Decoding Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’

owen wilson travel movie

By Joseph Berger

  • May 27, 2011

Many a writer or artist has longed to travel back in time to the sizzling Paris of the 1920s, to sip absinthe with Hemingway at Les Deux Magots or dine on choucroute garnie with Picasso at La Rotonde. Imagine the conversation! What has beguiled audiences about the new Woody Allen movie, “Midnight in Paris,” is that the protagonist, Gil, a disenchanted Hollywood screenwriter played by Owen Wilson, gets to live exactly that fantasy.

He runs into Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald at an elegant soiree, where he hears Cole Porter crooning “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love).” He gets writing advice from a laconic Hemingway, persuades Gertrude Stein to read the manuscript of his novel, and falls in love with Picasso’s mistress. He meets Salvador Dalí, T. S. Eliot, Djuna Barnes, Josephine Baker, Luis Buñuel, Man Ray and others in the enormously talented cast of expatriates and bohemians that peopled Jazz Age Paris. Reeling from the folly of World War I and so offering fodder for novels and paintings dripping with disillusionment, Paris was the center of the artistic universe then, and those legends really did converge on Paris around the same time.

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast," Hemingway wrote in “A Moveable Feast,” his memoir that was posthumously published in 1964.

The movie sometimes assumes viewers know the details of these luminous lives, so it may be helpful to understand some of the complicated relationships that made Paris in that era both a dream and often something less.

In 1922 Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, took a two-room flat near the Sorbonne that had no hot water and no indoor toilet. He also rented a room around the corner to write, something like the “attic with a skylight” Gil craves. It had a view of the smokestacks and rooftops that Mr. Allen captures in worshipful shots of the city.

Hemingway also discovered Shakespeare & Company, a bookstore near the Jardin du Luxembourg owned by Sylvia Beach that became a crossroads for Americans in Paris. It’s where he borrowed books by Turgenev and Tolstoy, and it makes a cameo in the film.

Gil meets Hemingway in a run-down cafe not unlike the legendary Dingo, where Hemingway’s less than beautiful friendship with Fitzgerald began with the latter’s drunken near-blackout. Hemingway, who is parodied in the film with dialogue like “no subject is terrible if the story is true and if the prose is clean and honest,” was envious of the seemingly effortless lyricism of Fitzgerald’s writing in works like “The Great Gatsby.” In “Midnight in Paris,” Hemingway tells Fitzgerald that Zelda, a writer herself, sees her husband as a competitor. But “A Moveable Feast” offers a more full-throated account. Hemingway grew to despise Zelda, partly because she had betrayed Fitzgerald with a French aviator and partly because he blamed her decadent tempestuousness for ruining her husband’s productivity.

Picasso and Matisse, who appear in the film, also had a rivalry , barely acknowledged in the film, with the two artists echoing — some critics say swiping — each other’s themes. Both gained the attention of the art collector Leo Stein and his sister, Gertrude. In the film Gil hears that Gertrude Stein has bought a Matisse for 500 francs and, in the hope of making a time-bending killing, asks her if he could pick up “six or seven” Matisses as well. The twice-married Picasso was famous for mistresses, and in the film Marion Cotillard plays Adriana, a capricious, if melancholy stand-in for all of Picasso’s lovers, models and muses. She claims to have been the lover of Modigliani and Braque as well. In actuality, Picasso’s mistresses were relatively constant. Marie-Thérèse Walter, who was 17 when she met Picasso, was with him for eight years, bearing him a daughter, Maya. Dora Maar, whom he met around 1935, was his lover for at least eight years as well.

The Indiana-born Cole Porter maintained an elegant apartment, where he gave hedonistic parties that were daring for their mingling of gay and straight friends. Porter met and married Linda Lee Thomas, a divorcée from Louisville who was eight years older and aware that Porter was gay. They set up an even more lavish apartment — walls covered in zebra hide — near Les Invalides, a home that seems like the setting for the on-screen party where Porter entertains his guests at the piano.

