World Travel Connector

Hello and welcome to World Travel Connector! I am glad you stopped by!

I am Milijana, a traveler from Croatia and the person behind World Travel Connector . Although I don’t prefer to talk about myself much, I believe it’s necessary to introduce myself here. I started this travel website as my creative outlet writing poems about my travels. After some time I started getting zillion questions on practical travel tips in my inbox. So, I found out that people need them and that I can help with them too. I decided to serve the readers of this website with all the knowledge and skills I have.

Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona should be a part of your USA southwest road trip

So, along with my travel poetry ( at the moment I am taking a break from travel poetry here, but only for a while !), you can find travel guides, travel itineraries, and tips related to travel accessories on worldtravelconnector.com I am a hard-core introvert who is highly independent, curious about the world, and possesses an insatiable thirst for self-growth. I enjoy researching destinations, tailoring my travel itineraries, chasing my new journeys, and deeply reflecting on my travels.

Milijana Gabric in front of Giza pyramids in Egypt by WorldTravelConnector.com

I travel solo. But I am rarely ever alone. And, never lonely. I meet local people and other fellow travelers on my travels who quite often become my new friends. Solo travel has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Milijana Gabric from WorldTravelConnector.com with an Indonesian girl

Some of the most beautiful things about traveling are being surprised by discovering new places you knew nothing about, meeting welcoming local people and learning about their lives, customs, and traditions, … and reminding yourself ‘ what a tiny place you occupy in the world ‘.

Milijana Gabric from WorldTravelConnector.com in Petra in Jordan

I prefer to leave room for exploration and spontaneous moments on my travels. That’s why I prefer slow traveling. In my case, slow travel means traveling for a month in one country on average and then moving to a new country. I usually travel for several months visiting several countries in a row. And when I notice that I need some more time for reflection, and even for a travel detox (yes, long-term traveling can be sensory and emotionally overwhelming!), I go back to my home base in Croatia .

Milijana Gabrić from WorldTravelConnector.com in Montenegro I San Stefan island, Montenegro I

Maybe you would like to know what’s my favorite place I’ve traveled to. I must disappoint you, as there is no single place. It’s impossible to compare deserts, volcanoes, lakes, and rivers … I seek magnificent landscapes and spectacular World Heritage sites. I do visit tourist attractions. They are attractions for a good reason. But the welcoming and kind people I meet on my travels keep me longer in one place.

Milijana Gabrić in Bali rice terraces

Here is a short selection of places that have captured my heart:

  • Myanmar – for Burmese people, the kindest people I’ve ever met,
  • Tuscany – for the beautiful landscapes, art, and architecture,
  • Israel – for glorious Biblical places and amazing foods from Israel ,
  • Thailand – for stunning sandy beaches, good food, and good-hearted people,
  • Venice – a matchless architectural masterpiece in a wonderful sea lagoon,
  • Angkor Wat and Angkor – an unrivaled architectural complex and archaeological site covering an impressive area of 400 km2.

Milijana Gabrić in Bagan in Myanmar I Bagan is one of top Myanmar destinations

In case you might want to know:

  • My favorite color is white ,
  • My favorite beverage is coffee ,
  • My favorite drink is red wine ,
  • My favorite foods are seafood and cheese ,
  • My favorite fruits are grapes and figs ,
  • My favorite snacks are almonds ,
  • The person I love the most and I admit it openly is my younger brother Ante ( Ante is the Croatian version of Anthony ). Ante has been quadriplegic and using a mechanical ventilator for breathing for the past 17 years due to muscular dystrophy. Nevertheless, he loves life, and his sister and he is the greatest supporter of her travels. UPDATE: Ante passed away in January 2021. His sister strongly believes he looks after his sister from Heaven now .

As I have already said, I prefer not to talk about myself and I believe this introduction was necessary here. Instead, I prefer to talk about how I can help you .

