Event Details

Chris Stapleton has announced a new show at The O2, taking place on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 October 2024.

Chris Stapleton will take his “ All-American Road Show ” for a series of headline arena shows in the U.K. and will feature special guest Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives on Wednesday's show and Shelby Lynne on Thursday's show.

The upcoming performances celebrate Stapleton’s highly anticipated new album, Higher, which will be released November 10 on Mercury Nashville (pre-order/pre-save). Produced by Dave Cobb, Morgane Stapleton and Chris Stapleton, Higher was recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio A and showcases his supernatural voice and musical versatility across 14 songs that defy genre.

Already receiving critical attention, Stapleton has unveiled two album tracks: “Think I’m In Love With You” and “White Horse,” of which Billboard praises “a hell-raising anthem, meant to be blared with windows down and enjoyed with ears ringing. ‘White Horse’ finds Stapleton pairing an outlaw swagger with some heaven-scraping vocals, going for the gusto throughout the chorus to try and match the guitar snarl.” Additionally, Consequence declares, “‘White Horse’ certainly suggests that Stapleton is leaning into his strengths as a cross-genre act” and Brooklyn Vegan proclaims, “one of the most jaw-dropping singles yet from an artist who rarely if ever misses.”

The new music adds to yet another landmark year for the 8x Grammy, 15x ACM and 15x CMA Award-winner, who is nominated for three more awards at this year’s 57th Annual CMA Awards: Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year (“We Don’t Fight Anymore” with Carly Pearce). The awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Nashville on ABC Wednesday, November 8 at 8:00PM ET/7:00PM CT.

Alongside Stapleton (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, slide electric guitar), the new album features Cobb (acoustic guitar, eclectic guitar), J.T. Cure (bass), Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Derek Mixon (drums), Morgane (background vocals, synthesizer, tambourine) and Lee Pardini (organ, piano).

One of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians, in the past year Stapleton was named Entertainer of the Year at the 58th ACM Awards—resulting in a prestigious ACM Triple Crown Award—and Male Vocalist of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards—his sixth time earning the award, setting the record for most wins ever in the category. Additionally, in February, he performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVII and has collaborated in recent years with Adele, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Sheryl Crow, Santana and many more.

The new album follows 2020’s acclaimed Starting Over, which went on to win three awards at the 67th Annual GRAMMYs: Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance (“You Should Probably Leave”) and Best Country Song (“Cold”) in addition to earning Album of the Year honors at both the CMA and ACM Awards. Called a “a sure-footed masterpiece” by the Associated Press, the album landed on “Best of 2020” lists at NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Esquire, Vulture, The Tennessean and The New York Times, who declared, “Chris Stapleton’s roar isn’t designed to scare you off. It’s regal, an announcement of an alpha figure asserting his primacy…on this, his fourth album, the thrill is back.” Prior to Starting Over, Stapleton released a pair of Platinum-certified releases in 2017 - From A Room: Volume 1 and From A Room: Volume 2 - as well as his x5 Platinum breakthrough solo debut album in 2015, Traveller.

In addition to their work as musicians, the Stapletons are founders of the Outlaw State of Kind charitable fund, which supports a variety of causes that are close to their heart.

Chris Stapleton Showcases The Music At London Show

Posted by Dan Savoie | Sep 16, 2022 | Concert Reviews

Chris Stapleton London 2022

Early in the evening, Stapleton said he’d keep the banter short and let the music do most of the talking, which he did for about two hours straight. It was a long and satisfying set (although not as long as the 24-song show he recently performed in Montreal) mostly centered around his four studio albums and his latest single Joy of My Life.

chris stapleton tour london

Stapleton is a unique voice in country music. His traditional country sound is laced with heavy doses of blues and Southern rock, at times sounding like Charlie Daniels, Bob Segar or Otis Redding. Never without a guitar in his hands, his sound just wails with as much blues as someone like Muddy Waters. That playing was highlighted with a gorgeously long and thrilling version of the 2017 Gold single I Was Wrong.

