During the past year 2022 Balearia Caribbean reached 112,000 passengers on its routes between Fort Lauderdale (Florida, US) and the ports of Bimini and Freeport - Grand Bahama - in the Bahamas islands. This result represents an increase of 50% compared to 2021.

Although it has not yet been possible to recover the same level of passengers that was transported in 2019 between Fort Lauderdale (Fll) and the Bahamas, it is expected that for this year 2023 the occupancy levels of the Balearia ferry will be the same, reaching 125,000 passengers.

The volume of merchandise has been maintained with respect to the year 2021, carrying 20,000 units. In total, a total of 450 crossings have been made, with some 27,000 miles traveled.

4 weekly crossings between Fort Lauderdale and Bahamas in low season that are 6 weekly crossings during the months of maximum occupancy in summer. Balearia Caribbean Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

Balearia Caribbean's ferry ticket are not transferable. The name of the passenger cannot be modified in any case.

Those reservations whose cancellation is requested seven days before the ferry departure date, are entitled to a full refund.

If the reservation cancellation request is made between 7 and 4 days before the ferry departure date, the cancellation penalty will be 50%.

Those reservation cancellations requested three days or less before the ferry departure date will not be refunded.

Date changes : Date changes are allowed if they are requested at least 24 hours before the ferry departure date. A fare difference and a US$75 penalty will be applied for each change.

Special Offers and One day Trips: No refund will be applied for cancellations of special offers and one-day trips.

Any passenger who does not board the ferry for any reason, beyond the control of Balearia Caribbean, will not be entitled to a refund or date change under any circumstances.

Balearia Caribbean does not assume any responsibility other than the refund of the ticket, in case it has to refund it, if the ferry trip for which the ticket has been issued does not make the stipulated trip due to operational difficulties, weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances or forces beyond Balearia Caribbean's control.

Balearia Caribbean sailing calendar from Fort Lauderdale (Florida, FLL) to Bimini (Bahamas) has changed its departure hour on Sundays. As of September 04th, 2022, the Balearia Caribbean fast ferry (Jaume I) that makes the route from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini changes its Sunday departure time from Florida leaving at 09:00 am just like every other sailing.

Balearia Caribbean's booking system has been updated to reflect this change from now with the new schedule. All passengers who have booked ferry tickets for those days are being notified of this change via email or text.

New requirements effective on June 19th, 2022 .

June 17th, 2022: ALL passengers will NO LONGER need a Bahamas Health Visa starting on June 19th, 2022

Every passenger that is fully vaccinated WILL NO LONGER NEED A TEST .

All unvaccinated travelers ages 2 and older will be required to obtain either a negative RT-PCR test or a Rapid Antigen test— taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to travel and present the negative test results at check-in before travel to The Bahamas.

Passengers will be required to bring Covid test result, proof of vaccinations (original card) on travel day. This is a mandatory request by The Bahamas government. The embarkation may be denied due to failure of facilitating the proper travel documents.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt from testing requirements.

* Currently, no Covid test or vaccination is required to enter Florida when traveling by ferry.

May 31, 2022: LATEST UPDATE from the Bahamian authorities regarding passengers traveling to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) on the day trip. Although those passengers who come to the Bahamas for one day trip do not need to present the Health Visa upon arrival at the port of the Bahamas, it is mandatory that they present a negative result of a rapid antigen test upon arrival.

All other passengers who spend at least one night in the Bahamas must present the Health Visa upon arrival in the country.

As of now, May 2022, the health visa that was requested by the Bahamian authorities from Balearia Caribbean passengers on a one day trip to the Bahamas (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) will no longer be mandatory however they are requiring a Negative RAPID Test.

With this new initiative of the permanent secretary of the Bahamas government, it is intended to increase the number of visitors and travelers of the one day trip, in both directions, both for those who want to travel to the Bahamas (Bimini and Grand Bahama), and for those Bahamians who want to travel to the United States.

The government of the Bahamas has modified the requirements for entry into the Bahamas islands and travel between certain islands in the Bahamas in order to provide a safe and healthy island experience for all travelers visiting the Bahamas to safely enjoy the islands.

This new regulation is aimed at all people who apply for a Health Visa to travel to the Bahamas or travel between islands within the Bahamas as of next Friday, August 6, 2021.

Entering the Bahamas from other countries:

All fully vaccinated travelers, as well as children ages 2 to 11, will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a rapid antigen test or a PCR test) taken no more than five (5) days prior to departure/arrival date to the Bahamas.

