What Travel Trailers to Avoid for Full-Time Living and Why

Here are the campers to avoid for live in full-time.

Alpha Wolf Floor plans are not recommended for full-time living but are great for traveling.

Although the Cherokee Alpha Wolf line offers excellent value for the price, they are spacious, well-finished, and often our recommended floor plans. In this case, we believe they are not the Forest River floor plans we would recommend for families with children who choose to live full-time in a travel trailer. 

Certain features are recommended for full-time living in a travel trailer; an entertainment center in the bunkhouse is essential and gives parents significant advantages in separating activities and privacy. Also, we mentioned earlier how important it is for the booth dinette to provide the right size for the number of people in the RV.

For example, the 2023 Cherokee Alpha Wolf 30RDB-L has two bunk beds in a bunk room. However, no entertainment center is located inside the bunk room. The Alpha Wolf 30DBH-L has the same issue. So, you will need to jump to the floor plan of Alpha Wolf 33BH-L, which includes the entertainment center appreciated when living full-time in a travel trailer with kids. However, in this model, the dinette is short-sized for only four people.

Don’t get me wrong. Alpha Wolf travel trailers are great for vacation. They are a good choice in other circumstances but not recommended for full-time living.

According to owners, Winnebago Travel Trailers are not recommended for full-time living.

It is expensive, common, and without any of the features necessary for comfortable RV living. Many RVers may have decided on this camper to establish their full-time lifestyle. But if you have the budget, go for other models and floor plans that offer what will be a priority for camper living.

It is impossible to prepare anything other than a simple meal because the lack of space is appalling. The absence of slides-out worsens the circulation, and we are lucky to be slim. Otherwise, using the shower or even sharing the circulation in a corridor is complicated.

Motorhomes are some of the most popular options for four season travelers and campers who want to get out despite the winter snows. They come in various classes and sizes.

Class A motorhomes are the largest of these models. Some have significant special features to keep you traveling and camping in the lap of luxury.

In some states, you need a special license endorsement to operate these behemoths of the road. So, make sure to include that in your shopping research.

Class B and C motorhomes tend to be smaller. Some can be as small as a camper van or a panel van conversion. Yet there are others that are large enough to rub shoulders with a Class A motorhome.

Four Season Fifth Wheel Campers

If you have a heavy-duty three-quarter ton or one-ton pickup truck, you might be in the market for a four season fifth wheel camper.

This large trailer is attached to a special gooseneck hitch mounted into the cargo box of the truck.

In northern-tier states and parts of Canada, you can also find pre-owned models, that were originally designed to serve as a summer camper trailer, that someone converted themselves to handle winter conditions.

Though for our purposes here we’ll look at relatively newer models with manufacturer’s specs.

In this segment also resides so-called “Fish House” campers. Niche manufacturers in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, and Southern Canada produce units that are designed to cater to ice fishermen with families.

The philosophy behind these units is often described as “You can use a fish house to camp, but you can’t use a camper to ice fish.”

While they do appeal to a certain segment these units are also designed to be stout and warm in even the most severe of winter, off-the-grid conditions.

The one thing to bear in mind with these campers is that they generally don’t come with any type of air conditioning. Though some can be used to handle an RV window air conditioning unit.

Right off the bat, there are a few common questions you might want to keep in mind while you explore your four season RV options.

Important Materials And Construction Features To Look For In A Four-Season RV

A good forced air furnace or air conditioner is just the tip of the ice berg to look for when shopping for a four-season travel trailer or RV camper.

When we’re looking to buy a 4 season RV Things like insulation, windows, wind-proofing, waterproofing, hatch covers, pipe insulation, tank insulation, window qualities and even electronic braking system can all come into play.

This includes things like:

• RV insulation in walls, ceiling, and floor
• Underbelly insulation of tanks and pipes
• Window glass characteristics and structure
• The BTUs of a roof mounted air conditioner
• The ability to safely hold a window mounted air conditioner
• The plumbing features
• The size and features of the water tanks
• The BTUs of the furnace
• An electronic trailer braking system

How Important Is RV Insulation?

The effectiveness and overall efficiency of an RV air conditioning or heating system will be greatly affected by the quality of insulation in the walls as well as the ceiling.

Different manufacturers use different insulation strategies in their RVs . At the same time, newer models are more likely to have more thermally efficient materials.

Even if your RV doesn’t come with skirting, you can still choose to build it yourself or buy it online.

Sourcing it through an online retailer tends to cost more per square foot for the materials.

Still, you have to weigh this against the value of the time it would take you to build it yourself.

You see as water freezes it gradually starts to expand. Even though it becomes solid ice at 32-degrees a minor amount of molecular expansion starts to occur at 39 degrees.

Once water enters its “Transition Phase” it can start to turn into slush, which can clog lines or hamper water pumps.

Left unchecked it could crack water lines, damage water pumps, clog freshwater and gray water tanks, or lead to other unforeseeable catastrophes.

An insulated underbelly is your best defense against these problems. Ideally, you want to look for a four-season RV that comes with an already insulated underbelly.

If not, there are things you can do to have one installed. Some dealers will even offer it as an upgraded service or can point you in the direction of a spray foam installer who can apply one for a modest fee.

What Types Of RV Windows Improve Thermal Efficiency?

Twenty or thirty years ago RV windows were pretty barebones. Many were little more than a single pane of glass or a flimsy sheet of plexiglass. ‘

If you were lucky a few of them would crank open for a little added airflow in the summer.

Some were just single panes of glass into vinyl tracks and you had to live with whatever breeze you could get.

Today, modern RV windows can potentially rival the windows you find in a home. Though you will most often find them trending on the cheaper side.

Just like the walls, the glass of a window and the seals can greatly impact thermal efficiency. Be prepared to be underwhelmed by some of the options you find on the marketplace.

There are a few different window options that you should keep an eye out for.

Double Pane, Thermal Glass or Argon Windows

These are common terms that you might see an Four Season RV manufacturer use to describe a window with two sheets of glass separated by a special gas like argon.

