Wacky Tacky Light Tour Returning To Birmingham
Fresh air family brings the holiday cheer for a great cause..
The Wacky Tacky Light Tour is returning to Birmingham on December 13, 15, 20, and 22! The Birmingham holiday favorite is known for its thousands of lights, gravity-defying displays, and blow-ups! The good people behind Fresh Air Family , a 501(c)3 that provides hundreds of fun and educational outdoor excursions for families in Alabama, are back on the mission of finding the best, worst and wackiest light displays in town on a two-hour guided bus ride.
The tour, which starts at Cahaba Brewing and has a midpoint with the opportunity for refreshments in Homewood, encourages attendees to dress up and prepare for a wonderful night with family and friends on the season’s best joy ride. Rides will leave every 15 minutes, at 6, 6:15, 6:30, 6:45, 7, 7:15, and 7:30. Reservations are required, and prices are $45 for tickets and prices vary for private buses. While the lights are sure to be wildly entertaining the best part is that the fun is for a good cause: this fundraiser for Fresh Air Family provided $25,000 in financial aid to summer campers in the Summer of 2022 who could not have otherwise attended Gross Out Day , an award-winning science camp.
The tour bills itself as “the anti-Norman Rockwell event” and features homes that go over the top to decorate for the holidays. The tour includes Santa’s Trailer Park, the Hanukkah House, Dueling Neighbors, Star Wars Christmas, and new houses: Saddle Up Santa and Xmas on a Limb. The tour is curated to light up the night with fun and festivity. “I personally curate the route. My standards are low, and hard to meet,” said Verna Gates, the original wacky tackier, and Founder and Executive Director of Fresh Air Family.

For the seniors, it’s the laughter of children on the lawn. For the children, it’s the wonder of experiencing what it might be like to have a granddad or grandmother. With a new partnership between Fair Haven and Fresh Air Family, these two natural allies will come together to learn about fishing, tadpoles, salamanders, snakes, and crafts, along with wisdom, caring and the joys of childhood.
Fresh Air Family and Fair Haven are working together to bridge the generations at summer camps and special events, starting with the Wacky Tacky Light Tour, a fundraiser for Fresh Air Family’s award-winning Gross Out Camp. The light tour runs Dec. 9, 10, 11 and 12, with buses leaving from Golden Age Wine in Mountain Brook every ten minutes between 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.WackyTacky.org . Fair Haven is serving as the mid-point stop for refreshments.
The Wacky Tacky Light Tour focuses on over-the-top holiday lights for a two-hour tour. Claiming the best of the worst of Birmingham’s holiday lights, decorated houses include: Dueling Neighbors, the Hanukkah House, Singing Trees, Santa’s Trailer Park, Giant Mooning Santa, Toomer’s Corner in Lights, Grandma being run over by a reindeer, and nothing says Christmas like Darth Vader.
“I personally curate the route and my standards are really low, and hard to meet,” jokes Verna Gates, Executive Director of Fresh Air Family and creator of the Wacky Tacky Light Tour.
Last year, the light tour raised enough money to help 214 underserved children attend Gross Out Camp for free. Gross Out Camp (it’s science but please don’t tell the kids) features hands-on field biology. Student campers will join senior residents at Fair Haven each camp day for activities such as nature crafts and ice cream making. Senior volunteers will help campers with daily activities such as fishing and journaling.
“One of our goals is intergenerational activities and we believe both the kids and the seniors will enjoy learning together,” said Liz Prosch, Vice President of Quality and Mission Integration, Methodist Homes.

