Chau Doc-Phnom Penh Express Boat

One Journey Two Nations

Whether you’re arriving in Ho Chi Minh city via an international flight from abroad or a domestic flight from cities like Hanoi, Hai Phong, or Danang,… and you’re landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport with plans to explore Ho Chi Minh City and its environs in some days for HCM city tours, Cu Chi Tunnels-Cao Dai Temple a day tour, HCM city- Monkey Island a day tour, HCM city-Vung Tau Beach a day tour, for instance. And wish to extend your journey after that to Cambodia: Traveling by Express Boats (speedboat), there’s an exciting option available for you here.

Mekong River

The Mekong Delta , the rice bowl of Vietnam is known for its intricate waterways, lush landscapes, and vibrant local culture. Traveling from Vietnam to Cambodia through the Mekong Delta by waterways offers a picturesque and unique journey. Here’s a general guide on how to make this journey:

3-day Ho Chi Minh City- Mekong Delta (Can Tho-Chau Doc)-Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Please check the full itinerary: Mekong delta 3-day from HCMC here

Brief Intinerary :

Day 1: Saigon-My Tho (or Ben Tre/Cai Be) –Can Tho (Overnight in Can Tho, Capital city of Mekong Delta)

Day 2: Can Tho-Floating Market- Chau Doc (Tra Su Cajuput Forest- Fish Farm-Cham Village)

Day 3: Chau Doc-Speedboat to Phnom Penh, Capital of Cambodia

Chau Doc , a small town nestled within Vietnam’s An Giang Province and positioned approximately 230 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, boasts a scenic setting along the Mekong River, next to Sam mountain and adjacent to the Cambodian border. Notable landmarks in this include Sam Mountain, the Lady Temple, Tay An Pagoda, Tra Su Cajuput Forest, Floating Fish Farm, Cham Village, and several Muslim Mosques.

It’s a common starting/finishing point for speedboat trips from/to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

If you journey from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Vietnam by speedboat, you will arrive in Chau Doc first. Here, you can explore several prominent attractions as above mentioned, and spend a night before continuing your exploration to various provinces within the Mekong Delta. The journey then leads you to Ho Chi Minh City, a gateway to the broader expanse of Vietnam.

Chau Doc-Phnom Penh Express Boat operated by Hang Chau Tourist .

Please check its website: www.hangchautourist.vn for the full information.

Ticket for Express Boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh (Depart: 7:30, Arrive: 13:30): 840,000₫

You have the flexibility to select your preferred departure date.

Notice that departure time is 7:30AM and expected arrival time is 1:30PM (13:30) on the same day.

For comprehensive information regarding ticket particulars, the route, visa fees, and what to prepare, please refer to this article .

Crossing the Border: The speedboat journey will involve crossing the border between the two countries. The Vinh Xuong/Kaam Samnor Border Crossing connects An Giang Province in Vietnam with Kandal Province in Cambodia. Make sure you have all the necessary travel documents, such as a valid passport, visa for Cambodia (if required), and any other documentation that might be requested during the border crossing.

Mekong River Journey : The journey along the Mekong River can take several hours (5-6 hours) , depending on the route and conditions. The speedboat will pass through scenic landscapes along the way.

Arrival in Phnom Penh: The speedboat should arrive at the Sisowath Quay area in Phnom Penh. This is a popular tourist area with various accommodations, restaurants, and attractions nearby.

* Note : The Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh is conveniently within a walking distance to Watt Phnom, one of the key attractions in the capital. On a previous occasion, I had booked an express boat trip from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc. Upon arriving at the Boat Station ahead of schedule, I securely stored my heavy luggage at its ticket office, then take a leisurely stroll to explore Watt Phnom for a while before the boat’s departure.

After completing all formalities, you can continue your journey to your destinations in Cambodia, such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other cities.

