Two things make up the quintessential Italian breakfast : a cappuccino and a croissant. A bunch of cafes have been serving their own versions of these Italian classics for decades — and sometimes a century like Sciascia, founded in 1919.

If you and your loved one feel like treating yourselves to such a decadent breakfast, plus a few cannoli, and all the other sweet delicacies Italians are notorious for munching on in the morning, head to suggestive cafes like Sant’Eustachio (est. 1938) or Tazza d’Oro (1944).

2. Ride a bike along the Tiber

The Tiber River has split the Eternal City in two ever since its founding in 753 BCE. While a stroll along its embankments is of course one of the top Rome couple activities, you’ll miss some must-sees if you stick to the historic core around Piazza Navona.

Rome, and the Colosseum would pop to mind with its gory history of savage lions, brave gladiators and captive audience.

Think romance and you'd probably veer towards Venice but Rome , with its hidden cafes, ivy encrusted alleys and beautiful lookouts makes for one very romantic setting. The Italians of Rome , the modern-day Romans or the " Romani " are a passionate lot and the architecture and picturesque views reflect their ardor. Here are the ten most romantic spots of Rome , in no particular order...

1. The garden of the Oranges

The fragrant orange blossoms, fantastic views of many of Rome's magnificent monuments and the gorgeously sun-dappled walkways make the Giardino Degli Aranci , also known as the Parco Savello a beautifully romantic place to be in Rome.

The garden lies behind the Basilica of Santa Sabina and to one side lie the beautiful ruins of the wall that once surrounded the Savelli Castle . You can hire a Segway or walk to the garden from the Circus Maximus .

It takes some effort but is completely worth it. So come and watch the sun set amidst the beauty that is Rome , surrounded with the citrusy scent of oranges and in peaceful silence ; and be prepared to let passion overtake you as you kiss your loved one.

Romance is in the air when it comes to the garden of the oranges and the silence lends itself to the intimacy beautifully.

2. Villa Borghese

But looking at art while is an excellent way to pass time, it's not what makes the Villa Borghese romantic. For some romance, it's the gardens you must see with its huge trees, many statues, hidden little fountains and even a little pond.

The setting is absolutely romantic be it for a stroll, conversation or just some quality time. If rowing a boat on a picturesque little lake hold more romantic appeal to you then visit the Temple of Aesculapius at Villa Borghese - where you can rent a boat and spend a romantic evening gazing into each other's eyes.

3. Pincio Gardens

Else hire bicycles, carriages or even segways to spend a more active date - Pincio gardens basically will give you an entire view of  Rome and has excellent cafes to catch a bite at.

There's a small lake in the middle with many benches around and chances are you'll find many a canoodling couple there.

An ideal place to have some coffee, conversation and kisses ! If you get bored, you can even catch a mini steam train to the Borghese garden instead.

4. Ponte Sant'Angelo

Once a bridge accessed by a ramp on the River Tiber that it spans, the Ponte Sant'Angelo aka the bridge of angels is now solely pedestrian and provides beautiful views of Castel Sant'Angelo .

For a bridge that is now quite the kissing destination , it has a gory past.

For centuries after the 16th century, it was used to display the bodies of those executed by the church - for heresy and other crimes.

Even before that in 1450, when the pilgrims used the bridge to get to St. Peter's Basilica , the bridge collapsed drowning many of them instead.

Now it's a dream to walk on during twilight hours - the languid water, the reflecting lights - all just add to Rome and your lover's allure.

5. Campidoglio

If you know anybody who's had or planned an Italian wedding , then you must have heard of Campidoglio or the Capitoline Hill being one impressive and romantic backdrop for nuptials.

The Piazza itself was designed by the magic hands of Michelangelo - it provides scenic views to the ancient city of Rome , is peaceful and quiet enough for an intimate conversation and is dotted with cafes and a museum. Step into the piazza and you would feel the ancientness of the city come alive - it's a romantic spot like none other.

Again, Rome is great in the day but magical at night - strolling through  Campidoglio at night can definitely up the romance in your soul and body.

6. Trevi Fountain

There's also a miniature fountain on the left side that has given birth to another lover's lure - couple that drink from it together will stay faithful forever .

Immortalized by icon Anita Ekberg , who famously waded into the fountain in the classic movie " La Dolce Vita " - the Trevi fountain is definitely a must visit when it comes to romance in Rome !

7. Gianicolo Hill

There are plenty cafes and canteens selling drinks and refreshments so you don't really need a picnic basket - though a pre-packed one with chocolates and champagnes would definitely add to a lover's euphoria.

If you are up for some exercise then do walk up the hill but taxis are available if you plan on expending your energies in something more intimate later! Lesser tourists, beautiful views, a lovely green cover and plenty of food choices make this an ideal romantic destination of Rome .

8. Lungotevere

Built for very practical purposes, the Lungoteveres were massive walls constructed to eliminate the recurrent flooding of the River Tiber in 1875.

Now Lungotevere is an alley or boulevard running alongside the river and hold great romantic appeal especially during twilight. Lean over the balustrade and gaze into the depths of Tiber as you feel your better half beside you or else just stroll along the boulevard hand-in-hand as you contemplate the magic of your relationship and that of Rome .

The views are great and it's easy to lose yourself into the ardor that only Rome has - as any Roman would tell you!

9. Ponte Sisto

So yes, Rome has many bridges. If Ponte Sant'Angelo's rather bloody past ruined the romance then try strolling across Ponte Sisto 's almost confectionary appeal - reminiscent of the arches on wedding cakes.

