Event watch: ladies night tour comes to morzine.

ladies tour morzine

Don’t let the name put you off; after a successful first year the Ladies Night Tour is making its rounds to Morzine again in February. Organised by the Federation Française de Ski , the tour is a collection of five events across five different French resorts designed to showcase some of France’s best female ski racing talent, inspire young women to get their race skis on and present the concept of parallel slalom in a fun, fresh way. The event will be coming to Morzine on the 27th February in a blaze of exciting competition, spectacular light displays and a fun atmosphere.

The competition is parallel slalom, a discipline that will be featured in this year’s Winter Olympics and involves two athletes racing head-to-head down side-by-side slalom courses. Not only is it super intense to watch, the Ladies Night Tour format sees French national team racers competing alongside up-and-coming talent, which gives the event an extra edge. Another aspect that makes this event extra special is that it takes place at night, and aims to provide spectators with a fun-filled, party-time atmosphere to add to the competitive aspects. Plus, all five events take place in the school holidays, making them a great family event that’ll really get kids inspired to race. While the main event is held in the evening, qualifiers take place in the day, so whatever your routine, you should be able to catch a bit of the action.

As usual with a nighttime event, the action doesn’t jut stop at the skiing. The night will also comprise of light snows, speed riding demonstrations, a fireworks display, Rossingol ski test and of course, the legendary ESF torchlit descent. Le Tremplin will also be open throughout and after the main event providing music, dancing and all round good vibes. If you’re in Morzine on the 27th of February, it’s definitely worth a space in your diary.

Ladies Italian Open: England's Amy Taylor claims maiden Ladies European Tour title with one-shot win

Amy Taylor claimed a one-shot victory over Maria Hernandez at the Ladies Italian Open to claim a maiden Ladies European Tour title; Watch the KPMG Women's PGA Championship live from Thursday on Sky Sports Golf

Sunday 16 June 2024 15:46, UK

England’s Amy Taylor secured her breakthrough Ladies European Tour title with a dramatic one-shot win at the Ladies Italian Open.

The 23-year-old carded a three-under 69 on the final day at Golf Nazionale, mixing six birdies with three bogeys to finish on 10 under and one clear of Spain's Maria Hernandez.

Taylor took a one-shot lead into the final day and pulled clear of the field with four birdies in a six-hole stretch from the third, only to give the chasing pack hope with bogeys at the 11th and 13th.

Further birdies at the 14th and 16th gave Taylor a two-shot cushion heading to the par-five last, where a bogey was enough to take the trophy and secure her LET status for the next three years.

"I have no words at the moment!" she said after the victory. "I can't really believe it. Earlier this week I went to the [Trevi] fountain in Rome and I did throw a coin in and wish that I would win! I didn't tell anyone, but it came true!

Hernandez came close to a second LET title - and first since 2010 - thanks to finishing her final-round 67 with an incredible chip-in eagle on the par-five 18th, while France's Camille Chevalier claimed a share of third on seven under alongside Shannon Tan and Italian amateur Francesca Fiorellini.

The Meijer LPGA Classic delivered big for it's 10th anniversary. A year after Leona Maguire shot a final-round 64 to secure her second LPGA title, this year's edition at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Mich., went into a sudden-death, three-way playoff between Lilia Vu, Grace Kim and fan favorite Lexi Thompson.

All three made birdie on the first two playoff holes—both times it was the par-5 18th hole—but Vu finally made birdie the third time around when both Kim and Thompson could only muster par. It was Vu's fifth LPGA victory and it was her first start in months after taking time off to deal with an ailing back.

She shot a final-round 65 that ultimately helped her earn the $450,000 first-place prize from the $3 million overall purse.

Thompson, who announced at the U.S. Women's Open that she will retire from full-time play on tour after this year, shot a final-round 68. Kim, looking for her second LPGA title, shot 73.

Nelly Korda opened with an unlikely 76, but rebounded with a 67. She missed the cut by a shot.

Up next is the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Washington, where Brooke Henderson won her first major championship as an 18-year-old back in 2016.

