Classic rock group america is touring in 2023. we found tickets..

America's Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell sing and play guitar together onstage.

In 2023, you can finally hear “Sister Golden Hair,” “A Horse With No Name” and “Ventura Highway” and “Lonely People” live.

From Feb. 3 through Aug. 26, classic rock icons America will play 32 huge concerts all over, well, North America.

And if you’re in New Jersey, you’re in luck this year.

Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley’s America have five gigs lined up in the Garden State over the next few months.

First, the duo will perform back-to-back nights at Collingswood’s Scottish Rite Auditorium on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18 . From there, they’ll swing into New Brunswick’s State Theatre on March 3, Englewood’s Bergen Performing Arts Center on March 4 and finally Atlantic City’s Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort on June 10.

They’ll also be at Rochester, NY’s Kodak Center on March 11.

Not too shabby for a band that’s been together for 53 years and won the Grammy for Best New Artist way back in 1973.

However, if you follow America’s Instagram , it appears that the 70-year-old rockers haven’t lost a step at their live shows either.

They’re still rocking as hard as ever.

Plus, as a cherry on top of that, we’re happy to report that tickets are fairly inexpensive too.

At the time of publication, we wound some seats that were going for as low as $37 before fees on Vivid Seats.

All prices are subject to fluctuation.

Want to find the right show for you?

Keep reading — we’ve got everything you need to know about America’s upcoming tour below.

America 2023 tour dates

Bunnell, Beckley and the rest of America have big shows all winter, spring and summer .

Just a few of the biggest shows on their itinerary include dates in Canton (March 16), Honolulu (April 15), Kansas City (June 2), Milwaukee (July 12) and Detroit (July 14).

The fun comes to an end on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Los Angeles’ YouTube Theater .

A complete calendar including all America tour dates, venues, show start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

America set list

Even the most casual America fan knows the band will play their aforementioned greatest hits.

What else is on the band’s 21-song set list though?

Setlist.fm reports that America often opens with “Tin Man” and plays original cuts like “Don’t Cross The River,” “Daisy Jane” and “Greenhouse” among many other classics.

It also appears that they mix in a few classic rock staples from The Beatles, The Mamas & the Papas and Russ Ballard as well.

For those that want to dig deeper, we recommend checking out the band’s exhaustive setlist.fm page which has records of what tracks America played live at shows dating back to their early days in London.

America band member background

Fun fact: 1/2 of America isn’t American born — singer and guitarist Dewey Bunnell was actually born in Yorkshire, England to an American serviceman father and his English wife.

As for Gerry Beckley, he was also born to an American father and English mother. The only difference is he originally hails from Forth Worth, TX.

Bunnell and Beckley ended up forming the band with fellow founding member Dan Peek — who passed away in 2011 — in the late 1960s when the three attended London Central High School in Bushey Hall in north west London.

Classic rockers on tour in 2023

Many 70s rock stars are now in their 70s and show no signs of slowing down.

In fact, dozens of the biggest names from the pre-disco era are still going strong and will perform at arenas and stadiums all year long.

British folk-rock trio, America, came into prominence in the 1970s, following their debut hit single, "A Horse with No Name," channeling the likes of Neil Young and the Everly Brothers into their music.

Formed by vocalists/guitarists Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Greg Beckley, America gained several top ten hits with their soft, lilting melodies and gentle harmonies that floated over their folk-tinged soft rock. The band gained their first exposure after landing a contract with Jeff Dexter, promotor for the Roundhouse concert venue in london, securing the trio high profile support slots at the venue. Soon they were in the studio, recording their debut album by 1970.

With their debut single, America had a hit on their hands, with "A Horse With No Name" becoming a number three hit in the UK in 1972. Their self-titled debut album equally charted well, peaking at number 14. Revved up by their success in the UK, America soon set their sights on conquering the US, supporting the Everly Brothers on their national tour. Their single was then released in the US, becoming a number one hit, establishing the band across the pond. Their second single, "I Need You" and third single "Ventura Highway" became top ten hits, proving the band can produce consistently quality music. These initial successes were acknowledged by the Grammy Awards, receiving an award for "Best New Artist" in 1972.