Made famous by its central eye or oculus in many movies and songs - the bridge spans Tiber in four giant arches. In fact most news channels were rife with Roman Catholics protesting against the impending use of 007 leaping from a helicopter onto the bridge and so Daniel Craig's latest Bond movie Spectre seems to have come to a Roman standstill.

Whether Ponte Sisto finally makes it to the movies or not will go down in the annals of Hollywood history, a stroll across it will definitely put you and your lover in a loving and romantic mood.

10. Hidden cafes and hotel rooftops

Not exactly one place or any particular spot - the magic of  Rome is apparent in every alley café or rooftop bar. The cafes are budget, the rooftop restaurants of most hotels are not - you would have to shell out a decent amount for drinks.

The views are magical , romance is apparent in the menu and the architecture lends itself to the intimate setting you want . You'll have to find your very own café or rooftop place - for different couples, its different.

However, if the show at Teatro dell’Opera is sold out or above your budget, then you can check out this intimate opera show at Waldesian Church or this one at St. Paul’s Within the Walls Church . They may not be in Rome’s Opera House but they’re still outstanding.

8. Have a Picnic at Villa Doria Pamphili

Villa Doria Pamphili is located just outside the city center and is surrounded by the largest maintained public park in Rome.

The park is so large so it never feels crowded making it one of the romantic places in Rome to go for a picnic.

It is so beautiful that you can simply wander around the well-manicured gardens while taking in the stunning 17th-century architecture and later find a spot to picnic.

The park is 184 hectares, with 94 hectares open to the public so regardless of how many people visit, you’ll always have a quiet area to yourselves.

The park also has other attractions that make it worth visiting including Lake Belvedere which is probably the highlight of any visit and an ideal spot to picnic, Casino del Bel Respiro which is the most beautiful building in the park, a number of fountains, and well-maintained gardens.

Pack a few goodies or even a bottle of champagne for an added romantic touch, then lay a blanket on the grass or use the benches and tables.

If you don’t feel like packing anything, you can ask the onsite cafe, Vivi Bistrot to prepare a picnic for two if you feel like spoiling yourselves.

Trastevere is a Bohemian neighborhood in Rome with narrow streets lined with Medieval buildings.

11. Throw A Coin In The The Trevi Fountain

If you are looking for something that is reasonably priced, this is one of the cheapest things to do in Rome for couples as currently, it costs just 3.50 euros for 20 minutes.

You can take it in turns to row so that you each get a chance to admire the scenery since the rate is per person not per boat.

The lake is surrounded by beautiful trees, and you can also admire the ancient temple of Asclepius , a replica temple dedicated to the god of medicine.

15. Watch a Movie at an Open-Air Movie Theater

What can be more romantic than sitting together under the stars while holding hands and watching a movie in the warm summer evening air? 

Rome is one of the best places to do this as piazzas and villas become open-air movie theaters when the hot weather arrives.

During June and the first half of July, a festival called Il Cinema in Piazza is held in some of Rome’s famous piazzas . The best thing is that it is free to watch the movies!

The Villa Borghese Gardens is one of the top Rome romantic places, and in July and August, it houses an open-air cinema. All the films are in their original language with Italian subtitles. 

If you want to see recently released international films, head to Monteverde and Il Cinema sotto le Stelle . They even have a food area so you can get snacks to share while enjoying the movie.

16. Take in The View of Rome From the Victor Emmanuel II Monument (Altar of The Fatherland)

Il Vittoriano is an enormous Neo-Classical building built to celebrate the unification of Italy in the 19th century.

It is 135 meters (443 feet) wide and 70 meters (230 feet) high, and from the top, you get a stunning 360-degree view of Rome.

This makes it one of the many romantic things in Rome as these views are best shared with someone you love.

To get to the top of Il Vittoriano, you ride up in a glass elevator where you’ll watch the beautiful scenery unfold.

From above, you’ll be able to see the Roman Forum, and the Colosseum and Vatican City in the distance.

However, if your budget is limited and don’t want to spend on this, you can still enjoy the views from the lower terrace of the Victor Emmanuel II Monument.

17. Admire The Beauty of The Vatican City

At first sight, visiting the Vatican City doesn’t seem to be one of the most romantic things to do in Rome but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

There are plenty of choices on offer including a tasting in a wine bar in the city, but if you want the experience to be even more special, then consider taking this half-day wine tour to Frascati in the countryside. It’s even perfect if you love Frascati wine!

Located about 40 minutes from Rome, you’ll be transported from your hotel to a 300-year-old winery where you’ll learn about the history of wine-making in Italy and the entire wine-making process.

19. Bike The Appian Way

If you want to get away from the bustle of the city or just want to do something adventurous with your loved one, biking the Appian Way is a great solution.

The Appian Way was the first ancient Roman road to be built, dating to 312 BC. It stretches for hundreds of miles to southern Italy and is lined with pagan tombs, Christian catacombs, and monuments.

20. Savor Delicious Gelato Together

Indulging in Gelato with your partner is one of the best couple things to do in Rome. Actually, even if you’re traveling solo or with family, having a gelato is more of a given.

This Italian ice cream is denser and creamier than the ice cream you are probably used to.

You will find gelaterias everywhere in the city, so how do you decide which one to choose?

