10 Best Distilleries In Louisville KY You Must Visit

September 2, 2022 //  by  Southern Trippers

Are you ready to explore some of the best distilleries in Louisville, Kentucky? While The Kentucky Bourbon Trail and bourbon distilleries are most popular in The Bluegrass State, you can find a variety of distilleries to visit and enjoy during your visit.

From bourbon and whiskey to gin and absinthe, you can find all of your favorite drinks in Louisville. After horses and racing, distilled spirits are the most known commodity in KY. Distilling has been a part of Kentucky history even before it became a state, and as such, distilling is still considered an important part of Kentucky culture.

In 1964, Congress recognized bourbon as a distinct and original American product. Trying some Kentucky Proud bourbon while you’re in Louisville is a must! Also known as the Gateway to the South, Louisville, is one of the best places to visit in Kentucky, and adding distilleries to your list of things to do in Louisville is a must for your bucket list!

This Kentucky distillery has received amazing reviews from everyone from Whiskey Advocate to Spirit Journal and Wine Enthusiast. Angel’s Envy is easily one of the best bourbon distilleries in Kentucky so be sure to add it to your ultimate bucket list for The Bluegrass State!

Rabbit Hole

Rabbit Hole is a craft bourbon maker that offers guest tastings and guided tours. When considering which of the bourbon distilleries in Louisville to visit, don’t overlook Rabbit Hole Distillery. The iconic rabbit on the side of the building lets you know that you have arrived. Each drink at Rabbit Hole comes with a story. Whether it’s Kentucky straight 4-grain bourbon, high rye, bespoke gin, or French wheat vodka filtered through Kentucky Limestone, every drink has a story at Rabbit Hole. Taking a tour and tasting each one for yourself is the best way to learn those stories. This distillery proudly refers to itself as the architectural icon on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The building and distillery truly are stunning. They are located in the Nulu district, and they are open Tuesday through Saturday. You can enjoy tours at super reasonable prices, and they even allow children to tag along, which is amazing for family travelers.

Louisville distilleries are usually focused on bourbon. However, at Holi Gin, you can get a taste of something a bit different. Located away from downtown Louisville, this distillery can be found near the iconic Witches’ Tree near Historic Old Louisville. Holi Gin is one of the best distilleries in Louisville and is the perfect place to experience something other than a bourbon tasting while you’re in the city. Designed and inspired by the Holi Festival of Color, Holi Gin is made with Indian inspiration. When you take a tour of the distillery, you can see how the gin is made, learn about different types of gin, and then spend the last thirty minutes of the tour learning how to make cocktails. The tour includes two amazing gin cocktails! After your visit, you will be able to find many attractions and restaurants nearby. The Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, St. James Court Fountain, and the Speed Art Museum are all just a few minutes away from Holi. Don’t miss some of the best restaurants in Louisville while you’re in the area as well.

Old Forester Distilling Co.

Old Forester has incredible Louisville whiskey. Rye whiskey, 86 proof, prohibition style, mint julep, presidents choice, 100 proof, statesman bourbon, and more are all available at Old Forester. Like most distilleries in Louisville, you can take a tour of this one as well. On a tour, they will take you on a journey through the past. You will learn about the beginning of the historic Whiskey Row and how Old Forester has its beginning there. Other than tours, tastings, and amazing whiskey, you can also find quite a bit of merchandise there. From decanters and mixing spoons to bourbon-scented candles and soaps, you can find it all at Old Forester Distilling Co. Visiting distilleries while you are in the Gateway to The South is something that you will be talking about for years to come. You can really make the most of your time spent in the city by visiting the distilleries. A visit to Old Forester Distilling Co. will make your travels all the more special!

Copper and Kings

Distilleries in Louisville are simply remarkable. When you visit Cooper and Kings, you will see that it is more than just a distillery. Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co is one of the best distilleries in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville whisky tours are widely available in The Gateway to The South. The best tours happen at Kentucky Peerless! They have been making whiskey since the 1880s, and you can tour the urban warehouse distillery for yourself to see the history and process of making some of the greatest bourbon and rye in the state! The first whiskey at Peerless was put into the barrels in 1889. The craftsmanship has continued to develop since then, leading the distillery to produce some of the most remarkable whiskey in not only Louisville but the country. When you visit this distillery, you will feel as though you are becoming part of their family as tour guides proudly show you behind the scenes of the creation process. As such a historic distillery in Louisville, you will find that a visit to this distillery is extra special. During the prohibition in Kentucky, the Peerless warehouse distillery was one of the storage locations for whiskey, and it was also one of the dew places that could offer whiskey for medicinal use by prescription.

Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery

MItcher’s Fort Nelson Distillery is a must on Louisville bourbon distillery tours. Louisville Kentucky bourbon is simply fantastic at Mitcher’s Fort Nelson. You can take tours and sit for tastings at this later 1800s facility that is famous for its bourbon and rye. Enjoy an in-house cocktail bar and more during your visit. This is a super nostalgic distillery, and as such, you can see homages to the past in every aspect of Mitcher’s. The historical legacy traces back to 1753 at the founding of America’s first whiskey company. You will find their 1 star, limited production, and their limited release lines at the distillery. Twenty-five-year Kentucky straight rye and Twenty-five-year Kentucky straight bourbon are available as well! The process of creating these amazing drinks is so important at Micther’s. They believe the cost is nothing when it comes to having everything they need to create a spectacular drink. It is by far one of the best distilleries in Louisville! When you visit the Fort Nelson location, you will be in a great location to see many of the best things to do in Louisville. Right across the street from the distillery is the Louisville Slugger Museum and Bat Factory. Then, within walking distance, you will find the Frazier History Museum, which has actually been designated as the welcome center for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Prohibition Craft Spirits

Located in the Nulu district, Prohibition Craft Spirits is among the best places for a bourbon tasting in Louisville. You can take guided distillery tours and cocktail classes, or you can enjoy a fabulous tasting while you are visiting Prohibition Craft Spirits. In fact, the tastings and cocktail classes are what make it one of the best distilleries in Louisville. The cocktail classes are led by one of the distilleries’ mixologists. You will be able to expand your cocktail knowledge by using their amazing premium spirits and detailed instructions from an expert to guide you as you learn how to make new cocktails. The classes are an hour and a half long and allow you to make three cocktails from what you learned in the lesson. Meticulous attention is paid to the way that the spirits are crafted at Prohibition Craft Spirits. They are made in small batches of only fifty-three gallons, which allows for the desired flavors to be brought out and for strict changes to be made as necessary. One of their most popular drinks is the NULU single barrel: barrel proof bourbon. Check it out while you’re there!

Bulleit Distillery Co.

Bulleit Distillery Co. is located in Shelbyville, Kentucky, which is less than an hour from Louisville. When it comes to bourbon distilleries near Louisville, you won’t want to pass up Bulleit. Proudly proclaiming to be the modern frontier of whiskey, Bulleit was founded in 1987 and is currently among the fastest-growing whiskeys in the country. The tasting experiences vary from the anatomy of a single barrel to unlocking the senses. Whichever tasting you choose to participate in, you are sure to leave with a deeper lover and understanding of distilling in Kentucky. Another part of what makes Bulleit Distilling Co one of the best distillers in Louisville, KY, is that they hold super fun and informative classes for guests. You will find everything from creative cocktailing classes and greenhouse cocktail classes to candle making with maddox and rose classes. First time going to Kentucky and KBB provided us one of the better trips my family and I had in a while. The first call with Tyler to set up the weekend was smooth and effortless with a peace of mind. Throughout the weeks to the final day prior to this past weekend, I would call with a few questions and every person I spoke to felt like it was the owner. Extremely patient and knowledgeable with outstanding customer service. Our driver Ethan really took our initial experience and elevated it into two fantastic days. We went to four roses, Buffalo, Woodford, whiskey thief, willet, makers, and bardstown. Besides the tours and tastings being outstanding, seeing other KBB tours having the same experience as us was reassuring that we found the right company. I really appreciate KBB and the experience they provided. If you’re looking to go to Kentucky, do it right, Book KBB.

