Twitter loves Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s new video. Except that Kylie cameo

Just when we thought all hopes were dashed for another Hot Girl Summer , rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have served us a music video dripping in decadence and spandex.

On Friday at midnight, the “I Like It” star dropped the music video for her newest single , “WAP,” featuring “Savage” singer Megan Thee Stallion — and a whole host of assorted guests.

Before the two rap artists even make an entrance, the video’s first cameo is purely musical: The beat kicks off with DJ Frank Ski’s 1993 club classic earworm, “Whores in This House,” which is sampled heavily throughout the track.

California congressional candidate slams Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’

James P. Bradley, the Republican opponent for Ted Lieu’s congressional seat, tweeted his disapproval of the new Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion ‘WAP’ single.

As the title card hits the screen, another invisible guest makes his presence known. Filmmaker Colin Tilley directed this video, further padding his résumé alongside such hits as Future’s “Mask Off” and “Taki Taki” by DJ Snake (also featuring Cardi B).

Enter our two queens, decked out in matching pink and yellow bodysuits. We’re treated to tigers, golden busts (and butts) and a snake pit before meeting the first true cameo: Kylie Jenner, beauty mogul and reality TV star, strutting down a hallway in silence.

The audience (on Twitter, at least) was not pleased.

One Twitter user made a pointed list . “People Other Than K*lie That Coulda Shown Up,” she wrote, including names from up-and-coming rappers Saweetie and Flo Milli to Betty White and “a cucumber.”

Cardi B has a history of championing fellow MCs and female artists in general, a fact she nailed home with a string of star-studded appearances toward the end of the video.

First up was singer and former Fifth Harmony member Normani, recently featured on the “Birds of Prey” soundtrack alongside Megan Thee Stallion. Fans loved Normani’s potential nod to Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa but clamored for more, demanding a feature on top of the dance moves she absolutely ate up.

In what felt almost like a roll call of female talent, Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía appeared next in a red spandex catsuit and a questionable braided hat. Some fans wanted the “Con Altura” sensation to join in with the twerking, but she stuck to her traditional flamenco moves — unlike instances of the past, when she’s been accused of cultural appropriation .

Yet another room of the video’s mansion of clout reveals “ B*tch From Da Souf ” breakout rapper Mulatto in a baby blue bodysuit, followed in quick succession by rapper and “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” cast member Sukihana and rapper and OnlyFans mogul Rubi Rose sporting bright red thigh-high boots.

The video closes out on one last shot of Normani dropping into the splits before Cardi and Megan scamper away, leaving fans with one burning question: When is Normani finally going to drop that album?

The wait is finally over, Bardi Gang and Hotties.

The track also serves as Cardi’s first original release since 2019’s “Press,” and arrives as she works on the follow-up to Invasion of Privacy .

Cardi teased her sophomore album via Instagram back in April while celebrating the success of her debut effort: “Happy Birthday Miss INVASION OF PRIVACY. My first baby,” she wrote. “Im workin on her sister so I can birth her this year. Thank you everybody who support and still supports my album. Till this day is charting on Billboards 200.”

While we wait for more information about Cardi’s next project, you can stream “WAP” now on all major platforms and check out the official video above.

Fans can also purchase a vinyl copy of the track on Cardi’s website . Prior to dropping the song, Megan and Cardi hopped on a live stream together for a chat.

Megan is currently recovery from injuries sustained in a shooting incident involving Tory Lanez . The Houston rapper confirmed she had been wounded in both feet on July 15 while in a vehicle with Lanez and another female passenger.

“I’m not the type of person who can stay down for a long time,” she told Variety about the incident. “I don’t like to be sad or keep myself in a dark place, because I know it could be the worst thing happening, but the pain and the bad things don’t last for long.”

And it appears she was right. Hours before “WAP” hit streaming services, Megan announced she had secured a gig as Revlon’s newest global ambassador.

How “WAP” Became the Dirtiest No. 1 in Hot 100 History

The video is a smash, but it’s the song that put it on top..

This month marks the centennial of vaudeville performer Mamie Smith’s “ Crazy Blues ,” a watershed for both blues recordings and Black women’s cultural expression . Smith’s August 1920 recording, lamenting a love gone wrong, eventually sold about 2 million copies and, over the next two decades, led to a flurry of hit records by Black women singing about their bodily desires. These included Ma Rainey with “ Sweet Rough Man ” and Bessie Smith (no relation to Mamie) with “ Tain’t Nobody’s Biz-ness if I Do ” or, later, the not-at-all subtle “ Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl .” In her book Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music , critic Ann Powers describes how early “blues stars like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey served as erotic ambassadors.”

