resort town of Sounkyo is one of Hokkaido's top hot spring resorts, with the cosy village centre offering both modern and traditional onsen bath options, beautiful waterfalls with hiking opportunities and a plethora of dining options with restaurants nearby. Additionally, take the chance to witness a different perspective of Hokkaido's natural beauty with a mile-long cable lift ride accessible nearby Sounkyo to Mount Kurodake.

From here, you can choose to add a four-day extension program to your Hokkaido trip, including visits to the scenic volcanic Lake Toya (Shikotsu-Toya National Park) and the port city of Hakodate!

Asahidake Onsen - Shikotsu-Toya National Park - Lake Toya

Your extended excursion begins with a scenic 318-kilometre drive from Asahidake Onsen to Shikotsu-Toya National Park. To divide the trip, the towns of Biei and Furano are great resting spots.

The town of Biei is known for its captivating Aoi-ike (Blue Pond), while Furano is noted for its expansive lavender fields that blossom in June and July.

As you reach the shores of Lake Toya, you will arrive at your ryokan, where you will be spending two nights. As previously mentioned, arriving earlier will give you time to soak in the baths before enjoying the delectable dinner on offer.

Lake Toya or Lake Shikotsu

Day 2 of the extension trip consists of a full day in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Here you can roam around the volcanic Lake Toya and take a visit to Noboribetsu Onsen, Hokkaido's most famous spa town.

Above the town of Noboribetsu Onsen is Jigokudani (地獄谷), also known as Hell Valley, which is the main source of Noboribetsu's hot spring waters. Although a picturesque and exciting destination, watch out for the hot steam vents, sulfurous streams and other volcanic activity!

Those who can't get enough of Hokkaido's long scenic car rides can take a drive to Lake Shikotsu, a small town on the lake's eastern shore that has a visitor centre and a few lodging options. Here you will be able to rent boats, bicycles and scuba gear or join a sightseeing cruise on the lake in glass-bottomed boats.

Lake Toya - Hakodate

Wake up early to enjoy breakfast and a final onsen dip before heading off to the port city of Hakodate, only a two-hour drive away. Hakodate is a well-kept local secret and home to amazing panoramic city views, best admired from Mount Hakodate.

The city was one of the first Japanese ports to open to foreign trade in the 19th century, after 250 years of international isolation. Here you can explore unique buildings such as the Russian Orthodox Church, an Old British Consulate, a Chinese Memorial Hall and the old Hakodate Public Hall.

Hakodate - Matsumae

The last day of the extended excursion is a full day in Hakodate and the nearby town of Matsumae.

Start the day off with a visit to Fort Goryokaku, built in the final years of the Edo Period (mid-nineteenth century) to protect Hakodate from the imperialist threat posed by Western powers.

After you explore Fort Goryokaku, head to the town of Matsumae. Home to the only Japanese style castle to have been built in Hokkaido, the town is located one and a half to two hours from Hakodate. In the springtime, you will be able to witness the stunning blossoming of the ten thousand cherry trees surrounding the castle grounds.

Lastly, while visiting Hakodate, we recommend taking the opportunity to taste some of the delicious, fresh seafood for which the city is known.

Asahidake Onsen - Sapporo

Your final drive of this exciting Hokkaido exploration tour will be to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido and Japan's fifth-largest city.

If you booked the optional package, the trip is four hours from Hakodate. If you didn't book the optional package, your trip is about three and a half hours from Asahidake.

After arriving in Sapporo, you drop off your car near your hotel. The final stay of your Hokkaido holiday will be two days and nights in this bustling northern city. In Sapporo, you will find a good mix of Japanese culture and foreign influences, with plenty of scenic sights, both natural and man-made.

The annual Sapporo Snow Festival (held in early February) draws more than two million tourists from abroad. Other places worth sites include the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo TV Tower located in Odori Park.

Today is one final day of leisure in Sapporo and an excellent opportunity to go shopping and make the last purchases before you head home. Finally, try some of the local delicacies like Sapporo's miso ramen, soup curry, and grilled lamb known as jingisukan, best enjoyed with a glass of Sapporo beer.

Return flight

It's time to say 'sayonara' (goodbye) or maybe 'matanee' (see you again) to Japan. You'll transfer from your hotel to Sapporo's New Chitose Airport. We hope you've enjoyed your adventure through Hokkaido, Japan's truly undiscovered gem!

