Wilco Announce 2024 Australian Tour

By Jules LeFevre

Chicago outfit Wilco have announced their first Australian tour in over a decade. The band will play four shows in the country next year (all clustered on the east coast, sorry Perth and Adelaide), kicking things off in Brisbane on Wednesday, 13th March.

Jeff Tweedy and co. will then head to Canberra, Melbourne, and finish off the tour in Sydney with a show at the Opera House on Thursday, 21st March. Local artist Leah Senior will be supporting the band at all dates except for the Opera House gig; see the full list of dates and ticketing details below.

Wilco: ‘Evicted’

“How is it possible that it’s been over 10 years since Wilco was last down under?!” Jeff Tweedy said in a statement. “Mind-blowing. So we’re beyond thrilled to be able to say we’re coming back. We love Australia and can’t wait!”

The band will be here supporting their new album Cousin , which will hit shelves on Friday, 29th September. They’ve released four albums since they were last in Australia: Star Wars ,  Schmilco ,  Ode To Joy  and  Cruel Country .

For Cousin , the band tapped Welsh artist Cate Le Bon for production duties. It’s a big deal, given Wilco have rarely teamed up with outside producers for their albums – in fact, the last time they did that was with Jim O’Rourke on 2007’s  Sky Blue Sky .

“The amazing thing about Wilco is they can be anything,” Le Bon said about working the band on Cousin . “They’re so mercurial, and there’s this thread of authenticity that flows through everything they do, whatever the genre, whatever the feel of the record. There aren’t many bands who are able to, this deep into a successful career, successfully change things up.”

Wilco 2024 Australian Tour Dates

  • Wednesday, 13th March – Princess Theatre, Brisbane, QLD
  • Friday, 15th March – Canberra Theatre, Canberra, ACT
  • Sunday, 17th March – The Forum, Melbourne, VIC
  • Thursday, 21st March – Sydney Opera House, Sydney NSW

Tickets are on sale Thursday, 21st September via Love Police .

Wilco add more shows to their first Australian tour in over a decade

The six members of Wilco pose on a concrete stairwell outside

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Wilco are one of the greats.

They've long since fortified themselves as one of America's best musical outfits, driven both by a love of traditional songcraft and sonic curiosity for more than 30 years.

They're also a sensational live band, as anyone who caught their last Australian visit in 2013 can attest. Since then however, we've watched on in envy as Wilco have released a string of albums and played countless tours without winging their way back to our shores.

No more! The band will finally make their way back next March for a tour of the East Coast's theatres, concert halls, and the Sydney Opera House.

UPDATE: After selling out a stack of shows, Wilco have announced a third show in Melbourne and second shows in both Sydney and Brisbane. Get all the details below.

"How is it possible that it's been over 10 years since Wilco was last down under!?' says frontman Jeff Tweedy .

"Mind-blowing. So we're beyond thrilled to be able to say we're coming back. We love Australia and can't wait!"

The Chicago-based band have released four albums since their last Australian tour ( Star Wars , Schmilco , Ode To Joy and Cruel Country for those playing along at home) and they're putting out another later this month.

Titled Cousin (which may or may not be a reference to Chicago-based TV drama The Bear and its Wilco-friendly soundtrack ), the record was produced by Welsh musician  Cate Le Bon . It marks Wilco's first with an outside producer since 2004's A Ghost Is Born and promises a sea-change for the group .

If lead single 'Evicted' is anything to go by, we can expect another subtle evolution to Wilco's ongoing shape-shifting, which has seen them touch on alt-country, folk, experimental jamming, eclectic indie rock and more throughout a catalogue any modern ensemble would be envious of.

That all makes for a terrific concert experience. Whether it's the searing fretwork of lead guitarist Nels Cline , the bedrock rhythms of Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt , the multi-instrumental ornamentations of Mikael Jorgensen and Patrick Sansone , or simply the working man's banter of Tweedy – they're a real band's band.

Honestly, if you haven't seen tour doco Ashes of American Flags or applauded at home to live album Kicking Television , are you really a Wilco fan?

Joining Wilco at all shows (except the Sydney Opera House) will be WA-bred singer-songwriter Leah Senior .

Her specific strain of '70s shaded Australiana folk and baroque pop has the power to stun live on stage, and you've got plenty of time to acquainted with her fourth and latest album, The Music That I Make , before she warms up audiences in March.

