Is it true that camping in Triund is closed? If yes, then when it will resume?
this page looks really promising.
We are a group of 3 friends intending to trek triund on 25th Feb, 2019. But we have been getting mixed opinions about the trek, as our travel agent said that the trek will be closed and camping wont be possible, whereas other few have said we can trek and camp on the mentioned dates.
Please guide us, whether we can trek and camp on 25th Feb, 2019? If so, would we need a guide?
Will really appreciate the help.
Trekking on Feb month is completely dependent on the level of snow fall…if there is less or no snow on trails then, it is possible to hike and stay overnight…else we will have to wait till March end. As of guide…if there is mild snow on trails, then you need one guide. With snow on trails even an easy trails can become dangerous.
Hello admin, I am planning for the trek on 20th of may, I would like to know if trek can be complete in one day as its my frist trek or do you suggest an overnight stay . In case stay can you help me with food options and tent rental.
It is one of the easiest trail….even if you instruct a child just to follow the beaten trail and not take any shortcuts, he/she will reach the first campsite with ease. Plus there are many many tea stall all along the trek. All one need is to be careful and not pose for selfies or photographs on trail edges. You can start the trek as soon by 8 or 9 am from Gallu Devi Temple and reach after 3-4 hours of walk….stay there for an hour or so and return to Mcleod with ease. Plenty of day time in summer. If you want to stay then need to book tents in advance and we can help with that, incase you want to stay, but now a days we don’t recommend overnight stay, as the place is crowded and has no toilet room facility. If you love to camp over night, then we have some of the best and secluded trekking destinations outside Dharamsala area…all you need is to tag some friend with self, means at least two person for night camp and trek. For more information you can contact us at [email protected] We Wish you a Safe, Clean and Green Hike
Thanks for the detailed information
Thank you sir for stopping by and appreciating :), We wish you a safe, clean and green hike, where you go out in Nature.
Is it safe to trek during monsoon?
Good day, yes it is safe to trek in monsoon, just you have to be prepared for sudden rainfall. Triund is safe to trek even in Monsoon season and is safe for solo girls as well.
How far is the forest guest house at Triund from the Triund trail end.
Well there are three near the trail end and they are with in 100 meters of range towards north and one is towards south east but around 300 to 500 meters of distance.
Hello, you sure have good information and that too for free. Anyway, can we trek to Triund in January? What is the condition of Triund trek? Can we go without guide or do we need to hire a guide? Also if you provide Triund camping then what are the packages for the group of 7 and for the solo trekker! Actually, I am thinking of coming for Triund trek in January 2021 with my college friends and we all are students of Delhi University! Please reply with above mentioned queries…thank you!

Is it possible to complete the Triund trek in a day? Can we see Dharamshala Cricket Stadium from Triund? Actually we are planning our trek to triund in coming weekend of December 2023 and may be the Christmas, so do we need guide during that period and what about snow and weather all like that. Also can you suggest about stay as well. Will a home stay be good or some hotel?

Trekking has always been one of those activities that my non-pathetic alter ego has yearned for. But rarely does it get an opportunity to indulge in the same. The regular readers will be aware of the first-ever trek of any value or consequence done for this blog, the Valley of Flowers .
After more than two years, I was again back in the Himalayas and as I’d mentioned in the previous post, McLeod Ganj spoiled us with food . So, to overcome the socialist guilt of excessive consumption, I decided to undertake the Triund Trek the next day along with Su Ko who has always been a bigger sinner of gluttony.
We did have a bigger than usual breakfast at the hotel in McLeod Ganj but I think it was fair because we were going to have a tough time. We first moved from McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot by hiring an auto rickshaw. It is a smaller settlement barely a couple of KMs away and it is better to take some vehicle to this point to save time. At this point, the real trek starts and it is 7KMs from here to the peak of Triund, a distance I rarely walk at one go even on the plains.
The first few yards of the trek are not that difficult. The ambiance was not lush green like the monsoons but had a more demure green look with occasional reddish hues of the autumn. The moon was visible even in the broad daylight due to the clear and unpolluted sky. We occasionally came across other trekkers, small settlements and mini caravans of the locals with solitary donkeys.
