A love of nature permeates every level of Norwegian society, from the freedom to camp on public land (known as the right to roam) to the old Norwegian joke about being born with skis on their feet. A history of farming and an enduring Viking culture that valued strength and hardiness has produced a society unified around values like independence, an active life and simple pleasures.

Speaking of simple pleasures, if you’re in Norway you’ll come across a phrase that has no direct translation in English: ‘koselig’ (pronounced coosh-ly). While ‘koselig’ means something different to each person, it’s best understood as the mental feeling of coziness and contentment that accompanies wholesome activities, like if a happy sigh was a feeling. You may also come across the term ‘friluftsliv’, which refers to the pure delight of splendid natural scenery, fresh air and an active lifestyle. This is perhaps why the country continuously tops the ‘world’s happiest’ lists.

Travelers may find that the locals seem a little shy or reserved at first. Generally speaking, small talk isn’t as big a part of social interaction as it is in places like the USA, Australia and Canada. Don’t take it personally – once you get to know a local, you’ll likely find them as helpful and kind as people anywhere.

History and government

The first people moved here some 10,000 years ago after rising temperatures created the perfect conditions for fishing communities to hunt the coastline’s blubber-rich marine life.

While the Viking Age is the most famous part of Norway’s history, it was actually a fairly short period. Scandinavian warriors traveled around the world to plunder, colonize and build alliances from around AD800 to AD1060. As a result of these invasions into   Scotland , England and Normandy, Saint Olaf unified the country for the first time under Christianity.

In the 14th century Norway was joined with   Denmark   through a royal marriage. Danish became the official language although Norway retained a strong sense of national identity. It was then given to   Sweden   in the early 19th century before finally achieving independence in 1905.

Twentieth century

Norway declared itself neutral during WWII but that didn’t stop the Nazis invading and occupying the country as a strategic military stronghold. Norway quickly recovered once the war ended in terms of infrastructure and economy, though the head of the government-in-exile did not. Vidkun Quisling, who encouraged Norwegians to submit to Nazi rule, was executed for treason in 1945. Fun fact: the word ‘quisling’ is still a colloquial term for ‘traitor’ in Norway.

Perhaps the most significant event in Norway during the 20th century was the discovery of a wealth of natural resources in the late 1960s. The extraction and export of oil and gas quickly became Norway’s dominant industry and continues to provide most of the country’s considerable wealth.

Norway today enjoys a high standard of living with political power generally held by either center-left or center-right parties. The country is renowned worldwide for its free and independent press and strong democracy.

Eating and drinking

Traditional Norwegian cuisine is simple, hearty and designed to keep you warm during those freezing winters. While the classic meat and potato offerings may not be the most exciting, they are plenty satisfying, and you’ll find diverse cuisine options from around the world in Norway’s larger cities. Many travelers to Norway are concerned about how much money they will have to budget for meals during their trip, and while it’s true that eating and drinking in Norway can be expensive compared to other parts of Europe, there are a few things you can do to make your meals more affordable.

Budget-friendly tips for eating and drinking in Norway

Picnic like a local

Eating outside in parks and squares is incredibly popular during the summer in Norway. You’ll even see locals with single-use barbecues grilling meat in the open during the warmer months, which is totally legal. These disposable grills are cheap, but they aren’t great for the environment, so we recommend stocking up on fruit, vegetables, lunch meats and bread for an eco-friendly picnic.  

Drink the tap water

With some of the best-tasting tap water in the world, there’s no need to splurge on bottled stuff. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up each day. It’s better for your wallet and the environment.

Steer clear of sweets

A huge sugar tax means buying chocolate or candy is expensive everywhere in Norway. Junk heads may want to shore up some luggage space for treats, or simply prepare mentally.

Must-try food and drink in Norway

• Kjottkaker Basically a fried meatball, but flatter and with no breadcrumbs. Kjottkaker are ubiquitous in Norway so you won’t have to look to hard to find them. They’re delicious, filling and widely available – what more could you want? 
• Farikal Norway’s national dish is a perfect warmer for freezing winters (or even chilly spring or autumn nights). Simmered with cabbage and mild spices, pieces of lamb or mutton become fall-off-the-bone soft in this tasty and rustic meal.
• Linie Aquavit This Norwegian brand of aquavit – a botanical vodka – is aged in oak casks during a cruise. Here’s the reasoning given on their website: ‘It all started back in 1805, when the Norwegian trade family, Lysholm, shipped potato aquavit to the East Indies. Here people were totally uninterested in buying it, so the aquavit was sailed back to Norway. On its arrival in 1807, it was discovered that the sea voyage had vastly improved the taste.’
• Brown cheese Made by simmering a by-product of the cheese-making process (whey), then sliced and served on bread or crackers, sweet and salty brown cheese is an iconic lunch or breakfast accompaniment.

Plant-based options

Vegetarians and vegans will have nothing to be concerned about in cities like Oslo and Bergen, but we recommend stocking up on food in a supermarket if you’re traveling outside of the major cities, just in case you have trouble finding options on restaurant menus. Traveling with a local who speaks the language makes this all a lot easier. If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend plant-based choices.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with   Sweden ,   Russia   and   Finland , Norway occupies the northern corner of the Scandinavian Peninsula, with the North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea hugging the rugged northern, southern and western sides of the country.

Swaths of Norway sit within the Arctic Circle, including the popular mainland city of Tromso and the Svalbard archipelago. Due to its proximity to the   Arctic , large parts of Norway experience a subarctic marine climate, with cold winters and cool summers, as well as midnight sun and the Northern Lights.

Norway possesses more than 50,000 islands. These protect the rest of the country from North Atlantic storms, which is useful given the country’s proximity to the   Arctic . With a total of less than 10 percent of the land suitable for growing crops, things are already tough enough. 

The country's western fjord system is perhaps its most well-known landmark – or series of more than 1000 landmarks, to be accurate. Formed by retreating or melting glaciers, these deep ravines are now a symbol of Norway’s beauty and the country’s leading tourist attraction.

In a country where the great outdoors is a way of life, you’ll find less opportunities to buy trinkets and mementos in Norway than in other places. That being said, there are a couple of keepsakes and gifts to look out for while you’re there, namely items that represent the weird and wonderful folklore and traditions of this Scandinavian nation.

