![refresh plugin safari Auto Reload icon](https://garrettjohnson.com/2020/05/03/003-auto-reload-open-source/auto-reload-icon.png#noborder)
My Mac app development journey has been a great experience and if open sourcing this trivial bit of code inspires just one other dev to give it a go, or helps someone find success then I’ll call it “mission accomplished” with this project.
The funny thing is, I hate browser extensions. I usually avoid them but there’s just some functionality I can’t do without, like auto refresh and a password manager. When Apple radically overhauled Safari extensions, the old extension I came to depend on no longer worked. At the time I was setting up mission control style monitor wall and was proper mad when suddenly my only option was to install a different web browser. If there’s one thing I dislike more than browser plugins, it’s replacing the default browser with something different and having yet another maintenance concern. The effort required to turn a fresh MacOS install into a digital sign server should be near zero in my opinion.
I’m not one to let a good nerd rage go to waste, so I dove into Xcode and Swift to code up a quick app. I originally was going to make it free for everyone, but then I thought, “Hey, I’m not paying Apple developer fees for the privilege of distributing a feature that they messed up.” and Auto Reload got a $.99 price tag.
The changes to Safari were fantastic in my opinion. Browser add-ons are one of the last scourges of personal computing. Heck yes I want the code scanned and signed and everything to be sandboxed with clear permissions. Thank god, put as many warnings as possible between my dad and malware. Working with Xcode and the Mac App store is also a lesson in class act management of software distribution. While others (Chrome Web Store, Mozilla Add-ons) may be free, the Mac App Store is the reference implementation others should follow.
With that in mind, there are some limitations to distribution exclusively through the app store. Most prominent is that users cannot choose which version they’d like installed. It’s a feature, most people just want the latest version I think and prefer auto updates that keep their computer running smoothly. After shipping a major update though I got more than a few emails and reviews from users asking if they could revert to the older version.
That got me thinking. These users are my customers. I believe they have should have the ability to run any version they like. It’s what I would want. I don’t recommend running software that’s unstable, but they’re adults and should be able to do what they like with what they paid for. It’s not worth the effort creating a paywall website for such a small app, so really the only sane option was public binaries. If I’m releasing the binaries, then I thought, “Why not go all in and release the code?” Again, it’s what I would want.
So in summary, my first year as a Mac app developer with a simple store offering has taught me a lot. It has corrected and enhanced much of my understanding of what it means to ship software that makes money. While I’ll continue to maintain Auto Reload with a narrow scope focused on stability, I now look forward most to it helping other developers on journeys of their own.

Ratings and Reviews
Does what is claimed, but not a good solution.
Doe this auto-refresh web pages? Yes. Yes it does. The problem is, if you want to auto-refresh a web page, this extension auto-refreshed every open tab. so, if you need to use this as a keep-alive on a web page, all your tabs are refreshed. And these refreshes mean that whatever page you are currently viewing will refresh, and return you back to the top of the viewable page making it impossible to read large documents in a browser, and refresh a specific tab. This, to me, is a major lmitation that impoacts the usablity of Safari, which means this is not the right solution for me.
I first downloaded and usded it without a problem. 1 week later, once i click start, it refreshes once and doesnt work again. i have to uninstall it and reinstall it few times a day.
Outstanding
The only auto refresh for safari that works and it has 1 second interval refresh. Great customer service available too. Easy to install and use. Highly recommend