Rome

Yes we are back. Everything went well. The car transports in Brisbane and Phuket were all on time and drivers very courteous. Le Meridien was an excellent resort and we appreciated being out of the maddening crowd (Patong). Although we did go to Patong on several days for cheaper food/meals. Breakfast at Le Meriden was buffet and first class Plenty of security so felt completely at ease at the resort plus the benefits of the pools and exclusive use of beach. Rooms and room service could not be faulted. Singapore Swissotel likewise was excellent. Buffet breakfast first class. Rooms and room service excellent. Plenty to see and do but 3 days not enough time to do Singapore justice.

Although a little tired the experience was 5 star.

Joan and Roy

Thank you for your professional and efficient handling of numerous, difficult and complicated travel arrangements for me (including unusual routes through Europe, Asia and Middle East) – all went extremely well! However, thank you more so, for your exceptional kindness and care when your assistance was needed urgently and ‘out of hours’. This was much appreciated, especially as I was travelling on my own. Looking forward to the next one! Thank you!

To the Customers and New Travellers,

I have arranged my travel through World Travel Connections for about 10 years now as a frequent traveller.  The firm, run by Nicolas Delacharlerie and…, has always provided me with the best travel options, the best access to deals and promotions and most importantly ready access by email or phone wherever I am in the world.  They certainly have their customer’s interest at heart.  They are a pleasure to sit down and discuss plans in a friendly yet professional capacity. They will continue to have my business because of their professionalism and caring nature.

Christopher

On behalf of Natalie Maree Caruana, Emmah Caruana, Sarah Caruana and I we would like to thank Nicolas and Janet of World Travel Connections. Amazing personal service, unique destinations, no place he wasn’t totally accross and his flexibility and compassion given our personal circumstances was and is amazing. He personally drove us to the airport. We could not recommend any other travel agent. A new friend for life. Thanks again Nicolas.

Natalie & Robert

Nicolas we loved it! You put together a great package. Savanna Private Game Reserve in Sabi Sands was probably the benchmark in the safari lodge space but Chobe & Xugana Island were also very good. Savanna really succeeds in limiting the number of Jeeps at wildlife sightings so it greatly maximises the experience. They are also more prepared to go off road rather than stick to recognised tracks. Great stuff when chasing a pack of wild dogs after Impala & a Waterbuck. We saw all the Big Five by the end of the first full day but not limited to static viewing—- really active sightings sometimes.  Vic Falls are amazing!! As was Table Mountain.  The Blue Train was also well worth doing. All transfers by the two main businesses were exceptionally professional & informative. Small planes,mud/grass runways, dingy pickup etc in the Delta was all very different!

Finishing it off at Trou aux Biches in Mauritius was just what we needed after all of the above.

Highly recommended the whole thing.

Nick and Janelle

“I have had a fantastic holiday both with Scenic tours and my trip around UK visiting friends. The river cruise was excellent but pretty full on…. go… go…. go !! No rest for the wicked !!  Company ,food ,tours, staff, all excellent. No complaints !”.

“I have used World Travel Connections happily for over a decade.  All requests have been met and in many cases exceeded my expectations.  Nicolas has handled all situations both here and when we required his help overseas with precision and professionalism”.

Thank you so much for arranging our Europe trip this year. Everything ran smoothly and we had an amazing time. We want you to know how much we appreciated your great customer service through the planning and during the trip itself. We look forward to the day we can do another trip like this and you’ll be the first one we call!

Kind regards, JP and N

Thank you for taking such fabulous care of my family on our recent overseas trip. You demonstrated considerable ingenuity in sourcing tricky and urgent flight arrangements. You went above and beyond to ensure our family had a positive travel experience and I felt completely supported knowing that you were always just a phone call or email away. We look forward to travelling with you again.

Warm regards, Gaby

Record-setting numbers expected for Fourth of July travel

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)—AAA Blue Grass says 71 million people are expected to travel for the Fourth of July holiday nationwide.

This is expected to be a new record for the holiday. More than 800,000 of those travelers will be Kentuckians and more than 91% of them are planning to hit the pavement.

“Plan to get on the road early,” said Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA Blue Grass. “Those days leading up, like the 3rd is going to be a very, very busy day for travel and then coming back. A lot of people are coming back on the 7th especially.”

