As usual, fast service and good food. Chick-fil-A just doesn't disappoint!

The busiest service area on the New Jersey Turnpike is back in business in time for the Fourth of July weekend with the first Chick-fil-A restaurant on the state’s toll roads.

The new Thomas Edison Service area on the Turnpike south in Woodbridge officially opened Tuesday, the second new service area opened this year.

While the Monmouth Service Area got the first Shake Shack on state toll roads , the Edison rest stop is the first to have a Chick-fil-A, the same franchise that 500 people lined up to get in when one opened in Morris Plains earlier this month .

While people weren’t lined up on the shoulder of the highway, there was a good sized crowd on Wednesday, the second day it was open.

“I thought the balloons were for me,” said Pam Zach of Palm Coast, Florida, referring to archways of balloons over the entrances remaining from Monday’s grand opening. “It’s lovely.”

She should know. Zach and her husband Mike are homeward bound on their way back from Maine and have sampled a few highway rest areas. The includes a service area in Maine with a tank of live lobsters that travelers could buy and have shipped home.

“It was similar to this,” she said, as she and her husband Mike enjoyed meals from Chick-fil-A. While they were eating food from the popular franchise restaurant, it wasn’t the main attraction.

“I like the bridge from the express lanes,” Mike Zach said.

“It was a good turn-off,” Pam Zach added.

The service area architecture is similar to the Grover Cleveland service area building, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, torn down, rebuilt and opened in 2015. Turnpike Authority officials said that upscale building and layout could be the model for other rebuilds.

The Edison Service area incorporates some of the same stone, sloping roof line and high ceilings of Grover Cleveland and added outdoor tables under a roof for dining. Some of the walls pay tribute to Edison the inventor, and it includes light bulb motifs on glass around the entrance.

“It’s definitely an improvement,” said Jim Rhodes of Malvern, Pennsylvania, who remembered the old building. “There are certainly more people. It was done pretty quickly.”

He hadn’t dined on Chick-fil-A, yet.

Missing from the hungry crowd was any of the controversy Chick-fil-A has gotten for statements made in 2012 by the company’s CEO in opposition to same-sex marriage. The company is family-owned and privately-held. Traditionally the restaurant is closed on Sundays and that also applies to the Turnpike location, according to the company website.

Unlike the Monmouth Service area opening, where all the customer attention was on Shake Shack, business was brisk for Chick-fil-A and the adjacent Burger King and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. It was a little slower at Pret A Manger, which is located in a corner of the building.

The Thomas Edison service area is the second to reopen under a $250 million project to rebuild 14 service areas operated by HMSHost, and two fuel station and convenience store locations run by Sunoco. The program started in 2018 and ends in 2024.

Next on the tear down/make over list are the Vince Lombardi and Richard Stockton service areas on the Turnpike and Forked River on the Parkway, which will close after Labor Day. The Lombardi and Forked River buildings are being torn down and replaced. Richard Stockton will be rehabilitated, because it is a newer building.