Here's the rundown for earnings for each player who made the cut this week at the Meijer Classic.

Tour de Suisse stage 8 Live - Mountain time trial to decide GC winner

Tour de suisse women: demi vollering wins again in stage 2 time trial.

Longo Borghini second, Cadzow third against the clock from Aigle to Villars-sur-Ollon

One day after winning the opening road stage in Villars-sur-Olon, Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) repeated the trick on the stage 2 time trial in the same mountain town with a strong performance on the final kilometres to stop the clock at 39:47 minutes.

Her effort beat the time of Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) by 18 seconds. Kim Cadzow (EF Education-Cannondale) finished third at 25 seconds. In the general classification, Vollering has now extended her advantage to 1:26  over Longo Borghini and 1:28 minutes over Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek).

“It was a really hard climb, and at the intermediate time, I was only third, but I knew that I can push the limits on the last part and really empty myself completely. That’s what I did, and luckily, it was enough for the first place, and I even gained some time, so I’m really happy with that,” said Vollering after the stage.

“I feel good, and it’s not my top peak yet, actually I’m surprised and really happy with my shape, so I hope I can even continue this for my biggest goals a bit later in the season."

How it unfolded

The stage 2 time trial started in the Rhône Valley at the UCI’s Centre Mondial du Cyclisme in Aigle and covered 15.7km to the ski resort of Villars-sur-Ollon at an altitude of 1,249 metres. The first timing point came after 5.2 flat kilometres before the climb began. A second intermediate time was taken in Huémoz, 3.2km from the finish.

Early starter Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck) was fastest on the first part with 6:34 minutes, but she did not climb as well as Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale), whose time of 43:28 stood for a while.

Becky Storrie (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) took 17 seconds off Faulkner’s time and stayed in the hot seat for almost half an hour until Brodie Chapman (Lidl-Trek) bested Storrie’s time by two minutes, setting a new benchmark at 41:11.

Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-Sram) turned out to be her team’s best finisher, stopping the clock at 40:48 minutes and taking the lead from Chapman. Her teammates Kasia Niewiadoma and Elise Chabbey weren’t as good, losing more than two and three minutes, respectively.

Juliette Labous (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) posted a time 28 seconds faster than Niedermaier at the intermediate time halfway up the climb but lost half of her advantage on the way to the finish. 40:34 wass still the new best time – however, Cadzow soon took 21 seconds off that to take the lead.

Longo Borghini was the only rider to come close to Schweinberger’s time on the flat section and continued to impress on the climb. Her intermediate time of 29:48 minutes was 20 seconds faster than Cadzow. At the finish line, Longo Borghini was still eight seconds faster than the New Zealander to take the lead with 40:05 minutes.

Realini did a good time trial to finish in sixth place, and Chabbey was off the pace, so it all came down to Vollering who was riding in the yellow leader’s jersey.

At the intermediate time, the Dutch superstar was 24 seconds behind Longo Borghini, but on the last 3.2 kilometres, she took an astonishing 42 seconds from the Italian, finishing in 39:47 minutes – the only rider to break the 40-minute barrier – and extending her GC lead.

Tour de France depart in Les Gets Etape 15

Tour de France in Morzine and Les Gets

Biggest cycle race in Europe arrives in Les Portes du Soleil

Every summer France is gripped by the biggest cycle race in Europe - Le Tour de France.

The Alps have played a large part in the race over the years with the gruelling mountain climbs providing some of the most exciting spectacles of the event. The route changes slightly each year, taking in different towns, villages and cols along the way.

Even if the race doesn't pass near to where you are this summer you can guarantee that it will still be avidly watched in bars and cafés around the country with everyone joining in to cheer on the famous yellow jersey!

15th July – The Tour de France Stage 14 – Annemasse to Morzine

16th July – The Tour de France Stage 15 – Les Gets to Saint Gervais les Bains

For more general information check our introduction about the Tour de France .