The exterior glass buffers against the cold or heat outside and one that helps to maintain the internal temperature.

Reducing the physical contact between the two panes reduces the heat transfer from interior to exterior.

If you have time to tour a showroom model, take a moment to look at the seals around the sills of the windows.

Are they hard plastic or vinyl, as vinyl tends to leak as they age. Also look for weather stripping to help maximize the seal potential. In the end, the best glass has little value if the seals around it leak.

Some type of window lock is also a bonus for safety, as well as minimizing leaks around the sealing edge of the sill. 

You might want to also prioritize an RV that has thick, or a reinforced window sill capable of holding a window air conditioner.

Many manufacturers are rushing these to market for people who want to stay where the temperatures can soar.

Just keep in mind that if you go this route, you will also need some type of onboard, or secondary generator to power the AC unit for more than a few minutes at a time. 

Does RV Roofing Matter?

The roof of an RV is just as important for a cold weather RV, if not more important than the walls. With some RV’s snow load can be a factor.

A major winter snowstorm can impact the structural integrity of an RV much the same way it can affect a house.

It might not necessarily mean that the snow will collapse the roof. Still, it could damage other things like the exterior air conditioning components, bathroom/plumbing vents, and hatch covers.

If possible, look for a travel that has things like “Heavy Duty” hatch covers, and vents.

Even if you fall in love with one that doesn’t, you might still be able to buy upgraded ones for relatively cheap.

A Tip For Dealing With Snow On An RV

Certain parts of North American like the front range of the Rocky Mountains or the Great Lakes Region, can drop enormous amounts of snow with little warning.

Keeping a roof rake of a push broom in the RV will allow you to clear snow that accumulates before you set off the next day.

Driving off with a major load of snow and ice could damage vents and hatch covers as the hard snow shears off with the wind.

What Size Air Conditioner Do I Need In A Four-Season RV?

Ideally, you want your RV’s overhead air conditioner to be able to handle the cooling duties of the main living area, without having to augment it with a motorhome’s dash AC.

Most modern-day RV air conditioners are set up to handle the basic living area without exceeding the capacity of the onboard electrical system.

If you’ve ever been on a trip in extremely hot humid conditions, you’ve noticed that your RV’s air conditioner will struggle from time to time.

Especially when it comes to the initial cool-down phase after traveling or being away all day.

Some RVs come with reinforced window sills that are specifically designed to hold a window AC unit.

Even if a unit you are interested in doesn’t have sills to accommodate one, there are braces and bracket accessories available that might be able to get the job done.

Four-Season RV Plumbing With Pex Piping

In the past copper tubing was the most common way to plumb an RV. As the price of copper started to soar worldwide, it was gradually replaced with more freeze-resistant PVC.

Today Pex piping is becoming even more popular due to its affordability and ease of installation. It also happens to have better freeze resistance than its predecessors.

Hot Water Heater Tank Capacity

If you are going to be staying off the grid, or there won’t be any open RV parks in the wintertime, you might want to also keep an eye on the size of the water heater tank.

The larger the tank the longer it will take for the insulated water inside to cool.

This allows you to fire up the generator in the morning to fill and warm the water in the tank, then go out for the day, trusting that you won’t come home to a lukewarm shower.

Does The Size Of The Water Tanks Matter?

If you feel reasonably confident that you can find an open RV parks in the wintertime, the size of fresh water and gray water tanks might not be a big deal.

However, if you are going to be Boondocking , off the grid, for a significant amount of time, such as using the RV for winter hunting trip, you might want to factor tank size and underbelly insulation.

As you might imagine, the larger the tank, the longer you can stay off the grid, or away from municipal services.

At the same time, smaller tanks are more likely to slush up. Even if the pipes and water lines are fully insulated the tank itself might be exposed to the cold air under the RV.

As time goes on the water can enter the “Transition Phase” where it turns to slush before freezing. This can lead to all manner of complications.

A larger tank with a relatively full volume is a greater heat sink and will take longer to enter the transition phase than a small or somewhat low tank.

If you are going to be Boondocking , you might want to prioritize a larger freshwater, gray water and black water tank.

What Size RV Furnace Do I Need?

For a four seasons RV under 32 feet, you should target something in the neighborhood of 30,000 BTUs.

This is usually sufficient for heating an internal space against temperatures that dip below freezing for a prolonged period of time.

A forced air propane furnace rated to produce 35,000 BTUs or more should be able to keep you toasty during times when even the day time temperature struggles to get over 32-degrees. Especially, if you have a high R-Value insulation and an insulated underbelly .

A all seasons RV with a smaller internal space of say 20 feet or less might be able to get by with a 20,000 BTU furnace.

Still, if you are going to go this low, you might want to keep some type of augmented heat onboard for times when an inclement stretch of severe cold strikes.

Do I Need An Electronic Braking System On A Four-Seasons RV?

In some states an electronic braking system is required for 4 seasons travel trailers over a certain weight or length.

So, make sure to check your states requirements. Most larger travel trailers and fifth-wheel campers will come with an electronic braking system built-in.

To use it, you will need a corresponding control unit installed in the tow vehicle. This is something that most RV dealerships can handle for you.

It will also require you to either connect the trailer to your tow vehicle’s onboard power or connect it to the RV’s onboard power.

The system is designed to apply special trailer brakes when you depress the tow vehicle’s brake pedal. This is incredibly helpful if you are going down grade on a hill or mountain during icy conditions.

How To Prepare Your RV for a Winter Adventure

The fresh water, gray water , and black water tanks are all vulnerable to freezing, as are the water and drain lines.

The fresh water tank and the accompanying water lines are the most vulnerable to freezing , or clogging up as the water cools into the slushy “Transition Phase.”

The gray water and black water tanks tend to have other things in them like soap and other waste products, which can potentially lower the freezing point down to around 28-degrees.

Your best, and possibly easiest option is to have closed sell foam insulation sprayed onto the tanks and pipes.

