Crawley boss apologises

Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey has apologised on behalf of his captain after Jay Williams' late tackle led to Brighton's new signing Matt O'Riley hobbling off injured inside eight minutes at the Amex.

Seagulls fan were looking forward to seeing their £25m man's debut against Crawley - and were left instead to worry about his fitness after a promising start to the season.

Fan account Brighton Bubble has described Williams' challeneg as a 'horror tackle'. What do you think - was it malicious or just mistimed?

Barrow beat Derby on penalties!

What a result for Barrow!

The League Two side held on at Holker Street against newly-promoted Championship outfit Derby to force penalties after a 0-0 stalemate - and performed superbly from the spot to knock out the Rams in astonishing fashion.

Some BIG second round upsets...

Leyton Orient have knocked out Championship side Millwall with a 1-0 win, holding on after Dan Agyei opened the scoring in the 14th minute.

Meanwhile, fellow Championship outfit Blackburn have crashed out of the competition after losing 2-1 to Blackpool - and Barnsley have won 1-0 against Sheffield United.

But it's not the biggest upset of the night...!

Goal: What a strike from Winks!

Harry Winks gets what he deserves after an excellent afternoon at the King Power, netting without doubt the goal of the game.

Hamza Choudury passes the ball to the ex-Spurs midfielder some way outside the penalty area, but it doesn't deter him from having a pop - and Winks' strike thunders through the Tranmere bodies into the bottom left hand corner.

Leceister 4-0 up now. Game over.

Goal: Crystal Palace 3-0 Norwich

Crystal Palace are heading towards their first win of the season in emphatic fashion, taking their lead to 3-0 against Championship side Norwich.

Eberechi Eze dances down the wing before cutting a ball back to Jean-Philippe Mateta on the penalty spot, who picks up his second of the evening with an excellent strike.

Goal: Brighton 4-0 Crawley

Captain Adam Webster thunders his header into the Crawley net from a Brighton corner to put the home side 3-0 up.

Moments later, Mark O'Mahoney makes it two goals in less than two minutes to cap off a great display at the Amex.

Meanwhile, Preston's Milutin Osmajic has scored a hat-trick against Harrogate, taking the visitors to a 5-0 lead.

It's raining goals this evening!

Goal: Everton 3-0 Doncaster

The floodgates have opened at Goodison Park - and boy does that feel good for Toffees fans!

Beto - who has struggled for goals of late - breathes a huge sigh of relief after calmly finishing off an excellent move from the home side, poking the ball past the goalkeeper to fire Everton 3-0 ahead.

Hopefully that will build momentum for the Toffees ahead of their Premier League clash against Bournemouth this weekend.

Goal: Unbelievable goal!

My word! Jean-Philippe Mateta has just scored a stunning overhead kick to put Crystal Palace 2-0 up.

After being denied a glorious goal from Eberechi Eze in the first half, that one felt good at Selhurst Park!

Oliver Glasner's side are heading to the third round - and deservedly so...

Goal: Everton 2-0 Doncaster

It looks like Sean Dyche is about to earn his first win of the season.

An excellent goal from Iliman Ndiaye doubles Everton's lead at Goodison Park - and showed fans just what the Toffees have been missing in attacking areas.

Meanwhile, Walsall are now AHEAD against Huddersfield, going 3-2 in front after Michal Helik's unfortunate own goal.

Goal: Leicester 3-0 Tranmere

That should be that at the King Power! Wilfred Ndidi charges into the box slot home and fire the Foxes 3-0 up against Tranmere, all but booking their place in the Carabao Cup third round.

Elsewhere, Walsall have completed a sensational comeback against Huddersfield, capitalising against 10 men to make it 2-2 thanks to a brace from Nathan Lowe. All to play for!

FT: Middlesbrough 0-5 Stoke

Stoke become the first team through to the Carabao Cup third round after a second-half capitulation from Middlesbrough, who will be bitterly disappointed with the manner of their exit tonight.

The Potters went into the break 1-0 ahead through Emre Tezgel, before Ryan Mmaee, Lewis Koumas and Million Manhoef ran riot at the Riverside in the second half, earning their side a superb 5-0 win.

Plenty for Michael Carrick to ponder...

