Tolo, Greece – A Complete Travel Guide

Tolo, Greece is at the heart of one of the most storied provinces of Greece. On a recent trip to beautiful Tolo, in the Argolid, we explored some of the most exciting sights in Greece. The landscape and the food of the northern Peloponnese are also spectacular.

Where is Tolo, Greece

Tolo, Greece – population 2500 in summer – is that idyllic beach town you’ve been dreaming about. With the soul of simple fishing village, Tolo (Tolon) is at the heart of a culturally rich region of Greece – full of archaeological sites and natural treasures.

Tolo is located south of Athens, on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese, in Argolis (Argolida). This is one of the most interesting regions of Greece, culturally and historically. Tolo is also an excellent place for family holidays – in the middle of a wealth of sights and activities. The Tolo beaches are beautiful, and there are little islands to boat out to -perfect for both relaxation and water sports. This spot in the Peloponnese is also a great jumping off point for exploring other gorgeous destinations. Glamorous Porto Heli is a little over an hour away. From there, the islands of the Saronic Gulf, like the elite island of Spetses and ultra-cultured Hydra are a very short ride away.

Tolo is also very close to historic and charming Nafplio – it’s just a 15 minute drive. This is also the perfect place to stay if you want to visit some of the most historic and impressive sights of Ancient Greece. The Asklepion and the ancient theater of Epidaurus are a half an hour to the northwest from Tolon. The archaeological site of Mycenae (Mykines) is also just half an hour from Tolo, to the north.

Our Travel Bloggers Greece visit to Tolo was an ideal introduction to the region. After the initial lockdown of 2020, we were very interested to see what the future of Greece travel would hold. We were delighted with the professionalism and dedicated to responsible, safe tourism that we met with in Tolo.

How to Get to Tolo, Argolida

Tolo is in the northeastern corner of the Peloponnese, on the Argolic Gulf. It’s an easy distance from Athens. On a drive of less than two hours, you’ll see some lovely sights. The road hugs the shores of the Saronic gulf for the first half of the ride. You then reach the Isthmus of Corinth and the Corinth Canal (captured here by Tzina of Love for Travel ), dividing the Peloponnese from the Attica peninsula.

It’s also very easy to reach Tolon by bus. There are many KTEL public buses every day that connect Athens with Tolo. You can see schedules here.

The Isthmus of Corinth and the Corinth Canal

The isthmus of Corinth is a narrow neck of land dividing the Peloponnese from the Attica peninsula. It was also a landmark in the ancient world. An ancient stele marked the division between Attica and the Peloponnese. The 2nd century AD philosopher and biographer Plutarch attributed the stele to Theseus, son of King Aegeus of Athens. Plutarch said Theseus had placed the stele there on his journey to Athens.

The ancient Greeks had long thought of a canal to avoid the long trip around the Peloponnese, but they were never successful. Near the present day canal is an ancient stone pathway – the Diolkos. This was used for dragging ships overland from the Saronic Gulf to the Gulf of Corinth. The Canal of Corinth was finally dug at the end of the 19th century (1893). The Corinth Canal is a dramatic sight. It’s 6.4 kilometers long, and extremely deep and narrow (just 21 meters wide).

The Corinth Canal makes an interesting stop on the journey to Tolo from Athens. Huge ships cannot pass, but you will usually see pleasure vessels and smaller craft making the crossing far below the narrow bridge that crosses it.

The Bay of Tolo (Tolon)

The Bay of Tolo, Greece is part of the Argolic Gulf. Tolo bay is enclosed, with calm waters. There are views of the close small island of Romvi and the even closer enchanting Koronisi, with its chapel. It’s lit up at night beautifully.

The Bay of Tolo has shallow calm seas, and a very long and narrow sand beach. Many small boats are anchored just offshore and fill the bay with charm.

The shore is dotted with charming traditional fish tavernas, with their tables right in the sand at the water’s edge.

Things to Do in Tolo, Greece

So close to Athens, but with all the charm of a quiet beach side town far from the cares of the world, Tolo is close to many significant archaeological sites and cultural destinations. Tolo itself also offers plenty of things to do, starting of course with the great sandy beaches of Tolo

Tolo Beaches

The bay of Tolo faces southwest into the larger Saronic gulf. Enclosed and protected, the beaches of Tolo offer some excellent swimming and lounging.

Psili Ammos Beach, Tolo

The northern section for the main beach that runs all along the coast of Tolo bay is the widest. It’s called “Psili Ammos” – fine sand. This silky, sandy beach was awarded a Blue Flag for the excellence of its waters, its condition and cleanliness, and its commitment to the environment. It’s one of five beaches in Argolis awarded with a blue flag – four of which, like Tolo, are in the Municipality of Nafplio.

The rest of the long beach of Tolo is clean and shallow. Because it’s in an enclosed bay, the waters are often calm. Tolo beach is a terrific family swimming beach, a three-minute walk from many hotels. Since it’s a town beach, you’ll be able to find anything you need within easy reach, from sunscreen to fried Calamari. There are a few quiet beach side cafes with sun loungers and umbrellas. But there were no loud beach bars to disturb the lazy tranquility of an ideal beach afternoon.

Kastraki Beach – Paralia Assinis

Just to the east, in its own little cove, is the more secluded Kastraki beach. The beach is half sandy, and half pebbles, with very clear waters. There’s a little taverna on the beach, and a few sun loungers and straw umbrellas. You can reach Kastraki beach on foot easily, but note that the road has no shoulder so you must be careful and also not make the trip on foot after dusk. This is also called Assini Beach, as its right below the ruins of Ancient Assini.

Plaka Beach (Drepano Beach)

A little more to the east – past the cape of Ancient Assini – there is a long stretch of beach. This is called Plaka or Drepano Beach, as it’s right by the small village of Drepano. The beaches are quiet and have more locals and Athenians than tourists. You’ll find some small family tavernas and a few sun loungers. There’s a campground by the beach.

Vivari Beach

Just 7 kilometers east of Tolo is a magical little bay. It’s almost completely enclosed, like a lagoon. With a few trees for natural shade, and a few sunbeds for relaxing, this is a little paradise. If you walk a little, there are one or two little ocves for even more seclusion. Locals enjoy the beachside tavernas here.

Kondyli Beach (Kontili Beach)

Further east – 10 km from Tolo and 3 km from Vivari, is the longer and somewhat more crowded Kondyli beach. Kondyli beach is in the southeastern curve of the bay. The southern edge of the beach is said to be nudism-friendly. The northern edge of the beach has beep waters.

Karathonas Beach

To the west of Tolo, in the direction of Nafplion, is Karathonas beach. It’s very close by boat, but about 20 minutes by bar as the road goes inland. This large beach offers watersports, beach bars with sunbeds and umbrellas, and tavernas – perfect for a sociable day at the beach.

The Islands of Tolo – Daskaleio, Romvi, and Koronisi

There are three little islands in the Bay of Tolo. They make wonderful destinations for day trip excursion by sea.

Koronisi Island, Tolo

Koronisi is the tiny island directly across from the port of Tolo. This charming green island has a small church – Agioi Apostoli – Holy Apostles. It’s a popular place for weddings and baptisms, and a wonderful sight in the sunset.

Romvi Island

The larger island of Romvi is just to the south. This more mountainous island is shaped like a boomerang, concealing the smaller Daskaleio island in its own private bay.

Daskaleio Island

The tiny island of Daskaleio has a secret. Hidden from view from the mainland by the larger Romvi island, this was the site of a “secret school” (“Daskalo” means ‘teacher’ in Greek). During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, there were many secret schools set up in remote locations, where children could have religious instruction and learn Greek language and history, preserving their heritage.

The secret school on Daskaleio was in the beautiful monastery of Zoodochou Pigi – ‘Life Giving Spring’ – built in 1688. You can hike up to the church on a day trip to the island. The views of the gulf are marvelous.

