I'm currently playing with a set of old Tour Edge XCG3 irons (dating back to 2011). I'd probably hang on to them, but I bought them cheap with stiff steel shafts at the time.

Yeah, well, now I'm knocking on the door of 50 and all that goes along with that.

Price is a factor in all of this after a series of air conditioning disasters and some unpleasant business with failing GM brake calipers. Cheap is good.

These are on sale for $459, delivered, 4-PW with regular flex graphite shafts, and I was thinking about having a punt:

Remember, I'm a modest 16 handicap! - but I do play to it. I guess I'm looking for something easier to hit, without going to true GI shovels.

I like the idea of still having a proper 4 iron, not a hybrid. For whatever reason, I still hit a 4 iron pretty well. My one concession to vanity.

Thanks for any advice, especially from those who may have hit one of these irons.

I'm not sure what everyone here thinks, but I'm a fan of the Tour Edge C522's. Any of the Tour Edge C500's (the last two digits are just the year they came out) are great clubs. 

My golf league teammate bought two sets of the C522's last year for his sons, to get them into the game and I think they great clubs. I've owned a set myself in the past and been happy with them. My dad also used to have a set.  They are basically one trick ponies. They hit it high and straight. But, honestly, they couldn't be any easier to hit. 

If you are looking to do shot shaping, these probably aren't for you. But if you want forgiveness, these are your clubs.

Done deal. Thanks for the recommendation to Rock Bottom Golf (where my original XCG3s came from a dozen years ago!), but I specifically wanted 4 -PW. Turns out that in exchange for my Gmail address, Tour Edge gave me 15% off, so I got out the door for a hair over $400 including Virginia's usurious sales tax. I'll take that.

One of our cc members use these that I know of. He is a Tour Edge geek and have heard nothing but good things. He is in the 11-12 HCP range.

I have been using TE driver (C721) for last year and a half and recommend it highly. 

I think TE products are as good as any. Underated with a great price point. Have fun!

Thanks for the recommendation to Rock Bottom Golf (where my original XCG3s came from a dozen years ago!), but I specifically wanted 4 -PW. I was in the same boat. I was an Exotics geek. I played Tour Edge Exclusively from 2013-2020 when I switched to Srixon. After some dilutions of grandeur and going through both varieties of the 2019 and 2021 models of Srixon irons. I took inventory. Golf is Hard (R) why in the hell am I making it harder. So on a whim, I took a trip to Golf Galaxy. Looking for more forgiving irons. I ended up getting the E722 irons on Clearance. I traded in all my Srixon clubs. Sold my Z785 irons to a fellow member at the course.

Let me tell you something. The E722 irons are the most forgiving clubs I have ever played period. They might actually be too forgiving for me. I should probably be playing the C line. (I actually have worked friggin’ hard this year to improve).   

The only drawback I find is there is no 4 and 5 iron. I can’t even order them. So me who hates hybrids has to suck it up and play hybrids. Though I play the C722 model for my hybrids.

I have not tried the Hot Launch versions of the irons. (i.e. the C500 and E500 models), I’ve been toying with it. Especially if I can find a C521 or C522 set relatively cheap.

Tour Edge: The Little Company That Can

Founded in 1986, Tour Edge has carved out a niche for itself as a mid-sized club manufacturer that appeals to many for its quality equipment and low-price points. Now it seeks more.

There’s a joke that seldom fails to elicit a chuckle from anyone working in the golf club business. It asks, "How do you make a small fortune in the golf equipment industry?" The answer? "Start with a large one."

Over the years, many small and mid-sized golf club makers have found sustaining profitability challenging. Yet, David Glod, founder, president and master club designer of Tour Edge, one of the game’s most highly regarded, yet lesser-known, club manufacturers, doesn’t find much humor here.

Glod, 60, played on the same Florida Southern University golf team as Rocco Mediate, Lee Jansen and Marco Dawson and that won the 1984 NCAA Championship. After graduating and serving a short stint as a PGA club professional, Glod started Tour Edge in 1986. Since then, he and his brother Gordon, who joined the company shortly after its beginning and now works as its vice president of sales, have kept Tour Edge not just alive, but thriving. The key to their success has come packaged in a balanced formula of fiscal conservatism, innovative technology and the production of premium clubs sold at a price point lower than its bigger name-brand OEM competitors.