The film recounts how many Porter songs were hommages to Paris —“I Love Paris” and “C’est Magnifique,” among them — and indeed Porter wrote a musical, “Paris,” for the chanteuse Irene Bordoni. One of the show’s songs was “Let’s Do It,” with teasingly suggestive lines including: “In shallow shoals English soles do it./Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it.”

When Gil sits down in a cafe with Dalí and Man Ray, he confides to those artists his shock at being catapulted back in time. Man Ray is delighted with the idea, but Gil tells him that’s because “you’re a Surrealist and I’m a normal guy.”

Dalí, played here by Adrien Brody, first visited Paris in 1926, grew the mustache that would become his trademark, and met his idol and fellow Spaniard, Picasso. Experimenting with many forms, Dalí fell in with a circle of Surrealists in Montparnasse whose members were probing the Freudian depths of their psyches for what they regarded as a new expressive frontier. He met his future wife, Gala, who was inconveniently married to a Surrealist poet.

Dalí collaborated with Buñuel on the short avant-garde film "Un Chien Andalou." In "Midnight in Paris," Gil suggests to Buñuel that he make a film about a dinner party gone haywire. Buñuel, of course, took up the suggestion. The film was "The Exterminating Angel," released in 1962.

An earlier version of this article omitted the final paragraph.

An article on Saturday about figures from the Paris arts scene in the 1920s who appear in the new Woody Allen movie, “Midnight in Paris,” including the filmmaker Luis Buñuel, misidentified a film by Buñuel that the Allen movie’s protagonist urges him to make some day. It is “The Exterminating Angel,” from 1962, not “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,” released in 1972.

This review contains spoilers. Oh, yes, it does, because I can't imagine a way to review "Midnight in Paris" without discussing the delightful fantasy at the heart of Woody Allen 's new comedy. The trailers don't give it away, but now the reviews from Cannes have appeared, and the cat is pretty much out of the bag. If you're still reading, give yourself a fair chance to guess the secret by reading through the list of character names in the credits: "Gert." Which resident of Paris does that make you think of?

This film is sort of a daydream for American lit majors. It opens with a couple on holiday in Paris with her parents. Gil ( Owen Wilson ) and Inez ( Rachel McAdams ) are officially in love, but maybe what Gil really loves is Paris in the springtime. He's a hack screenwriter from Hollywood who still harbors the dream of someday writing a good novel and joining the pantheon of American writers whose ghosts seem to linger in the very air he breathes: Fitzgerald, Hemingway and the other legends of Paris in the 1920s.

He'd like to live in Paris. Inez would like to live in an upper-class American suburb, like her parents. He evokes poetic associations with every cafe where Hemingway might once have had a Pernod, and she likes to go shopping. One night, he wanders off by himself, gets lost, sits on some church steps, and as a bell rings midnight, a big old Peugeot pulls up filled with revelers.

They invite him to join their party. They include Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Allen makes no attempt to explain this magic. None is needed. Nor do we have to decide if what happens is real or imaginary. It doesn't matter. Gil is swept along in their wake and finds himself plunged into the Jazz Age and all its legends. His novel was going to be about a man who ran a nostalgia shop, and here he is in the time and place he's most nostalgic for.

Some audience members might be especially charmed by "Midnight in Paris." They would be those familiar with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, and the artists who frequented Stein's famous salon: Picasso, Dali, Cole Porter , Man Ray, Luis Bunuel and, yes, "Tom Eliot." Allen assumes some familiarity with their generation, and some moviegoers will be mystified, because cultural literacy is not often required at the movies anymore. Others will be as charmed as I was. Zelda is playfully daffy, Scott is in love with her and doomed by his love, and Hemingway speaks always in formal sentences of great masculine portent.