Take a Cruise to Daskaleio Island by Romvi

You know that fantasy of jumping off of a sailboat into deep jade-green sea in a secluded cove? The tiny island of Daskaleio, by Romvi, is the place where you can do that. This is one of the uninhabited islands in the snug Bay of Tolo. We reached it on a cruise with Tolo Sailing , while others of our group came with Intro Dive – like it sounds, they also give great first-time diving experiences. This is a great opportunity to try some water sports in a stunning location.

While on Romvi, we swam, hiked up to a beautiful and silent church, swam some more, and had an excellent barbecue. Our hosts at the John and George Hotel arranged the experience for us. They regularly arrange such excursions for their guests. At a cost of €25 – €30, including a fabulous lunch, it’s definitely one of the best things to do while you’re staying in Tolo.

Visit Ancient Assini

At the edge of Tolo, Greece is Ancient Assini. This beautiful spot in the Argolid has fortifications high above the sea. Ancient Assini was the port of Mycenae. Homer refers to the Assinians in The Iliad , for their part in the war with Troy .

The sight captured the imagination of King Gustav of Sweden, who was inspired by Heinrich Schliemann, the archaeologist of Ancient Mycenae. King Gustav of Sweden began excavations in 1922.

Assini has reached immortality both in history and in literature, in the poem “The King of Assini” by the Nobel Prize winning poet Giorgos Seferis .

Agia Kyriaki

At a perfect spot on the hill beside Ancient Assini, the Church of Agia Kyriaki is pristine blue and white overlooks Tolo Bay and the islands. This is a popular location for weddings and baptisms.

Stroll around Nafplion, Greece on a Day Trip from Tolo

Tolo is just 10 km from Nafplio. This lovely city was the first capital of Modern Greece, Nafplio has an island fortress – Bourtzi – a beautiful town square, the high Palamidi fortress, and an old town awash in color with bougainvillea in bloom.

Visit the Monastery of the Panagia/Zoodochou Pigis – Aghia Moni

A lovely Byzantine monastery from the 12th century is just outside of Tolo. The Monastery of Aghia Moni, set on a hill of Cypress trees and wildflowers, overlooks the bay. Just below the monastery is a sacred spring, used – according to Mythology – by Hera, after her romantic trysts.

Historic Sights for Day Trips around Tolo, Greece

Argolida is rich in history and archaeology. Tolo is near some of the most fascinating sights of both Ancient Greece and – even earlier – Mycenaen Greece. This is the Greece of our collective imagination – the Greece of Homer, of Agamemnon, and of ships bound for Troy . It’s also the home of one of the greatest theaters of Classical Greece, where the works of Aeschylus and Aristophanes still play, and of one of the most famous healing centers of the Ancient World .

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus

The Theater of Epidaurus is one of the world’s most famous theaters as well as one of the most significant archaeological sights in Greece. This vast theater – with a capacity of about 13,000 viewers – is famous for its acoustics. Even from the lofty top rows, the words on center stage resonate.

For the best experience, visit the Archaeological sight by day to wonder at its construction and beauty. Then come again to see a show – an ancient drama or comedy.

The Theater of Epidaurus was part of the healing center – the Asklepion. The performances here were not conceived of as entertainment but as an integral part of the patients’ well-being, spiritual and psychological health.

The Asklepion of Epidaurus

Asklepius, son of Apollo, was the Ancient Greek god of healing. His staff, entwined with a snake, remains to day a universal symbol of healing.

In the world of Ancient Greece, healing centers took his name – Asklepion. There were many, and the one at Epidaurus was the most famous of them all. This was the mythological birthplace of Asklepius. The Asklepion at Epidaurus was one of the most significant cult sites of Ancient Greece. This vast archaeological complex includes the ruins of the great Doric temple to Aesclepius, the Tholon – dedicated to his cult, the Abaton – or Enkymmytron – where patients slept for Asklepius to come to them in their dreams, a stadium for athletic competition, the hestiatorion, library, baths, and many other structures. 

The Museum at Ancient Epidaurus

A visit to the on-site museum at Ancient Epidaurus will give added insight into this tremendous ancient healing center. The museum displays fascinating findings from the site. Among these are medical instruments and surgical tools, evidence of the extraordinarily advanced care patient could receive at the Asklepion of Epidaurus.

Ancient Mycenae

Ancient Mycenae has been capturing the imagination of scholars, travels, and poets for centuries. The amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann was famously convinced that in the Homeric epics there was history and truth, and he found it. At Mycenae, Archaeology and Myth collide, as Schliemann’s findings confirmed a synergy with Homer’s tale. At any rate, standing in the Treasury of Atreus, the famous beehive tomb, it is easy too believe you are in the resting place of Agamemnon. The tomb of Clytemestra is also here, as well as the Lions Gate, the great acropolis, shaft graves, and astonishing Cyclopean walls all aound.

The Museum at Ancient Mycenae

The Museum of Ancient Mycenae displays wonderful findings from the excavation. The objects are arranged in such a way as to support an understandable narrative, leading to a deeper understanding of Mycenaen culture. Highlights include figurines of religious idols, including Gaia the earth goddess, a magnificent fresco of two Mycenaen women and a Minoan woman, and elaborate jewelry. A highlight, of course, is a replica of what is famously called the “Mask of Agamemnon.” The original is in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Where to Stay in Tolo

There are many excellent family hotels in Tolo. Our Tolo hotel – the John and George Hotel – the finest among them, with very high guest ratings. We loved the sweeping views of Tolo Bay from our elegant room, and the spacious pool deck below, along with poolside breakfast. The service was exceptional.

Paradise Lost , Tolo is another fine Tolo hotel, with a gorgeous pool and tropical garden, and lovely views.

Our visit was one of the first after the lockdown. We stayed here with great peace of mind – all safety and hygiene standards were strictly maintained. There was sanitizer all over, plexiglass at the check-in, and all servers were wearing masks. We had masks and sanitizing wipes in our rooms. At breakfast, we had service at the buffet from wait staff who were wearing face shields, and everyone always maintained a careful distance.

Where to Dine in Tolo

Tolo has excellent dining. Here on the shores of the clean Bay of Tolo, there’s a great variety of excellent fish and seafood. We had elegant and creative dishes as we overlooked the gulf: classic crisp fried fish and salads as we sat with our feet in the sand. We also enjoyed delicious grilled meats in the countryside. There are high-quality family-style tavernas on the shore. Our favorites were Ormos and Akrogiali . On the main street of the town overlooking the bay is Maria’s, and by the beach the excellent restaurant at the Golden Beach Hotel. The food everywhere was superb, including classic favorites and beautifully inventive dishes that were nonetheless true to their traditional roots. Tolo, Greece Weather

Greece is famous for exceptional weather. But even by those standards, Tolo and the surrounding region stand out, for mild winters of sunshine. Even the rainiest month – December – sees rain on just a dozen days. The heat of summer is tempered by sweet breezes.

Tolo: how a small village in argolida transformed into a top destination.

Just 145km away from Athens city centre, Tolo is a great destination both for your summer holidays and for mini getaways before the first autumn rains. Departing from the capital, it will take you about two hours to reach it and find yourself on amazing beaches, having avoided cramped ferries and long waits.

The majority of the inhabitants of Tolo are of Cretan origin. Its land was granted to Cretan refugees who fled their island in an attempt to escape the fury of the Turkish conquerors. For several decades Tolo was a poor fishing village with tiny plots and houses. Children would walk to school from Tolo to Nafplio barefoot. However, all this gradually changed in the 1960s, when performances at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus turned into a meeting point for the rich and famous. It was the era of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis, whose fame brought American, French and Italian yachts to Greece. Looking for a quiet place to moor their yachts, they discovered picturesque Tolo with its crystal clear waters, fresh fish and friendly inhabitants.

