Solo Traveller Holidays

Did you know over half our customers are solo travellers?

Our small group guided tours are specifically designed for solo travellers. You can expect a mix of gender (typically more females) with an expert guide and lots of free time. We believe these are the perfect holidays for a solo traveller who doesn't want to travel alone!

We have thousands of adventures including exploring Vietnam, kayaking through Croatia and trekking the Inca Trail. There’s no need to worry about convincing a friend to join you, you can head off and explore the world with The Adventure People instead!

Hassle-free adventures

Our aim is to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible to experience unique trips at the best price, no matter if you travel on your own or as part of a group. You will be able to socialise, meet new people but also have some time to yourself throughout the holiday.

Accommodation made easy

We try to make this part as simple as possible. You will be paired with another traveller of the same sex to share a room during your adventures so you won’t have to pay anything extra. If you prefer your own room you can pay a little extra (we work hard to keep this as little we can) which we can arrange after making your booking, just let us know.

Authentic and affordable trips

We try to work with as many local providers as possible. It means we can offer you the biggest range of adventures and it enables you to see countries in a more unique and authentic way. Plus, we can keep the cost of the trip down by cutting out the middle man!

We work hard with our suppliers to minimize extra costs like single room supplements for solo travellers.

Like-minded travellers

Most trips are guided in small groups, usually made up of between 10 and 15 people. In these groups, half or more will be fellow solo travellers. You get to meet like-minded people who all have the same sense of adventure and thirst for exploring. You'll have a local tour leader to look after all of the group’s needs and logistics and ensure you have the best experience while you are away.

Independent travel

If you like to travel a bit more independently, we have a selection of tours that are self-guided. We will equip you with all the things you may need for your adventure and you can explore at your own pace. Again, we try to keep any single supplements as low as possible by working closely with our local partners.

Adventure Holidays For Singles

If you're single this type of holiday is fantastic, we would say that but they really are. We have loads of trips for different age ranges and interests. The small group adventures offer a social holiday for singles which provide an immediate group (or squad) to explore with. You'll certainly make friends for life.

How does room-sharing work?

If you are happy to share, the rooms will be allocated based on gender and age. So, you'd be paired with someone of the same gender and as close to your age as possible.

Now, you might be thinking, 'suppose I don't like my roomie?'. Well, although very rare, this does of course happen. This is a good example of why having a guide is a good idea. If you let your guide know they'll be able to find a solution which works and you can enjoy your holiday. We must stress, this situation is very rare!

If you would prefer your own room then in many cases you can pay a little extra during the checkout process to secure on your booking. Alternatively, we can request your own room from the operator and we try to keep the cost as low as possible for you.

What is the age of other travellers?

This can vary hugely depending on the trip. Take a look on our website for the age range of the tours you are interested in, some providers specialise in particular age groups and that will be listed here. Remember you can also ask our experts.

In general terms though the average age is around 39. However, we have some adventures with an age limit of 18-29 and the average age here is 24. Other adventures have an age range from 18-39 and the average age here is around 30. Then to consider are the tours themselves, some adventure tours just appeal more to a younger or older demographic.

We can always find out the mix of people booked onto any tour.

How social is it?

Most tours have a good mix of time as a group and time alone. In the evenings, for example, you may have dinner all together but you can choose not to join if you prefer to do your own thing. There will also be free time built into the itinerary for you to explore independently.

You can make the holiday as sociable as you like and the choice is really yours.

Can I get my own room?

Yes, on most adventures you're able to pay a little extra for your own room.

Are other solo travellers on the trips?

Yes, typically each group is made up of around 50% solo travellers and the rest a mix of friends and couples.

How many people are in each group?

Groups sizes range from 1 or 2 up to typically 16 as a maximum but check the adventure details to be sure.

Out of Your Comfort Zone

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, 5 best group tour companies for young solo single travelers.

Last Updated on July 17, 2024 by Lohanna Reis

Traveling alone is wonderful, but it can also be intimidating. Especially if your destination has a language or a culture completely different from your own.

And sometimes, making friends while traveling can be difficult and many worry about getting lonely. So, a good option for anyone who wants to begin adventuring around the world on their own is to use a tour excursion company that specializes in trips for young adults.

Of course, traveling is always about visiting a place and seeing new things, but one of the highlights is often meeting new people along the way. This is what is called social traveling .

Is it worth going on a group tour as a young solo/single traveler?

As with all types of travel, there are pros and cons to going with a tour company, especially with companies specialized in tours for young travelers since many include lots of partying and going out and daily bonding with the same group. So, it’s possible that this isn’t the right choice for you.

(PS: still a young adult traveler who is interested in group tours but not the party aspect of them? See tour companies # 3 & #4 below or see my article with the 5 Best Small Group Tour Companies for International Travel  for  some more options)

So it’s important to know some things beforehand about this type of trip so you can decide for yourself if it’s your style or not.

What are travel groups for young solo/single travelers like?

How to choose a tour company for young single/solo travelers

To help you choose an excursion that works for you and fits your travel type, we’ll separate out the companies that specialize in guided trips for young single/solo travelers with the best reputations (and prices) on the market here, including a comparison table.

It’s also worth remembering that some of these companies offer guided tours beyond those just for young adults. So no matter what, you should be able to find one a tour that works best with your personality, your wallet, and your patience.

Note: And if you are a woman and want to take a solo female small group tour, take a look at our bonus option after the comparison table: Solo Female Travelers Tours

5 Best Tour Companies for Young Solo/Single Travelers

Sextiki

Contiki is the most well-known tour company for young travelers worldwide. It’s been around since 1962, so its name carries quite a lot of weight.

But don’t worry if this sounds a bit intense for you…the options below are a bit more “calm.”