Introduction
Safari is a powerful and versatile web browser that comes pre-installed on Mac computers, offering a seamless and intuitive browsing experience. However, over time, you may encounter issues such as slow performance, unresponsive tabs, or unexpected crashes. When these issues arise, it may be time to refresh Safari to optimize its performance and ensure a smooth browsing experience.
Refreshing Safari involves clearing browsing data, disabling extensions, and updating the browser to the latest version. This process can help resolve various issues, including sluggishness, frequent crashes, and unresponsiveness. By following a few simple steps, you can refresh Safari and enjoy a faster, more reliable browsing experience on your Mac.
In this guide, we will walk you through the process of refreshing Safari on your Mac, providing step-by-step instructions to help you optimize the browser's performance. Whether you're a seasoned Mac user or new to the platform, these straightforward steps will enable you to refresh Safari and address common browsing issues effectively.
By taking the time to refresh Safari, you can enhance its stability, speed, and overall functionality, ensuring that you can browse the web with ease and confidence. So, let's dive into the steps and revitalize your Safari browsing experience on your Mac.
Step 1: Open Safari
To begin the process of refreshing Safari on your Mac, you'll first need to open the Safari browser. Safari is typically located in the Dock at the bottom of the screen, making it easily accessible. Alternatively, you can find it in the Applications folder within Finder. Once you've located the Safari icon, simply click on it to launch the browser.
Upon opening Safari, you'll be greeted by the familiar interface, featuring the address bar, bookmarks, and various navigation tools. If Safari was previously open, it will resume from where you left off, displaying any tabs or windows that were active during your last browsing session.
Opening Safari is the initial step in the process of refreshing the browser, setting the stage for the subsequent actions that will help optimize its performance. By ensuring that Safari is up and running, you can proceed to the next steps, which involve clearing browsing data, disabling extensions, and updating the browser to the latest version.
As you open Safari, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the browser's layout and features. This will enable you to navigate through the subsequent steps more efficiently, ensuring that you can address any browsing issues effectively. Whether you use Safari for casual web browsing, research, or work-related tasks, having a clear understanding of its interface will be beneficial as you proceed with the process of refreshing the browser.
With Safari now open on your Mac, you're ready to move on to the next step, which involves clearing browsing data to eliminate unnecessary clutter and optimize the browser's performance. This step is crucial in refreshing Safari and addressing common issues such as slow loading times and unresponsive tabs. By following the subsequent steps, you'll be able to revitalize Safari and enjoy a smoother, more efficient browsing experience on your Mac.
Step 2: Clear Browsing Data
Clearing browsing data is an essential step in refreshing Safari on your Mac. Over time, Safari accumulates temporary files, cookies, and browsing history, which can contribute to sluggish performance and unexpected behavior. By clearing this data, you can eliminate unnecessary clutter and optimize the browser's performance, resulting in faster loading times and improved responsiveness.
To clear browsing data in Safari, follow these simple steps:
Open Safari Preferences : Click on "Safari" in the top menu bar and select "Preferences." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut "Command + ," to access Safari Preferences.
Navigate to the Privacy Tab : Within the Preferences window, click on the "Privacy" tab. Here, you'll find various options related to managing website data, cookies, and other browsing information.
Manage Website Data : To clear website data, click on the "Manage Website Data" button. This will display a list of websites that have stored data on your Mac. You can choose to remove individual website data or click "Remove All" to clear all stored data.
Manage Cookies and Website Data : In the Privacy tab, you can also manage cookies and website data. Click on the "Manage Website Data" button to view and remove stored cookies and website data.
Clear History : To clear your browsing history, navigate to the "History" tab within Safari Preferences. Click on "Clear History" and select the desired time range for which you want to clear the history. You can choose to clear the history from the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history.
By following these steps, you can effectively clear browsing data in Safari, decluttering the browser and optimizing its performance. This process helps remove unnecessary files and data that may be contributing to slow loading times, unresponsive tabs, and other browsing issues. Once you've cleared the browsing data, you're ready to proceed to the next step in refreshing Safari on your Mac.
Clearing browsing data is a proactive measure to maintain Safari's efficiency and ensure a seamless browsing experience. By regularly clearing browsing data, you can prevent the accumulation of unnecessary files and data, thereby optimizing Safari's performance and responsiveness. With the browsing data cleared, you're now prepared to move on to the next steps, including disabling extensions and updating Safari to the latest version, further enhancing the browser's functionality and stability.
Step 3: Disable Extensions
Disabling extensions is a crucial step in the process of refreshing Safari on your Mac. Browser extensions, also known as add-ons or plugins, are additional software components that enhance the functionality of the browser by adding features and customization options. While extensions can be valuable tools for improving productivity and enhancing the browsing experience, they can also contribute to performance issues and unexpected behavior in Safari.
To disable extensions in Safari, follow these steps:
Navigate to the Extensions Tab : Within the Preferences window, click on the "Extensions" tab. Here, you'll find a list of installed extensions, each accompanied by a checkbox to enable or disable the extension.
Disable Extensions : To disable an extension, simply uncheck the box next to the extension's name. This action effectively disables the extension, preventing it from running and impacting Safari's performance.