I suggest Gelateria dell Palma which is near the Pantheon and has 150 different flavors. As well as traditional flavors like chocolate and vanilla, it offers unusual flavors such as basil, Kit-Kat, and zabaglione. It even makes vegan gelato too!

Gelateria Come il Latte is another good choice. It offers unusual flavors in addition to the traditional ones such as parmesan, brie, and sweetcorn.

All their gelato is produced in the building and is made with milk from grass-fed cows and fruit from local farms. And every day, around three vegan-friendly flavors are also made. 

I also love Venchi ice cream ! They have stores in almost all major cities in Italy, but every time I got one, I was never disappointed!

21. Take a Romantic Stroll Through the Botanical Garden of Rome

The Botanical Garden of Rome is large, covering an area of 12 hectares with 2,000 square meters (21,528 feet) of greenhouses.

For some reason, it is often left out of most tourists’ itineraries so it’s never that busy. This is perfect if you want to take a romantic stroll with your partner without having to fight through crowds of people.

The garden is beautiful and is just the place to stroll hand in hand with your love. The best way to see the park is to follow a circular path that will take you past hundreds of species of trees and plants.

A highlight is the Japanese Garden with its lovely cherry trees, magnolias, small waterfall, and ponds.

The Rose Garden is also beautiful in spring and the greenhouses are impressive, especially the Greenhouse of Orchids which houses hundreds of species of orchids.

Along the way, there are places with benches so you can have a well-earned rest or even a picnic.

It’s easy to spend an entire afternoon in the garden, especially if you have had a few hectic days of sightseeing! If you’re looking for something low-key, then this is definitely one of the most romantic things to do in Rome.

22. Take a Romantic Night Segway Tour of Rome at Night

23. Take an Evening Tour of The Colosseum

One of the most romantic activities in Rome is visiting the Colosseum at night .

It is a fascinating experience as you will be taken back to ancient Rome and the gladiatorial fights. These nighttime tours are limited so be sure to book in advance.

Giardino degli Aranci is the affectionate nickname for Savello Park up on the Aventine Hill. It’s a rather small public garden by Santa Sabina on the Aventine church. This is one of the lesser-known Rome tourist attractions.

There’s a Renaissance square designed by Michelangelo at the top of the Capitoline Hill (“Campidoglio” in Italian). It’s one of the best Rome sightseeing places and it is already beautiful in and of itself. It’s definitely worth the climb. 

Most visitors to Rome don’t realize that a n even more beautiful view awaits them just around the corner. If you’re looking for one of the adventurous things to do in Rome, you’ll try to find it.

From the top of the staircase, walk around the right side of the building that’s straight in front of you. That’s Rome’s city hall, which is built on top of the Tabularium. It’s where the official records of ancient Rome were kept — one of the unusual places to visit in Rome.

To the side of the Tabularium, you’ll find a lookout point with sweeping views over the ruins of the ancient Roman Forum . It’s especially romantic when viewed at dusk, just as the floodlights are starting to light up the ruins. This is one of the best Rome things to do at night.

If anyone asked me today to name the most romantic city in the world, I’d say Rome.

The first time I visited Rome was on a solo trip. I did have the best time but I realized how romantic this city is. It was then I decided to revisit Rome with my husband. So I went back to this city in just 2 months.

Don’t get me wrong, Rome is perfect for solo travelers but it is just beyond amazing if you visit with your partner.

What makes Rome so romantic? It has everything – riverside walks, historical bridges, magical sunsets, street musicians, perfect weather, a sweet smell of flowers in the air, mindblowing food, and a lovely historical setting that feels like a movie with sculptures and fountains.

Yes, Rome is undeniably one of the most romantic cities in the world. From its ancient ruins and beautiful parks to breathtaking views and candlelit dinners, this city offers countless opportunities for couples to experience romance like never before.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic day filled with history or simply a quiet escape with your loved one, here are 15 romantic things to do in Rome that will make your trip unforgettable.

1. Take a Vespa Tour Through the Heart of Rome

One of the most iconic ways to explore the city is by Vespa. Embark on a Vespa tour through the historic center and the Roman Forum, zipping past the Colosseum and other landmarks of Ancient Rome.

Feel the wind in your hair as you take in the stunning architecture and vibrant street life. It’s the perfect way to experience the romance of Rome, with fewer people around during the early morning or later evening hours.

I did a Vespa tour in Rome when I traveled solo and it was the most amazing thing that I did in the city. Mine was a tour where I sat behind the tour operator but when you’re in Rome and one of you knows how to ride a scooter then click here to rent a Vespa for 3 hours .

2. Romantic Picnic in Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is one of Rome’s most beautiful parks and the perfect place for a romantic picnic. Inside Villa Borghese is the Borghese Gallery

When I visited Rome with my husband, one of the first places that I booked for us to visit was the Borghese Gallery in Villa Borghese, which I missed the last time and it has limited spots.

Escape the hustle of the city center and enjoy quality time together amidst lush greenery. After your picnic, visit the Borghese Gallery to admire its collection of stunning artworks, then stroll around the park’s charming gardens, lakes, and fountains.

If you didn’t know, Borghese Gallery houses some amazing art prices. Unlike the Vatican Museums (and many other museums in Rome), Borghese Gallery doesn’t get crowded because they have a limited number of spots, therefore it is a perfect spot to visit with your partner.

3. Watch the Sunset from Pincio Terrace

I mentioned the Terrazza del Pincio or Pincio Terrace already in my Rome viewpoints post. It offers one of the most spectacular views in Rome, overlooking Piazza del Popolo and the rooftops of the city.

