Greystone Mansion has a very dark history, it was originally built by Edward Doheny as a wedding gift for his son, Ned. Unfortunately though Ned was killed just a few months later in a murder/suicide.

5. Walt Disneys Home

Address:  355 Carolwood Drive .

Carolwood Drive is definitely the perfect place to tick of  a few celebrity homes.  Just down from Rod Stewarts place you will find the remains of Walt Disneys old house. The property was purchased in 1949 and sold for $74 million dollars before been converted to the Kilgour building.

Stretching approximately 2.5 miles through the heart of Los Angeles, California, this thoroughfare has a rich history that mirrors the evolution of the American film and entertainment industry. From its humble beginnings as a dusty, sun-soaked pathway to becoming the epicenter of the global entertainment industry, Hollywood Boulevard has a story that is as fascinating as the movies it has produced.

Early Days: A Rural Dirt Road

Hollywood Boulevard’s history can be traced back to the late 19th century when Los Angeles was a sleepy, agrarian town. In 1853, a prominent landowner named Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife Daeida envisioned a thriving community in the area and purchased 160 acres of land. They named their ranch the “Hollywood” Ranch, inspired by the sprawling holly bushes that adorned the landscape.

At that time, Hollywood Boulevard, then known as Prospect Avenue, was little more than a dirt road winding through fields and orange groves. It was a far cry from the bustling, neon-lit boulevard we know today. However, this bucolic setting would soon change dramatically.

The Birth of the Film Industry: The Hollywood Studio Era

Hollywood Boulevard’s transformation into the epicenter of the global entertainment industry began in the early 20th century with the rise of the film industry. One of the first studios to set up shop in Hollywood was Nestor Film Company in 1911. Soon after, other studios followed suit, drawn by the region’s mild climate and abundant sunshine, which was ideal for filming.

The influx of studios and filmmakers led to the rapid development of Hollywood Boulevard. The boulevard’s first grand hotel, the Hollywood Hotel, opened in 1902, offering accommodations for the industry’s elite. By the 1920s, it was renamed the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and became a symbol of Hollywood glamour.

The construction of the Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in 1922 and the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in 1927 added to the boulevard’s allure. These iconic theaters hosted countless film premieres and cemented Hollywood Boulevard’s status as the epicenter of the film industry.

The Golden Age of Hollywood: Hollywood Boulevard Shines Bright

The 1930s and 1940s were the heyday of Hollywood Boulevard. It was during this era that the Hollywood Walk of Fame was conceived. In 1958, the first stars were embedded in the sidewalks to honor those who had made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame has since grown to include over 2,600 brass stars embedded in the sidewalks, each bearing the name of a legendary actor, director, musician, or other entertainment industry professional.

Hollywood Boulevard also became home to some of the most famous theaters in the world, including the El Capitan Theatre and the Pantages Theatre. These venues hosted extravagant premieres and live performances, showcasing the biggest stars of the time.

The boulevard was further immortalized in popular culture with the release of countless films set in and around Hollywood. Movies like “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) and “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952) captured the allure and challenges of life in Tinseltown.

Challenges and Transformation: The Decline and Revival

By the 1960s, Hollywood Boulevard faced significant challenges. Urban decay and the migration of the entertainment industry to other parts of Los Angeles led to a decline in the boulevard’s glamour. Theaters closed, and the area became associated with crime and seediness.

However, Hollywood Boulevard wouldn’t stay down for long. In the late 20th century, efforts were made to revitalize the area. The Hollywood and Highland Center, a massive retail and entertainment complex, opened in 2001. This development included the construction of the Kodak Theatre, now known as the Dolby Theatre, which became the new home of the Academy Awards.

With these developments, Hollywood Boulevard underwent a resurgence. Tourists once again flocked to the Walk of Fame, and the area saw an influx of new businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The historic theaters were restored to their former glory, hosting premieres and live performances once more.

