Touring Australia for the first time, WavyLand proudly presents the highly anticipated debut tour for COLD CAVE .

Cold Cave is the creative rebirth of acclaimed Musician and Writer Wesley Eisold. With an already prolific number of releases, Cold Cave has become a name synonymous with the contemporary resurgence of Darkwave and Synth-Pop, propelling Cold Cave to tours with Nine Inch Nails, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, Echo and The Bunnymen, and Gary Numan. Cutting his teeth in legendary hardcore punk and noise bands American Nightmare and Some Girls, Eisold’s body of work has truly affected a generation of listeners. Through constant crosspollination Eisold has gained mass appeal, influencing underground and popular culture with his ever evolving artistic vision.

A reluctant god of nihilism and despair, his baritone is as rich and resonating as that of Morrissey, Nick Cave, or David Bowie, juxtaposed with the prophetic musings of his collaborator Amy Lee, stylistically they are heirs to the noir of The Velvet Underground, Joy Division, The Cure, and Depeche Mode, with the ideals of artistic minimalism reminiscent of the avant-garde. Marked by a pitch black aesthetic - there is a light of hope in their brand of goth new wave. Eisold was born without his left hand, making his foray into electronic music and singing, the obvious path, situating him as a voice of adversity for the outsider. Cold Cave craft melodic synthscapes with jackhammer beats, songs celebrating the contradictory beauty of the human condition.

Cold Cave (formed in 2007) is the stage name American electronic indie-rock and darkwave artist Wesley Eisold whom lends influences from the likes of Joy Division and Depeche Mode – hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.

Former vocalist of the hardcore bands Give Up the Ghost and Some Girls, Cold Cave represents Wesley Eisold’s earliest excursion into instrumentation. Born with one hand, electronic music production through synths and drum machines were seen as more accessible to the musician who released his earliest material on Dais Records. In 2008 Eisold issued his debut EP “Coma Potion” on Heartwood Records, which was followed by the full-length “Love Comes Close” in 2009. Led by the single “The Trees Grew Emotions and Died”, the record earned a host of esteemed reviews and spawned the subsequent singles “The Laurels” and “Life Magazine”.

A pair of EPs followed in 2010, the first a split release with Prurient entitled “Stars Explode” and the second a collection of remix for his track “Life Magazine”. The following year Cold Cave issued the sophomore studio album “Cherish the Light Years” on Matador Records. Earning posistive reviews from the likes of Pitchfork Media, the album spawned the singles “The Great Pan Dead”, “Villains of the Moon”, and “Confetti” / “Believe in My Blood”.

Initially intended to feature on an upcoming album, the singles “A Little Death to Laugh”, “Oceans with No End”, “God Made the World”, “Black Boots”, and “Nausea, The Earth and Me” appeared in 2012 and 2013. The following year Cold Cave issued a pair of compilations “Cremations” and “Full Cold Moon” both of which collected his most thoughtful and challenging tracks to appeal to a larger audience.

Live reviews

The music of Cold Cave live is a dark, synthpop, noisy affair. But that is what you are here for, right? He puts on the loudest, synthetic, noise music you will hear. Heads are banging and drinks are being poured.

The audience is rather relaxed, listening to the haunting synthetic sounds, until one woman lets out an excited yell for the musician and his sounds. Heads begin to loosen and bob a bit, and the music ends on a dark note with a short burst of applause from the audience. But that is just one, intimate affair full off the hip and the young.

When Cold Cave plays a large, concert venue the audience gets fully into it. As the lights flashed in quick time in Coppenhagen heads were banged, applause was made, and the darkness was celebrated in both the audience and the music. The light shows were nothing short of spectacular, as bright white flashes gave way to blue circles of ominous darkness. It perfectly underscored the gothic synthetic sounds that made up the musician's performance.

You could not be there without feeling like you were being hypnotized by a new wave of sound and noise.

Report as inappropriate

Darkwave musician Wesley Eisold better known by his stage name Cold Cave seems to dismiss all conventions of a live performance. Even in the smallest venues, a view of the stage and suitable stage lighting is seen to be a necessity yet to match the dark undertones of his synth pop he prefers a dusky affair which seems to strangely connect him, the music and the fans more succinctly. Performing with a couple of other musicians, the whole performance feels rather impromptu and unplanned as the group skip between the fast paced to the disjointed and surreal.

It is undoubtedly engaging and the audience gets completely behind it as there is very little you could compare a Cold Cave show to. It becomes rather noisy at times as all the musicians begin to jam seemingly simultaneously yet this then contrasts the sultry, silent tones of 'Undone' even more. With a strange working formula and a dedication to his art, a Wesley Eisold show was never going to be a straight forward state of affairs yet the audience seem to genuinely enjoy stepping within his darkened world for 90 minutes of truly original synth pop.