Their second album, "homecoming," released in January 1973, failed to maintain the momentum of their previous records, unable to break into the top ten of the American charts. However, their next record, this time aided by producer George Martin, sent them back to fame, with "Holiday" peaking at number three and featuring the hit singles, "Tin Man" and "Lonely People." They gained their second number one hit with the single, "Sister Golden Hair," from the 1975 album, "Hearts," releasing a greatest hits album that same year which sold over four million copies.

The latter half of the decade saw popularity for America begin to wane, although they still released a Gold-certified record, "Hideaway," in 1976 and had a handful of top 40 hits through to the mid-1980s. Entering the new millennium, the trio released a set of live albums as well as the encompassing, extensive box set, "Highway," which covered the whole of their career to that point. They were brought back to the studio by longtime fans, Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins, recording their 2007 album, "Here & Now." The album featured guest artists who had been inspired by America, including Ryan Adams and Nada Surf.

Sadly in 2011, Dan Peek died at the age of 60. The band's legacy and influence was acknowledged through their indictment to the Vocal Group oHall of Fame, as well as receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Live reviews

America is a band I had the privilege of seeing several times back in the seventies. I was in high school when they released " A horse with no name". I saw them at an outdoor arena with a small amount of actual seats but with a Huge grassy area for seating. The Summer of Love (1969) was not that far in the past and a lot of folks were smoking pot on the lawn and just relaxing and having a good time.

Folk music was still pretty popular at the time and although America was not exactly a "Folk" band; they were a kinda of early "Folk/Rock" band. Their mix of acoustic guitars was one of the best parts of the performance. Their vocals are amazing. To this day;forty some years later; I still like to hear their music.

I saw them not long after their debut album came out so they did not have as many songs as they did later in their career. I caught them at another venue some years later and they had a much fuller set list with several "hit" songs. Most of the folks in the audience really enjoyed the show...as did I! The crowd all sand along when they played "Horse with no name". Most venues do not allow drinking these days (let alone "smoking") so the crowd was not quite as laid back. Still...many in the audience knew the lyrics and sang along.

Report as inappropriate

It was great to hear the old songs again but not sure this was the right venue. Very reserved performance. It was more of a medley of their biggest hits rather than a concert. A couple of times they let their guard down and jammed a little but for the most part they played 4/5ths of each hit and moved on to the next song quickly. It was very obvious they were on the clock. Brought back some great memories though so all in all not a total bust.

Saw them in Dallas and so glad that I did! Brought back so many good memories of high school. They sounded great, it was an awesome outdoor venue and the perfect night. Looking forward to seeing them again soon!

It was a GREAT show! They played all of their hits and more. WOW! I never realized what rockers they really are until last night. Go see THEM! I hope they keep on playing another 50 years.

AMERICA ROLLS OUT INITIAL 2023 TOUR DATES

AMERICA ROLLS OUT INITIAL 2023 TOUR DATES

Getty Images

America has rolled out its initial 2023 tour dates. The band, led by co-founders Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell , kicks things off on January 12th in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania at the Luhrs Center and has shows booked through August 19th when they hit Lowell, Massachusetts' Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

America is known for playing a high-octane hit-filled show, and Gerry Beckley told us that they've never underestimated the importance of America's core fanbase: “We have the most loyal fans; I think you'll find that across the board, no matter who you tap in to, if you go to a lot of these classic acts — I mean, we have people come 20, 30 times a year. There isn't millions of them, but there's enough to fill 100 shows a year. We go all over the planet.”

We asked Dewey Bunnell if after all these years working with Gerry Beckley he ever thinks of it almost like a marriage: “People say that, of course, yeah, and Gerry and I have had a few marriages that didn't last as long, but nevertheless, we've worked together since we were teenagers — y'know, we really went to high school together. Then, once we got established, made the first albums, had some success, moved to California — then you set up your own lives a little. You know where the areas are in your lives that you want to keep private and you know where you can blend your work with your lives.”

America

When America, the perennial classic-rock favorite, hit the road in 2023, they’ll celebrate their 53th Anniversary with their powerful performances. Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former band mate, the late Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name." America became a global household name and paved the way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Forty plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound.