Catch Wilco at the following dates, proudly supported by Double J. Tickets are on sale 21 September.

Chicago alt-rock legends celebrate 30 years of music

Since their formation all the way back in 1994, Chicago-based six-piece Wilco have gone on to become one of the most beloved alternative rock bands of the past 30 years, delivering a string of classic records – including 2002’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot , often cited among the greatest albums of the century – and winning multiple Grammy awards. Now, after 11 long years away, the legendary indie rock outfit returns to Australia to perform a career-spanning set – and selections from their highly anticipated new pop record, Cousin –  at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall for one night only.

Led by accomplished singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy, Wilco evolved from their ramshackle beginnings in alt-country to become critically acclaimed guitar rock favourites, drawing on their love of classic pop, country and experimental sound across their breakthrough album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot , 2004’s Grammy-winning A Ghost is Born, and 2022’s Americana opus, Cruel Country. This year sees the release of their most adventurous album to date, the Cate Le Bon-produced pop record Cousin , and in 2024 the band will celebrate 30 years together with performances that dive into their long and illustrious career.

Don’t miss these alt-rock icons, in what is sure to be a very special show.

Let's just drop any pretense or superlative filled narrative and cut right to the bottom line: Wilco is the world's greatest rock band. Period. Sampling from their entire back catalog and the current Ode to Joy they mesmerized the Heinz Hall audience for over 2 hours. And it was indeed a joy to be sitting in the Orchestra Pit right in front of the amazing Nels Cline!

These guys are an astonishing act to see live. Consummate professionals with excellent songs, incredible musicianship and a wonderful rapport with their audience, Wilco have zero rock and roll pretension and all of the "big show" quality you expect from a legend. Best of all they always have new stuff to mix in with their extensive back catalogue. Few artists can boast such a deep base of good songs to pull from. Wilco plays a great show, up there with the best I've seen. Bruce Springsteen and George Clinton are the only artists that give this same value.

Amazing show, as usual. As Tweedy admitted, possibly the best London gig they ever had. This time around, audience was somehow awake and actually took part into the show.

Glenn was amazing and Pat Sansone could actually play floss if he was asked to. Can't wait for next gig!

To say that Kinky Friedman was a multi-life figure who was famous for his quick wit and bold Texas chutzpah is an understatement, but it is where we will begin.

wilco tour dates australia

A unique voice has been lost to the country music and literature worlds. On June 26, 2024, at the age of 79½, the cigar-chomping, irreverent troubadour, and author Richard Samet “Kinky” Friedman passed away. To say that Kinky Friedman was a multi-life figure who was famous for his quick wit and bold Texas chutzpah is an understatement, but it is where we will begin.

The Friedman family relocated from Chicago to Houston not long after Friedman’s 1944 birth to run Echo Hill Ranch, a summer camp that Kinky would call home for the rest of his life. He had an innate curiosity for the unknown and a thirst for adventure throughout his youth. He went to University of Texas at Austin to study psychology, then joined the Peace Corps and went to Borneo, where he had an experience that would change his perspective on life and his art.

wilco tour dates australia

After forming Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys in Nashville in the early 1970s, Friedman’s music career took off. Many have likened his band—a country group with a social conscience—to the twisted offspring of Bob Wills and Lenny Bruce. His fearless and innovative 1973 album “Sold American” cemented his reputation as an outlaw country artist.

He championed irreverence and lampooned Southern small-mindedness in his daring and sarcastic songs. Also, they mirrored the man’s complicated character; they were amazing. Fans and fellow musicians alike were won over by Kinky’s music for its combination of heart and comedy. Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan were among his closest companions, and he was a friend of presidents and icons as well as a composer par excellence.

“Musicians can run this state better than politicians. We won’t get a lot done in the mornings, but we’ll work late and be honest.”

Kinky was talented in more than just music, though. He contributed to Texas Monthly as a columnist and wrote detective novels in his spare time. His political career was just as eventful as his musical and literary ones. With his eccentric and funny campaign slogans, he captured the interest of many in 2006 when he conducted a longshot campaign for governor of Texas, with the campaign slogan “Why The Hell Not?”

For all the people whose lives Kinky Friedman impacted, his loss is a cause for contemplation. Not only will his music and writings live on, but so will the joy he spread via his infectious sense of humor. Despite experiencing immense suffering and grievance in recent years, his wit and determination persisted right up until the end.