Solje jewelry

This silver jewelry is meant to keep the wearer safe from evil and monsters. Traditional solje jewelry comes in the form of brooches and necklaces that can be attached to bunad (folk) costumes. Does it work? Well, do you see any trolls around? Exactly.

Items adorned with rosemaling – delicate, floral folk art – make perfect gifts or decorative souvenirs. Practiced since the mid-18th century, rosemaling emerged when poor, traveling artists and muralists from Norway encountered the elaborate styles popular in Italy and France at the time.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of trolls in Norwegian (and wider Scandinavian) culture and folklore. These humanoid, mountain or forest-dwelling monsters are sometimes huge and sometimes tiny, but almost always up to some kind of mischief and trickery. Troll dolls, troll mugs, troll tea towels, troll underwear (why not?) and more are for sale throughout the country. It may seem a little touristy, but even locals keep figurines of these hideous creatures around the house for luck.

Festivals and events

Did you really think that the descendants of Vikings wouldn't know how to hold a celebration? Thankfully, modern Norwegians are more inclined to celebrate things like music and art, rather than seafaring raids, and these are some of the best:

Oya Festival

A summer festival that usually takes places in Oslo, Oya features artists – both local and international – from a number of genres performing in the great outdoors. This is a classic European music festival with a sustainable twist – you can dance to music powered by renewable energy while munching street food served on edible, biodegradable plates. 

Northern Lights Festival

Listen to compositional music performed in Tromso’s historic and modern architectural wonders. Timed to coincide with the Northern Lights (hence the name), this mid- to late-winter festival is a stalwart of Tromso’s impressive cultural calendar.

Bergenfest 

Bergenfest   is a five-day open-air music festival located in the stone walls of Bergenhaus Fortress in the UNESCO World-Heritage listed city of Bergen. It's one of Norway’s oldest, biggest and boldest music festivals featuring an eclectic lineup of electronic, pop, country, experimental, jazz, blues, rock and more.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Norway?

When deciding the best time for you to visit Norway, the main factors to consider are your tolerance for the cold and what you want to see most.

While the joys of the high summer are self-evident – long days! Mild weather! – both international and local tourists flock to Norway’s fjords and hiking trails during June and July. If you want to hike all day, stay up all night (because the sun pretty much doesn’t set) and don’t mind rubbing shoulders with other travelers, this could be the ideal time for you.

Winter in Norway is cold. November, December and January see average daylight temperatures between 30°F and 39°F (-1°C and 4°C) with the sun setting in the afternoon. That said, this is the only time of the year that you can glimpse the stunning Northern Lights. Even if you don’t see Aurora Borealis (you’ll have more luck the further north you go), the festivity of Christmas and the snow-covered mountains make winter a magical season to visit.

Spring and autumn are both crisp in terms of temperature. Think about 50°F (10°C) in May and September. These shoulder seasons may offer a good way to split the difference between winter and summer if you can handle a little bit of cold and a little bit of a crowd, but not too much of either. Just be aware that spring is the rainy season and pack accordingly.

Do I need a visa to travel to Norway?

Visas for Denmark , Norway,   Sweden   and   Finland  are not required for passport holders of the European Union,   Australia ,   New Zealand , the   USA   and   Canada   who plan to visit for 90 days or less. Please note that random passport checks occasionally happen at European borders and you will need at least six months validity on your passport to enter the country overland.

All other nationalities should check with the Norwegian embassy or consulate closest to them for information.

Is tipping customary in Norway?

Part of what contributes to Norway’s reputation as an expensive nation for visitors (but not locals) is that most workers, including waitstaff, are paid union-approved liveable wages. 

Because of this, tipping in Norway is not commonplace and is generally left up to the discretion of the customer. If the service in a mid- to high-end restaurant is particularly good, feel free to round up the bill.

What is the internet access like in Norway?

Internet access in Norway is fantastic, with almost 100 percent of the country having access to a connection. In Norway's major cities and towns, travelers will be able to access the internet on their phones with global roaming switched on (be careful of charges) and at cafes and free wi-fi hot spots. Even more remote and rural areas will have internet availability, though in towns like Tromso and Trondheim it may be a slow connection.

Can I use my cell phone while in Norway?

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Norway. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Norway?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the standard in Norway.

Can I drink the water in Norway?

Yes, you can drink the tap water in Norway. In fact, it’s some of the best-tasting tap water in the world so pack a reusable bottle and take advantage. It’s always considered safe to drink unless otherwise marked.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Norway?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops and hotels. Smaller vendors may not accept credit cards, so carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in Norway?

ATMs are commonly found in Norway's cities and urban areas. Remote regions will have less ATM availability, so prepare accordingly before traveling away from cities.

What is the weather like in Norway?

The climate in Norway is noticeably warmer than what would otherwise be expected at such a high latitude because of the Gulf Stream. Summer temperatures can reach up to 86°F, even in northern areas, but only for limited periods. The length of the winter and amount of snow varies around the country. There is more snow in the north and the winters are dark; on the southern and western coasts, winters are moderate and rainy, while further inland the temperature can get below -13°F. March, April, October and November tend to be the rainiest months. Snow usually starts to fall in October or November in the northern areas (and in higher altitudes) and generally melts by the end of April. The Northern Lights are visible from parts of Norway, with September to April usually presenting the optimal conditions for viewing.

Is Norway a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2009 and citizens have had the legal right to self determine their gender since 2016. Norway has strong anti-discrimination laws regarding LGBTQIA+ individuals and public opinion on LGBTQIA+ people is overwhelmingly positive.

You can find visible queer scenes in all the midsize to large cities. Oslo’s is the biggest and the official Oslo tourism website even has a section dedicated to   queer spaces and events   in the city. In other large cities, like Bergen, you’ll find no shortage of LGBTQIA+ friendly spaces, though fewer that cater to specific sexualities and genders.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Norway accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Norway is a fairly accessible destination for people with restricted mobility and other disabilities and is actively working to be more accessible every day. In general, travelers with mobility or other restrictions should be aware that the weather can adversely affect accessible travel in Norway. During December, January and February, snow and ice can make even the most well-maintained sidewalk difficult to navigate. 