A century later, a pair of similarly frank erotic ambassadors are sitting atop the hit parade, demanding more than sugar. “WAP” by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion enters Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 1, fueled by tens of millions of views of its gleefully ribald, vividly acrobatic, shamelessly horny video, which brings to life such lyrics as “I want you to park that big Mack Truck right in this little garage.” Conservative critics are frothing that the song—whose title stands for “Wet Ass Pussy” and whose lyrics probably make it the dirtiest chart topper in Hot 100 history—has “ set the entire female gender back by 100 years . ” And the irony, when you think back to Bessie Smith, is that it quite literally has. As far as Cardi and Megan are concerned, it’s everybody’s business if they do.

This is the fourth Hot 100 topper for Belcalis “Cardi” Almánzar (after “ Bodak Yellow ,” “ I Like It ,” and her feature on Maroon 5’s “ Girls Like You ”) and the second for Megan “Thee Stallion” Pete (after her collaboration with Beyoncé on “ Savage ”), but it’s the first time either one of them has debuted in the penthouse. It also continues an empowering 2020 trend for one-off female pairings. In a pop year that has already seen No. 1s by Megan with Beyoncé, Doja Cat with Nicki Minaj , and Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande , this summit by hip-hop’s two reigning queens makes the loudest noise of all. “WAP” opens to the largest streaming total of the year to date: 93 million U.S. streams, which probably could have made the song No. 1 even if it hadn’t sold a single dollar download or gotten any radio play.

That streaming total not only handily beats the best weeks of Roddy Ricch’s winter monster “ The Box ” (which maxed out at 77 million in late January), it ranks as the top streaming debut ever by any song in its first week. While considerably lower than the all-time streaming record of 143 million set last year by Lil Nas X’s “ Old Town Road ” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, among songs by women, Cardi and Megan’s streaming total ranks second on the all-time list, just behind the 94-million peak week for Grande’s 2018 smash “ Thank U, Next .” Grande’s hit racked up its highest streams after the belated launch of its video, which was packed with celebrity cameos and pop culture references and generated its share of headlines . And the “WAP” video? It came freighted not only with its own share of celebrity gawking —including an appearance from one token white celebrity, Kylie Jenner, whom half the internet wished hadn’t shown up —but also headlines that made the ones that “Next” inspired look rather tame.

This is one of those moments in this long-running Slate series where you probably think I don’t need to tell you why, broadly speaking, this song is No. 1. Whether or not you’ve been following the tick-tock of takes on “WAP” over the past two weeks, one look at that video will give you an idea. Sure, the visual was vital to the success of the audible, even if you’re not actually hearing the original song in that video. To ensure maximum YouTube play, Cardi B—who is setting up her forthcoming second album— agreed to sync the clip not to the song’s original, unexpurgated “Wet Ass Pussy” lyrics but rather to the bowdlerized, radio-permissible “Wet and Gushy,” which, cleverly, winds up sounding filthier somehow. (If you’d like to study the uncensored lyrics more closely, the duo’s team has provided a  lyric video illustrated with a cornucopia of food metaphors.)

Even if you’re down with Cardi and Megan’s no-holds-barred sex-positive feminism—which, to be clear, I am—skeptics might wonder whether this is really the No. 1 song in America or just the No. 1 video. When it comes to the charts, is the (ladies’ quest for) tail wagging the dog?

Seven years after Billboard added YouTube data to the Hot 100 and some of us critics fretted aloud that we might see dance crazes and gaudy spectacle overtake the chart , “WAP” might appear to some to be Exhibit A. But in the YouTube era, we have been confronted before by hit songs overpowered by their videos. The actual Exhibit A might be Childish Gambino’s 2018 hit “ This Is America ,” a song that, like “WAP,” entered the Hot 100 on top and was the eventual, unlikely Grammy winner for Record and Song of the Year. Even before that Donald Glover conversation piece about America’s history of racism and violence, there were other hits powered to the top by videos serving up exposed flesh. Robin Thicke’s now-infamous “ Blurred Lines ” was boosted in the summer of 2013 by its video featuring nude (in one NSFW version, topless) supermodels. Later that year, Miley Cyrus’ “ Wrecking Ball ” made a huge pole vault to No. 1 upon the release of its clothing-optional clip; three months later, it went back to the top spot driven by an affectionate parody video in which a bearded fan stripped down to his undies and rode a yoga ball in homage to Cyrus. And in 2014, Nicki Minaj scored her biggest hit to date, the No. 2 “ Anaconda ,” thanks to its posterior-celebrating video, which scored then-record YouTube views . (Minaj missed the Hot 100’s No. 1 spot due to unlucky timing, dropping her track the same week as Taylor Swift’s smash “ Shake It Off ” … which, come to think of it, had its own controversial video featuring twerking butts .)

