Musically on Frontiers , the band made a concerted effort to move away from (albeit very slightly) the consistent, commercial formula which they had forged over their recent previous albums. However, they may have chosen the wrong direction in which to deviate from the pop/rock sound, primarily by making this album more synth-heavy than anything previously. Although he had emerged as the band’s chief songwriter, Jonathan Cain has a bit over the overall vibe with his keyboard work, and it caused some missed opportunities with the album’s sound. Further, bassist Ross Valory abandoned his unique, fret-less buzz which he had mastered on Escape for a more traditional rhythm sound. This would be Valory’s final album with Journey for over a decade, as he and drummer Steve Smith were replaced in 1985, only to return for the Journey mid-nineties reunion a decade later.

Left out of the final cut of the album was the future hit “Only the Young”, which eventually appeared on the soundtrack to the 1985 film Vision Quest and reached the Top Ten. This song is dominated by a consistent, almost-acoustic riff, a strong rhythm, guitar textures and vocal melodies along with with a striking message – “only the young can say they’re free to fly away…” – which shows just how talented Journey can be when all the elements are maximized.

Sequentially, the album is quite out of balance, with all five songs from the original first side released as singles (and all becoming radio hits), while none of the five from side two received any significant radio play. “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” starts things off, with Cain’s keyboard riff biting and eerie, like if Pink Floyd went pop. This couples with Schon’s rifle-sharp guitar track during the song proper to make for a very powerful and driving rhythm. Written in early 1982, “Separate Ways” is the oldest composition on the album and it peaked at #8 on the charts, making it the highest charting hit on the album. The calm “Send Her My Love” follows as the album’s first ballad. The song is built on a bluesy piano riff which is accented brilliantly by subtle guitar licks and some swelling sonic textures from all directions. Perry’s melody is left to carry the tune pretty much throughout until it breaks into more intense outro led by Schon’s lead guitar.

The middle of side one contains a couple of strong rockers. “Chain Reaction” is kind of boilerplate on the surface but is executed brilliantly by the band, giving it a unique edge. The rich vocal harmonies above this most guitar and riff heavy of tracks, gives it an air that it could have been an eighties hair metal classic if performed by the right group. “After the Fall” is a true pop gem, very rich and melodic throughout. This song is led by Perry’s vocals, which are at their absolute peak here, and brought out perfectly by the rest of band playing a reserved, supporting role. In between the vocals, the guitar and keyboard harmonized riff acts as a perfect counter-melody and “After the Fall” is one of the few tracks on the album where Valory’s bass is clear and up-front. The real highlight of the song is the commencement of third verse, which demonstrates how pure performance can overtake lack of fresh lyrics.

The first side concludes with “Faithfully”, the all-time, ultimate “power ballad”. While very slow and deliberate, the song packs a mighty punch, especially as it builds towards a perfect climax at the end. Written solely by Cain, the “rolling” piano riff was inspired by the sound of wheels constantly present while traveling on tour, with the simple lyrical message of keeping a relationship together while touring in a rock band. While the song is totally Cain’s in composition, the performance is carried mainly by Perry and Schon and this hit song reached #12 on the charts.

The second side is much less even than the first. “Edge of the Blade” sounds like it falls about ten minutes short of the hour, in both composition and production. While there are some good individual elements to this song, as a whole it doesn’t work at the quality we expect from Journey. “Troubled Child” is a bit better, although built on rather cheesy synths (which otherwise might have been some good riffing). The song has a dark and soulful core and is a bit off-beat, which makes it interesting. Drummer Smith added a strong enough drum pattern to take a songwriting credit for “Back Talk”, a song which takes an almost-Van-Halen-like approach musically and sounds like it would fit in perfectly with some type of theatre production lyrically. The title song “Frontiers” is the weakest song on the album and may be as close to filler as you’ll hear on a Journey album.

The closer “Rubicon” is the only true gem on the second side. Musically choppy and moody but lyrically inspired (this could have been a theme for a Rocky film), the song possesses a great theme and concept which, even while very synth heavy, makes it feel like a true rock anthem which could have existed in many eras.

At the top of their commercial game after the success of Frontiers , Journey made a common mistake – they took too much time off and got lost from the musical scene. Perry did put out a very successful solo album called Street Talk in 1984, and the band released a songs for Soundtrack albums (including “Only the Young”) during that time period. But by the time the band returned for their next studio album, Raised on Radio in 1986 (without Valory and Smith), it was clear that the golden age of the band was over.