New buildings are required to be accessible to wheelchair users, however many older buildings may not be accessible. Public buildings like museums that are not totally accessible will often have assistance buttons at their entrances that direct a member of staff to help you enter the building.  Public transport is a mixed bag. While new trams, trains and stations are accessible to wheelchair users, some are not. If you’re traveling on a regional train,   Tourism Norway   recommends calling the train carrier at least 24 hours before your journey to ensure you will be accommodated. The boats that we use for cruising fjords in Norway are accessible to wheelchair users.

Metro trains, trams and buses in Norway are outfitted with PA systems that can be of assistance to travelers with restricted vision. Many trains, buses and trams in major cities will also have screens helpful to travelers with restricted hearing. Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should consider bringing a stash of extra batteries or familiarizing themselves with the Norwegian equivalent of the batteries their devices need.

Is it expensive to travel in Norway?

The perception of Norway as a prohibitively expensive country stops a lot of folks from booking a journey, despite how badly they want to see the country’s incredible landscapes.

For locals, the cost of most goods and services aren’t that expensive relative to wages. However, there is no denying that Norway is more expensive for travelers than many destinations in Europe and will require more thoughtful budgeting than a trip to, say, Romania.

Prices of basic items like metro tickets, beer and takeaway meals will likely be higher than you would normally pay at home. There are, however, ways of making a trip to Norway a little easier on your bank account. Shopping at supermarkets for lunch instead of dining out, traveling with a reusable water bottle and limiting your alcohol consumption are just a few.

Our trips in Norway tend to be light on included meals so that you can decide whether you’d prefer to grab a supermarket sandwich for lunch or sit down to eat somewhere. You’ll also have the benefit of a local leader to help you find deals and a well thought out itinerary, which means less chance for expensive impulse buys. 

Embracing friluftsliv, a Norwegian word that loosely translates as a way of life that prioritizes time spent in nature, is the best way to reduce the cost of your trip. Basically, if you’re after an adventure where you can eat world-class cuisine all day and party all night, Norway might not be the right destination for you right now. But if you’re interested in unforgettable views, catching sight of the Northern Lights or hiking under the midnight sun, Norway may just be the best travel experience you’ve ever had.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. The weather in Oslo is much different than the weather in the mountains and even in Bergen. Just be prepared, and you will enjoy any weather.

Norwegians love their seafood. You will be able to try all types of fish prepared in many different ways. Don’t worry about it being too spicy, Norwegian food is light on the spice and heavier on the herbs and dairy.

3. What is the best month to go to Norway?

The best time to visit Norway depends on what you want to do. The summer months, June to August, provide longer days and even the famous midnight sun. This makes summertime ideal for hiking, cycling or cruising.

The ‘shoulder season’ of May and September is still pretty warm by Scandinavian standards. Visit then and you can expect fewer tourists and vibrantly coloured scenery.

Wintertime brings longer nights and colder temperatures--sometimes downright chilly! Of course, this means the potential for snow. And in northern Norway, your chances of spotting the gorgeous northern lights increase when days are shorter.

4. Where can we see northern lights in Norway?

The best places to see the northern lights in Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes and above the Arctic Circle, including the Lofoten islands. Your chances increase depending on your distance from city light pollution and the month you visit.

5. When is the best time to see the northern lights in Norway?

In Norway your chances of seeing the northern lights are greatest between September and April, with October through March being the best months.

Dark nights are essential if you wish to see the northern lights, aka the aurora borealis. This means the summer months of May to August are largely ruled out, as the sun may not set at all in northern areas of Norway during this season.

6. Which is best to tour Norway – by rail, cruise or self-drive?

This is really down to personal preference, but let us give you some pointers.

Self-drive is good because you can travel at your own pace, go where you choose (within reason of course) and stop whenever you like. This is great for photographers, honeymooners and free spirits. Also, parents: self-drive is great for both snack and bathroom breaks.

Rail travel naturally involves a certain commitment to timetables. But taking a train is a very convenient way to travel. Everyone on board is free to enjoy the views along all the scenic routes, as none of your group is at the wheel.

Coastal cruises and ferries give you a unique perspective, admiring the fjords while gliding along them. Again, you have schedules to follow, but everyone can freely enjoy the sights.

Hopefully these tips should give you an idea of what you’d prefer. You can also narrow your choice by using our tour search filters to find your must-see attractions. 7. What is a self-guided tour?

A self-guided tour (or independent tour) is one where you receive an itinerary, travel information and amenities such as accommodation arranged by a travel agent. You will not have a tour group or hired guide, but you will have the added freedom to explore in your own time.

Nordic Visitor has a travel consultant available 24/7 by phone in case something goes amiss, so you’re getting the best of both worlds: the chance to roam as you like, but a person to steer you if you feel lost or unsure.

One popular version of self-guided tours is self-drive , which of course includes car rental as an important amenity. However, compared to Iceland, the railway and ferry networks in Norway provide you with an added variety of self-guided transport options.

8. Can I choose the arrival date?

In most cases, yes. Many of our packages are flexible, with daily departures. The notable exceptions are our guided small group tour packages, which have pre-set start dates.

9. When should I book my flight tickets?

We advise that you book your package first to secure your tour. It may be worth checking potential flights times and prices first, but be aware some airlines and flight booking websites raise their prices between visits, so remember to do research using Private or Incognito mode.

Once your tour is confirmed by email, purchase your flights. If you have missed out on flights, please get in touch with us to change the dates of your tour.

10. What should I pack for my trip?

We always advise our guests to dress sensibly throughout the year. Many of Norway’s attractions are outside and the weather is typically Scandinavian. That’s why we suggest packing clothes you can layer, choosing thinner items for summer and thicker for winter.

7 Day Norway Itinerary: How to Spend One Week in Norway

N orway is maybe the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. It’s full of mountains and waterfalls and fjords along with delicious food and incredible cities. If you’re looking to plan a trip to Scandinavia, this 7 day Norway itinerary will help you easily see some of the best parts of Norway.

This is an itinerary you won’t need a car for, so it’s super easy for every traveler, especially if you are hesitant about renting a car in another country.

