Consider what sort of art materials you want to be carrying around.

Are you looking to carry canvas sheets or hardboard canvas? If you are carrying canvas sheets it’s important to choose a bag that will support the canvas and prevent it from getting folded or bent during your travels. If you are using a hardboard canvas then it is a good idea to have a bag with a compartment to keep your canvas separate from your other art materials.

Watercolor Paint

Watercolor paints come in a selection of tubes, or in a half pan tray set. They are usually quite compact and are easy to slip into a compartment in your carrying case – whether it is a messenger bag for art supplies, an art supply backpack, or an art carrying case with wheels.

Acrylic tubes

Acrylic tubes are also easy to slip into an art supply case – but it’s always important to make sure you have tightened the lids securely to prevent any leakages!

Pencils, pens, and markers

Pencils, pens, and markers can easily get damaged or lose lids if they are thrown into the bottom of an art supply bag. It’s a great idea to have a separate pencil case that you can slip into your art supply bag. Some art supply bags come with a handy zipper pocket for storing your pens, pencils, and markers.

Mixed media

Mixed media includes a huge variety of art mediums. For this reason, it is important to have an art supply carrying case with several firm compartments to store different mediums.

A very important factor in deciding what art supply carrying case to buy is size. You need to ask yourself what size artwork will you be carrying around, and also what quantity of art supplies?

If you are carrying around A2 canvases, steel rulers, and pencils, for example, then a good quality A2 or A1 art portfolio bag would do the trick.

If you want to carry micron pens, graphite pencils, an A4 sketchbook, and some other smaller bits and pieces, then you could opt for an over-the-shoulder art supply messenger bag.

If you are carrying heavy art supplies then you need to choose a bag that is durable, strong, and offers good shoulder or back support. It is always important that your art carry bag is comfortable.

There are several different types of bags to choose from: backpacks, messenger bags, handheld bags, and more. Choose a style that is best for your specific art supplies and is easy to use and easy to carry.

What sort of bag would best suit your needs? An art supply backpack is a great bag for when you are traveling and want to keep your art supplies safe. You can take this on a plane trip or when you are out hiking.

Because you are carrying it on your back, art supply backpacks can often hold more art materials than an over-the-shoulder art supply messenger bag.

That being said, an over-the-shoulder art supply messenger bag is great for day-to-day art material access. I find using my art supply messenger bag invaluable for gallery visits (especially when you want to sketch the art on exhibition), en Plein air painting, and whenever I do some urban sketching.

Will it offer enough protection for your art supplies?

The most important factor of all in choosing your art supply bag is will it protect your art supplies? You need to consider if there is enough support and space to hold your materials and tools without squashing them or bending them.

Your art supply bag must be durable and long-lasting. You really don’t want to be faced with a situation where your bag rips open or the strap snaps while you are out and about.

It is always a good idea to choose a bag that is waterproof so that your art materials and tools are protected from rain, spilled coffee (this regularly happens to me), or other liquids.

Choose a bag with sufficient compartments for your needs. You can use your art supply bag as an all-in-one bag and keep your mobile phone, tablet, and wallet in there together with your art supplies!

Choosing a bag with zip is helpful if you want to securely close your bag and make sure that nothing falls out. However, a flap is easy to use and you can easily flip it open and closed as you need it. This really comes down to personal preference.

Choose an art supply bag designed in a way that makes it easy to find your supplies and tools. It’s a good idea to regularly go through your art bag and make sure you have thrown out anything you don’t need and replace materials that are old or broken.

Along with all the practical considerations when choosing an art supply carry bag, think about what the aesthetic of the bag says about you. What is your artistic personality?

An art travel kit is essentially a collection of art material, art supplies, and tools that you can easily carry along with you while you are traveling. The art you make while you travel is the best art in the world. Yeah, I said it. Of course figuring out how to pack art supplies is the challenge. In a technical sense, of course, it’s nice to work in a studio with all your paint, equipment, and tools instead of on a park bench with a pencil you stole from a miniature golf course—but in terms of impact, passion, and capturing the spirit of a place or a moment, art in transit is unparalleled.

The Art of Travel

Old Moleskine journals are stacked on a shelf in my room, each packed with sketches, doodles, thoughts, and impromptu English/French hybrid poetry. While I hope those poems never see the light of day, and my many sketches of Notre Dame probably belong at the bottom of a lake, that stack of journals would be right at the top of the list of things I’d rescue in a fire. Every page is a creative time capsule that immediately transports me back to the exact time and place I created them. Travel is a special time of flux, transition, and inspiration; if you can capture that feeling with something you physically create, you’ll never forget it. Seriously. You are a different version of yourself on the road, and that time and place is worth capturing in more than an Instagram selfie. But traveling with art supplies is hard. So here’s a list of carry on packing tips , tricks, and hacks from some great traveling artists to get you back on the road to creativity. See what I did there? That’s art, baby.