Well, I made to the Cold Cave show last night at the Paper Tiger Club here in San Antonio. Unfortunately I wasn't all that in to Cold Cave. They kept the lights low so you couldn't really see anybody on stage and they didn't move around very much. There were a few really good songs like 'Glory' but the rest were like album songs that you listen to once and then skip over. But the rest of the crowd seemed to like them. I was like 'meh' and left early.

I missed the first opening act Choir Boy but I didn't get to see the second one Black Marble. That was a treat! I think they surprised the crowd with their beautiful style. Really nice melodies and bass lines. They made the concert worth seeing. I'd definitely go see them again.

Cold Cave were pretty basic New Order like band. The crowd seemed to like them but not as much as they liked Adult. Adult are so original and just amazing to watch. It may be that Adult has more of a hardcore cult following and that's why the energy for their show was so intense. Both bands were great in their own right. It was disappointing that Psychic TV couldn't be there but we still had fun. I do hope Genesis gets better.

Third time seeing Cold Cave. Favorite performance so far, they put on amazing show. Openers ADULT. and Vowws were really badass too! My only complaint is that the venue (Paper Tiger in San Antonio) does not support videos so the audience misses out on that part. No fault of the bands, just what the venue is lacking.

Amazing show! My first time at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever actually and it just fit the vibe and atmosphere so well. Never seen a crowd of fans so happy to be there. SRSQ was scary good too!

The Big Five-O: Cold Chisel Announce 50th Anniversary Tour

Update: Due to “unprecedented” demand for tickets, Cold Chisel adds new dates for Sydney’s QUDOS Bank Arena on Nov. 16th and Mornington Racecourse, Victoria on Nov. 10th. A second night has been added at Sandalford Wines in W.A. on Sunday October 20.

It’s the biggest Australian tour news of the year: legendary rockers Cold Chisel have announced a special 50th anniversary tour.

Announced today, Cold Chisel will celebrate 50 years together across Australia later this year, performing in Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Brisbane, and beyond between October and November (see full dates below).

The tour has been meticulously planned, with the first show taking place in Armidale, where the band based themselves in 1974-1975 while Don Walker completed his university studies, and ending in Adelaide, where the band formed all those years ago.

The Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne shows will be staged under a specially constructed 10,000 capacity Big Top tent, a nod to the band’s iconic ‘An Evening with the Circus Animals’ shows in 1982 which closed with Jimmy Barnes singing while riding pillion on a motorbike flying up a trapeze wire.

‘The Big Five-0’ Tour will be a tour like no other, with the band simply touring “because we all love playing gigs together.” Expect to hear timeless classics including “Khe Sanh”, “Cheap Wine”, “All for You”, “Last Wave of Summer”, and “Saturday Night”.

Walker can’t wait to get started. “We’ll be going all out to celebrate a milestone birthday like this. Bookending the tour in the two places where we first welded the band together, building these circus tent shows in 3 cities, bringing along some great guests and doing a set which reaches back across our whole song catalogue should all make ‘The Big Five-0’ a tour to remember,” he says.

Ian Moss adds, “We wanted to celebrate our 50th birthday by revisiting all of our best work from across the years. As we prepare the setlist, there are a minimum of 15 songs that our audience demands to hear. This time we’ll be playing all of them plus we’ll be throwing in lots of musical surprises as well.”

The tour announcement follows Jimmy Barnes ‘s well-documented recent health battles, which makes the upcoming shows extra meaningful for the legendary rocker. While in recovery from emergency open heart surgery last year, getting back onstage with Cold Chisel was always in his mind.

“Cold Chisel are never apart. We’re as close as brothers. Some of the best moments of my life have been spent on stage with those boys, and I hope we keep going ‘til the day we drop,” he shares.

“There have been plenty of times where I never thought I’d live to see this day so I’m going to make the most of it. I can’t wait to celebrate with my mates and with all the fans who have been such a big part of our story. We’re gonna smash it!”

As for bassist Phil Small, there are certain cities he can’t wait to play. “Gold is obviously associated with 50th anniversaries, so we thought it would be fun to pull the tour into Ballarat – Australia’s gold mining capital. We’re looking forward to playing the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong and Hobart too because each of those cities have been important to us in various ways over the last 50 years,” he says.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Tuesday, June 4th at 12pm local time. Limited tickets will also go on sale to members of Cold Chisel’s mailing list on Friday, May 31st at 12pm local time (sign up here ). Cold Chisel will be joined by special guests including The Cruel Sea and Karen Lee Andrews at select shows.