So, as you can imagine,  most of Contiki’s excursions involve lots of partying and going out with “pub crawl” kind of nights. And since there’s plenty of cool stories online of young travelers who traveled and would travel again with Contiki, it must be one of the best companies available if this is the type of travel you’re looking for.

Contiki has more than 328 distinct tours for many destinations across the 6 continents. According to their website, 55% of travelers who chose Contiki are single and are traveling alone, but the trips can also accommodate groups of friends and couples.

Group tour for solo young travelers

One thing to keep in mind is that the groups are usually quite big, around 30 people, and the main form of travel is the company’s coach bus.

Finally, their tours have a bit of everything: physical activities , exploration of local culture and food, and visits to ethical and sustainable organizations and projects in your destination. In other words, you are capable of a journey full of different attractions, sounds, and experiences!

Party tour groups young solo

Topdeck is a company that offers“epic trips and tours for young adventurers aged 18-39.”With 40 years of experience, alongside Contiki, Topdeck is one of the most well-known companies in terms of group travel for young solo/single travelers.

Their trips are divided into several categories:

  • Hotel tours: designed for couples or singles who want to travel a bit more comfortably through Europe, the U.S., Canada, or Asia. All hotels have, at least, 3 stars and the excursions give you a lot of free time to relax or explore on your own.
  • Explorer trips: these are shorter trips, between 6 days and 3 weeks, with just one country for those who want to explore local culture more deeply. The groups are small and accommodation is in shared or private hotel rooms.
  • Hostel plus trip:  low-cost tours with accommodation in hostels , cabins, or vans and with itineraries with multiple destinations/countries.
  • Camping trips: these trips are the cheapest way to travel through Europe with Topdeck. The accommodation is camping with private chefs cooking meals daily. The bunks are for two people and include mattresses.
  • Sailing trips: these trips are an awesome option for anyone who dreams of sailing the world but doesn’t have an idea of where to start. Accommodation is within a sailboat in double, triple, or quadruple rooms with meals included.
  • Festivals and events: these tours are specifically for events like Oktoberfest or the Sziget festival (in Hungary) and other festivals in the United States, Canada, and Europe .
  • Ski trips: these trips are perfect for anyone who loves snow and skiing . With destinations in Canada, New Zealand, Bulgaria, and Japan . Accommodation is in private or shared hotel rooms.
  • Gap year: this trip is made for young travelers 17-18 who want to travel in Europe after graduating high school. It’s a great idea for anyone who wants to travel on their own without freaking their parents out. Accommodation is in hostels and the destinations usually include 8-10 countries.

tour groups singles young

Created in 1990, G Adventures was born with the idea of offering authentic adventures responsibly and sustainably. Their excursions have reasonable prices and cover all the continents, including Antarctica!

The groups are small and the itineraries are designed so you have time to explore on your own. The trips are themed and have different options for all ages, including a category for young travelers aged 18-39.

The trips in this category are faster-paced and designed for young travelers. In other words, you explore during the day and stay up at night. Their motto for these excursions is “live fast now.” So, their trips are usually longer than the others and offer more activities.

Plus, this category of travel groups is a bit more affordable with accommodation in hostels and a few meals included to guarantee a cheaper price. You can read more about these trips here .

Or, just click in the link above, go to G Adventures main page, click “Travel Styles” and select “18-to-Thirtysomethings!”

tour groups singles

It’s worth remembering that these trips follow the basic principles of G Adventures: small groups and free time. Plus, the trips are done in a responsible and sustainable way, prioritizing small businesses and the welfare of animals, children, and indigenous communities.

And finally, like Intrepid, G Adventures is a partner of Planeterra, an NGO dedicated to ensuring that communities touched by tourism benefit from it, rather than be exploited by it. The organization helps to empower local populations, preserve their cultures, and create support systems by managing 50 organizations across the 7 continents with the aim of benefiting women, at-risk youth, and indigenous and rural communities. You can read more about Planeterra here .

Best tour groups

Intrepid is considered by many to be one of the best options for those who want to travel as part of an excursion with small, adventure-focused groups .

All trips offered by Intrepid are sustainable, and because of this Intrepid is known and respected as the global leader in sustainable travel.

The company has zeroed its carbon footprint and supports the Intrepid Foundation, a foundation that finances the planting of trees worldwide creates jobs and local education, and helps the world achieve 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. You can read more about the foundation at https://www.theintrepidfoundation.org/.

Intrepid has many types of trips for all budgets and personalities. That said, the company prides itself in organizing small groups of up to 10 people. This is because Intrepid believes that this is the maximum number of people that still allows a true connection with locals without you simply feeling like just a face in the group. The trips are also always designed to give you some time to explore on your own.

Group tour for solo young travelers singles

The trips made for young travelers aged 18-29 (called their “18 to 29s” trips) are designed specifically for the new generation of socially-conscious explorers. In other words, they were created for travelers who want to discover new places and cultures, make new friends , and also make a difference in the world.

There are many destinations and the cost of the trips are relatively low given that they are designed for young travelers. You can see all of Intrepid’s tour options here .

Party tour groups young solo single

Unlike the other companies mentioned above, Trek American only offers excursions for North and Central America. And in general their tours are quite small, just 13 people, with the exception of their “plus” tours of up to 30 people.

Trek America is also quite well-known and has been running since 1972. Like Contiki, the tours are exclusively for young travelers aged 18-38 and include itineraries of 3 days to 3 months.

The reputation of Trek America is that they offer experiences which change your life with a balance between visiting big cities, national parks, and other activities that explore the most incredible places in North and Central America.