America's journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," "Don't Cross The River," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," and "Sister Golden Hair" were cornerstones of 1970's Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of Gerry Beckley's melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell's use of folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with Dan Peek's more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics.

America's albums--six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales--displayed a fuller range of the trio's talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.

Enjoying massive success early in their career, America earned their stripes as musical soldiers on the battlefield amidst the excess, craziness and chaos of the 70's. The trio won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972 and began working with George Martin and Geoff Emerick in 1974. This successful team went on to record seven albums and several Top Ten hits, including "Tin Man," "Sister Golden Hair" and "Lonely People."

By the mid-70s, inter-band conflicts combined with an exhaustive touring and recording schedule exacted its toll on the group. With Peek's departure from the fold in 1977, Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell rose to the challenge and carried on as a duo. Shifts in sound and direction, changes in producers and managers, and a renewed dedication to the craft of songwriting helped rocket America to the upper reaches of the pop charts in 1982 with their smash single, "You Can Do Magic." During this tumultuous time in their career, Beckley and Bunnell immersed themselves in their craft, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work. Their growth as singers, songwriters and musicians has continued into the present day as illustrated by landmark releases such as 2000's Highway 3-disc box set, 2002's Holiday Harmony, an album comprised of seasonal classics and live showcases, 2007's Here & Now, 2009's Live In Concert: Wildwood Springs, 2011's Back Pages, and 2015's Lost And Found and America: Archives Vol. 1.

In 2020, the band released their ultimate 8-disc anniversary box set, Half Century (America Records), and streamed their concert special America--Live at the London Palladium for the very first time (it is commercially available as a DVD and CD). 2020 also saw the release of the book America, the Band, An Authorized Biography by journalist Jude Warne. She weaves original interviews with Beckley, Bunnell, and many others into a dynamic cultural history of America, the band, and America, the nation. Billy Bob Thornton wrote the foreword.

From their formative years, America has been a band capable of transcending borders with its uplifting music and positive message. Embracing a rainbow of divergent cultures, America's audiences continue to grow, comprising a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group's enduring appeal. "I think that the ingredients of the America sound are the basic fundamentals that translate internationally," explains Beckley. "The Italians are huge fans of dance music, but they also love a ballad--they're romantic at heart. It's the same in the Far East. A lot of times in these countries, we see people singing along, and they don't really know what the words mean. Music is truly the international language."

Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell of America To Resume 50th Anniversary Tour Stalled by Pandemic

Updated:

A conversation with the legendary songwriters on this long-awaited liberation from lockdown

They are one of this world’s most beloved and iconic bands, and have been seriously missed during the long season of lockdown, which caused them to stop their 50th anniversary tour when it was just getting started. Co-founded by Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, America has amassed a great songbook of timeless, cherished songs (including “Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway” and “Tin Man.”) as well as a vast network of fans around the world. They announced this week that they are thrilled that they can resume the tour at long last, starting in August, 2021. It was last August of 2020 that they released “Remembering,” a new classic by Beckley with a lyric video. It was the centerpiece of their sprawling eight-disc anniversary box set Half Century . Like all their great songs, it’s beautifully resplendent with their perfect harmonies. It’s a delightful musical love-letter to the songs and records that inspired their journey from doo-wop through Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound to the sunshiney splendor of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

Videos by American Songwriter

“After 50 years together, this song is about the time spent looking back rather than looking forward…so much to be grateful for,” says Beckley, who produced and mixed the song with Jeff Larson.

Also last year, America streamed their November concert special America–Live at the London Palladium  for the very first time. And in May of 2020, the book America, the Band: An Authorized Biography by journalist Jude Warne was published. It weaves original interviews with Beckley, Bunnell, and many others into a dynamic cultural history of America – both the band and the country. Here’s a brief talk with Gerry and Dewey about this resumption of their anniversary celebration tour.

