Pioneers of English Wine

Start exploring

Established in 1972, by Janet and Rodney Pratt, Bolney Wine Estate in West Sussex was one of the first, and remains one of the most beautiful, English wine estates. Janet and Rodney were pioneers. Guided by nature – the mild climate and the sandstone soil – they discovered the best varieties of grapes to grow in their eco-system. The team now produce award-winning still and sparkling wines from our famous Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to our classic sparkling Bolney Bubbly and Blanc de Blancs.

10 Best English Sparkling Wine Producers

03 Jan, 2018

At Winerist, we’ve been watching the English wine industry flourish over the past few years and the wines coming out of this green and pleasant land are are increasingly good – staggering good in some cases. And while the still wines are improving slowly, it’s the sparkling wines that are the real stars, thanks to a climate and soils that are very similar to those in Champagne. Here are our top ten English wine producers that you need to get to know…

Hattingley Valley (Hampshire)

Hattingley Valley

Address: Wield Yard, Lower Wield, Alresford SO24 9AJ

Founded by Simon Robinson in 2008, Hattingley Valley’s first 28 acres of vineyards were planted. Today, the site has more than doubled in size, with 60 hectares planted in total, managed by a team that pioneers techniques in wind and frost protection, irrigation, nutrient application and canopy management. Since launching its first release in 2013, Hattingley Valley has become a well-respected producer in the industry, with its wines receiving recognition in competitions across the globe. Most notably, their Blanc de Blancs just beat the French at a major blind wine tasting in London, where English fizz was pitted against Champagne – quite the feat! Their tour includes a trip to the vineyards, a visit of the state-of-the-art winery as well as a tasting of Hattingley Valley’s premium sparkling wine. The winery is situated only 100 metres away from an award-winning pub: The Yew Tree, which provides a perfect location for lunch after or before your tour, although booking is required.

Fun Fact : During the second fermentation in Hattingley Valley’s wine-making process, the pressure in the bottle is equivalent to that of the tyre of a double-decker bus!

About the winemaker : Emma Rice is one of the three winemakers at Hattingley Valley who make the outstanding wines made unique by the elegant touch of oak. She was awarded UKVA Winemaker of the Year in 2014 and 2016.

Hambledon (Hampshire)

Hambledon

Address: East St, Hambledon, Waterlooville PO7

Hambledon is England’s oldest commercial vineyard, originally established in 1952 by Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones. England’s first commercial range of wines came from this Waterlooville-based winemaker, and over the years it has garnered various awards – Her Majesty the Queen even served some of Hambledon’s wine to the French president on one of her visits to the French embassy. The tour consists of a guided visit of the vineyards and the winery, as well as a tasting of two of Hambledon’s wines. The vineyards are located near ‘The Vine’ Hambledon, a wonderfully cosy pub that is worth a visit if you find yourself in the area.

Fun Fact : The climate in Hambledon is almost identical to that of the French region of Champagne.

About the winemaker : Head winemaker Hervé Jestin has overseen the production of over 200 million bottles of Champagne throughout his career, and is considered one of the best in the industry. He oversees all the crucial stages of the winemaking process including pressing, fermentation, bottling and the final assemblage.

Address: Allens Farm Ln, Exton, Southampton SO32 3NW

First planted in 2003, Exton Park has grown from 12 acres to more than double that size in just a few years. The varying altitude of Exton Park’s vineyards means that different vines benefit from different microclimates. While there is no tour available, the vineyards are located in South Downs National Park which consists of 1,600 square kilometres of breathtaking views and hidden gems, definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Fun Fact : The owner of Exton Park used to work in the watercress industry, and was Europe’s leading producer of fresh bagged salads and cress.

About the winemaker : Corinne Seeley’s winemaking career began in Bordeaux with Chateau Lynch Bages and Domaine de Chevalier and, since then, has flourished in Australia, the Languedoc, the Douro and now England. At Exton Park, her skill in producing elegant sparkling wines with character and finesse is very evident, and her philosophy of creating non-vintage wines to suit the English climate is widely respected.

Jenkyn Place (Hampshire)

Jenkyn Place

Address: Jenkyn Place Cottage, Hole Lane, Bentley, Farnham GU10 5LU

Simon and Rebecca moved to Jenkyn Place in 1997 and planted their first vines 7 years later in 2004. In 2007 and 2010, more vines were planted until they reached maximum capacity. Jenkyn  Place wines are now sold worldwide, having won numerous awards and accolades. The tour includes a guided visit of the vineyards by owner Simon Blazon and a tasting of Jenkyn Place’s range of award-winning wines. A church is located close to the vineyards, as is Blacknest country club, which are great to visit if you’re nearby.

Fun Fact : The vineyards that Jenkyn Place uses to make sparkling wine were originally abandoned hop fields next to the founders’ property.

About the winemaker : Dermot Sugrue is the talented young Irish winemaker behind the 2008 and 2009 vintages of both Jenkyn Place English sparkling wines, which are made in the traditional method. Dermot is based at Wiston Estate Winery in West Sussex and was formerly the chief winemaker at Nyetimber. He has also worked in Champagne, Bordeaux and India.

Address: Gay Street, West Chiltington, West Sussex, RH20 2HH

Dating back to 1086, the Nyetimber estate is a place rich in history. However its winemaking days only started almost 900 years later, when the first vines were planted and since 2006, its wines have earned their place on the world stage. The vineyard opens its doors to visitors on two annual open days in June and September – there’s still tickets left for this year if you fancy exploring for yourself!

Fun Fact : Nyetimber owns a refurbished 1968 Routemaster bus which offers a luxurious, quintessentially British setting in which guests can relax and enjoy a glass of some of England’s finest sparkling wine. The bus tours the country visiting a variety of sporting, music and culinary events, so keep an eye out for the distinctive mint green Routemaster somewhere near you!

About the winemaker : At Nyetimber, it is winemaker Cherie Spriggs who is central to every decision that gets made. She takes great pride in her work, and assesses each vineyard, chooses the best time to harvest the grapes, supervises their gentle pressing as well as the vinification in the steel tanks.

Kent vineyards are beautiful, abundant and easily accessible, and with more than 50 vineyards to choose from, visiting one has never been easier.

Famously known as the ‘Garden of England’, the english county of Kent also lays claim to some of the countries leading wine producers with many wines punching well above their weight in national and international markets.

Sparkling wines are the great success story of recent years, with excellent growing conditions and similar soils to the Champagne region of France helping vineyards to consistently produce award winning wines. Although evidence suggests vineyards and wine-making were prominent in England over 2000 years ago under Roman occupation, the renaissance in English wine production is a relatively recent phenomenon.