Some dealerships and even home insulation companies will offer this as a service for a small fee.

You could try to install pipe insulation sleeves and fiberglass sheeting under the RV. Just make sure it is thoroughly connected.

If some of it pulls loose while you are driving down the road it could cause a major headache.

Not to mention the highway patrol could level you with a major fine for debris road hazards!

Cover The Windows With Plastic

Just like you do with your home in winter, covering the windows with sheets of clear plastic will also improve their insulation value. It’s especially handy if your RV has single pane windows or the sills are leaky.

Use Protective Skirting

There are sheets of skirting you can buy online or in stores that are specifically meant for RV’s. You deploy it essentially create a temporary, insulated wall sealing the air gap under the RV.

If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you could build your own skirting from insulated panels and other construction materials.

Install A Wood Pellet Or Corn Burning Stove

These units are popular in Northwoods cabins. They run off a small amount of power that drives an internal auger, which delivers the corn or wood pellets to a small internal fire pot. A small fan then blows the heat out to the rest of the interior space.

Just bear in mind that RV wood stoves need a secondary chimney and other fireproofing safety requirements.

You might also want to double check your RV insurance policy. Some will void coverage if a non-propane furnace is installed.

Upgrade Hatch And Vent Covers

RVs that are designed for summertime travel tend to have hatch covers and vent covers that are made from thin plastic.

The weather stripping in these areas also tends to be rather poor. Upgrading to more sturdy covers, insulating existing covers, or upgrading the weather stripping will help hold hot air inside the RV.

There is a certain misconception shared by many that RV’s simply aren’t meant to handle the full brunt of all four seasons.

For many models, geared for the average family this is indeed true. Yet there are those out there who are intrepid enough to want to travel and adventure the wide world no matter what mother nature throws at them.

This niche of RV adventurer can take solace in knowing that today there are RV manufacturers who produce high-quality motorhomes, fifth-wheel trailers and travel trailer campers that can pull double duty as an ice house.

The 40LOFT floor plan, on the other hand, has an additional sleeping space.

If you are particular with the size of your bathroom, the 40FBTS floor plan should be your option as it occupies the entire width of the front of the trailer, considered the best bathroom in the series of this travel trailer.

Although there are different added space and features for the floor plans mentioned, the convenience of this travel trailer is at par with the other high-end trailer. With the bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom, you can almost feel that you are home.

Packed with all the basic and home like features this isn’t a cheap option. Its for those who want all the basic amenities in under 60K. You can also get a used one at less than $40,000, which by the way can be a great deal.

The dry weight of this camper trailer is slightly above 11,000 lbs which will need a bigger truck to pull it. Since this type of models are mostly built for less travel, be sure you know what you are getting into. Such park models are suited when you want to spend longer duration at a location and move when you are done.

The Winnebago Minnie Plus travel trailer has 6 floor plans where some may have bunk beds and primary queen beds while others have a kitchen area with kitchen islands and an option for an outdoor pull-out kitchen. Another floor plan is where there is a separate bedroom with a bunk inclusion in the rear.

You can choose which feature matter to you most if you are after a good sleep most of the time and just plain relaxing with not much cooking, then you can purchase the one with bigger bedroom space. If you are more of concocting food to relish with your family while away from home, then you can opt for the one with a kitchen island and outdoor kitchen to boot.

Although there is a difference in layout and the expanse of each trailer, but the significant comfort needs are included on every trailer such as the full bathroom, a kitchen area, bedrooms, and such. Just less the additional features, which may also add to the price.

Know this before you buy

As you read initially, I choose these travel trailers on few basic important factors but that’s not all that one should consider. There are several other things to look more closely before buying.

So, i would recommend you to go through each of these options and check those things. The trailers that I choose are standard and popular in the industry and they do stand tall when most of the below factors are taken in.

Lets begin.

This is an incredibly important thing that you can’t ignore. There are minute details that need to be confirmed before deciding on the RV. A bathroom too small and compact can frustrate you over period of time. Where it is paced may affect your lifestyle as well. If you have been using RV then you know some of these things already. But, if its your first time into RV’s then be very careful not only with bathroom/toilet/shower but also each of the other things. Other things that you need to pay attention in bathroom are shower, door, ceiling, lighting and the toilet.

All of the trailers that we mentioned have multiple layouts to choose from. Choose the layout carefully. Here again having previous experience with using an RV will help a lot. Check several models/floor plans and visualize the pros and cons of each. Remember it is going to be with you for long term and you don’t want to get stuck with the wrong one. Kitchen is another important part of your full time RVing and you want it just to suit your daily life. Customization could be possible but how about getting it right in the first time itself?

Power options

Electric hookup may not be available all the time and that’s when you need a generator or solar to power. Choose based on what your electric consumption could be. Getting a built in generator is much better to your comfort. Go for such a configuration if you feel you will need that 4000 Watts generator to power your appliances.

Choose the size of refrigerator, air conditioner wisely as replacing them can be costly later on. Do a thoughtful analysis on what size AC/refrigerator you will be okay living with. Having said this, do the opposite analysis as well. You don’t want to pack the RV with appliances that wont be used or excessively larger that you will ever need.

Bedroom/Bed size/Mattress

Here again as i said earlier, choose the right sleeping capacity and also the right sized bed. When the family is big, you need to consider the size of each bed carefully. Mostly, the trailers will have convertible beds to utilize the space properly. Some sleeping spots will be inside the slide out as well.

Ask Yourself this questions

After we have gone through all the things to look for, i am sure many of you may still have doubts. Its because many of you don’t know what really you need in an RV. That could be because you may have not used the RV much or not at all.

When that is the case, ask yourself below questions and you should have a fair answer.