And, unlike Contiki, Trek America trips don’t include the “pub crawl” culture. So if you are a young traveler who is more interested in exploring and making new experiences instead of partying, Trek America might be good for you.

tour groups singles young solo

They have 3 types of tours:

  • Original tours: small group tours with the aim of having an authentic “ road trip ,” with cheap accommodation that includes hostels, camping, and budget hotels. The groups have 10-13 people, which gives you a bit more flexibility in the itinerary.
  • Plus tours: offered just to explore North America, these tours offer more comfort, primarily when it comes to accommodation, and you’ll stay in hotels, eco resorts, and apartments. Plus, breakfast is included as is more activities than the original tours. The only “con” is that the groups are usually bigger (up to 30 people).
  • BOLT tours: offered exclusively for Central America with a combination of private transportation and local transportation. The groups are 12-18 people with accommodation in hotels and with a bit more flexibility, meaning the most famous tourist spots will be included, but you’ll still have lots of free time to explore on your own.

Your first solo holiday

Woman on a solo holiday in Lindos, Greece

It can be difficult to know what to expect when you set off on any holiday, and if you’re a  first-timer on one of our solo holidays,  that’s especially true.

So, below you will find just a few of the many reasons why solo traveller holidays with the award-winning travel service Friendship Travel can offer you an amazing, stress-free experience:

  • You will be travelling with plenty of like-minded people to share your experience and memories with, whether you are hoping to enjoy one of our  cruises ,  walking holidays , city breaks,  ski holidays , or any other kind of getaway.
  • Your Friendship Travel host/tour manager will make you feel completely at ease on your first singles holiday, introducing you to your fellow solo travellers and being your point of contact if you need any travel advice or have any concerns.
  • We have tried and tested all of our hotels and resorts for your peace of mind.
  • The people you share your time with on our group holidays for solo travellers are just as keen as you are to meet others and experience new places.
  • Be your own tour guide! Choose what you do and who with, ensuring your holiday is entirely hassle-free. If you would prefer to spend some free time alone relaxing, that’s not a problem. Or if you want to enjoy a small group tour or shore excursions with others, that’s fine too.
  • As a solos holidays specialist, we only offer package holidays which do not include the single supplement that single people are often charged when booking places on family or couple-oriented breaks. With no supplement or extra cost to pay, this means you will have more to spend on the things that really matter – like great food and drink and fascinating escorted tours.
  • Even though you will be travelling solo, your accommodation will not be limited to small single rooms. On the majority of our single traveller holidays, guests are given the exclusive use of a spacious double or twin room, so you can be assured of having a comfortable and relaxing base from which to explore your destination of choice.

Your fellow single traveller holidays guests

21 Best Solo Travel Vacations for Singles in their 30s

Sharing is caring!

Alright, my single friends in your 30s! I only have 2 months left in my 30s to write this 🙂 So consider this your elder’s wise, wise words. I began solo traveling in 2014. I took my first solo international trip in 2018, and I have loved every single solo road trip and solo trip I’ve taken! So let’s get into it.

Disclosure: Some of the links on this page are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

What’s your Travel Style?

First things first (I’m a realist), you have to decide if your vacation is for leisure. Or is it for sightseeing? Or do you want a good old-fashioned combo platter? I personally like the combo platter – I like to go places where I can read a book all day in a hammock but also go see their best sights. I talk more in-depth about how I plan (or unplan) a trip in this podcast episode ! But deciding on what your travel style will be for your next vacation is a good thing. That way you have made sure that you have the best singles vacation you can imagine!

Now, are we driving from where you are? Flying in a plane? What time of year is it? Don’t count out a singles cruise.

Check the best destinations for day trips – sometimes it’s very helpful to have a bus drive you to the Grand Canyon instead of having to do it yourself!  I love a wine tour and want someone else to drive – it also means I get a little bit of people’s time on the tour and it’s only a day so I’m not locked into their itinerary.

Here are the Eleven Best Places for Singles in their 30s to visit in the US:

  • The Grand Canyon is a top spot for any intrepid traveler looking for a solo adventure and a trip of a lifetime. Take an inclusive package and be accompanied by like-minded solo travelers and local guides who will take care of the heavy lifting, so you can focus on the stunning views and finding the perfect travel partner.
  • Yellowstone National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers and bookworms alike, with its stunning scenery and opportunities for solo departures. Wild Women Expeditions is one of the best companies for female travelers looking for a love affair with the great outdoors and a good book.
  • The Pacific Coast Highway is the perfect way to explore California’s best vacation spots, with great food and the opportunity to meet like-minded travelers. For those seeking a trip of a lifetime, consider taking a tour with one of the best travel companies that offer solo departures and small group tours.
  • Route 66 is a classic road trip destination and a top spot for singles looking for a good trip and new things to explore. Book with a travel buddy or join a group tour for the best experience. Grab a free audiobook before you go.
  • The Great Smoky Mountains offer a great vacation for year-olds and are one of the best cities to explore for nature lovers. Take a solo adventure or join a tour with like-minded solo travelers and discover the region’s rich history and culture. The Rocky Mountains are a top spot for adventurous travelers looking for a perfect holiday with plenty of opportunities for hiking and skiing. Join a tour with one of the best travel companies for solo departures and meet other like-minded travelers.
  • The Florida Keys are a great vacation spot for those seeking inclusive packages and a chance to relax and unwind. Join a tour with a travel partner or go solo and meet other like-minded solo travelers.
  • The New England states are a good trip for those seeking a type of trip that combines fall foliage, charming small towns, and fresh seafood. Join a tour with like-minded solo travelers and discover the region’s unique culture and history.
  • The Southwest is a top spot for adventurous travelers looking for heavy lifting and a chance to explore the region’s stunning desert landscapes and national parks. Join a tour with one of the best companies for solo departures and discover the best cities and local guides. If you haven’t looked at the mountain town of Taos – make sure you do.