Kentucky Bourbon Boys would get six stars if I could rate them that high!! We’re already planning our trip back to Louisville & can’t wait to use them again.  They were super helpful in the planning process and truly made our trip amazing. Our driver Rusty was so knowledgeable & went above and beyond for our group. We visited Limestone Distillery, Maker’s Mark and Bardstown.  We had lunch at the Cozy Corner which our group thoroughly enjoyed. The tour was all inclusive and I literally cannot say better things about this tour service!!!

Rachelle J.

We used KBB for a bachelor party. First booking was very smooth and the coordination team was very prompt with communication about the tour. You also get more flexibility to pick distilleries that you want to visit vs just a set itinerary. They also pick you up from where you are staying so it is incredibly convenient. Larry W. was our tour guide and he was so kind, took pictures for us throughout the day, and shared fun facts and bourbon history on top of the tours we were able to take.

I can not stress enough how great of an experience we had and would 100% use them again for future bourbon country tours.

Katheryn K.

Had a great day with KBB on a custom tour. Have been on other bourbon tours, and it was so great to be able to customize our experience, Friendly, reliable, accommodating. Larry D was our driver and made it a wonderful day for us!

Great communication from start to finish. Our Driver Bobby was a great guy, very informative and helpful.

Our guide Justin was on time / professional / fun to be around. Everything was on schedule – he gave great recommendations on other things to do while we were in Lexington.

Can't get into a Kentucky bourbon distillery tour? Here are 9 other bourbon-themed things to do

The bourbon boom has Kentucky bustling with distillery experiences and tour opportunities.

And yet, sometimes, even with more than 40 distilleries scattering the commonwealth, finding an available bourbon tour can be tricky.

Many major distilleries with international brand recognition recommend booking experiences and tours more than a month in advance. With that kind of demand, taking a last-minute trip through bourbon country can leave some visitors feeling like the bottle has run dry.

But never fear Kentuckians! If your out-of-state in-laws or college roommate is passing through town with little notice, you can still give them a full taste of the bourbon experience ― in some cases, even without reservations.

Ahead of the summer traveling months, The Courier Journal checked in with tourism agencies throughout the commonwealth to learn the best way to give out-of-towners a sample of bourbon culture that will leave them craving to come back.

Can’t find an open spot on a traditional distillery tour? Or want to diversify your bourbon trip? Here are nine other fun, informative ways to experience Kentucky’s favorite spirit.

Learn about bourbon on a Kentucky River Tour

404 Wilkinson Blvd., Frankfort, 502-395-1917, kyrivertours.com

Kentucky River Tours offers a variety of bourbon-related tours hosted among one of the elements that make Kentucky so ideal for distilling — its water.  On these tours, you’ll learn the history of how the river shaped Kentucky’s bourbon industry. Some of the experiences also include bourbon tastings. The River Tour and Taste is recommended for bourbon novices, and the Boats and Bourbon Tour features single-barrel picks for true aficionados.

Tour prices vary based on experience, but generally range from $19-$90. Reservations are required.

Schedule a Whiskey Row Walking Tour in downtown Louisville

The tour begins at the Frazier History Museum, 829 W. Main St., 855-769-9255, whiskeyrowwalkingtour.com

The two-hour tour on downtown Louisville’s historic Whiskey Row allows guests to learn about the history, distilling, and craftsmanship behind Kentucky’s favorite spirit. The Bourbon and Chocolate Tour includes three stops and tastings that focus on pairing bourbon with chocolate. At Art Eatables candy shop, visitors will learn how chocolate can draw different flavors out of bourbon. Next up is Buzzard’s Roost Distillery , which opened in 2023 and is one of the newer attractions on Whiskey Row. The tour ends at locally owned Bristol Bar and Grille where guests will sample Old Forester bourbon alongside one of Kentucky’s signature chocolate and pecan pies. The company also offers a two-hour walking tour that includes whiskey samples stops at a variety of distilleries on West Main Street.

The tour cost $89. Reservations are highly recommended. Walk-ups are welcome, if the tour is not sold out.