How to Pack Art Supplies: Carry On Only

It goes without saying that this is a carry on only artist packing list , but I’ll say it anyway— Don’t check a bag full of art supplies . Trust me, you don’t want your fragile brushes, sketch pads, and watercolors chucked around as they’re shoved under a plane.

3-1-1 Rule: Art Without Liquid

TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule  is about more than just tiny shampoo bottles. It applies to all liquids—which includes your oil and acrylic paints. Since 3.4 oz isn’t enough to paint with—especially for color mixing—and since you probably already filled your one clear plastic bag with actual shampoo already, let’s assume that you can’t pack any liquid paints. It’s a bummer, I know, but great art is about exceeding your limitations with what’s at hand. Man, I feel inspired already. So, if paints are out, what are your travel art supply options?

You can’t walk into a cafe in Spain without hearing the snap of that iconic elastic band and the  skrtich  of a pencil furiously sketching a stranger that isn’t aware they’re a subject. For a lot of artists,  a moleskine and a pencil, or pen, is all you need to create amazing art work on these little canvas pages .

The name in the travel journal game for the last 20 years, Moleskine’s extensive line of sketchbook options includes:

Travel Watercolor Kits: Make a Splash on Instagram

If you’re not familiar, watercolor is super hard…but, damn, it’s pretty. And for the traveling artist, watercolor might be your best option for creating vibrant art on the move.

Watercolor paint isn’t a liquid (you’ve got to wet it first) so it’s carry on compatible. Bonus: you can wet the paint multiple times without ruining it (unlike leaving the cap off your acrylic paint for five minutes) and the amount of paint you need is tiny in comparison to oil paintings. Plus,  watercolor brushes are adorably itsy bitsy . The best part about watercolor though, has to be the ease of cleaning and use. Unlike other paints, you don’t have to clean a watercolor brush right after using it—like at the cafe. Just run the brush under water when you get a chance, and boom, all better. If you do have a brush fetish, and the smaller watercolor brushes that come with most kits aren’t enough for you, upgrade to a small flat brush. However, a flat brush is really only necessary if you want to paint with  gouache paint , like James Gurney.  Sidenote:  James Gurney is awesome  and you should totally experiment with gouache paint. Artist  Hali Karla  recommends this setup for traveling with watercolor:

• 4ml Koi Watercolor Brush ($8)
• Pilot Point Ultra Fine Black Pen ($11)  (for those sweet outlines)
• (1) small bottle of white acrylic paint (for corrections)
• (1) Winsor & Newton’s Payne’s Grey watercolor paint  ($11)
• (1) quart sized bag with  Gouache paint  (basically “opaque” watercolor)

National Geographic artist and contributor,  Candace Rose Rardon  recommends:

• (2) Winsor & Newton watercolor brushes (size 2 and 4)
• Winsor & Newton watercolor compact
• (1) Mimik synthetic squirrel hair brush (round, size 6) — only $3!
• Canson Montval watercolor pads (various sizes)
• Faber-Castell’s PITT Artist pens ($3 each)

Like Candace, I’m a big fan of the  Winsor & Newton Watercolor Compact set ($68) . It’s got room for 14 colors, a brush, and it seals shut in a tidy container you can take anywhere with confidence. If you’re looking to go smaller than the Winsor & Newton case, I’d recommend a pair of binder clips work can help organize and contain your travel-sized palette, especially outside or on the go. Just clip the watercolor palette to your moleskine, and you’re all set to make some great art.

Pencils, Charcoal, & Graphite: Sketch of a Travel Artist

For the rest of us who can’t grapple with the subtle complexities of watercolor (it’s seriously super hard) colored pencils, graphite, and pens are solid travel art supply options. There are even watercolor pencils as a hybrid option. Megan Van Groll, from  Travel, Paint, Repeat  says that her secret for making art on the go is a mix of pencils and preparation:

“About 10% of my portfolio consists of hyperrealistic colored pencil drawings. So when I do choose to make art on the road, it’s usually small works on paper with graphite or color pencil. I’ll sketch the outline of my piece before leaving, secure the paper with archival artist tape to a piece of masonite or very hard cardboard, cover it with another protective piece of board or cardboard, and lay it flat in my hard-sided carry on luggage . Pencils are very easy to transport so there are no flammable materials or liquids to worry about there!”

Colored Pencils & Graphite

Three of the biggest names in colored pencils are Prismacolor, Faber-Castell, and Derwent. They each make great color pencils, but what you want depends on how you draw.