The use of new grape varieties, more suitable growing techniques and improved disease control have helped boost the number of commercial vineyards across the country to over 400. Media attention and public interest in English wines has never been greater.

There’s never been a better time to visit Kent vineyards.

The best news is that many vineyards in Kent are more than happy for you to visit. With vineyard tours, wine tastings, restaurants and retail outlets available, there are few better ways to pass a beautiful summer’s day.

English Sparkling Wine Tasting

Discover the surprising offer of sparkling wine in the sussex and kent region in england.

When we think of England, sparkling wine is not the first thing that comes to mind, but nowadays it should be. The country has been building an impressive reputation in wine production over the last 30 years or so. These sparkling wines are much more palatable and don’t have that distinct champagne taste, which means that non-champagne drinkers might love this.

The cool southern climate is perfect for maintaining the needed acidity for sparkling wines, and its limestone slopes and chalky soils make for the ideal wine-growing country. There is no need to worry about the carbon footprint; it stays low because the fruits are locally sourced. The first sparkling wine made with locally sourced grapes dates back to the 1950s.

Now, you can find approximately 500 vineyards and 130 wineries across the United Kingdom, with Kent and Sussex at the helm. It turns out that sparkling wine makes up 69% of all wine production in England. Also, it is interesting to know that this product gets exported to around forty countries . Raise a glass on your Private Tour of England .

Great British Bucket List

The Best Sussex Vineyard Tours

The best sussex vineyard tours will have you sipping english sparkling wine in the south downs and sampling fine whites by the south coast..

Vineyard at sunset

England’s wine scene has surprised a lot of people. 100 years ago, who would have expected our sparkling wines to be out performing classic champagne brands at wine awards around the world? While England’s wine heritage may not have the same reputation as our friends across the channel, the conditions and landscapes in Britain are becoming more and more suited to wine production.

As Europe heats up, the south of England has become a desirable region to plant vineyards, with dry, warm summers and cool winters – perfect for growing grapes.

Pouring English sparkling wine

The majority of English wine is white or sparkling, but there are a few bottles of rose and red in production too. Today, there more than 700 different vineyards scattered across Great Britain, ranging from tiny producers to large-scale operations.

Why is Sussex such a great place for wine production? Well, the vineyards in this part of England have similar soil types and climate conditions as the best vineyards in the world. The moderate climate gives the grapes time to ripen slowly, increasing their ripeness, complexity and acidity. On an ideal year, the vines will avoid frost in April and enjoy a warm September, plumping them up before harvest in September or October.

Grapes on a vine

The chalk and sandy soil in the region is also similar to that found in the Champagne region of France.

In 2018, Ridgeview winery in Sussex won the title of Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition. That’s not all, there are several others close by with excellent reputations.

One of the best ways to get to know the region’s impressive wine selection is by tasting it on site.

All of these Sussex vineyard tours give you the opportunity to see how the process works, from grapevine to bottle. Plus, the best bit? You get to drink some too!

Enjoying some bubbly

The Best Sussex Vineyards

Depending on where you’re travelling from, I’ve separated the vineyards into their locations in East and West Sussex. If you can’t plan a trip right away, or want to give the trip as a present, you could buy a gift voucher via the websites below.

East Sussex Vineyard Tours

Rathfinny wine estate.

Rathfinny Wine Estate was established in 2010 near Alfriston in the beautiful South Downs. The vineyard is located on south-facing slopes, benefiting from warmth, sea air and excellent chalky soil. It’s as though Sussex has a microclimate designed for growing grapes for wine production!

Rathfinny Wine Estate is one of the largest vineyards in the UK, and just ten years into its lifespan, is already producing award-winning English sparkling wines.

It has its sights set on an ambitious task too – to expand to approximately 350 acres of vines, producing almost eighty thousand cases of Sussex Sparkling wine per year.

Wine tasting tour at Rathfinny Wine Estate

The vineyard is open for tours and tastings at various times throughout the year.  Of all the Sussex vineyard tours, this one is amazing for learning about how sparkling wine is produced and what makes it special.

After a wander through the vines, hearing from a knowledgeable guide all about the process, it’s time to head to the tasting room for a few samples.

Terrace at Rathfinny Wine Estate

It’s worth noting that Rathfinny Wine Estate also has a top restaurant (the Rathfinny restaurant menu looks incredible!) plus smart accommodation on a B&B basis.

Address: Rathfinny Wine Estate, Alfriston, East Sussex, BN26 5TU.

Find out more about the vineyard tours of Rathfinny Wine Estate

Bluebell Vineyard Estates

Bluebell Vineyard Estates lies in a contrasting location, close to bluebell strewn woods and on the edge of Winne-The-Pooh’s favourite forest, Ashdown Forest!

The family-run vineyard was established in 2005, and up until last year had focused on producing top class English sparkling wines. In 2019, the vineyard released a new range of still wines. With 100 acres of vines, and a beautiful location too, this is one of the best Sussex vineyard tours.

Bluebell Vineyard, Sussex

There are a few options on offer, including guided vineyard tours with tastings, picnics, special events and self-guided woodland trail walks.

Their Sussex vineyard tours offer a ‘grape to glass’ experience. After seeing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties growing, there’s a chance to peek inside the winery and production room, before tasting four different wines in the tasting room.

Wine tour at Bluebell Vineyard, Sussex

Address: Bluebell Vineyard Estates, Glenmore Farm, Sliders Lane, Furners Green, East Sussex, TN22 3RU.

Ridgeview Wine Estate

Located close to the stunning village of Ditchling in East Sussex, this Sussex vineyard has an excellent reputation for its full flavoured sparkling wines. Another lovely site, on the edge of the South Downs, the region benefits from great chalky soil and a moderate climate.

Chardonnay vines in August at Ridgeview Wine Estate (Photo ©Julia Claxton)

The vines were planted back in 1995, back when wine production in Sussex was a pretty niche activity. And these days? Ridgeview is one of the top producers of English sparkling wine – sold by top brands Laithwaites, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. It’s also won several awards including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

Ridgeview sparkling wine (Photo © Julia Claxton)

There are regular guided tours of Ridgeview Wine Estate, where you can find out more about what it takes to produce an award-winning sparkling wine, what the key characteristics of the wine are, and quiz the staff all about life on a vineyard. Then it’s time for a few samples in the beautiful tasting room overlooking the South Downs.