June 29 to July 7, Weaver Hawkins says, is considered the Fourth of July travel period.

She reminds people to do a once-over of the vehicle they’re taking on their trip. This means checking the tires, battery, and fluids before heading out.

“We’ll certainly come to your rescue, but we’d rather that your road trip is not marred by being stranded by the roadside,” said Weaver Hawkins.

While most Kentuckians are opting to drive, AAA says more than 4% are set to fly.

“Try to get to that airport a good two hours ahead of your flight rather than an hour. Nationwide, there are a lot of people flying. In fact, it’s expected to set a record for Fourth of July,” said Weaver Hawkins.

Weaver Hawkins says while it’s important to get to your destination safely, it’s just as important to be safe while you’re there.

“Make sure that you have your ID and your credit cards in a safe, secure wallet or purse, or bag,” said Weaver Hawkins. “That way, you keep your eyes on it at all times, and it’s not a kind that can be easily grabbed or cut, like the strap being cut, that sort of thing.”

She says it’s also a good idea to talk with your kids before the trip and go through some safety expectations you have.

Even if you’re not traveling very far for the holiday, don’t forget there’s going to be a lot of traffic, even just in our local communities.

Weaver Hawkins says last year, there were more than 3,000 crashes resulting in 19 fatalities on Kentucky roadways during the July 4th travel time.

Putin looks to exploit Moscow ISIS-K attack

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has seized on the Moscow attack carried out by ISIS-K last week that killed more than 130 people at a concert hall by linking it to Ukraine, spurring fears he may use the tragedy to mobilize more forces and ramp up the war against Kyiv.

The Friday attack, in which multiple gunmen opened fire into a crowd at the Crocus City Hall in the Moscow regional city of Krasnogorsk and set fire to the music venue, is the worst massacre to hit Russia in 20 years.

That’s putting Ukraine and the West on edge as officials try to fend off blame from Russian officials for allegedly supporting the attackers.

Samantha de Bendern, an associate fellow at the Russia and Eurasia program at Chatham House, said Putin sees growing vulnerabilities in Ukraine because of the U.S. holdup on more aid, and has already been looking to escalate missile attacks on the country as air defenses weaken.

At the same time, the attack at Crocus City Hall highlights Russia’s failure to safeguard against threats and heed calls from the U.S. to prevent the incoming attack.

“Putin has no choice but to blame the Ukrainians, because if he doesn’t blame the Ukrainians, he has to face the fact that he did not heed the warnings from the U.S.,” she said. “He can deflect responsibility for having ignored a terrorist threat and continue bombarding Ukraine.”

John Herbst, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, said Russia is seizing an opportunity to whip up public support for not just the war against Ukraine but also a future mobilization.

“He’s trying to change the perception of the war in society in order to do that mobilization — and this was a way to do it,” he said.

Eleven people were detained and four suspects were charged in connection to the Friday attack.

ISIS-K, the Afghanistan affiliate of the extremist and widely condemned Islamic State group, claimed responsibility for the attack, and U.S. intelligence has supported that conclusion.

But in an address Saturday , Putin said the attackers were fleeing toward Ukraine, where they had a “window” to escape, and pledged to find “whoever directed them.”

In Monday remarks, Putin admitted the assailants were “radical Islamists” but said the attack could benefit Ukraine, which he accused of having “never hesitated to use the most dirty and inhumane means to achieve their goals.”

“This crime can only be a link in a chain [from] those who are at war with our country since 2014,” he said, noting the date when Russian-backed separatists began fighting in eastern Ukraine.

“These steps make up a logical sequence of terrorist attacks and attempts to intimidate Russian society and sow discord,“ he continued, “at the same time [trying] to show their own population that the Kyiv regime is still strong.”

Russian influencers also fanned the flames after the attack.

Margarita Simonyan, editor in chief of the state-run news channel Russia Today, wrote on social media that because Western intelligence agencies knew of the attack beforehand, they must have been involved.

“They KNEW who the performers were. Before arrest. This is direct participation,” she wrote.