10 Tips on Solo Traveling

  • Research your destination: Do your research before you go and learn about the local culture, customs, and language. Knowing what to expect can make your solo travel experience smoother and more enjoyable.
  • Stay in hostels or Airbnb rentals: Hostels and Airbnb rentals are great options for solo travelers, as they offer the chance to meet other travelers and locals. Hostels often have common areas where you can socialize and meet like-minded people.
  • Use public transportation: Public transportation is a great way to get around and explore your destination. It’s often cheaper than taking taxis or renting a car, and it gives you the chance to see more of the local culture.
  • Meet other travelers: Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with other travelers you meet along the way. You may find that you have a lot in common and can explore together.
  • Stay connected with family and friends: Letting your loved ones know your itinerary and checking in with them regularly can give you peace of mind while traveling solo. You can also share your experiences with them and get their advice on what to see and do.
  • Be open to new experiences: Solo travel is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Be open to new experiences, whether it’s trying new food, taking a different route, or striking up a conversation with a stranger.
  • Join a tour group: Joining a tour group is a great way to meet other solo travelers and explore your destination with a knowledgeable guide. Look for small group tours that cater to solo travelers or those in their 30s.
  • Embrace solo time: While it’s great to meet new people and explore with others, don’t forget to take some time for yourself. Use your solo time to reflect, recharge, and explore at your own pace.
  • Stay safe: Safety should always be a top priority when traveling solo. Research your destination beforehand and take precautions such as avoiding unlit areas at night, not carrying too much cash, and being aware of your surroundings.
  • Have fun: Solo travel is a great opportunity to explore, learn, and have fun. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things.

Singles holidays under 30: solo travel tips

Going on your first solo holiday can sound a bit daunting but believe us when we say it won’t be! Over 60% of our tours are booked by solo travellers so everyone's in the same boat as you. Tucan Travel have been operating group tours since 1987 with all tours being accompanied by a Tucan Travel expert Tour Leader, so you're in safe hands. Always do your research before visiting a new country, but here are a few key tips that are worth knowing:

1) Learn some key phrases

Whenever you’re travelling to a new country, it always does well to learn a couple of key phrases. Even if it’s just hello, please, thank you and goodbye, it is really appreciated by the locals. A good tip is to keep a phrase book handy or download a translation app.

2) Pack a deck of card / card game

A great way to break the ice when travelling solo! When you inevitably have to take that long train ride or are sat on the veranda waiting for the rain to let up, card games are a great way to bond with your fellow travellers.

3) Get some travel insurance!

This is actually more of a compulsory item than a tip, but a tip nonetheless! Get some travel insurance - tour leaders will check your documents before your trip begins.

4) Get out of your comfort zone

Going on a singles holiday for 20 - 30 year olds is a great way to get out of your comfort zone. Meet new people, taste new food, try an activity that you wouldn’t normally do if you were on your own. Group tours provide the perfect opportunity to try new things.

Solo Holidays for over 20s: FAQs

Why travel solo on a tour?

Travelling solo can be a bit intimidating and sometimes stressful - especially if it’s your first time! Group tours are the perfect way to take out the hassle of planning a trip on your own. You’ll be with a group of like-minded people which can also give you that little boost you need to step outside of your comfort zone!

What is accomodation like on Tucan Travel tours?

Accommodation varies from place to place but usually we stick to small locally-owned guesthouses, hostels and hotels to give you the most authentic experience possible. You will likely be sharing with one or two others from the same sex, however you can upgrade if you would prefer your own room.

Will I have time to myself?

Of course! Group tours don’t have to mean being herded from attraction to attraction with no time to yourself. We make sure to factor in enough free time so you can also go off on your own adventures!

What are the travel arrangements?

We aim to take out as much of the hassle as possible so that you are free to relax, explore and see the sites - so when it comes to travel, we have everything covered! Depending on where you are, expect a mixture of flights, private overland trucks, local buses and even a tuk-tuks if you’re travelling to Asia!

Can I book extra nights of accommodation in my arrival or departure city?

Most of our tours offer the option to book a couple of extra nights stay at the arrival or departure destinations so can make the most of the city you’re in.

Are flights included?

No. Although Tucan Travel do not specialise in selling flights, our travel consultants can arrange them for you to match the start and end dates of your tour.

Solo Travel In Your 30s – here’s 5 alternatives to staying home

by Steven Dillon | Apr 26, 2019

solo traveller holidays under 30

This post was written by Steve Dillon, founder of   Other Way Round , a group travel company specialising in adventure trips for 25-45 year olds. He’s passionate about encouraging fellow 30 somethings to give solo travel a try, and he shares 5 ways to go about it.

(or “vacations” for my North American friends).

If you’re anything like most people it’s what gets you through the day-to-day grind.

Looking forward to that next trip – the opportunity to relax, to disconnect, to experience something completely different.

It doesn’t get much better.

“Where are you going this year”?

If you would have asked me that when I was in my 20s I would have reeled off a list of upcoming trips with friends.

There was always something going on and the main challenge was finding the cash to get involved.

Group of 30 something solo travellers

But the first time it happened to me I had just turned 30…

I had resigned from my job and had managed to wangle a 1 week break before starting my next role.

I was in need of a break.

Desperate actually .

And I knew I would be useless at my next company without recharging my batteries first.

The problem – I couldn’t find anyone to go with.

At such short notice neither my girlfriend or friends could get the time from work and I was faced with the daunting prospect:

GO ALONE, OR DON’T GO AT ALL.