West Sussex Vineyard Tours

Nyetimber vineyard.

The most famous of all the Sussex vineyards on the list, I’ve seen the Nyetimber wine labels on numerous occasions at restaurants and attractions in the UK. Nyetimber’s estate is located in picturesque West Chiltington, and again enjoys a climate that is perfect for a slow ripening of the grapes.

Nyetimber Vineyards

The wines are produced using traditional methods, including an ageing process during which the wines develop complex flavours.

Nyetimber offer one of the best Sussex vineyard tours. The two-hour tour begins in the White Barn, learning about the history of the wine brand from an experienced guide. Then it’s time for a wander around the pretty estate and vineyards, taking in views over the West Sussex countryside.

Nyetimber English Sparkling Wine

You’ll finish your tour in the 15th Century Medieval Barn for a tasting of Nyetimber’s award-winning sparkling wines, including the gold-medal winning Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage, Rosé Multi-Vintage and Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage.

Nyetimber Estate

Address: Nyetimber Vineyard, Gay Street, West Chiltington, West Sussex, RH20 2HH.

Stopham Vineyard

This spectacular Sussex vineyard is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty in West Sussex and forms part of the South Downs National Park. The vines here benefit from great conditions, including a sandy soil and moderate climate.

At Stopham, they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Bacchus grape varieties as well as producing sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This is top quality wine too… I mean, if it’s on the menu at restaurants such as Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, it must be!

In terms of tours, you can visit this picturesque West Sussex vineyard most Saturdays from April to October (call and book before you visit). Usually you’ll tour the grounds with one of the winemakers, so you’ll learn lots about production, what makes this area great for the grapes and see all the equipment that’s used too. Then it’s time for a guided tasting of a selection of wines.

Address : Stopham Vineyard, Stopham, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 1EE.

Albourne Estate

Just twenty minutes from Brighton lies this beautiful wine estate, overlooking the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. It’s one of the smaller and newer wineries in Sussex, launching in 2010, and now covering 30 acres.

Albourne Estate, West Sussex vineyard tours

The estate produces several white wines as well as top-quality English sparkling wine. I think a wine tour of Albourne Estate offers a great introduction to wine production in England.

It’s a family-run business, with passionate individuals overseeing all the key processes. On a tour, you’ll have a chance to ask all the questions you could desire and peek into all the areas of the business, from the vines themselves to the bottling and labelling areas.

Once you’ve toured the vineyards and seen the production process, it’s off to the tasting room for a tasting of four of the Albourne Estate’s wines.

Enjoying a wine tour at the Albourne Estate, West Sussex

Address : Albourne Farm, Shaves Wood Lane, Albourne, West Sussex, BN6 9DX.

Bolney Wine Estate

This is a vineyard with family at its heart. Three generations of the family work at Bolney Wine Estate, heading up different operations. The founders set up camp in 1972, when they planted three acres of vines.

Since then, the estate has gone on to produce premium red, white, rose and English sparkling wines, picking up several awards along the way. One of the most prestigious accolades came in 2017, when the winery took the title of Winery of the Year at the UK Wine Awards.

Bolney Wine Estate (Photo: Chris Orange)

As Sussex wine tours go, the options at Bolney Wine Estate are among the most magical! The vineyard trail is a beautiful route for all the family to explore, charting Bertie the Bolney Bunny’s adventures. Kids will love passing through the vines using the trail map, and there’s a chance to win a prize for finding Bertie too!

Bolney Wine Estate balcony overlooking the vines (Photo: Chris Orange)

For grown-ups, there are several offerings too. The most popular is a casual tour of the vineyards followed by a tasting, but there are more sophisticated options too, including a gourmet dinner with wine pairings. The food looks top-notch, so I know which tour I’d choose!

Address: Bolney Wine Estate, Foxhole Lane, Bolney, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 5NB.

Wiston Estate

Wiston Estate is a 6,000-acre estate located in the heart of the South Downs. It’s another vineyard with a huge family history. The land has been in the family since 1743! The vines were planted in 2006, and include classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Wiston Estate, Sussex

Wiston Estate specialises in production of sparkling wines, so if you’re a fan of bubbly, this is the Sussex wine tour for you!

Wine tours take place from April to October, and begin in the estate’s original 16-acre chalk vineyard, before heading inside to the ancient Wine Barn for a tasting session of English Sparkling wines.

I had a brilliant day with Wine Tours of Kent! Although I live locally there was so much I didn’t know about vineyards in Kent (including how beautiful they are!) and so I really enjoyed the day! The trip was really well organised and a great, socialable way to learn about the local wine as well as taste it!! I would 100% recommend this tour company and I will be booking again

We had a wonderful day with Wine Tours of Kent. We didn't know much about wine before the tour but now feel so much more knowledgeable and can't wait to book another tour. The vineyards are fascinating and our tour guide Abi took us to a local pub for lunch which was also delicious - and well needed after all the wine we sampled at Chapel down! I would highly recommend this Wine Tours of Kent if you are looking for an interesting and unique way to explore Kent!

Balfour winery , kent.

Known for its world-class sparkling wines, Kent’s Balfour Winery is home to lush English vineyards, acres of ancient apple orchards and oak woodlands – perfect for nature and wine lovers alike. Located on the Hush Heath Estate, take a self-guided stroll or book for a full estate tour and tasting experience from £45-£65, where an expert will show you around the vineyards, learning about the secrets and history of Balfour as you stroll. This is followed by a tutored tasting of six crisp sparkling and still Balfour wines. The winery’s contemporary building, The View, offers sweeping views across the Kentish countryside, perfect for unwinding with a glass post-tasting. After, visit the winery shop where you’ll find plenty of sparkling and still wines, luxury hampers and gifts.

Open all year round, Balfour Winery hosts social events throughout the year, such as its dining club music sessions, jazz evenings and yoga classes followed by food and wine tasting.

More like this

What to eat: You may want to add a sharing platter to your tour booking to enjoy alongside the wines – think local Kentish charcuterie, seafood and cheese served with olives, quince jam, flatbread and crackers. If you’re visiting during the winter months, opt for the warm winter platter of local cheeses, baked camembert, house-made chutney and warm bread. A short drive away and you’ll find Balfour-owned The Tickled Trout, serving its signature fish dishes and hearty pub classics which reflect the best of Kentish produce.

What to drink: A visit to Balfour is not complete without a taste of its flagship Balfour Brut Rosé 2018 – we’d also make a beeline for the Springfield Chardonnay 2018.

