WHAT IS WALL STREET ?

Wall Street is a street in Lower Manhattan that is the heart of the Financial District.

It’s named Wall Street for the actual wall here during Dutch colonial times.

When New York City was New Amsterdam, its governor Peter Stuyvesant ordered that a defensive wall be built at the northern border of the colony.

CastelloPlanOriginal

The wall was meant to keep out any hostile native Americans, but also invasions from the British who were attempting to take over the colony.

Eventually, the town outgrew its wall and the structure was torn down.

Today, the name Wall Street is synonymous with American financial capital.

The New York Stock Exchange is located on Wall Street and is one of the most significant financial institutions in the world.

Thus, Wall Street is so much more than a street - it is considered a hub of international business, part of America’s history and rich in tourist attractions.

Visit Tr inity Church

The magnificent Trinity Church is the third structure to house the Anglican parish established here in 1697 under charter by King William III.

Trinity Church contains some of America’s oldest and most beautiful stained glass.

The interior is on par with many of Europe’s historic churches.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @rodneycpa

The first Trinity Church was built in 1698, in the style of the surrounding colonial architecture. It was made of wood and was burned down by the Great Fire of 1776.

The church is truly a gem of NYC. You can visit the church during opening hours. They ask that you be quiet and respectful, especially when worship is occurring.

Learn more about this historic site, visiting hours, and their service schedule by reading our post on Trinity Church .

See the New York Stock Exchange

Located at the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street, you can find the iconic New York building that houses the NYSE.

It was completed in 1903 and has since been home to the NYSE ever since.

The NYSE predates the building, however. The Exchange grew out of a 1792 agreement between 24 stockbrokers that would regulate their trading.

Twenty-five years later, this agreement was codified with the creation of the New York Stock & Exchange Board.

In 1863, the name was shortened to the New York Stock Exchange.

The building is one of the most photographed in the world. Though public tours are no longer permitted, you can take a "virtual tour”.

Take a look at our full post on the New York Stock Exchange , for the virtual tour as well as a video of the trading floors.

TIP: For those interested in finance and history, we recommend that you take a finance-focused tour of Wall Street. You can see what tours are available here .

Go to Federal Hall National Memorial

Located at the corner of Wall Street and Broad Street, this impressive neo-classical building is built on the site where New York City’s first City Hall stood.

The statue of George Washington depicts his swearing-in in 1789 as the first president of the United States.

The site was also the first home to the U.S. Congress before it moved one year later temporarily to Philadelphia and then to its permanent home in Washington, DC.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Revolutionary Roadtrip (@rev.roadtrip)

It is free to go inside the memorial where there is a small museum. Though there is not a lot to see, it’s quality over quantity that counts!

If you are looking for other free attractions and museums, click here .

Find out about what you will see inside, as well as open hours, from our detailed post on Federal Hall National Memorial .

See the Fearless Girl Statue

On March 8, 2017, International Women’s Day, “Fearless Girl” appeared in Lower Manhattan staring down the “Charging Bull” Statue ( See below ).

The statue was conceived as part of an ongoing push for corporate boards to include more women. "Fearless Girl” symbolizes the fight for gender equality in the workforce.

Considered a piece of art illegally left on a city street, the NYC government originally agreed to let her stay only for 7 days.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vania Mier Emprendiendo sin Manual (@vania.mier)

Nevertheless, she persisted and she was moved to a more permanent location across the New York Stock Exchange.

Since 2019, replicas of Fearless Girl have appeared in London, Melbourne, and Oslo.

Read more about her in our post on the Fearless Girl .

40 Wall Street (The Trump Building)

40 Wall Street is one of the most famous and oldest skyscrapers in NYC . It was constructed in 1929, it was designed to be the tallest building in the world.

Unfortunately, at the same time, some other buildings were fighting for the same title.

In the 1929 ‘race to the top’, 40 Wall Street lost out to the Chrysler Building , which then was topped by the Empire State Building .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by S.Valentino (@pixematize)

Today, 40 Wall Street is owned by a quite famous New Yorker – Donald Trump. It is free to visit Trump Tower. Read our post to find out all about it.

You can also take a free ‘presidential’ tour of all his buildings in NYC. Just click here .

Additional Sites

Morgan Guaranty Trust - corner of Wall Street and Broad Street. This was J.P. Morgan’s bank.

In 1920 it was the site of a bomb blast believed to be caused by ‘anarchists’. No one was ever arrested.

