The Best North American Destinations for a Bird-watching Trip — and Our Tips for Having the Best Time in Each

These crowd-pleasing North American destinations are as perfect for bird-watching as they are for a good old-fashioned vacation.

COURTESY OF THE ATCHAFALAYA NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA

Perhaps you’ve heard about the bird-watching boom? Newcomers are flocking to the hobby, which studies have shown has the power to boost happiness. Another upside: unlike many outdoorsy pursuits, this one requires little in the way of specialized equipment or physical fitness.

Serious aficionados often plan their vacations around migrations, visiting spring hot spots such as Nebraska’s Platte River Valley or the shores of Utah’s Great Salt Lake. But if you’re still easing into the hobby — or traveling with friends or relatives who don’t know a warbler from a woodpecker — these five alternatives have plenty to offer in addition to bird-watching bliss.

STUART THURLKILL/COURTESY OF THE GREEN O

Greenough, Montana

Bird-watchers appreciate western Montana’s avian biodiversity; it’s particularly known for its populations of greater sage grouse, golden eagles, and Bohemian waxwings. The family-friendly Resort at Paws Up and its luxe, adults-only sibling property the Green O grant guests access to trails through 37,000 acres of wilderness. About 30 minutes away in Missoula, the 42-acre Greenough Park is another destination for bird spotters, with robust signage detailing local species.

Bragging Rights

The northern pygmy-owl is an adorable but ruthless carnivore that snacks on songbirds.

Besides the Birds

Both Paws Up and Green O offer a huge array of other outdoor activities, including horseback riding, rappelling, and guided fly-fishing for experienced anglers as well as those just learning to cast.

Little St. Simons Island, Georgia

Accessible only by boat, this privately owned island is home to the Lodge on Little St. Simons Island . It is also part of the Golden Isles, one of the most important coastal conservation areas on the Eastern Seaboard. With rookeries of boisterous wading birds and a beach full of plovers, it’s perfect for “hard-core birders,” says Little St. Simons naturalist manager Nate Ramey. “But others can relax on our seven miles of beaches — which you only have to share with twenty or thirty other people,” because they’re open only to guests.

Rainbow-colored painted buntings are big on the island, as are wood storks. “They were a protected species, but now they’ve bounced back dramatically,” Ramey says of the long-legged wader. “It’s a testament to conservation.”

In addition to the beaches, the island has a network of hiking trails, while overnight guests can borrow bikes and fishing gear. In July, the island-wide bloom of hibiscus grandiflorus draws gardening geeks from around the U.S.

Bristol, Rhode Island

This scenic bayside village between Newport and Providence is home to intriguing species such as the wading willet and the iridescent purple martin, depending on the season. Spotting them is made easier by the boardwalks at the Audubon Nature Center & Aquarium and the hiking route at the Osamequin Nature Trails & Bird Sanctuary.

The saltmarsh sparrow may look like an everyday songbird, but this species, which nests at Jacob’s Point Preserve, is at risk of habitat loss as sea levels rise.

Bristol’s waterfront Blithewold estate has 33 acres of manicured gardens surrounding a historic mansion. In nearby Newport, the famed Cliff Walk gives a glimpse of the Gilded Age; spend the night at The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection , where the 33 stylish rooms and suites are fresh off a two-year renovation.

Vancouver Island, BC

Summer is the best time to visit this densely forested destination, where the “fall” migration season starts as early as July for some species. Along the island’s serene eastern coast, check out the BC Bird Trail between Parksville and Qualicum Beach, where black oystercatchers, tufted puffins, and bald eagles are commonly seen. On the wild western coast, between Tofino and Ucluelet, visitors can spot soaring albatross while scouting for humpback whales, orcas, and other marine life. “May and September are also prime time for migrating seabirds,” says Mark Maftei, executive director of the Raincoast Education Society. “The nearshore and offshore waters host hundreds of thousands of waterfowl and seabirds that are moving up or down the coast in those months,” he adds.

Despite only weighing the equivalent of four nickels, the plucky western sandpiper migrates thousands of miles between Alaska and South America.

Outdoor adventures of all sorts can be had on the island. Milner Gardens & Woodland , on the eastern coast near the BC Bird Trail, has a “hidden” teahouse and trails that thread through its 70 acres of gardens and forest. In Tofino, the oceanfront Wickaninnish Inn is a family-owned Relais & Châteaux property known for its fireplaces and the dramatic views from its picture windows.

