To use Cruise Control, turn it on first by pressing the button on the end of the control stalk behind the lower right side of the steering wheel. The green cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display to show the system is ready.

Then accelerate to the speed you want, and press the stalk down to set it. The SET indicator will appear underneath the CRUISE CONTROL icon to let you know you can take your foot off the accelerator.

If you need to increase your speed, lift and hold the stalk up until you reach the speed you want, and then release it.

To reduce the set speed, push the stalk down and hold it to slow down to your target speed, and then release it.

To temporarily suspend cruise control, pull the stalk towards you, or tap the brakes.

To resume the set speed, push the lever up briefly.

Presume you're in Italy rather than the UK, which you have stated in your profile - especially in light of the fact the Corolla Cross isn't available in the UK currently !!

Please confirm.

I tested a Corolla Cross a week or so ago. The button that activates the adaptive cruise also activates the ordinary cruise, and the speed limiter.

Perhaps you have scrolled past the AC option???

Profile changed to 'Other/NonUK'.

Actually i had a rav4 before and rented a corolla so i am quite used to it . it simply does not start and does not say why. i guess i have to go back to the dealer

Have you pressed the button at 3 o'clock, then at 6 o'clock?  Or if it has controls with a toggle switch like my Yaris Cross the technique is quite different.

On the left of the switch cluster are 3 buttons.  Top sets the radar spacing, bottom activates speed limiter.  Middle engages cruise control.

In the centre is a toggle switch. Down sets the speed.  Up increases the speed.  You must press down before you press up.

A long push Up increases speed in 5 per hr steps up to the speed limit.  Long push down drops in 5 /hr increments.  Short push is increments of 1.

Pressing the large button at 3 o'clock cancels the ACC.  Pushing centre button up resumes the CC.

Now if you press the CC select button on the left it disengages CC and you need to press it again to re engage.

Confused?

Indeed ask your dealer.

Thanks Roy, I tried everything because, as I said , I owned before a Rav4 and then rented a Corolla until they delivered this new corolla cross . I took it  back to the car dealer and they fixed it. I guess it was a bug. Thank you all for helping

Just checking but on mine I press the CC button once for Adaptive CC (radar sensitive)... but for normal CC you had to press and hold the CC button for one second until it tells you it is in normal mode.

Problems with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control?

Discussion in ' Gen 4 Prius Care, Maintenance and Troubleshooting ' started by Hydrocket , Feb 18, 2021 .

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is "unavailable". I thought it might be due to recent cold snap, but it's been warmer and still not working. Basically, I turn on cruise, it says "Radar Ready" and then when I actually push to set afford control it says "Cruise Control Not Available" with a yellow exclamation mark. No other errors or warnings of any kind. So I washed the car and inspected the emblem hoping it was dirty (despite not getting the clean sensor message) No visible damage. No warning on the dash about radar, just that cruise is not available. Pictures included. Pre Collision works! Set it as loosely as possible, then approached a couple of cars in the turning lane. Sure enough the "BRAKE" warning flashes on the dash. And I think that system uses the radar? This sure is perplexing. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); It almost feels like a condition in the car is preventing the radar cruise from working. For example, I used to get the EXACT same message in my Lexus LS when I tried to engage DRCC if the traction control switch was in "Snow" setting. Same message, same yellow exclamation mark. Is there a switch or setting in the car that could cause this as is did in my Lexus? Anyone else experience this?

There's a list of possibilities in the manual. I put an arrow on one that seems likely if you turned off VSC or traction control and forgot about it.

Just adding to the guesses here. Since there isn't a message specifically directing you to "contact the dealer" like in the case of an ECU failure, maybe it's just a regular cruise control issue such as a stuck cancel switch on the brake pedal or dissimilar tire sizes causing an ABS fault. Not even sure if my 2021 manual is representative of 2017 issues. I'll see myself out...

Something else you might try before the dealer $$ visit. Try a little careful disassembly down to the radar unit and check the connections. Remove and replace the plug(s) several times. I myself have not investigated this route, and have no idea where the connectors are on the unit. And if there is exposed wiring harness visible from that vantage point, check that also for any signs of "nibbling". Rodents have an affinity for the insulation and other environmentally friendly materials the vehicle is composed of.
It's been bitterly cold and the original Cruise Control Not Available warning is displaying again! I'm half wondering if extreme cold prevents it from working properly? Been -25 for several days here.