Situated along the Sea of Japan coast, the Sanin Coastal region stretches from the Tango peninsula in Northern Kyoto prefecture west to Hyogo and Tottori prefectures. Today, the old capital of Kyoto city is known for its rich culinary traditions, however it is from the northern part of Kyoto and the wider Sanin coastal region, an area blessed with rich fertile land and clean water, where much of the freshest seafood and seasonal ingredients have been sourced since ancient times.

The vast Sanin Kaigan UNESCO Geopark also offers a variety of stunning ocean and mountain views with gentle coastal walks. The region's numerous geo-thermal hot springs means you’ll have consistent opportunities to experience tranquil onsen hot spring lodgings along the way, taking in the Sanin region’s idyllic mix of luxury and rustic charm.

In addition to overnight stays in restorative Onsen Ryokan, the tour also includes a night in a unique private Funaba seaside inn along the bay in Ine village. Your journey allows multiple opportunities to explore the villages on foot or by bicycle in a few locations.

Due to the gentle nature of the optional walking and cycling, this tour is ideal for couples and families. As an alternative to the morning walk at Mt. Oe on Day 2, it is also possible to join a unique culinary experience with a local expert to learn about the deep world of Japanese miso cultivation, and its distinct health benefits as a fermented superfood. Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

Once you arrive in Tokyo, transfer directly to your flight to Fukuoka. Once in Fukuoka, a representative will meet you at the airport to guide you through arrivals. They will then show you to the waiting transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing after your long flight. One recommendation would be to stay local and enjoy 'yatai' or street food in and around Canal City in Hakata.

Fukuoka, Japan

Spend the morning exploring the vibrant city of Fukuoka. The canals running through the city give a unique flavor. In the evening head out for a street food tour for a true introduction to Kyushu cuisine.

Fresh seafood in Fukuoka

Pick up your hire car today and drive to the onsen village of Kurokawa and spend the rest of the day at leisure relaxing in the sumptuous hot springs.

Kurokawa river and bridge

There are some nice walks to be done or make use of your hire car to explore more of the area. You can also take advantage of a day pass to visit other hot springs in the village.

Onsen spa tags, Kurokawa

Travel south to the sheer limestone cliffs of Takachiho Gorge. Once freshened up, perhaps hire a rowing boat and drift gently along the river through waterfalls and cliff faces.

Takachiho Gorge, Kyushu

Make the drive down south to the small coastal town of Ibusuki famous for the hot sand bathing on offer in the area.

Sunset in Ibusuki

From Ibusuki head up to the larger city of Kagoshima, not before stopping off in the small town of Chiran to see the Kamikaze museum and samurai residences.

Mt. Sakurajima, Kagoshima

Spend a day in the city of Kagoshima. The most prominent feature of Kagoshima is its location in the shadow of the enormous Sakurajima volcano. The active volcano often spews ash over the city and leaves the residents with the almost daily task of sweeping ash from their driveways.

Kagoshima ramen

Take a short drive to the Kirishima National Park, a fantastic destination for hikers of all levels.

Kirishima National Park, Japan

At leisure, visit Kirishima National Park to enjoy some of the many walking trails and soak up the beautifully verdant green of this part of Kyushu.

Kirishima National Park

Return to Kagoshima, drop off your hire car and board the train to Kumamoto and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Our recommendation for the afternoon is to visit Kumamoto Castle and its nearby Suizenji gardens.

View from Kumamoto Castle

A short drive to the port to board the car ferry over to Unzen Peninsula from where you climb the mountain via the sulfuric bubbling pools at the top of Mount Unzen. After, head back down the mountain over to Nagasaki Bay and the city itself.

Shrine grounds, Nagasaki

At leisure in Nagasaki. It's worth visiting the small yet quite harrowing peace museum, but more of what Nagasaki has to offer is in town, such as Glover Garden, on which 'Madame Butterfly' was based, and Dejima Wharf at sunset.

Nagasaki bay

At leisure, explore 'Gunkanjima' or 'Battleship Island', infamous for its eerily vacant and uninhabited atmosphere often used in movies.

Dejima manmade island

Continue by train to Hakata, a lovely journey along the coast and through paddy fields. Once in Fukuoka, enjoy the remainder of your evening in this compact but buzzy modern city.