Where to stay: The Tickled Trout is part of a collection of Kentish pubs and hotels selling wines from Balfour and Jake’s Beers and Ciders. Boutique rooms are simple, cosy and inviting, with exposed beams, shabby chic décor, modern bathroom fittings and sink-into beds. They also come kitted out with a large flat screen TV, Dualit coffee pod machine and a selection of tea from Joe’s Tea. From £89 for a double.

Nutbourne Vineyards , West Sussex

Set in the West Sussex countryside, Nutbourne Vineyards has been in the Gladwin family since 1991. The family also owns a selection of restaurants in London where you'll find wines from the vineyard. Sustainability is at the core of the operation, from following biodiverse practices in the vineyard (hence wildflower meadows in amongst the vines) to efforts to reduce the carbon footprint in distribution and production.

The vineyard trail is open all year round. Pick up an illustrated map and go on a self-guided tour around the different fields to discover the different grapes grown in each area and enjoy the views across the South Downs. The Cellar Door is open to pick up a bottle at the end of your visit. Guided tours and tastings are also available.

What to eat: Nutbourne offers a range of dining experiences at the vineyard throughout the year, from picnics in the summer to burgers & bubbly evenings. For a flying visit, cheese and crackers are available from April to November. Tour the vineyard, then graze on a special cheeseboard (centred around a whole Baron Bigod brie) on the viewing platform while sipping a glass of wine. For a truly memorable experience, time your visit to coincide with the Nutbourne Vineyard supper clubs on Thursday and Saturday evenings throughout summer (from £95). Hosted by the Gladwin family, you’ll enjoy a sparkling reception before enjoying a five course meal out in the vineyard, with each course matched to a different Nutbourne vintage. Produce is locally sourced, and dishes might include South Coast sea bream served with Nutbourne tomatoes, and roasted Sussex beef from Gregory Gladwin. The menu changes each month to make the most of seasonal produce.

What to drink: The 'Nutty Blush' rosé made from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir is a light pale pink hue, with floral notes and gentle berry acidity – ideal for summer sipping. Red wine fans will enjoy the Pinot Noir, with a portion of the wine aged in French oak to add depth. Bottles are all illustrated with Bridget Gladwin's paintings.

Where to stay: Nearby Cattlestone Farm has a range of camping and glamping accommodation options to choose from. Pitch a tent in the open field or book a yurt and use the outdoor kitchen, complete with a pizza oven. You might even get to spot the goats, named Gin and Tonic. If you can, book the newly renovated luxury Sunrise shepherd's hut. It's impressively spacious and cosy inside, with a comfy king-size bed. Wake up and open the double doors on to your wrap-around deck, with an outdoor roll-top bath and chairs to enjoy the views over peaceful rolling fields. The full-size en-suite shower room and fully equipped kitchen mean there’s everything you need for a quiet, relaxing break.

Cattlestone Farm Sunrise Shepherd Hut

Tillingham , East Sussex

A few miles from the medieval port town of Rye in East Sussex, Tillingham is hidden away in 70 acres of hills, vineyards and woodlands, scattered with wandering pigs, cattle, sheep and chickens. It’s a serene, bucolic setting for the cutting-edge winery, hotel and dining destination. A renovated Victorian farmstead and neighbouring hop barn contain 11 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, tasting room and shop, all replete with hip, upcycled furniture and fittings and dreamy views of the surrounding Sussex countryside.

Tillingham offers daily tours and wine tastings (by appointment only), running to around 90 minutes, at £35pp. Start in the tasting room and move through the rest of the estate, from the modern winery, to the ancient oast house hosting Tillingham’s collection of qvevri (earthenware vessels buried in the ground and used to make orange wine) through to the idyllic rolling vineyards. Our tour guide took a deep-dive into Tillingham’s biodynamic, low-intervention approach to wine-making – wine nerds and aficionados will love the level of detail. You’re also given four generous pours of different wines.

What to eat: Come for lunch, dinner or both. Set over two floors filled with vintage and revamped furniture, exposed beams, sheepskins and sprays of dried flowers and foliage, downstairs is a casual wine bar with a small plates menu and an impressive wine and cocktail list (make a beeline for the silky fig leaf martini). Upstairs houses a more formal restaurant, where new head chef Brendan Eades (formerly of Silo and the Conduit Club) has created the four-course Garden Menu that showcases Tillingham’s homegrown produce – think veg from its walled garden, meat raised in its pastures and fish caught in nearby Rye. Dishes are simply cooked and presented, yet pack in the flavour – the quality really sings. Highlights on our visit included delicate Dungeness crab with nasturtium; tender, deeply flavoured Tillingham lamb; and a luscious, perfectly set egg tart. If you’re staying over, breakfast also takes place in the restaurant and features a set menu of sourdough with whey butter and homemade jam, granola and yogurt, local charcuterie and cheese.

What to drink: Natural wine fans will love what’s on offer here. Try the delicate Col 21 with its grassy, citrussy tones, or P21 – highly gluggable, vibrant pink fizz with rhubarb and raspberry notes.

Where to stay: The estate’s old hop barn has been converted into 11 bedrooms, all equipped with midcentury furnishings and earthy jewel colours, heavenly scented diffusers, modern art, Roberts Radios, Haeckels toiletries and welcome snacks of fudge and sherry in crystal glasses. We stayed in the expansive feature double room, which comes with a freestanding tub and huge window with sweeping views of the vines and countryside.

A table with wine next to a grand wooden house

Bolney Wine Estate , West Sussex

Nestled in lushly green surrounds on the edge of the South Downs, the Bolney Estate is a long-time fixture on the English wine scene – founders Janet and Rodney Pratt first bought the land in 1972 for wine-making – raking in numerous plaudits over the past five decades. It makes both still and sparkling wines from five vineyards on the site, and there's also a sleek visitor centre complete with café and shop. Bolney offers a range of vineyard tours and tastings of varying length. We tried the Sussex cheese and wine tasting, which included a tour of the winery and surrounding vineyard, and an accessible yet in-depth guided tasting of Bolney wines paired with delicious Sussex-made cheeses and charcuterie, all of which you can find in the shop (make a beeline for the superb Brighton Blue). See tour tickets at Virgin Experience Days (£133.50 for tour, tasting and lunch for 2) .

What to eat: The light and spacious Eighteen Acre Café (if it’s sunny and warm, nab a table on the large balcony for gorgeous panoramic vineyard views) serves up generous sharing plates that make the most of Sussex produce, much of it made just a few miles away – think tender local braised pork belly with Hispi cabbage and Bolney Lychgate red wine jus, or umami wild mushroom ragu with cured egg yolk.

