Elland Road Stadium Tour – Leeds United

Elland Road is the 20th largest stadium in the UK and home to Leeds United.  Reasons to take a stadium tour of Elland Road;

  • You’re a Leeds United fan
  • Top Yorkshire football team
  • 20th largest stadium in UK
  • Historic Euro 96 stadium
  • You’ve seen the stadium in the movies

I was staying at a hotel in Leeds city center and walked to Elland Road.  As a matter of fact, I stayed in the DoubleTree by Hilton which is where the Leeds United players stay before matchday.

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Location

Elland Road stadium is in the Holbeck district of Leeds around 2 miles from the city center.  The M621 motorway runs adjacent to the stadium.

How to get from Leeds Train Station to Elland Road

Firstly, you can walk on a mostly pedestrianised path to the stadium which takes around 40 minutes.  Alternatively, you can take bus 51 or 52 from the city center.  Buses leave from Vicar Lane which is a 7 minute walk from the train station.  They conveniently stop right outside the Billy Bremner bar from where you can also return to the city center.

Billy Bremner Statue

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Billy Bremner Statue

Billy Bremner is a Leeds United legend.  Originally from Scotland, he moved to Leeds in 1960 and became the Leeds United captain.  An interesting fact is that his father encouraged him to move to England to avoid the religious rivalry between Celtic and Rangers .  With Billy Bremner as captain Leeds won the League twice as well as the, FA Cup, League Cup and Fairs Cup (Europa League).  To this day, this is the most successful period in Leeds United history.  Lastly, if you visit the Scottish Football Museum in Hampden Park you’ll see his name in the Hall of Fame.

Don Revie Statue

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Don Revie Statue

Billy Bremner Bar – Stadium Tour Meeting Point

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Billy Bremner Bar

The stadium tour kicks off from the Billy Bremner bar.  If you arrive a little early you can buy yourself a drink and admire the memorabilia on display.  Take note of the Billy Bremner mural where he’s sat on a wall beside the dugout.  This wall still exists and you can recreate this iconic moment yourself during the tour.  Finally, I recommend you use the bathroom here before the tour starts!

Elland Road Leeds

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United

The Elland Road capacity is 37,890, as a result it’s the 20th largest stadium in the UK.  It’s made up of the Don Revie, John Charles as well as the East and South stands.  Elland Road famously hosted 3 Group B games in Euro 96.  Did you know Elland Road used to be a rugby stadium?  As a matter of fact, there’s a valuable painting hanging in the President’s Suite at Twickenham which features Elland Road.

Elland Road in the Movies

Elland Road has featured in 2 popular movies.  Firstly, The Damned United which is about Brian Clough’s infamous spell at Leeds United.  Secondly, Elland Road featured in the Oscar winning movie, The King’s Speech .  Although the real speech took place at Ibrox in Glasgow the speech in the movie was filmed at Elland Road.

Director’s Box

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Director's Box

The comfiest seats with arguably the best views of the pitch are in the Director’s box.  You’re welcome to sit and pose for pictures here.  Imagine sitting here when Leeds United won the league.  Another interesting moment in Elland Road history is when the Queen visited in 1977 as part of her jubilee celebrations.  Additionally, the rock band, Queen have also performed at Elland Road.

Media Section

Above the Director’s Box and much of the John Charles stand is the Elland Road media section.   An interesting fact is that this is the biggest media section in British football.  Why do Leeds United have such a large media section?  When the stadium was inspected for the Euro 96 competition, the media section was not large enough.  Leeds did not want to miss out on being a host city therefore built a huge section for the world media to cover Euro 96.  This extended media section remains today.

Champions League Staircase

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Champions League Staircase

The biggest success Leeds United had in Europe was in 1968 when they won the Europa League.  However it’s the run to the Champions League semi finals which they are most remembered for.  As part of the tour you’ll walk a staircase full of memorabilia from this famous cup run.

Leeds United Museum

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United Museum

At the bottom of the Champions League staircase is the Leeds United museum.  Here, you’ll find the hall of fame as well as famous players shirts.  There’s even a Billy Bremner Scotland shirt as well as a Jackie Charlton England shirt.  Additionally, there are gifts from other teams which have visited Elland Road.  I’ve visited Partizan Belgrade so I was drawn to a gift on display from this club.