So: Show some skin, top the charts, right? Except shaking butt doesn’t work if you don’t have the song to back it up. Does anybody remember Jennifer Lopez–Iggy Azalea teamup “ Booty ”? I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t. The 2014 video, a seeming (un)dress rehearsal for “WAP,” served up the veteran Latin pop superstar and the then-hottest new female rapper, just months after she had scored the Song of the Summer , writhing and jiggling while singing and rapping about their eponymous assets. And yet the track was, pardon the expression, a stiff, debuting in the Top 20 on a week’s worth of video views and plummeting out of the Top 40 a week later. The song did fine in clubs but was a nonentity at radio. Even in the YouTube age, a sexy video can’t save a fundamentally boring song.

And “WAP” is anything but boring. Among the points that have been more gently debated in the media is whether the song is worthy of the hype surrounding it. It’s not my absolute favorite by either Cardi or Megan—I’d nominate either “ Be Careful ” or “I Like It” for the former and “Savage” for the latter—but it’s smartly constructed and often dazzling. Right from the jump, the track builds off a witty sample that’s a classic in the history of Baltimore club music : rapper Al “T” McLaran’s throaty, chanting hook about some “whores in this house,” from DJ Frank Ski’s song of the same name . The track is the handiwork of production team Ayo N Keyz , who also worked with Cardi on her studio debut, Invasion of Privacy , and—from that sample to the song’s rubbery thump—channel her winning, unfiltered persona. In terms of the actual rapping, Cardi deploys her usual mix of two parts bravado to one part bravura rhyming. But Cardi is most generous in showcasing her guest, Megan, who is the song’s blazing lyrical technician. Megan’s triple-time cadence on lines like “Gobble me, swallow me, drip down the side of me” put me in mind of Bun B’s head-spinning rhymes on Jay-Z’s 20-year-old classic “ Big Pimpin’ ”—apropos, since both Megan and Bun B hail from Houston’s rap scene and are reportedly mutual fans .

Yes, the song is worthy, and for all the attention the video is getting, the numbers show that more Americans are consuming it as a song. Buried deep in Billboard’s rundown of the track’s many chart feats is the revelation that, among songs by women, it pulled the biggest-ever week of on-demand U.S. audio streams at services like Spotify (edging out yet another Grande smash, last year’s “ 7 Rings ”). Its audio streaming number of 54.7 million is more than half of its total first-week streams of 93 million—meaning the video is not taking the lion’s ( tiger’s ?) share. Another data point: “WAP” sold 125,000 copies, a staggering sum in an age where the week’s top-selling download might shift one-fifth of that number. Yes, that sales total was fueled in part by the now-common gimmick of limited-edition physical singles packaged with instant downloads—but that’s still a whole lot of people who wanted to own “WAP” as a recording, staring at nothing more lurid than its bright pink vinyl .

Predictably, the only place “WAP” didn’t come out on top is on the airwaves. Its 11.6-million-impression radio audience is too low to make Billboard’s Radio Songs chart (where, by the way, the Weeknd’s enduring techno-pop smash “ Blinding Lights ” this week sets a record for most weeks atop radio playlists, surpassing a 22-year-old song by the Goo Goo Dolls ). “WAP” has made inroads at rap radio , where it’s already a Top 20 hit, and R&B/hip-hop radio , where it’s in the Top 30. But as I noted above, the song’s FCC-skirting “clean” version, “Wet and Gushy,” isn’t exactly mild fare for family car rides. I could be wrong about the song’s eventual radio-friendliness— I’ve been wrong before —but let’s say, like the jarring “This Is America,” the licentious “WAP” never becomes a big radio hit. Does that matter?