Remove Unnecessary Extensions : While in the Extensions tab, take the opportunity to review the list of installed extensions. If there are any unnecessary or unused extensions, consider removing them entirely by clicking on the extension and selecting "Uninstall."
Disabling extensions in Safari can help address various browsing issues, including slow performance, frequent crashes, and compatibility issues. By temporarily disabling extensions, you can assess their impact on Safari's performance and determine whether they are contributing to any issues you may be experiencing.
Additionally, disabling extensions can serve as a troubleshooting step, allowing you to identify specific extensions that may be causing problems. By systematically disabling extensions and observing Safari's behavior, you can pinpoint any problematic extensions and take appropriate action to resolve the issues.
Once you have disabled or removed unnecessary extensions, you can proceed to the next step in refreshing Safari, which involves updating the browser to the latest version. This ensures that Safari benefits from the latest features, security enhancements, and performance optimizations, further improving its functionality and stability.
By disabling extensions in Safari, you can streamline the browser's operation, mitigate potential performance issues, and create a more reliable browsing environment on your Mac. This proactive approach to managing extensions can contribute to a smoother and more efficient browsing experience, allowing you to make the most of Safari's capabilities while minimizing potential disruptions.
Step 4: Update Safari
Updating Safari to the latest version is a pivotal step in the process of refreshing the browser on your Mac. Regular updates not only introduce new features and enhancements but also address security vulnerabilities and performance issues, ensuring that Safari operates at its best. By keeping Safari up to date , you can benefit from improved stability, compatibility with web standards, and enhanced browsing security.
To update Safari on your Mac, follow these straightforward steps:
Check for Updates : Launch Safari and click on "Safari" in the top menu bar. From the drop-down menu, select "About Safari." A window will appear, indicating the current version of Safari installed on your Mac. Next to the version number, there will be an option to "Check for Updates." Click on this option to initiate the update process.
Install Available Updates : If a new version of Safari is available, you will be prompted to install the update. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the installation. Depending on your Mac's settings, you may need to enter your administrator password to authorize the update.
Restart Safari : Once the update is successfully installed, restart Safari to apply the changes. This ensures that the latest version of Safari is active and ready for use.
By updating Safari to the latest version, you can take advantage of performance optimizations, bug fixes, and security patches released by Apple. These updates not only enhance the browsing experience but also contribute to a more secure and reliable web environment on your Mac.
In addition to updating Safari itself, it's important to ensure that your Mac's operating system is also up to date. Safari updates are often bundled with macOS updates, so keeping your Mac's operating system current is essential for maintaining the overall performance and security of Safari.
Regularly checking for and installing Safari updates is a proactive measure that helps mitigate potential browsing issues and ensures that you have access to the latest features and improvements. By incorporating the habit of updating Safari into your routine, you can optimize the browser's performance and enjoy a seamless browsing experience on your Mac.
With Safari now updated to the latest version, you're ready to proceed to the final step in refreshing the browser, which involves restarting Safari to apply the changes and ensure that the updates take effect. This last step will complete the process of refreshing Safari on your Mac, allowing you to enjoy an optimized and reliable browsing experience.
Step 5: Restart Safari
Restarting Safari is the final step in the process of refreshing the browser on your Mac. After completing the previous steps, including clearing browsing data, disabling extensions, and updating Safari to the latest version, restarting the browser is essential to ensure that the changes take effect and that Safari operates optimally.
To restart Safari, follow these simple steps:
Close Safari : If Safari is currently open, click on the Safari menu in the top menu bar and select "Quit Safari." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Q to close the browser. This action ensures that Safari completely shuts down, allowing for a fresh start when it is relaunched.
Relaunch Safari : After closing Safari, click on the Safari icon in the Dock or open it from the Applications folder. As Safari launches, it will initialize with the recent changes and optimizations applied during the refreshing process. You may notice improved responsiveness, faster loading times, and overall enhanced performance as Safari restarts with the updated settings and configurations.
By restarting Safari, you allow the browser to reset its state and apply the modifications made during the refreshing process. This ensures that any lingering issues or performance bottlenecks are addressed, providing you with a revitalized and reliable browsing experience on your Mac.
Additionally, restarting Safari serves as a proactive measure to clear temporary data and refresh the browser's operation, contributing to a smoother and more efficient browsing environment. It allows Safari to start afresh, incorporating the benefits of the previous steps and ensuring that the browser operates at its best.
As Safari restarts, take a moment to navigate through your favorite websites and web applications, observing the improvements in performance and responsiveness. You may notice that tabs load more quickly, browsing history is cleared, and any problematic extensions are effectively managed, resulting in a more seamless and enjoyable browsing experience.
With Safari successfully restarted, you have completed the process of refreshing the browser on your Mac. By following these steps, you have optimized Safari's performance, addressed common browsing issues, and created a more reliable and efficient web browsing environment. Whether you use Safari for work, research, or leisure, restarting the browser ensures that you can make the most of its capabilities and enjoy a seamless browsing experience on your Mac.