Bank of New York - 1 Wall Street. This Art Deco building was constructed between 1929-32 for the Irving Trust Co.

Bankers Trust Company - 14 Wall Street.  Erected in 1912, the stepped pyramid at the top is so iconic that Bankers Trust adopted it as the company logo.

68 Wall Street - Site of the 1792 creation of the Buttonwood Agreement, a precursor to the New York Stock Exchange.

Read more about these sites from our self-guided tour of Wall Street .

T HINGS TO DO NEARBY

9/11 memorial  .

One of the most significant memorials in NYC, the 9/11 Memorial is just a 10-minute walk from Wall Street and well worth seeing. The Memorial is free to visit.

The views from the observatory atop this 1,776-foot (541 m) skyscraper are jaw-dropping.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 🅴🅻🅴🅽🅰︎ (@elena_roche_leon)

It is one of the three observatories you can visit in NYC, the other two being the Empire State Building and Top of The Rock .

Consider going to the Freedom Tower before or after your trip to Wall Street.

National September 11 Museum

The Museum is next to the Memorial and is an excellent collection of artifacts from the events of September 11, 2001.

There is an entry fee but on Tuesday nights they offer free admission . See our post on free museums in NYC .

Charging Bull

This 7,000 lb. (3175 kg) bronze bull statue was ‘dropped off’ at the New York Stock Exchange on December 15, 1989.

Like the “Fearless Girl” statue listed above, this sculpture was an illegal piece of art placed on an NYC sidewalk.

The culprit was an Italian sculptor Arturo DiModica.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by デジタルけんさん (@digital_quemsun)

He created the sculpture and left it by the NYSE as a sign of encouragement that the American economy could fight the recent recession.

The Bull was so loved by the workers in the Financial District that the city decided to allow the Bull to stay.

Drop by to take your picture with one of the most photographed sculptures in NYC.

Erected in 1811, New York’s City Hall is the country’s oldest city hall still used for its original purpose: housing local government.

You can take a free tour of the impressive building and see many historic works of art and original furnishings. Find out about tours here .

Battery Park

This large park at the tip of Manhattan has incredible views of the New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty.

This is also where the ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island depart from.

You can also catch the free Staten Island Ferry just a block away from Battery Park.

South Street Seaport

This is a historic district at the eastern end of Wall Street. Its cobblestone streets and restored 19th-century two-story buildings are charming.

There is also a small museum which is well-suited for children. See our post on things to do with kids in NYC for more ideas.

Brooklyn Bridge

Walking across this historic and beautiful bridge is one of the top 10 things to do for free in NYC.

You can walk the bridge on your own, or join one of our pay-what-you-wish guided tours .

No matter what you decide, the Brooklyn Bridge is a must-see sight!

PLACES TO EAT

Fraunces tavern pub and restaurant.

Within walking distance of Wall Street, this restaurant is beneath the landmark Fraunces Tavern Museum.

Just prior to the American Revolution, this pub served as a low-profile meeting place for revolutionaries.

At a dinner here in 1789, General George Washington bid farewell to his officers as he left the military to become America’s first president.

Here's our guide Renee discussing the tavern on our Lower Manhattan tour.

Stone Street Restaurants

A few blocks south of Wall Street is this lovely pedestrian mall with restaurants that have outdoor dining in good weather.

South Street Seaport Restaurants

At the east end of Wall Street is the Southstreet Seaport which has many options for dining.

Try the Cowgirl Seahorse, casual Mexican, Ambrose Beer for a beer and a lobster roll, or the Paris Cafe, one of NYC’s oldest pubs (1873).

The Oculus at the World Trade Center

You can find many familiar food shops, like Shake Shack, Pret a Manger, Starbucks, and more as well as semi-upscale cuisines like Eataly and Epicerie Boulud.

Brookfield Place Restaurants

Located about a 15-minute walk from Wall Street, west of the World Trade Center, you can find the wonderful Hudson Eats Food Hall with 14 restaurants including Blue Ribbon Sushi, Chop’t, Dos Toros Taqueria, and more.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

We hope that this post provided you with enough information about visiting Wall Street and the nearby attractions to make your time there enjoyable.

We think these tips from members of our New York Travel Tips group on Facebook will come in handy.

With so much to do in New York City, you may have a jam-packed schedule. If you plan to see Wall Street and the nearby attractions, you will probably want to give yourself a few hours.