Stephy Mavididi doubles the Foxes' lead in the 51st minute from the penalty spot, giving Tranmere a mountain to climb to turn around the tie at the King Power.

Meanwhile, Max Watters has put Barnsley 1-0 in front against Sheffield United and Bolton are ahead against Shrewsbury thanks to Jordi Osei-Tutu.

Goal: FINALLY a goal for Everton

Two summer signings link up for Everton shortly after half time to hand the Toffees a much-needed 1-0 lead to calm the frustrated Goodison crowd.

Jesper Lindstrom cuts inside before passing to Tim Iroegbunam on the edge of the area, and the former Aston Villa man fires into the net to put Everton ahead.

A great goal from the midfielder.

Goal: Brighton 2-0 Crawley

During half-time at the Amex, Brighton's new summer signing Ferdi Kadioglu has come out to meet the fans.

And it seems his introduction has given the Seagulls a boost after the break, as Jeremy Sarmiento dribbles into the box superbly and fires the ball into the roof of the net to hand Fabian Hurzeler's side a 2-0 lead.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday have levelled terms at Grimsby - it's 1-1 there.

Goal: That's FIVE for Stoke!

This has been a disaster for Michael Carrick's side.. Million Manhoef bags his second and Stoke's FIFTH of the game at the Riverside.

Get this... there's still 20 minutes to go!

Still no breakthrough at Goodison

Not the first half Sean Dyche was looking for... Everton head into half time level with Doncaster after a frustrating 45 minutes at Goodison.

They're the only Premier League side not to be winning at the break... do we have an upset on our hands?

Goal: Middlesbrough 0-4 Stoke

That should be that! Million Manhoef and Lewis Koumas put Stoke 4-0 ahead to surely put the tie beyond Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, it's four for Preston at Harrogate, who haven't even got to half time yet.

Red card at Walsall

Walsall may be 1-0 down but they've been handed a huge chance against Huddersfield here...

The visitors are now down to 10 men as Matty Pearson is given his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Still 1-0 to Huddersfield, but can they hold on?

Goal: Leicester 1-0 Tranmere

Wonder goal from Jordan Ayew! What a strike on his debut!

The former Crystal Palace man picks up the ball on the edge of the area and chops inside before thundering an effort past Tranmere's 43-year-old goalkeeper Murphy.

Meanwhile, Preston are making light work of tonight's clash with Harrogate, now leading 3-0 thanks to goals from Sam Greenwood and Milutin Osmajic.

Eze's superb goal disallowed

Palace nearly go two up in superb fashion as Eze strokes home a stunning lob over the goalkeeper at Selhurst Park.

But the England international's wonder goal is disallowed for offside, first flagged by the linesman before being confirmed by VAR.

Unlucky for Eze... but Norwich are just about still in this. Still 1-0.

Goal: Brighton 1-0 Crawley

Simon Adingra puts Brighton ahead against Crawley, who had controlled large parts of the game prior to the winger's strike.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood are back ahead against Rotherham thanks to Ryan Graydon's 29th minute goal, leading 2-1.

Elsewhere, Grimsby are 1-0 ahead against Sheffield Wednesday thanks to Cameron McJannett - and Josh Koroma has given Huddersfield the lead against League Two outfit Walsall.

Will there be a major upset?

Goal: Middlesbrough 0-1 Stoke

Stoke take the lead at the Riverside!

Lewis Koumas finds space on the right flank and cuts a simple ball towards Emre Tezgel at the back post - and the winger slots home to fire the visitors ahead.

A well-worked goal but one Middlesbrough will be bitterly disappointed with.

Dyche goes full strength

Take one look at the Everton team sheet and it's clear Sean Dyche is not taking any chances... Seamus Coleman captains a side glittering with international players from Jordan Pickford to Vitalii Mykolenko.

Doncaster will not be deterred by the strong XI however, especially given the Toffees' recent form.

Jesper Lindstrom, who joined from Napoli on loan this summer, will certainly be one to watch at Goodison this evening. Let's see if he can find Everton their first win of the season.

Joachim Andersen makes second Fulham debut

Joachim Andersen sealed his return to Craven Cottage with a £30million move from Crystal Palace, surprising many fans after appearing settled and in good form at Selhurst Park.

But the Dane has opted for a new chapter with Fulham, where he spent 2020-21 season on loan, and starts for Marco Silva at St Andrew's tonight.