Woody Allen must have had a great time writing this screenplay. Gil is of course the Woody character (there's almost always one in an Allen film), and his fantasy is an enchanted wish-fulfillment. My favorite of all the movie's time-lapse conversations may be the one Gil has with Bunuel. He gives him an idea for a film: A group of guests sit down to dinner and after the meal is over, they mysteriously find themselves unable to leave the house. "But why not?" Bunuel asks. "They just can't," Gil explains. Bunuel says it doesn't make any sense to him. If the story idea and perhaps the name Bunuel don't ring a bell, that's a scene that won't connect with you, but Allen seems aware that he's flirting with inside baseball, and tries to make the movie charming even for someone who was texting all during high school.

Owen Wilson is a key to the movie's appeal. He makes Gil so sincere, so enthusiastic, about his hero worship of the giants of the 1920s. He can't believe he's meeting these people, and they are so nice to him — although at the time, of course, they didn't yet think of themselves as legends; they ran into ambitious young writers like Gil night after night in Miss Stein's salon.

Another treasure in the film is Kathy Bates' performance. She is much as I would imagine Gertrude Stein: an American, practical, no-nonsense, possessed with a nose for talent, kind, patient. She's something like the Stein evoked by Hemingway in A Moveable Feast, his memoir of this period. She embodies the authority that made her an icon.

Then there's Adriana ( Marion Cotillard ), who has already been the mistress of Braque and Modigliani, and is now Picasso's lover, and may soon — be still, my heart! — fall in love with Gil. Compared to her previous lovers, he embodies a winsome humility, as well he might. Meanwhile, life in the present continues, with Gil's bride-to-be and future in-laws increasingly annoyed by his disappearances every night. And there's another story involving a journey even further into the past, indicating that nostalgia can change its ingredients at a movable feast.

This is Woody Allen's 41st film. He writes his films himself, and directs them with wit and grace. I consider him a treasure of the cinema. Some people take him for granted, although "Midnight in Paris" reportedly charmed even the jaded veterans of the Cannes press screenings. There is nothing to dislike about it. Either you connect with it or not. I'm wearying of movies that are for "everybody" — which means, nobody in particular. "Midnight in Paris" is for me, in particular, and that's just fine with moi.

A 'Paris' Review: Woody Allen, In Fine Form

Woody Allen isn't religious, but he has a rabbinical side, and over the past decade his films have become more and more like Talmudic parables for atheists. On the surface, these movies are streamlined, even breezy, and they often have voice-over narration to get the pesky exposition out of the way fast. Philosophically, Allen has settled on resignation, a cosmic shrug: There's no God, no justice, people are inconstant, life is meaningless — so where do you wanna eat?

'He's a Pseudo-Intellectual'

'I'm Not A Big Francophile'

I have a problem, though, buying into the worldview of someone whose world is a closed ecosystem. There's no evidence that Allen lets any contemporary culture penetrate his hard, defensive shell. Music stopped in the '40s, if not earlier, ditto literature, ditto film — with a pass for select European directors. He seems locked in a daydream of the past.

The good news is that Allen has made the lure of nostalgia the theme of his supernatural comedy Midnight in Paris , which might be why this is his best, most emotionally pure film in over a decade. It's a romantic fantasy that's also a sly act of self-criticism.

The time-traveling hero, Gil, played by Owen Wilson, is a successful Hollywood screenwriter on holiday in Paris with his brisk, upwardly mobile fiancee, Inez, played by Rachel McAdams. Gil considers himself a hack and, to Inez's horror, wants to write novels instead of movies. How he wishes he could be a writer in Paris — better yet, Paris in the '20s, alongside Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and all those other giants living high yet creating enduring works of art.

You can almost hear the familiar Woody Allen cadences in the film, yet Owen Wilson isn't the usual East Coast intellectual Allen hero, and he makes the lines his own. Apart from Mia Farrow in The Purple Rose of Cairo , this is the finest lead performance in an Allen film that wasn't by Allen — and finer than many of Allen's, too. You sense the vein of wistfulness under his stoner cool, the longing for definition behind his spaciness. It's a thrilling moment when he sits forlornly on some steps in the rain at midnight, a vintage automobile rumbles by, the champagne-swilling occupants invite him in, and he's suddenly back in the '20s.