Here one group member notes that adding in special activities, like the free Staten Island Ferry or One World Observatory , will take a big bite out of your day.

wall street nyc tour

The Charging Bull written about above is one of the most popular attractions in Lower Manhattan. There can be lines to get a photo in front of it.

Wisely, the members suggest getting there early.

wall street nyc tour

One tip is that if you are in a rush and have a sense of humor, you can pose next to the bull’s rear. There is a line, but not nearly as long as it is with the front of the bull!

As for the Fearless Girl statue, she is much smaller than the bull so she’s not as easy to spot. Follow these members' advice to find her.

wall street nyc tour

Most people who tour Wall Street pose with George Washington in front of Federal Hall National Memorial but don't take the time to go in. That’s a mistake according to this member.

wall street nyc tour

If you have the time, head to the South Street Seaport, at the eastern end of Wall Street for charming streets and amazing views of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Lastly, you might want to consider staying at a hotel in the Financial District where Wall Street is located. It may not have the glamour of Times Square, but it has other nice perks.

This group member has stayed there three times and here's why:

What You'll See

Welcome fidi.

Your tour of Wall Street and Manhattan's financial district begins at the edge of Battery Park. From here, you'll really get to know the ins and outs of the city's beating heart, from the revolutionary history if this neighborhood to the development of the modern day Wall Street powerhouses.

Fraunces Tavern

This tavern is absolutely loaded with history. It's here that many of America's Founding Fathers met to discuss the coming revolution as the British crown continued to squeeze the colonies. Today, in addition to still operating as a restaurant, the tavern hosts a museum on its upper floors that's definitely worth a stop for any history buff.

Dead Rabbit

This strangely named Irish bar was named the best bar in the world two years running. In addition to being a great spot for a drink, it also highlights the important history of Irish immigrants in New York City.

This unusual landmark contains fragments of old New York, with some even dating back to the days when it was called New Amsterdam! It's a bit like getting a glimpse back in time.

National Museum of American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian is a branch of the esteemed Smithsonian Institute. It features a staggering 800,000 artifacts, ranging from South American gold coins to Inuit whalebone carvings from the Arctic. Anyone interested in anthropology simply must stop here.

Alexander Hamilton Custom House

Now a museum, this surprisingly lavish Custom House is an indicator of Manhattan's rising prominence on the global financial scene during the late 1800s and early 1900s. It gets its name, of course, from Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, the same one now immortalized in the hit Broadway musical.

Museum Statues & Bowling Green

Across from Bowling Green, New York City’s oldest park, you'll find a collection of statues with a long, and sometimes peculiar, history. The land, however, has a much longer history of human habitation, which you'll learn about here.

Charging Bull

Sculpted in 1989 by Arturo Di Modica, the Charging Bull sculpture is Wall Street's most famous statue, but did you know it was initially placed here illegally? You'll get the full story, as well as the various controversies while admiring this impressive bit of public art.

Fearless Girl

Part symbol of empowerment, part marketing ploy by an asset management company, the Fearless Girl sculpture is a popular new addition to Wall Street's public art. It was once placed directly opposite the Charging Bull, but has since been moved to a permanent place outside the New York Stock Exchange.

Trinity Church

This church dates back over 300 years, but not in its current form. The first two structures were heavily damaged and needed to be rebuilt. The current church was constructed to withstand the test of time, and so far it has passed that test with flying colors.

New York Stock Exchange

The heart of American finance and the world's largest stock exchange by far. About $170 billion pass through this exchange every weekday, but it has surprisingly humble beginnings.

Federal Hall

Behind the impressive pillars of this hall, the American government was born. This is where George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States. It's also where the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were ratified.

40 Wall Street The Trump Building

Currently owned by Donald Trump, this towering structure has been host to numerous scandals over the years. As you admire its gleaming exterior, you'll learn all about the sometimes outlandish schemes and legal troubles of more than a few of the tower's corporate tenants.

Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve is definitely an imposing building from the outside, but what's even more impressive is what's within. This reserve holds around 497,000 gold bars in its vault! Visitors can take guided tours of the vault on weekdays with a reservation.

Liberty Tower and Chamber of Commerce

Liberty Tower has seen all kinds of interesting tenants. Franklin D. Roosevelt set up shop here before he became president, as did a crew of German spies during World War I!

This huge sculpture is exactly what it sounds like. According to the sculptor, "The cube signifies chance, like the rolling of dice." It's quite a sight up close!