Head here for an unforgettable sunset that bathes the city in warm hues of gold and orange. With the dome of St. Peter’s in the distance, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a romantic atmosphere and take in the beauty of Rome.

My two visits to Terrazza del Pincio were both in the summer months but the experience was different. In June the terrace had a bit of space to stand and click photos.

But in the month of August, the entire terrace was full because there was a musical performance there. Even though it was full, the experience was truly fun. If you’re visiting this spot in August (peak travel season) and would like to click a photo of yourself at sunset time, then please forget about it because of the crowds.

4. Explore Vatican City at Night

For a truly magical experience, visit Vatican City at night when the crowds have thinned and the atmosphere becomes more intimate. This is what I did when I visited Rome with my husband.

It was my second time in Vatican City. The first time was when I took a private tour of the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums to avoid the long lines and enjoyed the awe-inspiring art.

But visiting the Vatican at night was a completely different experience because all the sculptures, fountains, and buildings were lit up. Seeing these iconic masterpieces in St. Peter’s Piazza made by Michelangelo, Bernini, and Maderno with my husband was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that left us both breathless.

Just so that you know, there are no night tours inside the Vatican Museum or St. Peter’s Basilica but the reason why I recommend you visit these places after dark is to enjoy the beauty and the romantic setting.

If you’d like to go inside, you can do that during the day. It isn’t romantic at all during the day as per me but is something that you can do if it is on your wishlist. I do talk about it more in my Rome itinerary post .

5. Breathtaking Views from Janiculum Hill

So, for every single day that you spend in Rome, I recommend you try to visit a new sunset viewpoint every day.

For another romantic lookout, head to Janiculum Hill, one of the highest hills of Rome. The panoramic views from here are breathtaking, especially at sunrise or sunset. You’ll have a spectacular view of the dome of St. Peter’s and the sprawling city below.

Located near Trastevere, Janiculum Hill is a bit more off the beaten path, so it offers a quieter, more peaceful experience. The viewing area is much larger than that of Pincio Terrace so you will easily find a spot to sit, even in peak months.

6. Stroll Through the Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci)

Yes, Rome has many amazing viewpoints and if I had to pick my favorite, then it is this one. There’s something about the orange trees, old structures, and magical views that charmed me.

Located on Aventine Hill, the Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci) is a tranquil spot for a romantic stroll.

This beautiful park offers a spectacular view of the city and is especially serene in the early morning or late afternoon. The garden is intimate and perfect for couples seeking a quiet escape.

Keep in mind that Orange Garden closes exactly a few minutes after the sunset, arrive here early so that you can spend enough time.

7. Make a Wish at Trevi Fountain

C’mon, how can we leave the most touristy and visited spot of Rome out of this post?

The Trevi Fountain, located in Piazza di Trevi, is one of Rome’s most famous landmarks. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the fountain ensures your return to Rome while tossing two coins can lead to romance.

Visit this iconic fountain early in the morning or late evening to avoid the crowds and share a special moment with your partner. Even if you visit this spot during peak hours, the experience is still like no other because of the stunning sculptures.

8. Romantic Dinner with a View

How can you go to Rome without having a romantic dinner with a view? Food and wine with views is where Italy never disappoints. That’s the specialty of not just this city but the entire country.

With Rome’s epic food scene, wine culture, and long dinners, every single meal can be a romantic experience.

If you’re a bit extra, then you can enjoy a romantic dinner with a view of one of Rome’s iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, the Vatican, and Castel Sant’Angelo. Here are a few top-rated restaurants in Rome that are recommended by Forbes :

9. Cross the Ponte Sisto Bridge at Sunset

The Ponte Sisto Bridge, a pedestrian bridge spanning the River Tiber, is one of the most romantic spots in Rome. This ancient bridge connects the historic center from Piazza Navona to the vibrant Trastevere district.

The best time to visit this Ponte Sisto is during the purple hour – so after sunset. That’s when the sky turns into shades of pink and purple, reflecting on the water below.

I also like the nighttime strolls here because you can see the pretty lights. Sometimes you will also see street musicians busking right on this bridge and people dancing all around them.

10. Experience Trastevere’s Nightlife

Trastevere is one of Rome’s most charming districts, known for its narrow streets, lively piazzas, and vibrant nightlife. It is my favorite neighborhood of Rome because it’s arty, hip, and historical, and has the best bars & restaurants.

In the evening, street performers fill the air with music, and cozy bars and restaurants spill out onto the streets. Trastevere’s Piazza Trilussa is perfect for a pub crawl and you can sit outside as you enjoy the unique atmosphere of this neighborhood.

Enjoy a romantic night out, sipping cocktails and dancing the night away in this bohemian neighborhood.

11. Visit the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna

The Spanish Steps are another must-see for couples visiting Rome. Take a romantic stroll up the steps to reach Piazza di Spagna, one of Rome’s most famous squares. From here, you’ll have a beautiful view of the surrounding area, perfect for people-watching or enjoying a quiet moment together.

Fontana della Barcaccia in Piazza di Spagna is beautiful and it depicts a sinking boat. This fountain was sculpted by the famous Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

12. Join a Cooking Class Together

What could be more romantic than cooking together? Sign up for a cooking class where you and your partner can learn how to make traditional Italian dishes, such as pasta or tiramisu. Afterward, enjoy the fruits of your labor with a candlelit dinner.