We honour Kinky Friedman’s lasting impact on country music, literature, and the lives of his fans and acquaintances even as we grieve his passing. People will keep reading his books, singing his songs, and cherishing his memories. According to his close friend Kent Perkins, “in a peaceful corner of paradise there is a large, comfortable chair, a well-lit floor lamp, a collection of biographies, and a couple of elderly dogs tail-wagging to the subtle aroma of cigar smoke”.

The world lost some of its vibrancy when Kinky Friedman trod on a rainbow. His uniqueness and the joy he brought to others via his music will live on in the hearts of listeners for years to come.

The life of Kinky Friedman was a vibrant tapestry adorned with melodies, lyrics, and an unwavering zeal for living. While we say our goodbyes to the Kinkster, may his legacy continue on throughout country music and beyond via the songs and recollections that we cherish.

Country music fans are buzzing with excitement as Lainey Wilson, the chart-topping singer-songwriter, releases her latest single, “Hang Tight Honey.” This new track is a standout addition to Wilson’s already impressive discography and serves as the lead single from her upcoming fourth studio album, “Whirlwind,” set to drop on August 23, 2024.

“Hang Tight Honey” showcases Wilson’s signature blend of country roots with a modern twist, offering listeners a countrified funk-rock hybrid that’s both fresh and familiar. The song was released on May 20, 2024, and has been making waves ever since. Written by Wilson alongside Jason Nix, Paul Sikes, and Driver Williams, and produced by the renowned Jay Joyce, the single is a testament to Wilson’s growth as an artist and her ability to craft songs that resonate deeply with her audience.

wilco tour dates australia

The inspiration behind “Hang Tight Honey” stems from Wilson’s personal experiences on the road and pays tribute to the strength and tenacity of women while also infusing a fresh, contemporary vibe, serving as a testament to Wilson’s artistry and creativity, solidifying her position as a trailblazer in the modern country music scene.

The lyrics convey a sense of longing for home and the comfort of being with loved ones, a sentiment that many touring musicians can relate to. Despite the challenges of a nomadic lifestyle, Wilson finds solace in the work she does and the joy it brings to her fans.

Wilson first introduced “Hang Tight Honey” to the world with a live performance at the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards on May 16, 2024, where she also covered “God Blessed Texas”. The single has since debuted on the Billboard Country Airplay chart at number 19 and continues to climb, reflecting the song’s infectious melody and Wilson’s powerful vocals.

Fans can catch Wilson performing “Hang Tight Honey” live on her headlining tour, “Country’s Cool Again,” which kicked off on May 31, 2024, in Nashville. With her new album “Whirlwind” on the horizon and a tour underway, Lainey Wilson is set to take the country music scene by storm, proving once again why she’s one of the genre’s most exciting and beloved artists.

For those eager to hear “Hang Tight Honey,” the single is available across various streaming platforms, and the official audio can be found on Wilson’s YouTube channel. As we await the release of “Whirlwind,” “Hang Tight Honey” serves as the perfect appetiser, leaving fans hungry for more of Lainey Wilson’s heartfelt storytelling and dynamic sound.

wilco tour dates australia

Wilco’s journey has not been short-lived, with their foray into the musical Wild West beginning in the mid-’90s, growing from humble alt-country roots. Their willingness to dive into folk, rock, and indie sensibilities since has created a solid, easily recognisable sound despite their wide range of influences. And it hasn’t been for nought; to date, the band have holstered a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Alternative Music Album – A Ghost Is Born – and has been nominated seven times over the years across various genres including Best Folk, Best Rock, Best Americana.

Over the years, they’ve achieved a certain sonic greatness through the outfits line-up. With Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt as mastheads, they have only been bolstered by the talents of Nels Cline , Pat Sansone , Glenn Kotche , and Mikael Jorgensen . Together, they’re bound to fill up our theatres, concert halls and opera houses with ease. BT from Love Police summed it up eloquently “Wow Wow Wow Wilco are coming.”

Proudly presented by Love Police and supported by Double J, the tour is hitting Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney in March 2024. Joining the Chicago cruisers on this East Coast foray is the immensely talented Australian folk darling Leah Senior . Promising an unforgettable mixture of old tunes, classic hits and new cuts from their latest album Cousin , Wilco’s journey to Australian shores is more than an event, it’s a triumphant return – and it’s just around the corner!