ARTHUR MORRIS/GETTY IMAGES

Lafayette, Louisiana

About a two-hour drive west of New Orleans, this city is the gateway to Cypress Island Preserve and Rip Van Winkle Gardens, both prime springtime habitats for bitterns, rails, and grebes. The broader Atchafalaya National Heritage Area surrounding Lafayette is home to five-inch-tall prothonotary warblers, with their bright-yellow feathers, and the five-foot-tall whooping crane, one of the rarest birds in North America.

With pink plumage reminiscent of a 1980s bridesmaid’s dress, the roseate spoonbill is a wading bird with a large, ladle-shaped beak.

This is the land of crawfish and zydeco, where every meal is an occasion. Dive in at Spoonbill Watering Hole & Restaurant , a James Beard Award nominee inside a refurbished Conoco station in Lafayette, where the motto is “Tastes like good times.” Maison Madeleine is a characterful alternative to the chain hotels in the area.

A version of this story first appeared in the July 2023 issue of  Travel + Leisure  under the headline "Bring the Binoculars."

What Customer Say About Us

I want to express my amazement at the skills and knowledge of your guides… I cannot imagine how they become so proficient in the birds of several different countries!

AM, Uganda 2023

I really can’t think of a way this tour could have been improved. The itinerary was wonderful, the accommodations lovely, and the birds fantastic.

KB, Kenya & Tanzania 2023

This was my first international birding tour experience, and so while I have no basis for comparison, I was completely satisfied by this tour. The guides were excellent.

CC, Panama 2023

Another amazing trip with Rockjumper. The quality of not only the Rockjumper guides but the local guides as well was first class. Travelling with Rockjumper means you basically don’t have to worry about anything other than getting the birds in the binoculars, the guides take care of the rest which results in a really relaxing and enjoyable bird watching trip.

BW, Sri Lanka 2023

In the Rockjumper tradition, [our guide] went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure the serious birders in our group found our birds. This included several later night expeditions into the forest for owls and other nocturnal critters. [He] managed to handle everyone with great patience and skill.

RO, Ecuador 2023

This was my first Rockjumper trip. I definitely will be a repeat customer. The booking process was easy and painless. The transport and hotel logistics during the trip were flawless. [Our guides] worked diligently to make sure we saw as many birds as possible.

David’s tours are always informative and enjoyable! He is very personable and a wealth of knowledge. He is not just a birder, but a naturalist, as well. He easily adjusts his tours to the level of his clients. I highly recommend Indigo Birding Nature Tours.

Carolyn Smith

Facebook reviews.

I was fortunate to be able to participate in the Jan 2023 IndiGo Birding tour of Belize with David Rupp. It was an incredible once-in-a-lifetime trip and exceeded my already high expectations. Not only is David an excellent birder but he makes every effort for each participant to see the beautiful birds of Belize. I was able to see 195 species with 98 of them being life birds. There were so many gorgeous birds but the Lesson’s Motmot and Trogans were among my favorites.

Kathy Ruesink

David is excellent at helping us all become better birders. And he knows the good birding spots, time of day and best lighting.

Great day to spend with friends! We enjoyed clear blue skies, cold and crisp air and a great get away from the winter work days. David is so knowledgeable and shares his enthusiasm for nature.

Advait Marathe

I have had a great experience on all my trips. David knows all the areas and the birds very well. Highly recommended for birding in south-central Indiana.

Here at IndiGo Birding Nature Tours, we provide a diverse range of bird-centric excursions in Indiana, Chicago, and beyond, including international adventures in Belize with more destinations coming soon. Here we search for many birds of prey and other boreal specialties that make the quiet forest their winter home, like Great Grey Owl ,  Snowy Owl ,  Northern Hawk-Owl ,  Evening Grosbeak , and more. Just don’t forget your coat! From the snow of the north we make our way to South Texas in March to catch a great combination of resident specialties, early stages of migration, and wintering species like the endangered  Whooping Crane . April and May welcome a spectacular influx of migratory birds starting their journeys from the Neotropics to their northern breeding grounds. Florida is the first stop on their tiring expedition, and some species do not make it much further, like  Grey Kingbird  and  Black-whiskered Vireo . The pristine beaches, swamps, and marshes of the Everglades and a trip down the Florida Keys and to Dry Tortugas National Park provide an impressive array of seabirds, waders, and migrants. Of course, the colorful and bright wood warblers are unforgettable, so we head to the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. This birding excursion offers the amazing opportunity to score all 37 species of eastern warblers, such as  Blackburnian ,  Bay-breasted ,  Cerulean ,  Kirtland’s , and  Golden-winged Warblers . It is no wonder that the largest bird festival in the world is hosted here annually as migratory birds flood the Midwest in May.