Away Team Dressing Room

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Away Team Dressing Room

The away team dressing room is dull and uninspiring.  However, I must say, it’s not bad!  The worst away team dressing room I’ve seen is at Newcastle United stadium .

Home Team Dressing Room

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Home Team Dressing Room

The Leeds United dressing room is narrow and compact.  Moreover, it’s homely with the Leeds United banners.  Due to its compact design, there’s a true feeling of team spirit.  As well as a compact team dressing room, Leeds United also have access to excellent bathroom, warm up and physio facilities.

Players Tunnel

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Players Tunnel

Leeds United intimidate their opponents in the players tunnel with huge images of their current squad.  Opposite the image is the Leeds United honors list.  This is a list of all the trophies they have won.  For me, it was especially interesting to see the successes of Leeds United.  Not just the 3 famous league wins but also the occasions when they have won the lower leagues.

Flash Interview Room

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Flash Interview Rooms

Adjacent to the players tunnel are the flash interview rooms.  They are here so the media can grab the players and give them a quick interview.  The interview must happen in front of the boards for sponsorship reasons.  Due to the fact you always see these on TV, these are an incredibly popular photo spot.

Pitchside and Dugout

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Pitchside and Dugout

When the East Stand was completed in 1992 it was the biggest Cantilever stand in the world.  This stand alone had a capacity of 17,000 spectators.  The capacity has since been reduced but it’s still one of the largest stands in English football nonetheless.

Leeds United Legends Club

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - Legends Club

The last stop on the Leeds United stadium tour is the Legends Club.  Not only does this give a wonderful stadium view but you also learn about the Legend’s Club facilities.  If you buy Legend’s Club tickets for a match you’ll receive a true VIP experience.  All food and drink is included with the ticket.  In addition, Leeds United legends such as Danny Mills, Ian Harte, Gary Kelly and Lee Bowyer regularly frequent the club.  As a result, you can watch the match, enjoy the food as well as meet and greet Leeds legends.  Of course, the legends are also happy to take selfies with you.  As part of the stadium tour, you see the facilities but unfortunately no legends are there.

Enjoy the Elland Road Stadium Tour

Elland Road Stadium Tour - Leeds United - History

The Elland Road stadium tour is an excellent experience.  Unfortunately, tours are not so frequent therefore you can’t just turn up and take one.  But they’re most likely to be scheduled on match days.  Check the schedule and book your stadium tour online.  Alternatively, why not watch a Leeds United football match?

Other famous stadiums in the north of England include, Hillsborough , Anfield , Etihad and St James’ Park .

Elland Road is a 1897 built football stadium located in the West Yorkshire city of Leeds.

Home to Leeds United A.F.C since the club’s formation in 1919, the ground has a capacity of 37,890 which makes it the 13th largest in England and second largest outside of the Premier League division.

Leeds United Stadium Guide

Elland road history.

Elland Road has been home to Leeds United since the club’s formation back in 1919.

Previously used to host the fixtures of both Leeds City and Holbeck Rugby Club, the stadium was originally called the Old Peacock Ground after the pub opposite the pitch, however it shortly became known as Elland Road after the first stand was erected at the start of the 1898-1899 season.

Before Leeds United moved into the ground, the ground was developed by resident team Leeds City who constructed three covered stands.

The club attracted decent sized crowds in their first season in the league with an estimated 22,500 fans watching the local derby against Bradford City on 30th December 1904.

The club’s success was not to last however as they were expelled from the football league in 1919 after a scandal emerged involving illegal payments to footballers during the war.

Leeds United purchase the ground for a bargain £250, and slowly began to ascend up the structure of the football league. Elland Road remained largely unchanged in the period immediately after and before the war, only really developing when iconic manager Don Revie took over in the 1960s.

The record attendance of this era was set on 15th March 1967 when 57,892 fans watched an FA Cup match against Sunderland when the club were in the First Division.