• How often will you travel with the RV? If you plan to travel a lot then go for a smaller, light weight travel trailer.
• Will you be camping at campground all the time or will you prefer staying at lower cost campsites or go boondocking? If yes, then be sure to have good power options like generator and solar.
• Do you have kids? Total how many people will be living? If kids will be living then be sure to look at the overall space available
• Will pets be living in the travel trailer?
• Is it going to be very cold region where you will stay?
• Do you already have a towing vehicle or will you need to buy a new one?
• Are you okay with towing a travel trailer? If no, then motorhome is your next option. Class C Motorhome is most suited for those with medium budget of around $90,000 to $120,000. If you can spend higher than 1200,000 then you can go for more luxurious class A Motorhome. Class B motorhome is for those who want compact and easy to driver RV.

If you still need to explore more on what you need then its better to actually try living in different RV’s by renting. This can give you lot of insights into how it is going to be.

Best RV To Live In Year Round (Full-Time Living Choice)

What is the best RV for Full-Time Living?

If you want the very best and you have the budget, the Class A RV is considered to be the recognized winner.

However, there are other options that you will probably want to consider.

Let’s walk through a list of options decide which RV is best for your life and budget.

Motorized vs Towable

When choosing your RV, you will need to decide between certain features. One of those choices will be whether you value the additional space and easy detachability of your tow vehicle versus the easy setup of your campsite, constant bathroom access, and easy travel of the motorized RV.

If you want the quick public poll, towable vehicles are generally considered to be the RV choice for the occasional weekend trip, and the motorized RVs are the choice for those that intend on living in their RV full-time. Everyone has different needs though, so let’s delve a little bit into why that is to see if you agree with the common logic.

Towable Benefits

Easy Access to Tow Vehicle – You will have difficulty with maneuverability and parking if you plan on living in an RV that approaches 30 feet in length or longer.  Having an easily attachable and detachable truck can make those trips into town a lot less frustrating.

More Space – Towable RVs have a lot of extra room because they don’t need to house all the parts that make the RV function like a regular vehicle (You know, parts like an engine). It all adds up to a decent amount of additional space that you will value as your mind inevitably switches from counting feet to counting inches.

Fewer Repairs and Removing Some Potential Major Repairs – When your RV doesn’t need to pull itself, things become less expensive. You don’t need to repair an engine that doesn’t exist. Sure, the tow vehicle will still need repairs, but that is almost guaranteed to be cheaper than an expensive RV repair. Fewer mechanics have what can be considered qualified experience on repairing RVs (More Complicated Machines) which can make them more expensive. It is a more specialized niche.

Also, less time in the shop means less money paying for other accommodations.

You Might Save on Gas – When your Camper is parked, your easily detachable tow vehicle will very likely have much better gas mileage than the motorized camper that you might have otherwise been taking.

Towable RVs are much Cheaper – Towable RVs are essentially odd shaped houses when you remove the parts that give them the ability to move themselves. The comparatively simple design makes them a cheaper purchase.

Motorized Benefits Simple Arrivals and Departures – Motorized vehicles are famous for the simplicity of the transition from a campground to the road. If you are not hooked up to a power, water, or sewage pipe; you can literally wake up, walk to the driver’s seat, and take off. The value of this can not be overstated if you plan on traveling from point-to-point on a normal basis.

Access To the Bathroom and Food Storage While Traveling – In a motorized camper, you have constant access to almost everything while you are on the road. Being in the same vehicle as the bathroom can save you from making so many stops. This benefit multiplies when you are traveling with a family, especially a large one like my own. Every bladder has a countdown, and not needing to factor that into the travel time reduces more stress than you might expect.

You Don’t Need to Leave the Vehicle

You will really appreciate owning a motorized RV when you pull up to your campsite during a rainstorm or snowstorm. You don’t have to set a foot outside to get to your home. You are already there, so sit on the couch, crawl into bed, maybe watch some TV, or read a book. The point is that you can relax in hopefully complete protection from the elements.

When you are going to live in a camper, the bigger the space is the better. Obviously, the length is going to be a sliding scale expense. You will need to decide if you prioritize the features of the RV or the length of the RV. It makes it much easier to narrow down the trailer selection when you settle on this decision at the get go. It was mentioned early, but make sure to keep in mind that maneuverability and city parking become difficult as you start approaching the RVs with a length of about 30 feet.

Too Large to Park

Another important consideration will be the restrictions of national parks and campgrounds. Many of them will not be built to accommodate the longer RV’s, so you will be forced to mosey towards another location. 

Gas Versus Diesel

Diesel Engines – Better MPG, But Fuel Costs More

Diesel Engines use a direct injection system and do not require spark plugs to set off the reaction. When the pistons of diesel engines compress they increase the pressure and that increased pressure increases the heat. When it is sufficiently compressed, the heat will ignite the fuel/air mixture.

More power is generated from less fuel due to the increased compression in diesel engines. Better gas mileage is obviously desirable, but there are drawbacks to consider.

According to WorkTruckOnline, diesel has averaged an additional comparative cost of 14 cents per gallon versus the cost of regular gasoline. However, at the most expensive point, in 2008, that 14 cents of separation jumped to a whopping 76 cents.

The Noise, Noise , Noise !

Diesel engines are plagued with a rather noisy operating knock that make you think that something is wrong. There probably isn’t…It is just part of the package.

Idling Damage

Diesel Engines require a higher operating temperature to create the right conditions to create the necessary molecular reaction to explode all of the fuel that is let into the cylinder. This isn’t much of a problem. It was mentioned earlier, but I will reiterate that diesel engines are more durable than their gas fueled counterparts. That said, unneeded damage will happen if the engine is allowed to run for periods of 10 minutes or more while sitting in a single spot

There is a built in feature for this scenario. RVs with diesel engines almost always have a high idle toggle for those moments when you are stuck in traffic or just need to let the engine run for some random reason.

Maintenance Costs Further Deteriorate the Financial Advantage of Diesel Engines

While the diesel clearly wins in regards to the fuel efficiency of that type of engine. Gas engines win in terms of maintenance costs. Diesel engines are special components that are not required on a gas engine. Sometimes those parts need replacing, so that means additional maintenance costs. Also, the intervals between necessary maintenance are farther apart in gas engines, which of course, further reduces the cost.