The summer months focus on the northern US with species finally arriving at their breeding territories. The coasts and marshes of Maine feature some fantastic breeders like  Atlantic Puffin  and  Saltmarsh Sparrow . Some 4000+ miles from Maine bring us to the vast and beautiful expanses of the tundra in Alaska. The majestic beauty and peacefulness here are second to none and play host to many amazing breeding specialties as well as incredible mammals.  Bristle-thighed Curlew ,  Bluethroat ,  Emperor Goose , and  Grizzly Bear  are just a few of the amazing targets and highlights. Moving into late summer and early fall, Southeast Arizona begins its monsoon season, turning the once barren desert and scrubland landscape into a luscious green teeming with flowers. In the hummingbird capital of the US, with up to 15 species, the feeding stations and birding trails come to life with nesting activity.  Rivoli’s ,  Lucifer , and  Violet-crowned Hummingbird  are only a few of the long list of species on display in Arizona. Fall migration is now underway, and there is no better place than California. This massive state offers an incredible number of habitats with coastal marshes, redwood forests, expansive grasslands, mountains, and even an incredible display on pelagics. Catching resident specialties mixed in with western fall migrants makes for some truly epic bird watching.  Black-footed Albatross ,  White-headed Woodpecker ,  Mountain Bluebird , and  California Condor  are just a small taste of what this amazing state has on offer. The end of fall brings us back to winter, and we start the amazing journey across the United States all over again.

North America is one of the most scenically spectacular continents, and it is also teaming with wildlife in addition to birds: moose, elk, bears, mountain goats, and so much more. Join us in exploring this rich wilderness!

Testimonials from our usa birding tours.

Maine is beautiful, whether you’re on the shore or inland, and this tour showed us the best of both. Experiencing the variety of habitats with a knowledgeable guide and great companions was just what we needed after a year of not travelling. Jacob was a great leader for our group, making sure we saw the birds we wanted, but also on the look-out for mammals or letting us slow down to enjoy the wildflowers.

Jacob is an excellent birder and has great people skills. Both are needed in a good guide. He knew his stuff and put up with all the joking but was serious when it came to the birds. Would definitely tour with him again.

Every aspect of this tour was great. First of all, you must have cornered the market on great young tour guides, because Jacob was wonderful. Obviously an excellent birder, he was patient with us over 70 crowd members (we teased him about nobody over 70 ever again), enthusiastic and had a great sense of humor. He is very easy to be around, making all feel comfortable. Of course, the pelagic trip was, for us, the high point. We would suggest that you make the trip to Vinalhaven a regular part of the tour, and add Captain John Drury a must. He was a real character, and took special pains to make sure we saw all that we could see...even the Red-billed Tropicbird. And the trip up Mt. Washington was so very interesting, with all the vegetation changes as the altitude changed. AND we got the Bicknell's Thrush! Maine, from the mountains to the sparkling waters perfectly describes this tour, as it encompassed a wide variety of habitat and birds. Definitely a must if you want to see some hard-to-get species.

If you want to see great views of Chickens and Grouse at their leks, then this is the tour for you. Early mornings are no problem when you experience up-close views of these magnificent birds. Don't forget the other birds found in Colorado, this tour goes out of its way to find them all – and it doesn't disappoint.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Minnesota birding tour with Jacob Roalef of Birding Ecotours in January of 2022. The tour was very easy to book, and the ongoing communication with the corporate office and with our guide, Jacob was exceptional. I always got a prompt response to email questions, which was important and reassuring. Jacob was extremely knowledgeable of the local area and the various birding hotspots in order to give us the best opportunity of locating the various species we had all come to see. I would highly recommend this tour!

Jacob was patient, funny, talked to all the participants, and made sure all members got on the birds. Jacob gave me good looks at and information on two life birds, Glaucous and Iceland Gulls. He was also an excellent driver, especially on the last day when we drove from Grand Marais in a snowstorm.

A great overview of Minnesota winter birding. Although the list of potential birds is somewhat limited because of the weather, the quality of what we did see more than made up for lack of quantity. Eleven of the 44 birds I saw were lifers, including Great Grey Owl, Boreal Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak, Sharp-tailed Grouse and more. Most spectacular was I saw my first Bohemian Waxwing and then about 1,000 more as part of a massive flock, feeding on berries throughout the town of Grand Marais. We were able to experience that over two straight days.