Love Police have announced the return of alt-rock icons Wilco to Australian stages after a ten year hiatus.

Chicago rock band Wilco was first formed in 1994 by the remaining members of alternative country rock group Uncle Tupelo, following the departure of lead singer Jay Farrar and they’ve only become bigger and better with age.

Founding member Jeff Tweedy and former Uncle Tupelo bandmate John Stirratt are joined by Nels Cline, Pat Sensone, Glenn Kotche and Mikael Jorgensen. Together as Wilco, they’re set to return to Australia’s concert halls, opera houses, and musical stages for the first time since 2013.

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for over ten years to announce the return of musical champs and Grammy Award winning outfit WILCO to the theatres, concert halls and opera houses of Australia.

From their humble mid-‘90s alt-country origins, WILCO have manifestly become better with age. Founding member and ringleader Jeff Tweedy and Uncle Tupelo bandmate John Stirratt are joined by Nels Cline, Pat Sansone, Glenn Kotche and Mikael Jorgensen, who together as WILCO have gone from strength to strength paving their own unique path to sonic greatness.

A musical chameleon, WILCO have been inspired by the greats from music to 20th century literature and their songs have touches of alt-country, folk, rock and eclectic indie-sounds making their music deeply pleasurable and widely loved.

The band won a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Alternative Music Album – A Ghost Is Born – and have been nominated seven times over the years across various genres including Best Folk, Best Rock, Best Americana. They’re just the best.

This coming March, please experience WILCO. One of the planet’s most powerful and intuitive rock’n’roll bands as they perform along the East Coast delivering audiences an unforgettable show filled with old tunes, classic hits and probably some new music from their latest album  Cousin. It just couldn’t get more exciting!

Wilco Announce 2024 Australian Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Wednesday, 13th March – Princess Theatre, Brisbane, QLD

Friday, 15th March – Canberra Theatre, Canberra, ACT

Sunday, 17th March – The Forum, Melbourne, VIC

Thursday, 21st March – Sydney Opera House, Sydney NSW

Tickets are on sale Thursday, 21st September via Love Police .

Tour de France 2024: Dates, times, routes stage details and where to watch

T he Tour de France is one of the three grand tours – the others being the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España – that form the backbone around which the cycling season is structured.

This is the biggest and most important bike race in the world, with an estimated 80 per cent of most WorldTour team’s sponsorship income being based around the Tour.

Founded in 1903 by Henri Desgrange, editor of L’Auto newspaper, the Tour may not be the favourite stage race of the cycling cognoscenti but it is one that captures the imagination of the wider sporting public. As a result, the race is the biggest annual sporting event in the world with more live spectators than even the Olympics or football World Cup. Read the latest news before the race starts here.

How many stages are there in the Tour de France?

The second grand tour of the season comprises 21 stages and will be contested over 3,498 kilometres (2,173 miles). This year’s Tour consists of eight flat stages, four hilly stages, seven mountain stages with four summit finishes, two individual time trials and two rest days.

What time does the 2024 Tour de France start?

This year’s race gets under way with the 206km opening stage from Florence to Rimini on Saturday June 29, 2024. Racing starts at 11.40am.

How long does the Tour de France last?

The Tour de France last three weeks. After setting off from Florence on June 29, the race concludes with a 33.7km individual time trial from Moncao to Nice. Eschewing to traditional stage into Paris as a knock-on effect of the Olympic Games, this will be the first time since 1989 when the race has ended with a time trial.

Will the 2024 Tour de France be shown on TV?

Every stage of the race can be watched live on Eurosport, while terrestrial channels ITV4 and S4C will also be broadcasting the action. Live shows and highlights programmes will be shown at different times each day.

Alternatively, if you are stuck at work then you can follow the action, as it unfolds, right here with Telegraph Sport . Almost every stage will be live blogged by our team while selected race details and standings in the main classifications will also be published.

How many teams are there in the Tour de France?

Twenty-two teams will take part in the race. As with all WorldTour races, each team from the top-flight of professional cycling received an invitation and in the case of the Tour de France, all 18 of them are contracted to compete in the grand tour. In addition they will be joined by four UCI ProTeams – the two highest placed UCI ProTeams in 2023 (Lotto Dstny and TotalEnergies), along with Uno-X and Israel-Premier Tech who were selected by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the organisers of the Tour.