App store download (free and no Ads).
There are a few websites that I visit and that time out after a short period. It started annoying me. There are Safari extensions from App store that enable autorefreshing but none was free. I started looking for my own solutions.
It took a couple of minutes of searching online to find some articles on how to create Safari Web Extension. It seems that creating extensions for Safari is now less complicated than it used to be. I only had to rely on Apple's official docs and Mozilla MDN for this small project.
Please refer to Safari Web Extensions on how to create a Safari Web Extension project and how to install it locally on Mac. Please refer to Browser Extensions for how different components work with each other and API docs for browser extensions in general.
This AutoRefresh extension allows you to auto refresh individual tabs in Safari. The enable checkbox controlls if autorefresh is enabled, for all tabs, while start/stop button controlls if an individual tab should be autorefreshing. The implementation is not perfect. you have to "stop/start" for individual tabs if "enable" flag is toggled. There could be other bugs too so even though this works for me but it is really mainly for demo purpose for others.

Are you following a breaking news event? Maybe you’re checking up on scores of your favorite sports team? If you need the latest news from your browser, you become intimately familiar with that circular arrow refresh icon.

But who has time to spam that refresh button or wait until the screen refreshes itself?
If you want to take control of when and how a web page automatically refreshes, there are some workarounds to get there. Discover how to automatically refresh your web page using a variety of internet browsers in this article.
In a perfect world, web pages would refresh regularly with setting controls to change the frequency. Unfortunately, internet browsers don’t quite work that way. But there is something you can do about it.
Apps and extensions make the dream of automatically refreshing a web page a reality. And they’re easy to install, too!
You’d just go to your browser’s web store or search the available extensions for “auto-refresh.” Odds are that you’ll have a multitude of options to choose from with varying levels of control.
Keep reading to find Instructions for specific browsers.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page in Chrome
Google Chrome may not come with the tools to enable auto-refresh for a web page, but they make it easy to add one.
If you go to the Chrome Web Store and search for “auto-refresh,” you’ll see a handful of options available. For this example, let’s use Super Simple Auto Refresh . This extension has features like being able to set custom intervals, multiple device sync, and local storage bypass. To install it, follow the steps below:
Step 1 – Download the Extension
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1-145.png?resize=450%2C308&ssl=1)
Step 2 – Enable the Extension
- Enable the Extension by clicking on its icon in your browser toolbar (if you don’t see it, click on the jigsaw puzzle icon to see your extensions and pin it)
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1-146.png?resize=334%2C462&ssl=1)
Step 3 – Change Extension Settings
- Select the new extension icon to set refresh intervals or to stop automatic web page refresh
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/2-1.png?resize=342%2C402&ssl=1)
Just remember that you do need to be signed in to your Google account to download the extension. You can’t use incognito mode or a guest window to install it.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page in Internet Explorer
Newer versions of Internet Explorer have an option that allows you to refresh web pages automatically. It’s buried deep in the Settings menu and you can’t specify the intervals but, some users may find enabling this setting is more convenient than using a third-party app.
Check out how to get started:
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1-147.png?resize=300%2C342&ssl=1)
By default, Internet Explorer does not enable this option. So, if you’d like web pages to automatically refresh at regular intervals, you need to enable this function.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page in Microsoft Edge
The bad news is that Microsoft Edge users don’t have the option to automatically refresh a web page in their browsers, at least natively. They do have the option of using an add-on, though.
Follow these instructions to start auto-refreshing pages on Edge:
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1-148.png?resize=400%2C314&ssl=1)
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page in Firefox
Much like the other browsers on this list, Firefox doesn’t have a native function to auto-refresh web pages. But they make it simple to download an extension for this function. Here’s how to get started:
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1-149.png?resize=300%2C282&ssl=1)
The exact user interface may vary depending on the add-on you choose. However, you generally need to enable/add the add-on to your browser taskbar and click its icon to access the settings menu.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page in Safari
As much as Apple users love the Safari browser, it does have its faults – namely, a lack of native automatic refresh options. While some users may not notice their pages don’t refresh automatically, it is a useful thing to have on-hand.
Luckily, Safari users can use an extension to make up for this shortfall. Take a look at how to get this feature for your browser:
- Open Safari.
![refresh plugin safari refresh plugin safari](https://i0.wp.com/www.alphr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/2-161.png?resize=500%2C283&ssl=1)
- Choose an extension and download it to your device.
Some extensions like Browser Auto Refresh are free to download. For some others, you may have to pay a small download fee.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page on iOS
If you’re using a mobile device like an iPhone or an iPad, you can always do a “hard refresh” by pressing the circular arrow in the browser address bar. But some users are looking for a refresh option that doesn’t require so much babysitting.
The simplest solution is to use an app or extension for your browser.
Where you go for your extensions depends on the browser you’re using on your device. If you have Google iOS installed on your phone, you’ll need to head over to the Chrome App store to find an extension. On the other hand, if you’re using Safari, your extension solution is probably waiting for you in the Apple App Store.
Generally, the Google extensions are downloadable free of charge. But you may have to pay a small fee for Safari ones in the App store. It all depends on the extension you decide to try.
When you find one you like, just hit the “Download” button and follow the prompts to get started. These extensions aren’t overly complicated to use and you can usually set intervals by tapping on the extension icon.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page on Android
Browsers on Android devices don’t have an auto-refresh function for their browsers. But you can download an app to take care of that shortfall.
If you’re using Google Chrome, head over to the Play store and search for “auto-refresh.” Choose one from the results and install it on your device. It’s as simple as that.
How to Automatically Refresh a Web Page Every Minute
There are a couple of options if you want your webpage to automatically refresh at set intervals. The first one involves downloading an extension for your web browser. If that’s the way you want to go, head over to your browser’s extension store and search for “auto-refresh.” There are a variety of options for each browser.
There are a few online tools available that claim they automatically refresh web pages for you. Take these websites with a grain of salt if you decide to use them and keep your anti-virus on. Many of them are phishing sites that look for ways to reel you in for information.
How to Refresh a Web Page Automatically in JavaScript
The refresh page code for JavaScript is:
document.location.reload()
If you want to force reload a page from a server instead of a cache, use the word true in the parenthesis:
document.location.reload(true)
On the other hand, using the word false in the parenthesis automatically reloads a page using the cache.
Reloading a web page window using JavaScript uses:
window.location.reload()
If you’d like to reload a page at set intervals, you’d use a setTimeout function in the script:
setTimeout(() => {
window.location.reload (true);
Embedded in a page code, this automatically refreshes a web page every five seconds. Every time the page is reloaded, the set timer gets reset for another five seconds.
If you just want the JavaScript function to refresh a page, it’s location.reload() .
How to Automatically Reload a Web Page at a Certain Time
Auto-refreshing is one of those functions that everybody takes for granted until it’s not available anymore. And unfortunately, many of today’s favorite browsers don’t reload pages automatically, let alone specify refresh times.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t set this up!
You just need to go to an outside source to get your web page to automatically reload. It’s as simple as going to your browser’s app/extension store and finding one you like:
- Launch your browser.
- Go to app/extension store (Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-Ons, Microsoft Edge Add-ons Store, etc.).
- Enter “auto-refresh” in the search bar.
- Choose an extension.
- Follow the prompts to download and install the extension onto your browser toolbar.
Read the descriptions carefully when choosing an extension. You may see a handful of results, but only some, like Super Simple Auto Refresh, give you the option to set custom intervals for refreshing pages.
How to Refresh a Web Page After a Few Seconds
You have a couple of options if you want to refresh a webpage after a few seconds. Going manual is the first option and that simply involves pressing the refresh icon next to the address bar. But if you’re trying to get tickets to a hot event or in an intense auction, that may get tedious.
So, option number two is to look for a third-party extension for your browser.
Luckily, that’s not as difficult as it sounds.
Simply go to your browser’s app store and search for auto-refreshers. Some may fit the bill while others only refresh after lengthy intervals, so check out all of your options before downloading one.
Additional FAQs
What is the shortcut to refreshing a web page.
If you want to refresh a page without hitting the refresh icon, here are a few ways to do it:
• Press the F5 key (or hold down Fn and press F5)
• Control + R (Windows)
• Command + R (Mac)
Force-refreshing a web page is another option you can do with shortcuts. When you force-refresh a page, it clears the current page’s cache. This means that you only see the most recent version of the browser page. Check out how to force-refresh pages like a pro:
• Control + F5 or Control + browser refresh icon (Windows)
• Command + Shift + R or Shift + R (Mac, Safari)
How Do I Set Tabs to Auto Refresh?
Unfortunately, your browser does not have the capacity to auto-refresh individual tabs. But there is a workaround for this function.
Head to the browser extension store and search “tab auto-refresh.”
Extensions like Firefox’s Tab Auto Refresh by Alex target individual tabs of your choice. Each browser has extensions similar to the Tab Auto Refresh, so read the descriptions first. The last thing you want to do is waste time downloading something you don’t need.