Explore the grounds and enjoy a cocktail at Castle & Key

4445 McCracken Pike, Frankfort, castleandkey.com

Even if you can’t book a tour at Castle & Key , you can still have a breathtaking experience on the grounds at this historic distillery. The modern Castle & Key distillery operates at the site of the Old Taylor Distillery. Originally constructed in 1887, this distillery features “unified grandiose European architecture with the most modern production techniques of the era,” and yes, it quite literally looks like a castle. A small bar operates outside in the gardens, and guests without reservations are invited to purchase cocktails and wander the outdoor gardens.

Take a walk-in bourbon tour at Whiskey Thief Distilling Company

283 Crab Orchard Road, Frankfort, 502-552-1001 , whiskeythief.com

On weekends, Whiskey Thief Distilling Company offers food and cocktails, and guests are invited to enjoy its back patio and lawn. As the name suggests, this distillery allows guests to use a whiskey thief to bottle their own bourbon from the barrel. This distillery is an anomaly in bourbon country that still offers walk-in tours, which makes it a great option for last-minute guests. Even so, the staff strongly encourages guests to call ahead to ensure convenience.

The Whiskey Thief Uncut and Unfiltered Tour costs $35.

Check out a bourbon bar, bourbon library or speakeasy

You don’t necessarily need a tour guide to learn about bourbon. Sometimes the best way to get a quick, hearty education on Kentucky’s favorite spirit is to bend the ear of the bartender pouring it. House of Commons: A Bourbon Library , 245 W. Main St. in Frankfort, offers “once-in-a-lifetime pours as well as old favorites” and strives “to represent every Kentucky bourbon distillery.”

Neat Bourbon Bar and Bottle Shop , 1139 Bardstown Road in Louisville, has a strong collection of vintage bourbons dating back decades. The Lobby Bar and Grille , 335 W. Broadway in Louisville, also has a strong bourbon list that can be enjoyed in the iconic, historic Brown Hotel.

Hell or High Water (which strongly encourages reservations) at 112 W. Washington St. in Louisville also has an extensive bourbon menu and offers visitors a unique speakeasy experience.

Visit a Kentucky bourbon distillery bar

Even if you can't book a tour at your favorite bourbon company, you might still be able to enjoy a drink there. Several distilleries have cocktail and tasting bars that don't require reservations, such as Copper and Kings , 1121 E. Washington St. in Louisville, Bardstown Bourbon Company , 1500 Parkway Dr. in Bardstown, or its tasting room location at 730 W. Main St. in Louisville, Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , 528 W. Main St. in Louisville, Jeptha Creed , 500 Gordon Lane in Shelbyville, the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience , 1311 Gilkey Run Road in Bardstown, Woodford Reserve , 7785 McCracken Pike in Versailles and Maker's Mark , 3350 Burks Spring Road in Loretto.

Visit the Distillery District in Lexington

1170 Manchester St. Lexington, lexingtondistillerydistrict.com

The Distillery District in Lexington is a modern entertainment district in a historic space with restaurants, retail, and three craft distilleries. This 25-acre property was originally the historic James E. Pepper Distillery, which began making bourbon in 1879. The site fell into disrepair in the late 1950s and was abandoned for nearly 50 years. Barrel House Distillery , James E. Pepper Distillery , and RD1 Spirits offer a variety of tour and tasting opportunities for guests, and some of these experiences are available without an appointment.

Got a sweet tooth? Crank and Boom Craft Ice Cream has a bourbon ball sundae on its menu, too.

Visit the Oscar Getz Museum of Bourbon History

114 N. Fifth St., Bardstown, oscargetzwhiskeymuseum.com

The Oscar Getz Museum of Bourbon History in Bardstown is free to the public (donations are encouraged) and does not require a reservation. The museum features a 50-year collection of rare artifacts and documents that trace the whiskey industry from pre-colonial days to post-Prohibition years. The museum home to authentic moonshine stills, antique bottles and jugs, medicinal whiskey bottles, unique advertising art, and novelty whiskey containers, among other artifacts.

While you're in Bardstown, be sure to swing over to the Old Talbott Tavern , 107 W. Stephen Foster Ave., which dates back to 1779 and is believed to be the oldest bourbon bar in the world.