Fukuoka chicken hotpot 'mizutaki'

Take the easy subway line to the airport and board your flight back to Tokyo for a final night in the capital.

Asakusa shrine, Tokyo

Take the airport shuttle bus to the airport and board your return flight.

Ginza nightlife, Tokyo

The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for a Self-Driving Tour in Japan

' src=

Self-driving tours in Japan have become increasingly popular among tourists who want to explore the country at their own pace. With its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and well-maintained road infrastructure, Japan offers a unique and rewarding experience for those who choose to embark on a self-driving adventure. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene countryside of Hokkaido, there is something for everyone to discover on a self-driving tour in Japan.

Understanding Self-Driving Regulations in Japan

Before embarking on a self-driving tour in Japan, it is important to familiarize yourself with the country’s driving laws and regulations. In Japan, driving is done on the left side of the road, similar to countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. It is also mandatory to have a valid driver’s license from your home country or an International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to drive in Japan. Obtaining an IDP is relatively straightforward and can be done through your local automobile association or motor vehicle department. The IDP serves as a translation of your driver’s license and must be carried along with your original license while driving in Japan. It is important to note that the IDP is only valid if accompanied by your original driver’s license.

Choosing the Right Car Rental Company

When planning a self-driving tour in Japan, choosing the right car rental company is crucial. Factors to consider include the company’s reputation, availability of English-speaking staff, range of vehicle options, and pricing. Some popular car rental companies in Japan include Toyota Rent a Car, Nissan Rent a Car, and Times Car Rental. It is recommended to book your rental car in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, as availability may be limited. When renting a car in Japan, it is important to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of the rental agreement. This includes information about insurance coverage, fuel policy, and any additional fees that may apply. However, if you want to take a very long trip to Japan, you better use your own car. Car shipping is not complex and annoying if you find a reliable freight forwarding company .

Planning Your Route and Itinerary

One of the most exciting aspects of a self-driving tour in Japan is the freedom to plan your own route and itinerary. There are several popular self-driving routes in Japan that offer a variety of landscapes and attractions. Some of these include the Golden Route, which takes you from Tokyo to Kyoto via Mount Fuji, and the Hokkaido Scenic Byway, which allows you to explore the beautiful countryside of Hokkaido. When planning your itinerary, it is important to consider the driving distances between destinations and allocate enough time for sightseeing and rest stops. It is also recommended to research and include popular attractions along your route, such as historic temples, picturesque gardens, and local markets. Additionally, be sure to check for any road closures or construction that may affect your planned route.

Navigating Japanese Roads and Signage

Navigating Japanese roads can be a bit challenging for first-time visitors due to the language barrier and unfamiliar road signs. However, with some preparation and understanding of Japanese road signage, it can be easily managed. Japanese road signs use a combination of symbols and kanji characters. Some common symbols include a red circle with a white horizontal line through it, which indicates a prohibition or restriction, and a blue square with a white arrow, which indicates a mandatory direction. To navigate Japanese roads effectively, it is recommended to use a GPS navigation system or smartphone app that supports English language instructions. This will help you stay on track and avoid getting lost. It is also important to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road in Japan, such as speed limits and right-of-way.

Essential Items to Pack for Your Self-Driving Tour

When embarking on a self-driving tour in Japan, it is important to pack essential items that will enhance your comfort and convenience during the trip. Some recommended items to pack include a portable Wi-Fi device or SIM card for internet connectivity, a GPS navigation system or smartphone with a reliable navigation app, a paper map as a backup, and a portable phone charger. Other essential items include a first aid kit, a flashlight, a roadside emergency kit, and a portable umbrella. It is also recommended to pack comfortable clothing and footwear, as well as snacks and drinks for the journey. Additionally, be sure to pack any necessary documents, such as your driver’s license, IDP, and rental car agreement.

Preparing for Toll Roads and Parking

In Japan, toll roads are common and can be quite expensive, especially for long-distance travel. It is important to be prepared for tolls and plan your budget accordingly. Most toll roads in Japan accept cash or electronic payment methods such as ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) cards. If you plan on using toll roads frequently during your self-driving tour, it may be worth considering renting a car equipped with an ETC card. This will allow you to pass through toll gates without having to stop and pay manually. ETC cards can be obtained from car rental companies or purchased at convenience stores. Finding parking in Japan can also be challenging, especially in crowded cities like Tokyo. It is recommended to research parking options in advance and consider using paid parking lots or garages. Some hotels and attractions may offer parking facilities for guests, but it is important to check availability and pricing beforehand.