Probably not anymore. The song is already, instantly at No. 1 because we now have better ways of measuring the reach of libidinous jams. For comparison, take a quick trip with me in the wayback machine to this month in 1987, when the No. 2 song in America was George Michael’s blunt and then-shocking “ I Want Your Sex .” (I know, “Don’tcha think it’s time you had sex with me?” sounds downright wholesome next to Cardi’s “Bring a bucket and a mop for this wet-ass pussy.”) Michael’s supposed ode to “monogamy” —something he had to say to placate moralizers and MTV—was a bestseller in the age of AIDS, a single that eventually went platinum at a time when 45 sales were slumping and few singles even went gold. The week “Sex” peaked at No. 2, it was the bestselling song in the country , reportedly by a massive margin, but it had already peaked at No. 5 at radio stations, which were leery of playing it. (Many stations resorted to editing the track to repeat Michael’s line “I want your love” over and over , removing the “sex” entirely.) Because the Hot 100 back then used a pre-computerized formula where the magnitude of a top seller couldn’t be quantified (i.e., a top song selling 200,000 copies or 50,000 copies would be functionally equivalent in the chart’s math), the massiveness of George Michael’s sales couldn’t overcome his handicap at radio, and the song peaked in the runner-up slot. Whereas now, a song like Cardi and Megan’s, with overwhelming digital streams and sales, doesn’t need radio to dominate the chart—even if Cardi still cared enough about radio gatekeepers to produce the “Gushy” version.

We’ve come a long way in 33 years: from a paean to sex whose author, a closeted gay man , felt compelled to call it an ode to fidelity and couplehood and ran up against cultural anxiety anyway, to a bald demand for gratification by a pair of liberated Black women that has already won in the court of public opinion. “WAP” doesn’t need me to stick up for it: From newspaper columnists to pop critics , the acclaim is pretty much universal, and only the most risible right-wing clowns are bloviating against it, almost as if Cardi herself set them up as straw men . Not just her lust but her joy is infectious . The thing I love most about its sample of “Whores in This House”—what reminded me of those century-old recordings by Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Bessie Smith—is how Al McLaran’s gutbucket vocal ties the song back to the origins of the blues. The great news, though, is neither Cardi nor Megan has the blues at all.

The feeling that I had yesterday, ya’ll really had me tears. From my fans to people that [are] probably not really my fans, they were showing so much love and support for this new song.

“I just wanna say thank ya’ll so much. Ya’ll don’t even know how ya’ll had me feeling,” she continued. “Ya’ll had me f*cking crying.”

Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion "WAP"

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion  dominated the Billboard Hot 100  with their sexually liberating No. 1 hit “WAP.”

The two rappers sample Frank Ski’s Baltimore club staple “Whores in This House,” while the wet-and-wild music video features Normani ,  Rosalía , Kylie Jenner, Mulatto, Sukihana and Rubi Rose. Although the song made headlines for its explicit nature and angered many conservative politicians, Cardi said her music “is always going to make a woman feel like a bad bi—,” and Megan   noted that this moment was for women in music to come together.

“When I saw all of the politicians in an uproar about mine and Cardi’s ‘WAP,’ I was just really taken back,” she told  Time  after the publication named her as one of the 100 most influential people in 2020. “Like, why is this your focus right now? If you have an issue with what I’m saying don’t listen to it. Tune out, ’cause I didn’t ask you to tune in.”

Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion Drop Steamy ‘WAP’ Video

At long last, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have teamed up on a track, “WAP,” released Thursday night along with a steamy music video . In a live YouTube conversation before dropping the new visual, the pair discussed the making of the clip, gave each other kudos and expressed some anxiety about it coming out. Cardi referenced criticisms she had seen levied against her on social media for taking time between releases. The video, which Cardi described as being censored due to it having some “nasty ass shit,” is still plenty sensual.

In the new visual, Cardi and Megan wander through a mansion, where lavish rooms are occupied by beautiful women, including some very recognizable cameos: Kylie Jenner , Normani and Rosalía , to name a few. In between, Cardi drops a verse in a leopard-printed room complete with an actual leopard, while Megan takes the vocal lead in a bathroom that includes white tigers. “I’m talking wap, wap, wap,” they rap on the chorus. “That’s some wet and gushy.”

Cardi B was one of several featured artists at April’s Virtual PlayOn Fest , one of the earliest virtual festivals during the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival streamed an archival set from the rapper, along with over 65 other acts. She also joined Senator Bernie Sanders for an Instagram Live discussion on coronavirus.

Last month, Megan Thee Stallion suffered gunshot wounds during an incident involving singer-rapper Tory Lanez. She later detailed the incident on Instagram Live, explaining that she had been shot in both feet and that she was the victim of “a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me.”

“It’s not funny,” she continued referring to various online rumors that had cropped up in the wake of the incident. “There’s nothing to joke about. There was nothing for y’all to start making fake stories about. I didn’t put my hands on nobody. I didn’t deserve to get shot.”