Slowly, Tolo gained fame; outdoor toilets were converted into rental rooms, locals would rent half of their house to tourists, while their families lived in one single room and, thus, little by little, the first tourist accommodations appeared. In the following decades, with a peak in the 1980s, Tolo went from zero to hero very quickly. It became a top tourist destination with numerous fish taverns by the sea and five legendary discos that would stay up late until dawn. It may have experienced a slight downturn since the mid-1990s, but it has long since bounced back dynamically, in response to travellers’ need for “slow travel”, relaxing, hassle-free holidays, good food and clean seas. Greek art shops, sophisticated boutiques and restaurants with great gastronomic aspirations are what make Tolo stand out from the neighbouring settlements. It should be noted that the Danish Canoe Kayak Team, which visits Tolo twice a year for training, has its boats here.

Journalist and advisor to the President of Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation – ERT S.A. Lina Papadaki has been bombarding me since spring about Tolo and my curiosity has been piqued. For she always talks with such love and passion about its history and the warm hospitality of the locals that stems from their Cretan origin; about “the most delicious and fresh fish and –if you’re lucky- slipper lobster that you will hardly find elsewhere”; about the beautiful beach with its crystal clear waters and the one-day excursions to the three amazing islets spread out in the picturesque bay; about the fact that “here you will have the most relaxing holiday ever”.

Games and sports activities enjoyed by all

No need to rush or plan anything

Lina, an avid fan and local, constantly posts photos of amazing waters and continues to convert me: “the best time of the day is early in the morning, going down to the beach when everyone is still asleep, the sound of the sea and the colours of the sunrise are simply splendid, the breeze is incredible”, and she continues, “know that Tolo is wonderful all year round, even in winter, but you will enjoy it most in June or September, when Psili Ammos resembles those huge blue lake of the Italian North”, she stresses, “start from the pier and walk to Ancient Assini, but walk barefoot in the sand to feel the energy of the earth, take a dip in Kastraki first and then return”, and also, “take the boat that takes you to Spetses, Hydra, Monemvasia and Nafplio. Between Tolo and Spetses, if you are lucky, you will see pods of dolphins giving an amazing show next to the boat”, she concludes. Unable to resist any longer, I packed a couple of clothes, two swimsuits, a pair of flip-flops and a towel and set off for Tolo.

My day in Tolo started idly. There is no need to rush or make plans. Here everything is close by, cafes, beach, taverns and bars are all ten minutes away. Breakfast is offered by numerous cafés around the village, such as Esperando on Sekeri Street serving sweet and savoury crepes, waffles and nice cappuccino. You might even want to come back in the evening for cocktails and delicious pizza. For a coffee with a sea view, go to Ippocampus, overlooking the entire bay of Tolo and the teeny-tiny island of Koronissi.

Psili Ammos

My next appointment is with the beach of Psili Ammos that stretches in front of the village. Note that many of the accommodations are right on the beach. You put on your swimsuit, grab your towel, walk down the steps and…. into the water. Sea umbrellas, sunbeds and beach bars; Psili Ammos is fully serviced, yet there is also enough space for all of you who wish to simply lie down on your towel and enjoy the sun. If you are seeking for some privacy, go to Kastraki, located just before the archaeological site of Ancient Assini, a beautiful beach of fine shingle with clear blue waters. If you want, you can go even further and discover more beaches, as there are many in the area. Just after the cape of Ancient Assini, unfolds a long beach that stretches out to Drepano. In the same area, the beach of Plaka, where the legendary Triton campsite is located, has in recent years improved considerably, featuring nice beach bars and cafés. After Vivari, about twenty minutes from Tolo, Kondyli beach is one of the most beautiful in the area, large and pebbly, with incredible waters, and fully serviced. Very close by you will find the long and sandy beach of Kandia, where “Baraki” beach bar serves amazing margaritas –an ideal place for a late night by the beach. Iria beach, just after Kandia, also boasts excellent waters. The whole coastal area from Tolo to Iria is wonderful, with many lovely beaches.

Ancient Assini

And when you’ve had your fill of sun and sea and the smell of fried squid and grilled octopus leaves you drooling, head to “Romvi”, a fish and seafood tavern with tables on the sand. Overlooking Koronissi, “Steki” also features tables on the sand and is famous for its fresh local ingredients. Try their fried anchovies which are fiendishly delicious and as crispy as chips! For Mediterranean cuisine, Maria’s Restaurant in Boumboulinas Street easily competes with all those classy Athenian restaurants, while its wine cellar is exceptional. The restaurant’s elegant exterior is surrounded by beautiful bougainvillea trees, while there is also an impressive terrace right above the sea. Known among the locals as “Tsatsarakias”, “Neon” tavern is one of the oldest in Tolo, serving delicious casserole dishes and fine fried fish. “Karnagio”, the new entry in Sekeri Street, is housed in a beautiful stone building and serves Modern Greek cuisine on a comfortable wooden terrace with a thatch roof. “Leimonia” restaurant serves everything from meat and seafood to pizza in a lovely cool lawned garden with palms and mulberry trees. “Arkoudas” restaurant in Assini is particularly famous among meat-lovers. Try their grilled ribs and hand-cut French fries. “Nakos”, located in the very heart of Drepano, offers great casserole dishes and grilled meats.

Overlooking Koronissi

At night I find myself wandering the streets and beach of Tolo to discover its nightlife. Until the 1990s Tolo featured five discos and attracted many youths who would party until the break of dawn. Now the nightlife has moved to the coastal road between Nea Kios and Nafplio, but there are still plenty of bars for a casual drink. With breath-taking views of the entire bay and sophisticated tunes, “Kokkinos Vrahos” is the most iconic bar in the area. “Remember” and “Gorillas” boast beautiful summer settings and great cocktails by the sea, while “Barbaressa” often hosts Greek music nights attended by both British and Greek tourists.

Tolo may be ideal for a relaxing holiday, but that doesn’t mean it lacks sports and outdoor activities. The bay of Tolo is ideal for windsurfing, kite surfing and canoeing, and there are many water sports centres and diving schools. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover the wonderful seabed of Koronissi, Romvi and Daskalio, the three small islands in the bay of Tolo. Rent a boat from “Bik John” or “Telis” and tour the three small islands; discover Romvi’s hidden beach, Daskalio’s stunning waters and the rocky coastline and crystal clear waters of Koronissi.

Visit Ancient Assini in the late afternoon or early morning. It is about two kilometres from Tolo and can be reached by car or on foot. On the archaeological site there are findings from the Middle Helladic, Mycenaean, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Houses have been found, a Roman bath, a fruit press, etc., which testify to the glamour of the area in the past. A cultural centre has also been established in the area where various cultural events are held. The view from the site is unique. Another great route, much longer (about 8km), that goes through the famous orange groves of Argolida is the one starting from Tolo and leading to Nafplio. The route from Tolo to Vivari (about 6.5km) via the wetlands –where many herons, cormorants, ducks and swans find shelter- is also breathtakingly beautiful.

For fluffy bread, fresh pastry and excellent cakes go to Cleopatra’s bakery.

Panagiotis’ bakery in the neighbouring village of Assini is best known for its delicious cheese pies and freshly baked rusks.

Tolo is a former fishing village on the Peloponnese peninsula that has become a popular tourist destination. It has a rich history dating back to the time of Homer and was a safe haven for ships, including serving as a port for the Venetians during their war with the Ottomans. Founded as a settlement for Cretan refugees after the Greek Revolution, the town grew into a thriving fishing village and tourist town. Tolo boasts a stunning beach ideal for water sports, swimming, and fishing, as well as a lively atmosphere with tavernas and bars, making it a great holiday destination for families.

Tolo is located in the Argolida region on the Peloponnese peninsula, southwest of Athens, connected by the Isthmus of Corinth. The Peloponnese offers a glimpse into the past with its rugged mountains, coastal villages, and friendly locals, many of whose regions have unchanged boundaries since antiquity. The Argolida is easily accessible from Athens and is known for its citrus groves and historical sites such as Epidaurus, Asine, Tiryns, Mycenae, and Argos, which date back to the Mycenaean and Roman eras.