Diesel Are More Durable and Have an Increased Life Span

While their may be more maintenance to a diesel engine, it makes up for it in its life expectancy. Of course, these numbers will vary from engine to engine, but you can probably expect to have an increased lifespan of roughly 50% between comparable engines. Repeating for emphasis – This will vary, so do not assume, do your research.

The reason for the increased life span is due to the necessity of a more durable engine. As stated earlier, diesel engines must withstand more powerful explosions because the fuel ignites at a higher level of compression. Specifically, they must withstand a compression of 17:1 vs a gasoline engines compression of 9:1.

Gasoline is also known to be more corrosive than diesel, so it can wear down the cylinders much faster.

This increased durability has a solid affect upon the resale value of your RV, so consider that if you plan on switching to another RV somewhere down the line.

Differences Between RV Classifications

Now that we have considered the basic options. Let’s look at the differences between the following RV classifications:

The Motorized Classes AKA Motorhomes

Class A – The Beauty Is the Beast

BIG – Described as large and boxy, these are typically the largest RVs on the market. If you have ever rolled up next to an RV that looks like a bus; that is probably a Class A . That observation wouldn’t be far from the actual truth because these motorhomes are actually built on either a bus chassis, a motor vehicle chassis, or a commercial truck chassis.

The size can vary and overlap with the Class C Motorhome and Fifth Wheel Campers. It is common to find these motorhomes between the length of 21 to 45 feet.

Class A RVs have large bedrooms and kitchens, and are equipped with slide outs that can increase the width of the rooms by one to three feet (Generally Speaking of course).

Bad Gas Mileage – It doesn’t take a large leap in logic to realize that the bigger the vehicle the worse the gas mileage is going to be. In the case of Class A campers, you are likely looking at about 8 – 10 MPG.

Fully Featured – This is the luxury class of Motorhomes, so it is expected that it is going to have all of the features. This means big bedrooms, bathroom, and kitchen. The bathroom will have an enclosed shower, there will likely be an ice machine, dishwasher , multiple slide outs, high quality entertainment system (surround sound and HDTV’s), and a basement for storage.

Sleeps a lot of people – The numbers very because the size and features very. However, you will find that the Class A’s will comfortably sleep somewhere between 1 – 10 people

A Giant In a Land Of Midgets

It will be stated several times, but it needs to be understood that the larger sizes can make some roads inaccessible, and parking lots can be a bit of a nightmare due to the size and maneuverability.

Camper vans

There are a lot of advantages to camper vans, but I can hardly recommend for anything more than a weekend trip. It might be perfect for you though, so let’s see what it has to offer.

The Benefits and Disadvantages of Small RVs – Sure, large RV’s are the height of camper luxury. They offer amenities that you couldn’t hope to fit into a camper van. There are things to be envied in these little homes.

Gas Mileage – You will appreciate the gas mileage of a camper doesn’t need to haul around a cabin that is the size of a bus. The actual MPG will vary, but it will be consistently higher than anything that a Class A or C could offer.

Driving is Easy – You can drive anywhere that a normal van can drive because you are almost the same size.

Small Spaces and Small Storage – You’re tiny which means your storage is tiny. Anything you bring aboard is going to take up some very valuable space. This class of RV typically have a bathroom, kitchen, and a living room, but none of it would be described as comfortable. There may be some exceptions to this, but this will be the general rule.

Wetbath – Did I mention tiny spaces? By necessity, the toilet and the shower will share the same spaces. This works in the short-term, but it isn’t something that I would want in a full-time living situation

This type of motorhome can be identified by the space that extends over the cabin which will either be the sleeping quarters or some extra and valuable storage. It is a bit of a mishmash of the different class RVs which helps to bring the expected features of the Class A’s- including slide outs – into the price range of someone with a slightly tighter budget. Class C’s are built upon the chassis of a truck or a van which helps to bring the cost down a bit. Middle class luxury describes it pretty well.

Sleeps a Good Amount – These motorhomes will typically have enough beds and convertible sofas to comfortably sleep 4 to 8 people.

The Cost – When compared to the cost of a Class A RV. Apples to apples, you are going to save a rough 10k to 15k at the dealership.

Sleeping Spaces – Remember those luxurious large rooms in the Class A’s? You will find similar rooms here. Fantastic for living in on a more permanent basis.

Cheaper Repairs – When it comes to RV’s, you are usually going to spend a lot ro repair them. Class C’s are a bit of a special case. The engine is accessible as any truck, and it is built upon a common chassis. These RV’s can be repaired by most mechanics

Lighter, Generally – This breed is usually lighter which makes the MPG a bit more affordable.

The Towable Classes

Quick Rundown

Fifth Wheels are fantastic for full time living .

Travel trailers can be good for a vacation.

Popup campers (folding trailers) are good for a weekend at a campsite.

Fifth Wheels

These luxury liners are the only trailers that can match the titan that is a the Class A’s. They are fully featured, and they actually even beat the Class A kitchens in size. Usually equipped with an island – you have a kitchen that even an Iron Chef would envy.

Better Turning Radius – The towing vehicle will add a pivot point that will allow the 5th wheel RV to manipulate small spaces more effectively than a Class A motorhome. You will appreciate this more if purchase a longer vehicle, but it will be useful no matter the length.

Taller Ceilings and Wider Rooms – The camper life will not be attractive for some with claustrophobic issues. The fifth wheel is the best at alleviating these ceilings with its higher ceilings. The rooms will also be larger, this choice will go a long way to making people feel as  comfortable as possible.

Cheaper Insurance – Clearly, the insurance is going to be more expensive than a camper van, but it is also going to cheaper than its running mate, the class A. Removing the engine and other automotive pieces mean that there is less for insurance companies to insure.

Length – These trailers can vary in size from what most would consider small to a mid range RV. You will find that most of them will be somewhere between 12 to 35 feet which can make towing a manageable experience for the average newbie.