How many people compete at the Tour de France?

Twenty-two teams comprising eight riders will start. In total 176 riders will be on the start line in Florence.

Latest news in the countdown to the Tour de France

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard has been dealt a blow after team-mate Sepp Kuss was ruled out of this year’s Tour de France after the American failed to recover from Covid ahead of this weekend’s grand départ.

Kuss was lined up to compete in a support role for Visma-Lease a Bike leader Vingegaard but fell ill during this month’s Critérium du Dauphiné. The winner of last year’s Vuelta a España has been replaced in the eight-man team by Bart Lemmen.

“This is, of course, very hard for Sepp in the first place. His contribution is always very important in the team, but then of course he has to be completely fit,” sporting director Merijn Zeeman said. “Unfortunately, we had to conclude together that this is insufficient.”

Tour de France 2024 preview: Full schedule, teams and how to watch live

Jonas Vingegaard bids for a third consecutive victory in the Tour de France

The Tour de France 2024 is almost upon us with the world’s most prestigious cycling race getting underway on Saturday 29 June.

All eyes are on the duel between Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark. The pair have won the last four titles between them with each aiming to win a third Tour de France.

After his emphatic victory in the Giro d'Italia, Pogačar goes into the event as favourite to add to his two wins from 2020 and 2021. It could be an incredible few weeks for the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist with the Tour de France ended just days before the Olympic Games Paris 2024 .

Meanwhile, Vingegaard has made a late comeback from injury to be fit for the Tour as he seeks to become the sixth rider - and the first Scandinavian - to win three consecutive yellow jerseys.

This year’s race is unique for a number of reasons. It will be the first edition to begin in Italy , marking 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian winner of the Tour de France.

The 'Grand Départ' is in Florence with the field traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France during Stage 4. This will also be the first Tour to finish outside of Paris - due to its proximity to the Olympic Games - with the final stage an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice which will decide overall victory.

Here is everything you need to know about this year’s Tour de France.

Riders to watch at the Tour de France 2024

As well as the big two - Pogačar and Vingegaard - other challengers for the yellow jersey include Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič .

Evenepoel has played down his chances of general classification success on his Tour debut, but his pedigree suggests he will be a threat. The Belgian has some impressive results to his name including winning the 2022 road race world title, and GC at the 2022 Vuelta a España in 2022. He also boasts two Liège-Bastogne-Liège victories.

Roglič, the 2020 runner-up behind compatriot Pogačar, will take some confidence from his overall victory at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Jasper Philipsen is the favourite to retain the sprinters' green jersey after winning Milan-San Remo and finishing second at Paris-Roubaix. Denmark's Mads Pedersen , road race world champion five years ago, is among his main challengers while Mark Cavendish needs just one stage win to break his tie with Eddy Merckx (both on 34) for the most stage victrories in race history.

Old cyclocross rivals Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert will also be in the mix for stage wins. The latter is back as one of Vingegaard's chief lieutenants in the Visma Lease a Bike team after sustaining multiple fractures in a crash at March's Dwars door Vlaanderen.

The 2024 Tour features seven mountain stages, including four summit finishes, and will suit the climbers. Pogačar (2020, 2021) and Vingegaard (2022) are past winners of the King of the Mountains' polka-dot jersey and are likely contenders once more.

Tour de France 2024 route and important stages

Also among the 21 stages of the 2024 Tour de France are two individual time trials and gravel sectors covering a total distance of 3,492km.

Starting from Florence, the 2024 Tour will complete three full stages in Italy traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France from Pinerolo.

With no Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux on this year's route, the Queen stage is the penultimate stage - a testing 132km cycle from Nice to the summit of the Col de la Couillole .

In recent years, the final individual time trial has been held on the penultimate day with the finale a procession on the Champs-Elysées on the Sunday. But, due to preparations for Paris 2024, this year's race will conclude with a 33.7km time trial from Monaco to Nice.

That means the yellow jersey could potentially be decided on the final day. The last time the Tour ended with a time trial was in 1989 when Greg Lemond overturned a 50-second deficit to Laurent Fignon to take victory by just eight seconds, still the smallest winning margin in race history.
