Visiting another country or province without travel insurance can be a costly mistake. Indeed, did you know that an overnight stay in a hospital in the United States can exceed $14,000 CAD? Some countries might even refuse to help you if you are unable to prepay for treatment.

It is not fun to think about, but travel insurance is a necessity when you are away from home . It guarantees your ability to get and pay for health care, if and when you need it. Beyond medical emergencies, travel insurance can also help with flight issues and lost luggage, amongst other things.

That being said, what to think about CARP travel insurance in Canana? What coverage is CARP providing? For what price? What are its pros and cons? Read our review on CARP's medical travel insurance, get a quote, and see how the competitors fare.

Canadian Travel Insurance Review

CARP Travel Insurance Review

The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) is a national, non-profit organization that advocates for a better quality of life for Canadians as they age. You do not need to be a CARP member to get travel insurance through CARP.

CARP previously provided travel insurance through The McLennan Group Insurance, but now CARP’s travel insurance products are provided by CAA Travel Insurance, a nationally licensed insurance agency.

CAA operates across Canada, but each province has a separate subsection of CAA. In BC, the subsection is BCAA. In Alberta, it is AMA.

You can compare your CARP insurance quote with many similar policies by using Best Quote Travel Insurance . BestQuote lets you compare travel insurance quotes for several different companies at once!

  • It is easy to complete the online quote form, and you can retrieve a stored quote via email
  • No upper age limit on plans
  • You can save money by choosing a higher deductible
  • Up to $5 million for a medical emergency
  • In most cases, bills are directly paid

Disadvantages

  • Not all products are available in all provinces
  • Discounts vary depending on your province
  • You need to be a CAA member to access a CAA discount
  • The CARP x CAA option is not available in Quebec

CARP Emergency Medical Insurance Plans

You can initially choose from four types of insurance before being directed to the CAA club in your province. You can change the plan you want to go for after this stage. The four types of insurance are:

  • Emergency Medical Insurance
  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance
  • Emergency Medical and Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance
  • Visitors to Canada Insurance

Saving Money

  • You can choose a higher deductible to save on your premium. The deductible options available to you are dependent on your province.
  • For a limited time, if you call CAA for a travel insurance quote, you can get a FREE 1-year CARP membership or renewal, plus a 1-year Zoomer Magazine subscription or renewal.
  • If you are a CAA (or AMA or BCAA) member, you get a discount on your policy (up to 11% off)

Full refunds are available before the start of the trip. For a full refund, they must be requested and approved prior to the original departure date or effective date of the trip. Past the effective date of policy coverage, a partial premium refund may be available, provided no claim has been paid, incurred, or reported on the policy.

You Need to Know

  • You need a Canadian government health insurance plan (GHIP) to be eligible for a CARP insurance policy. Your GHIP must also be in place for the duration of coverage.
  • Policies and coverage can change at any time without warning. Please check your policy carefully.

How to Learn More

You can learn more about CARP Travel Insurance products online or by calling 1-833-673-3030.

We all miss travel. With vaccinations, and booster shots, peaking, resulting in protection from serious infection requiring hospitalization, and travel insurance companies now offering limited – but good – coverage against Covid ( call for details ), perhaps NOW is the time to start making plans for travel in the future.

To help with that planning, CARP members and their friends can enjoy some travel inspiration with weekly 50-60 minute presentations on  Tuesdays at 6:30  Atlantic Time where different guest travel suppliers will be doing presentations on what their companies offer generally, and one unique aspect/itinerary/location that they offer. (See list further below…)

*Please note that travel restrictions and changes to tour operator policies that may be discussed within the presentations are subject to change as the Covid Crisis is dealt with.

Be sure to  sign up early and be at your computer for these interesting and lively learning experience, often about your own bucket-list travel dreams – and tell your family, colleagues and friends !

About our CARP Travel Webinars:

  • As time passes, almost 90% of eligible Nova Scotians have had 2 or more vaccinations.
  • And since much travel is booked a year or so in advance, it may be a good idea to start preparation for travel possibilities in mid-2022 and onward.
  • Check with Danny at  [email protected]  or 902 431 4932 re your travel plans or if you have any questions about travel…
  • If you have any suggestions  for other  popular  bucket-list destinations /itineraries, please let Danny know.

River Cruises

Most river cruises are similar in that they offer accommodations in cabins from “below water” to elevated levels, have all meals included, usually have wine or beer included with meals, and a quality excursion in each port. You may want to add at least one day in embarkation port and perhaps a day or two at disembarkation port.  Flights are usually separate though some companies offer flights included. Some offer “Theme cruises”: for example, wine or Christmas cruises.

