‘Something for everyone’ — Rory’s Stories Rory O’Connor hits the road for first Irish tour post pandemic

rory stories tour 2022

Rory O’Connor – better known as his alias Rory’s Stories, is going on tour for the first time since before the pandemic, and has promised that there will be ‘something for everyone.’

Despite touring in October and November of 2019, Rory notes how his audience increased by approximately 30% during COVID-19. Speaking to Extra.ie Rory said: ‘It was weird because I obviously started of with GAA and stuff like that, then went into relationships and all this stuff, and now COVID seemed to open a new avenue – I nearly feel like there’s a new audience there now.’

Rory will put on 16 shows starting in September, and concluding in October. The evenings will be ‘a culmination of everything Rory is known for; from his trademark lockdown stories with 3 kids to his arse hanging out on RTE’s Hell Week .’

Rory added that though, like everyone else, he ‘had to go through the mill’ in terms of lockdowns, he also used it as a means to create content. The comic said: ‘I used it as an opportunity to create content but also give people a much-needed laugh during the pandemic.’

With lockdown, Rory said that the one thing that got him through was having a routine. He said: ‘I’m a big believer, exercise is great for the wellbeing, so I would’ve done a lot of training every morning – just anything to keep the head going.

Rory O'Connor

‘We were living with my parents during the lockdown – myself, my wife, and my two kids, and my wife was actually pregnant as well. So there’s definitely a lot of funny comedy in this show about that. It’s very relevant at the moment, because a lot of people have to move back in with the parents to save, or with no houses.’

He added that he ‘definitely has a few good yarns to tell’ about his family’s experience in living with his parents.

Rory’s participation in RTE’s Ultimate Hell Week, The Professionals in 2021, will also be an element of the shows. Rory commented that the experience was ‘pretty tough, and pretty raw.’ He said: ‘I definitely didn’t hold back.

‘That kind of seemed to impact people in a positive way like, being able to see me struggle, and keep going as best I could and all that.’

Along with the comic relief that Rory is undoubtedly going to share, there will also be a wide range of special guests, with different guests at each of the shows. The comedian turned author revealed that all of his guests are well-known to some degree. He added that his guests are people that he has a genuine interest in chatting with. ‘They’re from every walk of life – from sport, from business, from entertainment – some really cool backgrounds,’ he said.

The Meath native said: ‘I suppose that’s what I wanted to bring to the show. With Rory’s Stories, I suppose it’s 50/50; it’s comedy, then it’s wellbeing and motivational stuff.

‘I wanted to bring that to show. I want you to laugh at my expense, you know, with my own stories, and I want you to take stuff, be positive from the conversation I have with my guest. Then a sing-song – I learned the guitar during the lockdown, so I’ve been banging away on that the last few months.

‘A typical way to finish an Irish night is with a couple of songs and ballads.’

Ultimately, Rory’s sole goal for the shows is for people to have a good night. Speaking to Extra.ie , he said: ‘I just want people to have a good night, genuinely. I want when they think of Rory’s Stories, they think of the craic, but also kind of the motivational stuff as well – I want people to get that experience.’

Rory shared that the one and only thing he could say he wasn’t looking forward to regarding his upcoming tour was the ‘horrible knot five minutes before you go on stage.’ He said: ‘I don’t think anyone enjoys that like, and my opinion is if you don’t feel that, you’re not really worried about it, where you kinda should be.

‘It keeps you on your toes.’

Rory O'Connor

On the other hand, the comedian noted that it’s always worth it. He said: ‘Then to counteract that, it’s worth it for the after feeling. Especially a good show when people enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to that high, because that’s why all entertainers do what they do, it’s because of that adrenaline of a good laugh.’

Rory reiterated that there would be something in the show for everyone, confirming that the shows would be bursting with laughter, honesty and inspiration.

An evening with Rory’s Stories & Special Guests kicks off in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise on September 9. Rory will travel the country with his show, before concluding in Dublin’s Liberty Hall Theatre on October 29. Tickets can be purchased here .

We Sit Down For A Chat With Rory’s Stories Ahead Of His Wexford Show

The eyes of the world are glued to our televisions as we watch on in horror at the unprovoked and unjustifiable Russian invasion of Ukraine…

Russian artillery and airstrikes have reduced areas of Ukrainian cities to rubble . The number of lives irreparably damaged and the number of those who have had to flee their home in search of refuge is growing by the day.

Over the past few weeks, the Irish people have rallied behind the people of Ukraine. Protests outside the Russian Embassy in Dublin, collections across schools all over the country and on The Late Late Show have shown the willingness of the Irish people to stand behind the people of Ukraine.

At 8 pm on Sunday the 20th of March, some of Ireland’s finest comedians will be performing in the National Opera House in Wexford town. Renowned comedians such as Des Bishop, Deirdre O’Kane, Emma Doran, Neil Delamere and Rory’s Stories will be performing on the night.

rory stories tour 2022

We caught up with author, comedian and social media sensation Rory O’Connor or Rory’s Stories as he is more commonly known, ahead of his performance on Sunday night.

Rory’s witty and hilarious sketches often provide insights into the comedic side of Irish life. Rory’s courage and openness surrounding mental health has also been widely praised. He has authored, The Rory’s Stories Guide to the GAA , The Rory’s Stories Guide to Irish Life and Rory’s Story, My unexpected journey to self-belief.

We asked Rory about his feelings on the current situation in Ukraine:

“It’s terrible, the whole world is thinking about them at the minute and everyone is worrying. You just don’t know what’s around the corner – you think you have problems until you hear the likes of that.”

Rory stated that he’s glad to be “able to do anything, any gesture you can at all, to support the cause over there”. He described the gig as being “a great idea to go ahead with” and cheerfully informed us “from what I hear it’s pretty much sold out”.

rory stories tour 2022

The show on Sunday is very eagerly anticipated by many people. Some of Ireland’s most prominent comedians will be gracing the stage in the National Opera House. Rory gave us his thoughts on the gig:

“I’m looking forward to it! I haven’t done a whole lot of stand up since the pandemic, but I’m just finalising dates for a big tour in September and October. I’ve just been very busy; I do a lot of talks in schools and I’m writing another book at the minute as well so I’m busy with that. I’m starting to work on a bit of material for the show and I’m looking forward to getting back out there and having a bit of craic again.”

He told us that he had never worked with any of the other comedians that will be performing on the night, he stated:

“To be honest with you, I haven’t even met any of them before, so I’m looking forward to chatting with them – that’s a good part of this as well; getting to mingle again with different people.”

Although Rory is now among the most recognisable comedians in Ireland, he informed us that he has actually seen very few comedians live:

“I’ve been to see very few comedians live. It just never used to be a thing to go and see them. One of the few comedians I’ve ever seen was Des Bishop, it was about maybe 15 years ago when I saw him. I actually thought he was very good – so he’s one of the two or three comedians I’ve ever seen live, believe it or not. It’ll be cool to meet Des now and tell him he’s the first comedian I ever saw live.”

It all started back in 2013 for Rory O’Connor. Starting with just a little blog, his rise has been meteoric since then:

“It started back with a blog in 2013 and then I set up the Facebook page in 2014. I started to do sketches on the GAA and different characters in GAA clubs – that was kind of a good foundation. At the minute everyone is doing videos on TikTok, but back then there wasn’t really anyone doing much. It was an open market, so I just started banging out as many videos as I could on the GAA.” “I then expanded it to normal Irish culture and relationships, building sites and stuff like that. That’s how it kind of started, with a passion for comedy sketches,” Rory told Wexford Weekly.