One particular view was especially attracted my attention. It was a small plot of terrace cultivation that could be seen from a distance. There was also a steep trail leading towards it and there was also a small hut and I wondered how great it would be to live such a secluded existence. As we moved on, that particular plot kept becoming clearer and after a couple of tiring hours, I suddenly noticed that we’ve reached a higher spot than the plot in question.
The progress was slow and tedious. Years of lethargic urban lifestyle was showing its colours. The sun was warm but the shades were chilly and the lone water bottle was quickly getting empty. But with every turn the Dhauladhars became clearer with vibrant fall colours.
From Triund it is possible to move higher up to certain other locations and in fact it is one of the ancient routes connecting Kangra with Chamba. But the popular day trek for dummies is supposed to end here itself. We were tired, famished and sleepy. We asked one of the shopkeepers if we can get anything to eat, he offered us Maggi and Gatorade and we eagerly lapped up this triumph of globalization. We waited for an hour but the fog refused to go away and so the pseudo aerial shots that I fantasized about were never possible.
While coming down I suddenly saw a goat. After a few steps, I saw a couple more and finally I noticed an entire herd of mountain goats. I always knew that the goats are capable of good balancing acts. The first-ever circus I ever visited during my childhood had a goat walking on wire. But it was impressive seeing so many of them swarming the steep mountain and soon I realized that they were not alone. There was a shepherd guiding them but we only heard his voice. But we did see a shepherd dog keeping a close eye on them. I must confess that this was the most stately dog I have even seen in my life.
While coming back, we stopped for tea at the midpoint. There was a small house cum shop and also a small temple. There we found a lonely British guy who called himself Garry. Apparently, he has been coming to India for almost a couple of decades. He works for a few months, saves money and rushes to India. And he was planning to spend that night at that shack in the midst of nowhere. This is how the mountains seduce people! Anyways, the last leg of the trek was eventless and I just got a few photographs clicked with silly poses to be used as display pics in various social media profiles.
The Dharamshala sojourn ends basically with this trek. You can read the guide below for complete information on Triund Trek. On the other hand, if you need more information on Dharamshala including what to do and where to eat, read this guide on Dharamshala .
Where exactly is the triund trek located.
Triund is a popular day trek near McLeodganj (Dharamshala). However, serious trekkers can also go beyond Triund Top to Indrahar Pass and then cross over to Chamba District.
Triund is around 9 kms from McLeod Ganj. You can save time by hiring an auto rickshaw to Dharamkot and then trekking the final 7 kms.
Back in 2012-2013 when I visited this area for the first time, both food and tents were easily available at the top. However, in order to counter littering and other environmental issues, camping was banned at Triund Top !
So, as of now, as far as I understand, Triund camping is not possible and you need to start early in the morning and come back to Dharamkot or McLeodganj before it is dark to be safe.
I am not completely sure about it but as far as I know, you can go ahead of Triund and camp near Snowline . It is a point around 30 mins ahead of Triund, on the way to Indrahar Pass. In the good old days, there used to be one guy running a shack turned cafe turned camping site here. Not sure if he is still there!
Indrahar Pass is a 4300-meter high mountain pass connecting Kangra and Chamba districts. You will need multiple days for this and the route goes through Triund, SNoiwline, Laqa Got, and Lahesh Caves before finally reaching Indrahar Pass. People generally camp at SNowline and then the Cave. I once made a failed attempt to Indrahar . Hopefully, I will complete it someday.
The ascent should take 4-5 hours depending on your physical ability. The descent will be faster. In any case, you will have to spend one whole day. Start early in the morning and try to come back before it’s too dark to be on the safer side.
It is one of the easy to moderate treks you will find in the Himalayas. But if you are not a regular trekker, make sure that you’re physically fit enough. Also, carry warm cloths and water with you. Earlier, there used to be shacks offering food along the route and at the top too. After the camping ban, I am not fully sure about that.
It can be done throughout the year. Try the spring or early summer for the best colours. I did it once in November and once in October and they were comfortable too. But the extreme winter will be more challenging with low temperature and fog but people try it in Jan-Feb too in order to witness snow.