Sleeping Situation – Depending upon the length, you can expect to snugly settle 4 to 8 people in the provided sleeping quarters.

Expandable – Not all of the travel trailers offer this, but you will tend to find that most of the modern travel trailers are expandable.

Popup Campers (Folding Trailers {Tent Trailers})

Pop up campers are good for a weekend, but I highly doubt that you will be comfortable with a vehicle that perspires. Condensation is a real issue here which means so is mold. Very Small Living Quarters – You won’t be able to stretch in a tent trailer. They aren’t designed for long term comfort. They are designed for a fun weekend.

No Bathroom – There aren’t any bathrooms on a tent trailer.

Canvas Walls – There is a reason that these are called tent trailers. They are mostly canvass, so say goodbye to any sense of privacy.

Tips for RV Camping in Freezing Temperatures

Here we will give you a few tips on how to improve your camping experience when it is extremely cold outside.

1. Install and Upgrade Your RV Insulation

Insulation is the most important thing for winter campers. It makes it so your trailer stays warm even when it is extremely cold outside. Without insulation, you will have several very cold nights.

To improve your camper’s insulation , you can do things like seal your windows and doors so that no cold air seeps in through the cracks. You can also install window covering to help insulate your windows. Windows are one of the most difficult places in the trailer to insulate, so it is where you should put the most effort.

2. Install RV Skirting

A great way to keep your camper warmer while camping in freezing temperatures is to add skirting around your travel trailer. Skirting helps to shield the underside of your camper from wind and cold air thereby keeping your tanks, pipes, and even the inside of your RV warmer.

2. Protect Your Plumbing

The last thing you want is to have your plumbing pipes and or tanks freeze while you are in the middle of nowhere on a camping trip. When water freezes it expands which means there is a big risk of pipes cracking and bursting.

So, you need to protect your plumbing before any issues arise. You can do this by putting heat tape on your pipes and hoses.

You can also add a small amount of antifreeze to your holding tanks so that they do not freeze. However, you want to make sure that you do not add too much because that can cause issues as well.

3. Watch Out for Black Ice

Even once you have winterized your travel trailer, you are not completely out of the woods. The winter is one of the most dangerous times to be driving and snow and black ice are two of the biggest reasons for that.

If you do not know, black ice is ice that you cannot see because it blends in with concrete. This type of ice is one of the biggest causes of car crashes during the winter, so you need to be careful while you are on the road.

A lot of people will not do anything to improve their experience once their trailer is fully insulated and their plumbing is protected. However, there are still things you can do to improve your quality of life.

For example, when you are outside your trailer you probably will not have a lot of your electrical equipment on. That sometimes will include your heating system.

So, when you get back to your trailer at the end of the day you will need to heat up your trailer. However, heating systems can take a while to heat a trailer. If you purchase a space heater, it will accelerate the speed at which your trailer heats up which is very nice. We love our Mr. Buddy space heater ! It keeps us and the RV nice and toasty!

5. Inspect Your Furnace Before Leaving

Your furnace is going to have a heavy workload while you are on your winter camping trip. So, it is very important to make sure that it is working properly before you leave.

If you want to inspect it yourself, you should check to make sure that there are not any obstructions that could limit airflow. You should also consider purchasing a dehumidifier to ensure that moisture does not get into your furnace.

Condensation can cause corrosion in your furnace, engine, and pipes. This can cause serious issues, so it is better to play it safe and get a dehumidifier.

We just bought a Northwood Arctic Fox 25Y after a nasty Aspen Trail. Love our new trailer. Even sitting in our back yard with well below freezing temps, it is still at least 20-30 degrees warming inside with no heat on than the Aspen Trail.

I would stack up my Big Foot 25B25RQ against any of these as a four season trailer.

The hallmark of a true 4 season travel trailer is that the waste gates are enclosed in the heated underbelly. Some of the trailers on your list have this feature; others do not. The photo of the underside of the Dutchmen shows how the entire length of the waste line is exposed. There is no way that aftermarket heat tape would turn this unit into a 4 season camper. A brand not on your list whose trailers and 5th wheels are all 4 season is Grand Design. They are also lighter and less expensive than the better known brands like Outdoors RV and Arctic Fox.

It's 9pm on a Tuesday and a stranger from Shanghai is cooking in my kitchen. I can't speak Chinese, and she can't speak much English, so we both had to mime when she asked me where I kept the knives and the salt.

I hadn't met this woman until 24 hours earlier, but she is staying in my home for another four days - and it's all thanks to an advert on the London Underground.

"Turn your spare room into cash using Airbnb!" it promised. Well, I am lucky enough to have a spare room, and I never seem to have enough cash (thanks to a litany of rising bills and wanting the occasional holiday), so could this be the answer?

I forced my husband to spend a weekend clearing out our top floor room and soon I was photographing away, artfully framing different corners of the space to try and show it off (not helped by my cat, who refused to get out of the way). 

After downloading the app and signing up, I was paired with an Airbnb Superhost who gave tips and offered support as I made my way to my first booking. He advised that instead of offering an introductory discount, as the app encouraged, the best way to drum up business was to look up the price of local listings and then undercut them. Once I had built up a few reviews (I was aiming for five stars) I could then raise my prices.

My neighbours were listed between £40-55 a night, so I hedged my bets and started at £35, with a £10 cleaning fee. Within 24 hours, I had my first booking. A young borderforce agent was doing training at Heathrow and needed a place to stay. We gave him a set of keys, told him to make himself at home and five days later, we were £117 better off. 

After several months of hosting (and - not bragging - ten five-star reviews) we are now almost solidly booked at any given time. 

Tips for smooth sailing welcoming strangers

I have a pretty good weirdo-radar, and when it comes to letting people inside your front door, it pays to trust your gut - I have declined bookings simply because I got bad vibes. 

The guy who wanted to rent my room from 9am to 3pm to "meet a friend from London"? Nope. 

The man who wanted to stay for three months? Not for me. 

A young gentleman who promised to pay me cash on arrival? Thanks but no thanks. 