"David’s focus has always been as a club designer and engineer," says Jon Claffey, the company’s vice president of marketing. He adds that as a cautious businessperson by nature, Glod has previously resisted the decision to market his company’s products more aggressively. Claffey cites countless small-scale club manufacturers that eventually failed precisely because after initial success in the marketplace and on tour they tried to grow too rapidly.

Nick Sherburne, founder of Club Champion, a custom clubfitting company, offers the following perspective on Tour Edge’s quality, as well as its potential moving forward.

"Tour Edge is one of the smaller niche brands that I truly believe is on par from a manufacturing and R-and-D standpoint with the larger OEMs," he said. "That’s why they have had the staying power they’ve shown over the years and why they possess great growth potential going forward. This also happens to be the reasons why we carry them at Club Champion.”

Consider, for instance, Tour Edge’s Exotics three-metal model, which was introduced in 2010 and was the first fairway metal to weld a titanium face to its stainless-steel body. The club caught the attention of many top PGA Tour players, who quickly put it in play. Before long, scores of Tour players started using Tour Edge drivers , irons and hybrids as well — all without endorsement payments from the company. To date Tour Edge clubs have been used in a combined 26 PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions victories.

Tour Edge has taken an old-school approach to marketing. Rather than investing in large endorsement contracts with well-known tour players to use its clubs, Tour Edge has relied on a word-of-mouth method.

And it works.

“Tour Edge has never had an unprofitable year in its 36 years of doing business,” Claffey says, “… over the past two-and-a half years, because of the industry-wide, pandemic-driven boom across all segments of the golf industry, our company has notched a record rate of growth. This has included an increase in our number of employees by 35 percent as well as a doubling of our sales force.”

Tour Edge is hopeful of moving more of its users to the Exotics line of clubs.

Tour Edge also produces two other sub-brands, which along with the Exotics strive to cover the gauntlet of every skill level of golfer. In addition to the Exotics, the Tour Edge catalog includes Hot Launch, a high-performing game improvement line of clubs, and the Get in the Game collection, which compiles complete sets of clubs that may appeal to casual or beginning golfers of all types on a budget.

When Glod hired Claffey approximately five years ago, the mandate was to bolster Tour Edge’s name recognition and profile beyond the word-of-mouth method it had long relied on.

Glancing at once both back and ahead, David Glod now says: “We’ve sustained enough growth recently to be able to invest more heavily in marketing, especially via the PGA Tour Champions and the Golf Channel. … the idea is to move more of our clients into our premium brand Exotics clubs, and that is where most of the thrust of the advertising dollars we’re now spending is going.”

Indeed, Tour Edge has signed an impressive roster of PGA Tour Champions players to represent the company and play its clubs. The list includes Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Scott McCarron, Duffy Waldorf, Tim Petrovic, Mike Weir, Alex Cejka and Ken Duke, all of whom participate in the company’s new advertising campaigns that promote the brand’s new E722 and C722 drivers.

Tour Edge also has an engaging, folksy, almost home-movie-like TV ad spot featuring two-sport superstar Bo Jackson riffing on the old “Bo Knows” Nike slogan for which he made famous. This time, though, Jackson, looking surprised himself, says, “I don’t know” to communicate that he isn’t sure which of Tour Edge’s two new Exotics drivers — the E722 or the C722 best fits his golf swing — he should play. The spot also doubles as an invitation for golfers to book a session with an authorized Tour Edge club fitter to test which driver works best.

Kit Mungo, who manages Club Champion’s Agoura Hills, California, store, finds the plethora of technology Glod has packed into both models of Tour Edge’s new drivers most impressive. The company’s more forgiving E722, played on the PGA Tour Champions by Langer and Weir, and the smaller, more compact 445cc C722, played on Tour by McCarron, Petrovic and Cjeka, which offers less forgiveness on off-center hits, but rewards high-speed swingers.

The E722 has only a single weight port on the back of the clubhead, whereas the C722 adds another one positioned on its front close to the clubface. However, as Mungo says. “By trying various weight plug combinations on the C’s clubhead, and by finding the appropriate shaft for a given player, we can fit even the ‘C’ or so-called player’s model to golfers with less than super high swing speeds.”

So, how does David Glod feel about Tour Edge’s recent growth spurt and the prospects and risks involved in nurturing it further into a bigger company?