You generally can do it yourself as the trail is well-marked. But if you must take one just inquire the travel agents in McLeod Ganj .

Amazing post. Beautiful photos.
Thanks for dropping by Rupam
Lovely Images.
I have been to Mcleo and Dharamkot two time, this time I am planning to trek Triund in this may month and I am alone. Can you tell me from your experience would it be safe to trek Triund alone?
Thanks for dropping by… it should be fine even if you go alone if you are physically fit… it gets a bit hectic towards the last few yards… carry some water…
Very good post. I myself visited Triund and trekked further ahead to Ilaqa Snow line. It was an awesome experience. Your photos look terrific especially the clear sky. When I visited it was overcast and bit gloomy an absolute nightmare for photography. I liked your formatting especially the FAQs and will definitely imbibe it in my forthcoming travelogues including Triund with your kind permission 🙂 Of course I won’t copy the content and anyway I started from Naddi.
Hey! How about trekking at this time? Do you think monsoons will ruin t or what? Are there any arrangements to stay uphill?
I think it is fine… it is one of the easier treks… just get raincoats and shoes with good grip…
Ideally you can come back from Triund on the same day… but if you want to stay up there, I think there is a Forest guest house and some other private provisions too…

Triund Trek is open most of the year, except for January and February, when heavy snow sometimes closes the trail. The best times to trek to Triund are generally regarded as the summer months of April, May, and June, and the post-monsoon months of September and October. The weather is pleasant during these months, making them perfect for camping and hiking.
The monsoon season lasts from July to August, and hiking is not recommended during this period as the trail becomes slippery and dangerous. These months, however, offer the most gorgeous scenery, with lush green meadows and a variety of flowers and hues blooming.
The winter months of November through January are typically avoided because of the intense weather and significant snowfall. Trekking is quite risky and requires expert knowledge, appropriate gear, and guides during these winter months.
Nestled amidst the Dhauladhar Range, Triund is an alluring and easy to moderate trekking destination that even beginners may complete. The hike provides some of the most stunning views of the Rifle Horn, Moon Peak, Arthur's Seat, and the intimidating Dhauladhar range. The trek's gorgeous forest segment leaves an indelible impression on every visitor, making it popular among nature and adventure enthusiasts of all ages. The sunset beauty is undoubtedly the most memorable aspect of the trek, attracting trekkers to stay overnight. Triund also serves as a gateway to numerous other trekking attractions, including the snow line, the Lakha Cave, and the Indrahar Pass.
How difficult is the triund trek.
Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate
The Triund trek is one of the easiest in the Himalayas, and even inexperienced hikers may complete it if they start from the Gallu Devi shrine. The Triund trek distance is only approximately 11 kilometers long in total, with only a few challenging spots. The first 4 kilometers of the Triund trek are simple and require no particular skills. The Triund trek trail then becomes steep, requiring good climbing skills as well as physical stamina. The journey is known as the 22 curves trek because it contains 22 sharp turns along the way.
The presence of snow makes this generally easy and well-defined trail slightly more difficult during the winters. So, if you are a beginner, it is best to avoid winters. Wearing comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and trekking shoes are also important considerations while going on a trek. Additionally, you must avoid the alternative trek route of the Bhagsu waterfalls because it has higher and more treacherous sections. This Triund trek route is suitable only for professional trekkers. You have to be physically fit to face the challenges of the Triund trek. You must be physically capable of walking for roughly 6 km while carrying a backpack to enjoy the pleasures of the Triund trek.
Triund trek distance is about 11 km long and can easily be completed in 8 to 10 hours, making it easy to do in a single day. However, the best part of this trek is to witness the sunset, spend a night with Triund camping, and then take in the dawn the next day. Therefore, it is suggested that you set aside at least two days for the hike. It is a great weekend escape from Chandigarh and Delhi.
The Triund trek is an easy trek with only a few steep sections. It is one of the most popular trekking destinations in the Himalayas for novice to expert professionals. This hike can be easily completed by anyone, including those who are new to hiking.