Unvaccinated travelers 12 years of age and older must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 5 days prior to arrival.

All children under the age of 2 are exempt from any testing requirements.

If you want to travel between islands within the Bahamas from the following islands:

Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama (Freeport), Bimini (Alice Town), Exuma, Abaco, and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbor Island.

Requeriments for Cruise Passengers.

Guests on cruises originating in and returning to the Bahamas must apply for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa and follow the new testing requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

Vaccinated people must provide a negative PCR test or rapid antigen test performed no more than five (5) days prior to arrival in the Bahamas islands.

With the idea of ​​seeking stimuli to reactivate tourism in the Bahamas islands from next May 1st, tourists vaccinated with the 2 doses will be able to travel to the Bahamas without having to present a negative COVID 19 test result.

The Bahamas islands will allow all those people who have received the full doses of immunization, at least two weeks before traveling, to the country to enter the country. Negative PCR with up to 5 days of validity is required for the rest of the travelers.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced at a press conference that: "All that will be medically required to enter the country will be the proof of vaccination and that two weeks have passed since the final dose." This measure wants to activate tourism as soon as possible, on which the Caribbean archipelago largely depends.

The prime minister indicated that anyone who has not been fully vaccinated must provide a negative PCR test taken within five days prior to arrival in the Bahamas. "This measure will greatly enhance our economy and will also help reduce the number of infections. When tourists are fully vaccinated, since they will have received all the doses, they will be able to participate in events in a closed environment where the mask would not be necessary".

This measure has been announced when several cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Crystal Cruises and Bahamas Paradise Cruise Lines) are going to start sailing in the Bahamas from June and July, this coming summer.

Warning in the United States. On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the warning level for the Bahamas this week to the highest level of health risk, the 4.

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

At the same time, Balearia will reopen the ferry route between Florida to Bimini island starting on February 10th, 2021. This route will have, at the moment, a frequency of 3 departures a week, in both directions. The Jaume II ferry will be the ship that does both routes.

Balearia will retake its operations with a host of new health and safety protocols, including mandatory face masks, electronic boarding passes, enforced social distancing and temperature checks prior to boarding, and only 40% occupancy of the total capacity of its ferry.

Other sanitary measures imposed by Balearia are: plexiglass dividers have been placed in the common areas and between all the seats, the ship and the ferry terminals are subjected to a deep and extensive cleaning process before, during and after each crossing.

The company’s ships also undergo “deep and extensive sanitation” before, during and after each sailing, the company said. Balearia says it has been certified by Bureau Veritas with the Global Safe Site Covid-19 certificate, one of the first shipping companies to receive the designation. It should be noted that all travelers to The Bahamas must fill out an electronic travel form and have proof of a negative COVID-19 test that is no more than seven days old, among other requirements.

All passengers boarding from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Grand Bahama or Bimini (Bahamas) will have to show a negative PCR test for COVID-19 performed at least 5 days before the trip. Each passenger must also apply for a travel health visa.

NOTE: We recommend that all passengers verify all the necessary travel requirements at the time of their trip, both in and out of the countries they are going to visit, always before starting with the preparations and purchases of their ferry tickets.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

For that, Balearia Caribbean is preparing the safety and hygiene protocols (in its ships and passenger terminals) necessary to offer its customers safe transport, both for people and goods.

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

When booking your trip to The Bahamas Islands, be sure to read, understand and follow these requirements, which are mandatory and required by the government of The Bahamas

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . Also children and babies (regardless of their age) will need their own health visa (although they are not required to take the Covid test due to their age).

VACCINATED PASSENGERS

People who are fully vaccinated (2 doses or 1 dose depending on the vaccine) and who have waited as least the 14 days immunity period will be able to travel to The Bahamas without a negative COVID-19 test result.

Vaccinated passengers must provide, for their entry into the country, proof of vaccination (original card and copy of vaccination card) in addition to the approved Travel Health Visa printed on the day of travel. As we have discussed previously, this is a mandatory requirement of the Bahamian government. If you do not provide the required travel documents, boarding the ferry can be denied by the health authorities.

In case of traveling to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on a Sunday, you must bring 2 printed copies of the Travel Health Visa and Covid vaccination card plus the original.

UNVACCINATED PASSENGERS

All unvaccinated passengers over 10 years of age must submit a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test performed no more than 5 days prior to their travel date. (This requirement is not mandatory for children under 10 years old).