He praised the timeless qualities of his older sketches as being “a bit like Father Ted in a way, that kind of comedy will never get old. There are young lads in my daughter’s class now, who were only toddlers when I made the videos first, and now, they all watch them. The comedy doesn’t get old; the dirty GAA corner-back and the cocky corner-forward are still the same in any generation.”

Rory gained significant notoriety over the lockdown period. He released many humorous observations into the intricacies of life in lockdown. Although Rory’s lockdown sketches became a regular feature on everyone’s social media feed , he told us “I didn’t have any intention of doing so many”. For a comedian like Rory, lockdown made him ask “will there even be any live comedy anymore”.

Rory described a very positive reaction to these lockdown sketches:

“With all content, you get a bit of negativity but with these, there seemed to be no negativity, it was all positive. I probably did put myself under a bit of pressure because the way I was looking at it, we were in crisis mode. The doctors and nurses were working harder than they probably ever have before with Covid.” “On paper, my job is to make people laugh, so I just kind of felt that I needed to push out a lot of comedy content. So, I was just horsing out the videos, there was a stage when I was doing three a day which is mad when you think about it now. It was good to have the platform to be able to bring people a bit of laughter during those scary times.”

As well as being an accomplished comedian Rory is also a published author although he notes “it’s something that I certainly wouldn’t have been labelled with when I was in school. I’m currently working on the fourth book at the minute which, again, is hard to believe, but I enjoy writing”. Rory commented on his accessible and direct style of writing when he stated “there’d be no words in my books that you won’t understand, they’re very simple, easy-to-read books. Anyone from 10 years of age to 80 could read the book.”

Rory told us about his new book which will be “looking back on the lockdown”. It will be discussing “the madness that went on”, Rory went on to say that over the lockdown we “definitely lost our minds a little bit without a doubt”. Rory described it as a “good Christmas book for people to look back on the crazy days and have a bit of a laugh.”

Throughout his time in comedy, Rory has not shied away from heavier topics and has always been an open and strong speaker on mental health. We asked Rory what inspired him to share his story:

“Just because I struggled with addiction, mainly gambling. I, for a long time, just felt that I wasn’t good enough. I was one of those that struggled with school and didn’t really get much out of it – it kind of planted a seed in my head that I wasn’t smart or I wasn’t intelligent. In education, back then, if you weren’t good at spelling or maths, you were kind of labelled a bit of a dunce.” “The real inspiration for writing the book was to prove that limitations are only in your mind. I hit a very dark place in 2013, I like to share my story in the hope that it can help others. That’s why I suppose Rory’s Stories’ social media is very much based around mental health and mental health awareness sketches. I think it’s important that I’m honest with people who follow me about my own experience.”

Rory described his performances in Vicar Street as being the highlight of his career in comedy. He described the experience as being “very cool” and took pride in being able to say he performed and headlined in the same venue as the likes of Tommy Tiernan and Christy Moore whose pictures were displayed in the green room.

He described it as “a nice moment, because for anyone in comedy, selling out your own show at Vicar Street is a bucket list thing”. He also spoke on how the “universal language” of GAA has led to him to perform in “every corner of the world”.

Rory hopes that “when this pandemic heads fully into the distance and Mr. Putin has quietened down, we will be able to get going again overseas”.

Rory became one of the standout participants in the celebrity edition of Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week, an RTÉ series in which celebrities were put through their paces on the army ranger training course by the revered Drill Sergeants. Rory’s determination and honesty won him the respect of the viewers. Rory reflected on the experience and told us:

“That was crazy, it’s difficult to describe how hard it was, that was a once in a lifetime experience to push yourself to the limit and find out a lot about yourself. The way I was associated with mental health and the fact that that came out on the show, I was able to show people that I am what I preach – what you see is what you get.” “The real person will always come out of you when you’re broken physically and mentally. It was a great experience and I was lucky to be able to do it with a lot of really solid people. Would I do it again? I’m not too sure to be honest, but I definitely gained a lot from it. Mentally I feel a lot stronger from doing it – it was an absolutely bonkers experience.”

The Drill Sergeants may have seemed terrifying to the audience at home, but Rory informed us:

“They’re grand in real life, that’s just part of their job; the bad language and intimidation to break you and try to put you under pressure so that you’ll quit.” “Getting respect from the likes of Ray Goggins and Ger Reidy means a lot, they don’t give you credit unless you earn it,” he stated.

Rory prides himself on his authenticity.

Speaking to Wexford Weekly, he said:

“Being who I am has gotten me this far with Rory’s Stories. You often hear of people changing, but nah, not me. You either like me or you don’t and that’s fine but I’m not going to change to please people – that’s what I preach. I give talks to companies and schools about being yourself, I can’t preach that and then go off and pretend I’m someone I’m not.”

Looking ahead to Sunday night Rory said it will “be great to at least say we did something for the cause” and said with the wide range of performers “there’ll be some bit of comedy for everyone, you’ll certainly get a laugh at one stage or another”.

You can see Rory performing on Sunday at the National Opera House at Stand Up for Ukraine at 8 pm. Tickets cost €25.00 with all proceeds going to the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

The 2021-2022 PGA Tour season ended with Rory McIlroy winning the FedExCup Playoffs at the East Lake Golf Course. It was the Irishman’s third time winning the title throughout his career. And he had to overcome several hurdles to achieve that feat.

The 2022 Tour Championship field had all the top players on the Tour competing against each other to win the most prestigious title. Moreover, McIlroy had a 6 -shot deficit when he started his week. Yet, he won the event with a 1-shot lead.

“Six behind on the first tee on Thursday, and I was ten behind on the third tee,” McIlroy said after winning the Tour Championship.  “I guess it just shows you anything’s possible,”  he added .

Rory McIlroy compared himself to Joohyung ‘Tom’ Kim

The player also made a connection with Joohyung Tom Kim.

“I thought about Tom Kim at Greensboro and the fact that he won after starting with a quad,”   McIlroy said. Notably, Joohyung ‘Tom’ Kim, a 20-year-old South Korean golfer, won the 2022 Wyndham Championship with an overall 20-under par. Interestingly, he entered the tournament with a quadruple-bogey 8, and McIlroy took his example to explain his victory.

According to the 4-time major champion, he could have had negative thoughts after opening with a 6-shot deficit.  “But I just sort of, I guess, proved that I was in a really good mindset for the week,”  he said.  “And I didn’t let it get to me too much and just stuck my head down and got to work.”

Rory McIlroy was the talk of the season-end tournament since round 1 as he finished it with an impressive 67 . He followed it with 67-63-66 in rounds 2,3, and 4, respectively. South Korean pro-golfer Sungjae Im and the 2022 Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler finished second with just a one-shot deficit with their impressive game as well.

The 2022 Tour Championship winner’s prize money and other benefits

As the season-end tournament, the Tour Championship offers the biggest prize money for the winner. By winning it, the 33-year-old McIlroy earned $18 million as prize money.

He also won the 2022 FedEx Cup trophy. Furthermore, the Irishman also won approximately 38 Official World Golf Ranking points. A five-plus season exemption on the PGA Tour, entries into the Masters, PGA Championship, The Players, and the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions are the perks of winning the Tour Championship.

McIlroy has yet again proved that he is an integral part of the PGA Tour by winning his third FedEx Cup trophy with his impressive game. What was your favorite moment from the 2022 Tour Championship?

Rory McIlroy surges from six shots back to capture FedEx Cup title and $18 million

Rory McIlroy celebrates after winning the Tour Championship and his third FedEx Cup title Sunday.