ANTHRAX Singer JOEY BELLADONNA To Relaunch His JOURNEY Tribute Band With Three Shows In December

ANTHRAX singer Joey Belladonna will relaunch his JOURNEY tribute band called BEYOND FRONTIERS (formerly JOEY BELLADONNA'S BEYOND THE BAND and JOURNEY BEYOND ) with three East Coast shows in December. The dates are as follows:

Dec. 28 – Worcester, MA @ Palladium Dec. 29 - Poughkeepsie, NY @ The Chance Dec. 30 - Hampton Beach, NH @ Wally's

A year and a half ago, Belladonna spoke to "The Johnny Dare Morning Show" about his JOURNEY tribute, which also features keyboardist Doug Carter , bassist Paul Arntz , guitarist Matt Basford and drummer Justin Ward .

"We're working on some recordings so we can be like a normal band and put stuff up on the site — maybe do a video," Joey said. "We've got interest in playing shows. We're just trying to figure out when and how, that kind of thing. The band's still together. We record at home. Everybody's all in different places at the moment. We only did one show, so we can't wait to do it again, 'cause it's gonna be fun."

Belladonna also touched upon his reasons for launching a JOURNEY tribute band, saying: "People ask why the hell I do it. I just like the songs. I've liked the band forever. And I just wanted to do it because I think it's a cool challenge and it's just fun music. I can't think of many bands that I'd like to do a whole evening of without trying to dress up and do everything they do. We just wanna be a band that plays that music. I don't care about the whole lookalike-type stuff. It's just about music. That's really all it is."

In an April 2020 interview with SiriusXM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" , Belladonna stated about his approach to singing material that was originally written and recorded by Steve Perry : "Obviously, when you do [something like this], there's always open ground for [people to say], 'You didn't do that part, 'You didn't do this.' [But] I didn't wanna copy it note for note. Sometimes I just like to do my own thing with it. Represent it and do what you can, but I love to mess around with things. Not so much to try to be too different, but just make it cool and do it your own way versus trying to get every note. I'm sure some guys study every second of it. Even with ANTHRAX , I do songs different a lot of times. It's just fun that way. To do things off the cuff is fun for me versus trying to follow everything… I can study it all day, but I just don't feel like doing that. I wanna have a little fun doing my own thing with it."

Belladonna 's JOURNEY tribute made its live debut in March 2020 at The Beacon Theatre in Hopewell, Virginia.

When he is not busy touring and recording with ANTHRAX , Belladonna has been spending time playing drums and singing for a classic-rock covers band called CHIEF BIG WAY . The upstate New York-based group, which also features Dave Mickelson on bass, Joe Precourt on guitar and John Goodwin on keyboards, plays versions of songs from JOURNEY , AC/DC , ZZ TOP , BOSTON , CHEAP TRICK , FOREIGNER , PINK FLOYD , VAN HALEN , COLLECTIVE SOUL , THE WHO , THE DOORS , SHINEDOWN and BON JOVI , among others.

In a 2005 interview with MusicDish , Belladonna was asked about the rumor that he came to the table with a JOURNEY tune during his 1985 audition for ANTHRAX . "Actually, what happened was I went into the room and they said, 'Just go on in,' and they hadn't heard me sing," he said. "They'd heard of me and they asked me to come in, but we were going in to start tracking and stuff, to get the mic set up and all that and they said, 'Let's get you in there and get you warmed up.' I hit the mic and belted out some JOURNEY … I think it was [the song] 'Lights' . I didn't know what the hell I was getting into in the first place. I just wanted to lay some vocals or something. Just to kinda give an idea and that's what happened. It wasn't really anything more than that. I just kinda belched it out. I think I did 'Oh Sherrie' [written by Steve Perry ], too, or something. I dunno why, but I just did. It was something off the top of my head I could do a cappella and it was kinda challenging. I thought maybe in range or something that would be kind of intriguing. It was definitely one they weren't expecting."

ANTHRAX 's 2013 EP "Anthems" EP included the band's cover version of JOURNEY 's "Keep On Runnin'" alongside classics by RUSH , THIN LIZZY , AC/DC , CHEAP TRICK and BOSTON .