  • AMA Waterways River Cruise: (Sandra Gardiner)  Wine theme River Cruises  in different parts of Europe (we learned to appreciate fine wine) plus a brief look at other itineraries.
  • Amadeus River Cruise: (Marcus Leskovar) Christmas Market cruises . Late November and December, a typical Danube River cruise becomes something very special around Christmas time.
  • American Queen Steamboat Company: (Barbara Davis)  Lower Mississippi River Cruise (New Orleans to Memphis), offering all-inclusive US-based river cruises on an authentic paddle wheeler boat. An experience we fully enjoyed!  (Other boats available on other rivers.)
  • Avalon Waterways: (Jennifer Zammit) Coach Tour/River cruise, 7 night Rhine river cruise with 4 night coach tour of the famous   Oberammergau Passion Play .  Cruise line with beds facing balcony windows.
  • CroisiEurope Cruises: with Laura Murphy Regional Sales Manager.   We will look at a European itinerary most other river cruise companies do not do:  the Loire Valley , have a peek at  barge cruising in France : a small-group-alternative to a typical river cruise, and  stunning cruise tours in Africa  with safaris both on land and by water. We may even have a brief look at what Croisi offers on  the Po River and Venice – if time allows.
  • Crystal River Cruises: Juliana Schmidt discusses this 5½ * river cruise line in Europe along the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers.  Learn about the differences that a 5½* river cruise can offer you.
  • Pandaw River Cruise: (Sven Zika) Vietnam, Red River , Ha Long Bay and Irawaddy.  River in North Vietnam that is a superb – one of the best we have experienced – cultural experience.
  • Riviera River Cruises: (Marilyn Conroy) Solo River cruises , no single supplement. Presentation focuses on the Danube River.
  • Scenic River Cruise: (Tracy Daniels)  Asia, Mekong River, Cambodia , Vietnam.  Starting in Cambodia with Angkor Wat: a cultural tour of middle to South Vietnam.
  • St Lawrence Waterways Cruise Line: Come aboard and relax! See the real Canada, the original Canada, as unspoiled as when the voyageurs moved up and down its waterways, as modern as the great St. Lawrence International Seaway and its spectacular locks and man-made canals. Experience the beauty and the history of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers for 4 to 7 nights on a classic steamboat.
  • Uniworld: (Federico Berardinucci) Venice, Po River plus visits to surrounding islands often docking for the night in Venice.  A wonderful way to see and fully experience Venice.
  • Viking River Cruises: (Jordana Botting)  Egypt, Nile River plus ocean cruising. Viking “does it right” when it comes to touring the Nile, with all its history, temples and culture on this superb cruisetour.

Ocean Cruises

  • Atlas Voyages: Cathy Kasuma – Regional Sales Director, Eastern Canada. Learn about this new 5* cruise line with a focus on an Antarctica cruise. Luxe-adventure travel – blending luxury into expedition cruising.
  • Azamara Cruises: Margarita Peloso and I have a close look at this premium cruise line and in particular a transatlantic repositioning cruise which allows the cruise line to move from Europe to the Americas and vice-versa, twice a year at attractive prices plus several stops on each side of the Atlantic.  You should like lots of days at sea for this sailing.  We also look at a Panama Canal cruise.
  • Celebrity Cruises: (Brenda Yeomans)  The Galapagos Islands . A fine cruise line – we have been on 2 Celebrity cruises. Galapagos Islands are a bucket list trip.
  • Holland America: Alaska cruise/tour (Stephanie Tate-Croning) an in-depth look at a 7-night cruise on the Alaskan coast with views of imperiled-by-global-warming glaciers. Following the cruise talk, Stephanie discusses the post-cruise rail-tour that is available and gives you the opportunity to see some of Alaska by land.
  • Hurtigrutin Cruise line:  (Kristin Irz) We introduce you to their exciting destinations of Svalbard and West Africa. Hurtigruten Expeditions has the longest history and strongest legacy in polar waters, drawing on more than 125 years of pioneering experience. Their purpose-built expedition ships offer a friendly, small-ship ambiance and function as a comfortable base camp at sea. Being the world leader in expedition travel and world’s largest expedition cruise company, they believe that comes with great responsibility, and why they have chosen to lead by example, aiming to raise the standards for the entire cruise industry. As a company focused on innovation and technology, sustainability is at the core of their operations and inherent in every detail of Hurtigruten Expeditions.
  • NCL Ocean Cruise: (Sabrina Greca)  Hawaii Cruise (highlight) and Cape Town/Dubai (South Africa). The best option for a Hawaii cruise because it starts and ends in Hawaii – all 7 days are among the islands.  Wonderful cruise (one of the top 5 in our lives!)
  • Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines: (RCCL) Patricia Di Benedetto talks about the cruise line in general (wonderful for both adult-only and, in particular, families) and specifically my favourite Caribbean cruise itinerary – exotic Southern Caribbean cruise. This itinerary is “port heavy” – some place to visit every day!
  • Star Clippers: Cyndi Denman – Business Development Executive Star Clippers.   Cruising under sail in the Mediterranean . This experience – on my bucket list – is an extraordinary alternative to big ship cruising.
  • Virgin Voyages: Danielle Manegio – a new ocean cruise line by Richard Branson that focuses on adult-only cruising. Virgin throws out the “cruise dining rule book” by having no buffets onboard, no main dining room, no enforced formal wear, no assigned seating, and no assigned dining times.