What to drink: We loved the floral and elegant Bolney Bubbly as well as the passion fruit and elderflower-laced Lychgate Bacchus. English still red wines are something of a rarity but Bolney’s silky pinot noir, with delicate cherry notes, is an excellent example and well worth trying. Don’t just stop at wine, Bolney also makes its own gin and rosso vermouth.

Where to stay: Nearby in the picture-postcard village of Cuckfield, Ockenden Manor is a beautifully preserved Elizabethan manor house with rooms ranging from grand oak-panelled suites to spacious rooms with four-poster beds and roll-top baths. There’s also a plush fine-dining restaurant and an award-winning modern spa just moments away from the main building.

10 of the best vineyards to visit in Britain

We'll raise a glass to that

Surrey vineyard

There a number of beautiful vineyards across the UK making award-winning wine. Here are the best vineyards to visit and raise a glass to.

Acres of acid green vines, snaking over undulating slopes as they grow heavy with ripe fruits are a common sight in Tuscany but less so in the UK. But British wine has come a long way in recent years, winning numerous international accolades and tempting even the most discerning of drinkers. If you don't believe us, visit one of these wonderful UK vineyards and see for yourself.

Langham, Dorset

Agriculture, Cash crop, Crop, Plantation, Field, Vineyard, Plant, Farm, Tree, Hill station,

In deepest Hardy country, this vineyard takes a ‘low-intervention’ approach to grape growing – striving to minimise environmental impact while producing crisp quality bubbles, that are even vegan friendly. The hand-picked grapes are processed on site using an amalgamation of old and new methods, which visitors are talked through on the two hour long guided tours. Plus, visitors can enjoy lunches and afternoon teas, prepared in the 19th century milking parlour, the perfect place to grab a bite to eat after a few hours ambling among the vines. For those who prefer a more hands on experience, don’t miss the opportunity to join in picking the grapes, loading the press and meeting the team, during the autumn Harvest Experiences, which include lunch and a refreshing glass of fizz, as a reward for your hard work.

Giffords Hall, Suffolk

Bottle, Drink, Alcoholic beverage, Alcohol, Liqueur, Glass bottle, Wine, Distilled beverage, Product, Wine bottle,

Producing a smorgasbord of sparkling wine, rose and fruity red, this family run vineyard in the village of Hartest in Suffolk, sits on the clay soil site of an ancient glacial riverbed. The whole family are welcome to take part in private or group tours, even dogs are welcome – but must stay on a lead since the vineyard is also home to a collection of free-roaming lambs and chicks.

Rodington, Shropshire

Agriculture, Hill station, Vineyard, Plantation, Field, Cash crop, Sky, Farm, Highland, Crop,

It may be small, but Rodington produces some seriously robust reds, said to rival Australian shiraz, right in the heart of Shropshire. The family run vineyard has clocked up an array of awards for a range of wines and free entry to the shop and vineyard make it very tempting to try a glass or two for yourself.

Coates & Seely, Hampshire

Drink, Champagne, Alcoholic beverage, Wine, Bottle, Sparkling wine, Glass bottle, Alcohol, Liqueur, Distilled beverage,

Crafted in small batches using traditional techniques, this winery, owned by two friends, takes full advantage of the English chalk terroir on which it sits – creating bubbles which have been served at Kensington Palace. Described as ‘fabulously elegant and refined’ by the judges of the 2017 English Wine Awards, it's no surprise Coates & Seely supply some of the most prestigious events across the UK.

Sharpham Wine and Cheese, Devon

Stemware, Glass, Drink, Wine glass, Champagne stemware, Alcoholic beverage, Wine, Alcohol, Drinkware, Red wine,

Offering tastings and tours of their irresistible wines and cheeses (a dreamy combination) this award-winning vineyard uses both New World and traditional techniques that best enhance their unique regional characteristics. After a relaxed amble among the vines, guests are invited to sample Head Chef Daniel’s delicious dishes, using the freshest local and seasonal ingredients, while soaking up the picturesque grounds overlooking the River Dart. What a divine way to spend an afternoon.

Three Choirs, Gloucestershire

Bottle, Product, Liqueur, Glass bottle, Drink, Alcohol, Wine bottle, Wine, Alcoholic beverage, Distilled beverage,

Nestled within the rolling hills and valleys of rural Gloucestershire, Three Choirs enjoy a unique microclimate, allowing them to produce wonderful wine. With an onsite restaurant and rooms to stay in, a trip here would make for a relaxing weekend break. Otherwise, simply spend an afternoon strolling amongst the vines and sampling the delicious wine on offer.

Camel Valley, Cornwall

Plantation, Agriculture, Crop, Field, Cash crop, Green, Plant, Farm, Vineyard, Hill station,

Camel Valley's relaxed, friendly tours through stunning countryside are incredibly popular, and require advance booking. But if you are not lucky enough to get a spot, or simply want to taste a sample of Cornish wine, then indulge in a glass on the terrace while soaking up the wonderful view. With two idyllic cottages available to rent on the site, located close to Rick Stein’s trio of Padstow restaurants, Camel Valley makes for a wonderful foodie escape.

Chapel Down, Kent

Castle Brook, Herefordshire

Grape, Plant, Seedless fruit, Fruit, Grapevine family, Flower, Food, Flowering plant, Vitis, Fruit tree,

Tucked in the Wye Valley, the Castle Brook vines were planted in 2004 on the site of an ancient Roman vineyard. They provide an ancient yet modern diversification strategy for this fourth-generation family farm. Specialising in Brut and Rosé sparkling wine, the team use traditional Champagne varieties and methods. Available for next day delivery, this Herefordshire based wine is certainly the answer if you're craving a fabulously British glass of bubbly. Each bottle bears the ‘Chinn-Chinn’ motif, a play on the Chinn family name, which had clearly destined them for success in the winemaking business.

Greyfriars, Surrey

The team at Greyfriars combine traditional techniques with modern wine making technology to create crisp bubbles which have won numerous international accolades. Owners Mike and Hilary Wagstaff bought the site on the Surrey North Downs eight years ago, planting over 70,000 vines across an expanse of 50 acres. During their most recent harvest they reaped over 100 tonnes of grapes, producing close to 80,000 bottles of crisp sparkling wine. That’s certainly something to raise a glass to.

Years ago, European wine was only taken seriously when it came from France, Italy or Spain – occasionally, America and Australia , but even those were a stretch – and English wine was at the very bottom rung of the ladder (not that there was much choice, mind).