Fans spent the night singing along to number one hits like Starting Over, Broken Halos and You Should Probably Leave, but the audience went frantic when he broke out to Tennessee Whiskey, his 2015 breakout hit from the debut album Traveler, which sparked one of the loudest encore screaming crowds of the year.

The show ended with the crowd in a frenzy and Stapleton singing one of his semi-autobiographical songs Outlaw State of Mind, which he wrote the lyrics about pieces of his own life.

He doesn’t say too much, he mostly stays put in the center of the stage, and he eyes his lovely wife Morgane a lot! Anything else wouldn’t be Chris Stapleton though – as evidenced by his show in London, the music clearly does the talking.

Nikki Lane in London 2022

Nikki Lane at Budweiser Gardens in London in 2022. Photo by Dan Savoie

Support act Nikki Lane is a bit of an outlaw herself, and a perfect start to an evening of Chris Stapleton. She’s out on a tour promoting her upcoming album Denim & Diamonds, which comes out on September 23 and she kept her set mostly focused on that album, while lightly diving in to her 2017 hit album Highway Queen.

It feels like Lane is on the brink of really breaking out. There’s something about her new songs that dig deep into the psyche. She seems unafraid of telling stories that dig deep into every day emotions and that really touched the hearts of all who heard her perform tonight.

Christopher Alvin Stapleton is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1978. He grew up in Staffordsville, Kentucky, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2001 to pursue an engineering degree from Vanderbilt University but dropped out to pursue his career in music. Stapleton signed a contract with Sea Gayle Music to write and publish his music and has since written and co-written over 170 songs. He has co-written six number-one country songs for artists such as Kenny Chesney, Josh Turner, George Strait, and Luke Bryan. Stapleton's songs have appeared on many artists' albums including Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, and Taylor Swift. He has co-written with several artists as well including Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, and Ed Sheeran. As a vocalist, Stapleton sang lead in two bands before he started recording as a solo artist including a bluegrass ensemble called the SteelDrivers from 2008 to 2010 and the Jompson Brothers. After that, he released his solo debut studio album titled Traveller in 2015, which reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His version of "Tennessee Whiskey" was certified Diamond by the RIAA. His second studio album From a Room: Volume 1 was released in May 2017 and earned him a second CMA Award for Album of the Year and also a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. From a Room: Volume 2 was released in December 2017. Stapleton released his fourth studio album Starting Over in 2020, for which he won his third Grammy for Best Country Album. The title track was issued as its lead single. Stapleton has been recognized with several awards including eight Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, and 14 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. He was named the ACM's Artist-Songwriter of the Decade. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Stapleton at number 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Sturgill Simpson Is Back With New Tour, New Album…and a New Name

Back in 2021, Sturgill Simpson promised Rolling Stone that he was done making albums under his own name after the release of The Ballad of Dood and Juanita . "I always said there would be five, and I wondered if I'd go back on that. But it really has cemented every step of the way how much I don't want to carry all that weight," he told RS' s Marissa R. Moss. "Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way."

On Wednesday, Simpson made good on that vow with the announcement of Johnny Blue Skies, his new moniker, and a band full of members from his original group: guitarist Laur Joamets, drummer Miles Miller, and bassist Kevin Black, plus the addition of Robbie Crowell, formerly of Midland, on keys. Simpson will introduce Johny Blue Skies to fans on a fall tour - the Why Not? Tour - beginning with a festival show at Outside Lands in San Francisco in August.

There's also a new album: Passage Du Desir , named after a storefront on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis in Paris. Due July 12, the record was produced by Johnny Blue Skies and David Ferguson at Clement House Recording Studio in Nashville and at Abbey Road Studios in London. According to a release, it will comprise eight songs with titles like "Swamp of Sadness," "Jupiter's Faerie," and "Mint Tea."

Tickets to Simpson's tour will go on sale via a pre-sale on June 12; fans must first register at Simpson's website . A general on-sale for a limited number of tickets begins June 14.