The ‘WAP’ Video Director Breaks Down The Making Of Cardi And Meg’s Viral Clip

Carolyn Droke

Upon the video’s release, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “ WAP ” video went instantly viral. The song’s raunchy lyrics combined with the NSFW visuals recieved reactions from everyone from Fox News host Tucker Carlson to even the animal rights organization PETA . The video’s director, Colin Tilley, was pleasantly surprised about the video’s overwhelming response, especially with the multitude of memes created from the visual. In an interview, Tilley broke down the filming process, behind-the-scenes footage, and all the challenges the production crew faced along the way.

“You start seeing people’s reactions and you’re like, ‘Okay, I think we were right here,'” Tilley said about the video’s breakout success in an interview with Genius. Tilley continued that the production window for the shoot was fairly short and his crew only had three weeks to make Cardi’s vision a reality. After brainstorming with the rapper, Tilley knew he wanted to make the video have “a little bit more innocence than the song.”

While most of the filming went off without a hitch, there were a few difficulties along the way. In particular, the scene where the two rappers are covered in snakes led to a few problems. Not only did a snake pee on Cardi , but one managed to wrap itself around Meg’s neck and body. “A lot of the snakes in this scene were real and it was pretty much the funniest thing ever to see their reactions to seeing some of the snakes at first,” Tilley said. “I don’t think I would put those snakes on me.”

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” Video Takes Us for a Ride

In this most stressful summer, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's “WAP” was the song so many of us desperately needed—an unapologetic anthem to vaginal lubrication accompanied by an utterly delightful music video of the duo gyrating their way through a fun house. And while much has been said of the acronym (google it) and of the certified freaks (seven days a week!) rapping about it, less attention has been paid to their fictional domicile, a decorative orgasm of sorts that more than holds its own against our empowered hosts. Shall we get gushy about it? We shall.

Zoom in on the gates, a pair of baroque confections that swing open to reveal an arbor of pruned azaleas, bushes of which ring a pebbled motor court. At its center sits a water fountain of two female figures back to back, a kind of flowing mammary monument that perhaps owes some creative debt to Kara Walker’s recent installation at the Tate Modern . Beyond rises the house itself: a sprawling mansion, vaguely château-like in spirit, with symmetrical gabled volumes that protrude from its splayed form. Water cascades down the steps from the double front doors. Has a pipe burst? Not quite. But do get a bucket and a mop.

Inside, we are treated to a warren of over-the-top, shall we say slick rooms—from the entry hall, with its gilded molding, zigzag tile, and anatomically accurate water features, to Cardi’s leopard-clad chamber, with Louis XV Revival chairs to support her splits. Then there’s Megan’s suite, lined in what appear to be perfectly bookmatched white tiger skins. (Is that even possible? We'll suspend disbelief.) And the subterranean mechanical room, a Memphis -inspired fever dream of striped pipes and valves. And Normani’s homage to houndstooth. And what appears to be the Sackler Wing at the Met , only minus the Temple of Dendur. Oh and how can we forget that indoor sandpit, an improbably arid decorating scheme if ever there was one. Who is to say the intention, but it sure reminded this viewer—and perhaps this viewer alone—of Walter de Maria’s Earth Room.

The lyrics leave me with so many design questions. What is the best garage for a Mack Truck? What is the proper pot for macaroni? What else might "big D" stand for…Decoupage? Directoire? Demilune? But more on all that another day. I’m suddenly reminded that in the event of a flood I would have no idea whatsoever how to turn off the water in my house.…

Cardi B Returns with New Single 'WAP' Featuring Megan Thee Stallion

Bardi’s back.

After a nine-month hiatus, Cardi B returns with her highly-anticipated single “WAP (Wet Ass Pu**y)” featuring Megan Thee Stallion. Produced by Ayo n Keyz, the freaky bedroom banger finds the rappers exchanging nasty verses over a sample of Frank Ski’s 1992 track “There’s Some Whores in This House.”

“Now from the top, make it drop / That’s some wet ass pu**y,” raps Cardi on the explicit version. “Now get a bucket and a mop / That’s some wet ass pu**y.”

“The song is really nasty. The song always been nasty,” Cardi told Hot 97. “My verses and the hook has been the same since before Megan was there. So it just always been a nasty song and it’s like, ‘Who’s saying more nastier things than Megan?'”