Owen Wilson, playing the time-traveling hero Gil, wants to write novels instead of movies, much to the horror of his fiancee Inez, played by Rachel McAdams.

How? No explanation. Allen just breezes past all that, the way he did in Purple Rose and, before that, in his great 1970s short story, "The Kugelmass Episode," happily eliminating the sci-fi wheels and pulleys that tend to suck up so much screen time. Gil is just there — counseling Scott about Zelda, drinking with Hemingway, showing parts of his novel to Gertrude Stein, and falling in love with a woman named Adriana, played by a stunningly beautiful Marion Cotillard. Adriana bonds with Gil over his love of the past — except the past she loves is the 1890s and not her vulgar present. His '20s ideal woman hates the '20s — a bitter irony.

Allen doesn't do anything interesting with Scott and Zelda — my guess is he's too in awe of them. But his Hemingway, played with forthright manly-manliness by Corey Stoll, is a riot; and as Gertrude Stein, Kathy Bates proves that in an absurd context, playing it straight can make you funnier than a thousand clowns.

Midnight in Paris is a doodle, but it's easy and graceful, and its ambivalent view of nostalgia has all kinds of resonance. As I watched, I felt a different sort of nostalgia: not for the Parisian '20s but for the days in which Allen regularly turned out freewheeling, pitch-perfect tall tales in print and onscreen. The movie is so good it takes you back to those days, which were the days, my friend.

Where Was No Escape Filmed?

of Where Was No Escape Filmed?

Directed by John Erick Dowdle, ‘No Escape’ is an action thriller film that stars Pierce Brosnan , Owen Wilson , and Lake Bell. The movie revolves around Jack Dwyer and his family, who move to Southeast Asia for a lucrative career opportunity. However, upon their arrival, they realize that something is not right as the internet, television, and telephones do not work. But when Jack reads a newspaper, he discovers that a revolution is brewing in the country and rebels are killing foreigners.

The only hope of survival for the Dwyers is to reach the American Embassy, but it won’t be an easy task with rebels everywhere. The action-packed scenes in the film might have you intrigued about its filming location. Here’s everything we know about the filming locations of ‘No Escape.’

No Escape Filming Locations

‘No Escape’ was filmed entirely in Southeast Asia. The countries in this region are famous for their picturesque tropical beaches, beautiful and historic Buddha temples, and ancient ruins. With the curiosity to know more about the production of ‘No Escape,’ we gathered more information about the specific filming locations. Let’s have a look at them.

Thailand was the primary filming location for ‘No Escape’. Located in the mountainous ranges in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a historic city that has been a religious and cultural center for the country for centuries. Most of the scenes of the fictional Asian city that Jack visits with his family were filmed in Chiang Mai. Filming for the scenes in which Jack gets stuck with his family at a hotel took place at The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel located in Chiang Mai.

owen wilson travel movie

The film industry of the country contributes a significant amount to its GDP. As the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia, Thailand has a notable contribution to the global entertainment industry. Interestingly, not all scenes were shot in the historic town. Lampang, another historic city, is an important filming location as well. While shooting in Lampang under the working title ‘The Coup,’ Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan escaped a real fire that broke out in a three-story shophouse that was rented by the production team.

owen wilson travel movie

The shooting in Thailand was not as straightforward, as the entire team had to assure that they would respect the culture and not defame the country in any way. Due to the volatile political environment, actor Owen Wilson almost got himself arrested because he took a picture with fans in which he was wearing a blue, white, and red whistle. He was unaware that the colors of the whistle made him seem like a supporter of the anti-government protestors.

Apart from Thailand, Cambodia is the other shooting location for ‘No Escape’. The Southeast Asian country is well-known for its majestic mountains, beautiful coastlines, and low-lying plains. Interestingly, Cambodia has also served as a filming site for movies like ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ and ‘City of Ghosts.’

40 Best Owen Wilson Movies From His Decades-Long Career

From comedy classics and romcoms to animated hits and war dramas, he's pretty much run the gamut.