Rory McIlroy, the strongest voice for the PGA Tour in a tumultuous year, had the final say with his clubs Sunday when he rallied from six shots behind to win the Tour Championship and capture the FedEx Cup for the third time.

McIlroy won $18 million, pushing his PGA Tour earnings to over $26 million for the season. He closed with a four-under 66 to overtake Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who made only one birdie in a 73.

Sungjae Im fell back with a double bogey on the 14th hole and still managed a 66 to tie for second with Scheffler.

McIlroy referred to the final round as a “spectacle,” and not just because of the pro-McIlroy crowd that chanted his name along the closing holes.

“Two of the best players in the world going head-to-head on the best tour,” he said.

Southern California head coach Lincoln Riley talks with quarterback Caleb Williams.

McIlroy needed plenty of help from Scheffler, the No. 1 seed, who began with a two-shot lead and never trailed until the 70th hole. Scheffler, who birdied four of six holes Sunday morning to finish the third round and build a six-shot lead, lost it in the first seven holes.

And then it was a nail-biter to the very end, a stunning afternoon at East Lake that turned on two shots.

McIlroy holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead. After he flew the green by some 20 yards, his pitch was running fast and headed off the front of the green when it hit the pin and settled 7 feet away.

He saved par. Scheffler missed his 10-footer and took bogey, and they matched pars the rest of the way.

Scheffler’s 4-iron on the par-5 18th sailed short and right and into a bunker, and he blasted out over the green. McIlroy went left against the grandstand, took relief and got onto the green for an easy par.

McIlroy won in 2016 in a playoff. He won the FedEx Cup again in 2019, the first year of a staggered start. But this might have been the sweetest of all, coming off a year in which the PGA Tour has been in a nasty battle for players with Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

It was McIlroy who has declared fierce loyalty to the PGA Tour over the last few years, and who joined Tiger Woods in leading a momentous player-only meeting last week that led to significant changes ahead.

“I believe in the game of golf. I believe in this tour, in particular. I believe in the players on this tour,” McIlroy said in the trophy presentation. “It’s the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I’ve played all over.”

OTTAWA, Canada — Paula Reto won the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open for her first LPGA Tour victory, closing with a four-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Nelly Korda and Hye-Jin Choi.

“I’m really, really excited and just proud of myself for being able to stick through the shots and the routines,“ Reto said. “Sometimes, I find that’s really hard to do, especially if you know you have only a few holes left.”

Reto finished at 19-under 265 at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. The 32-year-old South African opened with a course-record 62.

She’s the fourth South African winner on the LPGA Tour, following Sally Little, Lee-Anne Pace and Ashleigh Buhai — the British Women’s Open champion this year.

PGA Champions Tour

GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Steve Stricker won The Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season and ninth overall.

Stricker closed with a 5-under 67 — rebounding from a bogey on the 12th with four straight birdies — for a one-stroke victory over Brett Quigley.

The 55-year-old Stricker also won the major Regions Tradition in May in Alabama.

Quigley finished with a 68.

Jeff Maggert was third at 13 under after a 65.

2022 Tour Championship leaderboard, winner: Rory McIlroy comes from behind to win $18M payout, third FedEx Cup

Mcilroy battled from 10 back to pick up his biggest win since the 2019 players championship.

One could not discuss the future of the PGA Tour this season without Rory McIlroy's name being on their lips. On Sunday at the 2022 Tour Championship, McIlroy reminded he's just as integral in the present. Despite trailing by as many as 10 shots at East Lake Golf Club in the final event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, McIlroy (-21) rallied Sunday to usurp world No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, become the first three-time winner in the history of the FedEx Cup and bank the $18 million first-place prize that comes with the trophy.

Unlike some tournaments in which he digs himself into a hole from which he needs to fight out -- which he surely did by kicking off this event with a triple bogey Thursday -- McIlroy was in the conversation from the start at East Lake by posting 67s in consecutive rounds to open play. However, it was the third-round back nine that he concluded early Sunday that made him a true contender as Rory birdied three of his last six holes to card a 63 and claim his spot alongside Scheffler in the final pairing as he put pressure on the 54-hole leader despite a six-stroke deficit.

"I've been in the final group here three of the last five years," said McIlroy. "I didn't give myself much of a chance teeing off today. Six behind, I thought it was going to be really tough to make up. But [between] my good play and Scottie's not-so-great play, it was a ballgame going into the back nine."

McIlroy's fourth round started with a bogey, but he pulled even with Scheffler after the Texan put three bogeys on his scorecard in the initial six holes. With McIlroy converting five birdies across his first 12 holes, the race was officially on as the two came around the turn. Another bogey on the 14th pushed McIlroy back behind Scheffler, but Rory immediately responded with an astounding 31-foot birdie putt on the 15th that sent the crowd into a frenzy and again sat him in a tie atop the leaderboard.

It was the par-4 16th where McIlroy almost came undone. Sitting in a fairway bunker after his second shot, his third flew over the green by nearly 30 yards. However, Rory's ensuing chip dinged the flag pole, Scheffler missed a 9-foot par putt and McIlroy saved par to take the solo lead and become the first golfer to wrestle the top spot away from Scheffler this week.

Leading by a stroke entering the 18th, McIlroy watched as Scheffler found a bunker only to follow by bouncing his own approach off the grandstand into the rough. When Scheffler airmailed the green with his third shot from the bunker, that left McIlroy the option to conservatively play to the middle of the green and two putt for the FedEx Cup crown.

"I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this today," McIlroy first said after being introduced as champion. "He's had an unbelievable season. I feel sort of bad … but he's a helluva competitor. He's an even better guy. It was an honor and a privilege to battle him today."

Scheffler, a four-time PGA Tour winner this season and the world's top-ranked golfer for nearly the entire year, tied for second alongside Sungjae Im; each took home $5.75 million, splitting the second- and third-place prizes.

McIlroy later mentioned the "battle of Georgia" between the two titans of the game as Scheffler got the better of McIlroy at the 2022 Masters at Augusta National in April. While the bounces went the way of the 26-year-old at the year's first major championship (and for much of the year), on Sunday, the golf gods willed the man from Northern Ireland to victory, making amends for a season that featured four top-10 finishes in the major championships including a heartbreaker (in The Open Championship at St. Andrews) and left sourness in the mouth of McIlroy.

"It means an awful lot [to win the Tour Championship]," said McIlroy. "I believe in the game of golf. I believe in this tour in particular. I believe in the players on this tour. It's the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I've played all over the world.

"This is an incredibly proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud moment for the PGA Tour. They've had some hard times this year, but we're getting through it. That was a spectacle out there today -- two of the best players in the world going head-to-head for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour -- and I hope everyone at home enjoyed that."

Becoming the figurehead of the PGA Tour, leading the charge against the upstart LIV Golf Series and still being able to perform on the highest level on the biggest stage, the taste of victory was that much sweeter for McIlroy in Atlanta.

In a week which began with McIlroy and Tiger Woods spearheading efforts off the golf course to ensure the future of the game, it was McIlroy's performance inside the ropes that again proved what the PGA Tour has cannot be recreated.

Here is the breakdown of the rest of the leaderboard at the 2022 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

T2. Scottie Scheffler, Sungjae Im (-20): The stars were aligned for Scheffler to claim history at East Lake. Starting the week with a two-stroke lead, building it to as many as seven and beginning the final round with a six-stroke edge, Scheffler simply let the FedEx Cup slip through his fingers. After playing his final six holes in 4 under to wrap up his third round Sunday morning, it felt inevitable this week would continue in the same fashion as his spring when he captured his four victories.