But now, thanks to a handful of pioneering English wineries and temperatures more conducive to perfect growing conditions, native grapes and the bottles they create are making even the most discerning of connoisseurs sit up and take notice. And it’s about time, too.

The Brits are coming

Although Hambledon in Hampshire is the oldest commercial vineyard in England, founded in 1952 by Major-General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones, it was Chapel Down – the Kentish winery that opened in 2002 – that first broke into the mainstream in a seriously big way, with others such as Bolney Wine Estate, Gusbourne Wine and Hattingley Valley Wines hot on its heels.

Now, you’re spoilt for choice in the likes of Sussex, Kent and Hampshire with wineries peppering these beautiful counties.

Simon Roberts, director of winemaking at Ridgeview – a winery in Sussex launched in 1995 – says: “It’s an exciting time to be part of the English wine industry. Figures from WineGB (our governing body) state there are now nearly 900 vineyards in England and Wales, which is three times the number compared to 20 years ago. At Ridgeview , we’re proud to be an integral part of the growth of our industry over the past 30 years.”

The vinter has seen plenty of changes in this time, “the most significant being the effect of climate change over the last three decades. The 2018 season felt like a real change had begun, bringing a long, hot summer and a bumper harvest, which was our biggest to date before the record 2023. Ever since wine production has grown so much, and viticulture is now excitingly the fastest-growing sector in the agricultural industry.”

Roberts explains: “Much of the success of the English wine industry stems from our blending of tradition and innovation with our feet both in the Old and New Worlds .

Ridgeview has experienced exponential growth; production has increased from 25,000 bottles annually to over 500,000 with plans to reach three-quarters of a million a year.”

He concludes: “Now, it’s not unusual to see English wines on restaurant wine lists. With English wines continuously winning international acclaim, there’s a real buzz and the quality keeps improving. We encourage customers and enthusiasts to support this growing industry and sustainability efforts by buying local and visiting vineyards. Not only do they provide an enjoyable day out, but you can see just how vibrant the English wine industry is.”

Best wine by women winemakers to drink in 2024

Best wine by women winemakers to drink in 2024

Barbara Drew, Master of Wine and content officer at Berry Bros. & Rudd , the esteemed London wine merchant, chimes in: “For many years, English wine was something of a curiosity, but now the vineyards have matured, the vines are producing incredible fruit, and winemakers are much more confident in pushing the limits, knowing that their wines (certainly the fizz) can age for decades.

As a result, these wines stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of France, or New Zealand or California. The sheer variety is also exciting. For a small island, we have a range of different climates. Yes, we can produce sparkling wine that rivals Champagne , but we can also create exquisite, buttery Chardonnays, juicy rosés, really floral white wines and smooth reds. I’ve even tasted some beautiful orange wines from England recently. For any fan of fine wine, English wine is, today, not to be ignored.”

Still need convincing? Work your way through this list – they’re the best of the bunch.

Definition by Majestic Bacchus 2023

sparkling wine tours uk

Characterised by its namesake grape – mouthwateringly fresh and irresistibly crisp – this Bacchus from Majestic’s own label comes from Henners Vineyard in the east Sussex village of Herstmonceux by ex-F1 race engineer Lawrence Warr. Expect typical aromas of elderflower, gooseberry, whitecurrant and lime.

Henners Gardner Street Classic White 2023

sparkling wine tours uk

Henners Vineyard in Sussex has created its Classic White to be enjoyed any time and stand up to its European counterparts. We’d say it’s mission accomplished with an uncomplicated but sophisticated sip made from Bacchus grapes blended with a small proportion of Chardonnay. Vibrant elderflower and orchard-fruit aromas make way for flavours of whitecurrant and lime zest with a creamy finish. Deliciously drinkable.

Burn Valley Schonburger 2023

sparkling wine tours uk

Benefiting from free-draining soil that’s flinty with a chalk base – not to mention a south-facing vineyard – Burn Valley in Norfolk is quietly making some very good wine indeed. Case in point is its Schonburger: tropical-fruit flavours and aromas of lychee and rose petal make for an elegant accompaniment to Asian food.

Halfpenny Green Wine Estate Bacchus 2022

sparkling wine tours uk

This small but perfectly formed vineyard in Staffordshire produces up to 60,000 bottles of its own-label wine each year using grapes grown on-site. Arguably, its take on a Bacchus is one of its best bottles: citrussy and herbaceous on both the nose and palate. We enjoyed it as an aperitif with nibbles but it’s equally good with grilled fish or pasta dishes.

Mills & Hills Pinot Noir 2022

sparkling wine tours uk

This delicious Pinot Wine from Derbyshire – made in an old cotton mill in the Derwent Valley, no less – has great body and depth with bright cranberry, pomegranate and Morello cherry flavours. It’s silky and fresh on the palate with subtle aromas of oak spice. Really great with a Sunday roast.

Riverview Crouch Valley 2021 Pinot Noir

sparkling wine tours uk

You’ll have to be quick to get your hands on a bottle of this Pinot Noir from Riverview Crouch Valley in Essex: there are only 900 bottles made.

Husband-and-wife team Umut and Kate Yesil are onto a winner with this small-batch, single-varietal Pinot Noir featuring delicate floral notes and flavours of orange peel, smoke and sweet spice.

Bolney Wine Estate Cuvée Noir

sparkling wine tours uk

Serve something different at your next soirée with this sparkling red wine from Bolney. Yes, really.

Completely unique, it’s got aromas of red cherry, redcurrant and sweet blueberry with summer-fruit flavours and sweet spice. We’ve tried it with a couple of pairings but we think the perfect match is barbecued food such as a juicy burger: the sparkling red really cuts through the fat.

Lympstone Manor Estate Triassic Pinot Noir

sparkling wine tours uk

Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines produces his own wine at Lympstone Manor – the luxury manor-house hotel in Devon – in partnership with the local Lyme Bay Winery. Out of the four produced to date, it’s the Pinot Noir that’s the stand-out for us. Made from pure Pinot Noir grapes aged for 18 months in a combination of old and new French oak barriques, it’s light but luscious on the palate, and is exceptionally food-friendly, as you’d expect.

Chapel Down Rosé 2021/22

sparkling wine tours uk

As the official supplier to 10 Downing Street and The Cambridge and Oxford Boat Race – fancy! – you’d expect nothing but good things from Chapel Down, the now-famous Kentish winery. Thankfully, its rosé doesn’t disappoint with soft red fruit, floral notes and a refreshing finish. We suggest pairing it with fresh seafood or light meats on the barbie. When English pink is this good, who needs Provencal?