The above cooking class is conducted by chefs in the heart of Rome. You get to cook 3 different kinds of pasta with sauce, eat your pasta, enjoy a drink of Tuscan wine, and finish up with limoncello and dessert.

13. Day Trip to Tuscany

For a truly romantic day, take a day trip from Rome to the rolling hills of Tuscany. This is what we did while we were in Rome and we loved our little day trip on our rented car . We got lucky with our rental car because it cost us around EUR 100 for 5 nights.

We were first contemplating driving to the Amalfi Coast but after researching, we realized that it would be madness driving on the Amalfi Drive during peak summer months. Moreover, the parking situation on the Amalfi Coast is super stressful, so it wouldn’t have been a romantic day trip at all.

Instead, we drove to Tuscany and saw stunning landscapes. We went to Val d’Orcia, Saturnia, and Montepulciano. All these places are lovely and romantic.

Spend the day exploring the picturesque countryside, visiting wineries, and enjoying a romantic picnic with stunning vineyard views. Tuscany’s charm and tranquility make it the perfect destination for a couple’s escape. This region should be on every single Italy road trip itinerary .

In case you’d like to go to Amalfi instead, you can opt for a guided day tour from Rome instead of driving on your own there to avoid the stress.

14. Enjoy a Romantic Stroll Along the River Tiber

A walk along the River Tiber at night is one of the most romantic things you can do in Rome. The river’s reflection of the city lights creates a dreamy atmosphere, especially near Ponte Sant’Angelo and Castel Sant’Angelo.

The most romantic walk we did in Rome was when we parked near Castel Sant’Angelo and walked on Ponte Sant’Angelo (St. Angelo Bridge). The ancient bridge and castle are illuminated, making for a stunning backdrop for an evening stroll.

15. Romantic Photoshoot for Couples

You must have noticed that our photo next to the Trevi fountain looks better than most. That’s because a professional photographer saw us trying to click a selfie and he came forward and offered to click (for a fee).

Our photo at Trevi was clicked at peak time when this entire piazza was overflowing with people. I’d suggest you book a professional photoshoot in leaner times of the day and make your memories last a lifetime.

• Professional photoshoot with multiple location options – Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, Fontana della Barcaccia, and Trevi to name a few.
• Private Photoshoot at the Trevi Fountai n – Trevi is magical and somehow photos turn out amazing here.
• Early Morning Private Photoshoot at Iconic Landmarks – Multiple locations such as Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, or the Colosseum.

Guys, if you’re planning on proposing then Rome is the perfect place, and booking a professional photographer before time is the best way to seal the deal.

Stay at a Romantic Hotel in Rome

Complete your romantic trip by staying at one of Rome’s many romantic hotels. We had booked a place called Vacanze Romane in Rome’s Portuense. When I traveled solo, I stayed in Trastevere at Tra Gianicolo e Trastevere, Rome .

Both Portuense and Trastevere are next to each other and I believe these are nice neighborhoods to stay in for couples.

Here are some hotels with amazing terraces, romantic rooms, etc in Rome:

• Hotel Locarno near Spagna with a view of the historic center from the terrace.
• Hotel Palazzo Manfredi has a million-dollar view of the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
• Rome Cavalieri is on a hilltop in Montemario with views of Rome and the Vatican City.

From boutique hotels in the historic center to luxurious stays with views of the city’s landmarks, there’s no shortage of options. Choose a hotel with a rooftop terrace or a private balcony for an extra-special touch.

Rome truly is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. With its rich history, breathtaking views, and charming neighborhoods, there’s something here for every couple. Italian’s are known for their passion, and it’s hard not to get swept up in the romance and emotion of the country’s capital city when you visit with someone you love. There are countless opportunities for romantic Rome experiences across the city, whether you’re a couple who enjoy history and art, you’re looking for an indulgent break filled with wine and fine dining, or you are planning a  honeymoon .

1. MAKE A WISH AT THE TREVI FOUNTAIN

If you want to truly indulge in romance during your vacation in Rome, make sure that a visit to the magnificent Trevi fountain together is on your  to-do list . This beautiful water feature is one of the most-visited sites by tourists who come to Italy’s capital city, and is a particular favorite for couples.

You may have heard that tossing a coin into the fountain guarantees that you will return to Rome, which is certainly worth doing if you and your partner are enjoying your time in the city. But the tradition also states that throwing three coins into the fountain with a special someone is said to lead to marriage, which certainly won’t hurt your chances if you have long term romantic plans!

2. ENJOY A PERFORMANCE AT TEATRO DELL’OPERA

Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is one of the finest opera venues in Europe and the ultimate destination for a romantic night of culture. The building’s interior is lavishly decorated with gilding, velvet seats, an ornate chandelier and Renaissance frescoes, and it’s a brilliant excuse to get dressed up with your partner for a grand night out.

Operas, concerts and ballet performances are held in the Teatro dell’Opera, so if you’re a fan of either music or dance you’re sure to find tickets to something spectacular. As well as a range of classic shows, contemporary performances are also hosted in the theatre which has helped it gain a reputation as of one of Italy’s finest cultural venues. For an evening you’ll never forget, a visit to the Teatro dell’Opera is a must.

3. TAKE A PICNIC TO THE AVENTINE HILL

There are seven famous hills in Rome and some of the finest views can be found from the Aventine Hill, which is the southernmost hill in the city. This is one of the most romantic places in Rome because it offers peace and quiet away from the rest of the city, and is a perfect spot to take a picnic with your partner. 