Visit the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center at the Frazier History Museum

Frazier History Museum, 829 W. Main St ., Louisville , fraziermuseum.org

The Frazier History Museum also operates as the starting point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail . The gift shop on the first floor features a large assortment of bourbon souvenirs, and the third floor has exhibits dedicated to the history of bourbon. The Frazier also offers a small assortment of bourbon tastings and cocktail classes where you can learn to make a proper old fashioned or a mint julep, and these can be booked ahead of time on the museum's website.

7 tips for visiting bourbon distilleries and traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

louisville ky distillery tour

So you’ve caught the bourbon itch, and you’re eager to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail .

Cool — but so have hundreds of thousands of other people, too.

The Kentucky Distillers Association reported 2.55 million visits to Kentucky’s distilleries in 2023, and visitors came from 48 states, 20 countries, and six continents. Kentucky bourbon’s popularity has boomed over the past decade, and craft distilling and the tourism industry has blossomed alongside it. The demand means walk-in tours and tastings aren’t always available and reservations for lodging, experiences, and dining are often encouraged.

If you plan to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , come prepared.

Ahead of the summer travel season, The Courier Journal reached out to tourism officials in Louisville, Bardstown and Frankfort to distill down just how far in advance you should hammer down your plans.

Ready to hit the trail? Here's what to know about planning a Kentucky bourbon adventure.

Is there a time of year when Kentucky Bourbon Trail is less busy?

The end of winter, generally, tends to be the least busy time to visit Kentucky, but in recent years, many distilleries have seen an uptick around the winter holiday season and even in January, February and early March.

When should you book a tour at a Kentucky bourbon distillery?

Tourism officials recommend booking tours at least a month in advance, but this largely depends on the distillery you want to go to. Distilleries individually release calendars for booking dates, some distilleries, like the ever-popular Buffalo Trace Distillery (which is not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail), opens bookings two months in advance and offer a waitlist. Other distilleries have calendars that extend out three months or more in advance.

Officials suggest researching the distilleries you know you want to visit first, figuring out when those calendars will be released, and booking those must-see experiences as soon as possible. Set calendar reminders in your phone, so that you can circle back when the time comes.

When should I book a hotel or Airbnb for a trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

If you're planning a trip for a weekend in April, early May, September, or October book ahead as much as possible. In most cases, you can find accommodations in Frankfort with about two weeks' advanced notice. Bardstown officials recommended booking at least 1-2 months in advance. For major events, such as Bardstown's Kentucky Bourbon Festival in September, some people secure rooms a full year ahead of time.

When should I make a reservation at a Kentucky bourbon distillery restaurant?

In general, officials recommend booking a dining reservation at least two weeks ahead of time. Distillery restaurants, typically, operate fewer hours than traditional restaurants, so their reservations will be scarcer. If you’ve already secured a bourbon experience at a distillery, try to book a reservation that coincides with it.

When should I book a tour company to help me travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Again, officials recommend locking this down as soon as possible. Many tour companies open up their calendars for booking as much as a year in advance.

How many Kentucky bourbon distilleries can you visit in a single day?

Tours typically range from 30 to 90 minutes. As you're planning your calendar, make sure you’re watching how closely you stack them and what your travel time between distilleries may be. Many distilleries have cocktail bars and gift shops, so even if you have some lag time in between, you will almost certainly have somewhere interesting to linger.

The closer the distilleries are to each other, the more you can visit in a day. Louisville, for example, has several distilleries within walking distance of each other, and in Lexington, you can hit three distilleries back-to-back at the Distillery District . Travelers will need a car or tour bus to get around distilleries in Bardstown or Frankfort.

A leisurely traveler can hit about three in a single day, whereas a more thorough planner might go to five.

What are the hidden gems along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Smaller craft distilleries tend to be easier to book a tour with than internationally known brands. Distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour may have more availability than the traditional Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

For example, Whiskey Thief Distilling Company in Frankfort still offers walk-in tours, but they recommend you call ahead.

Many newer or smaller distilleries are not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail such as J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery in Frankfort as well as Louisville's Buzzards Roost and NuLu Whiskey Company .

Bardstown Bourbon Company and Castle & Key also operate tasting rooms in downtown Louisville.

Features columnist Maggie Menderski writes about what makes Louisville, Southern Indiana and Kentucky unique, wonderful, and occasionally, a little weird.