It’s great to have the two of you together again, especially with this news that you will resume your tour starting in August. Has this been your longest time ever away from the road? GERRY BECKLEY:  I have never before in my professional life had this much time off. A year and a half. The word “off” is misleading because I’ve remained quite busy with writing and recording, something that usually takes a back seat to our hectic travel and performing schedule. DEWEY BUNELL: Most definitely this time between shows is unprecedented! We are now in our 51 st  year as a performing band with barely ever more than a month break a few times a year for holidays and vacations. How was that for you, to be essentially grounded for so long? DEWEY: I think for most people it helped not knowing actually how long the safety guidelines and work stoppage would be going into the shutdown. If we knew it was going to be 14 months, it may have been harder to endure. As each month passed, my mindset changed, slowly realizing it was going to be more of a marathon than simply a long-distance run. Thoughts and projections of when touring might resume seemed to change weekly, and I missed the travel/performance life more each month.   GERRY:  At my age (68), I’ve been very grateful to have the extended time to share with friends and family. During this time, have you done anything unexpected or new? GERRY : This break has given me time to explore my photography. I’m working toward another gallery exhibit here in Sydney, Australia.  DEWEY: I spent more time with our horse for one thing, and I dabbled in a few artistic pursuits around the house, but it was actually ‘new and unexpected’ to have the opportunity to spend such a long period of time at home with my wife and pets every day for 14 months.   Beyond the performances and band camaraderie, is there anything you missed about touring? DEWEY:  There’s a certain rhythm and pattern to life that develops over decades on the road that I treat as a challenge. I’m a creature of habit, so airports and hotels and ground transport vehicles all have certain things in common that I respond to in a similar way each day that makes the experience more comfortable for me. I become more self-sustaining in many ways…doing laundry, carrying supplies and food items like a survivalist. The day is always focused on the evening show and it’s hard to beat the satisfaction I feel getting back to the room later in the evening after a successful show, leaving a happy audience headed home. Then it all starts again the following day. GERRY : I’d say that missing my band and team has been the hardest part. We are all looking forward to feeling that energy from our fans and friends again. You released “Remembering” in 2020. Will there be more new music on the horizon?   GERRY: There is always something on the horizon. After such a long break from the road and from all your fans, how do you think it will feel when you take the stage on your first night back in August?

DEWEY: I’m prepared to be nervous because I have never really stopped having a bit of stage fright after all these years. GERRY:  I’m sure I’ll be thinking what a long, strange trip it’s been.

The Armed cancel US tour: “The finances of an indie band across the board are quite tenuous”

The hardcore punk collective were set to tour with Ho99o9

The Armed

The Armed have announced they are cancelling their scheduled US tour this year.

  • READ MORE: The Armed: once-mysterious hardcore collective strive to “give less of a shit”

In an Instagram post shared today (August 21), the band shared the full details behind the decision, which they acknowledged was “incredibly painful to do”.

“The domino effect of some cancellations beyond our control (weather, health, etc) in combination with some personal emergencies had forced costly, drastic pivots over the summer,” the statement reads.

“This led to a financial situation that we were hoping to quietly outmaneuver in the background over the last couple of months. However, as the tour moving into pre-production has called for resources we simply do not have, we’ve had to face facts that our current scenario is simply untenable. We cannot, at this moment, bring you the show.”

They lamented the loss of co-headlining with Ho99o9 , who also announced to their fans the cancellation on Instagram .

“As y’all know we take our live shows very serious,” they write. “We’re focusing on making that a better experience for y’all & currently finalizing and focused on our third album. Bummer we won’t be able to cross paths this fall. Truly appreciate your patience.” The two bands were slated to tour with opening acts DJ Haram and Kumo 99.

The Armed continue: “Please note that while this sucks shit, this is basic operating order and common behind the scenes stresses for bands like us. The finances of an indie band across the board are quite tenuous, and often dealt with in the aggregate. And one (or in this case, several) things going wrong often has consequences down the line.

Recommended

The Armed

“We seek NO extra sympathy. We apologize to you for the inconvenience. Countless peers are in very similar situations constantly—often handled quietly by a lot of elbow grease and cleverness. This is the unfortunate one that just pushes a bit past the breaking point.” The band maintains that they will still honor the festivals where they’ve been booked. “We are going to perform at them with the fury of a hundred billion suns,” they state. “Seriously. Get ready to catch the most insane 3 pm side stage sets of your fucking life.”