With a win, Scheffler would have secured the richest season in the history of the PGA Tour and only the fifth five-win season of the last decade, joining Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. He also would have put a stamp on what has been a breakout campaign. While the $12.25 million difference between the first-place prize and Scheffler's T2 sum may sting, Scheffler will take solace in an astoundingly great season. He is likely to be named your PGA Tour Player of the Year and remains world No. 1, but alas, sometimes even the best fall short when the lights are the brightest.

The adopted son of Atlanta, Im was casually going about his business and tried his damnedest to recover from a major blunder on his back nine Sunday. He had gotten within one stroke of the lead on multiple occasions, but it was a double bogey on the par-4 14th that ultimately took his name out of FedEx Cup contention. With only one victory to his credit on the season, Im's consistency finally paid dividends in the form of a shared second-place check. He entered the postseason with back-to-back runner-up finishes and rode this momentum into three straight top-15 finishes. It's easy to forget Im is only 24, and who is to say a Scheffler-type season is not on the horizon for him as he now hopes to lead the international team to a massive upset in the Presidents Cup in September.

4. Xander Schauffele (-18): The East Lake savant was one of three players to touch the lead during the Tour Championship, but Schauffele immediately back tracked once he did. Without the Saturday rain delay, perhaps we are discussing a different story, but in the end, the weekend was his eventual undoing. One of only four players to not break par in the third round, Schauffele wasn't able to keep up with his playing competitor, Scheffler, and eventually the rest of the field.

T5. Max Homa, Justin Thomas (-17):  Homa, the man who claimed the first tournament of the 2021-22 campaign, bookended his season in impressive fashion. Playing his final 56 holes in 18 under, Homa was able to climb from the depths of the leaderboard and into a seven-figure paycheck. The self-belief king should only continue this trajectory heading into next year as he has added two victories, a top-five finish at the Tour Championship and (more than likely) an appearance for the United States in the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow -- the site of his first PGA Tour win -- to his playing résumé.

T7. Patrick Cantlay, Sepp Straka (-16): This week had all the makings of back-to-back FedEx Cup titles for Cantlay as the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year was just an adequate putting performance away from claiming the year's top prize. Beginning the week in the second position at 8 under, the Californian was a mainstay on the first page of the leaderboard despite some struggles on the greens. Cantlay was among the leaders in both ball-striking metrics yet uncharacteristically ranked outside the top 25 in strokes gained putting out of just 29 players. He was statistically better than last season, but despite that achievement, the 30-year-old's hardware haul of the Zurich Classic and the BMW Championship feels a smidge light.

Rory retakes lead after wild 16th

Finding the fairway bunker, McIlroy flew the green with his approach. Hitting the pin off a fiery lie behind the green, the Northern Irishman was able to get up-and-down with a 7-foot par save. Meanwhile Scheffler failed to save par from the greenside bunker giving McIlroy the solo lead at 21 under. Ahead, Im is on No. 18 at 20 under and will look for an eagle-3 to shake things up.

Rory makes a mess of 14

He had to hit a 5-footer to save bogey after blocking his approach shot. Down one with four holes to go. Intensity is cranking up as Scheffler is fist pumping and Rory was on his knees begging for a pitch shot to hurry. Good stuff at East Lake.

Max Homa's rise

In 2017, Homa missed 15 of 17 cuts and made $18,000 for the year on the PGA Tour. Today, he's in position to potentially win $4 million by finishing third at the Tour Championship. He's currently T5 with a few holes to play.

Costly double bogey for Sungjae Im

After getting to within one stroke of the lead, Sungjae Im backtracked in a big way on the difficult par-4 14th. Making double bogey without a penalty stroke, the South Korean has likely taken himself out of contention for the FedEx Cup as he sits alone in third place.

2024 US Open leaderboard, scores, highlights: Rory McIlroy tied for lead after first round

The 2024 U.S. Open began Thursday at Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course in North Carolina.

Temperatures are expected to get into the 90s this weekend at golf's third major of the year and the competition should be just as hot.

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay are the co-leaders after the opening round, each shooting a 5-under 65. McIlroy, a four-time major champ, played bogey-free golf and carded five birdies while Cantlay had six birdies and one bogey. Trailing the pair is Ludvig Aberg (4 under) and then Matthieu Pavon and Bryson DeChambeau at 3 under.

Rory McIlroy 'delighted' with bogey-free opening round

Rory McIlroy said he had “very high” control through the first round.

“I felt like I controlled most aspects of my game really well. Controlled myself, controlled my mind,” he said after shooting a 5-under 65 for the co-lead on Thursday. “I was very disciplined when I needed to be. Kept hitting the ball pin-high on my approach shot, which is really important here. Just relentless trying to hit fairways and trying to hit greens.”

McIlroy said he’s “delighted with the start” and “looking forward to getting back out there in the morning.” The last time McIlroy shot a bogey-free opening round at the U.S. Open was in 2011, when he won the major title.

Bryson DeChambeau 'confident' after tweaking drive

Bryson DeChambeau said he felt “really confident” on Thursday after tweaking his swing. It paid off — DeChambeau only missed two fairways in the opening round.

“Every hole, I was striping it,” DeChambeau said after finishing 3 under on the day. “I’ve been working on some stuff on the driving range and it's been working amazing. I’m very lucky.”

As for the tweak? “I made a little tweak with my left arm, which allowed my face angle to just go through a lot better,” DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open winner, said.

Bryson DeChambeau tied for fourth after opening round

Bryson DeChambeau won his first and only major title at the 2020 U.S. Open and he’s put himself in prime position to win the tournament again. DeChambeau finished his opening round at Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course in North Carolina at 3 under after posting four birdies and one bogey. DeChambeau, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, is tied for fourth place with Matthieu Pavon.

Scottie Scheffler finishes uneven day 1 over

Scottie Scheffler will have some ground to make up on Friday. The World No. 1 finished the first round of the 2024 U.S. Open at 1 over on Thursday after hitting three bogeys and two birdies. Although he’s tied for 40th place, Scheffler is only six strokes off the lead. Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, is looking for his first title at the U.S. Open. His best finish at the tournament was eighth place in 2021.

Bryson DeChambeau cards first bogey

Bryson DeChambeau’s bogey-free streak in the opening round of the U.S. Open has ended. DeChambeau overshot the green on his second stroke on hole No. 7 (436-yard, Par 4) and the ball rolled all the way over to the spectator stands erected behind the marker. He rebounded nicely and nearly birdied on his chip shot. He had the opportunity to save par with his putter, but the ball came up short of the hole. He dropped to 3 under in the opening round following his first bogey of the day.

Rory McIlroy finishes first round with flourish to move into tie for first

McIlroy drilled a birdie putt on the par-4 18th to finish his round tied with Patrick Cantlay atop the leaderboard at 5 under. The four-time major champ played bogey-free golf and carded five birdies.

Rory McIlroy remains bogey-free, tied for second

It’s been 10 years since Rory McIlroy won his last major — PGA Championship in 2014 — but he’s putting himself in a position to end his title drought. McIlroy moved up to second place with a birdie on No. 16 (523 yards, Par-4) to bring him to 4-unde, tied with Bryson DeChambeau and Ludvig Aberg. McIlroy has been dialed in at Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course on Thursday and has picked up four birdies with no bogeys so far. The last three times McIlroy has had a bogey-free opening round, he’s went on to win a major (2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship and 2014 Open Championship).