The best way to reach Tolo is by car, as the roads from Athens are good and well-marked. Alternatively, one can arrange for a private transfer or hire a driver. For budget-conscious travelers, taking the public bus from Athens to Nafplio, then changing for the bus to Tolo, is a cost-effective option with buses operating from early morning to early evening. Alternatively, a taxi from Nafplio to Tolo costs around 15€.

In Tolo, you have the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities, from exploring archaeological sites and historical landmarks to indulging in adventure sports like diving or water skiing, or discovering the local Greek cuisine, olive oil production, and wine-making techniques.

Discovering the Bay of Tolo by sailboat is one of the best ways to experience its beauty. Rent a sailboat with a skipper and enjoy a hassle-free day at sea. With a day charter, you can tour the nearby islands or opt for a 2-3 day hire to visit destinations such as Hydra, Spetses, and other islands in the vicinity.

You can take part in a group boating excursion to a neighboring island for a barbecue feast. Savor the laid-back atmosphere of the cruise, spend time at the beach swimming or snorkeling, and then relish in traditional Greek dishes such as grilled lamb or chicken, Greek salad, and tzatziki, all prepared by the skipper. The cost of the trip includes wine and beer.

The charming Agia Kyriaki Church is situated a mere 5 minutes' walk from the center of Tolo, atop a hill. The church is a quaint white-washed structure, offering stunning panoramic views of Romvi and Koronisi islands, the Bay of Tolo, and the surrounding coastline. The breathtaking vistas make the climb well worth it, however, if you prefer to drive, there's a small parking area available.

Tolo is renowned for its expansive sandy beaches, the most popular of which is Psili Ammos. Parking can be found along the main road or, if you prefer, it's a convenient walk from town.

For a more secluded beach experience, head to Kastraki. Located to the west of town near the ruins of Ancient Asine, Kastraki is a small pebbled beach with no amenities, so make sure to bring your own food and drinks.

In July 2020, my family and I travelled to Tolo. Tolo (Tolon) is a friendly beach town in the heart of the Argolid, the north-eastern corner of the  Peloponnese relatively near Athens.

Tolo, Greece

Built around the curve of a sheltered bay, Tolo’s impressive landscape features a long sandy beach and two pretty islets awaiting exploration at a short boat ride across the bay. A tempting array of hotels, cafés and small restaurants lines the beach and there are more in the village.

Although busy at weekends and in the high season, Tolo village has retained its charm. It is an excellent base to discover the famous ancient sites and food of the Peloponnese. Tolo is particularly recommended for families and kids of mixed ages as everyone will find plenty to do whatever their interests. 

Best Beaches in Tolo, Greece

The Beach of Tolo

The long sandy beach of Tolo is excellent for families, especially with young kids. The waters are calm, shallow and safe. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas and you will find many facilities on the beach.

Kastrakis is a smaller secluded beach with sand and pebbles located near the ruins of Ancient Asini. It has crystal clear waters with a sandy sea bed. The beach is not organized.

The (unorganized) beaches of the three islands in front of Tolo are pebbled with warm secluded crystal clear waters. Great for snorkelling and other water sports!

12 Top things to do in Tolo, Greece

Apart from its excellent family beaches and kid-friendly atmosphere, the sheer range of things you can see and do from Tolo is enormous. There is so much to see and do from Tolon that you may have trouble fitting it all in – at least if you want to leave some time for the beach!

Enjoy Water sports

Tolo is an excellent place for water activities, especially for beginners and kids, as it offers a safe, sheltered bay. 

Scuba diving, waters games such as banana rides are all possible at Tolo.

Take a Boat trip

A very popular activity in Tolo is a cruise around the bay, down the coast or to the back of Romvi island with the beach and crystal clear water for swimming and/or a picnic.

Together with Tolo Sailing and Introdive, we had a great day on the water.

The children loved the morning speed boat ride with Introdive . We admired hidden caves, a seal, underwater mysterious and lots of birds. The destination was the small island of Daskalio where we had a BBQ picnic on the beach and enjoyed water sports and scuba diving.

In the afternoon we sailed back to Tolo port on the beautiful sailing boat of Tolo Sailing .

The skipper was very hands-on with the kids, they loved sailing the boat and felt like a captain! If one day is not long enough, your family can opt for a two-day or weekly customized sailing trip.

Admire views at Agia Kyriaki Tolo

For the best viewpoint over Tolo, drive up to the church of Agia Kyriaki.

From here, you can admire, Tolo, Tolo Bay and the islands of Daskalio, Koronisi and ‘Aphrodite’.

Discover Romvi or the island of Aphrodite

One of the two small islands that adorn the Gulf of Tolo is called Romvi. One can find sections and walls of a medieval castle, scattered ruins of a Venetian naval base and various buildings and houses. From far, the island resembles a woman and that is why locals refer to her as Aphrodite.

Koronisi is one of the three little islands opposite the port of Tolo. On the island, there is a chapel where weddings and baptisms are carried out.

Explore Daskalio and the small church of Zoodochou Pigi

Our stop at the Daskalio island also gave us the opportunity to visit the small church on top of the island dating back from 1688. It is said that during the period of the Turkish rule, there was a “secret school” on the island. In that “secret school”, Greek children were educated secretly in their language and their history in order to maintain their heritage.

The Monastery of Aghia Moni

The Monastery of Aghia Moni is 3 kilometres Northeast of Nafplion and dates back to the 12th century.

It is one the most important churches of the middle Byzantine period and is in excellent condition. Besides beautiful architecture and views over a landscape resembling the hills of Tuscany, this monastery is famous for its monastic spring with its special water.

Rural and Natural Experiences

Tolos unique landscape and excellent local products make it a great location for agro-tourism. During a one-day customized private tour, we had the chance to learn more about local products and crafts.

Our rural day started with a visit to a bee farm. After a short drive into the Tolo mountains, we met a local beekeeper. Not only did we learn more about bees and tasted the honey, we also had the opportunity to become bee farmers and watch the bees up close. The kids loved wearing the protective gear and study the workers.

Karonis Ouzo

Second stop was the Karonis Ouzo Distillery . Recently mentioned in the New York Times Style Magazine , the family-run distillery has been an institution in Nafplio for over 145 years. The fourth- and fifth-generation father-son owners, Fotis and Yiannis Karonis, are famous for distilling ouzo, perhaps the most well known Greek alcoholic drink. We learned more about the production process and the adults sampled the famous liqueurs made with regional ingredients.

Melas Olive Oil

The Peloponnese region is famous for its olives and premium olive oil. A visit to an olive farm should, therefore, be on your bucket list when visiting this part of Greece. We went to Melas Oil .

After a tour around the olive garden en the factory, we got to taste the famous Melas olives and olive oil. During this hands-on experience, the kids learned more about the biological production of olives, the olive harvest, and the process of turning the fruits into the famous Greek liquid gold. We finally picked up some cosmetics as Melas also produces face & body cosmetics based on organic extra virgin olive oil and honey.

Families in Tolo can also go biking, hiking, walking or even visit a vineyard.

Famous Ancient Sites

The Peloponnese is rich in history and archaeology. Culture-loving families will especially appreciate their time in Tolo. From Tolo, it is easy to visit many of the world-famous ancient treasures of the Peloponnese. The impressive list is long; Ancient Mycenae, Argos, Ancient Tirinta, Ancient Corinth, Ancient Epidaurus, Delphi and Ancient Nemea, Mystras and Olympia.

Ancient Assini in Tolo

A 20-minute walk from Tolo over the headland is ancient Assini, from where a fleet was launched against Troy.