The estuaries of the Mekong Delta are symbolic of the region’s identity, but opportunities for purposeful travel along them are rare for foreign visitors. However, Hàng Châu offers an express boat service from Châu Đốc, in Vietnam’s Mekong region, across the international border to Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital. The voyage provides a leisurely first-hand travel experience along the waterways of the Mekong and a comfortable, relatively stress-free way to cross the border between Vietnam and Cambodia. The journey is a good chance to make new acquaintances with fellow passengers, learn about the region from the boat’s staff, and sip a couple of cold beverages while passing the area’s quintessential agricultural scenes.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

ROUTE MAP :

Châu Đốc→Phnom Penh by Boat

[ Back to Contents ]

About this Ferry :

The speedboat between Châu Đốc and Phnom Penh is operated by Hàng Châu, which is a shortened name of Ngân Hàng Châu Đốc (Châu Đốc Bank), who are the original investors and current owners of the speedboat. In operation since 2003 , Hàng Châu boasts a fleet of 8 vessels, the largest having a capacity of 60 passengers. Most of the passengers are foreign tourists and the majority of seats are taken up by package tours.

The boat is certainly a novel way to travel between Vietnam and Cambodia. Compared to a bus, the boat is more comfortable, but it’s around 50% more expensive. However, relatively speaking, the boat is a more practical and smoother journey than the bus. A bus between the two countries only takes around 3 hours, compared to 6 hours on the boat. But, the land borders that the bus crosses are a lot more chaotic and unpredictable than the river borders that the boat crosses. We found our border crossing on the boat to be well-organised and very smooth: this is not the case with the land borders, in my experience. In addition, the departure and arrival times for the boat are far more reliable than the bus.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Times , Prices & Tickets :

The voyage takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes (including the border crossing). The ticket price for one adult is 850,000vnđ . The price is fixed and does not change on weekends or public holidays. The price includes drinking water onboard the boat and a small paper bag of snacks. The boat runs once a day in both directions: departing Châu Đốc in Vietnam at 7:30am and reaching Phnom Penh in Cambodia at 1.00pm, then departing Phnom Penh for the return voyage at 1.30pm . Two stops are made on the journey for border and visa purposes: one for exit and the other for entry.

Hàng Châu’s large fleet means that when demand for seats is high, they can use another boat to accommodate the extra number of passengers. Booking in advance is highly advisable, but generally doesn’t need to be done more than a day or two before departure.

Tickets can be booked through the boat company’s website: www.hangchautourist.vn . Alternatively, you can email the company: [email protected] , or call them: (+84) 2963 562 771, or they are also available on WhatsApp: (+84) 903 956 694.

* Note: motorbikes are not allowed on the ferry.

Sailing Schedule :

Ticket Prices :

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Border Stops & Checks :

Because the boat crosses an international border, passengers must stop and disembark on both sides of the border for passport and visa checks. However, the border process is easy and quick because the boat staff collect all the necessary visa costs and paperwork from passengers at the beginning of the journey.

At the Vietnam border ( map ), boat staff submit your passports and documents to border security while passengers wait in a cafe with a balcony over the river. There are toilets, a drinks vendor and a snack shop. Prices for food and drink are slightly inflated, but not astronomical. There is also a money changer who will change Vietnamese đồng, Cambodian riel and US dollars, but the exchange rate is quite high.

The process at the Cambodia border ( map ) is equally smooth. The border control is situated in a garden where lots of tropical trees and plants grow. It makes for a nice stopping point, although it may not be ideal if it’s raining. There are public toilets at the border, but there isn’t anywhere to buy food or drink.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Departure & Arrival Ports :

In Phnom Penh, the boat pier is right at the heart of the city, walking distance from many of the most famous sights; in Châu Đốc, the boat pier is not far from the town centre and the bustling central market. Both ferry ports are close to food and drink outlets with seating overlooking the river:

The Châu Đốc boat pier ( map ) is located on the premises of The Victoria Hotel . On arriving, walk through the hotel’s reception and take a left at the swimming pool; from here you will see a jetty out onto the river where several Hàng Châu boats are docked. The Victoria Hotel is very accommodating to passengers, serving them drinks and food. Outside the hotel, street vendors sell some great local breakfast dishes and Châu Đốc’s excellent market is just a little further along the riverbank. ( Getting to Châu Đốc is easiest by bus (5 hours) which leave regularly from Ho Chi Minh City’s Miền Tây bus station: check times, prices and book tickets on Baolau.com )

The Phnom Penh boat pier ( map ) is in the northern part of Khan Doun Penh, the tourist district of the Cambodian capital. The terminal is part of a quirky, mid-range, riverside restaurant named and decorated after the Titanic. As soon as you leave the vicinity of the Titanic, you are greeted by a slew of popular tourist restaurants and bars. The French Colonial post office is a short walk north; just south along the river is the Night Market ; west is the Central Market ; and further south are the National Museum of Cambodia and the Royal Palace . All of these are walking distance from the boat pier.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

The Boats :

The boats in HĂ ng Châu’s fleet are small fast ferries with four rows of coach-style seating on soft chairs. Each boat has a capacity of up to 60 people . The driver sits at the front of the main cabin and passenger seating runs down to the stern of the boat where there’s a flush toilet. There’s a covered deck near the rear with two cushioned benches facing inwards capable of seating 12 passengers, but if it rains, you’ll get wet.

Strangely, the boats do not have any electric fans or air-conditioning: ventilation comes from the air-flow through the windows and doors into the cabin. When it rains, or when there’s increased splash from the river, doors and windows shut and the cabin quickly becomes stuffy and a little uncomfortable.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

The Voyage :

I have wanted to take the boat from Châu Đốc to Phnom Penh for a long time. There are no railway lines between Vietnam and Cambodia, so the only other options for public transport are plane and bus. I think varying your modes of transport when travelling is essential to getting to know a country, and there aren’t many opportunities to take practical long-distance boat trips in Vietnam, especially on the Mekong River.

I often think about bodies of water as being the heart and soul of a location, especially in southwest Vietnam, where the World’s 12 th longest river is fundamental to life in the region. The multiple waterways of the Mekong Delta sustain Vietnam’s most crop-yielding region, also creating mini-archipelagos of lush green islets. The river’s importance has been eulogised in the arts and its ecological vulnerability is increasingly the focus of discussion and debate, by both politicians and environmentalists.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Setting off from Châu Đốc in the morning, sleepy passengers stumble onto the boat. I feel like the most excited person onboard. It becomes clear that most passengers are part of package tours which have swept them from Hanoi to Saigon in a matter of days: for them, the boat trip is more of an obstacle to their next destination than an experience to enjoy. Despite catering mostly to tourists, the Hàng Châu service does little to introduce the cultural significance of the region to passengers – maybe this is something that it might consider offering in the future.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

We head up the Hậu River then northeast along the Xáng Canal, passing through villages that sit either side of the waterway: the Muslim houses and mosques of Châu Phong and the Hòa Hảo communities of An Giang. The boat’s captain, Mohammad, is a Cham person from this area and has worked the boats since the business started. He’s happy to talk about life in the province and his own experiences of living on the Mekong River and how it’s changing.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Once we exit the XĂĄng Canal, we turn westward on the Mekong’s largest branch and head towards the Vietnam-Cambodia border. River traffic isn’t as heavy as I had expected. There are various river-going vessels plying the waterway, but improvements in road infrastructure and the construction of bridges mean that water transport is declining.

The Mekong is a resource for sand used in construction, but its mining has led to catastrophic levels of land erosion. Sand barges are a common sight on the river: as construction projects struggle to source raw materials for their completion, illegal mining of the Mekong has been a way for people to find sand. An anti-corruption bust in September 2023 put a temporary halt to all mining on the Vietnamese side of the river.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

Eventually, we arrived at the Vietnam and Cambodia border posts. Having given our documents and payment to Mohammad before the voyage began, when we arrived at the border stops, we didn’t have to do anything but sit and wait for the administrative procedures to be completed.