(You'll notice a common theme with these - as I often work from home alone during the day, I'm not taking any chances).

Touch wood, everyone who has arrived has been friendly, polite and, most importantly, not smeared faeces on the walls, tried to remove the sink, or done any other Airbnb horror story. 

How to get good ratings

Did I mention we have five stars? I don't think there is any real secret to getting a good rating, but I tried to think what I would want checking into someone's home. Make sure you have high-quality photos that match what the room is actually like; don't go crazy with the filters. 

We always make sure the place is clean, well presented and clutter-free. Small, thoughtful touches like a TV with a Sky box, a box of toiletries, and a coffee machine also go a long way. 

I am also very upfront about the fact we have pets - the last thing I want is someone with allergies to book (and give me two stars!), so Louie sits front and centre of the listing. 

The pitfalls to avoid

After the success of Airbnb, I decided to go one step further and list our room on Booking.com. Their management platform is clunky, difficult to use and you can't vet people who book - they just instantly book and that's it, you're stuck with them. It's also a bit of a faff double-checking both platforms to make sure you aren't accidentally double booking. But it does generate significantly more bookings for us that Airbnb. 

As boring as it is, you also need to consider the tax implications. The good news is Airbnb isn't taxed like Vinted or eBay (which has a £1,000 tax-free allowance). 

If you rent a furnished room in your primary residence (ie not a second home) you can claim Rent-a-Room relief . The threshold for this is £7,500 per year (or half that if you share the income with your partner). The tax exemption is automatic, which means if you're below that you don't need to do anything - but if you're earning above that, you'll need to fill out a tax return. Given we are earning around £350 a month from our room, we will fall way below this. 

I convinced my mum to list her guest room on the platform, and she has also had decent success (excusing the girls who threw up in her bin during Cheltenham race week and the woman who knocked a star off because she forgot to put a hand towel in the bathroom). I then talked my brother's girlfriend into giving it a go.

I did, however, make one fairly significant error: I forgot to get them to sign up using my host referral code. You can earn up to £268 for every host you refer, which means I lost out on a fairly significant chunk of change. I then forgot to refer them again when they moved to Booking.com so missed out on hundreds in commission-free bookings under their scheme. I try not to think about that too much…

Overall, I have loved using Airbnb - in just over two months we've converted our spare room into more than £700. And while I would like to live in a world where we could afford our daily outgoings without flogging our spare room like a cheap roadside motel, we are where we are. 

If you have the room, a good radar for vetting people, and are open to intrusion on your personal space, it could be right for you too.

The average cost of a home in Britain remains near record levels after dipping by just £21 this month, according to an index.

Rightmove said the average asking price of a home coming onto the market in June was £375,110 - down just a fraction compared with the record £375,131 seen in May.

The property website said the number of sales agreed and volume of buyer inquiries to agents remained steady.

But it said there could be some "possible election caution" among those thinking about moving, particularly people with higher-priced homes.

Rightmove is just one measurer of house prices and tends to come in higher - official data from the ONS lags by several months.

Staying on the subject of housing... a new study by Hamptons has revealed that renting is still cheaper than buying for most households across Britain.

Its latest research found that would-be-buyers with a 5% deposit face paying £300 a month more in mortgage repayments on average than if they carried on renting.

Hamptons said high mortgage rates had "squeezed buyers with small deposits out of the market, forcing more households to rent for longer".

Fuel retailers have been accused of using the "distraction" of the general election to keep petrol and diesel prices "persistently high".

The RAC said the cost of filling up at the pumps was "far higher" than would normally be expected as wholesale costs had fallen since the end of April.

The average price of a litre of petrol across the UK is currently 146.3p, which is "5p more expensive than it should be", according to the motoring firm.

It said the average price for the same product was 141.1p in Northern Ireland.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said the number of children who will fall under the cap - which limits child benefits for the first two children in most households - will reach 670,000 by the end of the next parliament if the policy is not reformed.

The two-child benefit cap, which restricts Child Tax Credit and Universal Credit to the first two children, was brought in by the Conservative government in 2017.

Campaigners have long called for it to be abolished on the grounds it would lift thousands of children out of poverty.

Labour has said it can't commit to removing the cap if it forms the next government due to fiscal constraints.

Shein has put up prices by more than a third on some products, in a move deemed likely to boost revenues ahead of its planned IPO (initial public offering).

Analysis by research firm EDITED claims the fast fashion giant's price rises were higher than rival brands H&M and Zara over the past year.

Based in Singapore, Shein has become one of the world's largest online fashion retailers, although its growth has not been untroubled amid mounting concerns about labour standards.

Its online marketplace sells a huge array of items, though its main business is through making and selling its own brand products - mainly women's clothing.

Earlier this month, Sky News' city editor Mark Kleinman exclusively revealed how the company was on the verge of taking a huge stride towards a London flotation that would value it at about £50bn.

The timing of the filing did not necessarily indicate when an IPO would take place, although some observers believe a summer or early autumn stock market debut in London remains on the cards.

An initial public offering is when shares of a private company are made available to the public for the first time. It allows a company to raise equity capital from public investors.

Fewer temporary summer jobs are being posted this year, according to data from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. 

Job postings for summer work in the hotel, restaurant, tourism and construction sectors fell sharply in April and May compared with the same months last year. 

The total number of job listings across the economy fell by 0.7% last month to 1.7 million and new job listings fell by 1.1% between April and May. 

A lobby group says the fall in postings is due to a rise in the minimum wage which is putting pressure on employers. 

The minimum wage rose by 9.8% in April to £11.44 per hour. 

Make UK, which lobbies for manufacturing companies, said a second big increase in the minimum wage has affecting hiring in key sectors. 

"We can see some evidence of that drag in the lower summer seasonal hiring demand," he told The Times .

"Reducing hours or roles while opening for shorter periods are all decisions that firms may feel forced to make in tough times."