Coach Tours

  • Atlantic Tours & Travel: (Richard Arnold, President) Circle Newfoundland & Labrador – a guided talk about our sister province in Atlantic Canada.  An at-home bucket list item for many including myself visiting the incredible diversity of both natural beauty and down-home friendliness of the Newfoundland people. Coach tour starts in Halifax and has various pickup points to the ferry in North Sydney. Also note the variety of day trips and short duration trips, mostly in Nova Scotia.
  • Collette Vacations Coach Tour: (Andrew Hau), health and safety and  Shades of Ireland . One of the first companies to sign up with CARP NS and a quality company that can include door-to-door service to take all complications away!
  • Europe Express: and Mark Yacker –  a coach tour company. Mark will focus on Portugal (beginning and finishing in the ancient capital city of Lisbon, you will go back to the times of the Romans, through the era of the Moorish kingdom – and into Portugal’s very exciting Age of Discovery) and Spain.
  • Exodus Travels and Canadian Geographic: Tony Perdomo and I will be looking at Exodus’ special relationship with Canadian Geographic (like National Geographic) for special tours involving their expertise around the world.  We also discuss the Africa Wildlife Foundation for Wildlife Foundation trips. Exodus has established relationships with local guides in every country that helps support the local economy.
  • Indus Travel: (Harish Shroff)  Bible Land tour: visit the Holy Land area: no focus on any particular religion (though that CAN be arranged), just a historical look at a land important to several major religions. Indus can arrange pretty well anything you want.
  • Insight Vacations: (Brad Ford) Coach tour,  Country Roads of Northern Italy to connect with a Venice (Po River) cruise – each can be booked separately OR together as a complete package. We have done this and it is a superb way to see a good part of Italy.
  • Intrepid Tours: Kaz Brown Industry Sales Manager – Americas.  A very well-known international coach touring company. Join us as we explore a trip to exotic Morocco with highlights Casablanca, the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. On my bucket list!
  • Kensington Tours: Samantha Gould, account executive for Kensington. Although Kensington has so much more to offer (as do ALL of the presenters’ companies) we will focus on a personal Heritage journey with Ancestry – looking into your heritage and background, usually in Europe.
  • SITA Tours: Join Mary Barnett and me as we discuss the benefits of this touring company that emphasizes women travel . Tonight’s presentation will focus on  Ancient Greece, Myths and Legends  and a trip to  Ancient Egypt .
  • Tauck: (Charmaine MacDonald) Experience Israel, Jordan and other exotic locales.
  • Tourcan Vacations: Africa Land Tour  (Phillip Solomon) basics of South Africa touring and safari. We have been to this area and Tourcan offers both wonderful group tours but also the ability to tailor-design a tour for as small as two people.
  • TourCan and PromPeru: (Phillip Solomon TourCan and Wendy Underwood PromPeru) an in-depth look at Lima, Cusco, The Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca and some post trip extensions like the Amazon River.   Machu Picchu in South America .
  • Trafalgar Tours: Coach tour (Ken Nickerson) A well-known international coach tour company that we are quite familiar with. This webinar focuses on In-Canada travel , with emphasis on Western Canada and the Rocky Mountains.
  • Anderson Vacations: with Darcie Guarderas, Director of Business Development for Anderson Vacations as we talk about visiting the little-known areas of the Alaska and the Yukon . We will also look at the South Pacific’s Cook Islands and perhaps even one of the most stringently locked-down countries in the world (but very popular) – New Zealand .