Tips for Driving in Different Weather Conditions

Japan experiences a wide range of weather conditions throughout the year, from hot summers to cold winters and everything in between. When driving in different weather conditions, it is important to take extra precautions to ensure your safety on the road. During rainy weather, it is important to drive at a slower speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Wet roads can be slippery, so it is important to avoid sudden braking or acceleration. It is also recommended to use your headlights and windshield wipers for better visibility. In snowy or icy conditions, it is crucial to drive slowly and cautiously. It is recommended to equip your rental car with snow tires or chains, especially if you plan on driving in mountainous areas. It is also important to keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid sudden manoeuvres.

Finding the Best Places to Eat and Stay

One of the highlights of a self-driving tour in Japan is the opportunity to discover and indulge in the country’s renowned cuisine. From sushi and ramen to tempura and yakitori, there is something for every palate. When planning your itinerary, be sure to research popular restaurants and local specialties along your route. In terms of accommodations, Japan offers a wide range of options to suit every budget and preference. From luxury hotels and traditional ryokans to budget-friendly guesthouses and capsule hotels, there is something for everyone. It is recommended to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

Exploring Japan’s Hidden Gems

While popular tourist destinations like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are must-visit places in Japan, there are also many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. These lesser-known attractions offer a unique and authentic experience away from the crowds. Some hidden gems in Japan include the historic town of Kanazawa, known for its well-preserved samurai and geisha districts, the picturesque village of Shirakawa-go with its traditional thatched-roof houses, and the remote island of Yakushima, home to ancient cedar forests and natural hot springs. When planning your self-driving tour, be sure to include some of these hidden gems in your itinerary for a truly memorable experience.

Staying Safe on the Road

Safety should always be a top priority when embarking on a self-driving tour in Japan. It is important to follow traffic rules and regulations, drive defensively, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Some safety tips for driving in Japan include wearing seat belts at all times, avoiding distractions such as using mobile phones while driving, and refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is also important to be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists, especially in crowded urban areas. In case of an emergency or breakdown, it is recommended to have the contact information of your car rental company and insurance provider readily available. It is also important to have a basic understanding of Japanese phrases related to emergencies and roadside assistance.

Making the Most of Your Self-Driving Tour Experience

To make the most of your self-driving tour experience in Japan, it is important to embrace the freedom and flexibility that comes with it. Take the time to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, interact with locals, and immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of Japan. Be open to trying new foods, visiting lesser-known attractions, and taking detours along the way. Remember to take breaks and rest when needed, as driving long distances can be tiring. Finally, cherish the memories and experiences gained during your self-driving tour in Japan, as they will surely last a lifetime. In conclusion, a self-driving tour in Japan offers a unique and rewarding way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and hidden gems. By understanding the driving regulations, choosing the right car rental company, planning your route and itinerary, navigating Japanese roads and signage, packing essential items, preparing for toll roads and parking, driving in different weather conditions, finding the best places to eat and stay, exploring hidden gems, staying safe on the road, and making the most of your self-driving tour experience, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip. So buckle up, hit the road, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Japan.

self drive tours of japan

Hello travellers, I need some advice please.

I want to visit Shukoku, but I'm a young female solo traveller. Unless I found someone to go with, I wouldn't be able to do a self-drive road trip, so in order to get around the best option is a guided group tour. I'd be looking for upwards of 7 days probably.

Here are the areas that are of great interest to me and In an ideal world, I would like to tick them off my list:

Ochiai village

Takaya shrine

Kankakei gorge and ropeway

Oboke Gorge and Canyon, Koboke gorge, Kazurabashi bridge

Shimanti river

Oku-iya bridge

Ozu and Uchiko historical districts, and Garyu sanso

Iya Valley - Highway, Hinoji Bend/Iya river bend observation point and Peeing boy statue, Vine Bridge

Yoshino river

Niko fuchi - Niyodo blue

Kochi castle

Makino botanical garden

Nakatsu gorge - Niyodo adventure

Takamatsu - Ritsurin park

Kurashiki canal

Monets garden Marmottan

However, my issue is I'm struggling massively to find guided group tours to this area.

My question is: do any of you know of any group tours of this nature?