Hollywood Boulevard Today: A Living Legacy

Today, Hollywood Boulevard continues to be a vibrant and iconic destination. The Hollywood Walk of Fame remains a top tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors from around the world each year. Tourists and locals alike can stroll along the sidewalk, pausing to admire the stars of their favorite celebrities.

The boulevard is also home to Madame Tussauds Hollywood, where visitors can get up close and personal with lifelike wax figures of their favorite stars. The TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman’s) continues to host premieres and is a must-visit for film enthusiasts.

This list of celebrities in NYC just the beginning, ya’ll. There are so many in New York City, Manhattan specifically. You know what to expect from Velvet Ropes’ celebrity maps, and the same is true for our upcoming NYC celebrity map. But until it’s launched, here’s a breakdown of a few highlights!

Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis

Actress Olivia Wilde lives in the Brooklyn area of New York. She and her husband Jason Sudeikis previously sold their home in the meatpacking district for a huge $3.8 million. They moved to Brooklyn from there and upgraded to a massive 6,300 square foot home in the Clinton Hill neighborhood. The home is truly beautiful, and in a great location for the couple and their son. The mansion recently went under renovation in which 100 new windows were fitted, as well as a state of the art air conditioning system and an upgrade to their private garden. It features a library, six fireplaces, a large living area with a hidden projector screen to transform the room into a cinema, high ceilings and a beautiful kitchen.

When in NYC, Lady  Gaga lives in a Central Park apartment with fabulous views of the city, and a pretty hefty price tag. The apartment is located at 40 Central Park South and it pretty spacey and luxurious for the star. It spreads across 2000 square feet and comes with an amazing FOUR terraces. It’s also super private, as neither size has neighbors either side. It also comes fitted with a giant marble stairway, a large dining room, a chef’s kitchen and a luscious master bedroom and en-suite bathroom.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake

Actress Jessica Biel and superstar hubby Justin Timberlake have recently moved into the star-studded building in Greenwich, NYC. It is also home to the likes of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Lawrence. The pair reportedly sold their previous New York pad for $6.65 million and splashed in excess of $20 million on their new penthouse in the building that runs along the Hudson River. It has 4 bedrooms, lots of open space and a beautiful outdoor terrace. The building itself comes with some pretty cool facilities and amenities including wet bars, gyms, a rooftop and an indoor pool that is 75 feet long.

Cameron Diaz

A-lister Cameron Diaz lives in a stunning Manhattan apartment that cost her a fair few pennies. The apartment (which cost around $9 million), is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and spreads across 2,400 square feet. Inside the home, the actress has decorated the interior with bold and vibrant pieces, as well as brass decor and bright colors. It really reflects the personality of Diaz. The interior of each room is slightly different, but each is just as magnificent and luxurious as each other. The rooms of the fancy apartment include a large guest bedroom and bathroom, a dining room, a grey and white (and perfectly clean) master bedroom, a bright kitchen, and so much more.

Katie Holmes

After actress Katie Holmes divorced from her ex-husband and fellow actor Tom Cruise, she moved her and her young daughter Suri to a leased apartment in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. The apartment has two bedrooms and two and a half stunning bathrooms and is rented for around $25,000 per month, which is a step up from the previous $12,500 apartment. The building is home to many other celebs, which means it has great privacy and a host of security and staff members. It also has a private laundry and concierge service, as well as a large rooftop, a pool, a gym and even a playroom for any kids that are living in the residence.

Hugh Jackman

Actor Hugh Jackman is the proud owner of a triplex apartment in Greenwich Village. He owns the 8th, 9th and 10th floor of the building, which spans across a huge space of 11,000 square feet in total. The home is very minimalistic and decorated in a simplistic yet luxurious and sophisticated manner. The rooms facing the Hudson River have HUGE floor to ceiling windows, which let in a great amount of natural light to the open space, and offer spectacular views of the city in the distance. Each floor has different facilities that fit the actor’s every need. Floor 8 has 3 bedrooms each with their own private bathroom, as well as a library and music room. Floor 9 has a beautiful living area with a double high ceiling and a dining room which can seat many guests, a kitchen, a wine cellar, and even a gallery. And last but not least, floor 10 has the master bedroom, a gym and sauna, and a private dressing room.