Along with the song, they have debuted an epic Colin Tilley-directed video, which features cameos from Kylie Jenner, Normani, Rosalía, Mulatto, Rubi Rose, and Suki Hana. Donning head-turning looks, the ladies take over a mansion, where surprises await behind each door. A ferocious Cardi creeps with cheetahs in one room while rocking cheetah-print pasties, while the Houston hottie shows off her flexibility while surrounded by white tigers. They later get hands on while splashing in a pool of water in another steamy scene.

Cardi revealed that their outfits had to be flown in from overseas, but COVID delayed things. “It just took so long to get it done,” she said during a live YouTube chat with Megan.

“WAP” is the first single from Cardi’s long-awaited sophomore album, the follow-up to her 2018 debut Invasion of Privacy .

‘WAP’ Is Good, Raunchy Fun. On TikTok, It’s at Home.

Men rap and sing about sex in preposterous and sometimes awkward detail all the time. It’s beyond time that the same courtesy is extended to women like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and ppcocaine.

Is the “WAP” hubbub over yet?

As culture-war gasoline goes, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s duet, a seamless union that has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the last two weeks, is high octane. It will be remembered for its fount of collar-dampening metaphors, for its David LaChappelle meets M.C. Escher video, and also for the enemies it made — the video of the conservative commentator Ben Shapiro doing a dramatically nasal lyric reading may well be studied for generations.

Yes, sure, “WAP” is salacious, bawdy, unerringly humid, vividly detailed. Perhaps distractingly sordid, if you’re unfamiliar with the work of, say, Trina, or Madonna, or Philip Roth, or Jeanette Winterson, or Egon Schiele, or Bernardo Bertolucci, or Dr. Ruth Westheimer, or Call Her Daddy.

But it is also emblematic: Sexual confidence and forthrightness are now the norm. Men rap and sing about sex in preposterous and sometimes awkward detail all the time, and rarely does anyone blink. It’s beyond time that the same courtesy is extended to women.

The conflagration over “WAP” has been predictable and fatiguing — the morality police working overtime against the sexual agency of Black women, a resurgence of shaming and grievance that felt like a relic of an earlier time.

Over on TikTok, though, “WAP” is experienced as what it truly is: blue humor, feel-good titillation, something to giggle along to with your friends, something to tease your parents with. The theater of raunch is part of the app’s lingua franca, as central to it as tightly coiled dance routines.

The million-plus clips made to snippets of “WAP” are just a drop in a very large bucket of playful lasciviousness that includes videos made to songs by established artists like City Girls; to one-off random finds with provocative lyrics; and maybe most excitingly, to the small but quickly spreading catalog of the young rapper ppcocaine.

In this ecosystem, “WAP” is a neutered provocation, a soundtrack for teen (and teen-adjacent) mischief and a light jab to their parents. Most vividly, this family-friendly tug of war played out between the wildly popular influencer Addison Rae and her mother, Sheri.

First, Sheri posted a video threatening to release her version of the floor-caressing “WAP” dance that’s been going around the app. Not long after, Addison released one of herself doing the dance, captioning it, “I had to do it before my mom did.” Her mother, not to be outdone, released hers soon after, with the note, “hope this teaches you to be nice to your mama.” (Her father did one , too, for … good measure? Revenge?)

Loads of the clips made to “WAP” revolve around family in some way: young people trying to make their parents blush, parents trying to make their kids blush, or in some cases, doing the dance alongside them. There are amusing videos of parents reminding their children, tweaking the song’s frisky sample, “There’s some chores in this house.” These clips portray “WAP” not as a line in the sand for explicitness in pop culture, but as an in-joke for people who don’t question what women are allowed to talk about.

The dynamic is similar in videos set to some particularly ribald lyrics by Yung Miami of City Girls, from “Leave Em Alone,” a song by the R&B singer Layton Greene. In the verse, Yung Miami is exasperated at a partner’s dismal sexual performance. On TikTok, young people rap the words to their elders, waiting to see how wide their eyes get.

When sexual frankness is viewed through the lens of piety, it gets flattened. TikTok’s vignettes are a far more forgiving and creative playing field — a place for self-exploration, comedy, and learning on the sly. Sometimes, kids just like saying words they’ve been told not to, hence the thousands of videos set to snippets from YSL Jalen’s “We All Tryna ____ (I Got My Lil Homie Right Here)” and YN Jay and Louie Ray’s “Coochie.”

But TikTok is an emulative medium, which means that the artists who truly thrive there — who gain traction for more than just an offhand thing they might say — are full-service heroes that fans and creators can embody, absorb and then recirculate.