Keep in mind, Norway is a HUGE country with TONS to see though. Seven days in Norway won’t let you see everything, but it is a manageable trip that will let you see some of the best and most popular parts of Norway!

Why Visit Norway?

Norway is a country on so many people’s bucket lists. And for good reason! It is a beautiful country with breathtaking mountains and fjords, refreshing forests, and dramatic landscapes. Here are some reasons you may want to visit Norway:

• To stand on top of some of the most beautiful mountains (and you don’t even have to hike to them!)
• To take a bucket-list worthy fjord tour that I promise you will remember forever!
• To go to some amazing museums where you can learn about Vikings, see some of the most famous art in the world, and even let your kids play.
• To enjoy some of the most photogenic (i.e. Instragrammable, because let’s just be honest here) architecture and landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Norway

Every season in Norway can be a good one to visit, even winter! Each season is just very different.

But I think the best time to visit Norway is summer. You’ll get the best weather, with mild temperatures and less rain. Plus the sun hardly sets at all, which gives you extended daylight hours to enjoy all Norway has to offer!

When we visited in the summer, temperatures hovered around 60 degrees. So we needed light jackets, but we were perfectly comfortable!

Getting to Norway

If you arrive at the Oslo Airport, you’ll need to take a train into the city center. Oslo Gardermoen airport is about 35 km (or 22 miles) northeast of Oslo. But it’s super easy to take a train to the Central Train Station in downtown Oslo.

Likewise, the Bergen airport is several miles from the city center, but you can easily take the light rail into the city. It takes about 45 minutes or so. You can also choose to take the bus, which takes about 30 minutes.

If you are coming from a nearby country, you may choose to arrive by train. In that case, you should arrive at the central train station for each city, and from there it should be easy to walk or find public transportation to your accomodations.

Getting Around Norway

If you wanted to, you could definitely rent a car to get around Norway. However, it is NOT necessary! Norway has a fantastic public transportation system, with trains that can take you from city to city as well as around the city you are staying in.

On our trip, we didn’t rent a car at all and instead relied on trains and buses. And while going back to Norway and renting a car to drive around ourselves is definitely on my bucket list, we didn’t have any issues or feel like we missed anything by just taking public transportation!

Plus, since we bought the Oslo Pass and Bergen Card , all of our transportation (except for our longer train ride between Bergen and Oslo) was included!

7 Day Norway Itinerary Summary

Before we dive into the details of each day, let’s take a look a summary of this 7 day Norway Itinerary.

7 Day Norway Itinerary

Now let’s dive into the details of this itinerary! We’ve broken each section up into morning, afternoon, and evening to help you plan each day.

Also feel free to switch days around based on what works best for your schedule or even what the weather looks like! I mean, you don’t want to be going up mountains on the rainy day and touring museums on the sunny day!

One note: We did choose to start this itinerary in Oslo for a reason. Mostly because you know that travel advice to go from low to high or budget to luxury when moving resorts? I’m going to apply it to cities here too. Oslo is great and fine and good. And there are some incredible things to do here. But Bergen is one of our favorite cities ever, so it’s the best note to end on! BUT if it works better for you to reverse that order, definitely do it!

Day 1: Arrive in Oslo

Day 1 morning: get settled.

We’re going to assume you’re arriving to Oslo in the morning, so some of your morning time will obviously be taken up with travel logistics. We won’t pack a lot into the first morning, because you’ll want to find your bearings.

Once you get into the city, head straight to the Oslo Opera House . This is one of the most iconic sites in Oslo. It sits right on the water and you can WALK on the roof, which is pretty cool. I think this is a great place to start out because it’s a quick stop and it gives you some beautiful views, which I always appreciate after traveling.

Day 1 Afternoon: MUNCH Museum

Grab some lunch from one of many restaurants in the area near the Opera House and then head to the MUNCH Museum !

This new museum opened in 2021. It featured the works of famed Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, but it also has galleries featuring other artists and an exhibit about the life of Edvard Munch.

There are so many great things about this museum:

• Bright spaces and large galleries.
• Incredible views of Oslo!
• Fun, interactive displays and activities for kids in almost every different gallery space!
• You can see different versions of the famous painting, The Scream , here.

And if you bought the Oslo Pass , you can use it for admission into MUNCH.

Day 1 Evening: Frogner Park

Hop on the cable car near MUNCH at Dronningens gate (you’ll walk back past the Opera House) and get off at Vigelandsparken to go to Frogner Park . This is a large park in a central part of Oslo. It’s also where you’ll find the Vigeland Sculpture Park , a free outdoor museum featuring the work of Gustav Vigeland.

This is a great place to spend an evening walking the beautiful grounds and seeing some incredible (and free!) art!

Day 2: Explore Oslo

Day 2 morning: oslo’s royal history.

Let’s start day two of our 7 days in Norway visiting the royals! Well…kind of.

Start the morning off at Akershus Fortress where you can visit Akershus Castle . This complex was built in the late 1200s and has been used as a fortress and a royal residence. Today, you can tour the rooms and see the Royal Mausoleum.

While Akershus Castle is the main draw, Akershus Fortress is home to other Oslo attractions as well. You can visit the Norway Resistance Museum , which tells the story of Norway’s occupation and resistance during WWII. Or you can go to the Armed Forces Museum , which has exhibits of Norwegian military history from the Viking Age to modern day.

While entrance into the grounds of Akershus Fortress are free, you will need to use either an Oslo Pass or pay an admission fee for the museums.

After your time at Akershus, head to The Royal Palace . It’s about a 20 minute walk, or you can take the bus from Wessels plass to Nationaltheatret.

You can tour the inside of the Royal Palace from late June to mid-August, usually. But most of the time you’ll just stop by and see the outside of it. Depending on how long your morning took, you may decide to stick around and see the changing of the guard, which takes place at 1:30 p.m. each day.

Day 2 Afternoon: Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum

Note: The Holmenkollen Ski Museum is closed for renovations until the end of 2023. Until then, head to some of Oslo’s other museums like the National Gallery or the Nobel Peace Center.

For the afternoon, take the train to Holmenkollen to go to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum . (Remember, your Olso Pass gets you free access to local transportation including the regional trains like this one!). To get there, you’ll take the train from the Nationaltheatret station to the Holmenkollen station.