Triund trek distance is around 11 km, with 5.45 km from Dharamkot to Triund and the same 5.45 km back to Triund if returning straight. The hike takes 4 to 5 hours uphill and around one hour less time downhill.
Triund trek is open all-year round offering stunning views of mountains and valleys. Although, the best time to go on a Triund trek is in the months of May and June before the rainy season and late September to November before it gets too chilly. Monsoon and cold winter months are not considered safe for trekking.
There is full network connection to Mcleodganj, and BSNL offers the greatest services in the area. However, there will be some disruptions in your cell connection along the trek. It is better to disconnect from technology while hiking to enjoy some peace, which is only possible if you turn off your phone.
Triund trek is amongst the popular trails drawing a lot of tourists. It is safe for both single female travelers and group trekkers due to the large number of trekkers present on the trail.
The Triund Trek is a short, easy hike that may be finished in a single day. Additionally, if you intend to camp, the trek can be easily finished in 2 days and a night. It is an excellent weekend getaway location because it is accessible and conveniently situated near Chandigarh and Delhi.
The Triund trek requires decent physical fitness despite having an easy to moderate difficulty level. The trek requires around 5.45 km high-altitude hike, thus trekkers must be in sufficient physical condition to enjoy the adventure.

What is there in McLeodgunj?
McLeodgunj is in hill station in Himachal Pradesh at 6,831 feet. It has beautiful mountain ranges and also has falls. Its an amazing place if there is no crowd but unfortunately it attracts a lot of tourists on weekend specially from Chandigarh . So plan a trip such that it does not coincide with any holiday else you can actually witness traffic jams in McLeodgunj.
A 9 km tedious trek from McLeodgunj leads to Triund ( its the place to be ). Triund is a plateau and has a beautiful view. There are two small shops and one government guest house on Triund. You can also trek further and go to glacial trek visiting Indrahaar pass. Trekking is moderate to easy, so even if you are fledgling in trekking, you can do it on your own.
Well, if your aim is to stay in McLeodgunj then you can go anytime, but if you are planning to go to Triund then you should plan to travel during June-July or Oct- Nov. We had went to Triund trek in July ( though a lot of people are hesitant as it rains a lot) , but luckily it didn’t rain the day we trekked. If its raining then do skip the plan as it can be dangerous. July was very hot so we were almost roasted by the time we reached, but the weather on the top was amazing.
How to reach McLeodgunj/ Triund?
From Delhi there are many volvo buses available that goes to Dharamshala and then Mcleodgunj that take around 10hrs to reach Mcleodgunj. From McLeodgunj buses leave during afternoon/evening to reach Delhi early morning.
Triund trek takes about 4 hrs(one way), depending on your speed ( its a hilly terrain).
Where to stay in McLeodgunj/ Triund?
If you want to do a day trek and come back to base again then I would recommend that you take hotel in Bhagsunath near McLeodgunj as it will be less crowded. They vary in their prices from 400 Rs to 4000 Rs. If you are going during weekend and its the tourist season then try and get a room booked in advance as this place gets overcrowded.
If you want to camp in Triund then there is only one government guest house in Triund which can be booked from Dharamsala ( place before McLeodgunj) and there are several private camping people which can be reached in Mcleodgunj. You can also ask for the govt. rest house when you reach, if rooms are vacant they will allow you(but don’t take the chance). Its an amazing experience to spend so if possible then try to stay a night at Triund.
What places to visit in McLeodgunj/ Triund?
The whole USP of the trip is Triund, so if you are going for this trek only then you have covered everything but still there are few places which you can visit.
Dal Lake : The route to Dal from the forest is very nice. It is better to ask the directions before venturing into the forest. Lake is small but its serene.
Bhagsunath Falls : It is a km walk from McLeodgunj, it was raining when we reached the falls so it was amazing to stay there and eat maggi in a small shop.
Dharamkot : Its full of restaurants, unlike McLeodgunj it has more foreigners and more foreigners owned restaurants.
Glacier : Above Triund ( a trek) there is Glacier, though we didn’t get the opportunity to visit it but its very beautiful and should be visited.