There are well-made pathways, imaginative circuits around the promontory, a multimedia room, a guide to the many types of flora (and fauna in the form of wild tortoises) and much, much more, including information on the archaeological discoveries made in the 1920s by the Swedish Crown Prince and the damage caused by the Italians in World War II.  

There is a fine shingle beach below – ideal for a cooling swim after exploring the site – and a handy taverna a little up the hill above the sea. There can be few if any, Homeric sites which you can explore, then swim from the beach below followed by a lazy taverna lunch overlooking the bay! 

Tips or visiting the ancient sites in summer with kids:

• Make sure your cameras and phones are fully charged!
• Wear comfortable shoes
• Bring hats, sunblock, and water
• Try not to carry anything too heavy

Visit Ancient Epidaurus

Ancient Epidaurus is just 32 km from Tolo (a 35-40 minute drive) and has a magnificent amphitheater dating from 4BC designed to seat 13000 to 14000 spectators.

This tradition continues today during the famous Epidaurus Festival that runs each summer with some of the greatest Greek and foreign actors performing here.

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is considered the greatest ancient Greek theater in terms of acoustics and aesthetics. It was a strong element of the ancient Greek religion and its original purpose was to entertain the patients of the nearby Asklepios hospital.

In Ancient Greece were several Asklepios sanctuaries, considered the first hospitals of the world. Epidaurus is considered the mythological birthplace of Asklepios and was one of the most significant cult sites of Ancient Greece.

Not only the theatre mesmerized us. The entire site of Epidaurus is a must-visit with kids. They will love to discover the temple of Asklepios (375 BC), the temple of Apollo Maleata (4th century BC) and other buildings related to Epidaurus’ function of a medical centre.

The well-preserved stadium and patients hall brought ancient history back to life! You will also see a library, baths and many other structures. Ancient Epidaurus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At the Acropolis in Athens , you can also find an ancient theatre, as well as an Asklepios Sanctuary. You can find everything you need to know about visiting Epidaurus with children in the post: Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Greece with Kids

Do not miss the Archaeological Museum in Epidaurus. With its collection of Ancient Greek medical instruments and the impressive statue of Asklepios, kids will understand how great the ancient Greek civilization was.

Ancient Mycenae

Ancient Mycenae is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and to date, still is a mystery in many ways. You’ve probably heard a lot about the Mycenaean civilization. Along with the Minoan civilization, it ranks among the greatest civilizations of Europe. While you’re in Tolo, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this magnificent site with the kids.

The moment you arrive at the Mycenae archaeological site, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent Lion Gate and its enormous relief sculpture. The site really shows off the impressive architecture of the Mycenaeans. The nearby located Treasury of Atreus, the famous beehive tomb, is an experience that no one in the family will forget.

The Museum of Ancient Mycenae displays the findings from the excavation.

The objects are very well arranged and in such a way as to support an understandable narrative for the kids. With the help of signs, maquettes, photographs and more, a better understanding of Mycenaen culture is possible even with young kids.

There are lots of engaging parts in the museum and our tour guide pointed out the most important object. My kids loved the Cyclopean masonry and the (copy of) the gold mask of Agamemnon in the museum.

To make the best of your visit to the archaeological sites, it is wise to book a state-licensed official guide. Not only can they truly bring the ruins to life with vivid storytelling, but an official guide will also make sure you do not miss any of the attractions and will be able to answer all your questions. Tolo, best beach town for visiting Nafplion

A 25-minute bus ride takes you to elegant Nafplion . Largely Venetian it is topped by massive fortifications (1,000 steps up!) and adjudged one of the most handsome towns in Greece. Nafplion is a very popular destination for foreigners and Greeks. However, in summertime, Tolos is actually the place to pick as your location. From there on, it is easy to discover Nafplion with its castle (and everything else) at your own pace.

Nafplion was the first capital of the modern nation and the narrow lanes of the old town, its mix of Venetian, Turkish and neoclassical architecture, the busy waterfront, the shaded squares and the many fine tavernas, make this historic town a magnet for Greek and foreign visitors alike.

Many consider it to be one of the most romantic cities in the entire country. Our hosts showed us the beautiful highlights of the city. We enjoy a leisurely stroll through the old alleyways with historic buildings, and explored hidden corners of Nafplion. Don’t forget to stop for ice cream!

There are many affordable family hotels and (self-catering) apartments in Tolo, most of them located directly on (or very near) the sandy beach. There is one camping in Tolo.

Paradise Lost Hotel

During our Travel Bloggers Greece trip in Tolo, my family stayed at the Paradise Lost Hotel . The hotel is located at a 5-minute walk from the village, a large playground and the beach. Our comfortable spacious recently-refurbished suite was located on the top floor offering stunning views over the pool area, sea and nearby islands. Families with young kids will enjoy the baby pool, the swings and the green garden with palm and banana trees. Breakfast is pleasant next to the pool.

John and George

Other members of the group stayed at the John and George Hotel . This family-run hotel is situated in the old part of Tolo, above the bay. The hotel’s location on the hill provides an exceptional view across the bay of Tolo and the two famous islands of Romvi and Koronisi. The John & George hosts a pool, 58 rooms and 4 apartments. Lots of games for kids and spacious balconies make this hotel great for families.

Hotel Golden Beach

The recently re-opened Hotel Golden Beach stands 10 m from the sandy Tolo Beach. This is a family-run hotel with friendly, personal service and family rooms (triple), many with sea view. The hotel is situated right opposite the beach with spectacular sea and beach views. 

We had an excellent lunch at the Café Restaurant Bar at Golden Beach.

Where to eat?

Tolos offers lots of choice in taverns, meze bars and restaurants. Many of these are located above or even directly on the beach, making them ideal for a romantic family meal, especially with young kids.

Akrogiali Tavern

On our first night, we celebrated our trip in tavern Akrogiali , right on the sandy beach of Tolo. While the kids were happily playing right in front of us, adults had a relaxed time tasting traditional Greek meze, Greek salads and a cold glass of wine.

Maria’s Restaurant

Our second night brought us to beautifully decorated Maria’s restaurant. I found Maria’s the perfect reason for a visit to Tolo! A top-class family-run restaurant offering traditional and modern cuisine blended together and served in most artistic manners.

We indulged on lots of mezzes, seafood, and salads, all from the freshest of ingredients.

Our gastronomic night was accompanied by the stunning view of the Tolo bay, making the atmosphere and our experience just perfect.

Ornos Cafe Restaurant

Our goodbye dinner was at all-day cafe and restaurant Ornos, romantically located on the beach of Tolo in a beach-house like white wooden setting. The view over the pier and the kind service complemented our dinner of Greek meze, grilled vegetables and risotto with seafood. Ornos also serves traditional loukoumades (Greek donuts) and other Greek sweets.

How to get to Tolo, Peloponnese

You can reach Tolo from Athens by a 2 hours coach, taxi or car ride. From Kalamata airport, the ride is again about two hours.

The Isthmus of Corinth and the Corinth Canal

From Athens, you will pass the famous Corinth Canal. Stopping at the Corinth Canal is a perfect place to stop on the journey to Tolo from Athens. Kids will love watching the smaller boats making the crossing far below.

We travelled by comfortable touring bus from Athens to Tolo and back provided by Zafiris Tours and Tours-transfers .

Tolo, Greece Travel Guide – Things To See, Do, & Eat

Tolo is a charming fishing village located in the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece that belongs to the regional unit of Argolis or Argolida. But all you need to know for starters, is that Tolo is an ideal holiday spot, right by the coast, with beautiful sandy beaches, excellent dining and a range of activities, inlcuding historical and cultural sites for visitors. Tolo makes for a laid back and relaxing spot to spend a few days for solo travellers but it’s also an excellent family-friendly destination. Afterwards, it is ideally located for excursions to the Saronic Gulf and the nearby islands of Spetses and Hydra or further mainland explorations to nearby cities in the Peloponnese.