“I don’t know,” Glod replies, “We’re in the middle of such a growth spurt right now, so I’ll have to get back to you on that one.”

Here are the best golf clubs for kids:

I haven’t been able to look over every single set out there, but these 5 sets all seemed to be well built. They can all be used by both girls and boys and 4 of the 5 come in different sizes. I tried to find some that were cheaper and some that were a bit higher quality. All of them are solid though and should do the job just fine.

If you’re on a budget or are just trying to see whether or not your kid enjoys golf, these clubs will probably be for you. They’re the cheapest set on this list and they come in a wide range of colors, sizes , and you can pick between left and right-handed.

The reason they’re ranked #5 is that they’re the lowest quality on this list. I found them to be better than other sets on the market but I probably wouldn’t recommend them if they’ll be used a lot.

They didn’t seem poorly made or anything like that but they were a little bit heavy and probably wouldn’t withstand years of smashing into the ground. If they’ll be used occasionally or just to hit around the backyard then go for it. If they’ll be used quite a bit then go for one of the other choices. Check the current price on Amazon .

If you want something that’s a bit higher quality then this set could be perfect for you.  It comes in both left and right-handed and you can pick between different colors and sizes. It’s a little bit more expensive than the previous X7 but the clubs and bag seem to be a bit higher quality.

The medium and large sets come with a driver, hybrid, iron, wedge, and a putter . If you get the bigger set then it’ll also include a fairway wood. And yes, all the sets do come with a bag. It wasn’t the most comfortable but it was still decent.

The clubs this set came with all seemed to be pretty decent but the bag on the Wilson set seemed to be quite a bit better. If you don’t like the colors of the Wilson set then you’ll be fine going with this one. Check the price on Amazon .

• I like the way the bag looks.
• The bag wasn’t quite as good as the Wilson.
• The first one is all I can think of.

If you’re looking for a set that’s under $150 then this one will probably be for you. It wasn’t my favorite on this list but it’s the best option in this price range. The clubs were all solid and the bag was a bit better than the previous Tour Edge.

You can pick between right and left-handed, it comes in a few different sizes, and it also comes in different colors. The smallest set comes with a driver, iron, wedge, and putter . The medium sets come with an extra hybrid and the bigger sets also come with another iron.

The only downsides I could see with this set was the bag and grips. The bag was the best in this price range but it wasn’t as comfortable as some of the more expensive sets. I noticed the grips were a little thin on them but you could possibly put larger ones on if it’s an issue. Check the price on Amazon .

• It has all the basic clubs you’d need.
• The bag is more comfortable than others in this price range.
• The grips are a little bit thin.
• The bag won’t be as durable as the higher-end options.

If you’re looking for an entire set for a teenager then these will be your best bet. They only come in one size unfortunately and will only fit kids between 60 and 65 inches . They’re also the most expensive set on this list.

If these clubs had size options to pick from then they’d be my number 1 pick. The bag seems to be well built and it comes with a driver, fairway wood, hybrid, 6 irons, and a putter . They all seem to be really solid.

The one thing you might want to consider with these is that your kid can grow into them. Even if they’re a bit big right now you still might be able to get 3-6 years out of them . That’s pretty good in my opinion. Check the price on Amazon .

• The quality is the best on this list.
• You could have them for a pretty long time.
• The price is quite high.
• They only come in one size and color.

If you’re looking for a quality set but the Cobra is a bit big or you don’t want to spend that much money, these could be perfect for you. I don’t think they’re quite as good as the Cobra but they do come in different colors and sizes.

The smallest size comes with a fairway wood, iron, wedge, and putter . The medium size comes with an extra driver and iron. The biggest size comes with an extra hybrid. All the clubs seem to be of high quality.

The reason I like this set over the Wilson set is that the bag is better and the clubs seem more durable. I’ve always been a fan of Callaway myself and that’s probably part of the reason I like the way they feel. Check the price on Amazon .

How does it feel? The C524 produced a lively and solid thud with a reasonably high-pitched impact noise. It wasn't too high, but it was noticeably higher Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Family  or the TaylorMade Qi10 range .

The combination of solid performance, an excellent aesthetic and a premium make the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 a great driver at a remarkably modest price. We think there's some serious value here and would therefore recommend it as best drivers for beginners we've tried.