He joins fellow summer signing Sander Berge in the starting XI and fellow Fulham returnee Ryan Sessegnon.

Kick off: Middlesbrough 0-0 Stoke

We're underway in the 7.15pm kick-off...

You're not going to believe this...

Leicester and Tranmere face off tonight in a repeat of the 2000 Football League Cup final, which the Foxes won 2-1 at Wembley.

Tranmere goalkeeper Joe Murphy stood between the sticks that day before going on to enjoy a storied career with the likes of West Brom, Sunderland and Coventry.

Where is he today? Starting in goal for Tranmere!

24 years on, Murphy is still going strong as a player coach for Tranmere, having returned to his boyhood club in 2020.

Let's hope it's a special day for the 43-year-old. Some achievement!

Guehi starts for Palace

Crystal Palace get underway against Norwich in just under an hour, and there's one name on the team sheet that will please Eagles fans.

Marc Guehi, who is strongly linked with a move to Newcastle ahead of this week's deadline, will captain Palace at Selhurst Park tonight, with Eberechi Eze and Dean Henderson also involved in a strong XI.

But will the England international still be at the club in a week? Only time will tell...

Brighton team news: Debut for O'Riley

Fabian Hurzeler rings the changes ahead of tonight's clash at the Amex with Adam Webster captaining the side as the likes of Tariq Lamptey, Bart Verbruggen and Simon Adingra come in.

Notably, it's a debut for new Seagulls signing Matt O'Riley, who joined in a £25m move from Celtic this week.

A huge day for Everton

Everton's Premier League campaign has started with nightmare 3-0 and 4-0 defeats against Brighton and Tottenham, leading to a small minority of fans abusing the Toffees players on their train home from London last weekend.

This evening's Carabao Cup clash against Doncaster will be as much about getting the fans back onside as it will progressing to the third round.

Sean Dyche called on his players to prove fans wrong with a rallying cry on Monday. Read Mail Sport's full story below.

Volavola finally signs 1-year contract with Leicester Tigers

latest travel news leicester

Former Fiji Water Flying Fijians flyhalf Ben Volavola has finally signed a 1-year contract with Leicester Tigers for the 2024/2025 Gallagher Premiership.

The 33-year-old brings significant experience to the club and will no doubt add depth to the side’s backline, especially in the flyhalf’s position.

Volavola says he has been waiting for the right opportunity and after speaking to Leicester’s coach Michael Cheika, he jumped on the chance to join the club.

He says he is excited to see what he and the team can do this season.

He adds he is honoured and excited to join the club, and the talented players that the club has.

Volavola has accumulated over 200 professional rugby appearances including 38 Test caps for Fiji which also included two Rugby World Cups.

Before joining Leicester, Volavola spent the last seven seasons playing in France and his tenure in the Top 14 and Pro D2 saw him feature for clubs such as Racing 92, Perpignan and most recently Agen.

Leicester Tigers Head Coach Michael Cheika says they are very pleased to be able to add a player of Volavola’s experience and quality to the squad.

He says Volavola’s knowledge of northern-hemisphere rugby from his time in France is a plus, and his experience at the international level is invaluable.

Cheika adds he knows Volavola is a man of good character and will add value to their environment.

Leicester secured a safe passage through to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a dominant 4-0 victory over Tranmere at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester made eight changes from their defeat to Fulham at the weekend and took a while to get in their stride but it was Jordan Ayew - on his first start - that gave the Foxes a narrow half-time advantage.

An imperious-looking Leicester pulled no punches in the second period and their Premier League quality showed as Stephy Mavididi made it two from the penalty spot before Wilfred Ndidi and Harry Winks each struck to hand Steve Cooper his first competitive win in charge.

A minute's applause rang round the ground ahead of kick-off to pay tribute to former Foxes boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who died on Monday.

A low key and rather disjointed start to the contest welcomed a sparsely-populated King Power Stadium, but the hosts soon started to gain control against their opposition, who were still unbeaten in the fourth tier, led by Nigel Adkins.

Player-coach Joe Murphy, 43, lined up between the sticks for the visitors and was tested for the first time after 20 minutes when he dived across to meet Ayew's darting effort from distance.