What to see

For the 110th Tour de France, Morzine is hosting a stage finish on July 15 after a gruelling ride from Annemasse. The day will end with the ascent of 2 passes around Morzine: the Col de la Ramaz and the famous Col de Joux Plane, before descending into Morzine to reach the finish line of the 14th stage.

Not only has Morzine got a finish this year, our neighbours Les Gets has a depart the very next day, on Sunday 16 July, the 15th stage will take place from Les Gets to Saint Gervais Mont Blanc. A 180 km route awaits the riders, who will pass through Cluses, Bonneville, Annecy-le-Vieux, Faverges and Megève. More information on the Les Gets depart here

The town will be buzzing with excitement, with visitors from across the globe. There will be numerous road closures in place, so it's not going to be easy navigating your way around, and all our usual advice about where to watch the riders (when Morzine is the finish stage) is out the window this year... hence why we suggest finding a bar!

So, as Morzine is a finish stage, look for an uphill section of the course where they are climbing and won't whizz past before you've really seen them. Here's our tips on how to catch a glimpse of the riders:

Hiking Joux Plane is the most gruelling ascent of the day with an 11km climb at an average of 9%. You can walk to the top from Morzine via the Nyon plateau and continue on up. Usually you can find a spot in the last km, but be aware it's a big walk and fairly steep and you can expect to be climbing for around three hours before reaching the summit. The caravan usually hits the peak around 15:00, and the first riders about an hour and a half later. Similarly, if you don't mind a big walk then the top of the Col de la Ramaz and Praz-de-Lys could be a good option. Riders usually pass Ramaz peak around 15:30.

Lifts If hiking isn't for you, get a pedestrian lift pass which is how many spectators get a good viewing spot. You can access Ranfoilly bowl by the Chavannes lift from Les Gets, the Pleney lift from Morzine (one hour walk) and the Charniaz lift from the Nyon plateau. You would then have a short walk to the second short ascent that comes after the peak of the Joux Plane before the descent into Morzine. Similarly you can get the Nyon lift and walk from the plateau, which would cut around two hours from your hike. You can find your way with a lift map.

Mountain Biking You could also access the Joux Plane via the lifts on a mountain bike. Why not spend the day exploring Les Gets before you head up the Chavannes lift to enjoy watching the riders come in. The road between Les Gets and Morzine will be open, which gives you the flexibility to park in Les Gets and then return back to Morzine by car, once the roads have reopened - bear in the mind they will still be very busy though.

Road Biking With road closures it will be pretty difficult to access some of the Tour de France route by bike, but there's no reason you can't go for a ride before accessing parts of the course from alternative points. You could try cycling the Col de l'Encrenaz from Morzine then dropping to the base of the Ramaz to watch the riders descend to Taninges. You could also try cycling towards Mieussy via the Col de Jambaz and Onnion where you should be able to join the edge of the Ramaz climb. You can then race back to Morzine to see if you can arrive back in town before the tour riders, who will then be heading off to battle the Joux Plane.

Driving When Morzine is a finish on a stage there are a couple of car parks reserved for park&ride in Morzine, which might be a good option if you're hoping to watch the stage finish at the tourist office square. The Prodains and Nyon car parks are run on a first come first served basis but they will be well worth trying. From Nyon it's a beautiful, short, flat walk along the river into town, if you don't fancy hopping on the bus. You'll also come out right at the bottom of the Rue du Bourg, which will be the sprint finish. You could also leave your car a little out of town and ride/walk along the river from Saint Jean d'Aulps or Montriond into Morzine. You'll come out at the Palais des Sports, which is just a few minutes from the centre of town. The first riders are usually expected to arrive at the finish line in Morzine around 16:50.

The Tour first discovered Morzine in 1975, and since then it has had the honour of being a Stage town over 20 times.

The infamous Col de Joux Plane is the most famous of the Morzine Cols and has been known to make or break riders over the years. Climbers shine here, categorised as " Hors Categorie " (ie. Beyond Category) by the UCI, it is one of the toughest challenges the riders take on. The climb from Samöens to the summit is 11.6km, with an average gradient of 8.5%, (12.5% in the steepest part), with an overall altitude gain of 998m.