Let Your Browser Do the Hard Work
Sometimes refreshing a web page is all that stands between you and a big win – whether it’s tickets to a hot event or winning an auction. Don’t let manual refreshing hold you back from those dreams of finally attending Comic-Con. Download a browser extension that does the hard work for you. Then, all you have to do is sit back and wait for your turn.

What is the easiest way to make your browser refresh a page every say, 5 seconds?
Is there a browser that supports refreshing a page every say, 5 seconds? Is there an add-on?
If not, is there a more simple way than writing a full (C# or Java) program in order to do that?
Added: Opera is horrible! I set Stack Overflow to refresh every 5 seconds, but when I click on a post, it refreshes it every 5 secs too! I just wanted the main page to refresh every 5 seconds.
Another "Added": apparently it refreshes the current tab, so as long as I open the post in a new tab, it works great.
- 1 Whatever solution you select, it might be good to see what is being refreshed. Like Drostie's Greasemonkey option will NOT make your browser request cached things again (which is GOOD), while other solutions might make your browser request ALL anew. This is like the difference between typing a URL (or a bookmark, or hitting Ctrl-L followed by Return) compared to hitting refresh. The latter makes most browsers even ask the server if cached things need updating. That slows down things. – Arjan Oct 16, 2010 at 12:10
- 2 Also, some solutions might render the refreshed page in a nicer way than other solutions -- like I would hate to see a page being fully rendered all over again. Also, I assume most (if not all) answers imply that the browser will scroll back to the top of the page? (Curious about which answer turns out to work best for you!) – Arjan Oct 16, 2010 at 12:13

Yes, Opera supports this feature out of the box. Go to the webpage, right click and select Reload Every.
See the following screenshot for illustration:

Or for Firefox, use the following one-liner as a Greasemonkey script:
![refresh plugin safari Arjan's user avatar](https://i.sstatic.net/f4Ipf.png?s=64)
- 2 window.location.reload(false) - developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/window.location is at the least more readable, if not faster. Also, if you're using a Greasemonkey script, you can always GM_registerMenuCommand instead of always refreshing on that page. – Hello71 Oct 16, 2010 at 14:08
- @Hello71, without trying in Greasemonkey but when using Safari on a Mac: just pasting the following in the location bar, javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href renders MUCH nicer than javascript:window.location.reload(false) (which completely clears the window first). Given the documentation, I don't understand why though... – Arjan Oct 16, 2010 at 15:52
- @Arjan: With a little testing, I found out that setting window.location.href to itself only reloads if the page does not have a hash at the end of it ( #12345 ). – Hello71 Oct 16, 2010 at 17:19
- @Hello71, again just using the location bar, not Greasemonkey: javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href works fine for me (testing with Stack Overflow, without anything such as Web Inspector open, and taking the cache of the site itself into account as well). But: your findings might make sense, as the hash is not included in location.href , as it's really client side only. – Arjan Oct 16, 2010 at 17:31
- @Arjan: Firefox doesn't even send a request, according to Firebug and my poor skills with Wireshark. – Hello71 Oct 16, 2010 at 17:32
Opera has a Reload Every option built into it.
If you use Firefox you can download the ReloadEvery addon.
you can do with /bin/bash and links (or any other command like curl or wget)
if you need to see the html use -source instead of -dump ;-)
Use the iMacros addon! It is available for IE, Firefox and Chrome .
iMacros is a great (and open source) web browser macro recorder addon, and refreshing a website is dead simple with it. Use this macro:
and start it with the LOOP button .
If you want to make sure that the page is really completely reloaded (not from cache) use the CLEAR command and reload the complete website via URL GOTO command:

- +1 Looks interesting.. I should consider if it's worth the effort though, as there are "out of the box" solutions. – Oren A Oct 16, 2010 at 17:52
I'm using the Auto Refresh add-on for Firefox and it works great.