How to Get to Tolo

From Athens, Tolo is only 2 hours away. The drive is pleasant and mostly follows the new highway route. After leaving Athens, you will be awarded with views of Elefsina Bay and Salamina island, and you might also want to have a quick stop at the Isthmus of Corinth for photos. The Canal of Corinth was first proposed in classical times, but after some failed attempts at construction, it was completed in 1983. The narrow 8-meter-long passage that was carved out, allows smaller vessels to pass through but it is also a popular bungee jumping spot.

Things to Do in Tolo

Tolo has a range of activities to satisfy culture enthusiasts, history buffs, beach lovers and adventure fans. Let’s explore!

Tolo Beaches & Islands

Being a coastal village, there is no surprise that Tolo has some great swimming options. the most famous of which is Tolo Beach, which starts from the area of Psili Ammos and stretches for more than 1 km until the port. You will find organized and unorganized sections with umbrellas and sunbeds available for hire. Tolo Beach is very popular in the summer, with visitors coming from nearby Nafplio to enjoy the cool and protected waters of the bay. Multiple seafood taverns and cafés are located in walking distance.

Kastraki Beach

Kastraki beach is another excellent option nearby Tolo and very close to the acropolis of Ancient Assini. You will find it on Google Maps as Piccola Spagia di Assini, while it can also be spotted by the “Red Rock” bar one of the most romantic spots in the area for a drink overlooking the bay. Kastraki beach is great if you are looking to avoid the crowds.

Paralia Assinis

On the other side of the ancient ruins is a long stretch of land that is called Assini Beach or Plaka. Due to its size there are sandy, pebbly and rocky parts. This is one of the quietest spots in the area, and most people come from nearby hotels. There are not a lot of facilities but you will find a handful of tavernas.

Koronisi, Romvi and Daskalio Islands

For a truly secluded swimming spot, Tolo offers three stunning islands with picturesque coves and turquoise waters.

In addition to swimming and enjoying a day out on the water, you might also spot remains of medieval buildings. The history of the islands actually goes much further back, to ancient times with findings from at least the 6th and 7th century AD.

Sailing & Diving in Tolo

Here is a tough question, sail boat or speedboat? What about both?

You can start with a day cruise at the safe hands of Tolo Sailing , and make your way towards Romvi and Daskalio island. The latter is where we anchored for the afternoon for a swim and a much-needed BBQ on the beach. If you are after a more full on day, the team at Tolo Sailing has more suggestions for you though, like a journey towards Platia and Psili island where you can meet gulls, cormorants and maybe even dolphins! Alternatively, you can also explore the treasures of the islands from below! Tolo is a great diving spot with plenty of caves to discover and stories of shipwrecks and submerged villages. Intro Dive offer both introductory Open Water Courses and Divemaster courses for more experienced scuba divers.

Explore Historical & Cultural Sites in Tolo

Ancient assini.

Ancient Assini is located high on the rock of Kastraki, very close to two beautiful beaches, and was brought to light during excavations in 1920 first by French archaeologists and later on by a Swedish team led by Axel W. Persson. This is a modern and newly established archaeological site that both the local community and archaeologists worked on together to make as accessible and educational as possible. In the area you will find a botanical garden, an excavation space where children get to practice being archaeologists for the day, as well as a collection of photographs from the Georgios Seferis archive with a poem that was written for the King of Asine. A less well known fact is the role of Tolo during WW II and the presence of the ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) in the area. You can visit a small cave at the top to read more about that period and the battle of Assine in Tolo on the 27th of April 1941.

Monastery of Agia Moni (Zoodochos Pigi)

Only 10 km away from Tolo and at a driving distance of 15 minutes you will find the monastery of Agia Moni also known as Zoodochos Pigi which translates to “source of life”. The water spring in the chapel has mythological and religious significance with the first mention of the spring believed to be in the 2nd century AD by Pausanias. On the grounds you will find the beautiful church, and small chapels as well as the living quarters as this is an active monastic community and nunnery. The oldest parts of the church date back to the 12th century.

Church of Agia Kyriaki

The beautiful blue and white church of Saint Kyriaki is bulit on a hill and without a doubt has the best view of the area around and below. From here, you can even spot Romvi and Karonisi islands across the bay.

As one can imagine this is quite the spot to get married in. You get a peaceful and magical setting, Cycladic Island vibes, and it’s only a five-minute drive down to waterfront and the best seafood tavernas.

Tastings & Local Experiences in Tolo

Of course, you can’t leave Tolo without tasting the local produce or learning more about what the area offers. Here are just a few of the things you can look forward to.

Ouzo Karonis

A family run distillery that has been operating almost as long as the modern Greek state has existed. The Karonis Ouzo distillery is only a 20-minute drive from Tolo so there is no excuse to miss it. Here you can learn more about the process and production of ouzo, one of the most important Greek drinks and try the original recipe with its 145 years of history. To get the best results you need to use the traditional method of “apostaxi” that does not alter the flavour or use additives and high quality water from the region. Try not to be the designated sober driver so you can try the local tsipouro as well as the cherry and lemon liqueur (a different kind of limoncello).

Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil

On your way to the archaeological site of Epidavros, you will find the Melas Olive Oil Domain . With more than 1.5 million olive trees in the area, this “liquid gold” as Homer once said is one of the most prized exports of the region. The modern olive oil production process is a complicated and serious affair, that combines the latest technology and expert knowledge of the producers to achieve taste, quality and nutritional benefits.

Beekeeping and Honey Tasting

Bee-keeper or astronaut? To learn more about honey bee farming and taste local honey we visited the bee hives of Mr Dimitris Kontomourtos, a second generation bee-keeper that welcomed us with his father to tell us more about the process. Adults and children alike loved this activity, even if the heat made it hard to walk around our space suits. From getting to see a Queen B to tasting local orange tree honey, this was an experience I will not forget any time soon. * More information by contacting Tolo.gr here .

Nearby Escapes From Tolo

Tolo is a great base if you are looking at exploring the whole region of Argolis or Argolida. There are plenty of notable cities and historical sites in the area.

Nafplio is a vibrant city with strong influences from the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans creating a kaleidoscope of history and culture. It is also one of the most charming and Instagrammable towns in Greece. In addition to being the first capital of Greece (1827) it boasts the first pharmacy, first hospital for the poor and the setting of the first political assassination and first Greek Parliament. It is impossible not to love the cobbled alleyways and charming waterfront that create an intimate and romantic setting. Inhabited since ancient times, the peninsula that Nafplion is located on was an important strategic harbour. Oh, and don’t forget to have ice-cream at Gelateria di Piazza!

Epidavros & Mycenae

Two massively important archaegolocial sites that are less than an hour away from Tolo are the sanctuary of Asclepius and Ancient Theatre of Epidavros and the archaeological site of Mycenae which is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. While the theatre of Epidavros often steals the spotlight with its summer long festival hosting international performances, operas and ancient tragedies, the area of Epidavros was actually a hugely important healing centre where people would travel to from all over for rest, relaxation and to be cured. The kingdom of Mycenae is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and one of the richest, as it was practically covered in gold. The site dates back to the 7th millennium BC but very little remains of that time, as it was continuously inhabited. The monuments that are still visible today were build sometime during 1350 and 1200 BC during the Late Bronze Age. The Lion Gate and Atreus’ Treasure are both simply breathtaking and must see pieces of archaic power.  I would highly recommend you book an experienced tour guide for both archaeological sites to fully appreciate their history and importance.

Due to recent COVID-19 regulations our tour guide supplied us with microphones that we got to wear and walk around the area while still listening to her, in order to allow for social distancing.

Where to Eat in Tolo

Tolo is a well known spot for fresh fish and seafood. All the establishments I visited were excellent in quality and I would happily recommend to visitors to the area.