Tour Edge Exotics E723 Driver

The “E” in its name stands for Extreme Spec, meaning it’s designed to help average golfers to the extreme. This ultra-premium 460cc driver is also crammed with technology, such as an extreme low-and-rear CG position that produces an extremely high MOI of 5600 g/cm2 – that’s the highest MOI driver Tour Edge has ever made, making it one of the  most forgiving drivers  around.

There are also multiple other technological aspects, like a Flight Tuning System and thin titanium ridgeback spine running from the center of the face through the crown which, in testing, produced an easy to flight trajectory, as well as a solid impact sound and long distance. 

Along with the performance, the E723 has a very long crown from face to rear, with the graphics of the crown, a black stripe down the middle flanked by a weaved dark graphite pattern, framing the ball nicely. Overall, we thought it was pleasing to the eye, especially as the face seems nice and tall and the clubhead felt rather substantial through our swing.

Tour Edge Exotics C723 Driver

Whereas the E in the E723 stands for Extreme Spec, the C in the C723 stands for Competition Spec, meaning this driver is for more advanced players. Despite this, out of the box, we found it to be one of the most adjustable player’s drivers on the market, with this low-spin model loaded with tech. 

We thought the aesthetics were stealthy and attractive to look at when addressed behind the ball. The darker band down the middle nicely frames the alignment you want to swing through, with the thin titanium ridgeback spine running from the center of the face and crown. 

Performance-wise, we found there to be a lot of adjustability options and, when we swapped the standard 5-gram front and 15-gram rear weights, it resulted in a change of around 300rpm of spin. We could also slide the rear CG weight to one of five positions which influenced a fade or draw up to seven yards. On the course, this driver felt extremely solid with respect to feel and impact sound - a box that all the  best golf drivers  tick.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Driver

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver was designed to offer golfers the ultimate in playability and forgiveness. Keying that performance is a low, deep CG placement that has been made possible by a lightweight carbon fiber crown and a 30-gram fixed weight in the back of the sole. That combination offers incredibly high MOI, which results in more accurate golf shots regardless of strike location.

Do not assume, however, that the E722 driver is a one-trick pony. Certainly, the forgiveness it provides is a standout feature, but this driver also delivers when it comes to ball speed. Tour Edge’s Diamond Face VFT clubface design utilizes 61 diamond-shaped sections that vary in thickness. The diamonds, which Tour Edge says act as mini trampolines, deliver consistent ball speeds from strike locations across the clubface.

Tour Edge also has worked hard to improve the sound and feel of the E722 driver by utilizing an internal ribbing system to diffuse sound at impact. Additionally, while the E722 might be described as a game improvement driver, it also offers the customization that better players want. The E722’s adjustable sleeve features eight settings that allow golfers to adjust loft by +/- 2 degrees and lie angle by 3 degrees to help anyone achieve exactly what they’re looking for in terms of launch, spin, and shot shape.

Tour Edge Exotics E723 Iron

The E723 is an ultra-premium, very sleek-looking,  game-improvement iron  that is loaded with technology. The most notable aspect of technology is Tour Edge's VIBRCOR – which is a TPU that’s strategically injected into the hollow body, deep 360-degree undercut pocket to provide excellent feel. 

In testing, we were extremely impressed with the forgiveness on offer. Regardless of where the ball was struck, the VIBRCOR on the back of the clubhead and the Diamond Face VFT, which comprises 92 diamond shapes of three different thicknesses behind the face, meant it was extremely lively on the expanded sweet spot.

At address, we thought that the look was very confidence-inspiring. Most notably, there’s a slight bulge low and an inviting amount of offset, with a thick topline also giving freedom to swing hard at the ball. In testing, it was super easy to hit and the shots got airborne with distance very well.

Tour Edge Exotics C723 Iron

The C723 also features VIBRCOR technology like we see in the E723, but the C723 is designed for the slightly more confident ball striker, with the most notable differences being the smaller clubhead, thinner top line and shorter blade length.

We found it still had full-face forgiveness and ball speed though, with the Diamond Face VFT also present throughout. Again, in testing, the impact experience was certainly very addictive, with the ball springing off the face with a powerful yet subtle sensation. Importantly, it was not too loud or harsh and we thought it was comparable with the  best compact mid-handicap irons . 

As mentioned, it is slightly smaller at address, but Tour Edge have constructed the C723 out of high-strength, military grade maraging steel. This helps make way for a significantly thinner face, the thinnest in any Exotics iron ever and also helped dramatically increase face flex across a larger surface area of the clubface. This meant we were able to eke out a lot of distance when struck properly.