I would highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in seeing the beautiful endemic birds of Hawaii before they are gone, and enjoying the natural beauty of the islands. Mandy Talpas, the local guide, did an excellent job sharing her vast knowledge of the endemic birds, their habitat, and the diseases that are threatening them. Jacob Roalef, who also shared his vast knowledge of the birds, and Mandy were very attentive to everyone’s needs, which included 8 participants with varying degrees of birding experience. The beauty of the islands and endemic birds, as well as the camaraderie of the participants and guides made this tour one of the best for me! The accommodations and foodwere great too!

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is interested in seeing Hawaii’s native birds on these beautiful islands. One of my favorites was the endangered Akiapolaau, referred to as Aki by our guides, which we saw in a restricted area by permit on the island of Hawaii. The Hawaiian name means “hammerhead,” because the Aki uses the shorter, lower half of it’s mandible to drill into tree trunks like a woodpecker for sap or insects, while the extended, curved upper half operates like a hook to extract the food. During our day spent exploring the restricted area for Hawaii’s endemic birds, three non-endemic (two males and one female) Kalij Pheasants walked across the path right in front of me. I also loved the fantastic coastal views where we observed Red-tailed, White-tailed, and Red-billed Tropicbirds, Red-Footed and Brown Boobies, and Great Frigatebirds, as well as spouting and breaching Humpback whales. I also enjoyed the opportunity to see Laysan Albatross nesting and walking around an upscale neighborhood, and Bristle-thighed Curlews perched in the cemetery from the golf course.

Our guides, Jacob and Mandy, were a great team! This was my second tour with Jacob and I was very impressed with his knowledge of the endemic birds of Hawaii. He is very personable and his birding skills are excellent. Mandy is also very personable and an excellent birder. She shared her extensive knowledge of Hawaii, the endemic birds, their habitat and the dangers they are facing.

The Southeast Arizona tour is in the perfect area to see the maximum number of species and rarities. This tour has the perfect guide, Jacob Roalef, who works diligently to make sure that each participant sees all the birds he finds. This tour has the perfect number of participants to have fun, share knowledge and get to know each other. I would highly recommend this tour! Jacob was an outstanding guide and I can’t say enough good things about him!. First, he knew the birds and could identify them by ear and sight. He made sure that each of us saw the bird(s) he had heard, seen or scoped. He also provided information about field marks, habitat, behavior and other interesting facts about the birds. Additionally, he knew a lot about the environment and gave us good context for the area that our tour covered. He was very diligent in finding the rarities, and then persistent until we saw them. Jacob also was very perceptive about each individual on the tour and gave equal attention to each of us based on our skill level in birding and our personal quirks. He is fun and funny, patient and well-organized and a safe and good driver. I innocently asked if there had ever been a flat tire on ones of his tours and that jinxed us because we indeed had one at 7,800 feet after a rain. Jacob was cool, calm and collected and what could have been a disaster ended with hilarity and a Band-tailed Pigeon. He facilitated and contributed to the camaraderie and banter that our group shared. I hope to go on another tour that Jacob guides.

Jacob really knows the habitats and has a lot of experience finding the sought-after birds. Combined with his excellent awareness and listening skills, and his ability to give good directions, with judicious use of laser pointer, his knowledge led to stellar looks at Florida’s birds. He made sure everyone got good looks.

About Us Birding Is The World Brazil Founders

The Mission

Birding Is The World is a new organization that explores the world of birding, with an emphasis on Brazil. Why are we interested in birds? Because they're amazing creatures and because it's important to save them for future generations. Why are we interested in Brazil? Because it's one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to over 1/3 of all bird species. These environments are in danger of non-existence. What can we do about this problem? There are lots of things that people can do but Birding Is The World believes that the best way to help is by getting out there and observing what’s happening with your own eyes so you have some idea of what needs more attention.

This philosophy leads us towards being a global conservation project with birding and local culture cultivation at its infrastructure.

Will bird flu be the next pandemic? Vaccines are prepped, just in case.

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. ‒ A quiet effort to prevent the next global pandemic began rolling off an assembly line this summer behind the gates of an office complex in suburban Raleigh.

In this sprawling factory, sheltered by thick pine groves, workers at CSL Seqirus are bottling millions of doses of a new vaccine targeting the H5N1 bird flu virus.

The virus, which first emerged in wild birds around 1997, has been spreading this year among dairy and poultry farms across the United States .

Thirteen farmworkers have been infected with the virus this year, some suffering eye redness, others a cough. No one became sick enough to require hospitalization, although, in other countries, about half of the people diagnosed with H5N1 over the years have died.