If you’re visiting the Aventine Hill then the best romantic spot is the Giardino Degli Aranci (Orange Garden) where you can bag a sunny spot on the grass or find a bench on the terrace that overlooks Rome. With the sweet scent of citrus in the air and incredible views of the city, bring a basket of food and a bottle of wine and either enjoy a lazy afternoon or come and watch the sunset together.

4. VISIT THE VILLA BORGHESE GARDENS

Another green space in the city that is a top romantic location is the Villa Borghese Gardens, which is also the third-largest public park in Rome. If you need a break from the noise of the city then there are over 80 hectares of land to stroll through hand in hand, enjoying the flowers, lakes and sculptures dotted around the area.

If a romantic walk isn’t really your speed, couples can also hire bikes or even roller skates to explore the paths that wind through the gardens. After you’ve admired the greenery and stopped to soak up the sunshine on the grass, you can also visit the Borghese Gallery and Museum for a bit of culture or wander to the nearby Pincio Terrace for a fantastic panoramic view of Rome.

The Vespa motorbike was made famous by its inclusion in the classic film ‘Roman Holiday’ starring Aubrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, and has been associated with romance in the city ever since.

Forget organized sightseeing; riding a Vespa together will allow you to explore Rome at your leisure and feel incredibly stylish whilst doing so, as well as providing some unforgettable photo opportunities!

6. ESCAPE TO TRASTEVERE

When you’re on a  romantic vacation  there’s nothing like visiting a city’s classic sightseeing spots, but if you’re looking for a bit of adventure then why not venture off the beaten track and visit the  Trastevere neighborhood . Found right beside the River Tiber, this area of the city has a brilliant bohemian vibe that feels a lot more authentic than other parts of Rome, and is a great place to spend an afternoon or an evening. 

Amongst the historic building and narrow alleys, you’ll stumble across countless little cafes, restaurants and piazzas that make Trastevere a brilliant place to sit and people watch together. In the evening the neighborhood comes alive with music and you can enjoy some of the best nightlife in the city alongside the locals, then enjoy an early morning walk back to your hotel along the cobbled streets.

Admiring spectacular views is one of the top  romantic things to do in Italy , and Rome has a skyline that is perfect for this no matter what time of day it is. 8. CRUISE DOWN THE TIBER

Italy is famous for its food, with pizza, pasta and gelato at the top of the list of the finest cuisine that the country has to offer. Whilst ice cream isn’t known as an aphrodisiac, the incredible dessert that can be found in numerous gelaterias across Rome is certainly an indulgence, and sharing a cone or two as you wander the city streets can be a very romantic experience.

One of the best places for gelato in Rome is Giolitti’s, which is the city’s oldest gelateria and home to a huge array of delicious flavors. You can’t visit the capital of Italy without sampling this ice-cold sweet treat at least one, and what better way to experience it than with the one you love?

Boy do Italians love love! With its grand monuments, beautiful fountains, resplendent piazzas and cobblestoned streets, Rome is undoubtedly one of the words most romantic cities.

For a romantic stroll, head to the historical center or even Trastevere at night. The monuments all lit up are breathtakingly beautiful and the city just basks in this magical glow. Here, the Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain and it's legend of making wishes come true are just the place to steal a kiss under the moonlight. 

The Tiber river is another favorite for lovers with many bridges a great vantage point to view the dome of St Peters Basilica. Why not take a walk north of the city to Ponte Milvio , Rome’s famous ‘Love Locks’ bridge where couples attach locks here as a token of their love and throw the key into the Tevere to reinforce it. Campo dei Fiori and the Jewish Ghetto

Ironically, the "Field of Flowers" (as the name translates) is the location where Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake in the 1600s for suggesting that the earth revolved around the sun and where Caravaggio is supposed to have murdered an opponent for winning a game of tennis. Today, visitors don't have to be on guard to visit the Renaissance homes, caf�s and specialty stores here. In Rome, nothing is more romantic than the 'passeggiata' - a leisurely stroll. And Trastevere is just the neighborhood for it. This quarter prides itself on its authenticity and devotion to Roman culture. Narrow streets lead to quaint homes that display gardens on roofs and spacious piazzas. The original inhabitants of this area across the Tiber have their own version of the Roman dialect and their own defining cuisine. This is the place to experience true Roman dining. Piazza Navona

You can't get anymore Baroque beautiful than Piazza Navona. This piazza has it all: three glorious fountains, Bernini sculptures, a lovely outdoor caf? scene and the magnificent Sant'Agnese in Agone church. In the first century A.D., this piazza was built over the Stadium where Emperor Domitian hosted chariot races and other contests. The most prominent of the fountains in the piazza is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. Bernini created the fountain for Pope Innocent X in 1651. The fountain represents the four rivers and four corners of the world: the Nile; the Plata, the Danube and the Ganges. BUS 40, 64, 492, 30.

This famous boulevard hails from the 19th century, but it was the 1960s that saw the area enjoy its cultural zenith during the \"Dolce Vita\" period. Featured in numerous films and frequented by the famous, the Via Veneto still has some alluring boutiques, turn-of-the-century lodging, and outdoor caf�s, but is frequented mainly by anonymous tourists and business people now. With it's grand buildings and trees dotted throughout, it makes for a lovely romantic stroll at any time of day. The world famous Harry's Bar is located on the strip and is open daily for dining or a drink. METRO: Barberini.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : Via Veneto remains one of the most visited streets in all of Rome and is lovely for a romantic stroll day or night.