Headshot of Janaya Wecker

Born in Dallas, Texas, the actor never planned on venturing into show business. But after meeting future filmmaker Wes Anderson at the University of Texas at Austin, everything changed. The two collaborated on Bottle Rocket in 1996—Wilson's big on-screen debut—and went on to attend the Sundance Film Festival together. From there, the star-to-be moved to Hollywood with his two brothers, Luke Wilson and Andrew Wilson, and continued to work with Anderson. Less than a decade later, the friends earned their very first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay with The Royal Tenenbaums .

Now, with over 80 acting credits , six producing credits, and four writing credits to his name, Wilson has become a force to be reckoned with in the industry. Take a look at 40 of his best movies throughout his decades-long career, as well as behind-the-scenes facts about his experiences.

Paint (2023)

In one of his most recent roles, Wilson plays an artist with his own television program, à la Bob Ross. Although his role (and hair and wardrobe) was inspired by the real late painter, the plot—including his rivalry with an up-and-coming artist—is entirely fictional .

Wedding Crashers (2005)

wedding crashers

Many fans know Wilson from this classic comedy about buddies who sneak into weddings in the hopes of making romantic connections. Much of the film—including the "Lock it up!" scene and the line "I think we only use ten percent of our hearts"— was improvised by the actor.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

royal tenenbaums

Wilson co-wrote and starred in this film about a dysfunctional family reuniting after years of chaos—and it earned him an Academy Award nomination. He turned down a role in Ocean's Eleven for this film—and so did Danny Glover and Owen's brother, Luke Wilson. WATCH NOW

The Internship (2013)

the internship

Wilson and Vaughn reunited for this comedy about salesmen landing internships at Google—and learning that competing with tech-savvy youngsters for a job isn't as easy as they thought. The actors starred alongside 100 extras who were real-life Google employees at the time.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

fantastic mr fox

Wes Anderson cast his longtime friend as Coach Skip in this animated tale of foxes versus farmers. Wilson, along with his costars George Clooney and Meryl Streep, recorded their parts outside a traditional studio: They went into a stable in a forest to increase the "spontaneity," Anderson once explained .

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

grand budapest hotel

In yet another hit film by Wes Anderson, Wilson plays a concierge-turned-secret-society-member helping to solve a mysterious murder. He bonded with costar Adrien Brody on set, so much so that after claiming he never bowled before, Wilson asked the fellow actor to go bowling one night—and beat him in a game that decided who would pay for their drinks.

Wonder (2017)

wonder

Playing the father of a boy born with Treacher Collins syndrome, Wilson's performance in this film was especially emotional. "When he came on set as Auggie after going through makeup, he became Auggie. It was easy to love and feel protective toward this brave, little dignified person," he told TODAY of costar Jacob Tremblay.

Meet the Parents (2000)

meet the parents

Though Kevin Rawley was a supporting role in this beloved comedy, Wilson made the part entirely his own. In fact, he managed to improvise most of his lines as the wealthy ex-fiancé of Teri Polo's character, Pam.

Meet the Fockers (2004)

meet the fockers

Wilson reprised his role in the much-anticipated sequel, which shows the families of a couple meeting for the very first time. Not surprisingly, he had a great time filming all of the Fockers films . "Ben [Stiller] and I have worked together so much that anytime we're in a scene, we were always kind of laughing and stuff together," he once told CinemaBlend .

Little Fockers (2010)

little fockers

In the final movie of the Fockers trilogy, Wilson shared an intimate scene with Barbra Streisand that had audiences cracking up. "To be able to say you kissed Barbra Streisand, that's pretty major. That's one you can check off the to-do list," he joked to CinemaBlend .

Cars (2006)

cars

In an animated classic that defined the childhoods of many, Wilson voices Lightning McQueen, a car making his way to a big race. In a rare move for Pixar, a company that usually promotes its projects without drawing attention to the voices behind its characters, most of the film's marketing was centered around Wilson .