Pro Tip: To find the train station, you’ll go under the road from the park behind the Nationaltheatret. It’s a little hidden if you aren’t looking for it!

Once you get to Holmenkollen, it’s about a 15 minute walk (and kind of uphill, so be prepared!) to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Museum.

This ski jump has been operating since 1892, although of course it has been rebuilt since then. Inside the Ski Museum you’ll find exhibits about the history of skiing and the ski jump as well as the cutest indoor children’s play area I’ve ever seen.

Then you can take an elevator to the top of the ski jump for some incredible views!

Day 2 Evening: Oslo Street Food

For the evening, head to one of Oslo’s popular food halls, Oslo Street Food . Here you can get dinner from a variety of different food stalls that have food from around the world. Options include burgers, tacos, Hawaiian food, Korean food, and more. This is a popular place to go, so it will be busy! So find some great food and enjoy the atmosphere.

Day 3: Tour Oslo’s Bygdøy Peninsula

Day 3 morning: norsk folkemuseum.

For most of our third day in Norway, we’re going to enjoy the museums on Oslo’s Bygdøy Peninsula, which are some of the best museums in Oslo . To get there, you can easily take a bus from several spots in the city center.

The Norsk Folkemuseum , also known at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, is one of my favorite museums in Oslo. It’s a step back in time, as you can tour historic buildings in their open-air space and enjoy exhibits on Norwegian history in several indoor spaces.

Really though, my favorite thing about this museum is that you get to enjoy some peaceful nature in the middle of Norway’s capital city !

There are several highlights to see here:

• 160 historic buildings in the outdoor open-air museum.
• Gol Stave church, which is a great, easily accessible (as in, you don’t have to travel far) place to see a traditional Stave church.
• Wessels gate 15 Apartment House with rooms decorated from different time periods.
• Old Town area with buildings from Oslo, including old shops.
• Seter Summer Dairy Farm with fam animals.

This really is a beautiful museum, and is especially a great place to take kids because there’s so much outdoor space for them to run around in. Plus, on the weekends they have demonstrations that kids will enjoy like baking traditional lefse, seeing the blacksmith at work, and listening to fairytales.

While you are touring the museum, you can also enjoy lunch here at the Kafe Arkadia.

Admission to this museum is free with the Oslo Pass.

Day 3 Afternoon: Bygdøy Ship Museums

Spend your afternoon touring the rest of Bygdøy’s famous museums that all revolve of sea exploration. There are three you can choose from, and honestly, I recommend going to as many as you can. None of them are particularly huge museums, so you can spend an hour or two in each one and be able to see so much! Plus an Oslo Pass will give you free admission to all of them.

Bonus: They are all within walking distance of each other!

• Fram Museum — This museum is all about polar exploration. Climb aboard the Fram ship, learn about the race to reach the poles, go inside a sub-zero room, and test your skills as an explorer in interactive elements. This museum is really so much fun for the whole family!
• Kon-Tiki Museum — This is a smaller museum than the Fram Museum, and is all about the Kon-Tiki expedition where a Norwegian man build a balsa wood raft and sailed it with a small crew across the Pacific. The backstory of the expedition and the expedition itself are fascinating! I highly recommend this museum.
• Norwegian Maritime Museum — If you are interested in general maritime history, this is a great museum to go to! Here you can see different ships from Norway’s seafaring history, view an exhibit about what a sailor’s life has been like throughout history, and see a Viking boat being reconstructed.

Note: Normally the Viking Ship Museum is another popular museum to visit on Bygdøy. However, this museum is currently closed as they build the new Museum of the Viking Age which will open in 2026.

Day 3 Evening: Vippa

Take the ferry back across the fjord and then spend your evening at another popular Oslo food court: Vippa . This food court is located right on the Oslo fjord, which means you can enjoy your food and some great outdoor space at the same time. Here you’ll be able to find things like Syrian street food, Polish Pirogis, Chinese food, and more. They frequently switch up the food offerings, so you should find different options all the time!

This is a perfect way to end your time in Oslo — eating some great food and admiring the Oslo fjord. (And knowing that even more spectacular fjords are in your future!)

Day 4: Take the Train from Oslo to Bergen

We’re up to day four of our seven day Norway itinerary, and today you’ll be spending most of it traveling. Which can sound dull, but I promise you this mode of travel IS NOT.

Day 4 Morning & Afternoon: Train to Bergen

Today, take the train from Oslo to Bergen . This train, known as the Bergensbanen , is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. And I have to say, I agree!

You’ll start in Oslo and travel out into its suburbs before climbing mountains that still sometimes have snow in the summer, passing through forests, and getting a preview of some of Norway’s best fjords.

The train journey itself takes about 7 hours. But it doesn’t seem that long at all!

Besides the most amazing scenery, there are some other great perks to this train journey:

• A family car, with a cushioned play area kids can play and climb in.
• A café car that offers food and drink. I got a warm sandwich here and honestly though it was pretty great!
• Wi-Fi, although it can be a bit spotty in some areas.
• Lots of tunnels, which are just fun!

Day 4 Evening: Dinner in Bergen’s Fish Market

Depending on when you leave Oslo, you’ll probably get into Bergen in the late afternoon. Once you get settled, head to the central area of Bergen and find some dinner at the Bergen Fish Market .

Bergen has long been known for their fishing history, and this area in the center part of town has several restaurants you can choose from. During the summer, there are also outdoor stands that offer different menus.

Then find a bench along the water and take a deep breath of fresh Bergen air and enjoy your evening people-watching and boat-watching!

Day 5 Morning: Bryggen

Start your first morning in Bergen with a stop at it’s most photographed area — Bryggen . These wooden buildings were once used as harbor warehouses and office buildings, but are now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

And while this place can get super crowded later in the afternoon and evening, I love exploring it in the morning before the crowds are out! Be sure to go down the different alleyways and walk along the wooden planks. The architecture of this area has so much character.

Plus, morning is a great time to get photographs of beautiful Bryggen without the crowds!

Day 5 Afternoon: Mount Ulriken

Grab an early lunch, and then head to Ulriken643 to go up to the top of Mount Ulriken . You’ll have to take a bus to get here and then walk about 10 minute (kind of uphill), but I promise it is worth it!