Teatro dell'Opera di Roma

Over the course of several renovations and name changes, Rome's premier opera house is known today as Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, a 1,600-seat venue. Renamed in 1946, the opera house underwent renovations a short time later that remain to this day. Some of the upgrades included air-conditioning, floor replacement and a newly designed facade. Known for its fantastic acoustics, the opera house (originally opened in 1880) can still compete with any other venue in the world in terms of sound quality. Each season features a wide variety of ballet, dance and theater showcasing local and international performers. METRO: Repubblica, Cavour.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : The opulence of Rome's Opera House makes for a classy and romantic night out.

Castel Sant'Angelo National Museum

With its dominant presence looming over the Tiber River, it's hard not to marvel at the immense landmark, Castel Sant'Angelo. The castle was originally built to serve as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian but in the 6th century, was turned into a papal fortress. Thanks to secret passage ways (as featured in the blockbuster hit Angels and Demons), popes were able to escape from danger to various palaces within the Vatican. Today, the castle has a museum where visitors can keep themselves entertained by the trap doors, ditches, draw bridges, dungeons, weapons and papal apartments. The castle also has a lovely terrace offering spectacular views of the Roman city skyline. BUS: 80, 87, 280, 492. METRO: Lepanto

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : There is nothing more beautiful than a twilight stroll along the Ponte Sant'Angelo - Rome's Bridge of Angels.

Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps were completed in 1726 and ever since, people have looked upon this massive staircase with wonder and awe. The three flights and landings represent the Trinity, and you almost feel as though you could be climbing toward Heaven's Gates as you ascend. Once at the very top, you have a breathtaking view of the eternal city, with historic buildings surrounding you and a sea of people bustling below. The Steps are a popular meeting place for young Romans and tourists, and you are likely to see artists at work around the area. BUS: 117, 119 or 590. METRO: Spagna

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : The Spanish Steps is the biggest staircase in all of Europe and a great choice for lovers wanting to recreate their own Roman Holiday.

Maria's expert tip : Walk in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday but don't sit - it's now prohibited.

Villa Borghese Park

Dubbed the 'Central Park' of Rome, Villa Borghese is a favorite for tourists and the locals. The resurrection of the park was commissioned during the 17th century and used by the Borghese and Bonaparte families. Though, it's not the largest park in Rome it is the most popular thanks to its central location and its beautiful scenery. Villa Borghese is also famous for its historical buildings and world-class museums such as the Galleria Borghese, a children's cinema, and a place where you can rent bikes. It's a great place for a run, walk or romantic picnic. BUS 495, 490, 88. METRO: Flaminio.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : Villa Borghese is just the place for a romantic stroll or a picnic lunch.

Maria's expert tip : Once you reach Villa Borghese, head to the Pincio gardens for a breathtaking view of the city skyline and Piazza del Popolo from the terrace.

Janiculum Walk

This area is not easily accessed by public transportation, but the walk up to the top on Via Giacinto Carini is well worth it. You are surrounded by lovely views of the Alban Hills. Make sure that you go to Villa Lante before you leave the area, where you can get the best view of the city. The 'Fontana dell'Acqua Paola' is one of Rome's prettiest and biggest and is the centerpiece of the area. A cannon fires from 'Gianicolo' at midday each day to mark this historic battle for Rome. BUS: 115 or 870 to the top or 44 and 75 to Via Giacinto Carini

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : The view of Rome from Janiculum Hill is breathtaking and is located only a short walk from the center.

Maria's expert tip : Visit the big fountain, colloquially referred to by Romans as 'er fontantone'. It's one of the most romantic in all of Rome.

Trevi Fountain

Thanks to Fellini's Dolce Vita, the Trevi Fountain has served as a picturesque backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters like Three Coins in a Fountain and Roman Holiday and a dream come true for young women looking for love. Legend has it, throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, will ensure you a return trip to the Eternal City. The fountain is a dramatic aquatic marvel for visitors thanks to its vast basin ensconced between three tiny streets (the "tre vie,") with cascades of water that appear to be streaming from the wall of Palazzo Poli. Believe it or not, the Trevi Fountain is quite the money maker. Authorities say it rakes in some �600,000 a year, all of which is donated to charity. The fountain was completely restored recently and opened in 2016 thanks to a major Fendi funded project.

Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because : Always a crowd favorite, but the Trevi Fountain remains one of the most romantic spots in Rome.

Maria's expert tip : Make sure you know how to toss the coin in the right way. Toss the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder and your back to the fountain. Express a wish with your first coin and throw the second to ensure your return to Rome.

Cars work out their shocks on the cobblestones, the mopeds buzz by without peace, sellers sell, the Centurions flatter to get pictures.

You will not hear anything of this chaotic mosaic.

Embrace each other in silence, lost in the landscape of the Roman Forum .

Let yourselves go.

It will not be an ordinary kiss, just like any other.

The Fountain of the Four Rivers in  Piazza Navona , the Triton Fountain in Piazza Barberini, the splendid statue of Apollo and Daphne in the  Galleria Borghese , the cleverly designed  St. Peter's Square  that embraces the numerous visitors and pilgrims.

In the square there is a stone connected to a sad love story "

"When Bernini worked on St. Peter's Square , he was very in love with a Roman lady.

He could only think about the color of her eyes, her silky hair, the sound of her voice.