Cold Chisel celebrates 50th anniversary with a national tour

Cold Chisel are back to celebrate their 50th birthday in style.

The band are marking a golden anniversary with a national tour, kicking off in Armidale where they were based back in 1974.

The beloved rockers will perform in major cities and regional centres across the country, culminating in a big Adelaide homecoming show.

Plus, the concerts in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will be staged under a circus big top, a nod to the wild gigs Chisel performed in tents to promote their 1982 album, Circus Animals.

But Jimmy Barnes is disarmingly frank when I ask him what it's like to be still playing gigs with his Cold Chisel band mates, 50 years on.

"If you'd have asked me 50 years ago if I would still be doing it, I would have said no, because I didn't think we'd live to 21!"

Immediately those images spring to mind of a sweat-soaked, bandana-wearing frontman necking bottles of vodka on stage between songs (and sometimes during them).

Jimmy and the band worked hard and played even harder — the death wish was real.

Cold Chisel band pictured in black and white. Five men look at the camera. Jimmy Barnes, centre, wears a black leather jacket.

These days, the pace has slowed a bit. They are, of course, men in their late sixties and early seventies.

But the passion to play together remains undiminished.

"Once you get back on stage, it just gels again," bass player Phil Small told News Breakfast.

"It's the amazing thing about this band. It's enjoyable on that stage. And that's what we all look forward to."

Cold Chisel's national tour starts in October. While there won't be a new album to promote, a best-of album will drop in August.

It will just be one of Australia's most popular and enduring bands, belting out anthems like Khe Sanh, Bow River, Cheap Wine and Flame Trees to crowds that will sing along word for word.

TV interview scene. Band of four men left of frame, journalist and sound op to the right. Camera out of focus in centre.

Guitarist and singer Ian Moss insists the band knows exactly what the audiences want.

"There's definitely a minimum of 14 songs [we need to play] if we want to get out of the venue alive," he jokes.

"Without the songs, you know, we'd be great musicians. But, we've got some fantastic songs."

For chief songwriter Don Walker, composing a set list brimming with classics involves a bit of work.

"Well, I do a lot of consulting with the other guys, and I throw around ideas," he told News Breakfast.

"You know, 'what do you think of this?' And everybody comes back with 'that's not gonna work! That's gonna fall over three songs in!' And then I go back to it!

"But we eventually come up with — between us — the right thing."

The tour will be especially meaningful for Barnes, who survived a near-death medical emergency late last year.

A bacterial infection led to open heart surgery, and months of painstaking recovery.

"In November when I got sick, prior to that week, I was healthy as a Mallee bull," he said.

"I was probably healthier than I was back 30 to 40 years ago in Chisel. But I got a bug, and it nearly killed me. And it shows you how quick and how fleeting life can be."

"But seizing the moment, and if you get the opportunity, get together and play music with the people you love … if anything, it brought that home to me."

Back on the Circus Animals tour, they shared the big top tents with motorbikes and trapeze acts. But Barnes says things will be a bit more subdued this time around.

"I don't know if you'll be seeing that!" he said.

"They had a motorbike above the wire, and a trapeze underneath. And I was underneath it singing and drinking vodka at the same time. So, it was pretty full on.

Cold Chisel band performs, circa 1980s. Singer Jimmy Barnes right of frame, in focus, holds mic while wearing red bandana.

"I think we'll we'll keep our feet on solid ground this time. These days, it's much more about about playing the music and making the music connect … I did a lot of things with smoke and mirrors in the old days."

Marking 50 years together is no mean feat for any band, especially one that lived on the edge.

For Don Walker, the secret to Chisel's success and longevity is simple.

"I think we somehow lucked into the two best singers of the generation. And how that happened with a bunch of young guys in Adelaide, I don't know," Walker said.

"We were attracted to each other as young blokes by the musical skills of the others. And then we did a lot of hard work on the road and just became, I think, good at what we did.

"With the other bands of our generation, there was a lot of intense competition and, and everybody got very good at what they do."

In an era when a lot of acts from the 70's and 80's seem to be in a perpetual touring loop, it's surely nothing for Chisel to now aim for its 60th anniversary?

"I mean, I think as long as we have the opportunity, if we can get up there and make music that inspires us. And if we make some connection with an audience, yeah, absolutely," Barnes said.

"I'd like to think that we'd still be here for the 60th anniversary. But, you know, maybe we'll go for the 55th first!"

Cold Chisel's 50th Anniversary Tour runs through October and November this year.

Watch the Australian Story documentary 'Cold Chisel: On the Outside Looking In' Monday at 8:00pm (AEST) on ABC TV and ABC iview.