Caribbean Country Tourism Boards

  • Barbados: A close look at this English-speaking Caribbean country that is a vacation place in itself but also the starting point for several Southern Caribbean cruise lines. We have experienced it several times: lovely destination!
  • Costa Rica: With TAM Travel (Mauricio Castro and Raquel Montoya) Join us as we discover the “Pura Vida” (pure life) of the wonderful natural reserve of Costa Rica (we spent two weeks here). We will look at several of the prime tourist areas in the country and learn about zip lining and nature retreats in this beautiful country:
  • Cuba: Join me, Danny Almon and Cuban representative Nieves as we explore the different – and popular – regions of Cuba for off-resort excursions.  Places like Varadero, Havana, Cayo Coco, Caya Santa Maria and Holguin, among others. There will be a brief look at some resorts available.
  • Dominican Republic:  Yadira Henriquez, Representative of the Dominican Republic: a look at the most popular vacation areas in the Dominican Republic – Punta Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Samana . Watch as 3 representatives of popular resort chains take us on a tour of some of their properties.
  • Jamaica: Louise Paquette – Jamaica Tourist Board. We’ll have a good look at Negril, Montego Bay, Whitehouse, Ocho Rios even Kingston. We also look at popular destinations in all these touristic areas in Jamaica.
  • Mexico with Lomas Travel:   (Wilma Zambrano) We will get a close look at things to experience off-resort offered by Lomas Travel: things like several Mayan Ruin sites like Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum, XCaret eco-park, and Cenotes.
  • St Lucia: Richard Moss – Senior Sales Manager for St Lucia Tourism Authority will join me to have a closer look at this delightful Caribbean Island. We have visited several times and find it to be one of our favourites.

Miscellaneous Adventures

  • Country Walkers and VBT Bicycle Tours: Glenn Letch – join us as we look at what is offered by way of guided and self-guided walking and bicycle tours (including eBikes) for couples up to small groups in many parts of the world.
  • Couples Resorts 5*: (Desiree Rolle) Jamaica, adult only Couples resorts .  Four superb 5* resorts in Jamaica, all with totally different ambiances. One of my all-time favourites is Sans Souci…
  • Just You Solo Travels: Sarah Weetman Head of Sales UK Solo and small group tours  with a focus  Walking the Amalfi Coast  and a walking tour in Croatia. Every effort is made to ensure that your cost as a solo traveller is without the single supplement often required by tour operators.
  • Karisma Resorts 5*: (Sabrina Filatow)  adult only and family friendly resorts , many in Riviera Maya Mexico. A true local company owned by Mexican residents that gives back to the community. We have personally experienced many of the resorts and can attest to the high quality of food, service and accommodations.
  • Railbookers: Cris David and I will talk about this amazing company that has great relations with most train companies around the world and can help us book not only the train ride but also the hotels at the various stops and excursions on the itinerary.  Itineraries we will explore will be a Scottish rail trip and a cross-Canada rail trip which could include Rocky Mountaineer.  We will also look at a couple of other popular international itineraries, some of them true bucket list itineraries.
  • Rocky Mountaineer Canadian Train: Vacation (Tyler Harrison) comments on the RM experience in the Rocky Mountains ). This train ride through the Rockies is stellar (we have experienced it!) with train rides only during the day time so that nothing is missed. Guests can add extra days at beginning and end in high quality accommodations together with added excursions. Hint: we added this to an Alaska cruise and superb as the cruise was, the Rocky Mountaineer excelled the experience!
  • Universal Studios: Orlando (Lidia Markser), Business Development Manager – a look at Florida’s Universal Orlando Theme Park showing updates to presentation date and what guests can experience at this world class Florida Theme Park.  Best way to experience this Park is to stay on site, preferably in the upper levels of hotel accommodations which will allow you very special perks that justify the extra expense. We have been here several times.

Women’s Tours (see comments below in Solo Travel)

Solo Travel

What I have discovered in the almost 50 presentations I have hosted is that many companies are recognizing that solo travel is becoming universally recognized and these companies offer – at least on some of their itineraries – solo accommodations. And because, statistically, there seem to be more solo females travelling, the group of solo travellers on your trip is likely to be predominantly female.

  • Just You Solo Travels: Sarah Weetman Head of Sales UK Solo and small group tours  with a focus  Walking the Amalfi Coast  and a walking tour in Croatia.  Not, strictly speaking, a women’s only, but travelling solo often lends itself to solo female travellers.
  • Riviera River Cruises: (Marilyn Conroy) Solo River cruises , no single supplement. Presentation focuses on the Danube River.  Riviera, presently booking in $US, offers an experience for those who need – or prefer – to river cruise by themselves.