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts lives with her partner Liev Schreiber and their two sons in an incredible Manhattan apartment. After they purchased the property, it was victim to awful flooding before they were due to move in. After months upon months of grueling renovation, and a whole lot of stress (and money!), the home was finally ready. It is decorated to perfection and is the ideal family home for this superstar clan. Some of its features include a large open space, a walk-in pantry, a large master bedroom, and a grand dining room. When asked about her newly refurbished home, Watts said, “I wanted a place where we could snuggle as a family. I didn’t want to make a showhouse. I wanted to make a true home for us.”

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys lives in a stunning mansion in Englewood, just outside the city of NYC. And with 32 rooms, it certainly is a place fit for a queen. It has 8 bedrooms, 10 full bathrooms, and 4 half bathrooms. Other facilities include an indoor pool, a garage fit for 5 cars and a tennis course, all spread across an incredible 25,000 square feet. It’s also got an entertainment room, a home theatre, a stunning kitchen, and a grand dining area.

Superstar A-lister Madonna was never going to do things by halves. And her house is no different. The singer lives in a beautiful NY townhouse on the Upper East Side. The home (which used to be three separate homes) is 57 feet wide and boasts 26 magnificent rooms. 13 of those rooms are bedrooms and a 38-foot wide drawing room. The home has 11 foot high ceilings, 9 fireplaces and a 3,000 square foot backyard, which can be enjoyed in the warmer months. Each room is decorated with a combination of modern and vintage design, which makes for a totally unique home – like the singer herself. Wooden floors, grand bathtubs, and beautiful art make the home very special indeed.

Cyndi Lauper

The True Colors singer Cyndi Lauper had spent 30 years living in Stamford, CT in a beautiful home. The home was spread across three bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a stunning outdoor pool. The house was built in 1976 and is the location in which Lauper wrote the famous Kinky Boots. It takes up around 1 and a half acres and has some incredible features, including a table and bench imported from an old-school Parisian train, her platinum records displayed proudly on the walls and a 19th century English manor house front door. It also has hand painted patterned walls, French tiles in the bathroom and stunning high ceilings. Cyndi and her husband sold the home in early 2018, to move to Manhattan where their son attends college.

Rapper 50 Cent has a huge mansion which sits just outside of Manhattan, in Connecticut. He has been trying to sell the 50,000 square foot property for many years but has been short of luck time and time again. The home is HUGE and has amazing features and fantastic decor, but it was originally put on the market for a staggering $18.5 million. What makes the home worth so much cash? Well, it has 19 bedrooms, a gym, basketball court, an indoor pool, a recording studio and even a small nightclub! It also has a large garage as well as a helipad for helicopters to land. It has grand designs, including marble floors and an opulent staircase in the reception area, a games room, home theatre and even its very own lake. The home is now up for sale for $5 million, and he spends more time in central New York.

Leonardo DiCaprio

DiCaprio, one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood, is currently renting a penthouse in NYC. The apartment spreads across 3,548 square foot and has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and 1 half bathroom. It is worth $14 million and has three exposures and two outdoor terraces. It has floor to ceiling windows which offer spectacular views for the star to enjoy. The building itself has many fantastic amenities for the residents to use, which includes a spa and steam rooms, a saltwater pool, an outdoor plaza, a fitness studio, and a lounge. What more could you possibly need? Another 2 apartments apparently. Although the actor is currently spending time in this uptown apartment, he does actually own two other apartments, which are adjacent units and are located at 2 River Terrace in Battery Park. Those locations were purchased by DiCaprio in 2008 and 2014.