The White House said it shared intelligence with Russia in early March about a planned terror attack and warned Americans living in the country, but said there was no Ukrainian or Western involvement.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby called the attempts to link Ukraine to the attack “more Kremlin propaganda” and a push to “scratch out some sort of justification for the continued violence” against Kyiv.

“It should surprise exactly nobody Mr. Putin and his cronies in the Kremlin keep trying to find a way to pin this on Ukraine,” he told reporters Monday. “There was no linkage to Ukraine. This was an attack carried out by ISIS-K operatives. Period.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also pushed back against the Russian claims in a video address , arguing that “Putin and other scoundrels” were distorting the message for propaganda purposes.

“This absolute miserable Putin, instead of attending to his own citizens of Russia,” Zelensky said, “remained silent for a day, thinking about how to link this to Ukraine.”

During the war, Ukraine has consistently attacked border regions of Russia, including Belgorod, and infrequently Ukrainian attacks have struck as deep as the capital of Moscow. But those attacks have largely targeted Russian defense capabilities, military and political figures or infrastructure linked to the war.

The gunmen from Crocus City Hall were from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia. The country is predominantly Muslim and borders Afghanistan, where ISIS-K is based.

While ISIS is largely suppressed by international campaigns in Syria and Iraq — including with forces from Russia and the U.S. — its Afghanistan branch has resurged following the 2021 American withdrawal from the country, where the Taliban rule with a limited ability to fight off insurgents. ISIS-K was also responsible for a deadly bombing in Iran in January that killed 95 people.

Last week’s attack also exposed a vulnerability in the heart of Russia.

Pavel Baev, a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution, said it was a “colossal failure of the security services” in Russia due to them having been focused on Ukraine and less so on terrorism.

“What is important [for Putin] is to counter with something to restore the credibility of leadership, to show him strong and not weak,” Baev said. “It is possible to blame Ukraine, but then what?”

It’s not clear how much more Putin could escalate the war in Ukraine if he chose to do so in the aftermath of the concert hall attack. Russia has thrown nearly everything it has on the battlefield at Ukrainian cities and frequently targets Ukraine with missiles and drones.

Putin ordered a partial mobilization in 2022, increased his military’s size and tightened recruiting laws, though he has refrained from any further action since, given they can lead to public pressure.

But analysts agree that Putin may be able to use the Crocus tragedy to mobilize more forces, a possibility since his Defense Ministry called for the creation of two new ground armies by the end of the year.

“He’s got another justification for his mobilization,” said Chatham House’s de Bendern.

Russians are largely united behind Moscow against Ukraine, but that could change amid another mobilization, which tend to be unpopular. The war is already taking a toll, too. The U.S. this year estimated that Russia has suffered at least 315,000 casualties in the more than two-year-old war.

Politics and public opinion may be less in focus, with elections behind the Kremlin. Putin cemented his grip on power this month, winning a presidential election that many in the West condemned as rigged. And the war has increasingly shifted in Russia’s favor, with Russian troops pushing forward incrementally on the battlefield as Ukrainian forces run low on supplies, and further U.S. aid to Kyiv is in doubt.

But Herbst, from the Atlantic Council, said even if Putin tries to push for increased mobilization, it will be difficult shaping public opinion with the available evidence.

“Given ISIS formally taking credit, given what the U.S. did before the terror attack,” he said, and “given the widespread coverage of this on the global media, it will be hard to do.”

That brings an end to our live updates on the Ukraine war for this evening.

We'll bring you any major updates overnight. In the meantime, you can scroll through the blog below to catch up on the day's developments.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a direct message to the two Russian top generals who are the subject of fresh arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court.

The court has accused Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov of war crimes and the crime against humanity of inhumane acts.

In his nightly video address, Mr Zelenskyy said: "Shoigu, Gerasimov – your path to The Hague is open."

The Ukrainian president also said the official start of Ukraine's ascension into the EU today was a "historic result", adding: "We will definitely implement everything necessary to advance through each chapter of our relations with the EU and to create a treaty – a treaty of Ukraine's accession."