The virus is not being passed from person to person – and that is key to why public health officials aren't hitting the panic button. Because the risk to the general public remains low, the federal government doesn’t think it’s worth vaccinating anyone against H5N1 yet – even the farmworkers most at risk for getting sick from infected chickens or cows.

But behind the scenes, officials are getting ready at Seqirus' advanced facility in the biomanufacturing hub of Holly Springs.

Already, 4.8 million doses of a potential vaccine are sitting in an undisclosed Seqirus distribution center, ready for delivery if needed.

“An exercise like this gives our partners a chance to exercise that muscle, to make sure that the manufacturing’s there,” Dawn O’Connell, assistant secretary for preparedness and response for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, told USA TODAY during an exclusive tour of the vaccine factory in late July.

In past disease outbreaks, she said, getting enough vaccine made in time to stop individual infections and slow the spread of disease has been the government's "Achilles' heel."

Get the information you need to start your day smart. Sign up for USA TODAY's Daily Briefing newsletter.

So here, in the heart of North Carolina’s coveted Research Triangle, winding conveyor belts and hanging robotic arms are filling one thumb-sized glass vial at a time to avoid the next global pandemic.

True success would mean at some point the contents of those vials could essentially be flushed down the toilet – because bird flu no longer poses a theoretical threat to human health.

But at a time when the virus seems to be spreading to new farms every week, when America’s healthcare system and treatment of farmworkers means infections are likely going undetected and fall flu season is rapidly approaching, public health officials say there’s no such thing as being too careful.

“You want to prepare for the worst case,” said Dr. Raj Panjabi, who oversaw pandemic preparedness at the White House from 2021 to 2023 as a special assistant to President Joe Biden. “This gets the engine moving.”

On the production line

Through several security doors at the Seqirus facility, scores of workers in white zip-up plastic suits, hairnets and goggles worked along conveyor belts carrying small tubes along a packaging line.

Seqirus’ packaging lines are capable of producing 2 million flu vaccine doses every two weeks, said Jonathan Kegerise, vice president of manufacturing and the site head for the facility in Holly Springs. The 4.8 million doses of H5N1 were slotted in between batches of seasonal flu and didn’t affect the production of those shots.

Robotic arms filled and capped vials as workers stood watch and prepared machines for the next batch. Along the way, lights flashed as cameras captured images of the vials for quality control. They would undergo additional inspections before they were packed away, ready for shipping if the federal government decided the H5N1 vaccines were needed.

The liquid was mainly divided into 10-dose vials. Seqirus produced an additional 250,000 pre-filled, single-dose syringes for times when opening a 10-dose vial would be wasteful.

The H5N1 vaccine had already been manufactured at the same Seqirus facility and stored at temperatures between 35.6 and 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Concentrated doses are made ahead of time as part of the national stockpile.

The vaccine has now been poured into vials allowing public health officials to more easily distribute doses if they are needed.

Making the substance for the doses takes about a month, followed by a day to formulate a batch, another day to fill the vials, and one last day to inspect and package them.

Seqirus is producing all 4.8 million doses under a $22 million agreement with the federal government, the company said .

Two types of vaccines are being prepared as defenses against the H5N1 virus. In addition to the vaccine being readied at Holly Springs, in July, the government also directed $176 million to Moderna to develop mRNA influenza vaccines , including for H5N1.

The two vaccines use different technologies – mRNA can be made faster, in case a pandemic is spreading quickly; the more traditional, cell-based vaccine rolling off these assembly lines takes longer to produce.

It makes sense to now complete the cell-based vaccines that are already in the national stockpile, said Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, the founding director of Boston University’s Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases. She told USA TODAY an mRNA vaccine could help if the virus changes enough that a new vaccine has to be developed.

Still, Bhadelia, who worked in the Biden administration during COVID-19, worries that Congress hasn’t allocated enough money to get ahead of the bird flu virus.

“Nothing can happen without money,” she said.

The vaccine we have now

Scientists hope the vaccine being poured into vials here would protect someone against a severe H5N1 infection, but they aren’t sure.

So far it has been tested only in ferrets, the animal typically used by labs to test flu vaccines. Seqirus already manufactures an H5N1 vaccine that FDA has determined is safe and effective. This new bird flu vaccine replaces the H5N1 strain with the circulating virus.

The first human trials for the new vaccine have begun, starting with healthy people to ensure the vaccine triggers the desired effect on the immune system. Those results are expected later this year.

At this point, researchers believe the vaccine coming off this assembly line will be effective, but it's not guaranteed, Bhadelia said.