Does regular cruise still work? Press and hold the cruise on/off button and it'll go to regular non dynamic cruise. If that works then your problem is probably related to the radar in the emblem. If that doesn't work then your problem is something else.

How long have you owned the car? Has it ever worked in the cold for you? Imho, sounds like a bad/misaligned radar unit, or bent radar support. Imho, you need a "real" scan tool to see the error. Otherwise, you're guessing. Kinda like people with "ABS error - how to fix" questions. Without a scan tool, replace every single component. But, with the radar, ADAS systems, that doesn't work, since radar, ultrasonic, and camera system all require proper alignment. Good Luck!

Doug McC said: ↑ According to my 2022 Owners Manual that is exactly what is happening. Says it very clearly that in extreme cold conditions it will not work (neither will the Auto Mode of the windshield wipers). At -25 f you should consider yourself lucky that the hybrid system even started (again, according to the Owners Manual). Click to expand...

Toyota Highlander Cruise Control Not Working: How to Fix

The cruise control system is a big plus in any vehicle and if it fails, you’d have to put in some extra work to keep your vehicle moving at a constant speed. However, a Toyota Highlander cruise control failure goes beyond a driving problem and could signify something even more serious.

There are a few reasons why your cruise control system would stop working and there are a handful of fixes that can fix the problem. This article covers some of the common possible causes and the right fixes that should be applied.

toyota highlander cruise control not working

But before we dive right into the causes and fixes, we’d take a look at how the cruise control system works.

How the Cruise Control System Works

Toyota highlander cruise control not working: causes, replace the faulty brake pedal switch, replace the speed sensor, check for a blown fuse, replace or fix the vacuum actuator, final thoughts.

The cruise control system setup would depend on the vehicle’s make. In modern vehicles, it makes use of a fully electronic setup which is controlled by the vehicle’s ECU (electronic control unit).

In older vehicles, it could be controlled by a vacuum actuator that is physically connected to a chain or cable. The adjustment of the cable will increase or decrease the throttle position based on the actions of the actuator. This system is called electromechanical cruise control.

Your mechanic will tell you which kind of system your cruise control is based on.

  • Faulty Brake Pedal Switch
  • Damaged Speed Sensor
  • Damaged Mechanical Components

The cruise control system is wired to the brake pedal switch and is meant to disengage whenever the brake pedal is pressed. If the brake pedal switch stays engaged or fails, the cruise control system will remain off.

This fix would require you to replace the brake pedal switch, however, it could require more than that. You may also have to check the wiring connected to the switch for signs of damage.

To get this fixed, you should have your mechanic examine the switch for any signs of damage. The mechanic should also inspect the wires connected to the switch for any damage and change them if necessary. The switch should also be replaced and then the mechanic would confirm it the problem has been solved and the cruise control system working properly.

The speed sensor is also connected to the cruise control system. It if fails, the cruise control system may stop working along with the speedometer and you may notice that your engine would have more difficulty when idling.

Your mechanic would have to examine the speed sensor and its surrounding wires for any signs of damage. If so, the mechanic will have to replace the sensor. If there are any problems with the wires connected to the sensor to the speedometer and the cruise control switches, they would have to be replaced too. This should fix the problem and get the cruise control system working as normal.

The cruise control system is protected by a fuse which prevents it from being damaged due to over-current or a short circuit. If the corresponding fuse for the cruise control system has blown, then the system would stop working.

This fix wouldn’t require a mechanic but if you’re not used to car repairs, then you should leave it to the professionals. All that would be required is to check for the corresponding fuse for the cruise control to see if it has blown. It should be easy to tell if the fuse has blown or failed. If it has, then it should be replaced. When replacing a blown fuse with a new one, only go for those rated for the correct amperage.

If this fix proves too hard for you to perform, then you should drive your car to your mechanic and explain this. Your mechanic should be able to get things done quickly and you won’t have to spend too much on it.