At the time of boarding in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and entering the country, passengers must present printed copies of the negative result of COVID 19 and of the Travel Health approved on the day of the trip. The health authorities of the Bahamas Islands are requesting these two printed reports, both the Travel Health Visa and the result of the COVID-19 RT-PCR test with a negative result. If the passenger does not provide these documents, the health authorities can deny the boarding or entry into the country.

BALEARIA CARIBBEAN'S COVID MEASURES

In order to maximize the safety and tranquility of the passengers on board, and due to the current situation, Balearia Caribbean has taken the following measures against Covid 19:

Before boarding, a member of the Balearia Caribbean staff takes the body temperature of all passengers who are going to make the trip. If the reading of this temperature is higher than 100º Fahrenheit or 37.7º Celsius, the passenger will be denied boarding on the ferry.

While in the ferry terminals and on board the boats throughout the navigation, the use of a mask or face cover is always mandatory for all passengers.

With the safety and hygiene of passengers in mind, Balearia Caribbean has installed additional disinfectant dispensers in all its terminals and on board the ship.

Plexiglass dividers and informational signs have also been placed in different areas throughout the vessel to promote safe distances between passengers and the crew members.

Very convenient and comfortable!!

Cindy at go Bahamas was awesome!!! She help me through the process of booking the ferry as well as filling us in on any information we needed seeing how this was our first time. She is very very knowledgeable and helpful!! The ferry was clean! The people working the ferry were very very friendly and the seats were very comfortable! I highly recommend this way of transportation to the Bahamas and definitely call Cindy!

A Comfortable Ride

I was pleasantly surprised by the ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport, Bahamas. All of the chairs were comfortable and fairly spacious. I sat by the window both times and enjoyed the scenery. The ride was super smooth... although I had vertigo for almost 2 weeks when I got back home. I think that it was a mixture of boat rides and plane rides back to back. The drinks at the bar are expensive. The food choices were not that great either. I didn't pay extra to go to the VIP section on the 2nd floor. They boarded first and exited first which looked nice. I also noticed that the day travelers go to exit before my group, which were the extended stay group. This meant that we were at the end of the customs line, which was irritating, but the line actually moved fairly quickly and we were out of there in about 30 minutes.

You can also take a ferry to Bimini Bahamas, which is closer (50 miles) to Miami/Fort Lauderdale using the Balearia Caribbean ferry company. This destination is only two hours from Fort Lauderdale and runs three days a week year-round. Again, this ferry is also pedestrian-only.

How to reach Freeport, Bahamas from the US

To get to Freeport, Bahamas via the Balearia Caribbean Ferry, you'll start your journey in Fort Lauderdale. After you board the ferry, you'll travel for around three hours over emerald seas until you reach the Bahamas.

Alternatively, you can choose to take the Margaritaville Cruise to Freeport. This cruise departs from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida and is a three day two night cruise that runs year-round.

A better alternative if you want to save time and money and don't want to experience a cruise is by flying directly into Freeport. Flights leave daily and Bahamasair has several non-stop options which will get you to your destinations quickly and safely.

How long does it take to reach Freeport, Bahamas from the US?

The journey to Freeport, Bahamas from Florida covers around 85 miles on the water. You'll be moving at a comfortable pace, allowing you to take in the views of this incredible tropical region.

The crossing will only last three hours from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport. However, the total journey will be around five hours, including the one-hour check-in and time for disembarking.

The flight time from Miami is around 45 minutes. When you factor in check-in time and handling your luggage once you arrive, you're looking at around three and a half hours. This makes flying the fastest option.

I booked with kiwi when I got to the airport there was no reservation I had to purchase another ticket after my card was already charged for almost double the cost I payed through kiwi eight days after I went to their office in Tortola and they refuse to give me a receipt so that I can cancel the original payment. They said “ there is no record that you used silver to travel “ I know I did not swim to Puerto Rico . If someone can help me please so that I can cancel the payment the credit card company said I need it, I have less than 14 days or I will loose my money. This is terrible and there is no local number for them.

I booked because of time of the flights. I needed to be at my destination at a specific time, and missed my appointment because of your delays.Get rid of these junk planes. The ATR planes are dated old scary planes. And maybe you could actually be on time. This airlines on time record is horrible. The communications between the gate agents and this company dont exist.. They couldn't give any answers,. When trying to find out when the flight would leave, they get no response when they asked for details on flights, they receivedconflicting information. I spent hours with orbitz to get my tsa # on my ticket. They didn’t have a place to enter. I will never use orbitz again. No customer service. A number in which u press offered options and the message replays instead of getting customer to that area. Silver did not make the promised call back. We were scheduled to travel at 12pm. The flight got delayed with no updates until 11:30am. They advised that we will receive an update at 1pm. However, the flight was then delayed until 6pm with no clear indication as to if that was the departure time. It was NOT! They decided to combine two of their scheduled flights into one due to the smaller number of passengers. If you do not wish to be inconvenienced, “STAY AWAY FROM THIS AIRLINE”!!!!!!They do have a track record of this!