The contrast is more pronounced given June 2023 was the hottest on record - while June 2024 temperatures have been around 2C lower than average for the time of year.

London was 16C last week - down from 32C at the same time a year ago, while weather warnings for storms were in place in Scotland and the North this weekend.

Samual Peek, senior analyst at Cornwall Insight, said that although demand was up, it was not high enough to push up wholesale prices.

"The increase in gas demand at the start of June compared to the same time last year is currently not feeding through to wholesale prices, and so the impact on consumers - at least for now - appears limited," he said.

Temperatures are expected to inch up this week - though the Met Office says there will likely be a mixture of rain, clouds and sun until the middle of next month.

"The forecast into next week remains largely unsettled with showers, some heavy, in places. On the bright side, it will feel warm in any sunshine," a spokesperson said.

During the current period from 1 April to 30 June, the energy price cap is  set at £1,690 per year  for a typical bill - half of where it peaked during the energy crisis sparked by the Ukraine war but still significantly above pre-COVID levels.

The cap falls to £1,568 on 1 July.

London stocks are up slightly today ahead of a big week of economic data.

New inflation figures are set to be released on Wednesday, while the Bank of England will announce its latest interest rate decision on Thursday.

Investors are perhaps a bit cautious ahead of the publication of the key numbers, with no major movers in early trading.

Overall, the FTSE 100 is up 0.1% and the FTSE 250 is up 0.3% so far.

Telecoms firms are among the gainers on Monday, with BT Group up nearly 2% and Vodafone rising 1.2%.

Grocery delivery firm Ocado is down 2%, while mining giant Rio Tinto has slipped 1.1%.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.27 US or €1.18.

Meanwhile, the cost of oil is flat this morning, with a barrel of Brent Crude priced at just over $82 (£65).

It comes as motoring firm the RAC expressed concern this morning that fuel prices in Britain remain high despite a fall in wholesale costs in recent weeks.

Another company is recalling a product as a "precautionary measure" due to the possible risk of E.coli.

THIS! says customers who bought its vegan chicken and bacon wrap anytime up to and including Tuesday 18 June should not eat it and should return it for a refund.

The wrap is only sold at WHSmith.

It comes days after sandwich makers Greencore and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood, which supply UK supermarkets, recalled a list of products as a precautionary step.

Products from Boots, Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury's and Amazon are part of that recall.

The Food Standards Agency's head of incidents, Darren Whitby, said it was working with Food Standards Scotland and the UK Health Security Agency to "identify the cause of an ongoing outbreak" caused by the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).

Symptoms include "severe and sometimes bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever", said Trish Mannes from the UKHSA.

However, some cases can cause serous complications that can lead to kidney failure.

People are being advised to follow NHS.uk guidance if they become unwell.

There were 211 cases associated with the STEC outbreak as of 11 June - up from 113 five days earlier.

Yorkshire-based solicitors Graysons advises that anyone who falls ill due to food poisoning generally could be due compensation - but only if negligence is at play.

The circumstances of these E.coli recalls are far from clear - but more generally, the firm says...

"You can sue a food company for compensation for food poisoning if the food poisoning results from their negligence.

"You can bring a food compensation claim against any food outlet or even a friend who negligently makes you ill at a dinner party.  

"You will be able to claim for your pain and suffering, as well as any financial losses, including the costs of treatment and any lost earnings. 

"If you want to make a food poisoning compensation claim, you should work with an experienced personal injury lawyer."

As part of our research into this answer, we spoke to Sean White, managing partner of Courtyard Solicitors , who said you should get your admin in order first.

"Start by thoroughly documenting the issue. Take clear photographs showing the deterioration of the fence and the encroaching weeds from your neighbour's side," he said.

"Review local regulations concerning property maintenance and fencing to understand your rights and responsibilities."

Next, draft a formal letter addressed to both your neighbour and the council - attaching the documentation you've gathered.

"Clearly explain the problem and its impact on your property and politely request prompt action to resolve the issue," said Mr White.

If direct communication with your neighbour fails, Mr White says consider utilising mediation services to facilitate a constructive discussion.

Mediation is when an impartial professional helps both sides work out an agreement. It's private and usually quicker and cheaper than going to court. Your local council should be able to advise on what mediation services are available near you - and you can find more information here .

If the council remains unresponsive, Mr White suggests escalating your concerns by contacting them again, emphasising any potential hazards or property damage resulting from the situation.

"If necessary, file a formal complaint with the council, providing them with comprehensive documentation of the issue and its effects."

Two avenues with your local council are:

• The Environmental Health Department, who can be contacted if excessive weeds or rubbish in a neighbour's garden are causing problems on your property so as to be a nuisance;
• Most council and housing association landlords specify tenants must keep their gardens to a "satisfactory standard".

"If you think the council is acting unreasonably you can complain to the Local Government Ombudsman," says Mr White.

As a final option, he advises, explore legal avenues by consulting with a solicitor specialising in property or neighbour disputes. 

"They can assist in obtaining copies of the title deeds to ascertain responsibility for maintaining the fence, facilitating a resolution to the issue."

The government has this information for those considering legal action against their neighbour.

Mr White says: "Throughout this process, maintain a composed and respectful demeanour, as it often helps achieve a favourable resolution for all parties involved."

Tesco's top boss has insisted the supermarket is not trying to copy Amazon with the online marketplace it launched last month.

The marketplace was launched to allow shoppers to buy third-party products like homeware and toys while ordering groceries.

"The primary focus of marketplace is to build out and extend the range of food, food related and home products available to customers – so to be very clear, we are not trying to be Amazon," said chief executive Ken Murphy.

"We are not trying to be all things to all people."

It will make available "niche products" that wouldn't necessarily appear on shop shelves.

He said the new venture was "much more integrated" than Tesco Direct, which was a separate platform launched in 2012 and scrapped in 2018.

On how the marketplace is going, Mr Murphy said: "I think it's really early days. It's very hard to give you any reaction because we're really a week in - I think we've had some very positive early signals in terms of the number of orders."