To enable auto refresh in Chrome, download and install the Auto Refresh Plus extension from the Web Store.
To integrate the feature in Firefox, download and install Auto Refresh add-on, the one that Nuno recommended, and restart your browser. Then open the web page you want to refresh and select the time period of auto refresh from the right-click menu under the Auto refresh option.
Just like Om Nom Nom said, auto reload option is available in Opera by default and thus one does not need an extension.

It is to be noted that when you close any tab & reopen it afterward, the extension will keep in mind & apply the same refresh settings. There is another extension name Easy Auto Refresh .
Method 2: Refresh Web Pages Automatically in Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is also one popular web browser which has a large collection of add-ons to augment the browser functionality. To integrate an auto-refresh feature, you have to download and install the Auto Refresh add-on.
1.Go to Add-ons page in Firefox and type in the search box “ Auto Refresh ”.

4.Choose your required refresh-time. There is a further option to customize your choice also.
5.You can either permit the timer on any individual web page or make it act on all open tabs. There is an option for a hard refresh also in the add-on.
Method 3: Refresh Web Pages Automatically in Internet Explorer
One of Microsoft’s default web browsers is Internet Explorer where you don’t have a lot of options to customize. In fact, there is actually only a single add-on which is safe to use. It is very old, but basically still works in IE 11 and is named Auto IE Refresher .
- Open Internet Explorer.
![refresh plugin safari For using this add-on, click on the “Enable” button for starting the add-on](https://techcult.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/For-using-this-add-on-click-on-the-“Enable”-button-for-starting-the-add-on.png)
- There is also an option to set your refresh interval for different tabs.
Method 4: Refresh Web Pages Automatically in Safari
The “ Auto Refresh Safari ” extension is the browser extension of Safari. As you are going to install this browser extension, you will get a pop-up message saying this is not a recognized developer, so just click the “ Continue ” for installing it. Once you have installed, you can raise the refresh toolbar by clicking the “ Auto Refresh ” button.
By default, five seconds is the time interval that is set to this extension, but with a single click in the box, you can change the value to anything you want in seconds. Click the “ Start ” button & you will see the toolbar visible, from there you will be able to observe a countdown for the next refresh. For hiding the toolbar, you have to click on the button that is in the area of the navigation bar. When you are in full-screen mode, your toolbar will disappear except you hover your mouse up to the top of this browser window.
Method 5: Refresh Web Pages Automatically in Opera
There is a default auto-reload option in Opera. Hence, users do not need any extension for the same. For reloading any page in opera, you have to right-click anywhere on the opened page & select any specific time interval of your choice under “Reload Every” option.