Flight was delayed more than 2 hours in departure. Boarding was lengthy and passengers were very rude. I waited on the plane for almost an hour once boarded and it was very hot. The passenger next to me was clearly I’ll: coughing and sneezing the entire flight.

The flight itself was uncomfortable, with tight seating and seats they don’t recline, so be aware. I feel that I was scammed by BahamasAir. Both on flights 202 and 207, to and from Nassau - Fort Lauderdale June 2, June 6. I paid for 2 full size bags and selected seats. On both flights they told me I had not paid for luggage or seats. I was charged $100 extra each way without seat assignment. BahamasAir does not participate in TSA Pre Check. Even if you have it you cannot use it. Instead endure long lines because BahamasAir will not pay their share of PreCheck.

Harriet Ebbets OBITUARY

Harriet Ebbets, 88, passed away peacefully at Trustbridge Hospice Care Center-John Knox Village, on April 17, 2023. She was born on January 4, 1935, in Long Island (Freeport), NY, to Harry and Edith Ebbets. Harry Ebbets was a famous boxer in the 30’s and later became a renowned fight referee. Harry and Edith owned a liquor store in Freeport, where she often worked alongside her husband. In the 20’s and 30’s, Edith Rubin Ebbets was a model for Frieda Loehmann’s department store. Edith also received much recognition for her commitment to volunteering for the local organization for blind people.

After graduating from high school, Harriet attended Ithaca College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1957. Harriet went on to obtain a Master’s Degree from Penn State in Guidance. Harriet taught school for 2 years in Lindenhurst, Long Island, before leaving to become a professional bowler and a member of the AMF Staff of Champions. She toured the country conducting bowling clinics and exhibitions. In 1962, she became a member of the All American Team, which consisted of the top 5 female bowlers in the country. In 1964, Harriet became a bowling proprietor and opened “Harriet Ebbets Bay Bowl” in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1966, after selling her bowling alley, she moved to Pompano, FL, and became involved in the horse business. She partnered with a friend and later formed Act II Stables. They owned and trained 6-10 horses that raced at Pompano Park Harness Track. In 1974, Harriet opened a lounge and restaurant near the racetrack, naming it “Celebrity Lounge.” Harriet owned and managed the business for 11 years before selling it in 1985. She retired before her 50th birthday, which was always her goal. From 1985-2014, Harriet organized ladies’ golf tournaments (with the help of dear friends Eric, Lou Ann, and Cindy) at Doral Country Club in Miami, Princess Resort in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS, and Miccosukee Golf & Resort in Miami, FL.

Harriet has touched the lives of many and is survived by numerous close friends, cousins, neighbors, and her best friend Cindy Chaulsett.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Broward County.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

“Southwest Airlines Announces New MCO Route to Turks & Caicos”

This exciting announcement ahead of the summer season comes after the airline’s decision to replace its Fort Lauderdale service because they’ve relocated their hub from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando. This means no more direct flights from Fort Lauderdale to sunny Turks and Caicos.

Southwest Airline Manager, Donneike Gardiner said the team is thrilled about their route change from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Orlando, FL. She added “With MCO being a Mega Station (a hub) for us at Southwest, it increases our passenger’s ability to connect to more cities across our network by approximately 60%. Our daily passenger traffic is made up of 95%-98% connections.”

Passengers, as of Tuesday June 04th, 2024, can travel from MCO to several other nonstop routes to sunny destinations like the Turks and Caicos Islands. Gardiner, while speaking on the new chapter, said “While we will miss our direct flight into Fort Lauderdale; we’re embracing this inevitable change. I encourage our local Turks and Caicos passengers to explore the option of connecting to Fort Lauderdale via Orlando as they will have the ability to have 2 bags fly free at 50lbs, while accumulating their Rapid Rewards points that never expire.”

Nikeva Ariza, TCIAA’s Manager of Corporate Affairs & Communications also added remarks surrounding the excitement. She said “We’re always elated to add new routes to our destination. Route development is an essential part of our mandate to provide customer satisfaction and increasing revenue.” Today the first flight had 139 passengers arriving and 88 passengers departing.  While Southwest has moved from Fort Lauderdale to MCO, there are still ways to connect through Orlando. The TCIAA will continue to partner with its stakeholders to develop and promote all our airports for more route development.