This cable car will take you to the top of Mount Ulriken, where you’ll find amazing views of Bergen and the surrounding area. There are all kinds of hiking trails and places to explore up here. Although my favorite honestly might just be standing at the top of the mountain and looking at all the other mountains surrounding you. You can even see the lakes on top of some of them!

Ulriken is an incredible place and I definitely recommend making the time for it, even if getting to the cable car is a little out of the way.

If you are really up for an adventure, you can make a whole afternoon of hiking here too! You can hike from Ulriken to our next stop, Fløyen, across the mountaintops! It’s a medium-difficultly hike with some challenging areas and takes about 5+ hours. (And be sure to hike safely !)

Day 5 Evening: Mount Fløyen

End your day at my favorite spot in Bergen: Mount Fløyen ! This is another mountain in Bergen that offers amazing scenery and views of Bergen.

It’s a bit easier to get here than Ulriken. You can take the Fløbanen funicular, which departs just a couple blocks from the city center.

The terrain here is also very different from Ulriken. This mountain is forested, which gives you some really fun areas to explore. There are also fun things like a several playground areas, a troll forest, and ice cream stand, and a café.

You can grab dinner here, and then spend your evening exploring the forests and finding a spot at the overlook to watch the sun dip down. (Although, depending on what time of year you are visiting, it might not actually go down before you need to head to bed!)

Day 6 All Day: Fjord Tour

Bergen is known as “The Gateway to the Fjords” because it’s a great home base for seeing some of Norway’s most spectacular fjords in a day trip.

There are lots of different tours you can take to see the fjords, but we recommend the Norway in a Nutshell tour .

This tour is a self-guided tour that takes you through multiple modes of transportation (seriously, a train to a bus to a boat to another train, etc.) to popular fjords. You can choose to either book all of these tickets on your own, or pay a higher prices to have Norway in a Nutshell book the tickets for you .

When they book the tickets for you, they make sure all of your timings are worked out perfectly and they give you step-by-step instructions on how to follow the itinerary. Honestly, if it’s your first time in Norway or you feel remotely nervous about managing your own travel plans, I think this is the way to go!

This tour will take you through some of the most amazing places:

• The popular Nærøyfjord , which has to be one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.
• Aurlandsfjord , which is a lot wider and definitely different, but still beautiful.
• Flåm , a small town situated at the base of the fjords
• The historic Flåm Railway , which takes you through the mountains and has you stop at an incredible waterfall.

I mean, did you really go to Norway if you didn’t see the fjords? So definitely make sure you set aside a day during your 7 days in Norway for a full day-trip of fjord-touring.

Day 7: Explore Bergen’s Museums

It’s your last full day in Norway, and since yesterday was so busy, we’ll take it a bit easier today with some of Bergen’s best museums.

Day 7 Morning: Gamle Bergen Museum

Start your morning off at the Old Bergen Museum (Gamle Bergen). You can take the bus from Bryggen and get off at the Gamle Bergen stop. Then it’s just a short walk under the road to the museum.

The Old Bergen Museum is an open-air museum with houses from…well, Old Bergen. They have been reconstructed to create a small town that shows what life was like in Bergen in the 1800s. You’ll find houses from community leaders, an old grocery store, and historic actors that tell you about Old Bergen.

Plus, this spot has some beautiful views out into the fjord. Besides all the things we learned about Old Bergen, I really loved this place because it felt so peaceful!

Admission to this museum is free with the Bergen Card.

Day 7 Afternoon: More Museums

Bergen has so many more museums! So after you grab lunch (maybe in Bryggen?), find one or two of these museums which sound most interesting to you!

Most of these museums have free admission with the Bergen Card.

• Norwegian Fisheries Museum — A small museum along the water that teaches you about the history of fishing in Norway and current fishing practices. Plus they have some great interactive exhibits that both kids and adults will enjoy!
• VilVite (Bergen Science Center) — If you are traveling with kids, this is a must! This museum is full of science experiments for kids. They will learn a lot, but they will really feel like they are playing the whole time!
• Bryggens Museum (Bergen City Museum) — If you want to learn more about the history and restoration process of Bryggen, then head here!
• Leprosy Museum — This is definitely one of the more unique museums in Bergen! Late 1800s, Bergen was home to the largest concentration of leprosy patients in Europe, and you can learn about this at what used to the be leprosy hospital.
• Fantoft Stave Church — If you want to venture out of town just a bit, you can take the bus to see the Fantoft Stave Church. This is less of a museum and more of just a sight to see, but if you are interested in Stave churches you’ll want to add this to your list.

Day 7 Evening: Bryggen

There’s no better way to end your last evening in Norway than back in Bryggen , where you can grab some dinner, relax by the water, and maybe do some souvenir shopping. (Although try to hit the shopping before dinner since stores will start to close!)

We’ll keep it low-key this evening, since you probably need to head back to your hotel and start packing up. But stay out for a bit and soak up a bit more of that fresh mountain air that you will wish you could bottle up and take home with you.

Tips for Visiting Norway

If you’re coming from the United States, Norway is a relatively easy country to visit. Most Norwegians are comfortable speaking English, most restaurants and shops take credit cards (in fact, lots don’t take cash!), and cars still drive on the right side of the road.

Here are a few tips to make your travels to Norway a little smoother though:

• Expect rain! It can rain a lot in Norway, and weather can easily change from clear skies to rain within the day. Always have rain gear with you! And wear shoes that will be okay in the rain.
• Wear layers. Temperatures during the day can vary, so always be prepared with layers.
• Wear sunscreen! This is just a good all around travel tip, and since Norway can sometimes be gray or rainy, you may not think to put sunscreen on. But always apply it!
• Budget for food expenses. Norway is known to be one of the most expensive countries to visit, and we definitely saw that in the food prices! So make sure you have plenty of room in your budget for food. We definitely found Oslo to be more expensive than Bergen though.
• Learn some Norwegian. Even though Norwegians are comfortable speaking English, learn a few words like “hello” and “thank you” in Norwegian to be polite.
• Don’t be surprised with you don’t get a response. If you are trying to be polite and say “thank you” don’t be surprised if you don’t get a “you’re welcome” back. It’s just one of those cultural things, but no one is being rude!
• Consider City Passes. If you plan to see a lot of sights in Oslo and Bergen during your 7 day Norway itinerary, consider getting the Oslo Pass and Bergen Card to save money. They also include local transportation!
• Check attraction times and dates. Always be sure you know what time something opens. And check the dates too! Some museums may be closed on certain days or even during the winter entirely!