Why the Tour Championship is going to look drastically different this year at East Lake

When the Tour Championship returns to its familiar host venue, East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, it will look anything but familiar.

The club has just completed the most extensive restoration of the course since Rees Jones redesigned it in the mid-1990s when the PGA Tour was negotiating with the club to become a regular host of the event (East Lake has been the site of the Tour Championship continuously since 2004).

This time around the architect is Andrew Green, whose recent reinventions of Inverness Club (in 2018), Congressional’s Blue Course (2020) and Scioto Country Club (2022) have helped elevate those clubs in the America’s 100 Greatest Courses rankings . He also orchestrated a major remodel of Oak Hill’s East Course , host of the 2023 PGA Championship, in 2019.

Tom Bendelow actually laid out the original course at East Lake, back when it was known as Atlanta Athletic Club, and that was the layout upon which Stewart Maiden taught the game to the now-legendary Bobby Jones. Donald Ross basically built a new course on the same spot in 1915, which remained untouched until changes were made before the 1963 Ryder Cup. Rees Jones redesigned most holes beginning in the mid-90s, making the course more reflective of his views of championship golf. East Lake will undergo another major renovation following the 2023 Tour Championship, this time by Andrew Green, who will highlight the Donald Ross heritage.

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK

Green’s work at East Lake, which wrapped up in the late spring, is being called a restoration, but to viewers, it will appear as a transformation. No holes were rerouted (although numerous greens were shifted)—but little else remains the same.

While East Lake is a historic property—Bobby Jones grew up playing the course, and Donald Ross conducted its first major remodel in 1915—the golf course felt and played more modern than vintage and bore only a glancing resemblance to the course Jones and Ross knew. The concept of the renovation was to take the course back to an earlier version, one that better embodied the design Ross left behind at East Lake.

Green used an aerial from 1949, over a decade before architect George Cobb’s revised the course for the 1963 Ryder Cup, to guide the restoration. The photo shows Ross’ bunkering at a smaller scale than what was developed by Cobb, and later, Jones—a style Green interpreted as being deep-welled with steep grass faces based on his knowledge of other Ross courses. The bunkers, repositioned as much as possible to where Ross had located them, have a sharper top edge that give them enhanced definition, and they can cause issues when balls settle too close to the face.

READING THE GREENS

In the years after World War II, East Lake, like many clubs in the southeast, began maintaining two green surfaces on each hole, one with cool season bentgrass that could be played over the winter months, and another with Bermudagrass that goes dormant when it’s cold but thrives in the heat.

Sometimes the two putting surfaces were set side by side, and on other holes, the Bermuda green might be placed in the front section of the green pad and the bent at the rear, or vice versa. Green used these old arrangements to inspire his redesign of the green complexes, using the old double-green outlines to inform the shapes of the new greens, now planted with TifEagle.

The greens, which sit lower and more tightly connected to their surroundings, are also larger and feature expanded perimeter options for hole locations. The putting surface at the uphill par-3 second is over 9,000 square feet, nearly 3,000 square feet larger than previously with a sinister back left pin placement perched over a swale.

In addition to the retro-refurbished bunkers and greens, Green recontoured the fairways to create more movement and slide. In dry conditions, they’ll run faster with the switch to Zorro Zoysia. Tees have also been adjusted to emphasize more shot shaping, and the course underwent significant tree removal, which in effect draws greater attention to the lovely mature individual species that remain.

The yardage has only slightly increased to 7,455 yards, and the par is now 71 versus 70 because the downhill 14th will be played as a par 5 as it does for the members (the tour moved the tees up and played it as a par 4 during Tour Championships).

The key to scoring well at East Lake remains the same: Keep the ball out of the bristly Bermuda rough. But the shots into and around the green will offer more variety with the expanded hole locations, as well as more options for recovery with added short-grass surrounds.

One of the most fascinating changes has been to the 16th green complex. The blind green was formerly turned right to left over a bunker with mounding toward the rear. The putting surface is now narrower and much deeper, and the entire right side and right rear over the green, not visible from the fairway, has been carved away, tumbling eight feet down into a chipping area depression. Players who hunt for pins on the right side have no room to miss and many will be pitching back up from a bilnd position.