Prime minister renews proclamation, declares national ocean protection week in the bahamas.

Freeport, The Bahamas – Prime Minister Philip E. Davis has once again demonstrated his commitment to marine conservation by renewing the “National Ocean Protection Week” proclamation in The Bahamas. This declaration, spanning from June 3rd to June 8th, 2024, aligns with the global celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th, highlighting the imperative of safeguarding marine ecosystems for future generations.

Andurah Daxon, Executive Director of Waterkeepers Bahamas, expressed gratitude, stating, “We commend Prime Minister Davis for his unwavering commitment to ocean conservation. By renewing the National Ocean Protection Week proclamation, he underscores the urgency of preserving our marine environment for generations.”

Casuarina Lambert McKinney, Executive Director of BREEF, echoed these sentiments, saying, “We thank Prime Minister Davis for his leadership in prioritizing the protection of our marine ecosystems. Message for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season  

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Monday, 3 rd  June 2024:    Saturday, June 1, 2024, marked the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season which will end on  30  November .  It was quite appropriate for the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) and its partners to seeks God’s protection for a safe Hurricane Season.  The team joined with Pastor Juan Montano and members of the Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Long Bay, Providenciales for worship.

Pastor Montano commended Team DDME for its family emergency management plan which provided step-by-step procedures on how to prepare.  He spoke on the topic  “Preparation and God’s People” .  His key text came from St. Matthew 7:24-25 which addressed one’s attitude towards preparation :  a wise man who built his house upon a rock.  This house did not fall when the winds blew because it was built on a rock.  He emphasi s ed that we must be prepared to help our neighbour s .  He reinforced the Church’s commitment to provide support to the work of the DDME. He stressed that it is wise for one to prepare for a storm or any adverse event; but most importantly, one must prepare for the coming of Christ.

The DDME’s theme for the 2024 Hurricane season is:  “Proactive Resilience:  Thriving through the Hurricane Season with Preparation and Vigilance” .

This theme aligns with the forecast of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is the main governing body that issues watches and warnings for much of the Atlantic Basin.  NOAA has stated that the stage is set for what could be the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history.  The official forecast called for 17-25 total named storms, 8-13 hurricanes, and 4-7 major hurricanes.  It is, therefore, imperative for the people of the Turks and Caicos islands to continue to foster the mindset and culture of Proactive Resilience.  In order to survive and thrive through this Hurricane Season, the public is encouraged to be prepared and be vigilant.

Here are a few preparedness tips:

• Have a family emergency plan and ensure that all members of your family are aware of the details of this plan.
• Remember that your home is your primary shelter.  Reinforce it and secure it well.  However, if your home is vulnerable, you must know where the nearest emergency shelter is and the safest route to get there.  Make sure you take at least three (3) days’ supply of food and water with you to the shelter.
• Trim trees that threaten buildings.

• Ensure property insurance is up-to-date.  If your property is not insured, now is the best time to get it done.

SCOTIABANK CHAMPIONS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS WITH THE EDWARD GARTLAND YOUTH CENTRE   

#TurksandCaicos, June 1, 2024 – Scotiabank TCI  recently supported the Edward Gartland Youth Centre’s (EGYC) Earth Day Sculpture initiative to amplify awareness of the reduction of plastic waste and its impact on the environment.

“We are honoured to have partnered with the Edward Gartland Centre for this inspiring endeavour,” said Dr. Suzan Snaggs-Wilson, Managing Director and Country Head, Scotiabank Turks and Caicos. “Scotiabank is a firm proponent of environmental preservation, and we recognize the critical role of education, engagement and advocacy for addressing environmental issues.”

Using artificial and natural materials, the students developed a flamingo from dried leaves and a turtle from plastics collected over a series of weeks. The collaborative structure saw students in the environmental clubs of five local schools partnering to create the final structures.

Roxann Wake-Forbes, Executive Director of the EGYC, expressed gratitude for the support received from Scotiabank over the years, noting that the collaborative efforts led to the project’s success. “We are tremendously grateful for the support of our Earth Day initiative. Today’s contribution is for the future, and we hope to continue to encourage the preservation of our environment through creative and engaging initiatives like this with the support of our corporate partners. Together, we can protect the planet for the next generation,” she said.

The sculptures have been on display at the Scotiabank main branch and several other locations within Provo since Earth Day on April 22.