• Prismacolor’s Soft Core Pencils ($74)  are perfect for blending, but they’re expensive, and break easily
• Faber-Castell’s Polychromous Set ($40)  is smooth as butter, but doesn’t keep a sharp point
• Derwent Studio Color Pencils ($45)  feature a hexagonal grip, if that matters to you

It’s really up to how you sketch. Regardless of which pencils you choose, remember that you don’t always need the full set to make great work. Pick and choose a few of your favorite hues from the 72-pack and see what happens. Also, a pencil nub is kind of perfect for traveling, so don’t be afraid to take along some old stubby pencils from around your workspace. Here are some other non-traditional pencil options (and an erasure eraser, because we’re not all perfect).

• Derwent Charcoal pencils ($11)  come in a handy 6-pack that includes a case and a pencil sharpener
• White Stabilo marking pencils (1 x $4)  are perfect for sketching on damn near any surface. Water soluble, and very erasable, this pencil is perfect for sketching and removing.
• White Pearl Erasures (3 x $3)  are great…even though you never make mistakes.

Digital Art Alternatives

Before I finish, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include some of the fascinating new digital tools available to today’s traveling artists. Styluses and digital canvases have finally upgraded to the standards that working artists demand, while being intuitive enough (and affordable) for your average backpacker with a vision in their heart and some time to kill before their next flight.

53 Paper App  (FREE)

Art is messy and in today’s digital sharing economy the incentive for artists and travelers to share their work immediately from the road is pushing a lot of creators to move away from the traditional sketchpad and pencil. Fifty-Three is leading this digital art charge with their  Paper drawing app . Combined with their surprisingly intuitive  “Pencil” digital stylus , 53 is literally taking creativity to the cloud. The app features a host of color options, palette blending, sketch tools, digital watercolor, markers, and pens, not too mention handy list and note features. The recent software upgrade now lets you upload your own photos or pictures to the app where you can edit, sketch, and doodle on top of them. It’s a brave new world.

“Pencil” Digital Stylus  ($59)

The actual stylus is kind of fantastic. I own one, and I’ve taken it on several trips with great results. The battery life is great—I get weeks of sketching out of a single charge—and it’s USB rechargable, so I just plug it in when I have down time to make sure it’s topped up. But, the real treat is the functionality. The stylus tip is pressure sensitive and responsive—it actually draws what I want—which is saying something. I’m also a massive fan of the digital eraser on the top of the stylus. It works just like a real pencil, simply flip it over, erase, and flip back to continue. I forget it’s not graphite sometimes.

Organization is Key

Forget brush sizes, fancy paint, and 300 gsm quality paper. TSA regulations,  packing cubes , and ziploc bags are the real tools of the traveling artist’s trade. Before you sketch a single line, you have to know how you’re going to carry your tools safely, cleanly, and effectively. Now that you know what to pack, how do keep your supplies organized and your t-shirts unsoiled?

Alvin Double Pocket Mesh Bags  ($17 each)

Alvin is a trusted name in the art supply game with a lot of different options for storing your art supplies on the move. I like the double-pocket mesh bags because I don’t store a lot of particularly messy items, and the extra pocket helps keep everything together. If you’re really fancy, the  Alvin Prestige Deluxe Mesh Bags  ($17-$42) feature clear reinforced vinyl with a zipper for keeping all your messier supplies—like brushes and watercolors—far from your clothes.

Art is messy, but so is travel. I can’t imagine leaving home for my next adventure without a camera and a sketchpad to capture my experience. Photos are great at capturing the harsh reality of your travels—the people, places, and things—but sketches, drawings, collages, and paintings capture something so much more vivid and memorable than even the best DSLR in the world. Art makes the best souvenir.

Travel Art Supplies

Travel art supplies are my adult wubby. if i’m going to leave the house for an outing or a night away, i always throw them in the car.  they are essential gear, packed year-round, and always at the ready. here’s my compact system that works great for mixed media art on the go., travel art supplies video.

Backpack Cooler Camping Stool

I originally bought this stool to use as my travel art supply bag in 2017 and I would buy it all over again today. Features that make it awesome include: it’s durable, waterproof, roomy, allows for hands-free carrying, and you always have somewhere to sit. Through the years, I’ve also found it’s convenient to leave open as you work so all of your supplies are accessible and contained.

As an added bonus, it’s easy to quickly pick up and carry off at a moment’s notice … like the time homeless men began to fight next to me and my sister as we sketched on a Chicago street.

My all time favorite sketchbook is a Pentalic Aqua Journal sized 5×8 inches. It contains 48 pages of 140 lb (300 gsm) acid-free, European-made watercolor paper. The paper is the perfect weight and texture to hold up to multi-layered mixed media work. Six signatures are sewn into the beautiful landscape-format hardcover journal so the pages lie flat when the book is open. An elastic brush holder is attached to the top of the book, perfect for holding a travel brush.

Pencil Pouches

Pencil pouches keep supplies organized inside the cooler bag. Most of my pouches are Blue Q brand. Woven from 95% recycled polypropylene, they are easy-to-wipe-clean and have some awesome designs. Check out all their designs and sizes on Amazon .