Solo travel trip in my 30s

Solo Travel in My 30s

As I’ve progressed through my 30s I’ve realised that this was just the start of things to come.

People get married, have kids, get saddled with huge mortgages.

It becomes near impossible to align schedules and finances with those closest friends.

If this sounds all too familiar, the good news is that you are not alone.

It is way more common than you think and many of us are facing the same challenge.

So what do you do?

You could decide to stay home and miss out (and sadly many people do).

But honestly, in this day and age it’s SO unnecessary.

“Solo Travel” is absolutely booming, especially for people in their 30s, and there are endless possibilities out there.

In this post I’m going to share with you 5 alternatives to staying home if you find yourself in a similar situation.

Solo travel with 30 something tour group

1. Hardcore Solo Travel

By this I mean really go all in and fully embrace the solo aspect of “solo travel”.

Plan out your own trip in full, based entirely on what YOU want to do.

There are SO MANY resources available online to help.

(some good places to start are Nomadic Matt , Adventurous Kate , Lonely Planet , Conde Nast Traveler but really if you just type your destination into Google you’ll find there’s a ridiculous wealth of information available).

Go where you want, when you want.

Don’t worry about pleasing anyone else.

Enjoy the time alone to think, get perspective on life, and renew your sense of purpose (sounds a bit cheesy I know, but it often happens).

Embrace the flexibility and freedom that comes with this option and after a while you may just wonder why you’ve never done it before.

It’s definitely character building stuff and you will likely emerge from such a trip with a new found level of resilience and independence which you can carry forth on into your daily life.

2. The Hybrid Approach to Travelling Alone

This combines the best of both worlds.

Again, plan your trip independently – book your own flights, accommodation, plan a rough itinerary etc… but put yourself in places where you are likely to meet other people along the way.

You could stay at a hostel where there’s likely to be a bunch of other travellers in their 30s sharing a similar mindset.

You could also book yourself onto day tours so you still get to go visit places with other people, but leave plenty of ‘alone time’ with the flexibility to venture off and do your own thing.

30 somethings singles holiday

Or you could even hook yourself up with a local and really get to know the place you’re visiting on a deeper level.

Platforms like Couchsurfing and Airbnb Experiences are great for connecting you with such locals for a more ‘authentic experience’.

The great thing with this approach is that you don’t have to plan too much in advance.

Most Hostels / Hotels / Airbnbs will have relationships with the local tour operators and you can typically just land, see what’s available and book something at the last minute.

3. Join an Online Travel Group

The internet is full of online communities (or travel groups) specifically catering to people in this very position – single people looking to travel solo.

They typically provide an abundance of useful information, in-depth resources and helpful tips for those thinking to travel alone.

And better still, some even organise trips which members can join.

Some great examples of such groups are:-

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls Gone International
  • Travelettes
  • Girls Love Travel

(these groups all also have huge social media followings)

Go search for something in your particular area of interest and you’re bound to find something that resonates with you.

(there are many which will specialise in bringing together singles in their 30s)

female solo travel in your 30s

4. Get Social

This is a bit more of a long game with regard to solo travel but in my opinion it’s one of the absolute best things you can do.

Here it is…

JOIN A SOCIAL CLUB IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

If you’re struggling to find friends to go on holiday with then chances are you’re also facing a similar challenge in your day-to-day life (and we all need someone to go grab a beer with on the weekend).

And yet the perfect solution is available to most of us within our local communities which typically have ‘social clubs’ for almost every interest out there.

Solo trip in my 30s hiking in Colombia

For example, in recent years I’ve been a member of the following clubs:-

  • RBS Football (London – football team)
  • One Element (London – outdoor fitness club)
  • Y Tri (Washington DC – triathlon club)
  • La Ruta Outdoor (Medellin – hiking club)

(yeah, I’ve gotten around a little)!

And without exception, in each of these communities I have met great friends, found people to hang out with on weekends and – most relevant to this blog – ended up going on HOLIDAY with other solo travellers from the group.

Sometimes it was part of an organised group trip (most social clubs do them) and other times just directly with friends I have met through these clubs.

And although these particular groups lean more towards the active side, you can bet there’s a group somewhere that covers you own personal area of interest whether that be music, dance, languages or whatever.

Go check out Meetup which is a great resource for finding such groups.

5. Go With a Tour Group

Last but not least is the option to join a tour group.

Now, I know that some people have the image of tour groups being a bit stuffy or rigid but these days there are definitely some WAY more modern versions out there.

(in fact check out this blog: Debunking 9 Myths About Small Group Tours )

Going back to the story I talked about in the intro – where none of my friends were available to holiday with me – I ended up ‘traveling solo’ for a week of ‘Spanish and Surf’ in Fuerteventura.

It was a fantastic trip, I met a bunch of fun people, and I got that much needed time to disconnect.

sailing during singles holiday for 30 somethings

Fast forward a couple of years and I joined another tour group called Medsailors for a week of ‘Sun and Sailing’ in Croatia (it was so good I went with them again to Greece the following year)!

Inspired so much by these awesome trips I then went on to create my very own tour company – Other Way Round – specialising in group tours for 30 and 40 somethings solo travellers.

These days there are tour groups for absolutely everything .

Whether you’re into yoga , skiing , meditation, dancing, hiking, biking, literature, museums, adventure or just want to party for two weeks – there’s an option out there for you.

Just type your interest and desired destination into Google and you’ll be spoilt with a bucket load of choices.

The “Right Way” to Do Travelling Solo in Your 30s

SPOILER ALERT – there is no “right way” to do solo travel in your 30s.

There is no one size fits all.

For some people the thought of Option 1 (Hardcore Solo Travel) will fill them with dread while for others it will sound like paradise.