A neat exchange between former Spurs pair Winks and Oliver Skipp sent Ndidi through on goal but he dragged his effort wide across the face of goal.

League Two Tranmere held their own for the first half-hour but their top-flight opponents were starting to show their quality as the half wore on - this time Skipp raced clear but Murphy was called upon for a second time to keep it goalless.

Tranmere's resistance broke in the 38th minute with thanks to a piece of brilliance from Ayew, who shifted the ball onto his right from outside the box again and cracked it past Murphy - despite getting his hands to the effort.

Harry Winks celebrates after netting Leicester City's fourth goal versus Tranmere.

Leicester had the opportunity to double their advantage in the 51st minute after Ricardo Pereira was brought down by Connor Jennings in the area and Mavididi struck the ball low and hard into the bottom-left corner to double their lead.

The home side were out of sight with 20 minutes to play as Winks' pass was flicked by Ayew into the path of Ndidi, who finished from close range.

Leicester showed no signs of letting up and were on the prowl for more as - from a corner - Winks picked up the ball on the edge of the box and bulleted home to cap off a supreme evening.

Fulham 2-1 Leicester: Highlights, man of the match, stats as Emile Smith Rowe off the mark

Hailing from Hale End: Smith Rowe, Iwobi fire Fulham to win over Leicester

Two former Arsenal products did the damage as Fulham saw off the threat of Leicester City to record a 2-1 win in Saturday's Premier League clash at Craven Cottage.

Both bidding to earn their first top-flight of the season at the second attempt, the first half was a reflection of the two sides' yearning for three points, with end-to-end action in the West London rain.

Marco Silva 's side bossed the ball and were deservedly ahead through perhaps the most popular scorer possible in Emile Smith Rowe , but they failed to capitalise on their continued supremacy, as Tottenham Hotspur did at the King Power on Monday.

Deja vu struck in a good way for Leicester, who drew themselves level just before the break thanks to Wout Faes 's header, which was initially ruled out for an offside offence before the VAR room sided with the visitors.

A determined Rodrigo Muniz led the Fulham charge in the second as the Cottagers desperately sought a response, but even the hosts' main man was extremely profligate, Alex Iwobi was not, prodding the hosts back ahead with 20 minutes to go.

The Nigeria international's slick finish would prove to be the telling moment in the English capital, as Fulham were rewarded for their overall dominance to leave Leicester still searching for their first win of the new campaign.

FULHAM VS. LEICESTER HIGHLIGHTS

Emile Smith Rowe celebrates scoring for Fulham on August 24, 2024

A goal likely celebrated as loud in North London as it was at Craven Cottage, Fulham's record signing Smith Rowe marks his home debut for the Cottagers with the opening goal after a frenetic start.

The ever-dangerous Adama Traore sprints inside and sprays a crisp pass out to Smith Rowe on the left, and the ex-Arsenal man shrugs off a desperate James Justin before picking out the far side of the net with panache.

Wout Faes goal vs. Fulham (38th min, Fulham 1-1 Leicester)

Despite Fulham's relative dominance, Leicester still posed a threat in the first half, and an unlikely source brings the Foxes back on level terms seven minutes before the break.

Facundo Buonanotte 's corner is floated into the danger area, and nobody in a white shirt is picking up Faes, who nods a header into the bottom corner. The Belgian's goal was initially ruled out for Jamie Vardy interfering with Bernd Leno from an offside position, but a VAR review saw the visitors awarded their equaliser.

Alex Iwobi goal vs. Leicester (70th min, Fulham 2-1 Leicester)

Fulham's second-half pressure finally pays off, and it is a wonderful passing move out from the back from the Cottagers, as Antonee Robinson releases Iwobi with a first-time pass, and the ex-Arsenal man dashes into the box before firing in underneath the arm of Mads Hermansen .

MAN OF THE MATCH - ANDREAS PEREIRA

Fulham's Andreas Pereira pictured on August 24, 2024

Even though Smith Rowe and Iwobi's names were up in lights, Andreas Pereira was the driving force at the heart of the Fulham midfield all afternoon and did not deserve to end the game without a single goal involvement.

The erstwhile Manchester United man fashioned a massive seven chances on the afternoon, as well as having two shots and completing four successful long balls from four attempts in a masterful engine room display.