How about getting on our side to get back our flights that AC cancelled in March 2020 then We may convince our friends and family to join

Ronald Clements

Hello Ron: I believe I responded asking for a further response from you. I don’t think I got that… Danny AlmonTravel

Please work toward having more direct flights so we do not have to go to TO or Montreal

Thank you for your email. We travel agents in the Maritimes are all for getting more direct flights. The problem from the tour operators’ point of view – from past experience – is that demand does not come close to filling planes. If the airline cannot have close-to-full planes on each departure, they lose money.

Having said that, we are always telling them that we need more flights. Let’s see if what we have just experienced with Covid will encourage them to open the routes up – but then it’s up to us to ensure we fill them. Danny

Will a recording be available for the Intrepid Morocco presentation scheduled for nest Tuesday?

Thanks, Judy

HI Judy: The presentation is still scheduled for tomorrow night unless there are any problems on the part of the presenter. A link will be available to the recording as soon as she sends it to me (usually a day or 2.)

I will need your email address though, to [email protected] regards,

But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverages are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

What is travel insurance?

CFAR explained.

Is travel insurance worth getting?

10 credit cards that provide travel insurance.

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Caa club group of companies signs on as new carp recommended insurance provider.

Better Coverage, Better Price, Better Service

TORONTO, Feb. 22, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CARP , Canada’s largest advocacy association for Canadians As We Age, announces that CAA will carry the  CARP Recommended  Seal as its New Exclusive Auto, Home, Life, Travel and Pet Insurance provider starting April 1, 2023 in Ontario, and May 1, 2023 across the country.

The not-for-profit CARP, and the not-for-profit CAA, (also ranked as Canada’s most trusted brand across all age categories), are two organizations mutually aligned in their commitment to putting members first. Both offer unique value-added benefits, and both advocate for the overall safety and well-being of their coast-to-coast membership base.

“Everyone knows that you should visit and revisit your doctor, dentist, and ophthalmologist on a regular basis; and don't forget that annual colonoscopy. But no one ever checks their insurance. We diligently and often automatically make our monthly payments without asking if there’s a more comprehensive, more competitive non ageist option somewhere else. I’m proud to say we’ve discovered that there is,” said CARP President and ZoomerMedia CEO and Founder Moses Znaimer .

“Innovation is not a term people often associate with insurance, but the industry has evolved and now CARP is moving along with it,” continued Moses. “All these years, I thought we were offering our members a good deal. But compared to what was offered before, CAA provides better coverage for a better price with better customer support, including for older Canadians who may think it’s too late, too risky, and too expensive to switch. I heartily endorse CAA carrying our respected CARP Recommended Seal . Plainly put, with CAA, CARP members will be better off.”

“CAA Club Group has admired CARP’s powerful advocacy and loyal membership for many years; and, on a personal level, Moses has been a television hero of mine for many more! So, of course we are excited to work directly with Moses and CARP to create a compelling insurance program for their members. We already have a suite of insurance products perfectly suited for CARP Members, like CAA My Pace™, that rewards low-mileage drivers with the freedom to pay only for the actual distance they travel. Moses has the best insights into CARP’s demographic and I look forward to collaborating with him on future innovations,” said Jay Woo, President and CEO, CAA Club Group of Companies.

In conjunction with the partnership, CARP and CAA will be creating tailored educational content for the 350,000+ CARP members which will be produced by CARP affiliate ZoomerMedia’s TV, radio, print, and digital properties including VisionTV, The New Classical FM, Zoomer Radio, and Zoomer Magazine.

On April 1, CARP will introduce a one-stop insurance hub for CARP Recommended Home, Auto, Travel and Life Insurance quotes. To kick-off the new partnership, we will be offering valuable incentives for getting a quote such as a $50 CAA rewards card redeemable for dining and shopping; or a $200 CAA Travel Voucher, or Free CARP Memberships and Zoomer Magazine subscriptions combined.

About CAA Club Group of Companies For 120 years, CAA has been helping Canadians stay mobile, safe and protected. The CAA Club Group of Companies (CCG) is comprised of two automobile clubs, CAA South Central Ontario and CAA Manitoba, providing roadside assistance, travel, insurance, advocacy, and member savings for over 2.5 million members. It also includes the CAA Insurance Company, a national property and casualty insurance company; Echelon Insurance, a national specialty insurer; CCG Advisory Services, offering life and living insurance solutions; and the Orion Travel Insurance Company. CCG is part of the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), a federation of eight independent Clubs across Canada serving over six million members.