Zuccotti Park and 117 Broadway

Zuccotti Park served as the heart of the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011. Protestors tried to maintain a constant presence here as the demonstrations continued day after day. Here, you'll get to revisit that turbulent time and uncover the reasons behind it all.

World Trade Center Memorial

A somber, essential memorial. The 9/11 Memorial honors the 2,977 men, women, and children killed when two hijacked airliners flew into the World Trade Center buildings in 2001.

One World Trade Center

One World Trade Center stands at nearly 1,800 feet, making it the tallest building in the nation. When it was built, this was the most expensive building ever constructed, and it shows. This gleaming symbol of American ambition is a can't-miss landmark.

A bizarre, one-of-a-kind train station that functions not just as a transit hub but also as a shopping destination. The Oculus is also a great sightseeing spot, and makes for some truly excellent photo ops.

St. Paul's Chapel

Built in 1766, this is the oldest surviving chapel in Manhattan. It was also frequented by George Washington himself! After the attacks on 9/11, this chapel became a round-the-clock relief center for first responders.

The Woolworth Building

This striking neo-gothic tower was one of America's very first skyscrapers. It was also the tallest building in the world until 1930.

City Hall Park

This historic park once served as a sort of town commons for the city. During the leadup to the American Revolution, New Yorkers gathered here to protest British overreach. It's also the spot where George Washington read the Declaration of Independence to a crowd!

New York City Hall

New York City Hall is one of the oldest and most photogenic city halls in the country. It was designed by an American and a French architect and combines the two nations' distinctive styles in a totally unique way.

Tweed Courthouse

No expense was spared in the construction of this gorgeous courthouse... even when it should have been. Here, you'll get the full story on the corruption scandal behind this picturesque structure.

Brooklyn Bridge & Conclusion

Dating back to 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge is an essential New York landmark you'll definitely want to photograph. Your tour concludes here.

NYC: Wall Street & Financial District Guide

Sean Finelli Last Updated: November 14, 2022

“Wall Street” is an iconic street name not only limited to the realm of business and finance. It has great historical significance attached to it and is one of the most compelling parts of New York City, located within its Financial District. Recognized as a core component of the international financial system, Wall Street is home to a myriad of banks, firms, and most notably the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Here’s our guide to this iconic part of New York’s identity!

You may be wondering where the name derives from. Interestingly enough “Wall Street” was named after a wall that was built in New York during the 17th century as a form of protection from outsiders, as it was still a Dutch Colony.

If you want to learn more about the intriguing history and important global status of this New York City region, then consider planning a trip and keep reading to learn about some of the best tips that’ll ensure a simple preparation process!

When to Visit

You’ve decided that you want to visit New York’s Financial District, so one of the first steps when it comes to setting that plan into motion is deciding when to visit! New York is always bustling and exciting to explore, after all, it holds the title of “The City That Never Sleeps”.

If you’re interested in visiting while it’s warm out then travelling between the months of May and August is best, however, if you’re more interested in catching a glimpse of the seasonal and holiday flair then September-January is fitting for you (as long as you have enough winter attire).

wall street nyc tour

When it comes to specifically seeing Wall Street and The Financial District, it’s important to note that the district is most active during the working week between Monday and Friday. The NYSE is closed for business on weekends, therefore if you’re interested in observing the bustling atmosphere and  flow of this area while in operation visiting during the week is best.

However, if you simply want to see the architecture, monuments, and exterior of the businesses residing in the region then the weekends are also a great time to kick off your adventure.

How to Get There

There’s plenty of transportation options that can be utilized for travel to the Financial District. Located in Lower Manhattan, this region is incredibly accessible by both public and private modes of transportation. If you’re considering the public option then plan on purchasing a MetroCard, which will provide you with access to the subway and bus systems at an affordable price point.

For the subway Lines 2, 3, 4, and 5 can be taken directly to Wall Street from several departure points around the city. The M55, M15, and M22 buses can also be taken to get there. Check the MTA Website for specific route details and options, setting the destination as Wall Street and your relevant departure point.

Hop-on-hop-off bus tours are another great option, especially if you’re visiting other parts of the city during the day. The Financial District is typically one of the main stops on those tours, which can be purchased online from a variety of service companies.

Private transportation, taxis, and ride sharing services are other available options, however, they aren’t the most practical as traffic can be very congested especially around Wall Street & The Financial District. If you choose to use one of these methods, just keep in mind that your arrival time may be longer.