If you’re driving an older model, then your cruise control system probably makes use of a vacuum actuator. This system features a vacuum actuator and a cable connected to the vehicle’s throttle. Together they work to maintain the speed of the vehicle and keep you at a certain distance behind the vehicle in front of you.

If the vacuum actuator fails or there is damage to the hoses, then the cruise control system would stop working. Also, there may be problems with the cable connecting the actuator to the throttle. The cable could be broken.

The vacuum actuator, the hoses, and the cable would have to be checked to ensure they’re in perfect working condition if they’re okay, then the actuator may have to be replaced.

Whenever your mechanic performs a fix and confirms that the cruise control system is in order, you should take it for a test drive to confirm it yourself. With that done, the mechanic will use their code reader to clear any trouble codes that may have been produced when the cruise control system failed.

While you could perform some of these fixes on your own, it is best to get a mechanic on the job. A cruise control failure could be a signal that your car is about to develop a fault in its other components. Your mechanic may also inspect other systems like the brake lights and speedometer to check for faults and make the necessary repairs.

While the cruise control system makes driving on the highway more convenient, it is important to keep an eye on the cruise control system as a sudden failure could be dangerous. If you notice that the cruise control system is failing or stopped working altogether, get a mechanic to check it out immediately.

5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: March 15, 2023

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

RELATED: 5 Symptoms of a Broken Clock Spring, Location & Replacement Cost

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Cruise Control Malfunction

  • Add to quote

I have a 2018 RAV4 LE. When I try to enable the cruise control, I get the "Cruise Control Malfunction" message. It's telling me to visit a dealer. Before I take it to a dealer, which I will, I'm just wondering what the problem might be and if anyone has encountered a similar problem. I found some information that it might have something to do with fuses, but I'm not sure if there even is a fuse for the cruise control system. I looked in the fuse box and couldn't find any that may control the system. Thanks

I'm not so sure about the cruise buttons - it detects that I'm requesting to turn on the cruise control functionality, hence the "Cruise Control malfunction" message. Would there be a problem with the sensors? Is there a way to test the sensors myself? I think there's a sensor behind the Toyota logo in front of the vehicle and right behind the rear mirror. i also checked the VIN with the link you provided and nothing showed up.

Are you out of warranty?

Unfortunately yea, just out of it. I'm around 36.6k Would it still be covered under powertrain warranty?

I would ask. I would say that the issue probably occurred while it was still in warranty and you only just noticed it.

2019 Avalon Touring. Yesterday the radar cruise control shut down while driving 65 MPH. Checked it today and there's a message, "radar cruise control unavailable". Any suggestions?

Make sure nothing blocking the emblem on the front grill

I cleaned the emblem and camera then drove the car. No luck, but an hour later I was in the car again and it worked fine??

How's the weather where you are? Driving in fog, mist, or rain? That could have an effect on it.

The weather was clear. Please see my other post.

Also make sure the windshield is clean, particularly right behind the rear view mirror. There's another camera/sensor there.

Pretty sure the sensor for radar distance is behind the emblem in the grill

2018 Prius Prime. I've been getting the "radar cruise control not available" for a week. Cleaned all sensor and camera views, no luck. Happens immediately when I switch it on; brief flash of normal screen then the error message. Rain, snow, clouds, sunshine - makes no difference. Having exhausted everything I could find online or in the manual, I left it with the dealer this morning; after 5 hours and two phone calls, got a return call saying testing gave no errors, no codes, no ideas. They are "recalibrating" and I won't have it for the weekend. Excuse is they have only one hybrid-licensed mechanic on today, but it sounds like they have no idea what's wrong. I called Toyota's toll-free line, asking if components in this system are covered under warranty up to 100,000 km, as I can't find any mention of either inclusion or exclusion in the manual or warranty supplement. Currently on hold with Toyota, 16 minutes so far. Anybody know the answer?

toyota cruise control not available

@19AvHyXL sorry for an old post revival but do you recall what the braking issue was that caused your adaptive features not to work? My 19 XSE manual hatchback is in for service on cruise randomly being in-op. No messages on screen, but my auto e-brake also stopped automatically disengaging when I put it in gear and start releasing the clutch. It would previously auto disengage just like the automatics when you put it in drive. They want to put a new front recognition camera in because they can't figure it out but I'm not convinced it's the camera. They said there are two error messages that confused them so they asked me if it's been in a collision or had the front glass replaced. It has not. Appreciate any insight

GR86 Active Safety Suite

On automatic transmission models, GR86 comes standard with a number of intelligent safety features, including Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Sway Warning and Automatic High Beams. GR86 models equipped with automatic transmission also come with Rear Parking Sonar with Reverse Automatic Braking.