About CARP CARP (also known as the Canadian Association of Retired Persons) is a national, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that advocates for improved health care, financial security, and freedom from ageism for Canadians As We Age. With over 350,000 members and 28 chapters across Canada, CARP plays an active role at all levels of government in the creation of policy and legislation that impacts the 45plus. CARP enlists members’ voices to increase its clout as an effective advocate. CARP also has a unique affiliation with ZoomerMedia Limited (TSXV:ZUM), founded by Moses Znaimer in 2008, the leader in speaking to and for the “Zoomer” demographic in Canada. ZoomerMedia’s powerful suite of media channels support CARP's advocacy. Most CARP members subscribe to ZOOMER Magazine, watch ZoomerTelevision/VisionTV, and listen to Zoomer Radio (AM740/96.7FM/ZoomerRadio.ca). For more information and how to join, visit  carp.ca

What is annual travel insurance?

Coverage options in annual travel insurance plans, how much does annual travel insurance cost, purchasing annual travel insurance, annual travel insurance frequently asked questions, how annual travel insurance works.

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Annual travel insurance offers multi-trip coverage for travelers taking several trips over a year.
  • Annual travel insurance can be cheaper and more convenient but is less flexible than single trip insurance.
  • A 30-year-old US resident can expect to pay between $125 to $700 for annual travel insurance.

The more you travel, the higher your chances are that something goes wrong. Fortunately, coverage is available that can soften the financial blow if you get sick, lose your luggage, or experience some other hiccup while abroad.

While single trip travel insurance can cover one-off trips, frequently travelers may want annual travel insurance, which covers all your trips throughout a year. Read on to learn what annual travel insurance covers, how much you can expect to pay, and when you should buy.

Annual travel insurance, also called multi-trip insurance, is a type of insurance policy that protects you from potential losses on all trips in a 12-month period.

An annual travel insurance plans is more expensive than one single trip policy, but annual travel insurance becomes increasingly cost-effective as you take more trips. Buying annual travel insurance is also more convenient than shopping for travel insurance every time you take a trip. As such, these policies are particularly good for people who travel for work.

While annual travel insurance offers more convenience over single trip policies, you forfeit some flexibility offered in single trip travel insurance. For one, annual travel insurance limits the maximum number of days it will cover in one trip . This threshold varies from provider to provider, but generally it's up to a maximum of 90 days.

"During the coverage period, a traveler can move between countries and remain covered on the same insurance policy," says Rajeev Shrivastava , chief executive officer at VisitorsCoverage , a travel insurance marketplace. "With 30-day coverage, the plan is no longer valid on day 31. The traveler needs to return to their home country, resetting the 30 days and allowing them to resume travel."

Additionally, some annual travel insurance policies only cover trips a certain distance (say, 100 miles) from your residence or farther. Make sure to note these limitations before purchasing your policy — particularly if most of your travel is domestic.

Annual travel insurance coverage varies by plan and provider, but it is generally less comprehensive than a single trip policy.

Annual policies typically include coverage for emergency medical care, medical evacuations, trip delays, and lost or stolen baggage. Most basic plans do not cover trip cancellations (though a few more comprehensive ones do). If you're looking for cancellation reimbursement, you may want to purchase a single-trip plan with cancel for any reason coverage.

Here are just a few things a basic annual travel insurance plan might include:

  • Trip cancellation for covered reasons
  • Trip interruption
  • Trip delays
  • Missed connections
  • Lost or stolen baggage
  • Baggage delay
  • Rental car damage or theft
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Repatriation of mortal remains

Limitations and exclusions to annual travel insurance

As we mentioned earlier, annual travel insurance plans are less flexible compared to single trip plans. While this affects how many days are covered in one trip, it'll also limit what you can cover. For one, coverage limits are usually lower throughout the policy.

Most notably, annual travel insurance plans do not offer cancel for any reason coverage . To receive reimbursement for a canceled trip, you must have canceled for a covered reason, such as illness or a disaster at your travel destination.

Depending on your provider, you may be able to add coverage for adventure sports injuries or purchase an adventure sports-specific policy, as these are not covered by standard travel insurance.

"Annual travel insurance doesn't cover losses that arise from expected or reasonably foreseeable events," says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Travel Insurance . "If your trips involve high-risk adventure — like skydiving, caving, mountain climbing, or participating in any athletic competition — your annual policy may not cover medical care if you sustain injuries."