Taverna Akrogiali

Established in 1955, Taverna Akrogiali is one of the oldest and most well known in the area. Our late night dinner here on the first night of our stay was a treat for all, with our table located only a few meters away from the water and or toes deep in the sand. Fresh fish and a great selection of local dishes, including sesame coated saganaki cheese, and oven roasted eggplants with tomato.

Golden Beach Restaurant

This restaurant is part of Golden Beach Hotel , that you can spot just as you enter the village, opposite the stunning sandy beach of Tolo. I had excellent fresh calamari (a classic Greek summer dish) and enjoyed fresh salads, an excellent spicy cheese dip and local pasta with shrimp. The spacious veranda under the shade has plenty of space for larger groups and you don’t have to travel far from the beach to enjoy!

Maria’s Restaurant

A classy and modern establishment in the centre of the village, with an unbeatable view of Koronisi island from the veranda. I loved the pasta with clams, prawn spaghetti and anchovy appetizers but it was the inventive and mouthwatering salads bursting with flavour and texture that stole the show.

Pick a table with a view of the water for a romantic setting like no other!

Ormos is an all day cafe-restaurant right on the beach, with a beautiful view of the bay and a friendly relaxed atmosphere. It was passion and love for food and the area of Tolo that led Anna and Vaggelis to start Ormos, where visitors are treated to classic and freshly made Greek dishes every day. Start with a leisurely brunch and a smoothie and stay for the special of the day to watch the sun dive over the islands.

Where to Stay in Tolo

Paradise lost.

Paradise Lost is a solo traveller friendly tropical paradise at the heart of Tolo. Palm and banana trees provide shade around the massive pool with a great pool bar for relaxing summer nights. My room at the top floor was recently refurbished with modern decor and offered great views over the gulf and islands in the bay.

*I visited Paradise Lost just after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted for travellers in Greece and found it compliant with all regulations. Single use plastic covers were used for remote controls and towels. Antiseptic gel was available throughout and there were screening measures in place for staff and visitors.

John and George Hotel

The largest hotel in the area where membe rs of our group stayed at. The hotel rooms of John and George were found to be modern and spacious, with great views over the two islands and the pool area below. In total there are 58 rooms and 4 apartments great for larger groups or families, a second kid friendly pool and friendly and welcoming staff.

Truly unique souvenirs are those you cannot buy anywhere else! This is the case with the local beer Toliani. With water from the mountain peaks of Erymanthos in the Peloponnese this pilsner style beer is only available to buy in restaurants around the area. Don’t miss out!

Did you know that the region of Argolida that Tolo is a part of is responsible for 60-70% of the citrus production around the country?

From oranges, to mandarins, lemons and grapefruits, try to taste at least a few.

I loved the orange marmalade by Mastos , a local company that specializes in spoon sweets, jams and marmalades.

14 Reasons to Visit Tolo, Greece

A visit to the Peloponnese peninsula is an experience one should not miss when planning a trip to Greece. From small seaside towns to mountainous villages and renowned archaeological sites, Peloponnese is a feast for all the senses. On the South-East of the Peloponnese in Argolida, lies a small fishing town of Tolo, which over the years has become a popular tourism destination for visitors who seek a lesser crowded escape. We’ve compiled a list of all the reasons to visit Tolo, Greece. 

Our Top Reasons to Visit Tolo, Greece 

Tolo is a perfect holiday destination for all ages, its relaxed vibe and close proximity to some of the most prominent archaeological sites of the Peloponnese attracts many families and couples alike. On our recent four day escape to Tolo with Travel Bloggers Greece we experienced the best the region has to offer. 

1. Discover the history of Ancient Asini 

The remains of a prehistoric settlement located on a hill overlooking Tolo’s bay is one of the area’s highlights. The fortified city dating back to 2nd and 3rd century B.C. was discover by Swedish archaeologists led by Axel W. Persson, some 90 years ago along 25 Mycenaean tombs that were filled with artefacts that accompanied the dead on their way to the Underworld of Hades. Among the findings was a figure of King of Asini which is housed in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion. 

This archaeological site is where literature, archaeology and religion come together. Here you will also find a collection of black and white photos which have been taken from the personal photo archive of Giorgos Seferis, a Greek Nobel laureate who wrote a poem dedicated to the King of Asini in the summer of ’38. 

This area is also a botanical garden where you can find different plants and flowers. Remains of the fortifications are visible until this day. Evidence shows that perhaps under the threat of Argos, Asine was fortified for the first time at the end of the 8th century B.C. Over the centuries Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and the Italians repaired and reinforced the wall, attesting to the strategic significance of the site. 

Other traces found here are two small Roman baths as well as a water supply system. An elaborate cistern partly carved into the rock is visible in the southeastern section of the Lower tower. In one of the caves visitors can admire a collection of photos depicting scenes from WWII.  The entrance to the archaeological site after 15:00 is free of charge. 

2. Admire the view of Tolo from Agia Kyriaki 

Perched on the hill overlooking the Tolo Bay and the nearby Romvi and Koronisi islands, the blue dome church dedicated to Saint Kyriaki is where one can admire the beauty of the area. Come here at around sunset and watch the sun dip into the horizon. 

3. Water Fun: Go Sailing and Scuba Diving 

One of the best ways to experience Greek summer is on a day trip to the nearby islands with a sailing yacht or a speed boat. 

Tolo sailing offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to explore the Argosaronic gulf on either a day trip excursion or multiple day sailing trips. During our stay in Tolo we sailed to the nearby islands of Romvi and Daskalio. We anchored the sailing boat in Daskalio, a small uninhabited island just behind Romvi which is home to a tiny church that was used as a secret school (krifo scholio) for children during the Ottoman rule so that the kids would not lose their connection with the Greek language, religion and culture. 

We swam in the beautiful crystal clear waters and enjoyed a delightful lunch made up of freshly grilled souvlaki skewers and salad served right on the beach.

4. Visit the Monastery of Agia Moni (Zoodochos Pighi)

Situated a short distance from Nafplion (3 kilometres) this beautiful monastery is dedicated to the source of life. Built next to a spring of natural water, this 12th century monastery operates as a nunnery. 

According to mythology it is believed that the spring is the place of the mythological Kanathos, where the goddess Hera would annually renewed her virginity. It is recommended to visit the church on Sunday and to follow the liturgy. 

5. At the Karonis Distillery learn all about the art of Ouzo 

The family run ouzo distillery has been operating for the past 145 years, today it is managed by the 4th and 5th generations of the Karonis family. A wonderful experience not to miss — as you uncover all the little secrets of what makes ouzo such a special Greek drink. 

Visitors can learn all about the process of ouzo making, from start to finish. Apart from the ouzo the distillery also produces tsipouro and mastic liquor as well as cherry liquor made from local Arcadian cherries. Have you ever tried a Greek version of limoncello? Here at Karonis Distillery the family produces their own version of lemon liquor. 

6. Try the Liquid Gold of Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil Domain

The Peloponnese terrain is ruled by olive trees, literary speaking since the ancient times the whole of the area was known for its olive oil production and trade. Almost every household owns their own olive trees. One of the must do activities when visiting Tolo – is spending some time visiting an olive oil mill. The olive oil is an integral part of the Mediterranean diet and is known to be the elixir of health since antiquity. 

A visit to the Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil Domain will introduce you to the modern day olive oil making process, from cultivation to packaging and consumption. We started our visit from the organic olive grove and learned all about the method of treatment and prevention of decease, harvesting and all the stages of production. 

7. Meet a Beekeeper 

If you were ever curious to learn all about how bees maintain their colonies and produce their honey, then a visit to meet Dimitris Kontomourtos is a wonderful opportunity to delve deeper into this natural production. Dimitris is the second generation of beekeepers and has followed in the footsteps of his father. For the occasion we were dressed in special suits and made our way to meet the Queen Bee. 

Dimitris explained everything from how the bees source their food, how they sense danger, how they chose the Queen Bee and what’s her role in the production process. The role of bees in our environment is more than just the honey that they produce, they are actually a sign of how healthy our environment is and are a vital part to the ecosystem. This is a great activity for any age group, especially children.  