The Heretics Blowhorn Rosé 2023

sparkling wine tours uk

The Heretics is a new English wine brand that aims to offer the quality that homegrown bottles are becoming synonymous with, albeit with a design-led approach that flips the traditional labels on their head.

Its first release is the Blowhorn Rosé: a pink made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes grown in London soil in Essex. It’s the first 100 per cent barrel-fermented rosé and is encased in a black bottle to protect it from sunlight.

Don’t worry: inside, it’s pale in colour with notes of wild strawberry, subtle cedarwood and Seville orange zest. Stonking with Sunday lunch.

Black Chalk Wild Rosé 2021

sparkling wine tours uk

Combining Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this perfumed pink fizz is a complex sparkling that’s fruity on the nose and palate. Such sophistication calls for a similarly classy pairing: think sushi and sashimi, or simply a sharing board groaning under the weight of quality charcuterie.

Ridgeview Bloomsbury NV

sparkling wine tours uk

If it was good enough for the latest Queen Elizabeth II – served at her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2022, no less – then Ridgeview Bloomsbury NV is certainly good enough for us. The Sussex winery’s signature blend is made from predominantly Chardonnay grapes and features toasty brioche and citrus-fruit aromas with pleasing hints of melon and honey. Utterly versatile.

Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2020

sparkling wine tours uk

Encased in a seriously elegant bottle that’s not dissimilar to Krug, Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2020 is proof that Kent is where it’s at when it comes to English sparkling.

This is a beautiful bright gold with a fine mouse and aromas of ripe-stone fruit, honeyed citrus and toasted almond. On the palate, it's all pear and apple with hints of white peach and raspberry. Soft spice, toasted nuts and custard tart notes wrap things up.

Nyetimber Classic Cuvée English Sparkling Wine

sparkling wine tours uk

Nyetimber Classic Cuvée English Sparkling Wine is the toast of any celebration with toasty, spicy aromas and flavours of honey, almond, baked apple and pastry. The pale-golden colour means it looks elegant in the glass, too. It comes in a gift box making it perfect for present-giving.

Louis Pommery England English Sparkling Wine

sparkling wine tours uk

English grapes have been combined with the French traditions of Louis Pommery to create this British twist on its signature sparkling. Made by Pinglestone Estate in Hampshire, it’s characterised by freshness and finesse with white-fruit aromas of lime, apple and pear teamed with blackcurrant, white fruit and honey flavours.

Hattingley Valley Wines Blanc de Blancs 2015

sparkling wine tours uk

Hampshire born-and-bread, this 2015 blanc de blancs from Hattingley Valley Wines has won a clutch of awards. It's surprisingly complex, given that it’s made from purely Chardonnay, with fragrant aromas of blossom, violet and lemon zest with candied lemon, caramel and honeycomb flavours. Spectacular with something fresh like seabass.

Hambledon Vineyards Classic Cuvée

sparkling wine tours uk

You can’t write a round-up of the best English wine without including a signature from England’s oldest winery in Hampshire. Hambledon Vineyards Classic Cuvee remains a celebrated bottle for good reason by boasting a blend of all three traditional grapes – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – grown on chalky slopes to produce layers of floral and stone-fruit aromas. It’s light and refreshing on the palate with apple and biscuit flavours.

Britpop Brut by Alex James NV

sparkling wine tours uk

From Blur bassist to cheesemaker and now winemaker, Alex James doesn’t know when to stop – and we’re glad he doesn’t.

His wine brand, cleverly named Britpop, has been welcomed with open arms by even cynical oenophiles and it’s not hard to see why. This fizz is made from a Chardonnay-based blend using the traditional method and is creamy, long and toasty.

Plus, the bottle is bound to spark conversation at any table.

The Uncommon Eleanor Bubbly Rosé Wine

sparkling wine tours uk

Canned cocktails and wine have never been bigger in the UK – convenient for taking to the park or festivals, or simply enjoying on the train – and The Uncommon is the best of the bunch. Its rosé wine, named Eleanor and made in Kent, is light and bright with summer-fruit flavours.

Berry Bros. & Rudd English Sparkling Blanc de Blanc by Hambledon Vineyard

sparkling wine tours uk

Blended and bottled for the esteemed London wine merchant by historic English winery Hambledon Vineyard in Hampshire, this blanc de blanc is bright, pure and refreshing with notes of stone-fruit, gooseberry crumble – yes, really! – and English meadow. It’s made from Chardonnay grapes and is medium-bodied and perfectly dry

Bluestone Vineyards Premier Cuvée 2019

sparkling wine tours uk

Just 4,500 bottles of this English sparkling from Bluestone Vineyards in Wiltshire have been released into the wild, so hop to it.

What can you expect from a glass? It’s clean, crisp and refreshing with lemon, apple, lime and apricot flavours followed by hints of toast and honey. It’s made from a sexy foursome – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Reserve and Pinot Meunier – while being aged on the lees for a minimum of 36 months to create real depth of flavour.

Wolds Wine Estate Solay Fizzy White

sparkling wine tours uk

Nottingham may not be the first place you think of when you think viticulture, but Wolds Wine Estate is changing all that with cracking fizz in the form of Solay – or, semi-fizz, to be more precise. Tropical fruits, manuka honey, citrus and apple characterise this natural wine crafted from a Solaris and Chardonnay blend.

Tinwood Blanc de Blanc 2020

sparkling wine tours uk

This Sussex-made English sparkling starts life on vineyards neighbouring the world-famous Goodwood Estate. It’s 100 per cent Chardonnay and superb with shellfish or canapés. Don’t let its pale-yellow colour fool you: it’s got plenty of character on the palate with refreshing green apple and tropical-fruit flavours.

Roebuck Estates Classic Cuvée 2018

sparkling wine tours uk

The Classic Cuvée from Roebuck Estates in Sussex is hands-down one of our favourites. Elegant and refined, it’s all baked apples and citrus fruit on the nose with toasty richness and buttery brioche on the palate.

Wiston Rosé NV

sparkling wine tours uk

Whether with ocean-fresh shellfish or strawberries and cream, Wiston Rosé NV – from the eponymous Sussex winery – is an aromatic and refreshing pink sparkling with a lot going on. From rhubarb and raspberry to strawberry and redcurrant, it sings with fruity flavours, while persistent bubbles and refreshing acidity keep you coming back for more.