Your age, the number of trips you plan to take, where you live, and other factors will figure into the cost of your coverage. For a 30-year-old US resident taking an estimated eight trips per year, all for fewer than 30 days each, annual travel insurance plans cost roughly between $125 and $700 , according to an analysis of plans on travel insurance comparison platform SquareMouth.

For example, under Seven Corner's travel insurance , one of the companies listed in our guide on the best international travel insurance companies for its long-term coverage, a 30-year-old US resident taking trips to eight destinations (including the US) would pay $375.50 for the annual plan with the lowest annual cancellation limit ($2,500) and $648 for the highest ($10,000).

"The per-trip length of coverage is usually a determining factor of the cost," Shrivastava says. "The longer the trip duration, the more expensive the policy can be."

Since annual travel insurance plans cover you for a full year, consider purchasing your policy right before your first trip. Strategic purchase dates could help you stretch your coverage period to cover more travels, but don't ignore the drawbacks of this approach.

First, you could forget. A lot goes into preparing for a trip, so leaving your travel insurance until the last minute could cause it to fall through the cracks. If you do opt to wait, make sure you set an alarm or calendar reminder.

Additionally, if you wait too long, your policy may not cover any pre-existing medical conditions. Some travel insurance companies will only cover pre-existing conditions if you buy your policy within 14 days of making your first trip payment.

As Durazo puts it, "Whether you're choosing an individual or annual policy, the best time to purchase insurance is always at the same time as you book your travel."

Assess your travel needs

Annual travel insurance isn't right for everyone, but if you travel often, it might be a good fit. Before you take out your policy, have an idea of what travels you'll take in the next year, and use the following chart to help guide your decision.

"These plans are ideal for frequent travelers such as business travelers, digital nomads, or other avid travelers," Shrivastava says. "They aren't a fit for travelers who are only taking one or two trips per year or someone looking for a more comprehensive range of benefits."

Yes, many policies include an option to add family members when you buy your policy, though. However, terms will vary depending on the insurance provider.

Some insurers allow you to automatically renew your annual travel insurance when it expires, though you can also wait until you're going on another trip to re-purchase. You can cancel annual travel insurance at any time, but you will only receive a refund if you cancel within your policy's money-back guarantee period and your trip hasn't started yet.

Pre-existing conditions can be covered under an annual travel insurance plan as long as you meet certain requirements. Policies often require that you buy travel insurance within a certain number of days from when you placed a deposit on your trip, usually two to three weeks. Additionally, many travel insurance providers require that your condition is stable.

How to Pick the Right Travel Insurance

Here’s how to cut through the jargon and get the plan that’s right for you.

paperwork for travel insurance next to a starfish a straw hat and sunglasses

Lynn Asinof and Adam Pitluk,

The idea of buying travel insurance is simple enough: Once you’ve shelled out thousands of dollars for your special trip, you don’t want to lose money if you have to cancel. Or you don’t want to pay thousands more if you have a mid-trip  medical emergency .

Although   purchasing travel insurance can be complicated, experts say it’s helpful when you do it right. If you look at these policies, you’ll understand why Robert Hunter, insurance director emeritus for the Consumer Federation of America, says virtually no one reads them. There are enough riders, waivers, exceptions, limitations and disqualifying events to baffle even the most expert interpreter of foreign-language train schedules. “The terminology is confusing,” Hunter says. “People can’t understand what the policies mean.”

How do you figure out whether you need travel insurance, what coverage you need and what to look out for when you buy it? This Q&A guide will help you choose coverage — should you decide to buy any at all.

Do I need travel insurance?

For starters, if you’re traveling abroad, ask your health insurer if it covers international medical bills. If not, you want to buy a travel policy that includes travel health coverage. (With rare exceptions, traditional  Medicare  doesn’t cover health problems when you’re traveling outside the U.S., but some Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans do.) Matt Kepnes, of nomadicmatt.com, a travel website, recommends $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $300,000 in coverage for a medical evacuation.

“I never travel abroad without travel insurance,” he says. “I’ve had bags lost and stolen, my camera broke, my eardrum popped while diving, and I’ve even been mugged and stabbed. While you’re likely going to be fine 99 percent of the time, the risk just isn’t worth it. Moreover, emergency evacuations can cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The past is not prologue, and it’s important to have coverage in case anything happens.”

Is travel insurance worth it?

Seasoned travelers know that regardless of how well you plan, and even if you packed for any type of weather, life happens.

Meghan Walch, director of product for InsureMyTrip.com, says she hopes you never have to use travel insurance, but without it, you might be out a lot of money.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

“Travel insurance is not one-size-fits-all and may not be necessary or ‘worth it’ for every trip,” Walch says. She suggests considering your trip and your travel partners to determine whether you need to buy insurance.