Exploring the frontiers of lignin science: A journey to MAX IV Laboratory

In December 2023, the SmartRecovery project gave us a unique opportunity to embark on a journey to Lund, Sweden to visit the MAX IV laboratory to give us a better understanding of lignin.

The SmartRecovery project is a collaborative research initiative between VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University, supported by industry partners. The project aims to support Finnish industries in the shift to bio-based solutions by enabling lignin commercialization and market entry of new lignin-based products. Lignin, a by-product of pulping, has traditionally been burned for its high heating value, but its potential in the market is much more versatile. An integral part of this Business Finland funded project is the development of a novel approach to recover lignin from biorefinery side streams with a defined morphology, which is expected to improve its applicability in various products like coatings and energy storage applications. This initiative is part of the broader goal to replace fossil materials with biobased alternatives, addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and waste management.

The SmartRecovery project team heading to Lund comprised of seven enthusiastic scientists, Patrik Ahvenainen and Paavo Penttilä from Aalto University, Miriam Kellock, Stefania Bertella and Jonathan Berg from VTT and Olesya Fearon and Risto Hänninen from Fortum Bio2x, united by our curiosity and the shared goal of pushing the boundaries of knowledge. At this time of the year the cold winds of Lund carry with them the promise of scientific discovery as we embarked on a fascinating journey to the MAX IV Laboratory, a beacon of cutting-edge research and innovation. Our mission: to make the invisible visible by unlocking the secrets of lignin on a minuscule scale.

How to make the invisible visible

The first day at MAX IV we were greeted by the by the facility's experienced staff. As we familiarized ourselves with the ways of working at MAX IV, lab protocols, and safety instructions, we were also given first row tickets to learn about the synchrotron radiation process—a beam of light produced by electrons moving at nearly the speed of light. This beam, of X-rays, would become our tool for making the invisible in lignin visible.

Our standout memory was the experimental session at the CoSAXS beamline, which is a state-of-the-art multipurpose Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) instrument. We dedicated most of our time to the facilities designated for this beamline, where we worked tirelessly in shifts to collect comprehensive data for our future research endeavors. Like every journey, ours had its highs and lows. Despite encountering a few obstacles along the way, we prevailed thanks to the invaluable assistance of the beamline crew, especially Pablo Mota-Santiago and Tomás Plivelic . In addition, a special acknowledgement to the well-equipped vending machines with 24/7 food service getting us through the evening and night shifts!

After an intense 24-hour period of nonstop runs, we were satisfied with the collected data and look forward to analyzing the results back in Finland. By tracking changes in particle size, shape, and arrangement over time, in situ SAXS gives us important information about how lignin particles form. This understanding is key to improving the properties and performance of materials based on lignin. Moreover, using in situ SAXS to study lignin particle formation not only improves our understanding of how lignin self-assembles, but also helps us design lignin-based materials with specific features and uses.

When reflecting back on our journey it has become evident that MAX IV isn’t just a hub for scientific inquiry; it is a demonstration of human curiosity and the relentless pursuit of understanding. The collaborative atmosphere, coupled with the cutting-edge technology, created an environment where discoveries seemed inevitable. As we exited MAX IV, it had not only expanded our understanding of lignin but had also fueled our passion for pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

Whether it is the textile industry, construction, or energy storage, entire industrial energy efficient value chain can utilise renewable and re-usable materials profitably, with the help of science.

"Whether it's a real photo or not, the impacts are still huge," she told the ABC.

About 50 girls from Bacchus Marsh Grammar in Melbourne are right now dealing with the aftermath of having their images used to create fake AI-generated pornography, which was shared on Instagram and Snapchat. 

Experts say image abuse using deepfake porn is likely to get worse, and it's not just AI sophistication that's enabling the behaviour.

Youth advocates and educators have found increased exposure to misogynistic messages and degrading content online is "crushing" the empathy of young people.

And what began as a revival of "make me a sandwich" jokes, has led to tech being weaponised to tell women, "I'm going to put you in your place. I'm going to humiliate you". 

'I would be absolutely wrecked'

Brenna, a Year 10 student from Victoria, found the news about the Bacchus Marsh Grammar students this week confronting.

She said sexual abuse and gendered mistreatment in the school environment was common. 

But she was shocked by the scale of the incident, and that someone her age could even consider that kind of abuse.

"I found it really hard to hear," she told the ABC.

"It's really tragic that people included in this could be people I meet on the street, and people my age. My heart goes out to them. 