Denbies Orange Solaris 2022

sparkling wine tours uk

Hailing from Denbies Wine Estate in the rolling Surrey Hills, this orange wine is vibrant yet mature on the nose – you may even get nostalgic aromas of pineapple juice – with tropical flavours of pomegranate and lychee. Team with lightly-spiced Asian plates or perfectly-pink barbecued lamb chops. The star of any summer gathering.

The rise of sake: Taking the UK by storm

Sit at the semi-circular bar at the new 25-cover Kioku Bar in London’s The OWO hotel, and sake will be the order of the day. Helmed by sake sommelier Anthony Yukio and head of bars Angelos Bafas, this groundbreaking new offering, modelled on traditional Japanese listening bars, claims to have the largest sake collection in Europe – 110 currently sit in its bespoke sake safe – curated by sake samurai Natsuki Kikuya.

Its arrival comes as Japan’s national drink is enjoying a swell in popularity here in the UK. With the opening of other sake-specific bars such as INÉ by Taku, the launch of new retailer and events company mai, and the first National Sake Week taking place (15-21 April), it seems that 2024 marks the rise of sake.

Sales also speak for themselves: Waitrose reported a 214% rise in searches for sake on its website, and this month US brand SoGood Saké launched its product into international markets for the first time, including the UK. Plus, with Berry Bros & Rudd reporting a 1,000% rise in sake sales in the past year, is it finally sake’s time in the spotlight?

New openings

In Whitehall, Kioku Bar has been turning heads as it becomes London’s (if not Europe’s) best stocked sake bar. Its sake bible is split into sections designed to evoke feelings, senses or memories, like Trip to the Rice Paddies (sakes made from rare or lesser-known rice varieties), In the Flower Garden (floral and aromatic sakes) and Bubbly Memories (a clever nod to new sparkling varieties that offer a sense of occasion). Each sake is detailed with its region, rice polishing rate, rice variety (if known), category, abv and the volume in which it is poured – they also tell you whether it’s best served warm or hot as opposed to cold.

For Yukio, an approach of ‘breadth with the best’ has allowed the team to span the category’s many varied and versatile styles. He admits that sake isn’t always easy to work with or accessible to drinkers, but is hoping they can help turn the tide: ‘Sake is such a sensitive liquid, and there is a lot of fine tuning to be done but we want to change the culture of it – it’s crazy more people aren’t using it.’

When it comes to cocktails, flavour maestro Bafas has exercised his honed ability to squeeze ingredients to their limits with an accomplished list of 12 serves which are rooted in a key component – daikon, yuzu and wasabi to name a few. Working with sake and Japanese spirits, he is also using sake byproducts to bring extra dimensions to his drinks, from sake lees and koji to kasu.

In north London, INÉ by Taku has also opened Upstairs at INÉ, a sake lounge and gallery space where head sommelier of Taku, Bowie Tsang, and INÉ’s head sommelier Daniela Shelton have curated a list of sake’s categorised by flavour profile: fruity & expressive, light & delicate, umami & rice, and dessert.

Having opened London’s first independent sake bar, Moto, in 2019, Erika Haigh’s latest venture, mai, is a boutique Japanese fine sake merchant, working with restaurants (including INÉ) to source high-quality sakes while also providing an online retail space for consumers to buy – and learn about – sake. ‘We’ve launched the digital bottle shop as well as another consumer-facing aspect of our business, collaborating with a lot of our trade clients who are also interested in doing events,’ she explains. Haigh’s events sees her pairing sake with the likes of cheese, pizza and tea to ‘put sake in places that it hasn’t been associated with before, and hopefully that means speaking to a new audience’.

A change of pace

Historically, sake is a category that has been largely misunderstood outside of Japan , something that National Sake Week founder and sake expert and trainer, Samuel Boulton, comes up against at his regular tastings. ‘There’s a confusion about what the alcohol component of it is, what it’s actually made from, and how you’re meant to drink it.’

In the interests of clarity, sake is a Japanese alcoholic drink made from rice. It isn’t a spirit and isn’t distilled – instead it is a fermented drink, made in breweries and, as such, is much lower in abv than most people presume, often hovering around the 15% mark. It’s also more akin to wine than spirits and, instead of being drunk in shots, is best sipped and paired with food.

It’s a category that seems to be speaking to drinkers’ sensibilities, says Haigh: ‘Sure, there are three huge sake breweries, but there are 1,200 more that are truly family-run businesses passed down from generation to generation that rely on centuries of experience. People are looking for artisan products made with love, and this really applies to the craft sake industry.’

Room to expand

Retailers and makers are reacting in kind to the rise of sake. In May this year, Berry Bros & Rudd launched its second sake en primeur offering with bottles from three breweries: Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute, Tatenokawa and IWA 5.

East London’s Sake Collective shop and tasting room, which will mark its second anniversary in July, is already on the look out for a second site. ‘We’ve been growing slowly but steadily this year,’ explains co-manager Michael Gastaldi. ‘We’re doing better compared to previous years and doing a lot of wholesale, the majority of which are Michelin-starred Japanese restaurants, but also other cuisines… we have a couple of French clients who do sake pairings with their menus.’

Last October also saw London brewery Kanpai up sticks from its original 2016 Peckham site and move into a much bigger premises on Bermondsey Beer Mile where tours, brewing days and a busy taproom are feeding consumers’ thirst for sake. Co-founder Tom Wilson is seeing a shift in sake’s drinkers: ‘The demographic has massively shifted with many younger people coming into the category… who are finding their palate. A big part of that is having more variety but also sake itself and its connection to Japanese culture.’

He also echoes Haigh’s point that drinkers are becoming enamoured with the craft of sake: ‘We’re experiencing a movement away from more entry-level, mass-produced styles and people caring about where it’s come from, the rice, individual styles.’

The rise of sake: A bright future

Sake’s star might be rising, but there is still plenty of work to be done when it comes to consumer education, which Boulton does with his regular consumer trainings and tastings.

Haigh has always been vocal about the need to make sake more translatable for drinkers. With most bottles having Japanese labelling, deciphering brands, styles and profiles can be a deterrent for shoppers – it’s something she’s keen to resolve at mai. ‘I really try to do great back labels that destruct sakes: what it tases like, what vessel it will work well in, very much a description of what to expect when they open the bottle, always trying to break down those barriers of entry.’

Has sake finally arrived? ‘We’re at a nice tipping point, I think sake is happening, but we’re not there yet,’ says Wilson. ‘The consumer is moving in the right direction… this is just the beginning.’