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian defence minister Andrei Belousov spoke over the phone today, in what marked the first call between Mr Austin and his Russian counterpart since March 2023.

The two men discussed the importance of open lines of communication, the Pentagon said.

Spokesperson Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said Mr Austin had initiated the conversation.

Mr Belousov was appointed to the role of defence minister last month after the shock dismissal of longtime minister Sergei Shoigu by Vladimir Putin.

Some of the returned Ukrainian soldiers were prisoners taken from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the head of the Ukrainian president's office has said.

Andriy Yermak said of the 90 fighters returned by Russia today, 52 were from a large group of Ukrainians captured while trying to defend the Azovstal steelworks in southern Ukraine while others had been held as prisoners after the capture of Chernobyl.

Both sites were seized by Russia early in the war.

Mr Yermak described the latest prisoner swap as an "important exchange".

"Thanks to our team for their work. Grateful to the UAE for facilitating the exchange. We will return everyone," he said.

Russia and Ukraine have each returned 90 prisoners of war in the latest swap between the two countries, the Russian defence ministry has said.

In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said Russian prisoners were returned with the United Arab Emirates acting as an intermediary.

The prisoners were being flown to Moscow for medical checks, it added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a post to social media that 90 Ukrainian soldiers were returned by Russia.

"We remember all our people in Russian captivity. We continue our work for the release of everyone. We seek the truth about everyone who may be held by the enemy," he said, as he thanked the Ukrainian exchange team.

The EU has launched its 14th package of sanctions against Russia - this time targeting Vladimir Putin's liquefied natural gas exports (LNG) for the first time.

The measure is the latest attempt by the bloc to deny Mr Putin's regime of money as his war on Ukraine drags into its 29th month.

The sanctions, which will kick in after a nine-month transition period, fall short of an outright ban on Russian LNG shipments.

This partly reflects the fact that EU members are themselves still allowed to buy LNG from Moscow - even though the bloc has set a target of phasing out Russian fossil fuels by 2027.

The EU followed the lead of the United States and the UK in banning Russian oil imports, with one or two limited exceptions, in 2022 after Russia attacked Ukraine.

What latest sanctions do

The key measure in the package, signed off late last week in the face of opposition from Germany and Hungary, is a ban on trans-shipments off EU ports of Russian LNG - essentially preventing the commodity from being sold to third countries via EU ports.

Part of the package also targets specific vessels - including an initial 27 oil tankers - that are used to get around the price cap slapped on Russian oil by the G7 countries.

It will also, in time, target vessels caught, for example, carrying ammunition from North Korea to Russia or transporting grain stolen from Ukraine by Moscow.

The latest package of sanctions also bans new investments and services to complete LNG projects under construction in Russia.

That should, in theory, stymie Russia's attempts to build out its LNG exports and grow market share.

Other elements include bans on EU businesses from using the Bank of Russia's system for transfer of financial messages (SPFS) system - the Bank of Russia's version of the West's Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) inter-bank messaging system.

Under this measure, the European Council will be allowed to draw up a list of non-Russian third-country banks connected to the system and ban them from doing business with EU operators.

Targeting rich Russians and pop stars

There are also restrictions on access to Russian media, as well as new technological and export restrictions and a fresh blacklist of a further 116 people deemed to be supporting the war, including the singer Yaroslav Dronov, who performs under the name Shaman and whose song 'I'm Russian' was reportedly played daily to Alexei Navalny, the late democracy campaigner, in his Arctic Circle prison cell.

Also targeted was another popular Russian singer, Polina Gagarina, who performed before Putin at an event in Crimea following the invasion of Ukraine.

The EU has also introduced a number of bans, targeting wealthy Russians, on private jet travel to EU resorts.

Announcing the measures, the European Commission said: "As the Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, the EU remains determined to keep acting to further reduce Russia's sources of revenue and capacity to wage war.

"Today's measures send a clear and strong signal of EU unity and of our support to Ukraine and its people."

Will watered-down sanctions have any impact?

The big question is whether these latest sanctions will actually have much impact - particularly in view of the fact that they were watered down.