How to Refresh Page on Safari
It's free and super easy to set up
For anyone who uses Safari on their Mac or iOS device, refreshing a webpage is a common task. Whether you're experiencing slow loading times, changes to the content, or simply need to clear your cache, there are several ways to refresh a page on Safari. In this article, we will explore why refreshing a page is important, show you the different ways to refresh a page, and troubleshoot any refreshing issues you may encounter.
Understanding the Need to Refresh a Page
Before we delve into the different ways to refresh a page, it's important to understand why refreshing a page is necessary. The internet is constantly changing, and web pages are no exception. Without refreshing a page, you may miss out on new content, updates, or changes to the website. Refreshing a page helps ensure that you are seeing the most recent and up-to-date content available.
Let's say you're browsing your favorite news website and you come across an article that catches your eye. You read the article and notice that it was published a few hours ago. However, you don't refresh the page and continue browsing the site. As you move on to other articles, you may miss out on breaking news or updates that were published after the article you read. By not refreshing the page, you're essentially limiting your access to the most current information available.
Why Refreshing a Page is Important
Auto-refreshing pages can help keep you updated on changes and news, but it can also be a burden on your internet speed and performance. When you regularly refresh pages, you have more control over when you receive up-to-date information and you can prioritize what pages you want to reload. In turn, you can optimize your browsing experience and save yourself frustration and wait time.
Refreshing a page can also be important for website owners and developers. By regularly refreshing their own pages, they can check for any errors or issues that may arise. This can help ensure that their website is running smoothly and efficiently for all users.
Common Reasons to Refresh a Page
It's important to know when and why you should refresh a page. Common reasons to refresh a page include:
To check for updated content or news articles.
To clear cache and cookies from your browser.
To fix errors caused by slow loading times or broken links.
To ensure that your browser is running smoothly and efficiently.
Refreshing a page can also be helpful when you're making changes to a website or working on a project. By regularly refreshing the page, you can see how your changes are affecting the website in real time. This can help you make adjustments and ensure that your website is functioning as intended.
In conclusion, refreshing a page is an important part of browsing the internet. By doing so, you can ensure that you're seeing the most up-to-date content available and optimize your browsing experience. Whether you're a website owner or a casual user, knowing when and why to refresh a page can help you get the most out of your internet experience.
Different Ways to Refresh a Page on Safari
Now that you understand why refreshing a page is important, let's explore the different methods available on Safari for refreshing a page:
Using the Refresh Button
The Refresh button is located in the address bar of Safari. Simply click on the button or press the Command and R keys on your keyboard, and the page will reload.
Keyboard Shortcuts for Refreshing
In addition to using the Refresh button, there are several keyboard shortcuts that you can use to refresh a page. These include:
Command + R: Reloads the current page.
Command + Shift + R: Reloads the current page and ignores cached data.
Refreshing via the Right-Click Context Menu
By right-clicking on a webpage, a context menu will appear with several options, including the option to refresh the page. This is a helpful shortcut that can save you time and effort.
Auto-Refresh Extensions for Safari
There are various extensions and add-ons available for Safari that offer auto-refresh options. These extensions allow you to set a timer and refresh the page automatically at set intervals. However, be aware that auto-refreshing can put a strain on your browser performance and internet speed. Use this option wisely and with discretion.
Troubleshooting Refresh Issues in Safari
While refreshing a page on Safari is usually a straightforward task, there may be times when you experience issues. Some common issues and their solutions include:
Clearing Cache and Cookies
Caching temporary files and cookies can improve browsing speed and performance, but it can also create problems. Clearing cache and cookies can often fix issues caused by outdated data. To do this, click on Safari in the menu bar, select Preferences, and choose the Privacy tab. From there, click Manage Website Data and select Remove All. This will clear all cache, cookies, and website data on your browser.
Disabling Browser Extensions
Browser extensions can sometimes cause issues with refreshing pages in Safari. Disabling extensions one at a time can help you identify the extension causing the problem. From the Safari menu, select Preferences, click on Extensions, and disable the extensions one by one until you find the culprit.
Updating Safari to the Latest Version
Keeping your browser up-to-date is crucial for optimal performance and resolving issues. To update Safari, click on the Apple menu and select App Store. From there, click the Updates tab and install any available updates for Safari.
Resetting Safari Settings
If none of the previous solutions work, resetting Safari to its default settings may help. From the Safari menu, select Reset Safari and choose the items you want to reset. This can include cache, history, autofill data, and more.

Use Safari extensions on your Mac
Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.
Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.
Install extensions
Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.
Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.
Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.
Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.
The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.
Click Install.
After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.
After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.
Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).
Click Extensions.
Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .
If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app
When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:
Choose Safari > Settings.
Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.
Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.
When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.
![refresh plugin safari Share button](https://cdsassets.apple.com/live/7WUAS350/images/macos/big-sur/macos-big-sur-share-icon.png)
Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.
To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.
If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.
To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.
Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:
On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.
On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.
![refresh plugin safari No alt supplied for Image](https://cdsassets.apple.com/live/7WUAS350/images/itunes/itunes-icloud-status-available-for-download-icon.png)
To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.
Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.

How to disable Safari auto-reloading pages
Safari is deciding at times to reload pages with the following message:
"This webpage was reloaded because it was using significant memory."
This varies between a minor and significant inconvenience for me. I have heard anecdotally that this also affects students attempting to fill out long quizzes/tests and they can lose all of their progress.
If this "feature" is going to exist, please at least allow us to opt-out of it.
I wanted to switch to Safari to enhance my privacy but am rather close to fully moving back to Chrome. I'd rather know that my browser is using an unnecessarily large amount of RAM than hope my page doesn't reloaded for arbitrary reasons.

Unfortunately that only treats a symptom of this problem and does not solve the problem.
Also, this doesn't even really treat the symptom. I have done this in the middle of watching a video, closed and reopened Safari, and then had Safari auto-reload the video 5 - 10 minutes later.
Doing this every 5 minutes is not realistic.

I was wondering how to stop it from automatically refreshing like that. 618 1

- Safari pages using huge amount of memory I have seen this some years ago, but I thought it was getting better. My wife goes to lots of web sites using Safari, mostly about cooking. She leaves lots of tabs open. After a week or two, the computer becomes very sluggish, and I see in Activity Monitor that there are many web pages that are using over 1 GB of memory. Is there any way to stop these web pages in Safari from using this huge amount of memory? We bought this MacBook Pro with 16 GB of RAM that was the most possible at the time, but it should not become unusable by simply opening web pages in Safari. 2216 4

Yeah the same here and that's kinda unsolvable problem for now, I guess. But, hope it will be solved soon, so now try to use Chrome instead. It surely helps)