8. Follow the footsteps of Asklepios at Epidaurus 

Epidaurus, the small ancient city on the Argolid peninsula is the most famous healing centre in the Greek and Roman world. The place crowned as the birthplace of medicine and the cult of healing deities since the prehistoric times. People would come here seeking help from the almighty god of medicine, Asklepios and as such the sanctuary became one of the richest of its time during the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. 

Epidaurus was the holistic healing centre where patients would come to heal their mind, body and soul. The ancient theatre was built in order to entertain people prior to them being medically treated as therapeutic fun was part of the treatment process. The ancient theatre of Epidaurus until this day is considered a world class attraction and every summer it host the Athens -Epidaurus Festival where visitors can admire acclaimed ancient dramas, operas and other performances. The acoustic system is impeccable. Inside the museum at Epidaurus you can explore the collections of artefact and statues which have been carefully preserved. Among the collection items are also several example of tools which were used for operation procedures such as eye surgery. 

Epidaurus also host a unique monument known as Tholos which is a circular structure, which was only seen in several historical sites. It was compared to the building perfection of the Parthenon and regarded as an exceptional masterpiece. Other examples of Tholos are found in Delphi, Ancient Olympia and Athens. 

After a visit to Epidaurus stop for a lunch break at Taverna Vagias for a Greek meal. We enjoyed freshly grilled meat and salad. 

9. Admire the Lion Gate of Mycenae 

The archaeological site of Mycenae was one of the greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization which played a crucial role in the classical Greek culture. Mycenae inspired some of the worlds greatest writers such as Homer and the all time classic Odyssey. 

According to Greek Mythology the city was built by Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae and when he left the city of Argos for Tiryns, he ensured that the one-eyed giants, Cyclops would construct the walls of Mycenae, and make them so heavy that no human could ever lift. The Lion Gate is a perfect example of such construction.

The history of this glorious city continued for centuries, yet it is best known thanks to Agamemnon, the son of Atreus, who led the expedition against troy during the Trojan War, mentions of whom can be found in Homer’s Iliad. Although many of the excavations from Mycenae are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Athens, the smaller museum onsite offers a great opportunity for visitors to admire the artefacts that tell the story of this great elite civilization – and as Homer describes in the Iliad, Mycenae is “rich in gold”. 

10. Stroll around Nafplio 

Nafplio , one of the most romantic cities of Greece, and the first capital of modern Greece is located a short 20-minute drive from Tolo. Enjoy an afternoon strolling around the picturesque streets lined with Venetian and neoclassical buildings, followed by a walk along the seafront promenade where you can admire the stunning views of Boutzi which greets visitors with its dominating presence. This small Venetian fortress is the most photographed site in Nafplio. In the summer you can reach Bourtzi by a small boat which departs from the port.

For stunning views of the city and the surroundings climb up 999 steps to the Palamidi Fortress. Did you know that in Nafplio like Athens also has a Syntagma Square and a Grande Bretagne Hotel? 

Nafplio is both an important historical and cultural center, don’t miss a visit to the Church of Agios Spyridonas, in from of which Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias was assassinated. 

This city is so spectacular no wonder that Harvard University has established its centre for Hellenic Studies right here. 

11. Pay a visit to the King of Tomatoes 

Juicy, sweet and red tomatoes will definitely keep your tummy full on your holiday in Tolo because the region is known for some of the best tomato producers. On our visit to Tolo we got to explore the production process by visiting the tomato greenhouses of Papadrianos. We learnt all about the different varieties, cultivation process and how to keep pesticides away. Definitely a fascinating experience. 

12. Try the local Pilsner — Toliani 

Beer lovers should try the local pilsner beer called Toliani, which is a special double fermented beer, made with water from the mountain peaks of Erymanthos in the Peloponnese, greek barley malt, hops and yeast. Very refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. 

13. Wine Tasting at Nemea

Nemea, one of Greece’s most famous wine producing regions of Greece is located a 50 minute drive from Tolo. Here visitors can also admire the ancient site of Nemea, a religious sanctuary which hosted the pan-Hellenic games every two years. The region is famous for its indigenous Agiorgitiko grape variety, which is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the town. If you are a wine lover make sure not to miss the Nemean Wine Roads on your trip to Greece. At the end of August the Great Days of Nemea Festival takes place where you can enjoy great wine, food and music as every winery opens its doors to visitors. 

14. Visit nearby Hydra and Spetses on a Day Trip from Tolo 

Spend the day exploring two of the most famous islands in the Saronic Gulf — Hydra and Spetses . The picturesque island of Hydra which is car-free is a wonderful destination which became famous in the 1950s following the filming of the Hollywood movie – Boy on a dolphin starring Sophia Loren. Wander around the cobblestone streets and admire the captains mansions, take photos of the charming donkeys and cats, as well as pay a visit to some of the island’s notable museums. 

In Spetses you will get to explore the Museum of the dynamic figure Laskarina Bouboulina, who was a heroine of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Also a wonderful way to experience the island’s charm is on a horse-drawn carriage. In September Spetses hosts the Armata festival which marks the battle in the strait between Spetses Island and Kosta during the revolution of 1821. This fabulous event is one of a kind. 

Where to Eat in Tolo?

Tolo’s seaside location means that you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to fresh seafood and beachfront dining options. Here’s some of our top picks. 

Akrogiali Taverna Tolo 

This family-run beachfront taverna is one of the oldest in Tolo. Founded in 1955, taverna Akrogiali is located on the main beach of Tolo and serves a generous selection of seafood and meat dishes. Opt for one of the tables set right on the beach and enjoy the best of the Greek summer with your toes touching the sand.

Here we tried fresh calamari, aubergines cooked in red-tomato sauce, a selection of dips like the famous Tzatziki, Greek salad and small fried fish. 

Golden Beach Hotel & Restaurant

Located right across from the beach, this all day cafe and restaurant is a great choice at any time of day. The menu consists of traditional Greek dishes, refreshing salads and starters as well as seafood delights. Try the aubergine soufflé and pasta with shrimps. If you like beer pair your mean with the local Pilsner Toliani.

Maria’s Restaurant Tolo 

Voted as one of the best in the Peloponnese and you will understand why once you devour their cuisine, Maria’s Restaurant is your choice for a more refined dining experience with stunning sea views.

The restaurant has both an outdoor and indoor dining area, but if you are there during the warmer months try to book your table closer to the water to enjoy a romantic evening with your significant other.

From fresh, mouthwatering salads that are a feast for all senses, to seafood appetisers with a twist, cheese bites served with homemade jam and sensational sea-food spaghetti served with fresh clams, you will be spoiled for choice. For those who like mussels don’t forget to order a portion, or maybe two. 

This all day cafe and restaurant enjoys a prime location on the sandy beach of Tolo. During the day escape the sun’s rays under the shade of big umbrellas while enjoying the stunning views of the nearby islands of Koronisi, Platia and Psili. The menu consists of breakfast and brunch options, fresh fruit juices and smoothies, meze selection which pairs well with ouzo as well as traditional classic Greek dishes.

Try the Ormos special, which is octopus stiffado cooked in red tomato sauce, and served with lava beans. Also don’t miss the opportunity to try the tomato fritters, they are delicious.

This four star hotel is located in the older part of Tolo, a short walk from the towns main beach, shops and restaurants. The hotel offers stunning views of Romvi and Koronisi islands as well as the small boat harbour. This family run hotel offers 58 rooms and 4 apartments, the Superior rooms on the top floor feature expansive balconies which are perfect for relaxation and have an automated tent roof, which you can adjust based on your own preference. 

Our room was spacious featuring two twin beds and a sitting area, with a separate walk in closed and bathroom with a bathtub. Breakfast can be served in the indoor area or outdoor right by the hotel’s swimming pool.