Cars 2 (2011)

cars 2

Wilson reprised his iconic role after the first was a hit, this time taking Lightning McQueen to the World Grand Prix. The film earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Film—the very first Pixar movie to ever be nominated in the category.

Cars 3 (2017)

cars 3

Feeling pushed out of the sport by a new generation of race cars, Lightning McQueen sets out to prove he still has what it takes to be a champion. Wilson was able to tap into his animated character's emotions, thanks to NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, who served as a consultant on the film.

Zoolander (2001)

zoolander

Stiller and Wilson costarred together again in this hit comedy about male models turned secret agents. Fun fact: Wilson's memorable long blonde hair in the movie was a wig because he was filming Behind Enemy Lines at the time and had to keep his real hair short .

Zoolander 2 (2016)

zoolander 2

A whopping 15 years later, audiences were thrilled when the stars reunited for the sequel. To announce the film, Wilson and Stiller dressed up as their characters and hit the Paris runway . Wilson didn't expect such a positive reaction, telling Collider , "When we first announced the movie at the Paris fashion show, we didn’t know what the reaction would be, but it seemed to be like a rock concert."

Marley & Me (2008)

marley and me

In this rom-com, Wilson and Jennifer Aniston play newlyweds whose lives change forever after adopting a troublemaking puppy. In addition to working with 22 different dogs throughout the film, he also got to perform alongside his real-life parents, who played his character's parents.

Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

behind enemy lines

Wilson's career took a dramatic turn with this intense film about a pilot being shot down over war-torn Bosnia. To prepare for the role, the actor rode in a jet at supersonic speeds. Though he separated his shoulder during a stunt, he was back filming more physical scenes the next day.

No Escape (2015)

no escape

In another role that strayed from Wilson's usual lighthearted comedies, he portrays a father who finds himself and his family caught in the middle of an international coup. He later told Collider : "I guess the thing that attracted me to the script was that it didn't feel too action-y. It felt grounded in believability."

She's Funny That Way (2014)

shes funny that way

In this comedy, the actor took on the role of a playwright whose life goes awry when his project leads to an unexpected love triangle. Director Peter Bogdanovich originally put the film on hold after his first choice for the lead, John Ritter, passed away. After Wes Anderson introduced Bogdanovich to Wilson years later, he decided to bring it back.

Starsky & Hutch (2004)

starsky and hutch

This buddy cop comedy follows Stiller and Wilson's characters as they catch criminals in their red and white Ford Gran Torino. When Wilson's character sings "Don't Give Up on Us Baby," the voice was actually that of David Soul , who played the original Ken Hutchinson in the 1975 television series.

Horizon: An American Saga's Abbey Lee & Jamie Campbell Bower Tease Ties To Kevin Costner's Gunslinger

Jerry bruckheimer & mark molloy reveal how beverly hills cop: axel f got made and tease fifth installment, horizon: an american saga's sienna miller & sam worthington discuss chapter 1 of kevin costner's western epic.

Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston aren't strangers to time travel stories: they both starred in 2011's Midnight in Paris . But the Woody Allen movie is a world away from what Marvel's Loki delivers. Hiddleston's eponymous trickster (spun out of the timeline from The Avengers ) has been arrested by the Time Variance Authority and put to work hunting down another variant of himself by Wilson's hardened Agent Mobius. The role is a stark departure for Wilson, but is nevertheless one that he shines in.

Screen Rant caught up with the actor ahead of the  Loki premiere to discuss joining the MCU, bringing Mobius to life, and his take on the show's deeper meaning.

Let's go back to the start on your involvement with this project. Were you at all familiar with the MCU, Loki and Endgame in particular, before you took this role?

No, I wasn't that familiar. It was really right before we started filming when I met with Tom Hiddleston, and he walked me through a lot of the mythology and explaining Loki's full story.

That's quite funny to me, because in the show you have a lot of expositional dialogue, and you have to explain an awful lot of what the TVA is and the world that Loki is in. Was that challenge, trying to get your head around all the things you're saying when it was all incredibly fresh to you?