Norway road trip - make memories for a lifetime

Stunning Norway has an abundance of sensational landscapes and beautiful roads. The combination of well-built modern roads and sharp mountain peaks, gigantic fjords, mighty glaciers, and wild coasts is hard to beat. A Norway road trip is best done in summer when the days are longer and you have more hours to drive.

But where do you go? I am sharing a two-week road trip which really fits the description “best of Norway”.

How do you get to Norway?

Best time for a road trip in norway, the best car for your road trip in norway, calculate your road trip budget, norway road trip itinerary: from cities to islands.

You will find direct flights from the U.S. to Norway with a few different airlines. Flights usually land at Oslo Airport in Gardermoen. Expect to pay on average $790 for a round trip flight NYC-Oslo and $1000 on average for LAX-Oslo.

At the airport you can pick up the rental car for your road trip and begin your vacation. Once you finish your Norway road trip in Lofoten you will need to catch a domestic flight back to Oslo before heading home.

Summer is the best time for a Norway road trip. The period from June to August sees the warmest temperatures and the most hours of daylight. The visibility on the roads during the day is also better in summer. In addition, several of the best roads in Norway are closed during the winter, especially those that go over mountains.

But of course, the best time for a Norwegian road trip is determined by what you want to experience. If it's skiing or the northern lights that attract you, you should go in February or March. Spring and fall have certain clear advantages: with half as many visitors on the roads, there is less traffic, especially around the tourist attractions and these periods often beckon with less expensive hotel prices.

It’s a good idea to have some extra space in the car if you are driving longer stretches over several days. Get a car rental type that is large enough and preferably has an extra empty seat depending on how many passengers are traveling. Being cramped in the car, possibly with luggage on your lap, is no fun! And renting a good car that won’t give you any trouble is pretty easy in Norway.

Thinking about costs is the least pleasant part when planning a Norway road trip. As you know, Norway is a rather expensive country to vacation in. Through a planned budget, you can keep track of the costs and avoid bad surprises at the end.

The average price per day for a rental car in Oslo is NOK 1,055 (about $100). If you plan on following our first itinerary, you’ll need a car for 13 days, which brings the cost to NOK 13,715 (about $1,300) though you can find cheaper prices from time to time.

Accommodation

13 hotel nights

• Average price for a mid-range hotel, double room: NOK 1,605 ($150) per night x 13 nights = NOK 20,865 ($1,950)
• Other alternatives, like hostels, can be cheaper if you’re traveling alone: NOK 883 ($83) per night x 13 nights = NOK 11,749 ($1,079).

A Norway road trip itinerary that covers about 870 miles would require approximately 41 gal of gas for a medium-sized car.

Based on the price of the gallon of gas in Norway (NOK 84.2 or $7.67 in April 2024 according to numbeo.com ), the total gas cost will be approximately $315 .

The total cost for accommodation, car rental and gas , for a 13-day road trip in Norway (based on two people traveling together and sharing the cost) would be approximately: NOK 18,400 ($1,700) per person with mid-range hotel accommodation.

Day 1: Oslo (1 night)

Norway's capital has seen a huge development in the last 15 years and is home to over 700,000 people. Today, Oslo is an exciting city, with a wide range of restaurants and entertainment. It is a perfect place to charge your batteries before you embark on your Norway road trip.

The Opera House , Vigeland Park , Akershus fortress , Holmenkollen, and the Viking ships in the Viking Shipyard (currently closed, but said to reopen in 2026) are major attractions.

There are also world-class museums such as the Munch Museum and the Norsk Folkemuseum , home to many historic buildings.

If you have time, you can ski both downhill and cross-country regardless of the season in the SNØ indoor stadium. A boat trip in the Oslo Fjord offers the opportunity to see the city from the water.

Where to stay in Oslo: Hotel Verdandi is a very central and also affordable hotel in Oslo.

Day 2 & 3: Bergen (2 nights)

Driving distance from Oslo : 298 miles, approx. 8 hours drive

You begin by driving the E134 over Hardangervidda National Park, the largest high mountain plateau in Europe whose endless expanses lie above the tree line. That Valtatie 7 highway shows you more of Hardangervidda, but the E134 passes by Heddal Stavkyrka . This is Norway’s largest and most well-preserved stave church, a fascinating medieval cathedral made entirely of wood with many Old Norse-inspired decorations.

On the way to Bergen, magnificent fjord landscapes await. The Hardangerfjord is perhaps the most famous fjord in Norway and home to the country’s most beautiful orchards. The area is known for its special cider. If you go on the left side of the Sørfjord after the town of Odda, you will come to the manufacturer Aga Sider, which is located next to the very ancient farm Agatunet with 13th-century wooden houses.

After you take the ferry across the fjord at Jondal. You don’t want to miss the Steindalsfossen waterfall, where you can walk on a path behind the roaring, falling water curtain itself.

Today's destination is Bergen, a cultural city with a lot of history, gastronomy, and impressive surroundings. The Bryggen neighborhood is known for its colorful facades by the sea. Its strong connection to the Hanseatic period makes the area a World Heritage site and one of Norway's most visited tourist attractions. Håkonshallen is a majestic royal banquet hall from the 13th-century. The Fløyenbanan cable car takes you up to the town's nearest mountain in five minutes and offers wonderful views over the whole town.

Where to stay in Bergen: Radisson Blue Royal is located in the World Heritage Bryggen, surrounded by historical sights. It offers comfortable rooms and a lovely breakfast buffet.

Who doesn't want to brighten up their Instagram by standing on the iconic protruding rock tip Trolltunga on the Hardangerfjord? However, keep in mind that you’ll first have to brave a 7 mile steep hike uphill to get there.