Artists Are Canceling Arena Tours Right and Left. Maybe They Shouldn’t Have Been Playing Arenas in the First Place

This is an edition of the newsletter Pulling Weeds With Chris Black, in which the columnist weighs in on hot topics in culture. Sign up here to get it in your inbox every Thursday.

Last week, the Black Keys, a band best known for soundtracking car commercials and occasionally fistfighting fellow Nashville resident Jack White, canceled the entire North American leg of a scheduled arena tour without explanation. Why would a band without a major hit in years think it can sell out arenas in tertiary markets? No one can be sure, but the touring business is in trouble, and part of the reason is ego.

Going on tour used to be a non-negotiable part of a life in music—a way to interact with fans, make money, and see the world. But nowadays, artists either want to play arenas or stadiums or do a residency, playing multiple nights in one city at the same venue, à la Harry Styles and Adele. Every week, another artist goes viral on Twitter for low ticket sales, with a screengrab of a Ticketmaster seat map awash in blue. I will be at the Charli XCX and Troye Sivan show in New York City at Madison Square Garden, but can that duo sell as many tickets in Tacoma on a weeknight? Kim Petras, an artist with hits, had such an awful time with arenas that she resorted to Groupon. And legacy artists aren’t necessarily faring better; for every Justin Timberlake, who just added nine dates to his Forget Tomorrow world tour, there’s a Jennifer Lopez, who recently cut her upcoming summer greatest-hits tour short by seven dates , reportedly due to soft ticket sales.

The Taylor Swifts of the world are still making money on the road, and artists from Wednesday and Waxahatchee to Chappel Roan and Joanna Newsom are selling out shows at great venues. But big arena tours have historically been sustained by early ticket sales, and that part of the market appears to be collapsing. The Twitter account @UnderFaceValue tracks price drops and undersold shows and “other peculiarities across the ticketing ecosystem”; its mantra, because soft sales translate into crazy 11th-hour price breaks, is #PaysToWait. If you’d waited for the right moment, you could have seen the Rolling Stones in Seattle for $29, 21 Savage in Chicago for $19, or George Strait and Chris Stapleton in Indianapolis for $13.

These challenges hit close to home for me. My cohost Jason Stewart and I take our podcast, How Long Gone, on the road. We experienced a high point in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s, a cozy spot in Fishtown with a rich history. The show was a sellout, the crowd was fantastic. The next time we visited, we stepped up to a bigger venue, World Cafe Live. The turnout was decent, but it didn’t reach the same level of energy, and the experience felt different. We're heading back to Philadelphia in June, and we've decided to return to Johnny Brenda’s . It's a lesson learned: Better to have a packed house in an intimate setting than a half-empty room in a larger venue. The ego bruise was temporary, but the lesson was invaluable.

So, who do we blame? Is this the fault of corporate mega-promoters like LiveNation (which produced the Black Keys’ tour) booking artists into the biggest venues possible, then jacking the price of everything from tickets to parking to concessions, all regardless of what the market will bear, while tightening their grip on the marketplace to the point that the Department of Justice is preparing to sue them in federal court for antitrust violations ? Is it agents and managers gassing up the artist? Is it just the artist's desire to sell out these giant venues? Maybe all of the above.

If you’re going out on the road and you’re big enough to even consider booking an arena show, why not do three nights in a prestigious venue like Radio City Music Hall or the Beacon Theatre instead? It provides fans with a more intimate experience, and every night will feel full. The Black Keys eventually released a statement . They didn’t blame anyone. They didn’t whine about how hard touring is. They just said they were recalibrating after a successful European run playing venues like Brixton Academy in London and the Zenith in Paris. It was the right approach. We all know it was ticket sales, but no artist should be ashamed of taking your lumps, switching things up, and selling tickets.

Big streaming numbers look great online but don’t necessarily translate to ticket sales. A touring business has to be built, returning to the same cities every year. A career cannot rely solely on the algorithm. Being great live will get people through the door and keep them coming back. These offline collective experiences are few and far between these days; buying tickets and going to shows is essential and valuable. They just don’t all need to be in arenas.