It’s also possible that by the time the virus transforms enough to become truly dangerous to large numbers of people, it will have changed so much that the vaccine that has been prepared here will no longer work, said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease and vaccine expert who directs the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Even if the vaccine works well, there’s the problem of scaling up production and getting it to enough people fast enough.

To work effectively, the vaccine requires two doses to be delivered at least three weeks apart. It’s unclear how much protection someone gets after the first dose. In emailed responses, Seqirus wouldn’t say when the vaccine doses expire and when they'd have to be replaced.

Delivering them to people will be challenging, too.

With the COVID-19 vaccine, it was more difficult than expected to get the doses from the warehouses to vaccine clinics and into arms. Cold storage, bottle size and other factors posed problems that had to be resolved on the fly.

The National Biodefense Plan , which Panjabi oversaw, was launched in 2022 with the goal of providing enough vaccines for all at-risk populations within four months of a pandemic’s start.

If bird flu could be addressed early enough – contained before it spreads beyond farmworkers and their families and not spread among the general public – it would be much easier to make enough vaccine and deliver it to the right people in four months' time.

That’s why some public health experts believe farmworkers should be offered vaccines before the virus has a chance to become more dangerous.

Vaccinating farmworkers would not reduce the number of people who become severely infected with bird flu, Bhadelia said, but she thinks they should be offered it as part of a research trial. "It will just potentially help with severe disease and to further our scientific understanding," she said.

Still, Dr. Nirav Shah, principal deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doesn’t think the time is right to start vaccinating anyone.

H5N1 has not caused serious cases of disease, it is not spreading person-to-person, and its genetics haven’t changed substantially since the vaccine was developed against it. Right now, he told reporters in late July, a readily available antiviral is a better tool for anyone infected or exposed than the vaccine would be.

“The H5 vaccine, at this moment in time, is not performing the job that we really need,” Shah said.

A different vaccination

Finland made a different decision. In June, Finnish officials began distributing 20,000 doses of a different Seqirus vaccine to people ages 18 and older exposed to animals they believed were susceptible to bird flu, including workers in the country’s mink industry.

In late July, fewer than 200 people in Finland had received shots, and the vaccines must be used by mid-September before they expire, said Mia Kontio, chief specialist for the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare's infectious disease control and vaccinations. Many Finns are on vacation in the summer, she added, so August is going to be “very hectic” to quickly immunize people with the two-dose regimen.

The return of wild migratory birds in the fall, potentially carrying the virus, add to the urgency, she said.

“We felt that it's our responsibility to actually do something if we can,” Kontio told USA TODAY. “Because the situation might change very quickly.”

Where are we now?

In the U.S., federal officials expanded regulations on interstate transportation of livestock in recent months. They've added alerts on products such as unpasteurized milk, and warned that shared equipment can spread the virus among animals.

They have also provided personal protective equipment, such as N95 respirators, goggles and gloves, in states affected by bird flu.

Recently, federal officials launched an effort to vaccinate livestock workers against the seasonal flu. That vaccine doesn’t offer any protection against H5N1, which is a different strain of influenza, said Shah, from the CDC.

Getting the seasonal vaccine, however, could prevent someone from simultaneously having both the seasonal flu, which is highly contagious, and H5N1, which can be extremely dangerous. A worst-case scenario would be a virus that combines the two, Shah said.

Flu viruses are known to exchange genes with one another, so such a combination is always possible.

“Viruses are sort of smart,” May Chu, a clinical professor of epidemiology at Colorado School of Public Health, told USA TODAY. “Our bodies offer the place where they replicate. And so if you don't let the virus into you, you aren't going to be contributing to the genetic growth of this virus. This is what you want to stop. Because the more people get infected, the more viruses grow, and the more chances of the genetic variant arising of deleterious effect.”

Such a combination, she emphasized, would be “bad for us.”

Spotted dove, gray-cheeked green-pigeon, greater coucal, square-tailed drongo-cuckoo, cave swiftlet, black-crowned night heron, common iora, brown prinia, plain prinia, black-headed bulbul, yellow-vented bulbul, ornate sunbird, scaly-breasted munia, javan munia, white-headed munia, exotic species.

Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.

Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).

Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.

Escapee : Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.

Xandra Pohl Flawlessly Executes Bold Office Siren Look With Tailored Corset, Micro Shorts

Ananya panchal | aug 21, 2024.

Xandra Pohl

Xandra Pohl is taking on the office siren trend and putting her own bold, Gen-Z twist on the sophisticated, sultry look. The Miami-based DJ , who traveled to Belize with photographer Derek Kettela for her debut in the 2024 SI Swimsuit issue, just announced her second cross-country tour, Body Say . She traveled to cities across the Midwest and East Coast earlier this year as part of her super successful Drunk tour earlier this year, and recently performed a DJ set at Lollapalooza this month.