Once we crossed into Cambodia, the boat’s Wi-Fi malfunctioned and passengers were left to find old-fashioned ways of keeping entertained without their phones or simply catch up on some sleep in the padded seats. A complimentary bag of fruit and snacks kept hunger at bay for the duration of the journey and cold drinks were also available to buy onboard, including a selection of Khmer and Vietnamese beers.

Chau Doc (Vietnam) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) by boat

After a couple of hours on the boat, the Mekong isn’t so exciting. The river is very wide and while the passing traffic provides some distraction, there isn’t much to see on the banks. A few fishing villages and Theravada Buddhist pagodas populate the riverside, but some passengers may find the scenery quite monotonous. Bring a good book with you for the voyage.

As the trip reached its 5 th hour, the novelty of boat travel was wearing thin and there was a subtle atmosphere of agitation onboard and a desire to reach Phnom Penh quickly. The pastoral greens of agricultural Cambodia transformed into urban landmarks as skyscrapers poked up from the horizon and the cityscape of Phnom Penh grew closer. The voyage came to an end as the boat pulled in and docked next to the Titanic restaurant on the quayside: we were ready to eat!

phnom penh express travel

Hi Fabienne,

Yes, you can bring luggage on the boat.

Great article, but what does one do about the online visa? One must enter the entry port (as well as the exit?). I have heard that changing the entry/exit port is problematic. Can you comment on this please? Sincerely, Tom

Back in March 2023, I entered Vietnam with an online visa at the Saigon Airport. I then biked from Saigon to Chau Doc. Had no issues departing Chau Doc to Phenom Penh a few weeks later on the speed boat from Victoria Hotel. Easy border crossing as described by Luke.

You must get a Cambodian visa online in order to travel there if you are a foreigner. You must indicate your entry port and that is the only port you can enter from as well as exiting. Does that mean if you take the boat to Phnom Penh you must return on the boat? There is only one port indicated on the online visa. Please I have been told that you must exit the same port you enter. Can this be verified? Sincerely, Tom

You can just apply for a visa on arrival, you don’t need to apply for an online visa in advance. Make sure you have the cash in advance. If you have any further queries, I suggest you contact the Hàng Châu boat company and ask them directly via the contact details in this article above. Cheers

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

Best options, other options, phnom penh to siem reap schedule, how to get from phnom penh to siem reap.

The inspiring Angkor complex is undoubtedly the main draw of Cambodia and Siem Reap is a gateway to all the architectural wonders of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and all other temples of the Khmer Empire. You can easily spend days exploring the outlying temples of Angkor, visiting a floating village on the Tonle Sap Lake, savouring flavoursome and rather mild – compared to the Thai ones! – Khmer dishes, watching apsara dancing or relaxing in street massage shops offering great Khmer massage. Even if Siem Reap has been for a long time overtaken by foreign tourists, it remains a great place with its own atmosphere, a busy and ever-friendly vibe, homely guesthouses and colourful Old Market. All in all, it is a great mistake to think that there is nothing else to see and to do in Siem Reap apart from admiring the great Khmer structures of Angkor. You will find plenty of activities and meet plenty of great people, both travellers and locals. And you are sure to enjoy the experience.

From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by bus

It is no exaggeration to say that Siem Reap is the main tourist destination in Cambodia, and as such it enjoys great transport connections with the main cities of the country and the capital. The choice of operator serving the route is wide, with buses leaving for Siem Reap throughout the day. A 320 km journey from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap may take anywhere between 5½ hours to seven hours, so try to leave Phnom Penh before or around noon to get to Siem Reap before late. Morning buses obviously steal the precious daytime of your journey, but otherwise are quite a convenient variant to get to your destination. They normally make pit stops during the way, and you have a lot of time to enjoy local pastorals blooming with lotus flowers and peppered with water buffalos grazing amidst bright green rice paddies.