TIP: Make a paper tag labeling the contents of each bag and tie them on the zipper pulls. It helps when you can’t remember which bag holds which art supplies.

Water Considerations

Water is necessary for the creative process and sometimes when you’re creating on location, it isn’t available. If I know that will be the case, I put a small water bottle into my pack. Obviously, water is heavy, so I take a 10 ounce leakproof bottle and don’t completely fill it.

When it comes to creating with a lot of water soluble media, a tiny spray bottle comes in very handy. Having the bottle tucked into the outside pocket makes it easy to access. Also in the outside pocket, I keep a folding water cup called an aqua tote . I recommend it as it folds flat and has outer pockets you can tuck art utensils in as you create instead of letting them roll to the floor. If you can’t find it, though, Faber Castell’s collapsible cup is a great second best.

Pencil Roll

Having a pencil roll solves a lot of problems when you’re arting on the go. It keeps all of the utensils from rolling away and it enables an organized view of everything. Although I have some extra stuff, the vital items in the pencil roll for me include: a mechanical pencil , a Stabilo All pencil in black , a white Uni-ball Signo pen , and waterproof black fineliners ( Micron and Uni-ball Vision ).

In the “nice to have” category, I also carry a set of black Pitt artist pens in various sizes, a fountain pen, a uni-ball silver & gold set, and some monolith shading pencils.

Pencils, Chalk, & Rulers Pouch

Items that don’t fit in the pencil roll go into this pouch. First, it has a view finder that I received in an urban sketching class. The window measures 4.5 by 3 inches. Holding it up helps with composition when sketching plein air. It also serves as a template to create lots of thumbnail composition sketches before starting the final piece.

Additionally, I carry a 6 inch right triangle ruler ( similar to this one ). It helps with perspective and angles, has a few different sized circle templates on it, and, of course, has a measured straight edge which can help with scale. I also carry a kneaded eraser and a clic eraser . For sharpening, I have a sharpener that can sharpen 5 different sized pencils . Lastly, I carry a smudge stick and 2 Lyra graphite sticks for large area coverage or marks (one water soluble and one not).

Watercolor Pouch

In my watercolor zipper pouch, I carry paints and brushes. There is a travel tin palette with 14 half pans. The tin holds mostly Daniel Smith colors from the Essentials set and the Primatek set . Additionally, I keep a book of Peerless Watercolors on hand which is similar to these Vivia Watercolors .

Nine brushes grace my watercolor pouch:  4 travel watercolor brushes and 5 aqua brushes. All of the travel watercolor brushes come in the handy, protective reversible cases. I have an Escoda Kolinsky round size 6 that I adore. It’s the most expensive paint brush I’ve ever bought. I bought it in 2015 and it is still the first brush I use (and sometimes the only one). I also picked up 3 assorted sizes of Rosemary & Co travel brushes . They’re also squirrel hair brushes and hold pigment beautifully.

I have both Kuretake and Pentel Aquash aqua brushes. The only difference between the two is how you load them with water. I prefer the Pentel Aquabrush which comes apart so you can drip water into it. The Kuretake pens suck water into the barrel. Two of the Pentel aqua brushes always remain loaded with an inky water mixture for shading. The other three I keep handy for general needs.

Liquid Inks

The liquid inks pouch holds tiny little plastic squeeze bottles . Unlike watercolors, these remain permanent when dry. Because the squeeze bottles come in an inexpensive bag of 50, I created one for each color of my liquid inks for travel. Both Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay India Inks and Daler-Rowney FW Acrylic Artists Inks fill these little 10ml bottles. They work great and remain drip proof after 2 years of use and travel.

Paint & Markers

Because the travel supply kit is typically for plein air art, I often paint landscapes which incorporate shades, tints, and tones of green. For this reason, I include a few small tubes of acrylic paint, including: two tubes of green, a tube of brown, and tubes of white and black paint.

For markers, I include a full set of small Posca markers . Full of acrylic paint, they are permanent, opaque, and work great over most media including watercolors. Then, I include a yellow, red, and blue Tombow marker . Tombow markers are water soluble. Having the primary colors suits all needs since they can be blended with a wet brush to create other colors.

Crayons & Colored Pencils

Lastly, I carry a set of Tri-Tone colored pencils with multi-colored leads (pictured to the left). The Tri-Tone set is not water soluble, so they work great for fine details and the multi-colored tips add real depth to the artwork.

Weight & Distance

There you have it. Those are the travel art supplies I carry with me whenever I have an outing. I feel like some people might be concerned with the weight of the pack, so I weighed it and it is exactly 10 pounds. I’ve carried it long distances before with no problem. Also, I have taken this through TSA checkpoints countless times with zero issues.