Right now, that hero is ppcocaine, the brat laureate of the current era of TikTok. A 19-year-old former adult dancer, ppcocaine (formerly Trap Bunnie Bubbles) raps like a boisterous, animated, cheeky toddler. “3 Musketeers,” recorded with her friend NextYoungin, has become one of the definitive songs of this summer, owing to its absurdist flirtations — “Tell lil shorty come here, I’m tryna blow her back out, walking funny for the year” — and ppcocaine’s rowdy chirps, which suggest Kidz Bop Kids covering 6ix9ine.

ppcocaine is gay, and “3 Musketeers” has become something of a lesbian anthem on TikTok. When Charli D’Amelio, the most followed person on TikTok, posted a video dancing to it , she was received rapturously. (One comment noted she was “dressing alt and dancing to a lesbian song. Shes on our side.”)

“3 Musketeers” is one of a handful of playfully lewd ppcocaine songs that have become TikTok grammar in the last two months: the lullabyish “DDLG” has been used for videos where people break down the types of people they’re attracted to (or not), and “PJ,” with its midsong hard reset and its encouragement to dance, has been used for countless comedic clips.

With its rascally joy and bad-kid energy, ppcocaine’s music is optimal for the moment. While Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s built-in fame placed “WAP” at the center of a culture-war debate that has in truth been long settled, ppcocaine gets to operate outside of that bad-faith scrutiny. But probably not for long: A few days ago on TikTok, ppcocaine did her own version of the “WAP” dance. She posted the video on Instagram , too, asking people to tag Cardi and Megan — a wayward child who can’t wait to be adopted.

Biden Is Posting Through It on TikTok

Portrait of Katja Vujić

The state of U.S. politics is not looking great following last night’s horrific debate , which saw Biden stumbling to get words out while Trump’s repeated lies went unchecked. The 90-minute circus saw the two candidates argue over who was better at golf as well as who was more supportive of the most destructive bombing campaign in recent history. Biden’s performance was so dismal that it was immediately met with widespread calls for him to bow out of the race .

So how’s the mood at Biden HQ? Well, his official TikTok account appears to be posting through his debate flop with such stubborn delusion that it’s almost impressive. Whoever manages @BidenHQ has been busy reposting extremely selective footage from the debate featuring dead-eyed Gen-Zers saying things like “Damn, Biden just dragged Trump” — which, let’s just say, was definitely not the consensus on X last night .

The account also revealed that after stopping by a watch party where he confidently declared “we’re going to beat this guy,” Biden took a victory lap at a local Waffle House. A clip from the end of the night showed Joe and Jill shaking hands and taking selfies, overlaid with text that read “No way the Bidens pulled up to Waffle House after the debate 😭😭😭” and captioned “bruh 😭.” Meanwhile, the comments filled with lines like “And… that’s where the campaign ended,” and “bro he’s cooked 😭.”

Presidential debate sees Trump deflect and Biden trip over words

President Joe Biden delivered a shaky, halting performance while his Republican rival Donald Trump battered him with a series of often false attacks at their debate on Thursday, as the two oldest presidential candidates ever exchanged personal insults ahead of the November election. Biden struggles in first joust with Trump: 5 takeaways from the presidential debate

The candidates clashed over abortion, the economy, and immigration, and they launched personal attacks on one another..

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump clashed in a high-stakes debate Thursday , lobbing personal insults and staking out stark policy differences to set the stage for the bitter campaign ahead.

In the first-ever debate between a current and former president, Biden and Trump began without a handshake.

"You're the sucker. You're the loser," Biden said at one point, referring to reports that Trump used those words to describe American service members.

"Our veterans and our soldiers can't stand this guy," Trump fired back. "They can't stand him."

Biden trails his Republican rival in most battleground state polls and entered the debate needing to reset the narrative about his candidacy and inject new life into his campaign. But a hoarse voice and uneven performance spoiled those goals and rattled many Democrats into a panic.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

The mission for Trump was to continue seizing on Americans' anxieties about the economy and security at the U.S. southern border.

Yet the former president also needed to convince wary independent voters , who − given his recent conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, and three other pending criminal cases − may hold serious misgivings about his character and returning him to power.

Here are five takeaways from the debate:

Biden, with hoarse voice, fails to ease anxieties on age

The 81-year-old Biden didn't do himself any favors in terms of easing concerns about his age and acuity − which polling shows continues to be one of his biggest liabilities.