Like the majority of British clubs, the tragic events of Hillsborough and subsequent publication of the Taylor Report in 1990 was set to have a profound impact on modern day football.

The club undertook its largest renovation project in 1992 when the Lowfields was replaced by two-tiered 17,000 capacity stand. By 1994 the ground was an all-seater after the famous Kop terrace was converted.

Since the turn of the millennium different chairman have proposed relocation to new stadiums, however nothing has materialised so far.

Peter Risdale’s plans in 2001 were scuppered by financial turmoil, and recently emerged plans to remodel the ground for the 2018 world cup have all but failed as they were contingent on England being awarded the right to host the tournament.

Stand Photos

Leeds’s ground is comprised of the following four sections: The Revie Stand (North), The Hesco Stand (East), The Elland Road Stand (South), and The John Charles Stand (West).

Matchday Experience

Elland road away end.

Traveling football fans who make the journey to Leeds United’s stadium to see their team in action are housed within the John Charles Stand which runs for the length of the pitch on the western side.

Essentially consisting of a two-tier arrangement, the 3,000 or so allocation of tickets are usually for the top-tier with other sections of the stand reserved for home supporters.

The stand is slowly beginning to show its age with the away section’s seats apparently still to this day a combination of both wood and plastic materials.

Although some parts of the John Charles Stand have unrestricted views, a good number of the spaces in the second tier have partially obscured views from the pillars which support the roof.

Inside the concourse itself and outside the ground you’d have to be particularly ungenerous to pick faults with the matchday arrangements, with the turnstiles, concourse, and kiosks operating in an unexpectedly efficient manner.

The Stewards are however slightly more contentious with some fans suggesting that swearing is banned. F…

Best Pubs near ground

Between the east and south stands there is a club-run bar for away supporters known as Howards. It opens a few hours before kick-off and requires you to produce your ticket upon entry which ensures no home fans enter.

Although it may seem a bit extreme, it does help create a lively atmosphere on matchdays!

As for outside the ground, behind the south stand is The Old Peacock on Elland Road which as the name implies, is reserved for home supporters only.

The only “proper” pub within the immediate vicinity of the stadium, the next closest is Drysalters which is located 10-15 minutes further along Elland Road.

To reach it, turn right (with your back to the south stand) and proceed along past the Police HQ and under the railway Bridge until you see it on your left hand side.

Food - Places to eat

There’s a McDonalds located on the corner where Lowfields Road and Elland Road meet which is always popular on matchdays, with a Burger King at the other end of the famous road next to B&Q and the second M521 exit.

There is also a Subway franchise located behind the south stand.

Leeds United Club Shop

Exterior of Leeds United Club Shop

Leeds United’s club store at Elland Road stocks a wide range of football merchandise and  has the following opening times:

  • Monday to Saturday: 9.00 am – 5.30 pm
  • Sundays and Bank Holidays: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
  • Matchdays: Times vary but always open for a few hours before kick-off.

You can also purchase Peacock products online from: https://www.lufc.talent-sport.co.uk/

Can you take a stadium Tour?

Leeds United offer fans the chance to go behind the scenes at Elland Road with a fully guided tour of the clubs usually off-limits facilities such as the players dressing room, tunnel and the manager’s dugout.

Running on Saturdays at 11.00 am and Sunday at 2.00 pm throughout the season and departing from Billy’s Bar in the south stand, tickets cost £15.00 for adults and £10.00 for Seniors and Children making it a reasonable priced day out for the family.

To see the latest tour times, find out more information and to book your place, please visit this stadium tour page on the club’s official ticket sellers website.

How to buy Leeds United Tickets

Elland Road

Elland Road

Club: Leeds United FC | Opening: 1897 | Capacity: 39,460 seats

History and description

Elland Road opened in 1897, however in the first years of its existence it was only used for rugby matches. In 1904 newly formed football club Leeds City moved into the ground, and in the following years the stadium got gradually expanded.

After in 1919 Leeds City got expelled from the Football League, the stadium was sold for a sum of £250 to newly formed Leeds United. Further renovations were made shortly after, but few changes were made in the decades following.