In a new IG post, announcing the exciting new venture, which began last weekend at the Marquee in New York City and ends at Keys in Los Angeles on Nov. 23, donned a corporate core-inspired gray micro set from Revolve, paired with a orange and blue tie, loosely hung around her neck. She also shared additional pics from the photo shoot and flaunted her hourglass figure, toned arms and impeccable modeling skills.

This scoop-neck corset top features a structured bodice and back velcro closure, while the matching hot pants have a small concealed zip at the back.

The 23-year-old opted for a early 2000s-inspired glam look including a sheer wash of icy gray eyeshadow, a flawless base and glossy mauve lips, courtesy of makeup artist Charlie Riddle. The Ohio native’s long blonde locks were loose, smooth and perfeclty curled at the ends.

“another day in the office…,” Pohl captioned the carousel with tons of professional pics taken by Brendan Wixted , plus several beautiful and quirky behind the scenes snaps.

“I’d lose my mind if I was ur ex,” content creator Lexi Hidalgo commented.

“Was not ready for how good those last two slides were,” Sarah Nicole Landry wrote.

Beijing, moscow sign deals to strengthen cooperation.

China and Russia signed multiple cooperation documents on Wednesday covering areas such as investment, education, science and technology, and cross-border cargo transportation, as the two neighbors vowed to further tap potential in practical cooperation and bring bilateral ties to new levels.

The signing of the documents in Moscow was witnessed by Premier Li Qiang and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin after they co-chaired the 29th regular meeting between Chinese and Russian heads of government. The meeting has been held every year since 1996.

The leaders agreed that the two countries' strengths are complementary in practical cooperation and urged efforts to steadily advance collaboration in traditional areas, while expanding cooperation in emerging fields such as the digital economy, the biopharmaceutical sector and green development.

The two sides should also take the China-Russia Years of Culture as an opportunity to deepen cultural exchanges and strengthen the foundation of friendship between the Chinese and Russian people, they said.

Li said during the meeting that China-Russia relations have achieved high-quality development, with cooperation in all fields continuously showing strong resilience and advancing steadily in recent years.

Bilateral trade has maintained a momentum of growth, energy cooperation has seen improvements in terms of both quantity and quality, and collaboration in areas such as logistics, aerospace and aviation has gained impetus, while people-to-people exchanges have become more vibrant, he said.

In 2023, bilateral trade between China and Russia exceeded $240 billion, up 26.3 percent year-on-year, according to the Foreign Ministry.

"We are confident and also hopeful about further deepening the all-around and mutually beneficial cooperation between our two countries," Li said.

Mishustin spoke highly of the efficient operation of the two countries' intergovernmental cooperation mechanisms, noting that Russia stands ready to work with China in continuously deepening mutual trust, expanding cooperation and closely coordinating in global affairs to better safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.

The Russian prime minister also underlined the importance of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries in facilitating communication and fostering friendship.

According to Mishustin, in Russia, more than 90,000 students and schoolchildren are studying the Chinese language. Last year, the number of tourist trips between the two countries exceeded 1 million and Russia aims to "double this figure "by the end of December, he said.

Li arrived in Russia on Tuesday for a visit widely expected to carry forward the enduring friendship and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Russia.

On Wednesday morning, he visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow's Alexander Garden and laid a wreath.

Li also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

China and Russia have seen a series of high-level interactions over the past week. Vice-Premier He Lifeng and State Councilor Shen Yiqin had held meetings with senior Russian officials in Moscow respectively on Tuesday and Monday.

Last week, Vice-Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu held consultations with visiting Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Alexeevich Ryabkov in Beijing.

Qian Feng, an expert with Tsinghua University's National Strategy Institute and a senior research fellow at the Taihe Institute, a Beijing-based think tank, said China and Russia are developing bilateral relations on the basis of mutual strategic trust.

"The holding of the regular meeting itself demonstrated that the China-Russia relationship is a new type of international relations based on mutual respect, mutual trust and cooperation that benefits both sides," Qian said.

World News | Moscow claims it thwarted a new Ukraine push into Russia

“the purpose of this operation is to preserve the lives of our children”.

Military vehicles drive near the Russian-Ukrainian border in Sumy region, Ukraine, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia said Tuesday that its forces checked an effort by Ukrainian troops to expand a stunning weeklong incursion into the Kursk region, as a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Kyiv has no intention of occupying Russian territory.