Bryson DeChambeau nearly hits ball out of bounds, but still birdies

DeChambeau made the best out of a tricky situation. He teed off on hole No. 5 (par 5, 582 yards) and nearly drove it out of bounds, landing to the right of the fairway near the perimeter fence. But DeChambeau found the green on his next stroke and two-putted the ball in for a birdie, his fourth of the first round. With the birdie, DeChambeau moves to 4-under for the tournament and is now tied with Ludvig Aberg for second place.

Xander Schauffele picks up fourth bogey

Xander Schauffele, who is coming off his first major win at the 2024 PGA Championship last month, has been all over the place. Yet, he’s even so far in the first round  at Pinehurst Resort's No. 2 course in North Carolina. Schauffele picked up a bogey on hole No. 14, his fourth of the round. He’s also had four birdies to keep him right in the mix. He’s currently tied for 21st place.

Bryson DeChambeau moves up leaderboard

Bryson DeChambeau is now tied for third place thanks to a birdie on hole No. 3 – his third of the day. DeChambeau is tied with Rory McIlroy and Matthieu Pavon at 3-under for the tournament.

DeChambeau last won the U.S. Open in 2020 at Winged Foot. He was close to winning his second major title last month, but finished in second place at the 2024 PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler score pars at No. 12

Rory McIlroy drove the ball 329 yards up the middle of the fairway on hole No. 12 (4-par, 489-yard). The same cannot be said for his partner Scottie Scheffler, who ended up in the rough to the left of the fairway. Scheffler’s club appeared to catch a weed in the patchy grass on his next stroke, causing him to pull the ball and end up in the bunker. The world No. 1 somehow avoided disaster. He found the green from the bunker and saved par with a short putt to stay at 1-over for the tournament.

McIlroy had an opportunity to birdie, but narrowly missed to the left of the hole. The world No. 3 remains at 3-under for the day.

Rory McIlroy tied for third place after birdie

Rory McIlroy is climbing up the leaderboard. McIlroy scored a birdie on No. 10, his third of the first round. The Northern Irish golfer’s putter has not let him down so far. McIlroy is a perfect 9-for-9 on the green when putting from inside ten feet. McIlroy is now 3-under for the tournament and tied for third with France’s Matthieu Pavon.

Bryson DeChambeau chips in for birdie

Bryson DeChambeau fell short of winning the 2024 PGA Championship with a second-place finish, but he’s trying to put himself in position to win another U.S. Open on Thursday.

He had a bad tee shot on the par-4 18th hole, but recovered to save par. But 52 feet away from the hole, DeChambeau chipped in his shot for a birdie and put himself at 2-under joining the collective list of golfers tied for fourth place.

Top group finishes front nine at U.S. Open

The group that features the top three golfers in the world – Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy – are halfway done with the first round and leading the pack is the man looking to win his first major in a decade.

McIlroy is 2-under par and that has him tied for fourth place and three shots behind leader Patrick Cantlay. Schauffele, the 2024 PGA Championship winner, and Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 ranked golfer, have gotten off the slower starts with them both at 1-over par.

Scottie Scheffler struggling early at U.S. Open

It hasn’t been the ideal start to the day for the world No. 1 golf player. Scottie Scheffler is 2-over par through six holes.

His first bogey of the day came on the par-4 third hole when he had back-to-back shots in the bunker that threw a wrench in his momentum. On the par-3 sixth hole, Scheffler was left with long putts after his tee shot misfired. He three-putted the hole for his second bogey of the day.

Rory McIlroy holes out with impressive chip shot

Could this be the weekend Rory McIlroy finally captures another elusive major title? It sure is looking like it.

After he got his first birdie on the fourth hole, McIlroy’s first shot on the par-5 fifth hole went into the native area and looked to spell disaster. But he recovered to set up his fourth shot from 66 feet away. McIlroy then laid the ball perfectly in front of the hole, watched it bounce and then roll into the pin as the crowd erupted in cheer. McIlroy is now 2-under par and tied for fourth place.

Rory McIlroy gets under par on hole No. 4

Rory McIlroy has been playing an aggressive style of golf early in the first round, and it finally paid off on the fourth hole.

On his second shot of the par-4 hole, McIlroy drilled it from 208 yards away from the flag and perfectly laid it on the green, seven feet away from the hole. The putter was betraying him on the first few holes, but he found a connection this time and got a birdie to get under par.

Xander Schauffele gets rare birdie on hole No. 2

The par-4 second hole has been a challenging one so far in the first round with only one birdie made so far on Thursday. But Xander Schauffele, the 2024 PGA Champion, wasn’t fazed by the challenging hole, scoring a birdie to get under par early in his round. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler scored par.

Patrick Cantlay finishes first round of U.S. Open with lead

It was a putting clinic for Patrick Cantlay on Thursday as he scored birdies on three of the last five holes on the back nine to finish the round 5-under-par and on top of the leaderboard.

Ludvig Aberg stands one shot back at 4 under with his round also complete.

Cantlay shot only 23 putts in the first round, the fewest number of shots he’s taken during a round of a major championship with the putter. He said he brought four putters with him to Pinehurst, but the one he opted to use on Thursday was clearly working for him.

“Feeling good about my game,” Cantlay said on the broadcast. “I've been working hard, and I just got to keep putting myself in the fairway, giving myself opportunities and did a good job of that today.”

Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler tee off

One of the most star-studded groups of first round has gotten underway at Pinehurst with the top three golfers in the world – Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy – teeing off.

McIlroy won the 2011 U.S. Open and always remains a favorite to win another major. Schauffele won the most recent major at the 2024 PGA Championship, and Scheffler is the No. 1 golfer in the world and has been playing lights out with five wins already in 2024.

All three golfers had pristine first shots off the tee on the first hole and got to the green in two shots. McIlroy had a solid chance of getting a birdie to start the day, but the putt fell just short. All three players scored par on the first hole.

Shaky putter leaves Tiger Woods at 4 over after first round

Tiger Woods' putter let him down on more than one occasion during his opening round of 4-over-par 74 on Thursday .

Hitting just 9 of 18 greens in regulation, Woods put extra pressure on himself to save par with the putter – and Pinehurst's fast, convex greens were not very hospitable.

A stretch of five bogeys in seven holes midway through his round included a trio of three-putts. His only birdies were on the course's two par 5s.

He'll need a much better outcome when he tees off Friday afternoon if he wants to make the 36-hole cut.

In Woods' two previous appearances in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, he finished tied for third behind Payne Stewart in 1999 and runner-up to Michael Campbell in 2005. He did not play in the Open the last time it was held at Pinehurst in 2014, when Martin Kaymer prevailed.

No. 5 at Pinehurst offering relief in Round 1

The fifth hole at Pinehurst is proving to be the one vulnerable place to attack this very demanding course.

Sweden's Ludvig Aberg became the latest golfer to go under par on the 582-yard par 5, reaching the edge of the green in two and getting up and down for birdie to put him at 4-under for the tournament.

That allowed Aberg to move into a tie for the lead with France's Matthieu Pavon, who eagled No. 5 earlier in his round. American Patrick Cantlay joined the party with a birdie on 5 and added another birdie from 21 feet on the treacherous par-3 sixth.

Cantlay has three holes to play in his round.

Aberg, who started on the back nine, has completed 14 holes. Pavon is through 13.

Matthieu Pavon snatches lead at U.S. Open

On the strength of his second eagle of the day, Frenchman Matthieu Pavon has surged to the top of the leaderboard at Pinehurst.

Pavon got into red figures with an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole, added a birdie on the par-4 eighth and took the lead outright by nailing his second eagle putt on the 10th to get to 5-under par for the tournament.

Two-time U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka is among a group of three players two strokes behind. He's at 3-under through 12 holes and is joined by fellow American Russell Henley and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg.