Essentially, if you’re worried about the unforeseen “ifs,” it’s better to err on the side of caution.

What if I break my leg two days before my trip?

A last-minute unforeseen health emergency that prevents you from traveling should be covered by trip cancellation insurance. To figure out how much coverage you should purchase, add up all your nonrefundable expenses for such things as airline tickets, cruise cost, tours and prepaid excursions. You’ll need to buy coverage for 100 percent of these costs to be eligible for certain benefits such as the preexisting condition waiver.

To collect, you’ll need a note from your doctor certifying that you are unable to travel and including the details of your diagnosis or injury.

Are there any special considerations for older travelers?

Although this is not always the case, older travelers are more likely to have a  preexisting medical condition . “Coverage for preexisting medical conditions can typically be included in a travel insurance policy at no additional premium, as long as the policy is purchased shortly after booking the trip (typically 14 to 21 days post-booking),” says Megan Moncrief, president of squaremouth.com, an online travel-insurance comparison site. “If an older traveler is concerned about an existing condition, they should purchase the policy as soon as possible upon booking a trip.”

If COVID-19  taught travelers anything, it’s that flights or entire trips can be canceled without notice. Although the airlines reimbursed travelers during COVID, there’s no guarantee they’ll do so today. Moncrief says to take that into consideration when considering travel insurance. “While the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the benefits — and in some cases, requirements — to travel with insurance, several of the   benefits included within most plans are perhaps even more relevant today.”

If my widowed mother has a medical emergency while I’m traveling, am I covered if I drop everything and head home?

An event that causes your trip to be cut short falls under trip interruption coverage. One common scenario Moncrief cites: the serious illness or unexpected death of a close relative such as a mother, brother or child. To make a claim in this situation, you’ll need a doctor’s note to get reimbursed. And your relative has to have been medically fit at the time you bought the insurance (which, again, you must buy on a timely basis).

I’d like to go on a Caribbean cruise this fall. What if it’s canceled because of a hurricane? Or what if my flight to Miami is delayed and I miss the boat?

A cruise called off as a hurricane barrels toward Florida would indeed be covered by trip cancellation insurance, assuming you bought it before the hurricane was forecast. Some policies provide “cruise only” missed connection coverage that will pay for flying you to the next destination port if you miss the boat because of flight delays.

Check a policy’s wording carefully: You might not be covered for a delayed flight if your plane’s scheduled arrival falls too close to your ship’s departure. If a cruise is rerouted, not canceled, to avoid a storm, you probably won’t get any reimbursement. Some plans may let you cancel if your destination is subject to a hurricane warning close to your departure date.

What if I’m worried about all of the above, plus pickpockets?

Comprehensive travel insurance policies are designed to cover a wide range of risks, from trip cancellation and interruption to travel delay, baggage protection, medical issues, emergency evacuation and 24-hour assistance. Some policies will even reimburse you a set amount toward the cost of a new passport. A standard comprehensive policy can add 4 to 10 percent to the cost of your trip.

More Buying Tips

Comparison shop …  Cruise lines, group trip operators and airlines all offer add-on trip insurance when you buy your tickets. But it typically isn’t a good deal, says Robert Hunter, who suggests contacting insurers directly for details on prices and coverage.

… but don’t dawdle.  There are numerous insurance benefits that are available only if you buy coverage shortly after you make your first trip payment — including any nonrefundable deposits. As you make additional nonrefundable payments, you can usually increase the amount of your coverage.

Know your needs …  Insurable trip cost is not the same as total trip cost. Prepaid, nonrefundable costs are typically covered, as are expenses that you will be billed for if you cancel your trip. Tickets purchased with frequent-flier miles aren’t covered, though taxes and related fees might be.

… but don’t overbuy.  Are you taking a cheap flight to Chile and staying with friends? Instead of paying for a comprehensive policy that includes cancellation and interruption coverage, you can probably pay less for a policy that covers medical issues only. For lost luggage, you may have sufficient coverage on your homeowners policy or the credit card you use to book your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can purchase some travel insurance plans (but not all) if you're older than 80 years old. However, your premiums may be higher and you'll typically qualify for lower coverage limits overall. Make sure you compare the best travel insurance plans for seniors to find the right fit for your needs.

Since seniors and retirees are more likely to face a medical emergency during a trip, most travel insurance plans for seniors include coverage for emergency medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation. Coverages vary among plans, as do limits, so make sure to compare options before you book a trip overseas.