Top Sites & Essential Tips

Charging Bull

The Charging Bull is a popular symbol associated with Wall Street and the United State’s Stock Market. Often referred to as “the Wall Street Bull”, it was designed by artist Arturo Di Modica in 1989 as an artistic response to the 1987 stock market crash.

wall street nyc tour

Located in Bowling Green, this bronzed monument attracts large numbers of New York City visitors and it’s standard tradition to take a picture by the bull. Expect a crowd in the area, as other tourists have the same idea in mind. The Charging Bull is a must see site along your journey through the Financial District.

One World Trade Center

The tallest building in the United States and the seventh tallest in the World, One World Trade Center was rebuilt after the original World Trade Center and can be found at 285 Fulton Street. Admiring this 1,792 ft architectural marvel is essential not only for it’s amazing exterior but also for its significance to New York City and the global prominence that it maintains.

The One World Observatory located atop the building is one of it’s highlights and a main tourist attraction. If you’re interested in getting a look inside at the businesses, restaurants, and informational guides including an astounding view of the city, then purchasing tickets in advance is a great idea. You’ll be able to tell people you stood atop the tallest skyscraper in the nation – not much can top that!

“This tower stands as proof, despite all the troubles and evil in the world, it is proof of what human beings are capable of. “ – Kai Ryssdal, NYC Writer

9/11 Memorial & Museum

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial is an insightful experience, allowing visitors to pay their respects to those impacted by the tragedy while also learning more about the history and amazing people that contributed their help and services.

The museum can be found near the memorial and tickets can be purchased online for entry, which is recommended as it contains several informative exhibits that emphasize the strength and resilience of the city even through devastating times.

“When you go down to the Financial District, you get the sense of why NYC is considered the center of so much, because so much happens here” – Kelsea Weinstein, NYC Local

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

The New York Stock Exchange is globally recognized as the largest stock exchange. Stopping by this prominent building is a necessity while exploring FiDi as it’s one of the major highlights and focal points of this district. Although entry is no longer permitted for visitors you can still obtain a great view of the outside of the building and the surrounding environment.

wall street nyc tour

Other alternatives include virtual tours provided by various sites online. Whether or not you choose to partake in a virtual tour, seeing the building whose operations are at the core of global finance is impressive, nonetheless.

Federal Hall National Memorial

Originally constructed in 1703, where the Federal Hall National Memorial stands today was once New York’s first City Hall. Now this national memorial is open to the public and includes a small yet very informational museum – with free entry!

Residing at 26 Wall Street, the memorial provides visitors with an exciting opportunity to expand their knowledge of some of the nation’s most significant history. Did you know that the nation’s first president, George Washington was inaugurated there in 1789? Find out more interesting facts about the site’s current and historical relevance when you visit.

Trinity Church

Trinity Church is widely known for its architectural beauty and deep historical ties to the city. Currently home to an Episcopal Parish, this gem can be found at the corner of Wall and Broad Street and is open to the public. Upon entry you’ll be captivated by the grand architecture and beautiful stained glass that has remained there for more than 200 years.

Keep in mind that you have to maintain respectful quietness when visiting as active services may be going on. You can check the website to determine when the most suitable time for visitation and tours are.

And that’s our guide to the Financial District. If you’re planning your next trip to the Big Apple, we highly recommend our tours of the Statue of Liberty and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We’ll see you there!

11 Things To Do on Wall Street: As Told by a New Yorker

11 Things To Do on Wall Street: As Told by a New Yorker

Wall Street. So many things come to mind when you hear those words. After Broadway , it’s the most famous street in NYC. And like Broadway, people tend to only associate it with one thing, money.

While money is certainly influential to Wall Street, there are so many other things that make the Financial District special — history, architecture, good food. These are all things you can easily find.

As a local, it’s one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city. Mostly because there is so much to do. In this post, I’ll share the best things to do on Wall Street and hopefully inspire you to see them for yourself.

1. The New York Stock Exchange

New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street

The New York Stock Exchange is one of New York’s most influential buildings. Sitting right at the corner of Broad and Wall Street, this historical site is even more impressive when you see it in person. When you think of classic things to do on Wall Street, this place is one of the first to come to mind.

Although you can’t go inside anymore, there are still plenty of ways to experience the stock exchange. Take some photos with the landmark facade or get there early and listen for the opening bell, rung at 9:30 a.m. every weekday.

2. The Charging Bull

Wall Street Charging Bull

Nothing symbolizes Wall Street quite so much as the Charging Bull .