At the other end of the scale I know people who could think of nothing worse than going on a 2 week group tour with a bunch of “strangers” while for others it’s what they enjoy most.

It all comes down to what you’re more comfortable with as an individual and what better suits your personality.

Solo travellers in their 30s chatting in Colombia

I tend to lean more towards Option 4 (Social Clubs) and Option 5 (Tour groups).

I like meeting new people and sharing experiences together.

It always takes me a bit of time to get to know new people so I prefer spending a longer period with the same group rather than meeting new people every day.

I like the bond it creates within the group and usually find that on such trips the banter is the best part.

But that’s just me and everyone is different.

The most important takeaway here is that if you’re a solo traveller in your 30s there’s definitely an option out there for you. There’s no need to miss out.

With that in mind…

Hiking in Colombia with other solo travellers 30 years old

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE – Don’t Miss Out !

If I can get only one thin g across in this blog it is to tell you not to hold yourself back.

I’m extremely passionate about this subject because I see so many single travellers in their 30s missing out because they don’t take that initial first step .

Yes, it can be tricky.

Often awkward.

Eating at a restaurant alone.

Trying to make friends in a hostel when it feels like everyone else is travelling together.

Meeting up with a new tour group or social group for the first time when you don’t know anyone.

But if you push yourself through those initial moments of pain (torture for some I know) then you will open yourself up to a whole new world of possibilities.

Go on, give it a try!

You & the world: Travel experts share their tips for traveling alone

solo traveller holidays under 30

I learned how to travel alone when I was 19 and headed to New York from Germany. It was less of a choice and more of a necessity because I needed to check out a college.

It was there, at the intersection of Lafayette and Broadway on my last day of the trip, when it hit me. I was standing in the rain looking at my soggy breakfast doggy bag but I felt exhilarated. Wet, all by myself and I felt free like never before.

From then, traveling alone became my thing. Sometimes because there wasn’t anyone to accompany me. The concept of not going and waiting for the right travel partner always seemed foreign to me (pun intended).

I have now traveled to over 20 countries by myself and even published a book about traveling alone and why I love it so much. In this article, 12 experienced solo travelers and I share our best solo travel tips with you.

Traveling alone: Why, where & how

Where and how to start if you want to travel alone? In this article you will find:

  • Why you should travel alone
  • How to travel alone

How to prepare for solo vacations

Things to do alone traveling.

  • How to meet people when traveling alone

Safety tips for traveling alone

  • How to travel alone as a woman

Final solo travel tips

Why you should travel alone at least once in your life.

For me, traveling alone is both a practical consideration and an indulgence. There were many times when an opportunity for a trip came up, but I simply didn’t have anyone to join. All my friends and family were busy or I didn’t have a partner at the time. I didn’t want to wait for an ever-moving “one day”, so I went alone.

The other reason why I love solo travel is the freedom. I can ask myself what I want and go and do it. I don’t need to compromise and can be wonderfully self-centered for a change.

Sometimes this can be hard as we often don’t even know anymore what we want. And we fear getting called irresponsible, spoiled or self-centered.

I think it is okay to be all of that once in a while and to simply follow your heart. “You do you” should be the anthem of solo travel.

A man in a white outfit and brown blazer happily walking down a cobbled street in front of classic building stalls.

And don’t worry – traveling by yourself is not as scary as some make it out to be. Those who do have probably never tried it themselves.

How to travel alone?

You have decided that you want to travel alone but now what? And where to? For some reason, many people equate solo travel with backpacking. I don’t think that is true at all. You don’t have to stay in a hostel and rough it and you don’t need to be young.

Solo travel simply means leaving home alone and going on a trip. You can go anywhere you want. Get inspiration from the list of best solo travel destinations, but ultimately simply ask yourself where you want to go. For some the thought of a European road trip is enticing, others feel called to trek through the jungle in Borneo. And many just long to travel somewhere where they won’t need a passport.

If you’re nervous about taking a solo trip, practice at home! Start by taking yourself out for a meal, then look for activities to do solo, like seeing a movie or going to a museum. Stefanie Waldek, travel writer

“If you’re nervous about taking a solo trip, practice at home! Start by taking yourself out for a meal, then look for activities to do solo, like seeing a movie or going to a museum,” says travel writer Stefanie Waldek . You can practice traveling alone in small steps like this. And maybe after a few excursions, you’ll feel ready to take your newfound knowledge on the road.

Remember, solo travel can be anything you want it to be, big or small, near or far.

A woman sitting on the bed with her luggage, using her tablet computer.

Just like any other trip, preparation is key. “I had a lot of excitement and anxiety leading up to my solo trip, but what made it a lot more manageable and ultimately more fun for me was doing a lot of planning before,” says Jesse Woods, VP for SEO at KAYAK. Even if you are usually one to wing it, planning is key when traveling alone.

To me, that means booking accommodation for at least a few nights after arrival and figuring out how to get from the airport (or train station) to my hotel or guesthouse. I also think packing light is key when you travel by yourself. This way you don’t need to rely on a travel buddy to watch your things while heading to the bathroom and can move more freely.

Mark Chestnut, a travel writer and photographer, advises: “Bring reading material in both digital and hard-copy formats. You may sometimes find yourself stranded without WiFi – or even a television or a charged cell phone.” I would add a portable battery charger and make sure to pack all essentials in your hand luggage. This includes medication, electronics, wallet and other valuables, I also add a toothbrush, my glasses and a spare set of underwear.

Bring reading material in both digital and hard-copy formats. You may sometimes find yourself stranded without WiFi – or even a television or a charged cell phone. Mark Chestnut, travel writer

When planning what to do at your destination keep in mind the season you are traveling. Are there popular vacation times or holidays to consider? In this case, I’d advise booking some activities in advance. If you are traveling during the off-season, you can be a bit more flexible.