Can you trek to Triund with kids?
At Triund, a couple had come with their two kids, so its not impossible to trek with kids. There are people in McLeodgunj which carry kids in back baskets to the top.
Our experience of McLeodgunj/ Triund.
We has travelled to McLeodgunj in July, for three days, which we think were sufficient. Our main aim was to do the Triund trek, which took us about 4-5 hrs uphill and 3 hrs downhill. You need some food, water, sports shoes, sunscreen (sun can be very harsh) and camera and you are good to go.We hadn’t book the government guest house and also we were not prepared for camp, so we had to return the same day. Though we regret that we couldn’t spend a night there but the weather( it was drizzling) filled up for the thing that we missed. Though we took many pictures, but they can’t justify the beauty of Triund, it is a Shangri La in true terms.
The only thing which we didn’t like there was that it got very crowded on the weekend and that is when we decided to come back. We found Dharamkot to be so much quieter and calmer than McLeodgunj was. But still McLeodgunj is a must visit place and Triund a must do trek.
It has beautiful mountain ranges and also has falls. Its an amazing place if there is no crowd but unfortunately it attracts a lot of tourists on weekend specially from Chandigarh. So plan a trip such that it does not coincide with any holiday else you can actually witness traffic jams in McLeodgunj.

If you are a beginner, then find an expert guide or an experienced person. It will help you in safely completing. Only an expert guide can explain the latest guidelines issued by the government. For example, the government banned night camping at hill to maintain eco-balance. So the only option left is guest houses under the forest department.
Before planning for this trek, start working on your strength and eat healthy food. Check whether your body is flexible enough to accept the changes. Develop an environment of trekking at your home and practice daily. It will work as a prevention from possible injury.
Comfort comes first when it comes to trekking to hill. Wearing comfortable shoes helps in completing the trek easily. Change your shoes immediately if you feel any discomfort that can not be avoidable. Avoid shoes that can cause blisters.
Commonly, we forget to keep our favorite pair of shocks while backpacking. You are committing a mistake if you think comfortable shoes are enough to complete. So once you finalize the trekking shoe, pair up the right shocks with them. Check the material like fabric and necessary properties such as sweatproof and waterproof etc.
It is obvious that for an exciting trek, willpower and leg strength play a major role. Add bench press, squats, and other strength-building exercises to your daily schedule. Apart from leg strength, start working on willpower. Once you develop these elements, the Trek will become an exaggerating experience for you.
Every doctor suggests that walking is beneficial for our health. It keeps us physically fit and prepares us to map paths on the trek. Once you are a pro at walking, start practicing walking harder for trek. Develop an environment like Trek and become an excellent trekker.
If you think walking, exercising, and determination are enough, then let me tell you it is not. You will not get a complete idea of how trekking feels like. Whenever you practice walking, carry a backpack filled with the necessary trek items. Check how much weight you can lift comfortably.
Also, choose a backpack whose straps you can easily adjust while walking. After training, you will get used to carrying a backpack.
The use of lightweight walking poles while walking reduces pressure on your legs and thighs. It works as an additional leg that distributes the weight of the entire body. Apart from this, it has multiple uses, For example, keeping aside the vegetation and many others.
Water is the basic need of the human body. We have always been taught by our elders that keep water with ourselves. Trek drains all your energy and demands the correct fluid level in the body. Climbing up the hill results in increased breath, loss of fluid, and increased heartbeat. So, drinking the right amount of fluid helps in balancing all of the above results. Due to lifestyle changes, we forget to take enough water throughout the day. So keep your body hydrated by sipping a small amount of water at different time intervals throughout the day.
Your eating habits determine how long you will go. Your body demands more food when it comes to trekking up the hill. Practice eating a small and healthy meal at different points of the day. The best options to take on the trek are fruits that help in increasing your energy level. Avoid eating fried snacks and other unhealthy food items.
Fitness is the key to win against challenges that we encounter throughout the trek. You have to invest your valuable time and energy to reach the trekking point, and fitness makes it easier for you. Fitness allows you to squeeze out every drop of happiness and joy. All the above tips will help you in getting a lifetime trekking experience.