Russian army units, including fresh reserves, aircraft, drone teams and artillery forces, stopped Ukrainian armored mobile groups from moving deeper into Russia near the Kursk settlements of Obshchy Kolodez, Snagost, Kauchuk and Alexeyevsky, a Russian Defense Ministry statement said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said the cross-border operation was aimed at protecting Ukrainian land from long-range strikes launched from Kursk.

“Ukraine is not interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region, but we want to protect the lives of our people,” Tykhyi was quoted as saying by local media.

He said Russia had launched more than 2,000 strikes from the Kursk region in recent months using anti-aircraft missiles, artillery, mortars, drones, 255 glide bombs and more than 100 missiles.

“The purpose of this operation is to preserve the lives of our children, to protect the territory of Ukraine from Russian strikes,” he said.

The commander of the Ukrainian military, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said in a video posted Tuesday to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel that Ukraine now controls 74 settlements in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian troops have continued to advance, gaining control over 40 square kilometers (15 square miles) of territory in the past 24 hours, Syrskyi said.

“Fights are ongoing along the entire front line. The situation, despite the high intensity of combat, is under control,” he added.

Ukraine’s Western partners have said the country has the right to defend itself, including by attacking across the border. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Tuesday that he backed the Ukrainian operation, though he said Kyiv officials did not consult him about it beforehand.

Russian military actions in Ukraine bear “the hallmarks of genocide, inhumane crimes, and Ukraine has every right to wage war in such a way as to paralyze Russia in its aggressive intentions as effectively as possible,” Tusk said.

Kremlin forces intensified their attacks in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s General Staff said Tuesday that over the previous 24 hours, Russian troops launched 52 assaults in the area of Pokrovsk, a town in Ukraine’s Donetsk region that is close to the front line. That’s roughly double the number of daily attacks there a week ago.

Ukraine’s undermanned army has struggled to hold back the bigger, better-equipped Russian forces in Donetsk.

The Ukrainian military claims that its charge onto Russian soil that began Aug. 6 has already encompassed about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Russian territory. The goals of the swift advance into the Kursk region have been a closely guarded military secret.

Analysts say a catalyst may also have been Ukraine’s desire to ease pressure on its front line by attempting to draw the Kremlin’s forces into defending Kursk and other border areas. If so, the increased pressure around Pokrovsk suggests Moscow did not take the bait.

Ukraine’s ambitious operation — the largest attack on Russia since World War II — has rattled the Kremlin. It compelled Russian President Vladimir Putin to convene a meeting Monday with his top defense officials.

Apparently, Ukraine assembled thousands of troops — some Western analysts estimate up to 12,000 — on the border in recent weeks without Russia noticing or acting.

About 121,000 people have been evacuated from Kursk or have fled the areas affected by fighting on their own, Russian officials say. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said it has seen geolocated footage indicating that Ukrainian forces advanced as much as 24 kilometers (15 miles) from the border.

The Russian Defense Ministry appeared to support that claim when it said Tuesday it had also blocked an attack by the units of Ukraine’s 82nd Air Assault Brigade toward Maryinka, which is about that distance from Ukraine.

Russian state television on Tuesday showed residents from evacuated areas lining up in buildings and on the street to receive food and water. Volunteers were pictured distributing bags of aid, while officials from the country’s Ministry of Emergency Situations helped people, including children and older people, off buses.

“There is no light, no connection, no water. There is nothing. It’s as if everyone has flown to another planet, and you are left alone. And the birds stopped singing,” an older man called Mikhail told Russian state television. “Helicopters and planes fly over the yard and shells were flying. What could we do? We left everything behind.”

A motive behind Ukraine’s bold dive into Russia was to stir up unrest, according to Putin, but he said that effort would fail.

Dara Massicot, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment, said the Ukrainian breakthrough was a smart move because it exploited gaps between various Russian commands in Kursk: border guards, Ministry of Defense forces and Chechen units that have been fighting on Russia’s side in the war.

Russian command and control is fractured in Kursk, Massicot said on X late Monday.

The Ukrainian Army’s General Staff announced Tuesday that it was establishing a 20-kilometer (12-mile) restricted-access zone along Russian-Ukrainian border in the northeastern Sumy region, which borders Kursk.

The measures were introduced because of the increasing intensity of combat in the area and the rising presence of Russian reconnaissance and sabotage units there, a statement said.

Hatton reported from Lisbon, Portugal. Associated Press writers Emma Burrows and Jim Heintz contributed to this report from Tallinn, Estonia.