Will I get bored or feel lonely? This is a big worry for many who embark on their first solo adventure. I would counter this with another question: how often do you get bored at home? While many of us live with family or roommates, we also spend quite a bit of time on our own without getting bored. Add to that the excitement of a foreign city or country and chances are, no, you won’t get bored.

Most activities are as much fun on your own, and for everything else, there are group tours. “I look for free walking tours with good reviews. They introduce me to places I may not have ventured to on my own, I learn where locals eat and meet other travelers,” says Harriet Baskas , founder of stuckattheairport.com.

In the worst-case scenario, you will connect with other travelers for just a few hours while learning something new and noteworthy about your destination. In the best case, you make new friends for a sundowner or future trips.

When arriving in a new place solo, get out and go for a meandering run with no plan. If you’re not a runner, just wander. You’ll soon get a feel for the place and settle in a bit. You’ll probably discover some surprises too. Gabriel Leigh, travel writer

And maybe you will want to spend some time on your own. After all, being alone doesn’t equate to feeling lonely. “When arriving in a new place solo, get out and go for a meandering run with no plan. If you’re not a runner, just wander. You’ll soon get a feel for the place and settle in a bit. You’ll probably discover some surprises too,” says travel writer Gabriel Leigh.

Use the no-compromise rule when traveling alone and follow your guts. Do something you would never do with your spouse or couldn’t do with your kids. Indulge, be adventurous or simply sit and people-watch.

How to meet people when traveling alone?

Friends walking the streets of Recife, Pernambuco

If you do want company, remember that traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to be alone 24/7. There is no solo travel police checking that you are doing it right and meeting new people is part of the fun, after all.

Pauline Langlois, a SEO project manager at KAYAK, says: “Using the Couchsurfing app is a great way to meet travelers and locals when you’re traveling alone. The app is not just for finding a couch to sleep on; it’s a community where you can ask for advice, get recommendations and join events organized by ambassadors.”

Whether you feel comfortable staying on a stranger’s couch or not, the right accommodation is key when traveling alone. “For meeting people, I find it best to stay at hostels. Some have single rooms and they’re not all party hostels,” says Federica Ciancetta, video editor at KAYAK.

I agree with her and remember Moustache Hostel in Jaipur fondly. I arrived there after breaking up with my boyfriend at the time. What was meant to be a romantic trip for two had all of a sudden turned into an involuntary solo trip. To make the best of it, I booked a single room at Moustache and a walking tour organized by the hostel as soon as I arrived. Friends for life were made on this tour.

Be an extrovert. When traveling solo, don’t just sit in the corner of a café with your phone or journal. Engage with other travelers and locals with questions, comments or even just a cheerful greeting. Bill Flink, travel writer

Hostels are also great if you are an introvert or a bit shy. Travel writer and photographer Bill Flink recommends: “Be an extrovert. When traveling solo, don’t just sit in the corner of a café with your phone or journal. Engage with other travelers and locals with questions, comments or even just a cheerful greeting.

”Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it and a hostel with a nice atmosphere can help you with that. I enjoy the company of others, so when I have traveled alone, I have prioritized getting to know people. I’ve done this through couch surfing, reaching out and asking if others wanted to meet for a coffee or do things together,” says Fie Korum, head of content marketing at KAYAK.

I too have made a friend while simply striking up a conversation from one cafe table to the next at a beach in Koh Tao. Eventually, I awkwardly asked “would you like to have dinner sometime?” and ended up with a new friend abroad.

Do check KAYAK’s list of the top safest solo travel destinations as it is a great source of inspiration. However, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor. Safety can be quite an illusion and it’s important to have common sense wherever you travel.

Still, some general tips to help keep you safe when traveling alone:

  • “I find it important to always have a sense of self-awareness and even a healthy dose of anxiety. Traveling alone means no one else is looking out for you so it’s key to be extra vigilant about your personal belongings and safety,” says travel journalist Ramsey Quebein . Even feeling a bit on edge will keep you more vigilant and ultimately safer.
  • Read hotel reviews from other solo travelers and pay attention to their comments about the area. To navigate a new city, Marta Krywult, organic growth manager at KAYAK, recommends downloading an offline maps app like Maps.me before your trip. This way you can navigate without relying on internet access.
  • I always like to have an emergency fund at hand. This way I can pay for a taxi instead of local transport when I first arrive, or use apps like Uber or Grab in Southeast Asia. Apps like these make it easier to get around, especially when in a country where you don’t speak the language and you can review drivers.
  • “Share your location and/or itinerary with 1-2 close family or friends and check in with them regularly throughout your trip,” advises Sarah Rauth, manager for brand marketing at KAYAK. It’s not only nice to keep in touch with your loved ones at home but this also adds a layer of safety.
  • Get trip and travel health insurance and read the Travel Advisories. While I think those are sometimes overly cautious, some insurances won’t cover you when going to a destination with a travel warning.
  • Make digital copies of your important documents and email them to yourself. This way you can still identify yourself if something gets lost or stolen.
  • Travelers’ cheques and large amounts of cash are cumbersome in most places. Instead, take at least two credit cards and don’t keep them in the same place.
  • At the beginning I like to eat early and close to my accommodation in the evening. This way, I can be home before it gets dark.

How do you travel alone as a woman?

A senior woman leans on a fence with a background of the famous Tower Bridge across the river.

Solo travel for women has become more than a trend in recent years, it is almost a movement. I have quite a bit of experience traveling alone as a woman and will admit – while nothing will deter me, it would be ignorant to say that men and women always travel the same.