Two-time US Open winner Brooks Koepka on the leaderboard

After an early surge by Tiger Woods, another former U.S. Open champion has risen to the top of the leaderboard early in Round 1.

Brooks Koepka, who won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, is tied for the lead at 3-under par through 10 holes. France's Matthieu Pavon is also at minus-3 through eight.

Koepka birdied both of the course's par-5 holes and has yet to card a bogey in his opening round.

Pavon eagled the par-5 fifth hole and added another birdie on the front side to pull into the tie. Seven golfers are tied for third, one stroke back.

After an opening birdie, Woods has bogeyed four of his last five holes to drop back to 3-over.

When does Scottie Scheffler tee off at the US Open?

2022 U.S. Open runner-up Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 ranked player and five-time winner on tour this year, is scheduled to tee off at 1:14 p.m. ET with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.

Scheffler is the odds-on-favorite to win the Open.

Brooks Koepka grabs share of early lead

Half of the 156-player field is on the course at Pinehurst, and two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka is once again on top of the leaderboard. Through his first seven holes, Koepka is tied with fellow American Logan McAllister at 2-under par.

Tiger Woods opened his round with a birdie, but consecutive bogeys dropped him back to 1-over through eight holes.

Just 13 players are in red figures, compared to 44 who are over par in the early going.

Tiger Woods bogeys to drop back to even

A wayward drive into the rough at hole No. 16 led to Tiger Woods' first bogey of the opening round.

Woods hit his drive left of the fairway into the native grass and had to lay up on his second shot. His 20-foot putt for par just slid by the right side of the cup.

The bogey countered his opening birdie on No. 10 to leave Woods even for his round.

No one has really set the course on fire in the early going, as there have been far more bogeys (and worse) than birdies. Sixteen players -- including Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa and Sergio Garcia -- are tied for the lead at 1-under par.

Wyndham Clark begins US Open title defense

Wyndham Clark is frustrated with the state of his game and just looking to produce four solid rounds when he starts his U.S. Open defense this week at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

The American was the major tournament's surprise winner last year when he held off Rory McIlroy on the back nine for a one-stroke victory at Los Angeles Country Club.

Clark is not brimming with confidence following missed cuts in three of his last five starts including the Masters and PGA Championship.

"I haven't been playing my best golf," Clark told reporters on Monday.

"It's been kind of a tough stretch these last few weeks. Really I'm trying to gain some momentum for the rest of the season. I know that maybe sounds like low expectations for the week, but honestly I'd love to just gain some momentum.

Tiger Woods off to a strong start

Tiger Woods is off to a solid start through his first six holes at Pinehurst.

Starting his round with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole, Woods put together a string of pars through hole No. 15.

His putting has been excellent, helping the three-time U.S. Open champion convert a par save out of the bunker on 12.

He just narrowly missed pulling into a tie for the lead when a 12-foot birdie attempt didn't fall on 14.

At 1-under, Woods is one stroke behind leader Ludvig Aberg.

Tiger Woods begins opening round with birdie

Tiger Woods' opening round at the 124th U.S. Open is underway -- and he's already in red figures.

The 15-time major champion found the native grass on his second shot at the par-5 10th hole. From 56 yards away, he pitched onto the green to 11 feet and nailed the birdie putt.

Playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick also birdied the hole.

They are two of five players at the top of the early leaderboard at 1-under for the tournament.

Amateurs, first-timers in 2024 US Open field

There are 156 golfers in the field for the 2024 U.S. Open but for 36 of them, this will be their first crack at playing in the national championship.

The list includes the No. 6-ranked player in the world (Ludvig Aberg), the 2023 DP World Tour Championship winner (Nicolai Hojgaard), the 2024 NCAA individual champion (Hiroshi Tai), a 37-year-old mini-tour grinder (John Chin) as well as 12 amateurs.

Pinehurst course info for U.S. Open

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2 will be set up at 7,548 yards and will play to a par of 35-35 — 70. The yardage for each round of the championship will vary due to course setup and conditions.

The course normally plays as a par 72, but two par 5s will be played as par 4s for the U.S. Open. As a result, there are only two par 5s on the course.

Rory McIlroy chasing elusive fifth major

Rory McIlroy is still chasing an elusive fifth major title after winning his fourth nearly a decade ago but the Northern Irishman has not given up hope and enters this week's U.S. Open feeling closer than ever to ending his drought.

McIlroy owns 39 worldwide professional victories, 26 of which have come on the PGA Tour, but he cannot seem to escape questions about his results at golf's blue-riband events given his last major win came at the PGA Championship in August 2014.

"I'm really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors," McIlroy, 35, said Tuesday.

"Obviously getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while, but I'm more confident than ever that I'm right there, that I'm as close as I've ever been."

How can I watch the U.S. Open on TV?

The 2024 U.S. Open golf championship will be broadcast live on NBC and on USA Network, with coverage also on NBC's Peacock streaming service. Thursday's Round 1 broadcast schedule is as follows (all times Eastern):

  • 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m.: USA Network
  • 5-8 p.m.: Peacock

Streaming coverage of several featured groups (including Tiger Woods, Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick) is available online at USOpen.com .

U.S. Open weather forecast for Thursday

It'll be a warm day at Pinehurst Resort. As the first groups teed off, it was 67 degrees and partly sunny. However, temperatures are expected to climb up to around 90 in the afternoon with mostly sunny skies and 5-10 mph winds.

When does Tiger Woods play?

Woods will be in a group with Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick for the first and second rounds. He tees off at 7:29 a.m. ET on Thursday , starting on hole No. 10.

Tiger Woods: U.S. Open weather will ‘feel like home’

After a pair of disappointing finishes in the year's first two major tournaments, Tiger Woods has a much more optimistic outlook heading into the U.S. Open .

There won't be the hilly terrain of the Masters or the wet weather of the PGA. Instead, North Carolina's Pinehurst Resort expects to see playing conditions that are more well-suited to his game.

"It's gonna feel like home," Woods told reporters Tuesday morning. "Hot and humid we deal with every day in Florida. It's just a matter of keeping hydrated and the mental tax the heat will bring − not just on me; everyone will be tested."

– Steve Gardner

Rory McIlroy had plenty of highlights in mounting the greatest comeback in Tour Championship history.

McIlroy fired a 4-under 67 Sunday at East Lake to overcome a six-shot deficit to Scottie Scheffler, clipping Scheffler and Sungjae Im by a shot and breaking Camilo Villegas’ record from 2008, when he rallied from five shots down after 54 holes to win.

McIlroy bogeyed his opening hole, but two holes later, he stuck his approach at 6 feet at the par-4 third and rolled in his first birdie of the round. He also birdied the par-4 fifth hole from 10 feet to pull within three shots of Scheffler.

The birdie at No. 5 sparked a run of three straight birdies for McIlroy, who canned an 18-footer for birdie at the par-4 seventh after an up-and-down birdie at the par-5 sixth. Just like that, McIlroy was tied with Scheffler for the lead at 20 under.

McIlroy cooled off after that as it appeared Scheffler was righting the ship. However, McIlroy re-tied the lead after a 6-foot birdie make at No. 12.

After making a mess of the par-4 14th hole and carding bogey to again fall out of the lead, McIlroy roared back in a big way at the par-3 15th hole by rolling in a 32-foot birdie on the island green. As he grabbed yet another share of the lead, McIlroy screamed, “Come on!”

With Scheffler bogeying No. 16, McIlroy entered the final two holes with the solo lead. While Scheffler fanned his second shot right at the par-5 18th hole and eventually got in with par, McIlroy got help from the grandstands as he yanked his second into the crowd at the finishing hole.