Drive-Through Holiday Light Display FAQ
![wacky tacky light tour birmingham al Toy car with Christmas tree on top sits in front of blurred Christmas lights](https://www.drivinggeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/drive-through-FAQ.jpg)
When do Christmas drive-through light shows start each season?
Drive-through holiday lights shows start on different dates.
Many are open by mid-November, but some wait until just after Thanksgiving.
But you can certainly expect them to be open by December 1st.
How long do Christmas drive-through light shows go on?
Nearly all holiday drive-through light shows last through at least New Year’s Day.
But many stay up a little longer, through Epiphany (January 6 th ) or roughly the first week of January.
How long does it take to drive through a holiday light show?
While it’s highly dependent on the light show, you can get through most drive-through holiday light displays in less than an hour.
For more extensive shows that cover more acres, it might take a little longer, but you’ll almost certainly be through in less than two hours.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t include your waiting time to get in, which can add just a few minutes or hours onto your visit, depending on how popular and how well-organized the show is.
When is the best time to go to a drive-thru light show?
For light shows that are up by mid-November, the earlier in the season you go, the less busy they’ll be.
Drive-through holiday lights get more and more popular starting right after Thanksgiving through the week of Christmas/New Year’s.
If it’s a light show that stays open the first week of January, you can catch a bit of a break from the crowds in that final week too.
As for times, right after they open (right after sunset, typically) or in the last hour of operation are the best times of day. (Though, that last hour can get sketchy if the cars before you have gotten backed up throughout the night.)
![](http://mcmachinetools.online/777/templates/cheerup/res/banner1.gif)
How much do drive-thru light shows cost?
Drive-through holiday light displays might charge by the car or by the person.
Depending on how many people you have in your party, either of these might be the better deal.
While prices vary considerably, generally speaking you can expect to pay at least $20/car at most for-profit drive-through light shows.
What should I know about driving through a drive-through light show?
When it comes to drive-through light shows, the lights are the main attraction and the driving is kind of a side note for most.
Which is how drive-through light shows can end up so irritating.
People get boggled by the pretty lights and forget they are also on a road with other vehicles.
So, here are a few tips to help you not be that driver.
1 – Keep moving.
It might be tempting to stop and look at the pretty lights along the route.
But if you want to do stop completely, you should go to a walk-through display instead.
If you stop, everyone behind you also has to stop and the whole system backs up.
So, go the low speed limit provided by the light show and get your looks in while moving.
2 – Go the speed limit.
The people who design the light show provide a speed limit for a reason.
This speed limit is meant to keep everyone moving forward at a reasonable pace, while providing plenty of time to take in the light displays from the comfort of your vehicle.
If you heed this speed limit, and everyone else heeds it, it’s amazing how easily you’ll all keep rolling along.
If you don’t heed it, and no one else does either, it’s amazing how easily you’ll end up in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
3 – Leave space.
Speaking of bumper-to-bumper traffic, try not to be the cause.
If you start creeping up on the car in front of you, back off.
By keeping an assured distance, you can avoid a potential fender bender and help keep everyone in the holiday spirit.
4 – Check your headlights. (And turn them off if you can!)
Many drive-through light displays cast enough light onto the road that you won’t need your headlights.
Or at least not all the time.
If you can drive safely without them, it’s best to turn them off and cut down on light pollution along the route.
This makes it easier for those in the cars around you (especially in front of you) to see.
If you can’t drive safely without your headlights, keep them on low and leave even more space from the car in front of you.
Its passengers want to see the lights too!
5 – Get your seasonal road tunes on.
Many drive-through holiday light displays have their own radio stations, outfitted with songs they think go best with their displays.
So, make sure to check the official website for your particular show.
And if your show doesn’t have its own music, make sure you build that playlist before you go!

Here are the city’s best places to see holiday light displays
- Published: Dec. 03, 2018, 1:43 p.m.

Though colder weather promises dark evenings and long nights, the city lights up during the holidays with tens of thousands of lights, sparkling from downtown to the city suburbs. With parades perfect for family outings and light tours that promise everything from tacky displays to African safari adventures, Birmingham sure knows how to get into the holiday spirit.

Wacky Lights, Tacky Sweaters
The city’s annual Wacky Tacky light tour, sponsored by Fresh Air Family, promises enough holiday lights to be seen from the moon, and they never disappoint. Don your tackiest Christmas sweater and lighted headgear, and take the two-hour bus tour around town to see Birmingham’s best over-the-top, gravity-defying, and often humorous light displays. Grab tickets at wackytacky.org , or reserve a bus for your company holiday party, church group, or community club.
Digitized Christmas
Viewable even from the sky as planes descend into Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, the massive illuminated Christmas tree on the side of the downtown Regions Center building is one of the city’s most memorable holiday attractions. When the building was built in the late 1960s and early ’70s, each window was fitted with a small light tube. Now, building teams work for months each year to manually install gel tubes that transform the lighted windows into a bright Christmas tree on two sides of the building each holiday season. The other two sides of the building feature a stocking and wreath.
Star Light, Star Bright
Join one of Birmingham’s quaintest neighborhoods for its annual Christmas parade, which winds through downtown Homewood. The traditional Homewood Star on 18th Street, decorated with gold garland and a combination of strings of twinkling lights and more than a thousand large bulbs, will be lit at the beginning of the festivities. The event also includes the opportunity for parade-goers to catch candy thrown from floats, hear music from the Homewood High School band, visit with Santa, and watch as Homewood City Hall’s Christmas tree lights up for the holidays. Visit homewoodparks.com for more information.

15-nights of a half-million lights await visitors to the Birmingham Zoo's annual Zoolight Safari. The holiday event features colorful lighted displays, holiday crafts, carolers, wildlife shows, train rides, games, story time and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus nightly. Photo by Jeff Roberts. bn
The Birmingham Zoo comes alive for more than two weeks each holiday season with over one million lights and a 30-foot tall tree in the zoo’s Trails of Africa exhibit, complete with artificial snowfalls each night of the Safari. Kids will love taking a ride on the Candy Cane Train or a spin on the Jingle Bell Carousel, and adults can sip on cocktails for purchase while enjoying special entertainment acts each night of ZooLight Safari. Members get free admission, and nonmembers can grab tickets and see a full schedule of events at birminghamzoo.com .
Downtown Lights
Attend the annual Birmingham Christmas tree lighting in Linn Park, the anchor of municipal downtown, and celebrate a tradition started in 1947 by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Thousands of glittering lights, live music, arts and crafts—and maybe even an early visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus—means fun for both friends and family.
Village Traditions
Every year since 2006, hundreds of locals have gathered at Bromberg’s in Mountain Brook Village for the community’s annual Christmas tree lighting, kept simple but stunning with thousands of colored lights and a single illuminated star on top. Mountain Brook also hosts a parade, where the Mountain Brook High School band and other live music acts perform. Kids—and adults, too!—can leave a letter for Santa Claus and catch candy tossed by parade participants.