If you need to fix this urgently and have no time for reading, contact our experts team to resolve your issue immediately.
Troubles accessing your WordPress website is a frustrating issue. Some of the problems are more typical for the Safari browser; we’ll review those as well as other ones common for any browser.
First of all, what is the issue you’ve faced? There may be several different reasons behind the problems and, hence, several ways to work around them. Is the page not loading at all, or are you trying to interact with a WordPress post, and it doesn’t work? Are you unable to log in to your admin account?
*Before trying anything else, we recommend refreshing the page where you’re experiencing problems or reopening the browser. It helps in many situations: from a page not loading to post interaction issues (like being unable to react to a post). Click the refresh icon next to the address bar and see if it worked.*
Troubles when loading a page
Check browser compatibility.
If the issue occurs when loading your WordPress site, check if you forgot to make it compatible with Safari. Cross-browser compatibility is not something that people now give much conscious attention to. Not because they’re negligent: most of the libraries and frameworks that are widely used now are already cross-browser compatible. However, issues happen.
Do you use a website builder plugin like Elementor ? Or just lots of plugins of different sorts? Normally, well-known plugins are compatible with all modern browsers. But they can be the cause of issues. That’s why we recommend sticking to the native WordPress editor (Gutenberg). We develop almost exclusively in it (unless clients require otherwise like it sometimes happens with our Figma-to-WordPress conversion ) and thus ensure no conflicts arise .
It is also important to ensure that CSS doesn’t pose any obstacles to compatibility. You can download Normalize.css to help browsers render all elements on the WordPress site according to modern standards.
![refresh plugin safari WordPress Problems with Safari Browser](https://belovdigital.agency/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/normalize.webp)
Download the file from here and use it as a base when building a site on WordPress.
Update the browser
Are you surfing the internet using a recent version of Safari? It is a good practice to keep it up to date ( the same goes for your site, too ): for a better experience, your safety and more impressive performance indicators (how are yours? Check your site’s performance here ). The updates usually come with improvements since every day (if not every minute) something new gets found, and issues get resolved.
If your browser is outdated, you can update it doing the following:
- Click the Apple icon in the top left corner;
- Select System Preferences;
- You’ll see the Software Update option – that’s the one;
- The latest version will be under More info;
- Check the version and click Install now.
After the installation finishes, your browser will be updated.
You can also visit Browse Happy for the most recent versions of all major browsers.

Hard refresh
A hard refresh (or a force refresh) reaches deeper than the regular one. It forces your browser to load everything anew. On hard refresh, instead of loading the cached version of your WordPress site, the browser will load the information from the server. It helps if the cache you’ve stored were outdated.
To perform it in a Safari browser, you will need to press Apple + R or Cmd + R.
Another option is to clear that data manually: the instructions are right below.
Clear cache
It is as simple as doing three clicks:
- Go to the Safari drop-down menu;
- Select Empty Cache;
- Confirm by clicking Empty.
By doing this, you’ll ensure your browser loads the latest version of the page available.
In some cases, the cache that prevents your page from loading is a network-level cache. This type of cache is what your internet provider uses to speed up the loading process. You can load the website you’re trying to access from a different location . If it’s working that way but is still down when accessed from your computer, your issue is in the network-level cache. It will clear on its own in a little while. If it doesn’t, consider contacting your provider to resolve the issue. The most reliable providers won’t keep you waiting for long.
Enable JavaScript
WordPress sites use JavaScript for lots of things. Your pages related to e-commerce or editors will not load if you have JavaScript disabled in your browser.
It can be disabled because of some extensions like antiviruses or ad blockers. To enable it:
- Go to the main drop-down menu;
- Select Preferences;
- Go to the Security tab;
- Check the Enable JavaScript box;
- Load the page again.
If the reason for the issue was the JavaScript block, everything should work properly now.
Work around the government or provider-imposed block
Some websites are blocked on a certain territory or by a provider. Normally, in such cases, you see the message describing the reason for it. You have two options to bypass the restrictions: VPN or Tor.
VPN is a virtual private network that makes your location invisible. You can set it up by downloading it and installing as provided in the instructions they give you. Some of the well-known free ones are Hotspot Shield and ProtonVPN , while ExpressVPN and NordVPN are popular premium options for users looking for more advanced features and enhanced security.
Tor is a browser that will ensure your anonymity. Install it and try to access the website you couldn’t load.

Restrictions in interaction
Third-party cookies.
If you frequently experience such an issue as being logged out from your WordPress account, it may be the result of having third-party cookies disabled. Websites use cookies to store some information, and third-party cookies, as the name implies, are the ones other parties (e.g., providers or advertisers) use. If they are disabled, you may have trouble posting, liking other posts, or leaving comments to them.
To enable them:
- Open the main menu (top left corner);
- Go to the Privacy tab;
- In the Cookies and website data section, select Allow all * or set it only for the WordPress site you’re accessing now ( Manage Website Data ).
It is safe to add WordPress.com (as well as WordPress.org ) to the allowed sites.
*You can reset it back to the Always block later if you have security concerns.
Website tracking
The same issues (like being frequently logged out ) can be fixed by enabling cross-site tracking. Again, websites use it to store the necessary data about your previous activity on their pages, and preventing cross-site tracking will interfere with the site operation.
Check if you have it working correctly in the same Privacy tab from above. Make sure the Ask websites not to track me box is unchecked*.
Those are the most common ways to resolve your issues when loading a WordPress site or interacting with posts from your WordPress account. Hope our advice helped you find your way out!