Biden's voice was raspy and low from the start. (His campaign said he has a cold.) He stumbled over words and had to correct himself with numbers. On one occasion, the president appeared to lose his train of thought, concluding with "we finally beat Medicare."

Trump, who is 78, was energetic and clear. He jumped at that moment saying: "He did beat Medicare, he beat it to death."

Although Biden did better as the debate continued, he was slow out of the gate, allowing Trump to steer control.

"I really don't know what he said at the end of that sentence," Trump said during one exchange on immigration. "And I don't think he knows what he said either."

Ahead of the debate, Biden joked about being on "performance enhancers" in a social media post shortly before the start of the debate – mocking the conspiracies pushed by Trump and some Republicans that Biden would have to take drugs to keep up.

But such attacks from Republicans will only continue after Biden's performance Thursday.

Two presidents, two economies

Voters continuously rank the economy and inflation as among the top issues on their minds, and it was the first subject raised by the CNN moderators, Dana Bash and Jake Tapper.

Biden walked a tightrope in his response, trying to note his economic achievements without discounting the sting of high prices. He started off by blaming any economic woes on Trump's handling of the COVID-19 virus in 2020, arguing a free fall started when unemployment spiked on his predecessor’s watch. The president also called out the 2017 tax cuts as a giveaway to the rich.

"Things were in chaos," he said.

For much of his answer, Biden spotlighted the gains under his administration such as record-low unemployment and lowering prescription drug costs.

But as voters express that they’re still feeling inflation hangover, the Democratic incumbent acknowledged: "there’s more to be done."

Compared to four years ago, Trump took a more methodical approach in his responses throughout the debate, but he didn’t take that lying down. He argued the U.S. economy was roaring before the pandemic and that currently, “inflation is killing our country.”

Asked about his proposal to impose 10% tariff on all imports, Trump defended the idea against criticism that it will drive prices even higher. Instead, he said, it will stop foreign countries from, “ripping us off.”

Clashes over abortion and Roe v Wade

One of the more substantive exchanges during the 90-minute debate was when the conversation turned to abortion, an issue the Biden campaign thinks it can use to its advantage in the election.

Like he has throughout the campaign, he blamed Trump for the overturning of Roe v. Wade with his three Supreme Court justice appointments.

"It's been a terrible thing, what you've done," Biden said, adding that he would reinstate the protections of Roe v. Wade if reelected.

Trump has been careful when discussing abortion on the campaign trail, as many evangelical voters want the GOP to pursue a national ban on abortion but such a move might turn off moderates.

The former president did give a nod to anti-abortion voters when he accused Biden and the Democrats of wanting to: "rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month and kill the baby."

Biden said Democrats only favor legal late-term abortions when the mother's life is in jeopardy.

Trump said he won’t block abortion medication and that he "believes in exceptions" to allow abortions in cases of rape and incest.

"We think the Democrats are the radicals, not the Republicans," he said.

'Rat's nest:' Immigration, border

Trump flexed his muscles the most when the debate turned to the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, accusing Biden of allowing a wave of crime endangering Americans.

"We are living right now in a rat's nest," Trump said. "Every state is now a border state and it’s because of his ridiculous, insane and very stupid policies."

Biden outlined how his administration sought a bipartisan border security deal in Congress earlier this year, but that Trump torpedoed the plan. He also reminded viewers about Trump's past controversies.

"When he was president, he was separating babies from their mothers and putting them in cages, making sure they were the families were separated," Biden said.

Trump ducked answering when pressed by CNN's moderators to explain his plans to carry out the "largest domestic deportation operation" in U.S. history, and whether his next administration would deport all undocumented immigrants, and instead returned to his attacks.

"We're literally an uncivilized country now," he said.

Things get personal on Hunter Biden, Trump's conviction

Biden and Trump have never been warm, and the lack of a handshake at the start of the debate was noticeable.

The animus toward each other couldn't be denied as things got ugly with personal attacks.

Biden brought up Trump's conviction in a case that allegedly involved "having sex with a porn star," and that Trump lost a $83.3 million civil judgment for "molesting a woman."

Trump responded by calling out the president's son, Hunter Biden, who has been convicted on federal gun charge and claimed that without evidence Joe Biden will be a convicted felon in the future.

When both were asked about their age, Biden and Trump both said their physical health isn't an issue. But at one point the two men rabbled about their athletic prowess, and even fought over who had a better golf handicap.

"Let’s not be children," Trump said.

Biden replied: "You are a child."