Day 4: Sogndal (1 night)

Driving distance from Bergen: 173 miles, approx. 4 hours drive

Start by driving road E16 north from Bergen. You pass the Voss ski resort and soon come to the Nærøyfjord. This is perhaps the most spectacular of all Norwegian fjords because several smaller and narrow fjords converge here. The entire area is classified as a World Heritage site due to its unique character.

You continue through the Laerdal tunnel, the world's longest car tunnel with over 15 miles which is usually seen as a tourist attraction in its own right. After Laerdal, you take the ferry and then pass the Kaupanger stave church. You spend the night in Sogndal in the middle of the fjord landscape.

Where to stay in Sognal: Hofslund Fjordhotell has a spacious garden with a pool next to the Sognefjord.

The Nærøyfjord is so special that it's time to park the car for a couple of hours and take a boat tour with one of the electric, state-of-the-art boats. You can also take what might be the train journey of a lifetime on the famous Flåm line from Flåm.

Day 5: Molde (1 night)

Driving distance from Sogndal: 264 miles, approx. 8 hours drive

The road over Sognefjellet is one of Norway's highest roads and stunningly scenic when the weather is good. You pass right near Galdöpiggen, Norway's highest mountain (8,100 feet). Even after Sognefjället, the road meanders through breathtaking sceneries with deep valleys and wild mountains. It honestly resembles a fictional movie world! The adventure continues on the Ørnevegen, a serpentine road that goes straight up and is almost a mile long with all its turns.

Between Sylte and Åndalsnes begins another famous stretch through idyllic Valldal, famous for its strawberries. After it is time to descend the legendary Trollstigen - another extreme serpentine road that climbs down into the beautiful mountain valley Isterdalen.

Trollstigen is not dangerous to drive as long as you take it easy. If you have time, you can drive a bit on the E136 into Romsdalen. Here you find Europe's highest vertical rock wall. The day ends with you taking the ferry from Vestnes to the attractive town of Molde.

Where to stay in Molde: Molde Fjordhotell sits on the quay in central Molde and has lovely bright rooms facing the Romdalsfjord.

Day 6 to 8: Trondheim (3 nights)

Driving distance from Molde: 157 miles, approx. 3.5 hours drive

It is an absolute must on your Norway road trip to go north from Molde to the small coastal community of Bud. From there, you follow the coast up to Kårvåg by driving the famous Atlanthavsvägen - a stretch that The Guardian called "the world's most beautiful road". This road, which runs over eight bridges and a series of treeless islands, has been used in many commercials, especially car commercials. It probably feels familiar immediately even if you are driving it for the first time!

The day ends in Trondheim, which was founded by Vikings in the 9th-century. The city has an abundance of historical sites such as Nidarosdomen Cathedral , Kristianssten fortress , Norway's best-preserved historical fort, and Munkholmen, a small island with a medieval monastery that was converted into a prison. There is also Bakklandet district, a historic neighborhood that is popular for its colorful wooden houses and cozy cafes.

Where to stay in Trondheim: Clarion Hotel Trondheim is an architectural delight paired with great views over the fjord and the city.

Day 9: Helgeland coast towards Brønnøysund (1 night)

Driving distance from Trondheim: 232 miles, approx. 6 hours drive

It only gets better. North of Trondheim awaits the Helgeland coast, one of those areas in Norway that you may not have heard of but which you will remember as one of the absolute highlights. This coast offers driving at its best.

The coastal road on National Highway 17 is a sometimes dreamlike road that starts in Steinkjer and ends, 40 miles later, in Bodö above the Arctic Circle. With continuous mountain massifs inland, you pass small fishing villages and white sandy beaches on the road as it snakes its way through an ever-changing landscape. This leg takes you to the coastal community of Brønnøysund, which is suitable for an overnight stay.

Don’t miss the island of Leka as it is something very special. Its bright red-yellow color has nothing to do with its surroundings. The island is actually a small piece of North America left in Europe!

Where to stay in Brønnøysund: Corner Hotell is a nice family-owned hotel that is affordable and centrally located in Brønnøysund.

Norway has 18 dedicated tourist roads with Kustriksveien being one of them. These roads have been designated as Norway’s most beautiful and the country has invested in their design, viewing platforms, rest areas, and bridges.

Day 10 & 11: Helgeland coast towards Bodö (2 nights)

Driving distance from Brønnøysund: 331 miles, approx. 8 hours drive

The northern half of the Helgeland coast in particular offers much to experience and I would recommend staying at least an extra day. For example, you can take a boat out to the 6,500 Vega islands for hiking and paddling in incomparable nature, surrounded by thousands of Puffins. The boats out here depart from Horn just north of Brønnøysund, where you spent the night.

Worth mentioning is the huge mountain Torghatten near Brønnøysund. It has a hole in the middle through which you can see the sun setting. Also, don't miss Svartisen National Park with its rare beautiful glacier.

Where to stay in Bodö: Scandic Havet is a modern and comfortable hotel with panoramic views that can arrange various day trips.

The views from Rødøyløva mountain on the island of Rødøy beat almost anything I've seen.

Day 12 & 13: Lofoten (2 nights)

Driving distance from Moskenes to Svolvear on Lofoten: 77 miles, approx. 2 hours drive

From Bodö you can save yourself a lot of driving if you take the ferry directly to Moskenes on Lofoten. Lofoten is something of a world in itself and should not be missed. They can be described as an extremely dramatic mountain range. The countless pointed mountains stretch out into the North Atlantic and become a row of islands at the far end.

But not only the spectacular landscapes draw visitors. On Lofoten, there are many activities to try and a lot of traditional culture remains in the small, interesting fishing villages. For drivers who are doing a Norway road trip, it is a pleasure to drive on these roads that wind between mountains and the sea.

Where to stay on Lofoten: Thon Hotel Lofoten in Svolvear offers you nice views of the harbor and the city.

Kaviar Factory is an unexpectedly good museum of modern art in Henningsvaer, a fishing village built on the islands and a major tourist attraction in itself.

Driving through Norway's ever-dramatic landscapes is one of a kind. A road trip in Norway is something far beyond the ordinary and offers a journey that passes fjords, mountains, history, culture, and wonderful people. The only disadvantage might be the fact that Norway is a bit pricey, but if you set your budget before it is not too bad. And even though this guide contains a lot, there is much more in Norway to discover - you may have to book another flight immediately!