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers home, which sold for an incredible $28 million after her sad death in 2015, was a giant penthouse filled with lavish luxuries and grand decor. Located at 1 East 62nd Street, off Fifth Avenue, the home was adjacent to her daughter Melissa, and grandson Edgar. The beautiful penthouse has 11 rooms, 4 of which are bedrooms and 4 of which are bathrooms. It also has 5 fireplaces for the colder winter months and two terraces which offer stunning views of both downtown NY and Central Park. A beautiful location for a beautiful soul! You can enter the elevator which takes you up to a grand ballroom, which also has a music room with 23-foot ceilings attached. This is where Joan hosted a number of celebrity-filled parties and gatherings.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway and her hubby Adam Shulman recently moved from a $4.25 million loft in NYC, to a $2.55 million penthouse on the Upper West Side. Although a $2 million NYC penthouse sounds like a dream home for many of us non-celebs, for Anne and Adam, it was actually a downsize, but just as luxurious all the same. The 1,200 home has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a beautiful high ceilinged kitchen complete with a skylight to make it nice and fresh. It also has a wine storage area, a patio terrace, and a cozy living space. It is decorated in a modern manner, with greys and whites being the main theme consistent throughout the home.

Howard Stern

Howard Stern has spent an incredible $15 million on two apartments that are located on the 53rd floor of Manhattan’s Millennium Tower. The two apartments total 2,546 square foot and they sit just below his OTHER home, a penthouse which spreads across 4,149 on the 54th floor. Aside from his property in Manhattan, he also rents a large home in Southampton in The Hamptons in New York, whilst he waits for his Hamptons mansion to be finished being built.

Beyonce and husband Jay-Z bought what is known as the Pond House in The Hamptons in fall of 2017. And they splashed out a huge $26 million for the mansion. The home sits across 12,000 square foot and has 7 bedrooms and 7 and a half bathrooms. And of course, Queen Bee wouldn’t do things by halves. She has had marble imported from Verona, Italy for her bathrooms and hand-milled wood-work throughout the home. If the 12,000 isn’t enough, the property also features a 1,200 square foot guest house, complete with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and living room. The living room in the main house has 30 foot high ceilings, which overlooks the pond and allows for beautiful sunset watching.

Honolulu House

In the mid-1800's, Michigan Supreme Court justice Abner Pratt briefly served as a U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Hawaii; when he returned to his home in Marshall, Mich., he set to work designing a home reminiscent of a Hawaiian palace, complete with an enormous front porch and an interior splashed with tropical murals. The unusual home is now a museum and headquarters for the Marshall Historical Society.  Tour info here.

Meyer May House

In 1908, a prominent Grand Rapids clothier commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design this home in the city's Heritage Hill neighborhood. The house, now owned by the furniture company Steelcase, is hailed as an exceptional example of "Prairie School" design, an architectural style marked by prairie-horizon-invoking horizontal lines: in windows, eaves, and in the case of the Meyer May House, even strips of gold glass inlaid into the grout of the home's brick fireplaces. The Whitney

Nineteenth-century lumber baron David Whitney Jr. was once the richest man in Detroit—when adjusted for inflation, this 1894-built home would have cost more than $9 million today. This rose-colored granite mansion has 52 rooms, Tiffany stained-glass windows, oak and mahogany woodwork, and a grand hall entrance with a gorgeous bronze balustraded staircase ( see inside here ). Today the mansion is home to the Whitney restaurant, which offers " Champagne tours " of the home.

Saarinen House

This home on the campus of Cranbrook Academy of Art is considered the Art Deco masterpiece of Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen, who designed it as a residence and studio for himself and his wife, sculptor and textile artist Loja Saarinen. The jaw-dropping interior features the family's furnishings, including original pieces designed and created by the Saarinens and their son, Eero, who'd grow up to become a master of American 20th-century architecture.  Tour info here.