Unfortunately, despite Bernini’s dreams, his love was unanswered. Moreover, Bernini had to focus all his time and energy on the major papal project; there was no time for love.

Bernini hid as a sort of antidote to his broken heart into the pavement of St. Peter's Square.

Filled with fountains, ancient ruins, and charming squares, the historic center of Rome is already pretty romantic to see during the day. However, exploring it at night makes for an even more special experience. While crowds of tourists typically swarm this area during the day, the atmosphere is a lot quieter at night, making it the perfect time to go for a romantic stroll or to try some fun activities together! 

Take a relaxing stroll to the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps to see them lit up in all their glory at night. Other places not to miss on your romantic evening walk include the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, where you can watch talented street artists paint gorgeous pictures of Rome.

There are also plenty of fun evening tours of Rome you can take together, such as cheese & wine tasting tours, e-bike tours, and nighttime photography walks. Enjoy the Romantic View From St. Peter’s Dome

No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Vatican, the smallest country in the world. From the historic center, you can easily take a romantic stroll to the famous St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and get there in around half an hour to an hour. While both the interior and the exterior facade of the Basilica are simply remarkable, definitely don’t forget to climb up to the Dome of the Basilica during your visit. 

You can either climb up the 551 steps by foot or use a lift for the first half and climb up 320 steps afterwards. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the stunningly romantic panoramic view of Rome together! For an extra special experience, get there right in time for sunset. 

Have an Artsy Date at the Vatican Museums 

Once cannot explore the Vatican without seeing the incredible art and culture inside the Vatican Museums, and it’s very easy to turn this visit into a romantic artsy date for you and your significant other! Stroll past the beautiful Raphael Rooms, Gallery of Maps, and Gallery of the Chandeliers together, admiring the stunning frescoes and paintings hand-in-hand. It will take you back in time for sure! 

The main attraction inside the Vatican Museums is without a doubt the world-famous Sistine Chapel, which deserves all the hype that surrounds it. Italian artist Michelangelo spent four whole years working on this masterpiece, and it is simply jaw-dropping. Admiring the details and rich colors of the frescoes with your significant other will definitely make the experience even more memorable, especially if you’re a fan of art history. 

When visiting the Vatican Museums, be sure to purchase your ticket online in advance so that you won’t have to line up for hours at the ticket office!

Relax inside the Soothing Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is a large park right next to the historic center of Rome, and thanks to its massive area, it’s very easy to find sections of green space with very few people — if anyone — around. This makes it an amazing place to go for a romantic stroll together. The park is home to two lakes as well as an art gallery — the Galleria Borghese, which is totally worth checking out too. 

Many local couples hang out in this park, so it’s safe to say that love is in the air as you walk among the trees and greenery. You can find a spot on the grass to lie down and relax together, or, if you’re looking to do something more active, you can also rent a bike in one of the several bike rental spots inside the park. There are 2-people tandem bikes available for rent there as well, and it’s definitely a great way to explore the hidden gems of the park and the amazing views it has to offer. 

Catch Sunset at the Pincio Terrace

Before you leave Villa Borghese, be sure to stop by the incredibly romantic and scenic Pincio Terrace, one of the absolute best places to watch sunset in Rome. From there, you can get a spectacular view of Piazza del Popolo and the rooftops of the historic center, including the St. Peter’s Basilica Dome! The atmosphere at this terrace is absolutely magical; accompanying the gorgeous view are street musicians playing the most romantic and catchy tunes on the violin and guitar. Their beautiful soundtrack to match the views is definitely the cherry on top of the cake.

Have a Romantic Picnic on the Lungotevere

There’s a large river that runs through Rome, and it’s the Tiber River. The cool thing about it is that its riverbank (the Lungotevere) is an amazing place to go for a romantic walk or to have an awesome picnic with your loved one. You can pick a scenic spot along the banks to sit down, such as right in front of the dreamy Castel Sant’Angelo or a spot that will give you a view of the St. Peter’s Basilica.

Take a walk along the banks first to find your favorite spot, and grab a bottle of wine from a store to make the experience even more special! It’s likely you’ll also find other couples doing the same thing, as the Lungotevere definitely has its romantic charm. 

Get a Romantic Bird’s-Eye View of Rome From Gianicolo

One of the best hidden gems in Rome is the Janiculum Hill (Gianicolo). Situated about a 40-minute walk from the historic center (a worthwhile scenic walk), this hill offers an incredible 360 degree bird’s-eye view of Rome. It’s a complete panoramic view that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the city! 

The great thing about Gianicolo is that not many tourists know about this place. Among the locals though, it’s quite popular. In fact, the Gianicolo lookout is the romantic place for young local couples to hang out! As you can imagine, the view is definitely very dreamy, and it’s definitely a great idea to arrive just in time for sunset. Bring a bottle of wine to make the experience even more enjoyable!

Enjoy a Romantic Meal in Trastevere 

One cannot visit Rome without tasting the delicious local cuisine, and there’s no better place to indulge in a romantic meal together than in Trastevere, the #1 foodie neighborhood in Rome. While there are plenty of great restaurants in the historic center, there are also tons of tourist traps there and sometimes, it can be hard to distinguish between the two. Trastevere, on the other hand, is filled with authentic, locals-approved restaurants. It is also home to some of the most top-notch eateries in the city. 

Be sure to stop by Ego Bistrot for a romantic meal with a sunset view in Trastevere. This restaurant is located on a quiet rooftop terrace and offers an amazing view of the surrounding historic buildings and orange trees.