In 1956, a fire burned down the West Stand, and a new stand had to be built. With the successes of Leeds United in the 1960s and early 70s further renovations were made.

Elland Road achieved its record attendance in 1967 during an FA Cup match with Sunderland. A total of 57,892 supporters watched the game from the stands.

In the early 1990s, the club started a redevelopment program for the ground, which most notably included the rebuilding of the East Stand in 1993. At completion, the stand counted as the biggest cantilever stand in the world.

Elland Road was one of the playing venues of the Euro 1996 Championships, during which it hosted three group matches.

In the early 2000s, Leeds investigated a move to a brand new 55,000-stadium, however these plans were shelved after the club’s finances severely deteriorated. Only smaller renovations have been made to the stadium since.

Elland Road can furthermore be reached with bus 51, 53, and 55. Line 51 has the most frequent service. Either catch the bus in front of Kirkgate Market in the city centre, or on Meadow Lane just south-east of the train station. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

History of the Stadium :

Leeds United’s stadium, Elland Road, has a long and storied club history that has seen it grow and evolve into one of the most iconic grounds in England.

Elland Road dates back to 1897 when Leeds City Council purchased the land on which the stadium now stands. The site was initially used as a municipal rubbish tip. But in 1904, the council agreed to lease the land to Leeds Rugby League Club, who needed a new ground to play their matches.

The rugby club made a number of improvements to the site, including the construction of a stand and dressing rooms. The first rugby match was played at Elland Road on 3 September 1898. However, the rugby club ran into financial difficulties and thus were forced to sell the ground to the newly-formed Leeds United Football Club in 1919… for a measly £250!

Under the ownership of United, Elland Road was transformed into a football stadium. The first major development came in 1920 when the South Stand was built. Further redevelopment of the West Stand in 1957 and the East Stand in 1963 followed.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Elland Road was the site of some of the most memorable matches in English football history. United won their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 1968, and reached the European Cup final in 1975, where they were defeated by Bayern Munich.

Safety regulations forced Leeds to renovate Elland Road

The 1980s saw Elland Road fall into disrepair. Tragedies including the Bradford City Stadium fire in 1985 and the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 led to increased safety regulations. As a result, Elland Road underwent a major renovation in the early 1990s, which saw the construction of a new West Stand and its conversion into an all-seater stadium.

In 1992, Leeds United became one of the founding 20 members of the new Premier League , which was to replace the first division of the English Football League, and thus made Elland Road one of the most famous grounds in England. The 1990s and early 2000s saw the club achieve some of their greatest successes, including reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2001.

Financial mismanagement and a series of ownership changes led to Leeds falling on hard times, which meant that the club were subsequently relegated to the Championship in 2004. The stadium was once again renovated in the mid-2000s, with the construction of a new East Stand and the removal of the old Kop Stand.

Leeds brought Premier League football back to Elland Road

Leeds United then returned to the Premier League in 2020, back where they truly belonged, before enduring relegation in 2023. There are plans to further develop and modernise the ground in the coming years, including the construction of a new North Stand.

Elland Road is one of the finest stadiums in all of England. It has an electric atmosphere, packed with some of the most passionate fans in all of the land. Leeds should be proud to call it their home.

How to get to Elland Road :

Once you’re in Leeds, it’s extremely easy to get to Elland Road.

From The North: Follow the A58 or A61 into Leeds city centre, then follow signs for the M621. Join the M621 and after one and a half miles leave the motorway at the junction with the A643. Follow the A643 into Elland Road for the ground. Go down Elland Road past the ground on your right and the Old Peacock pub on your left, you will come to a couple of entrances to a couple of very large car parks which aren’t too expensive to park in for a match day.

From The South: Leave the M1 at Junction 43 and take the M621, towards Leeds City Centre. You will pass the ground on your left, you need to leave at the next Junction 1 and turn left onto the A6110 ring road. Take the next left onto Elland Road for the ground.

If you are taking public transport, the nearest train station is Leeds – which is approximately a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute taxi ride to the stadium.

There are also several bus routes that stop near the stadium, so you aren’t short of choice in regard to transport on matchday.