This 7,000-pound, bronze sculpture was a gift to New Yorkers from Italian artist Arturo Di Modica. It was originally placed in front of the New York Stock Exchange but, due to some sensitivity issues, it was decided that the sculpture should be moved to Broadway.

Every year, thousands of people line up to get their photo taken with the bull, some going so far as to rub it for good luck .

3. Learn about the 2008 financial crisis

Tour of Wall Street

If you’d like to know more about Wall Street from the people who worked and lived it, check out our highly acclaimed Financial Crisis Tour . This in-depth look at the 2008 financial crisis gives detailed explanation as to how the collapse unfolded and almost destroyed the economy.

It’s a great activity for those who are interested in Wall Street but aren’t quite sure how influential and important it is to our daily lives.

4. Battery Park

New York Harbor

Just a few minutes walk from Wall Street is Battery Park, the southernmost point of Manhattan. The park is home to an original sandstone war fort, Castle Clinton, and a great view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The best time to visit is during sunset, for beautiful pictures of Lady Liberty and New York harbor.

Guide tip: You can also catch the free Staten Island ferry here if you want to see a better view of the statue.

5. Trinity Church

Trinity Church

Trinity Church was originally built in 1848, making it one of the oldest churches in the city. The unique brownstone exterior stands out from the other skyscrapers downtown, while the churchyard is home to many notable New Yorkers, including the one and only Alexander Hamilton.

Head inside to see the newly installed pipe organ and beautiful stained glass windows.

6. Stone Street

Stone Street NYC

All that walking making you hungry?

Lucky for you, just a couple minutes south of Wall Street is Stone Street — a small block full of Dutch revival architecture and delicious eateries.

This is one of the best things to do near Wall Street. Stroll through history and decide what you’re in the mood for as you walk along New York’s first paved roadway. There’s Italian, Barbecue, Mexican, you name it!

Guide tip: For the history buffs, stop by Fraunces Tavern and dine in the footsteps of our founding fathers.

7. Take a tour

Tour of Wall street

By now you might be asking yourself, with all the things to do on Wall Street, how can I make time to see them all? Not to worry. Join us any day of the week for our Lower Manhattan walking tour .

This two-hour tour takes you to many of the sites on this list, with plenty of extra history and tips included along the way. Our expert guides will make sure you see all the best sites of the Financial District as efficiently as possible.

8. The 9/11 Memorial

9/11 Memorial NYC

Built in the footprint of the original Twin Towers is the National September 11th Memorial . The open air plaza beautifully pays tribute to the thousands of men, women, and first responders who tragically lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Admission to the memorial is free and includes access to the memorial pools, with the names of each victim engraved around the perimeter. You’ll also get to see the famous Survivor Tree and original WTC sphere .

9. The Oculus

The Oculus

Right next door to the memorial is one of New York’s newer buildings — the Oculus . It’s a very unique and somewhat eccentric-looking transportation hub, with wings jutting out from either side to resemble a flying dove. The inside is covered in pure white Italian marble and lined with shops from front to back.

Guide tip: This is a great place to spend an afternoon if it happens to be a cold or rainy day! Or even just to take a break from sightseeing and do some shopping.

10. Federal Hall

Federal Hall Rotunda

Of all the things to do on Wall Street, visiting Federal Hall is my personal favorite.

Home to George Washington’s presidential inauguration and the first draft of the Bill of Rights, this building has seen more history than almost any other in the Financial District.

Today, it operates Monday through Friday as a free museum, dedicated to preserving the history of Washington’s inauguration and its former role as a United States sub-treasury.

11. South Street Seaport

South Street seaport

Right on the edge of the Financial District neighborhood is the South Street Seaport , an active, little area that’s been slowly rebuilding itself after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

Visitors to the seaport can enjoy live music, stop by the Fulton farmer’s market for a quick bite, or learn some history at the South Street Seaport museum. It’s only a 15-minute walk from the stock exchange, and a great excuse to relax by the water and enjoy some (hopefully) nice weather.

Wall Street: Not just for tourists and executives

Wall Street NYC

While I will confess that, as a local, I often avoid Times Square and the masses of tourists it draws, I could never say the same for Wall Street.

The amount of history and significance in one neighborhood is unparalleled throughout the rest of the city. Yes, there are tourists and businessmen that flood the area every day, but there are so many things worth seeing that it really is a must when you’re visiting New York.

Hopefully, this list of things to do on Wall Street gave you some ideas for what to see and do next time you’re in the Financial District — you don’t want to miss it!