Even the stuff that Tom [told me] - we sort of joke about it being called the Loki lectures. Those were a crucial couple days that we spent, because the stuff that he said about Loki would actually work its way into some of those scenes that we had together. Because I am supposed to be an expert on Loki. But with the whole TVA, it's always a little bit of a dance to try to make it sound not so much like exposition.

I'd like to get an idea of that, because they are gripping scenes even when you're just in a cafeteria discussing things. How do you make dialogue scenes with Tom Hiddleston so exciting? Obviously, you're working with Tom Hiddleston, which definitely helps.

Yeah, that helps. But I think that, we didn't quite know, because they were long scenes that we filmed over the course of more than a few days. So, there is a little bit of, "Oh, is this gonna be compelling for people, just to watch two people sitting across from each other talking?" But I think that the script is pretty good. And then being able to sort of show him the stuff that I'm saying about his life, hopefully will make it gripping.

Mobius is a very interesting character, as a detective who's taking Loki under his wing. How did you build that performance, because in the comics, he's a very different sort of character. Where did you look to for inspiration?

Kate, the director, had an idea to maybe have a mustache. And then we landed on the hair being the way it was in, and then just the wardrobe and the sets. The sets, I felt like, were some of the coolest sets that I've ever been on. Just visually feeling that sort of Orwellian weight behind the TVA helped to kind of get into character.

It's amazing how much of the set is real and tangible. How did that impact your experience? Because when you're doing a Marvel project, you think green screen and high scale. But this sounds like a much more traditional and much more exciting way.

Yeah. I mean, there was greenscreen and stuff sometimes. But those sets for the TVA, even sometimes when I wasn't working, I would come by just to take a look because they were very interesting. It had that sort of futuristic but also kind of retro [feeling] that I think Kate wanted the whole look of the show to have.

You've obviously worked with Tom before, so you've got a bit of creative history. What was it like picking up and building that dynamic? Because the relationship between you two is absolutely fascinating in the show.

I think that's always a little bit... You never know how it's gonna go, working with another actor. Tom and I, even with such different backgrounds, somehow we're on the same page with how we felt the scene should go. And also just very open to if he had an idea or if we wanted to try something, and Kate encouraged us. I don't know, it came pretty naturally.

Have you been following the release of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , and the hype behind them? Has that been interesting, knowing that you've got Loki coming soon?

Yeah, it seemed like both of those were huge. They got so much attention and interest.  I kind of noticed that early on when we were filming this, just because of all the secrecy around the stories and the wardrobe and the characters' looks and stuff. I hadn't worked on something where they were so protective, but then I began to appreciate how committed Marvel is to trying to surprise people. And it's hard, because people are out there trying to - they're very excited, and so they want to see what's going on.

Secrecy is something that's baked into Marvel and all this genre stuff, and it can be a challenge. Were there any points where you found it very hard to keep the secrets? Did you have any friends or family who were wanting to find that stuff out?

Yeah, I did. And sometimes, just with the wardrobe, I'm just wearing this TVA uniform. Are we really trying to hide that? But that's what we were trying to do. I did become aware of trying not to give anything away - and there's a lot to give away in this, so you have to be careful.

You haven’t really embraced the superhero role before, so it's quite exciting. Would you be tempted to go back and do another superhero project in the future?

Yeah, I did enjoy being a part of this whole world. Who doesn't want to participate in one of these MCU [films]? Because there's - just what we're talking about - such a passionate fan base?

Yeah, I'm sure you're gonna get it in the next few weeks. If you could give, without any spoilers, a feel of what you personally took from this project and what you find the most exciting about it?

Kate, the director, has talked about that: that sort of gray area that you're never quite sure if somebody is good or bad. We have that in real life, where things are sort of more complicated. And the idea of free will. Sometimes I feel like I have a lot of free will, and sometimes it feels like it was written 1000 years ago. I think that the show kind of explore some of those interesting existential themes.