There are countries and situations where I have to adapt and adjust to feel safe. My most important rule: I am not afraid to offend and to say no. I’d rather be reserved and maybe a little bit cold than overly friendly. Simply because this can be misconstrued in certain cultures and situations.

If I’m feeling in any way uncomfortable I won’t tell strangers or someone I just met where I’m staying. Some women like to put on a fake wedding band, but I thankfully never saw the need for that.

In many countries like Japan, India and the UAE, there are taxis and public transport just for women. I will use this option sometimes, especially in the evening.

Ultimately I think most women know how to navigate this world and what we need to do to keep ourselves safe(r). This applies to our homes and the rest of the world. However, just like on any other trip, I do make sure to check customs and local dress code before traveling somewhere new.

Especially when heading to a more conservative country, covering up may or may not keep you safe but always shows respect toward the locals. After all, you are a visitor and I think respecting local culture is essential to any trip.

It’s okay if some days feel a bit off. Not everything will run smoothly and not every travel day will be fun. I allow myself to miss home, stay in my hotel room to binge Netflix and order pizza. Sometimes finding a bit of routine is just what I need to enjoy the adventure again.

Share the memories you are making. This can be through a journal, an Instagram account or simply by sending pictures to your family at home. I usually Facetime with my mother who is always amazed that I can bring the world to her living room thanks to technology.

And remember – it’s okay to not like traveling alone. Once you’ve tried it, that is.

Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: August 13, 2024

Table of Contents

Sales tax holiday dates.

For 2024, the sales tax holiday was on:

  • Saturday, August 10  and
  • Sunday, August 11 .

Do You Qualify?

The sales tax holiday applies only to eligible retail items bought for personal use by individuals.

What remains taxable?

  • Purchases by corporations or other businesses
  • Purchases by individuals for business use.

What retail items do not qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption?

The following items are still taxable and do  not  qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption:

  • Motor vehicles
  • Telecommunications services
  • Electricity
  • Tobacco products
  • Marijuana or marijuana products
  • Alcoholic beverages, and
  • Any single item whose price is more than $2,500.

What about internet sales?  Do those sales qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption?

Yes. An item will qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption if you order and pay for an eligible item over the internet:

  • On the sales tax holiday and
  • During Eastern Daylight Time.

No sales tax is due on that purchase, even if delivery of the item occurs after the sales tax holiday weekend.

What about layaway sales?

Layaway sales do not qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption.

Do rentals qualify for the sales tax holiday?

If you rent an item that qualifies for the sales tax holiday exemption, you can use the sales tax holiday for rentals of up to 30 days .

However, the rental must be paid for in full on the holiday weekend.

Exempt rentals do not include:

  • motor vehicles or
  • motorboats.

Do all retailers have to participate in the sales tax holiday?

Yes. All businesses must take part in the sales tax holiday if the business:

  • Normally makes taxable sales of tangible property in Massachusetts or to purchasers in Massachusetts and
  • Is open for business on August 10 and 11.

Limitations

Is there a limit to the retail value to which the sales tax holiday exemption applies.

Yes. The sales tax holiday exemption is limited to eligible sales of items costing $2,500 or less.

What if I spend more than $2,500 on an item?

If you spend more than $2,500 on an item, the entire amount paid for the item is subject to sales tax, not just the amount that exceeds that threshold.

What if I purchase multiple items that each cost $2,500 or less, but the total price is more than $2,500?  Are all items eligible for the sales tax holiday exemption?

If the price of each individual item is $2,500 or less, you can combine as many items as you want, tax-free, even if the combined items cost more than $2,500.

Is there an exemption on clothing?

Yes. An item of clothing is generally exempt from the sales tax unless the item costs more than $175.

For items that cost more than $175, only the amount over $175 is subject to tax.

On the sales tax holiday, if the price of an item of clothing is less than or equal to  $2,500, the entire amount is not subject to tax.

On the sales tax holiday, if the price of an item of clothing  is more than  $2,500, the first $175 is not subject to tax but the rest would be.

A business has advertised that a purchase I made prior to the sales tax holiday weekend can be canceled and re-booked on the holiday.  Can I do that and avoid paying sales tax?

No. You can’t cancel your prior purchase and re-book the purchase on the sales tax holiday weekend to avoid the sales tax if you:

  • Put down a deposit on,
  • Prepaid for or
  • Otherwise promised to pay for an eligible item prior to the sales tax holiday weekend.

Do I have to take home an item I purchase on the sales tax holiday weekend for that purchase to qualify for the sales tax holiday exemption?

No. If you pay for the item in full on the sales tax holiday weekend, you can arrange for delivery of the item after the sales tax holiday weekend.

After the Sales Tax Holiday

What happens if i exchange or return an item once the sales tax holiday has ended.

No tax is due even if the exchange is made after the holiday. You will not be subject to the tax retroactively.

What do I do if I find that I was charged sales tax on an eligible item purchased during the sales tax holiday?

If you were charged tax in error, the business that you bought your item from is responsible for giving you a refund of the tax you paid.

To determine the amount of your refund, you should provide the business with your:

  • Other proof of purchase.

What happens if I am a retailer that accidentally collects sales tax this weekend?

Any sales or use tax erroneously collected on the sales tax holiday weekend must be remitted to DOR.

If a customer seeks a refund of tax collected in error from you, you must refund the tax to the customer. If you have already remitted the tax to DOR, you may file an amended return to recover amounts refunded to customers.

How do I report exempt sales on my August return?

On Line 2 “Exempt Sales” of the August Sales and Use Tax Return, you will report the sales amount of the items not charged tax during the two days designated for the Sales Tax Holiday.