After the free relief, McIlroy secured the win by tapping in his $18 million par putt.

U.S. Open Fact or Fiction: Bryson DeChambeau Would Be the Most Popular Winner

Jeff ritter , bob harig , john schwarb , john pluym | 9 minutes ago.

Bryson DeChambeau enters the weekend one shot back at Pinehurst.

Welcome to the Day 2 U.S. Open edition of SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction. We’ll be here after every day’s play with a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

Bryson DeChambeau is contending for his second U.S. Open title and, like last month at the PGA Championship, getting plenty of support from galleries. Of the players on the first page of the leaderboard, he would be the most popular winner.

Bob Harig: FICTION. Bryson would be very popular. But Rory McIlroy more so, simply because of his quest for a fifth major and his overall body of work. Give us a Rory-Bryson pairing on Sunday and let’s see how that shakes out.

John Pluym: FACT. DeChambeau had the galleries behind him at the PGA Championship, as well as the Masters. The galleries seem to gravitate to him, and he has an excellent shot to win his second U.S. Open, which wouldn’t be surprising at this point. He had an up-and-down round Friday but when he needed a birdie the most, he got one on 18 and the fans loved it. And it’s a good bet DeChambeau will have the fans on his side this weekend.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION McIlroy-DeChambeau would be a dream Sunday pairing, and I think DeChambeau’s showmanship, improved attitude and social media presence have combined to endear him to a lot of fans. But around here, we don't measure "popularity" by who gets the loudest cheers on site — it is one stat and one stat only: pageviews, baby! A Bryson win would be fun. But a Rory win would be a transcendent, international story that readers across the globe would gobble up. He's the most popular hypothetical winner.

John Schwarb: FACT. I think golf media may underestimate Bryson’s popularity off the course, with his social media and YouTube presence (690,000 subscribers!). And absence has apparently made the heart grow fonder as PGA Tour fans have come back around to him with the few times he plays. As Bob said, Rory-Bryson would be a heckuva litmus test but I’m not so sure Rory will prevail.

Rory McIlroy sits in a tie for fifth and will play in the third-to-last group Saturday. The best place to strike on Moving Day is from a few strokes off the pace.

Bob Harig: FICTION. The fewest strokes wins and it’s always better to not be chasing. That said, this is a good spot for McIlroy. He absolutely would have taken this position at the beginning of the week and it never hurts to be able to put some pressure on those behind you. A long way to go, however, and Rory would likely taken being two shots back going into the final round, too.

John Pluym: FICTION. I don’t think it matters what group you’re in as long as you put together a good round of golf. McIlroy had to grind Friday and was up to the challenge. He seems locked in to win this championship. The biggest thing for him is avoiding a major mistake. And I thought the decision he made on the par-5 5th to take his medicine—unlike his playing partners—was smart. Will it mean the difference between winning and losing? We’ll see. But I like his chances and maybe he finally breaks through to win his first major in 10 years.

Jeff Ritter: FACT. This is a good spot for Rory, who’s squarely in the tournament but not necessarily facing “it’s his event to lose” type of pressure like, say, the British Open at St. Andrews. It’s Moving Day for a reason: someone 2 or more shots off the lead right now is a good bet to make Sunday’s final pairing.

John Schwarb: FACT. I like Rory’s spot. He’ll draw massive galleries of course and if he can hang up some red numbers the leading two groups will be bound to notice.

After his surprising 4-over 74, Scottie Scheffler said of Pinehurst No. 2: “The only aspect I don’t really love is the unpredictability of the native areas. I would have preferred for it to be just normal Bermuda rough.” The PGA Tour would never play a course with variables like this one.

Bob Harig: FICTION. It would if it could. There are not many venues such as Pinehurst to pick from but there have been courses that are not simply fairway and rough. Scheffler’s desire is understandable but part of the allure of such a venue.

John Pluym: FICTION. The goal of the PGA Tour should be to provide a stern test week to week. Players should be rewarded for playing smart golf. Does that mean all courses are created equal with Bermuda rough? No. If Scheffler would have kept the ball out of the native areas, he would have had a chance to contend this weekend. Pinehurst No. 2 penalized him for not playing well. Again, take your medicine. He wasn’t willing to do that on the 5th hole and it cost him.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. The PGA Tour would happily travel to a venue like Pinehurst, but as Bob mentioned, what venue out there is like this one?

John Schwarb: FICTION. With a big enough check from a sponsor I think the Tour would go anywhere once. But the collective complaining from players—who now have equity in their workplace—would probably preclude a long-term stay at a place where good shots aren’t always rewarded.

Tiger Woods said he’s in a “pick your poison” situation where he can’t play more tournaments and risk injury but in turn isn’t playing enough to be sharp. He should add some no-cut PGA Tour signature events next year to get reps but continue to rest immediately before majors.

Bob Harig: FACT. I would probably alter this answer that he should add some events, period. Whether the signature events work in his favor or not is another story. His own tournament, the Genesis Invitational, would work, but it has a cut—as does the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Both are spaced properly to allow him to some build-up and recuperation time. But the bottom line is Tiger needs some continuity. Playing a bit this fall and into 2025 is what he needs to do if possible.

John Pluym: FACT. Tiger is never going to be the same player because of the injuries. He looked great driving the ball Thursday and Friday. But his short game and putting aren’t good enough to contend to win a major. He needs reps. He knows it. Which means he needs to play more tournaments. But can his body handle the extra work? If it can, he could still win again. But how much does he want to push it? I think he’s struggling with the answer to that question.

Jeff Ritter: FACT. He already has the Hero and the Father-Son in December, plus the Genesis in February. I think he might try Bay Hill and the Memorial if his health allows and his schedule lines up. That would probably be enough to enter the majors with less rust than we saw from him at Pinehurst.

John Schwarb: FACT. He is still terrific tee-to-green but the short game continues to leave him in majors. How else can he fix that? He realistically only has a couple more years to make things interesting and all golf fans would love to see him give them a fair shot.

Pinehurst No. 2

U.S. Open 2024: Watch Rory McIlroy putt one off the green(!)—and still make par(!!)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/240614-rory-mcilroy.png

Rory McIlroy made Pinehurst No. 2 look easier than anyone else on Thursday with a bogey-free 65 that gave him a share of the first-round lead. But like most golfers, McIlroy is finding things a bit tougher out there on Friday.

Beginning on the back nine, the four-time major champ finally made his first blemish of the week on No. 11. Then added another bogey on No. 15. And on No. 17, it looked like he'd drop a least another shot for sure after an unusual occurrence.

RELATED: This Rory McIlroy driver stinger is pure filth

McIlroy found the green on the par 3, but then putted his birdie attempt off the green. Crazy. But even crazier is that he followed that up by chipping in. Have a look at what has to be one of the wildest pars of McIlroy's career.

Incredible. And who knows? Come Sunday, this could be the sequence we're crediting for McIlroy finally ending his decade-long major championship drought.

After holing his chip, you can see McIlroy give a wave to the crowd with his head down almost as if he's ashamed. But as they always say, there are no pictures—or videos—on the scorecard. And there are no bad pars at a U.S. Open.

U.S. Open live updates: Ludvig Aberg leads; Scottie Scheffler barely makes cut

Texas tech’s aberg has a one-stroke lead over smu’s bryson dechambeau and a two-stroke lead over rory mcilroy..

Ludvig Aberg, of Sweden, waves after making a putt on the 12th hole during the second round...