Blind Spot Detection and Rear Parking Sonar With Reverse Automatic Braking

The available Blind Spot Detection (BSD) warns you when a vehicle in the next lane enters GR86’s blind spot. And when you’re in reverse, Rear Parking Sonar with Reverse Automatic Braking uses sensors on the rear bumper to detect obstructions behind the vehicle. If detected, the system can alert the driver with warning sounds and automatically apply the brakes to avoid a collision or reduce collision damage.

All-LED Lighting with Available Adaptive Front-Lighting System

Eye-catching headlights on GR86 feature distinctive LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) to improve visibility and style, as well as an available Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS). At night, Adaptive Front-Lighting headlights turn alongside the front wheels, helping you see better around the next corner.

Available Driver Assist Package

GR Supra’s available Driver Assist and Safety and Technology Packages bring added peace of mind to every drive. The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system is designed to help alert you to vehicles that may be in the Supra’s blind spot, letting you know when it’s safe to change lanes. When you’re slowly backing out of a driveway or parking spot, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) provides audible and visual indicators to help warn you of approaching vehicles. And Cruise Control on Manual Transmission models helps keep your GR Supra going at your desired speed, while Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) on Automatic Transmission models helps with highway driving by keeping GR Supra at a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of it, automatically accelerating and braking as needed.

Available Front and Rear Parking Sensors

Tech that helps detect what you might not. When you’re parking, sensors on the front and rear of GR Supra scan for walls, curbs and other objects that might be hidden from your view. Should the system anticipate a collision, it is designed to emit an audible alert, reduce engine output, and automatically apply the brakes. Simulation shown.

Infants and Toddlers: Rear-Facing

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child should ride in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the seat’s height or weight limit. Infant-only car seats should always face the rear of the vehicle. Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats, which can face either the rear or the front, typically have height and weight limits for the rear-facing position that are higher than the limits on infant seats.

Toddlers and Preschoolers: Forward-Facing

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, once your child has reached the maximum height or weight limit allowed in the rear-facing position, then he or she can ride in a forward-facing car seat with a five-point harness. Keep your child in this car seat until they reach the maximum height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer in the forward-facing position.

School-Age Children: Booster Seat

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, once your child has reached the maximum height or weight allowed in the forward-facing car seat with harness, transition to a booster seat. Your child should still ride in the rear seat at all times.

Explore Available Features on Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0

Toyota Safety Sense™ 3.0 is standard on select new vehicles.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD) is designed to help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist and provide an audio/visual forward-collision warning under certain circumstances. If you don’t react, the system is designed to provide automatic emergency braking.

Intended for highway use, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is an adaptive cruise control system that is designed to be set at speeds above 20 mph and uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

When white/yellow lane markings or certain road-edge boundary lines are detected at speeds above 30 mph, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) is designed to issue an audio/visual lane departure warning if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system is also designed to provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Lane Tracing Assist

When available Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) is enabled and lane markers are detected, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane. While LTA is activated, the available Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is designed to monitor the driver's inputs, such as steering operation. If the EDSS determines the driver is not attentive and the driver does not respond to prompts to resume control of the vehicle, it can bring the vehicle to a stop under certain conditions.

Road Sign Assist

Using an intelligent camera, Road Sign Assist (RSA) is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

Proactive Driving Assist

*not available on all TSS 3.0 vehicles. When system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle’s camera and radar, Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) provides gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian or bicyclist.

Automatic High Beams (AHB) are designed to help you see more clearly at night at speeds above 21 mph. The AHB system is designed to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and taillights of preceding vehicles, then automatically toggle between high and low beams accordingly.