In recent years, artists have had to cancel their US tours in light of escalating financial costs. “This is the tough reality of the music industry, whether you’re signed or independent,” said Rachel Chinouriri yesterday after announcing the cancellation of her US dates. Other artists like Little Simz and Hard Life (FKA Easy Life) also admitted similar challenges in attempting to tour North America.

Earlier this year, at a Featured Artist Coalition panel chaired by NME , Hard Life frontman Murray Matravers spoke about the band’s decision to cancel their planned tour dates: “We had to cancel them both [US and Europe tours] at the last minute because we were going to be losing tens of thousands of pounds.”

“I’m actually talking with the band and management about our next tour, and we’re having to think about it in a whole new way because touring just isn’t financially sustainable at all,” he continued.

New artists aren’t spared from financial woes either – last year, The Chemical Brothers revealed that they skipped the US because “the costs have gone up so much.”

“I’m apologetic to the people who do want to see us that it is increasingly difficult for us to get to America because we have had the times of our lives playing there.”

The Armed released their fifth studio album ‘Perfect Saviors’ last year. Prior to its release, in an interview with NME , lead singer Tony Wolski spoke on the band’s modus operandi of “radical inclusion”.

“The people who identify with the deepest sub genres are the people who tend to create some sort of identity for themselves that’s rooted in some superior version of authenticity,” he says. “The point of these albums is to emphasise that it’s silly to find authenticity in any of this, because all it ultimately is now is superficial gatekeeping.”

Legendary punk band says tour will be last: ‘We may never play your town again’

Legendary punk band X is going on a farewell tour this fall, including two Upstate New York concerts. But it may be your last chance to see the group live.

X, featuring dual lead singers John Doe and Exene Cervenka, released its first album, “Los Angeles,” in 1980 and helped define the L.A. punk scene. More than four decades later, they released their ninth album, “Smoke & Fiction,” in August and announced “The End is Near” tour dates.

“I hope people will come see us play, because — not to be weird — we may never play your town again. But that’s true every night, right?” Cervenka told Billboard in a new interview. “Just a reminder: Life is short, but it’s up to people to listen to the record or come see us if they want. Or not. We’re really happy with this record. And that’s its own reward, no matter what happens.”

X is scheduled to perform Sept. 25 at Empire Live in Albany and Sept. 26 at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester. Tickets for Albany are $38.50 through Ticketmaster , while Rochester tickets are $49.36 via TicketWeb ; fans can also look for tickets on VividSeats and StubHub .

X is considered one of the most influential American punk rock bands. Their first two albums were ranked among the 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone, and X songs have been featured in movies like “The Kids Are Alright,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “G.I. Jane,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

Cervenka, who was married to Doe from 1980 to 1985 and actor Viggo Mortensen from 1987 to 1997, confirmed that this would be a final tour but said X may continue performing after that.

“Are we going to travel around America, endlessly, getting in and out of a van, in and out of the motel, back and forth to a club at this age? Up and down the stairs to the dressing room and lug our equipment and our suitcases around? No, no, we’re not going to keep doing that,” she told Billboard. “We’re going to do it to the end of the year, and then we’ll reassess. We have festival dreams for next year and Little Stevie’s garage rock cruise in May. I would be happy if we could do a couple of festivals and that, but we’ll see what happens.”

Nefesh Mountain: The Love And Light Tour

The original pittsburgh winery.

Since their formation nearly a decade ago, Nefesh Mountain has been proudly open and vocal about their background and heritage as Jewish Americans, and are among the first preeminent Americana / Bluegrass bands to infuse Jewish tradition and soul into the beautifully diverse tapestry of American roots music. For them the music is wholly American, freely expressing their own identities while at the same time addressing the hate, discrimination, anti-semitism and racism that still remains at large in America and the World today. The band has recorded and shared the stage with Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, John Doyle, Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers), Mark Schatz (Bèla Fleck, Nickel Creek), Mike Gordon (Phish) and Tony Trischka among others. The Troubadours along with their band continue to forge new paths in unknown territory, armed with Zasloff and Lindberg’s strong, smokey, and folksy vocals and Lindberg’s soulful and masterful skills on guitars and banjo alike.