9:51 AM on Jun 13, 2024 CDT — Updated at 4:24 PM on Jun 14, 2024 CDT

The U.S. Open is underway at Pinehurst No. 2, and no one was expecting an easy time .

The greens at Pinehurst No. 2 are the signature of this Donald Ross course that hosts the 124th edition of the U.S. Open which started Thursday morning. They go by any variety of names — upside-down cereal bowls, inverted saucers, turtlebacks or domes. Whatever they’re called, they are universally regarded as daunting, particularly for a U.S. Open already known as the toughest test in golf.

Ludvig Aberg is taking a one-stroke lead into Saturday after shooting 1-under on Friday. He maintains a one-stroke lead on Bryson DeChambeau and a two-stroke lead on Rory McIlroy.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler narrowly made the cut into the weekend. He finished at 5-over, which ended up being the exact cut line.

Below we’ll be keeping track of all the Dallas-area golfers in the field such as the world’s No. 1 Scottie Scheffler , Jordan Spieth and many others throughout the weekend. Some have already completed their first rounds, while others were not set to tee off until the afternoon:

(This story will be updated throughout the day. To see a full U.S. Open leaderboard, click here .)

Scottie Scheffler

Third round: +6, thru 4 (T-59)

The best player in golf is a favorite no matter where he plays. Scheffler is coming off a PGA Championship where he was briefly arrested and jailed. He still tied for eighth at Valhalla and was a runner-up the following week at Colonial. He won last week at the Memorial Tournament, his fifth victory in his last eight tournaments. His tee-to-green, and chipping, should come in handy at Pinehurst No. 2.

Related: How to watch the 2024 U.S. Open: TV channels, streaming, tee times and more

Jordan Spieth

Second round: +3, F (T-37)

Spieth became the youngest player since Bob Jones in 1923 to win the U.S. Open with his one-stroke victory in 2015 at Chambers Bay. The win made him the sixth player to win the U.S. Open and Masters in the same year. However, the Dallas native has struggled at the event since, finishing no higher than T-19 in 2021 .

Bryson DeChambeau

Second round: -4, F (T-2)

DeChambeau reminded the golf world of his level of entertainment with his runner-up finish at beefy Valhalla. Power never hurts in golf. But control going into and around the greens is paramount. This will be his challenge.

Ludvig Aberg

Second round: -5, F (1)

Since turning professional in June 2023, the former Texas Tech All-American has made a quick ascension up the rankings, earning a spot on Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup Team before ever making a start in a major championship. He finished in second at this year’s Masters but missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

Will Zalatoris

Second round: +8, F (T-98, missed cut)

The Plano resident has been within arm’s reach of a U.S. Open title twice in his young career . In 2022, he came within a putt on the 72nd hole of forcing a playoff with eventual champion Matt Fitzpatrick. He finished T-6 in 2020. Zalatoris was sidelined most of the 2023 season after undergoing back surgery.

Second round: -1, F (T-9)

Kim, a Dallas resident , has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the game since tying for 23rd in his U.S. Open debut at The Country Club in 2022. The 21-year-old claimed a pair of PGA Tour events in 2022: the Wyndham Championship and Shriners Children’s Open.

The Fargo, N.D., native will make his seventh U.S. Open start after being among the top 60 points leaders in the Official World Golf Ranking on May 20. At Texas Christian University, Hoge posted two victories and tied for third in the 2009 NCAA Division I Championship.

Sam Bennett

Second round: +1, F (T-22)

The 2022 U.S. Amateur champion will tee it up in his third consecutive U.S. Open after posting 5-under-par 135 at the Duke University Golf Club final qualifier. The former Texas A&M All-American turned pro after earning low-amateur honors in the 2023 Masters by finishing tied for 16th.

2024 U.S. Open odds, golf picks: Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods predictions by model that hit the Masters, PGA

W yndham Clark never finished better than 75th in any of his first five majors entering last year's U.S. Open. However, anyone who put faith in Clark reaped the rewards after he won at 100-1 as one of the longest longshots to ever win a U.S. Open. Is there a golfer in the 2024 U.S. Open field that can hit big for 2024 U.S. Open bets with a shocking victory at the U.S. Open 2024, which tees off Thursday from Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina? Justin Rose entered the PGA Championship after missing the cut in his previous three majors, but the 43-year-old finished T-6 at the last major. Rose is 100-1 in the latest 2024 U.S. Open odds.

Could Rose be a longshot candidate to consider for 2024 U.S. Open your 2024 U.S. Open predictions? Those more inclined to play favorites may want to target Scottie Scheffler, the 11-4 favorite among the 2024 U.S. Open golfers. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau all follow at 10-1 in the current U.S. Open odds 2024. Before locking in your 2024 U.S. Open picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 U.S. Open is approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising.  Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2024 U.S. Open leaderboard .

2024 U.S. Open predictions for Brooks Koepka, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy

One shocker the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2024: Xander Schauffele (10-1), fresh off his first major win at the PGA Championship and one of the top favorites this week, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. There are better values on this week's PGA odds board.

Schauffele has experienced nothing but success in the U.S. Open with seven top-25s across seven starts. However, none of those appearances came at Pinehurst No. 2. The course, with its firm fairways and greens that run out, plays more like a links course that is seen at the British Open. Two of Pinehurst's biggest comps are Royal Liverpool and Royal Portrush, and Schauffele finished 17th and 41st, respectively, at those venues.

If there's one weakness in Schauffele's game, it's with his driver as he ranks outside the top 25 in both distance and accuracy. In addition, he ranks 173rd in total driving efficiency, and Pinehurst greatly penalizes shots that don't land on the fairway. Also, going back-to-back in majors is extremely rare since Jordan Spieth in 2015 was the last to do so. Given this, and his extremely short odds, Schauffele is one to fade with U.S. Open 2024 bets.  See who else to fade here .

The model has also locked in its projection for Tiger Woods (125-1), a 15-time major winner. Woods has recorded 15 major victories, second behind Jack Nicklaus' 18. With lingering health issues, Woods hasn't recorded a top-10 in a U.S. Open since 2010, however.

The 48-year-old is easily the most recognizable player of his generation and therefore may attract bets from those who hope he can turn back the clock. After all, Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship at age 50. For golf fans everywhere, watching Woods play four rounds of competitive play would be a highlight of their U.S. Open viewing experience.  See where every golfer finishes here .

On the other hand, the model has examined Rory McIlroy's (10-1) chances to win his second U.S. Open after being victorious in 2011. McIlroy is a 26-time PGA Tour winner with four major titles, but the 35-year-old hasn't won a major since 2014. He nearly snapped that streak at last year's U.S. Open, finishing second and one behind Clark in his shocking U.S. Open victory. McIlroy has finished in the top 10 in each of his last four U.S. Open events after missing the cut in the prior three U.S. Opens before his current run of top-10 results.

McIlroy has two victories over 13 events this season and is third in the FedEx Cup standings. He's won two of his last five tournaments while finishing in the top 15 in each of his last five tournaments. But with McIlroy winless in his last 34 majors and having the second-shortest odds to win the 2024 U.S. Open, 10-1 odds may be a hard bet to justify. He's one of the most talented golfers on the PGA Tour, so there's plenty to like but also to question about including McIlroy at his price in 2024 U.S. Open bets.  See the full U.S. Open projections from the model here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is targeting three golfers with 2024 U.S. Open odds of 20-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's 2024 U.S. Open picks here .

Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open, which longshots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy finish? Check out the latest 2024 U.S. Open odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected U.S. Open 2024 leaderboard, all from the model that has nailed 12 golf majors , including this year's Masters and PGA Championship.