A second consecutive showdown against newly-promoted opposition is on Fulham's agenda for matchday three, as the Cottagers travel to Ipswich Town for a Saturday 3pm kickoff.

At the same time, Leicester will welcome Champions League-bound Aston Villa to the King Power Stadium, determined to make it third time lucky in 2024-25.

Arne Slot Extends Perfect Liverpool Start, Chelsea Hit Wolves For Six

Arne slot extended his perfect start as liverpool manager with a 2-0 win against brentford on his anfield debut.

latest travel news leicester

Arne Slot extended his perfect start as Liverpool manager with a 2-0 win against Brentford on his Anfield debut, while Noni Madueke hit a hat-trick and then apologised for a social media slur as Chelsea crushed Wolves 6-2 on Sunday. Slot was serenaded by Liverpool fans before kick-off and goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah ensured the mood remained upbeat as Liverpool made it two successive victories under their new boss. The 45-year-old was taking charge of his first Premier League home game after opening his reign with a 2-0 win at Ipswich last weekend.

Slot was hired from Feyenoord to replace Jurgen Klopp after the German stepped down at the end of last term following nine successful years at Anfield.

The early signs are promising for Slot as he looks to build on the foundations laid by Klopp, who bowed out with a third-placed finish in the Premier League and a League Cup final victory last season.

In front of an Anfield league record crowd of 60,107, Liverpool took the lead in the 13th minute with a blistering break that climaxed with Diaz taking Diogo Jota 's pass and firing high into the net.

Salah put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute, cleverly adjusting his body position to dink his shot into the far corner from 12 yards after Dominik Szoboszlai tenaciously won possession in midfield.

"I think Liverpool fans saw these performances under Jurgen Klopp many times. I want to see everybody sprinting back and doing everything they can to avoid conceding a goal and that's what we did very well today," Slot said.

"If you keep on insisting in what you do, the execution becomes better. Brentford didn't have the legs anymore to defend us."

Slot will get his first taste of a Liverpool grudge match next weekend when his team travel to bitter rivals Manchester United.

"Brentford made it very tough for us today but I am not expecting them in the top six this season so we have to improve to make sure we can do it against teams that can end up in the top six," he said.

At Molineux, Chelsea made the perfect start after just 98 seconds when Matheus Cunha could only flick his attempted clearance from a corner towards Nicolas Jackson, who was left unmarked to head in from six yards.

Jackson's goal infuriated Wolves fans already angry with Chelsea after Madueke posted and then deleted a critical review of Wolverhampton just hours before kick-off.

Madueke shared his location, which was Wolverhampton, in the post, which read "this place is s**t".

He was more diplomatic after the match, saying: "I just want to apologise to everyone that I might have offended. It is just a human mistake, an accident.

"It wasn't meant to be out on my socials like that. I'm sure Wolverhampton is a nice town and I'm sorry."

Chelsea run riot

Cunha equalised in the 27th minute and after Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's advantage in the 45th minute, Jorgen Strand Larsen dragged Wolves level again.

But Palmer found Madueke in the 49th minute and his shot deflected past Wolves keeper Jose Sa.

Madueke struck again nine minutes later, slotting a composed finish through Sa's legs.

The 22-year-old completed his treble with a carbon copy of his two previous goals, once again finishing off another Palmer assist to silence the Wolves boo-boys.

Joao Felix came off the bench to cap the rout in the 80th minute following his permanent move from Atletico Madrid earlier in the week.

After a 2-0 loss against Manchester City last weekend in his first game since arriving from Leicester, this was Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca 's first Premier League win with the Blues.

At the Vitality Stadium, Newcastle rescued a controversial 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

Newcastle trailed when Joelinton carelessly lost possession and Antoine Semenyo's low cross was touched in by Marcus Tavernier in the 37th minute.

Eddie Howe's team equalised in the 76th minute as Harvey Barnes floated in a cross that Anthony Gordon slotted home from close range.

Bournemouth were furious to be denied a stoppage-time winner when VAR ruled Dango Ouattara had handled before heading in.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said: "It's very difficult to digest. It's obvious what happened. We should have won the game.

"The ball touched his shoulder. The referee could not do anything else, someone call him and said he have to disallow it. No-one will remember this in two weeks. I'm very frustrated."