So the limited food shops you will get there sell at a higher cost. It is better to carry your food, energy-boosting fruits, and water to avoid dehydration. The trail is well-marked and frequented by trekkers throughout the year, providing adequate company and assistance if needed. Many female travelers have successfully completed the trek without any hassle.
However, it's always crucial to know your surroundings and be cautious when traveling alone or in a group. It's advisable to travel with trusted companions or join organized groups led by experienced guides.
Additionally, carrying basic self-defense tools like pepper spray can also add an extra layer of security during the journey. Being mindful of local customs and dressing appropriately will help avoid unwanted attention.

One of the common questions that many travelers ask before boarding on a trekking adventure is whether there are toilet facilities available along the way. When it comes to Triund Trek, this question often pops up as well. So, let's dive into the answer.
Firstly, it's important to note that Triund Trek is a moderately difficult trek and requires around 6-7 hours of uphill walking. Along the trail, you will come across several temporary stalls selling refreshments such as water and snacks but there aren't any permanent structures with toilets.
However, at Magic View Cafe - which is located at around 2/3rd distance from McLeodGanj - they have built some basic restrooms for their customers. It's also possible to use these restrooms even if you're not dining at the cafe by paying a small fee.
But once you cross Magic View Cafe towards Triund Hill Top or further down towards Laka Got Glacier or Indrahar Pass Base Camps, there won't be any toilet facilities available. Therefore, it's advisable to carry your own tissue papers/wipes and maintain hygiene by disposing them carefully in garbage bins only when you reach back civilization.
While toilet facilities may be limited during your trip on Triund Trek – being prepared can ensure that it doesn't become an issue during your journey!
Triund trek is a popular and scenic trek in Himachal Pradesh, India. It's a moderate level trek that requires some physical fitness and endurance. Before boarding on this adventure, there are a few things you need to know.
First of all, it's important to have the right gear for the trip. You'll need sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, warm clothes as temperatures can drop significantly at night and sunscreen lotion to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
Secondly, make sure you carry enough water and snacks to keep yourself hydrated and energized throughout the trip. There are several shops along the way where you can find basic supplies like water bottles, chocolates and biscuits.
Thirdly, it's advisable to start early in the morning so that you have enough time to reach Triund before sunset. The trail gets crowded during peak season, so starting early will also help avoid traffic jams on narrow paths.
Fourthly, be prepared for sudden weather changes as mountain weather can be unpredictable. Carry raincoats or ponchos if there's a chance of rain.
Lastly but most importantly - respect nature! Do not litter or harm wildlife in any way. Carry your trash with you until you find dustbins or designated waste disposal areas.
By keeping these things in mind before boarding on your Triund Trek adventure – it will ensure an unforgettable journey while respecting nature!
Triund trek is a popular destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers. It offers stunning views of the Dhauladhar range, making it an ideal spot for camping and trekking. There are two ways to reach Triund: one is from McLeod Ganj, which is shorter but steeper, while the other is from Bhagsu Nag, which takes longer but has a gradual ascent.
The first route starts in McLeod Ganj and goes through Dharamkot village. From there, you'll follow a steep trail that winds its way up to Triund. This route covers around 7 km and can be completed in about 4-5 hours by experienced trekkers.

Taking alcohol to Triund trek is strictly prohibited and is considered illegal. The reason behind this prohibition is that the trail passes through a wildlife sanctuary, which means that any kind of littering or disturbance can have a negative impact on the environment.
Moreover, consuming alcohol at high altitudes can lead to dehydration and altitude sickness. This can be dangerous as it may cause nausea, headaches, dizziness and even unconsciousness.
In addition to that, carrying heavy bottles of alcohol will add extra weight to your backpacks making it difficult for you to carry them throughout the trek. It's important to keep in mind that the focus should be on enjoying nature while keeping it clean and preserving its beauty rather than indulging in alcoholic beverages.
Therefore, we strongly advise our trekkers not to bring any kind of alcoholic drinks during their trip. Instead, they are encouraged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids such as tea or lemonade offered by locals along the way.