Aden B. Dow House

Alden B. Dow apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright before making his own mark on American architecture. His 1936-built Midland home exemplifies his particular style of blending design with the natural landscape, as the home is practically hugged by a pond, creating beautiful light and a "floating" conference room that sits 18 inches below the water level. Renowned Detroit architect Albert Kahn designed this Grosse Pointe Shores mansion for Edsel Ford (son of auto titan Henry Ford) and Eleanor Ford, Edsel's wife. The Lake St. Clair manse, finished in 1927, was modeled after English Cotswold cottages ( see inside here ) and set on a gorgeous piece of property landscaped by prominent American landscape architect Jens Jensen. Cranbrook House & Gardens

Albert Kahn was also tapped to design this English Arts-and-Crafts-inspired home for Michigan publishing power-couple George Booth (of Booth Publishing Co.) and Ellen Warren Scripps, daughter of the founder of the Detroit News. The Bloomfield Hills home was finished in 1908 ( see inside here ), though two more decades would be spent furnishing it with exquisite art pieces and commissioned works from the American Arts and Crafts movement. Castle Farms

This sprawling stone manor has an eclectic history, ranging from a bucolic early-20th-century dairy farm to a 1970's rock 'n' roll venue. Modeled after castles in Normandy, France, the place was originally built in 1918 by Albert Loeb, then the vice president of Sears, Roebuck and Company, as a showcase farm for prized livestock and his company's farm equipment. Castle Farms is now primarily an event space, with historic guided tours  available.

Turner-Dodge House

When this Classic Revival-style home ( more photos here ) was built in 1858 for James and Marion Turner, two of the Capitol City's first residents, it was the largest building in Lansing — until, of course, the Capitol was finished 20 years later. The Hoatson House

Thomas H. Hoatson made his fortune with an Arizona-based mining company, but he chose to build his grand estate on the Keweenaw Peninsula, where he'd graduated high school and briefly worked in the mines of Calumet. His exquisite four-story, 13,000-square-foot Classic Revival home was finished in 1907 and included details like hand-painted murals, elephant-leather walls, a 1,200-square-foot wraparound tile porch, and other luxuries. Smith House

Famously called "my little gem" by its architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, this Bloomfield Hills home was designed for a pair of Detroit Public School teachers who were determined to live in a Wright house, even with their middle-class budget. The 1,800-square-foot home was finished in 1950 and had features typical of Wright's so-called Usonian style: small, single-story, L-shaped homes with heating provided by passive-solar design and radiant-floor technology. Meadowbrook Hall & Gardens

This glorious 1929-built Tudor-revival manse in Rochester Hills was originally the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of early Detroit auto titan John Dodge, and her second husband, Alfred Wilson. The 110-room estate is filled with rich, original furnishings ( see inside here ) and is flanked by meticulously maintained gardens, all of which may be toured. Tour info here .

W.K. Kellogg Manor House

Breakfast cereal inventor W.K. Kellogg wanted a summer residence not far from his company's operations in Battle Creek, so he had this stately Tudor built on 32 acres overlooking nearby Gull Lake in 1926. Custom details included light fixtures and sconces crafted by a prominent Grand Rapids sculptor; a hand-carved oak staircase that took two years to complete; and a repeating motif of the number seven, Kellogg's favorite number. The home now serves as a Michigan State University biological station and conference center, with an exquisite interior recreated by referring to Kellogg's saved Marshall Fields receipts.  Guided and self-guided tours are available.

Thompson House

Considered to be one of the finest examples of Queen Anne architecture in the entire state, this beauty in Hudson, Mich. was built for banker Gamaliel Ingham Thompson. The house remained in the Thompson family for four generations, with the structure's original features unchanged. It now serves as a museum and heritage center, not only for its architectural significance but for the family's extensive art collection. Tour info available online .

Henry Ford Estate (Fair Lane Mansion)

This 31,000-square-foot Dearborn mansion known as Fair Lane was the final home for Henry and Clara Ford. The house, situated along the Rouge River, blended Midwestern Prairie School and English country manor styles, and the sprawling property included everything from a hydroelectric dam to a pint-sized farm built for the enjoyment of the Fords' grandchildren. Inventor Thomas Edison visited so frequently he had his own suite of rooms here. The home is currently undergoing painstaking restoration , and is therefore closed to interior tours, but meanwhile the grounds are open on weekdays at no charge.  Details here.