Germany, for example, reportedly prevented a widening of measures that would have forced EU companies to guarantee that their customers would not be able to sell prohibited goods to Russia.

And Hungary - the value of whose Russian LNG imports is up 59% year on year - is said to have demanded assurances that no current or future measures will impact the Paks II nuclear power plant which is being built by the state-owned Russian power company Rosatom 63 miles to the south-west of Budapest.

The chances are that the sanctions will only go so far in hurting Russia.

Still a major supplier

According to Kpler, the data provider, Russia is the second-biggest supplier of LNG to the EU after the United States. It says that, so far this year, the US has met 41% of the EU's LNG needs and Russia 21%.

And in May this year, for the first time since just after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, imports of Russian LNG were greater than those of American LNG.

Nor do these sanctions cover imports of Russian gas transported to the EU through pipelines via Turkey and Ukraine itself.

Much of this ends up in central European countries such as Austria, which in the first five months of this year had 80% of its gas needs met by Russia, but also countries such as Italy and Belgium.

Moreover, while the bans on trans-shipments will make it harder for Russian LNG exports to reach their intended destination, they are unlikely to stop them altogether.

They will just force Russia to use longer shipping routes - while a lot of the LNG previously being exported in this way is now, ironically, likely to be sold to customers in Europe itself.

It is always encouraging to see the EU seeking to deprive Putin's war machine of money.

But these sanctions could have gone a lot further. That they did not highlights the extent to which the EU still relies on Russian gas.

Donald Trump has been presented with a plan to end the war in Ukraine if he is elected to the White House in November.

The Reuters news agency reports that two key advisers for the presumptive Republican nominee have put forward the plan, which involves telling Kyiv it will only get more US military aid if it enters peace talks.

At the same time, the US would warn Moscow that refusal to negotiate would result in increased support from Washington for Ukraine, according to retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg.

Lt Kellogg and Fred Fleitzl, who were both chiefs of staff in Trump's National Security Council while he was president and who came up with the plan, said a ceasefire would be based on prevailing battle lines during peace talks.

Mr Fleitzl said Trump showed a positive attitude towards the plan.

"I'm not claiming he agreed with it or agreed with every word of it, but we were pleased to get the feedback we did," he said.

The Kremlin has said any peace plan from a future Trump administration would need to reflect the battlefield "reality" - but that Vladimir Putin was open to talks.

"The value of any plan lies in the nuances and in taking into account the real state of affairs on the ground," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

From the Ukrainian side, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said freezing the war at prevailing front lines would be "strange".

"Ukraine has an absolutely clear understanding and it is spelled out in the peace formula proposed by President Zelenskyy, it is clearly stated there - peace can only be fair and peace can only be based on international law," he said.

Four people have injured in a Russian attack on Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine, an official has said.

Regional governor Oleg Synegubov said Russia hit the village of Bobrivka with "at least four" guided aerial bombs this afternoon.

Two women, aged 87 and 40, and two men aged 67 and 56 were injured, he said.

The women were treated on the spot while the two men were hospitalised for treatment.

Ukrainian police say they have detained a man involved in the alleged torture of a former soldier in Ukraine's fourth-largest city of Dnipro.

The National Police service said on Telegram that Dmytro Yavornytskyi was targeted last Thursday by a group of men in balaclavas and camouflage who injured and put handcuffs on him.

The men have since been identified and one has been detained today, the service said.

Dnipro's regional prosecutor's office has begun criminal proceedings alleging illegal deprivation of liberty and torture.

More now from Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov, who has warned of "tragic and fatal" consequences if the West underestimates Russia's determination.

Mr Ryabkov said Moscow was ready to stand up for itself "and ensure its own interests in any situation".

"I don't even want to assume that this underestimation could become tragic and fatal," he said, adding the West was confronting a major nuclear power.

"There are different ways to respond to this - rhetorical and practical. We have the resources to convey signals to the West in the field of nuclear deterrence, even in the absence of our opponents' willingness to conduct a sober dialogue. But there is a danger, it cannot be underestimated, that their side may make a mistake. We will try not to," Mr Ryabkov said at a conference in Moscow.