Strange enough, but the choice of night buses is limited. If you opt for one leaving around midnight, you will get to Siem Reap by 6am or 7am, have the whole day ahead and save a couple of dollars on a hotel room – a welcome compensation for having spent the night on the move.

Currently, the only bus company in Cambodia which sells tickets online is Giant Ibis Transport . They have three morning buses at 7.45am, 8.45am and 12.30pm and from one to three night buses at 10.30pm, 11pm and 11.30pm daily.

It is not a common practice to rent out motorcycles or scooters to foreigners in Siem Reap, alas! If you want to have your own transport, the only option is bicycles which are offered at around USD2 per day. Be realistic, though: it is about 7 km from Siem Reap to the ruins plus the same distance back and than add no less than 10 km if you wish to do the Small Circuit. And yes, it may become scorching hot in Angkor.

If you prefer motor transport, than opt for a motorbike taxi, a tuk-tuk or a normal taxi. Motorbike taxis are the cheapest way to get around the city. Short hops around Siem Reap normally cost less than USD1. You can also hire a motorbike taxi for the whole day for exploring the temples of Angkor (daily rates start from USD8). It is a convenient option if you travel solo and do not want to depend on other travellers which is the case with a shared taxi or tuk-tuk.

Tuk-tuks are ubiquitous and are a convenient – and very authentic – way for moving around the city. Hiring a tuk-tuk for a whole day for exploring the ruins is a quintessential Angkor experience. They seat two people comfortably enough; three or four will feel like herrings in a bowl though. Tuk-tuks charge USD15 per day.

Taxis or rather cars with drivers are air-conditioned – no heat, no red dust, no sweat, hurray. They are definitely more comfortable and for some it may compensate the lack of that feeling of ‘authenticity’ of the ride. Yet if you wish to visit some remote temples and have fellow-travellers to share the expenses, taxis are a great way to get there. Expect to pay from USD25 to USD30 for a whole day.

Exploring, visiting, checking out and admiring all those awe-inspiring temples of Angkor from dawn till dusk – that is what you are supposed to do while in Siem Reap. Nobody of those arriving to Siem Reap escapes Angkor – well, no wonder.

But Siem Reap has even more activities on offer if you get tired of all those centuries-old carved stones. Enrol to ceramic classes and create your own pottery using the pottery wheel at The Angkor Pottery Centre or find out the variety of flavours of Khmer cuisine at cooking classes which include a visit to a local family with Beyond Unique Cooking Class. There are also opportunities for connoisseurs of alcoholic beverages with Georges Rum Free Tasting or Palm Wine tasting . In about 20 minutes drive from the centre there is The Angkor Silk Farm where the visitors are introduced to the whole process of silk-making . If you are still temple-hungry after visiting Angkor, there is a dozen of old and modern temples in the city , all of different architectural interest, including a 500-year-old Wat Preah Prom Rath, which shows the obvious Angkorian influence.

Evenings glitter with traditional costumes of the dancers performing at numerous venues round Siem Reap. And then there are all those massage shops to relieve your aching muscles after a strenuous day at the ruins. The Khmers claim that the famous Thai massage has originated from the Khmer one. Whether it is true or not, it is worth comparing anyway.

From Siem Reap to Thailand

A three-hour bus journey brings you to the border town of Poipet. Some buses still practice numerous stops during the trip at local souvenir shops and restaurants which pay them commission on every dollar you spend with them. But otherwise there are no other dangers or annoyances while getting to the border. No touts are meeting you at the Thai side offering their help with your Thai visa and the only disappointment is that the queues may be quite long. On the Thai side, walk to Rong Klua Market for buses heading to Bangkok and some other destinations throughout Thailand or catch a tuk-tuk to get to Aranyaprathet bus station which has a wider choice of destinations. Find more information on getting from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok here .

There is a direct international bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok , too. If you use this one, you will not need to change transport at the border, which is the case with two separate trips – from Siem Reap to Poipet and from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok – and with other ‘direct’ buses from Siem Reap to anywhere in Thailand.