"I know how I would feel if this happened to me. I would be absolutely wrecked."

Revenge porn is when someone shares, or threatens to share, an intimate image or video of a person without their consent.

Deepfake porn involves the use of AI to create a nude or sexual image of a person doing or saying things they haven't said or done.

In the case of the Bacchus Marsh students, their faces were purportedly taken from social media sites before being manipulated using AI to make "obscene photographs", police said.

Daniel Principe, a youth advocate and educator, said not a week goes by without a school contacting him saying they have come across these kinds of challenges.

Whether it's students sharing inappropriate deepfake images, telling rape jokes, making misogynistic comments, or creating lists that humiliate women. 

Mr Principe, who has held workshops with more than 35,000 schoolboys across Australia, said it's not an isolated issue — it's happening at all types of schools. 

"This isn't a single school or a type of school, this comes back to our culture right now," he told the ABC.

"I would say it has become very pornified, and very much embedding this dominant narrative around male power and entitlement to women's bodies."

Making sexist jokes for TikTok 'likes'

New research by the eSafety Commission has found that engaging with online influencers is a key way that young men shape their identities.

But a small number of dangerous voices are dominating online conversations about masculinity.

Commissioner Julie Inman Grant warned toxic role models were drowning out helpful discussions, and is calling for algorithms that promote the content to be more closely regulated.

"Like the cars that we drive every day that have embedded seatbelts and airbags, and anti-lock brakes that we take for granted," Ms Inman Grant said.

"We haven't forced these companies to put the virtual seatbelts and digital guardrails in, and we need to do that."

Mr Principe recently asked a group of boys why they think there's been a revival of sexist "get back to the kitchen" and "make me a sandwich" jokes.

They admitted to seeing it on TikTok, saying "influencers are doing it for likes".

An older boy even described the behaviour as a "backlash".

"He said it's because they have seen a lot of advocating for women and women's empowerment, and it's a backlash," Mr Principe said.  

Ms Payne also says young people are responding to a culture of masculinity, with students telling her inappropriate images are shared to look "cool".

"It's wrapped up in gender stereotypes around masculinity and needing to look like you have power, or you've 'got the rizz' which is what the kids say – that you're able to have sexual relationships," she said.

Teaching empathy 

While there have been growing calls for tech companies to step-up, and debate around banning social media for under 16-year-olds, Mr Principe says "we can’t just legislate our way through this".

"We've unleashed these massive social experiments on young people," he said.

"It's not their fault. Yes, there needs to be accountability, but they didn't create these digital platforms and devices we've given them, yet they have to navigate them."

There's cybersafety, consent, and respectful relationships education in place in schools, which he encourages but says it's not enough to cut through.

He said there needs to be more understanding of what shapes attitudes, and approaches that help boys unpack the messages they receive about masculinity and sex.

"A man who assaults an unconscious woman knows she's not consenting," Mr Principe said. 

"Clearly, there's something more than a lack of understanding of consent."

Through their work, both Mr Principe and Ms Payne try to take students on a journey and put them in someone else's shoes to bring back a sense of empathy for each other. 

"I think that's our biggest task. How do we encourage a healthier culture of empathy, care and respect? That transcends consent," Mr Principe said. 

"We also have to show them empathy and respect, and give them opportunities to think critically about this." 

Students want better support

Year 10 student Brenna says young women are often struggling to find the right support.

And some are even unable to acknowledge and define sexual assault, describing it as "a foggy area".

"There are respectful relationship classes, which are dotted throughout the year, but nothing feels like it's strongly included in the school environment," she said.

"I see a great deal of potential in teachers having more in-depth training on how to address cases of sexual abuse and gender mistreatment.

"There are some teachers who are very well equipped to handle this kind of thing ... But there are some who just don't have that."

Ms Payne said technology is moving so fast that often teachers are not even aware of deepfake technology, or they shy away from it.

"In turn, it means that young people don't want to turn to the adults in their life because they don't think they know how to deal with it," she said.

"It means you end up with young people dealing with sextortion or image-based abuse alone because they don't think any adults can help."

When she experienced image-based abuse at age 13, she was blamed and "felt completely alone".

"I didn't know how to talk to friends, school, family," she said. 

She stressed the importance of creating more spaces for young people to have conversations and ask questions.

"Where they can fully understand consent and have the education before they need to use it – before it's too late."
